Acts Of Acts
The Acts of the Apostles
By: Michael Yarmoshik
The book of Acts was written by the physician Luke. Luke was a traveling missionary with Paul. In
result, the book of Acts is written mostly about Peter and Paul and how the Christian faith spread to
the whole world. Peter, who is known as Simon Peter or Cephas, was one of the first disciples of
Jesus. Peter was always outspoken and on the day of pentecost, in chapter 2 of Acts, Peter was the
main speaker. He was considered to be the pillar and rock of the church even though he had fallen
when he had denied Jesus three times. Paul also known as Saul, on the other hand, was not one of the
original disciples of Jesus. He was a former teacher of the law and was converted to Christianity when

Edgar Allan Poe The Black Cat
The Black Cat , in which the narrator related a series of most wild yet most homely events he went
through, is one of Edgar Allan Poe s masterpieces. The narrator first told readers that he had loved
animals so much that he was often laughed at by his companions. He and his wife had many pets,
among which a giant black cat called Pluto was their favourite. But it has all changed since he became
an alcoholic. He suddenly lost his temper and his love for animals. He began to abuse them, including
Pluto. He digged out its eyes because the cat, out of terror, bit him, and then he hung it because he
thought Pluto was avoiding him. That night his house caught a fire and they were reduced to an old
house due to poverty. One day he found a cat

The San Francisco Earthquake By Jerome Clark
Rajdeep Singh
Men lost their reason at these awful moments ( The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 4). This was said
by Jerome Clark, a survivor of San Francisco s deadliest earthquake in history. In this single sentence,
he described the entire disaster through his own eyes ( The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 4). The
Great San Francisco Earthquake may be studied by examining the earthquake, the fire, and the
aftermath of the disaster.
The night before the earthquake was almost like any other night in the bristling city of San Francisco.
The world famous opera singer, Enrico Caruso, was performing at the city s Grand Opera House. The
music and singing filled the building with harmonious notes. Caruso s voice was like thunder, and it
seemed to shake the Opera House. Little did the spectators know that the earthquake to come in a
matter of hours would not only shake, but destroy San Francisco s Opera House (Montagne 1). On
April 18, 1906 at 5:12 AM, the citizens of San Francisco were awakened by intense shaking. The
earthquake lasted from forty to sixty seconds, with a small fore shock that arrived 20 seconds earlier.
It is difficult for scientists to estimate the intensity of this earthquake because of the early and
inaccurate equipment from the turn of the century. With today s modern equipment, seismologists
have estimated the earthquake to be a 7.7 to 8.3 on the Richter scale. This single quake ruptured 290
miles along California s San Andreas fault line

Control and Treatment of Tuberculosis with DOTS Strategy
Introduction
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind, that despite the great achievements
of human society still remains a major health problem. Because due to the socioeconomic problems
and negligence in the treatment of tuberculosis, as well as HIV epidemy, in many countries there are a
large number of smear positive patients often remain undiagnosed. On the other hand, patients failure
to visit a physician after initiation of complaints, Lack of timely diagnosis and treatment by a
physician, inadequate treatment, improper administration of anti TB drugs, patients financial problems
in preparing medications, and patients inadequate information about their disease status and
discontinuation the medication can lead to the creation of drug resistant cases of TB. Since 1993,
World Health Organization has accepted the Directly Observed Treatment, Short course (DOTS) as a
global strategy for TB control. It is estimated that each year about 10 8 million people become
infected with TB and 3 2 million people die annually due to this disease. The World Health
Organization has declared tuberculosis a global emergency and has recommended efforts to control
the disease. Tuberculosis is considered as an endemic and common disease in east mediterranean
countries. Because of Iran proximity to Pakistan and Afghanistan (which are among most
contaminated regions in the world), our country is at serious risk of this disease. TB epidemiological

Visual Aspects Of The Graphic Design
As a creative minded person, I enjoy viewing the world through all its visual aspects. Whether the
things I notice are inanimate objects or breathing beings, I take locations, mediums, and other minute
details into consideration when committing them to memory. I think as an up and coming media artist
it is important to utilize your surroundings with your creations. The details that I notice may inspire
me in my own personal works as well as those that I create for others. Everyday experiences influence
the style and techniques I chose to include or experiment within my works. The process of semiotics is
constantly in practice as I explore and study the world around me.

Though this project was created as an assignment for my making class, much of my own thought and
imagination went into it as the requirements and expectations were vague. Likewise, although this
piece is not graphic design nor digitally created, I feel that this is one my best works that utilized a
distinctive thought process and showcases my artistic style. (This is a photo of the project):
When first introduced to this project the only requirements addressed were that four objects with one
serving as a container were to be created and become a portrait of any person. The other requirement
was the one had to be constructed out of metal, other than that one could create anything they felt was
necessary. I chose Frida Kahlo as the subject of my portrait as she was and is an iconic artist that I find
very intriguing. I had already been aware of Kahlo and several of her works before this specific
assignment, her complicated history, and continual persistence served as my inspiration source. I was
inspired by Kahlo for this portrait since she has made several self portraits within her lifetime and
developed her unique personalities striving as an independent female artist. I felt the need to utilize the
opportunity to create an atypical piece in admiration of the unique individual. The objects of the
portrait are made up of a hand painted flower pot displaying Frida s face in a traditional Mexican
style, a handcrafted monkey, a

Into The Wild Sacrifice Analysis

26 September 2016 Sacrifice as a Value Trade off Between Society and Individual
In any conception of the human condition, sacrifice inevitably accompanies the choices that life
presents. Yet, the definition of sacrifice is ambiguous and relies on individual interpretation: it can be
willingly trading lesser possessions for more desirable goals or forcibly relinquishing values. Despite
the distinct social contexts and time periods, Jon Krakauer s Into the Wild and Kate Chopin s The
Awakening reflect similar notions of sacrifice through their protagonists, Chris McCandless and Edna
Pontellier respectively. Chris McCandless and Edna Pontellier perceive sacrifice as a trade off
between values, where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edna becomes increasingly dissatisfied as a mother woman once she realizes that sacrifice means
choosing between an outward existence which conforms and an inward life which questions (13).
After the summer at Grand Isle, Edna begins to pursue her own interests, relieving herself of
obligations because she no longer feels content to feed upon opinion when her own soul had invited
her (94). Edna s awakening is directly caused by her perception of sacrifice. Realizing that fulfilling
social roles necessitates giving up her autonomy, Edna fights against the sacrifice that her culture
expects from women. She moves out into a pigeon house and refuses to entertain guests on reception
day, small actions which resist the social pressures threatening her personal identity. Edna consciously
destroys the facade of a traditional life for her genuine desires, noting that it is better to wake up after
all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions (112). Self discovery is worth life s
delirium to Edna; the possible social repercussions and stigma are painful but necessary sacrifices.
Edna dismantles the false life she leads, and with it social benefits and status, believing that the the
suffering is preferable to sacrificing and repressing her true self. Her understanding of sacrifice as

The Between China Vs. American Child Nurturing Essay
care nurturing differs between China compared to American child nurturing. What are the differences?
The focus is on values, punishment, actions, and education. Values help mold the culture and shows
how the parent chooses to bring their children up in society. Child care differences show us habits,
morals, and the intentions of a child in these cultures which have different effects. We can compare
childhood, adolescence, and maturity.
Self conduct and child nurturing differences In American and Chinese culture self conduct is used to
teach children. In the Chinese culture they practice Guan, which is to educate, care, control, support
and love. They follow Confucianism, which is criticism to encourage to push them to gain social
values. Confucianism is a strict action that is practiced. China continues to make every effort to reach
for success. China has high values for individualism and respect of adolescents to others. China
always looks toward the future and never lets any short interests interfere with that which they praise
and are valued ideas in which made China a secure society and held together for thousands of years.
China s stable society is payable to the way they obey to their future commitments established by
discipline practices that were taught at childhood.
In the American society we have a solid substructure and legitimacy, which means that everyone has a

Grocery shopping is more diversified and evolved than ever before. Individuals across the nation

have limited locations whereas specialty services have a limited reach. However, two retailers have

Every retail location carries a variety of products that distinguishes it from other stores in the same
chain. Not surprisingly, it is difficult to achieve economies of scale. Supply Chain Mackey describes
his consumers as being part of a cult . Whole Foods believes that the company s emphasis on
perishables and locally sourced produce differentiates their stores from run of the mill supermarkets
and attracts loyal and devoted customers. However, fresh produce is one of the most challenging
product categories to operate due to limited product shelf life and high cost of spoilage. Whole Foods
has tried to circumvent most of the problems inherent in supplying fresh produce to its stores by
sourcing locally and having short and flexible supply chains. In the case of fruits and vegetables,
Whole Foods has buying relationships with local farmers who supply the store with seasonal produce.
Thus, if one farmer is unable to produce a sufficient amount of yellow corn or heirloom tomatoes, the
shortfall can be made up by another farmer. Although challenging to perfect, these short supply chains
are agile and difficult for other big retailers to duplicate.

Bartleby, the Scrivener Story Analysis
Have you ever seen a person so disconnected from society and from what is considered to be normal
that he or she made you question their sanity? If so, you could relate with the lawyer in the story
Bartleby, the Scrivener. In this story, the narrator, who is a lawyer, has a simple man named Bartleby
respond to a job opening as a scrivener. Unbeknownst to the lawyer, Bartleby did not act in the
manner the lawyer would have expected. Bartleby is so outside of what is expected that it is almost as
if he had died and no longer had to live up to society s standards. In this story, Bartleby is portrayed as
a lifeless zombie and is alone with nowhere to go, no one to see, nowhere to be, and no purpose to live
for.
The first case on which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To copy someone else s work nonstop all day every day would get really tiring, but the lawyer says
Bartleby gorges himself on copying papers and documents. Usually when someone gorges him or
herself in something, it is something that they like or enjoy. In Bartleby s case this is what he does, not
because he enjoys it but because it s all he has. This is evident when the lawyer says, He ran a day and
night line, copying by sun light and by candle light. (108) This job is all he had in his life.
Another case in which Bartleby shares similarities to that of a zombie is when he repeats throughout
the story, I prefer not to. No one would ever say these words to his or her boss. That would be crazy,
but Bartleby said these words multiple times to the lawyer, his boss. This is similar to the
characteristics of a zombie, because zombies do not ever listen to anyone. They do what they want to
do and nothing more.
Bartleby took the job as a scrivener to try and find a purpose for his life, but soon after his boss
abandons him, he ends up in jail. At this moment in his life he sees that he truly has nothing. His quest
for purpose as a scrivener has failed. He is at the end of his life, not because he is old or sick
physically, but because he has nothing to live for. While in jail he refuses to eat and soon he dies. His
reason for living died a long time ago, though. His pursuit to be a scrivener was

The Fighting Of The Taliban Essay
Growing up as a female in Afghanistan in the 1900 s was extremely hard being that the Taliban had
then taken over and emerged as a political force and began to establish order. Women were equivalent
to slaves, they were denied education, and they were financially dependent, where they couldn t make
money of their own. Prior to the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan women truly suffered.
While Afghanistan were under the Taliban they had one of the worst human rights records in the
world. The government systematically denied the most basic individual rights. The Taliban closed the
women s university and forced practically all women to quit their jobs. Women were also denied
medical assistance, enforced a highly restrictive dress code and limited the ability if women to move
about the city. The Taliban first became prominent in 199 and took over the Afghan capital, Kabul in
1994 where Jamila Afghani is from.
Unlike her sister Jamila Afghani was allowed to go to school. ONLY because her doctor suggested it.
At a young age, Jamila suffered from polio which affected the left side of her body, which then led her
into depression. The doctor thought that school would distract her from her problems and it did, but
her family wasn t too happy about that. They looked at her as a disgrace. This eventually led to her not
going to school anymore. Jamila family didn t want to be the family that the village didn t like. But,
yet Jamila didn t give up on her hope of one day being educated.

The Pros And Cons Of Hybrid Vehicles
Abstract
The Hybrid vehicle concept nowadays is on the path of becoming one of the brightest stars in the
foreseeable future. Environmental issues that beset the world today such as Global Warming, entail
many long term negative effects which in turn, must not only be solved through short term solutions
but also be countered with long term solutions that will benefit not just the future of society, but the
future of planet earth and the well being of its inhabitants. In response to this global crisis, various
industries and institutions are now searching for alternative energy sources such as the Hybrid vehicle.
The Hybrid vehicle seeks to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on petroleum and diesel by
substituting majority of the powertrain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toyota introduced the first modern production hybrid vehicle, the Prius in Japan in 1997, and Toyota
and Honda introduced hybrids to the US in 1999 and 2000. Both manufacturers use the same hybrid
powertrain design, an input power split system.
Fuel economy
Hybrid systems can increase fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions by 35%. The precise reduction
varies with the technology and capability of the system. The reduction can be hard to quantify as there
is no direct comparable non hybrid vehicle. A study done by Vincentric on October 2014 which
compared 31 hybrids to the closest non hybrids provides a direct comparison of the efficiency benefits
and cost of hybrid systems.
Basics of Hybrid vehicle technology
A traditional vehicle has a mechanical drive train which includes combustion engine, fuel tank,
gearbox, transmission and the wheels. A Hybrid vehicle has two drive trains a mechanical and an
electric. The electric drivetrain includes a battery and an electric motor. In principle these two
drivetrains should be connected together sharing some components such as transmission and

What Are The Forces Within America That Have Shaped Our...
HCAD 730: W 3 Forum Five Questions Suggested Responses. 1. What are the forces within America
that have shaped our health care system? Many forces shape our current healthcare system. Our
cultural belief and values shape our views on our social, political, and economic exigencies. While our
beliefs and values usually represent basic or core impressions of individuals in our society, they are
constantly changing. Thus, they lend a sense of dynamism to our health care system. Our cultural
beliefs and values also impact our sense of ethics, which also influences how we allocate our health
resources and our sense of social justice, or lack of it. And although ACA represents a major reform
the American health care system, history will tell us whether it survives after the next election cycles.
Many of the forces in American health care that affected its evolution in the past are present today.
Advances in medical science and technology still have force and effect on how our health care system
has and will evolve over time. We have a technologically driven health care system. Our educational
system shapes our health care system through its training methods and emphasis on the medical
model. Depending on the discipline, training may key on treating rather than preventing disease. This
generates demand for service delivery. Training of new physicians takes time and money. Because the
costs for a medical education are significant, many students seek postgraduate training in a

recuperate weaponry that their adversary stole, so they charge into valley of Death knowing they could
die due to fact they do not have weapons. The captain make an order can no one dare to make a reply ,
to reason why , but to die and to die. When we read the first line, a reasonable comment should be that
those soldiers are foolish to go to war even though they know that they will fail or rather die.
However, for Tennyson it is not the case, this charge is patriotic and of common sense when their
glory fade? He even congratulates them for their act Honour the light Brigade. We thus see for
Tennyson die for one country, whether the circumstances, is a good thing to do. In addition, for
Kipling s poem If who is more sentimental pass through the advice of father to his son and assumption

The Research On Academic Performance
Abstract
The purpose was to determine what metacognition was and how it affects us. The two hypothesis of
this paper were: uncertainty about academic performance is negatively related to the overall
metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) score and that the MAI factor Knowledge about cognition
is more highly related to uncertainty about academic performance when compared to the MAI factor
Regulation of cognition. Students in a first year undergraduate psychology class filled out surveys to
determine their MAI scores and rated their uncertainty of academic performance on a scale from 0
100. The results for this experiment ended up supporting the hypothesis in that uncertainty was
negatively related to the overall MAI score and the MAI factor knowledge of cognition was more
highly related to uncertainty. This means that most of the participants tended to perform better when
they were aware of metacognition.
Introduction
What is metacognition? The common definition is ones ability to reflect upon, understand, control one
s learning (Schraw Dennison, 1994), refer to knowledge about cognition (Schraw, 2009) and
recognize successful cognitive processing (Fleming, 2014). Metacognition can be broken down into
two categories, knowledge about cognition and regulation of cognition (Schraw Dennison, 1994).
Metacognition can be measured in many different ways. A few measures that are used are absolute
accuracy, relative accuracy, bias, scatter, and

Immature Mechanisms In Middle Adulthood
Cultural fiction Cultural fiction posits that ideas about middle adulthood are created by cultures.
Different cultures have varying views in the ways they recognize and understand middle adulthood
(Hutchison, 2015). In the United States, middle adulthood is often viewed through 2 cultural lenses.
The first sees mid life as a positive time in which an individual has accrued resources and coping
mechanisms. The second view of middle adulthood is a negative over the hill perspective, in which
this stage is viewed as a time of loss and decline (Hutchison, 2015). These differing views of losses
and gains in middle adulthood can be seen in the dynamic between Harvey Milk, and his adversary
(and murderer) Dan White. Harvey, throughout the film, accumulates as many resources as he can and
makes strides in his cause to gain justice for the gay community. Middle adulthood, for Milk, was
truly the prime of his life. His political opponent, Dan White, however, experienced a series of losses,
including his job and his political influence, which led him to become depressed and volcanically
angry. White s view of this time in his life was likely far more negative than Harvey s.
Immature mechanisms vs. mature mechanisms Immature mechanisms and mature mechanism describe
the ways in which people cope with life s demands. Immature mechanisms include denial, projection,
passive aggression, dissociation, acting out and fantasy. Mature mechanisms include sublimation,
altruism and humor

Forehead In The Sky Classification
At 29,035 feet( National Geographic) , Mount Everest is the top of the world. Split in half by the
Nepalese and Chinese border this is just one of the enormous mountains in the mountain range named
the Himalayas. This spectacle of nature doesn t come without it s risks though, about 240 people have
died on the mountain. The locals call Everest Sagarmatha, meaning Forehead in the Sky , and it was
first climbed in 1953. Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, a New Zealand veteran, and Tenzing Norgay, a

the summit on May 29, 1953. Since then about 4,000 climbers have attempted the deadly climb. But
Hillary was the very first to do it.
Many people think climbing a mountain is an almost vertical climb all the way up. But that is not the
case, there are many smaller climbs that go both up and down. The climb is very demanding on the
body. You must be in top shape if you expect to summit the mountain. To get all the way up you need
oxygen tanks, because the air is too thin once you get near the top. There are many camps up the
mountain for climbers to rest for the night or day. But you must acclimatize, or let your body get used

The Origin Of The Banshee
Connor Harkins
Jonathan Tyler
English 102 10
1 February 2017
The Banshee The banshee is a phantom that is said to wail whenever a person is about to die. It would
visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of them because it
shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is on the other side, so
naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the banshee is intertwined with
death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the banshee came from. It ranges from
women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a powerful family to ancient goddesses that
the Christian church turned into a demon. No matter what the origin ... Show more content on

The banshee is said to be a woman that were paid with alcohol to mourn the death of a person. The
family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a their
deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did not like
this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished
for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts.
The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the
family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it.
In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it
is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the
Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De Danann,
the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from Greece (some say,
of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which hid the sun and their
appearance for three days and nights... (White 18). This supports the idea of the church that the
banshee is a demon, because it is the descendant of a Pagan goddess. Women are that to be bringers of
life because they give birth to children. So the tale of the banshee being the

appealing because it was one of the first religions to show life after death. This religion was
Catholicism. This religion has overcame many obstacles to come at where it is today. Catholicism , the
largest self religion branch in christianity, can be explained through the History of Catholicism, the
faith of Catholicism, and the structure of the mass and church.
The history of Catholicism was long and persecuted religion, that has a history dating back to the
times of Jesus. The Catholics believe that Catholicism that traces all the way back to Jesus of

Industrialisation On The Structure Of The Family
The Effects of Industrialisation on the Structure of the Family
The pre industrial family was said to be an extended family consisting of three generations, the
children, parents and the grandparents. The family would all work together in the farms to help
provide for the entire families needs, children as young a 5 or 6 would have been found work to do.
However this was until the Industrial revolution when factories become the main source of work and
development. The pre industrial societies were largely based on extended kinship networks; land and
other resources were commonly owned by a range of relatives that extended well beyond the unit of
the nuclear family. It was very common for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parsons believed that the separation of extended families caused nuclear families to be formed in order
to take advantage of the new job opportunities that had been brought about. He also argued that the
second fundamental change to the family was that they no longer needed to produce their own
materials and food as specialised agencies gradually took over and the home and workplace became
separate as people became wage earners. The state eventually took over the functions of education,
health and welfare and so consequently the nuclear family was able to specialise in child centred
functions like socialisation. Thirdly Parson also argued that the new nuclear unit provided the husband
and wife with very cleaver social roles. The man was the instrumental leader , who was responsible
for the economic welfare of the family group, and goes out and earns money, while the female was
seen as the expressive leader , primarily responsible for the socialisation of the children and the
emotional care and support of family members. Parsons concluded that only the nuclear family could
effectively provide the achievement orientation and geographically mobile workforce required by
modern societies and that there is a functional fit between the extended family and pre industrial

Problem s Framing
The framing effect explains how a problem s phrasing can effect an individual s decision making.
When the problem asks if you would be willing to make a gamble where you have a 90% chance to
lose 5 dollars and a 10% chance to win 95 dollars, most people say they would not take the gamble
(which means they are risk adverse) because the problem states that you have a chance to lose 5
dollars, and this creates a psychological response in the participant because they naturally want to
avoid losses. Another problem asks if you would pay 5 dollars to participate in a lottery where you
have a 10% chance to win 100 dollars and a 90% chance to win nothing. Even though this problem
has the same utility maximization (same amount that can be won) as

D. Virginiana (Didelphis Marsupialis) Essay
D. Virginiana (Didelphis Marsupialis)
The text of this paper will cover a description of D. virginiana, its ecology, history, and research
involving the species.
The first topic to be discussed by this paper is a description of D. virginiana, which was until recently
referred to as Didelphis marsupialis. The description of the opossum will start with a taxonomic
description of the species. Following, will be the opossums appearance, and last will be the life cycle
of the noted species.
The opossum, Didelphis virginiana, takes its name from two different languages. The name Didelphis
is made up of the two Greek words di , and delphys which stand for two wombs referring to the

The females are in heat for approximately thirty days, and the mating session lasts no longer than
thirty six hours (Davis 2). The males forked penis delivers spermatozoa to the, females, paired uteri
(Merritt 36). Gestation lasts for an average of twelve days, and produces up to fourteen young (Yahner
12). The young emerge blind, hairless, and pink weighing approximately one tenth of a gram, and
measure around thirteen millimeters (Merritt 36).
The just born opossums crawl up into the pouch of their mother, with no assistance, and attach to one
of her thirteen nipples (Davis 2). The nipples then enlarge to form a bulb in the mouth of the young.
They will remain attached to the nipple for approximately two months (Merritt 37). However, the
young will remain in the pouch for seventy to eighty days. After which they will climb out, and onto
the mothers back. While on the mothers back the young will begin to eat solid foods. They will remain
there until they are one hundred days old, when they leave their mother to become independent (The
Georgia).
The next topic for discussion in this paper is ecology. This will include, in order of discussion:
distribution and habitats; food sources; predators and parasites; and lastly, behavior and habits.
Didelphis virginiana ranges over most of the United States, excluding only

Injustice In Selma
Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay, is a depressingly relevant film. With protests over the murders of
Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Antonio Martin, the subject of police brutality, specifically targeted
at black people and protesters, is extremely appropriate. The brutalities inflicted on African Americans
in the 1960 s are highly shocking, but it is the knowledge that citizens are still being murdered by our
police that truly hits the hardest. Director Ava DuVernay uses intimate moments and talented actors to
adeptly balance the moral lessons inherent to this story with the humanization of the venerated Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. The film covers a fairly short period of time during the year 1965; during this
time period, Dr. King (played by David Oleyowo) was directly ... Show more content on

This look into the inner life of King and his family adds another level of depth and contrast to the
story, giving the viewer something to empathize with. This sense of empathy is crucial when
appealing to an audience in awe of Dr. King. Additionally, these personal family scenes have FBI logs
superimposed over them, a great touch that adds a certain insidiousness to these heartfelt moments, the
knowledge that their lives are in danger even from their government. David Oleyowo s portrayal of
Martin Luther King Jr. is uncannily close to the real historical figure; this is most apparent in the
scenes of Dr. King giving a speech, as most of us have heard at least one of King s speeches, giving us
a point of comparison. Selma was nominated in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, but in my
opinion, Oleyowo was even more deserving of a nomination in the Best Male Actor category. As a
sidenote, the complete lack of people of color nominated for acting awards in this year s Oscars is a
travesty unto itself, but it is especially so in my eyes after this movie. This film made it all the more
apparent that there

The Impact of The Cultural Revolution on China from 1965-1968
The Cultural Revolution had a massive impact on China from 1965 to 1968. The Cultural Revolution
is the name given to Mao s attempt to reassert his beliefs in China. Mao had not been a very self
motivated leader from the late 1950 s on, and feared others in the party might be taking on a leading
role that weakened his power within the party and the country. Basically, the Cultural Revolution was
a failed attempt by Mao to re impose his authority on the party and therefore, the country as well. Not
only did the Cultural Revolution have a massive impact on China, but many other countries as well.

He attempted to pursue these goals through a massive recruitment of the country s urban youths,
organized into groups called the Red Guards.
Although the Cultural Revolution had a huge impact on all of the citizens of China, it seemed to affect
the youth the most. The youth of China began to get involved after a speech by Lin Biao by 1965. It
urged the students in schools and colleges to return to the basic principles of the CR. The Chinese
youths quickly formed a group called the Red Guards early in the CR, which encouraged all the
Chinese students to disapprove of whoever didn t support Mao and his beliefs or anyone associated
with Mao s rival, Liu Shaoqi (Trueman). Schools and colleges were closed, and the students neglected
their studies. While the Red Guards were very passionate about what they did, their enthusiasm nearly
pushed China into social disorder. The economy was affected very badly, and almost driven to a near
collapse (Busetto, Galduroz, and Satou). Food shortage was one of the main problems the economy
caused. Also In some areas, the activities of the Red Guards got out of hand. They

The Role Of Meritocracy In The United States
In today s society, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen as the rich get richer and
the poor get poorer. America, with the American dream, prides itself in its operation of a meritocracy.
Meritocracy is the social structure that rewards merit. In the US, the system of meritocracy is designed
to provide hope and equal opportunity for people to rise to success. However with the system of
meritocracy in place, the United State s income gap continues to rise. The widening chasm prevents
the mobility of people to work their way up to achieve the American dream. The first problem arises
with the nature of merit. Merit can be defined differently for each individual, so how can the standard
for reward be defined? Is a sense

Volkswagen s Impact On The World s Best Known Car...
I. Volkswagen is one of the world s best known car manufacturers; unfortunately it has damaged its
credibility and reputation with the recent emission scandal that the company was involved in.
Volkswagen failed in establishing the triple bottom line, social responsibility, and sustainability.
The long and commonly held belief was that the only responsibility of business was to maximize the
wealth of its shareholders. Today, however, companies must be socially responsible and focus on what
is now called the Triple Bottom Line that is compromised of: environment, economy and people. All
of this ties into the sustainability goals that companies are now setting for themselves to show the
public that the firm is socially responsible. Recently, Volkswagen has been the center of controversy,
because their diesel engines had a device that could detect when they were being tested and change
their performance to improve the results. Volkswagen s recent debacle has highlighted how failing to
be socially responsible can come back to haunt a company. The emissions cheating scandal that
Volkswagen was caught in hurt the German carmaker s image, brand and reputation. Before the
scandal, the general public held the Volkswagen brand in high esteem. Volkswagen has been a car
brand that has been known for its reliability and quality. However, in light of the scandal, Volkswagen
received a plethora of negative media exposure. A Reuters article stated that the Volkswagen could do

Red Power Movement Research Paper
Question 10: Red Power s Impact on American Indian Identity The Red Power movement and
especially events like Alcatraz, as well as the grassroots movement helped American Indians to restore
their pride and culture and to finally redefine their identity as Indians. Before the period of activism
(1960s/1970s), many Natives were not able to openly identify themselves as Indians and to run free in
their Indianness , because of the stereotypical stigmatization as poor, savages, uncivilized, etc. The
movement s activism is significant for the recreation of the Indian identity and had an enormous
impact on American Indian societies, especially in the urban areas. Major Red Power events like
Alcatraz are symbols for the renewed Indian pride and identity, because they gave American Indians a

Furthermore, American Indian organizations and activist groups like AIM and NIYC emphasized the
rights of all tribes and all Indians, combined to legitimize and empower supratribal Indianness as an
identity, a source of pride, and a basis for activism (Nagel The Politics of American Indian Ethnicity
137), which encouraged especially youths to return to their Native roots. In this connection, the
grassroots movement in the cities, which of course counts to Red Power, plays a major role. It
established various services, for example Health Care Centers, Community Schools and study
programs, for American Indians. In his article, Nicolas G. Rosenthal describes the work of the Indian
Health Care Centers as crucial to advocate for self determination and embrace Indian identity (142,

Comparing and Contrasting An Invitation to a Murder and The Dying Detective An Invitation to a
Murder was written by Josh Pachter and The Dying Detective was scripted by Michael and Mollie
Hardwick. There are very distinct differences between the novella and script; however, they have
commonalities among them too. An Invitation to a Murder revolves around Eleanor Abbott and twelve
other men who stood by the law detectives, investigators, judges, and so on. Meanwhile, The Dying
Detective was about Sherlock Holmes framing a man for murder to prove that the man, Culverton
Smith was guilty for a punishable act. The audience can compare and contrast to indicate these
similarities and differences hidden in the two passages. First ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A locked room mystery is a mystery in which a seemingly impossible crime is committed; for
example, a crime occurs in a room that does not allow an entrance or exit for the criminal. In this case,
it had seemed preposterous to how Mrs. Abbott was going to kill Mr. Abbott and blame the twelve
men. Branigan and Coszyck kept Mrs. Abbott in place, but by the time it was eleven o clock, Mr.
Abbott had died without Mrs. Abbott even laying a single finger on him! Another difference was the
poison used in the stories. In The Dying Detective , the poison was a plant which killed Victor Savage,
Smith s cousin. Smith attempted to use the same plant on Holmes in order to murder him. Holmes had
feigned his death at that time to fool Smith, so his trickery had worked. Watson was hiding behind the
bedhead, so he was able to confirm everything Smith s nefarious acts. Whereas Mr. Abbott s
medication was actually the poison used to kill Mrs. Abbott. The twelve men decided and came to a
verdict for Mrs. Abbott to take the pills that would be venomous to her body and heart. Although both
stories have situational irony in them, how the irony was utilized differs. The situational irony in An
Invitation to a Murder is how Mrs. Abbott planned to blame the twelve men for her husband s murder,
yet she was killed. Eleanor Abbott was confident she would be free, instead she had her life taken

Importance Of School Counseling
According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), Today s school counselors are
vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement,
personal/social development and career development, ensuring today s students become the
productive, well adjusted adults of tomorrow (2017). The definition of a school counselor has changed
throughout the years. There has been a shift from guidance/vocational counseling to a more well
rounded approach. Moving from guidance to counseling, means different job duties and educational
obstacles. Not only do the job responsibilities include career development, social/emotional
development, and academic achievement; included in this change is focus on student s mental health.
With the advancement of this career to the mental health field, comes with educating stakeholders on
the difference. One way to do this is by producing evidence that counseling techniques work in a
language that most stakeholders understand: academics. The money a public school receives correlates
largely with achievement. If the students do well academically, the school becomes more attractive.
Salaries are better; therefore, more qualified teachers apply and communities become more enticing to
tax paying citizens. Just the opposite, schools that perform poorly academically have higher poverty
level, lower teacher experience, and less money paid per student by the state in which it resides. All of

Essay about Steroid Use in People Everywhere
Anabolic steroids can weaken the body s defenses against viral infections and cancers, even at doses
much smaller than those used by cheating athletes. If they are weakened, viral diseases and tumors

The Hippocampus
Introduction:
The OED defines multitasking as dealing with more than one task at the same time. The brain, in
order to multitask, must receive both actions being performed, and dilute the information before
processing. In order to read and listen to something at the same time, for an example, the brain must
take the information being read by the eyes and the pulses coming from the ears, and reduce the
frequency to keep both tasks going efficiently.
The hippocampus is part of the limbic system that controls the emotions and autonomic nervous
system. The hippocampus controls long term and short term memory. It is located in the medial
temporal lobe of the brain behind the Amygdala (Hayhurst, 2002). The hippocampus links memory
and emotion together, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The brain is a muscle that has to have continuous exercise to stay keen and quick with speed. People
in their later years have a harder time remembering things and have trouble applying simple tasks to
their lives because of the damage the brain suffers when not being commonly trained and kept taken
care of. This is a major cause in many mental disorders and diseases diagnosed in later years such as
alzheimers, as well as its stronger partner, dementia, and depression or anxiety. Studies show that
elderly patients showed a much higher percentage of life expectancy for those who gave their brain a
daily challenge such as crossword puzzles and daily brain teasers, compared to their counterpart of
those who did not focus on opening time to practice using their brain to stay lively and aware. Another
major role in keeping the mind young is for the brain to stay social. The ability to interact with people

Edward IV of England if they could not continue with the expedition because of Portugal s claim to

famous shipbuilder in the Elizabethan era Admiral Sir John Hawkins, made the first three voyages and
traded with Brazil. Hawkins went back in 1553 to the Gold Coast and sold goods mainly for gold near

Summary Of Bacchae By Euripides And Oresteia
In this paper, I intend to describe the inner working of the household in Greek civilization on three
levels: family, city, and cosmos of gods. To achieve this goal, we will look into Bacchae by Euripides,
and Oresteia by Aeschylus. Bacchae shows the workings of the house of Cadmus, a royal family,
whose actions directly affect their city. This family tree includes a god, and is strongly affected by the
will of the cosmos, through Dionysus. Oresteia is a play of three parts. We see the families
dysfunctional interactions, and how they impact the city over time. We also see how the gods have an
influence on these characters lives throughout the events that happen. Overall these interactions lead
to the undermining of Greek civilization through death and destruction. Bacchae is a good example of
the three levels of the household. Starting with the level of family we see the flawed family dynamic
in the house of Cadmus. Cadmus has four daughters. Semele is the mother of Dionysus, and Agave is
the mother of Pentheus. Semele claimed the father of her child was Zeus, but the rest of her family did
not believe her tales, calling her a liar. No one in the family, or city for that matter, believed Dionysus
status was true, disrespecting him and his followers. Dionysus say Pentheus ...pays no attention to me
in his prayers. For that I ll show him I am a true god. (Bacc.46 48) Dionysus does just that, showing
them the truth in the worst way possible, enacting his revenge by having Agave unknowingly rip her
own son, Pentheus, apart with the help of her sisters. Agave says she d like to go far away from the
curse of Kithairon....where there s no display of a thyrus to remind me. (Bacc.1384 1386) She know
Dionysus has defeated them, and her son is dead, she wants only to get away from the pain. This royal
family is torn apart, murderer, exiled, and turned to serpents at the hands of one of their own relatives
because they had no respect for him or his followers.
The fact that the family is of royal blood mean what happens to them affects not just the inner
workings of the family, but the city state as a whole, or the second level of the household. When the
city did not believe Dionysus, instead backing the beliefs

  • 2. Acts Of Acts The Acts of the Apostles By: Michael Yarmoshik The book of Acts was written by the physician Luke. Luke was a traveling missionary with Paul. In result, the book of Acts is written mostly about Peter and Paul and how the Christian faith spread to the whole world. Peter, who is known as Simon Peter or Cephas, was one of the first disciples of Jesus. Peter was always outspoken and on the day of pentecost, in chapter 2 of Acts, Peter was the main speaker. He was considered to be the pillar and rock of the church even though he had fallen when he had denied Jesus three times. Paul also known as Saul, on the other hand, was not one of the original disciples of Jesus. He was a former teacher of the law and was converted to Christianity when ... The narrator first told readers that he had loved animals so much that he was often laughed at by his companions. He and his wife had many pets, among which a giant black cat called Pluto was their favourite. But it has all changed since he became an alcoholic. He suddenly lost his temper and his love for animals. He began to abuse them, including Pluto. He digged out its eyes because the cat, out of terror, bit him, and then he hung it because he thought Pluto was avoiding him. • 4. The San Francisco Earthquake By Jerome Clark Rajdeep Singh Men lost their reason at these awful moments ( The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 4). This was said by Jerome Clark, a survivor of San Francisco s deadliest earthquake in history. In this single sentence, he described the entire disaster through his own eyes ( The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 4). The Great San Francisco Earthquake may be studied by examining the earthquake, the fire, and the aftermath of the disaster. The night before the earthquake was almost like any other night in the bristling city of San Francisco. The world famous opera singer, Enrico Caruso, was performing at the city s Grand Opera House. The music and singing filled the building with harmonious notes. Caruso s voice was like thunder, and it seemed to shake the Opera House. Little did the spectators know that the earthquake to come in a matter of hours would not only shake, but destroy San Francisco s Opera House (Montagne 1). On April 18, 1906 at 5:12 AM, the citizens of San Francisco were awakened by intense shaking. The earthquake lasted from forty to sixty seconds, with a small fore shock that arrived 20 seconds earlier. It is difficult for scientists to estimate the intensity of this earthquake because of the early and inaccurate equipment from the turn of the century. With today s modern equipment, seismologists have estimated the earthquake to be a 7.7 to 8.3 on the Richter scale. This single quake ruptured 290 miles along California s San Andreas fault line ... Control and Treatment of Tuberculosis with DOTS Strategy Introduction Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind, that despite the great achievements of human society still remains a major health problem. On the other hand, patients failure to visit a physician after initiation of complaints, Lack of timely diagnosis and treatment by a physician, inadequate treatment, improper administration of anti TB drugs, patients financial problems in preparing medications, and patients inadequate information about their disease status and discontinuation the medication can lead to the creation of drug resistant cases of TB. The World Health Organization has declared tuberculosis a global emergency and has recommended efforts to control the disease. Whether the things I notice are inanimate objects or breathing beings, I take locations, mediums, and other minute details into consideration when committing them to memory. I think as an up and coming media artist it is important to utilize your surroundings with your creations. The details that I notice may inspire me in my own personal works as well as those that I create for others. Everyday experiences influence the style and techniques I chose to include or experiment within my works. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though this project was created as an assignment for my making class, much of my own thought and imagination went into it as the requirements and expectations were vague. Likewise, although this piece is not graphic design nor digitally created, I feel that this is one my best works that utilized a distinctive thought process and showcases my artistic style. (This is a photo of the project): When first introduced to this project the only requirements addressed were that four objects with one serving as a container were to be created and become a portrait of any person. The other requirement was the one had to be constructed out of metal, other than that one could create anything they felt was necessary. I chose Frida Kahlo as the subject of my portrait as she was and is an iconic artist that I find very intriguing. I had already been aware of Kahlo and several of her works before this specific assignment, her complicated history, and continual persistence served as my inspiration source. I was inspired by Kahlo for this portrait since she has made several self portraits within her lifetime and developed her unique personalities striving as an independent female artist. I felt the need to utilize the opportunity to create an atypical piece in admiration of the unique individual. • 7. Into The Wild Sacrifice Analysis Patty Zhang Gilligan Honors American Literature 26 September 2016 Sacrifice as a Value Trade off Between Society and Individual In any conception of the human condition, sacrifice inevitably accompanies the choices that life presents. Yet, the definition of sacrifice is ambiguous and relies on individual interpretation: it can be willingly trading lesser possessions for more desirable goals or forcibly relinquishing values. Despite the distinct social contexts and time periods, Jon Krakauer s Into the Wild and Kate Chopin s The Awakening reflect similar notions of sacrifice through their protagonists, Chris McCandless and Edna Pontellier respectively. Chris McCandless and Edna Pontellier perceive sacrifice as a trade off between values, where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edna becomes increasingly dissatisfied as a mother woman once she realizes that sacrifice means choosing between an outward existence which conforms and an inward life which questions (13). After the summer at Grand Isle, Edna begins to pursue her own interests, relieving herself of obligations because she no longer feels content to feed upon opinion when her own soul had invited her (94). Edna s awakening is directly caused by her perception of sacrifice. Realizing that fulfilling social roles necessitates giving up her autonomy, Edna fights against the sacrifice that her culture expects from women. She moves out into a pigeon house and refuses to entertain guests on reception day, small actions which resist the social pressures threatening her personal identity. Edna consciously destroys the facade of a traditional life for her genuine desires, noting that it is better to wake up after all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions (112). Self discovery is worth life s delirium to Edna; the possible social repercussions and stigma are painful but necessary sacrifices. Edna dismantles the false life she leads, and with it social benefits and status, believing that the the suffering is preferable to sacrificing and repressing her true self. Not surprisingly, it is difficult to achieve economies of scale. Supply Chain Mackey describes his consumers as being part of a cult . Whole Foods believes that the company s emphasis on perishables and locally sourced produce differentiates their stores from run of the mill supermarkets and attracts loyal and devoted customers. However, fresh produce is one of the most challenging product categories to operate due to limited product shelf life and high cost of spoilage. Whole Foods has tried to circumvent most of the problems inherent in supplying fresh produce to its stores by sourcing locally and having short and flexible supply chains. • 10. Bartleby, the Scrivener Story Analysis Have you ever seen a person so disconnected from society and from what is considered to be normal that he or she made you question their sanity? If so, you could relate with the lawyer in the story Bartleby, the Scrivener. In this story, the narrator, who is a lawyer, has a simple man named Bartleby respond to a job opening as a scrivener. Unbeknownst to the lawyer, Bartleby did not act in the manner the lawyer would have expected. Bartleby is so outside of what is expected that it is almost as if he had died and no longer had to live up to society s standards. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To copy someone else s work nonstop all day every day would get really tiring, but the lawyer says Bartleby gorges himself on copying papers and documents. Usually when someone gorges him or herself in something, it is something that they like or enjoy. In Bartleby s case this is what he does, not because he enjoys it but because it s all he has. This is evident when the lawyer says, He ran a day and night line, copying by sun light and by candle light. (108) This job is all he had in his life. Another case in which Bartleby shares similarities to that of a zombie is when he repeats throughout the story, I prefer not to. No one would ever say these words to his or her boss. That would be crazy, but Bartleby said these words multiple times to the lawyer, his boss. This is similar to the characteristics of a zombie, because zombies do not ever listen to anyone. They do what they want to do and nothing more. Bartleby took the job as a scrivener to try and find a purpose for his life, but soon after his boss abandons him, he ends up in jail. At this moment in his life he sees that he truly has nothing. His quest for purpose as a scrivener has failed. The Fighting Of The Taliban Essay Growing up as a female in Afghanistan in the 1900 s was extremely hard being that the Taliban had then taken over and emerged as a political force and began to establish order. Women were equivalent to slaves, they were denied education, and they were financially dependent, where they couldn t make money of their own. Prior to the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan women truly suffered. While Afghanistan were under the Taliban they had one of the worst human rights records in the world. The government systematically denied the most basic individual rights. The Taliban closed the women s university and forced practically all women to quit their jobs. Women were also denied medical assistance, enforced a highly restrictive dress code and limited the ability if women to move about the city. The Taliban first became prominent in 199 and took over the Afghan capital, Kabul in 1994 where Jamila Afghani is from. Unlike her sister Jamila Afghani was allowed to go to school. What are the forces within America that have shaped our health care system? Many forces shape our current healthcare system. Our cultural belief and values shape our views on our social, political, and economic exigencies. While our beliefs and values usually represent basic or core impressions of individuals in our society, they are constantly changing. Thus, they lend a sense of dynamism to our health care system. Our cultural beliefs and values also impact our sense of ethics, which also influences how we allocate our health resources and our sense of social justice, or lack of it. And although ACA represents a major reform the American health care system, history will tell us whether it survives after the next election cycles. Many of the forces in American health care that affected its evolution in the past are present today. Advances in medical science and technology still have force and effect on how our health care system has and will evolve over time. We have a technologically driven health care system. Our educational system shapes our health care system through its training methods and emphasis on the medical model. When we read the first line, a reasonable comment should be that those soldiers are foolish to go to war even though they know that they will fail or rather die. However, for Tennyson it is not the case, this charge is patriotic and of common sense when their glory fade? He even congratulates them for their act Honour the light Brigade. We thus see for Tennyson die for one country, whether the circumstances, is a good thing to do. In addition, for Kipling s poem If who is more sentimental pass through the advice of father to his son and assumption in which one is required to take action in honor of the country. He clearly incites Englishmen to enlist to the army to battle for England. Notwithstanding, the element which is peculiar is that he clearly incites the English to go colonize and reign on India. • 17. The Research On Academic Performance Abstract The purpose was to determine what metacognition was and how it affects us. The two hypothesis of this paper were: uncertainty about academic performance is negatively related to the overall metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) score and that the MAI factor Knowledge about cognition is more highly related to uncertainty about academic performance when compared to the MAI factor Regulation of cognition. Students in a first year undergraduate psychology class filled out surveys to determine their MAI scores and rated their uncertainty of academic performance on a scale from 0 100. The results for this experiment ended up supporting the hypothesis in that uncertainty was negatively related to the overall MAI score and the MAI factor knowledge of cognition was more highly related to uncertainty. This means that most of the participants tended to perform better when they were aware of metacognition. Introduction What is metacognition? The common definition is ones ability to reflect upon, understand, control one s learning (Schraw Dennison, 1994), refer to knowledge about cognition (Schraw, 2009) and recognize successful cognitive processing (Fleming, 2014). Metacognition can be broken down into two categories, knowledge about cognition and regulation of cognition (Schraw Dennison, 1994). Metacognition can be measured in many different ways. • 18. Immature Mechanisms In Middle Adulthood Cultural fiction Cultural fiction posits that ideas about middle adulthood are created by cultures. Different cultures have varying views in the ways they recognize and understand middle adulthood (Hutchison, 2015). In the United States, middle adulthood is often viewed through 2 cultural lenses. The first sees mid life as a positive time in which an individual has accrued resources and coping mechanisms. The second view of middle adulthood is a negative over the hill perspective, in which this stage is viewed as a time of loss and decline (Hutchison, 2015). These differing views of losses and gains in middle adulthood can be seen in the dynamic between Harvey Milk, and his adversary (and murderer) Dan White. Harvey, throughout the film, accumulates as many resources as he can and makes strides in his cause to gain justice for the gay community. Middle adulthood, for Milk, was truly the prime of his life. His political opponent, Dan White, however, experienced a series of losses, including his job and his political influence, which led him to become depressed and volcanically angry. White s view of this time in his life was likely far more negative than Harvey s. Immature mechanisms vs. mature mechanisms Immature mechanisms and mature mechanism describe the ways in which people cope with life s demands. Immature mechanisms include denial, projection, passive aggression, dissociation, acting out and fantasy. Mature mechanisms include sublimation, altruism and humor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hillary and Tenzing took seven weeks to reach the summit on May 29, 1953. Since then about 4,000 climbers have attempted the deadly climb. But Hillary was the very first to do it. Many people think climbing a mountain is an almost vertical climb all the way up. But that is not the case, there are many smaller climbs that go both up and down. The climb is very demanding on the body. You must be in top shape if you expect to summit the mountain. To get all the way up you need oxygen tanks, because the air is too thin once you get near the top. There are many camps up the mountain for climbers to rest for the night or day. • 20. The Origin Of The Banshee Connor Harkins Jonathan Tyler English 102 10 1 February 2017 The Banshee The banshee is a phantom that is said to wail whenever a person is about to die. It would visit a friend or a family member of a Irish person who was dying. People are afraid of them because it shows us our mortality. We are afraid of death because we do not know what is on the other side, so naturally we would be afraid of the harbinger of death. The origin of the banshee is intertwined with death as it is in its spectre form. There are many legends that the banshee came from. It ranges from women who took alcohol to mourn the death a member of a powerful family to ancient goddesses that the Christian church turned into a demon. No matter what the origin ... The family would pay the woman, who was normally and alcoholic, in drinks to cry at the grave a their deceased loved one to make it seem like they were very respected. The Christian church did not like this, so came about the story of the banshee. One theory of the banshee is that they are being punished for their insincere mourning and alcoholism. They haunt a family and not a place unlike many ghosts. The banshee probably haunts the family out of loyalty to them from their life of mourning for the family. The origin of the banshee goes farther than that, it has a more supernatural myth to it. In Irish myth, the banshee is considered a fairy and so the church says that is it a demon wailing that it is losing souls to heaven. It is said that the banshee comes from the ancient god race known as the Tuatha De Danann. According to Carolyn White in A History of Irish Fairies, The Tuatha De Danann, the divine folk descended from the mother goddess Dana or Danu, were gods from Greece (some say, of the Golden race) who came to Ireland enshrouded by a magical mist which hid the sun and their appearance for three days and nights... Parsons believed that the separation of extended families caused nuclear families to be formed in order to take advantage of the new job opportunities that had been brought about. He also argued that the second fundamental change to the family was that they no longer needed to produce their own materials and food as specialised agencies gradually took over and the home and workplace became separate as people became wage earners. The state eventually took over the functions of education, health and welfare and so consequently the nuclear family was able to specialise in child centred functions like socialisation. Thirdly Parson also argued that the new nuclear unit provided the husband and wife with very cleaver social roles. The man was the instrumental leader , who was responsible for the economic welfare of the family group, and goes out and earns money, while the female was seen as the expressive leader , primarily responsible for the socialisation of the children and the emotional care and support of family members. With protests over the murders of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Antonio Martin, the subject of police brutality, specifically targeted at black people and protesters, is extremely appropriate. The brutalities inflicted on African Americans in the 1960 s are highly shocking, but it is the knowledge that citizens are still being murdered by our police that truly hits the hardest. Director Ava DuVernay uses intimate moments and talented actors to adeptly balance the moral lessons inherent to this story with the humanization of the venerated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film covers a fairly short period of time during the year 1965; during this time period, Dr. King (played by David Oleyowo) was directly ... • 37. Summary Of Bacchae By Euripides And Oresteia In this paper, I intend to describe the inner working of the household in Greek civilization on three levels: family, city, and cosmos of gods. To achieve this goal, we will look into Bacchae by Euripides, and Oresteia by Aeschylus. Bacchae shows the workings of the house of Cadmus, a royal family, whose actions directly affect their city. This family tree includes a god, and is strongly affected by the will of the cosmos, through Dionysus. Oresteia is a play of three parts. We see the families dysfunctional interactions, and how they impact the city over time. We also see how the gods have an influence on these characters lives throughout the events that happen. Overall these interactions lead to the undermining of Greek civilization through death and destruction. Bacchae is a good example of the three levels of the household. Starting with the level of family we see the flawed family dynamic in the house of Cadmus. Cadmus has four daughters. Semele is the mother of Dionysus, and Agave is the mother of Pentheus. Semele claimed the father of her child was Zeus, but the rest of her family did not believe her tales, calling her a liar. No one in the family, or city for that matter, believed Dionysus status was true, disrespecting him and his followers. Dionysus say Pentheus ...pays no attention to me in his prayers. For that I ll show him I am a true god. (Bacc.46 48) Dionysus does just that, showing them the truth in the worst way possible, enacting his revenge by having Agave unknowingly rip her own son, Pentheus, apart with the help of her sisters. Agave says she d like to go far away from the curse of Kithairon....where there s no display of a thyrus to remind me. (Bacc.1384 1386) She know Dionysus has defeated them, and her son is dead, she wants only to get away from the pain. This royal family is torn apart, murderer, exiled, and turned to serpents at the hands of one of their own relatives because they had no respect for him or his followers. The fact that the family is of royal blood mean what happens to them affects not just the inner workings of the family, but the city state as a whole, or the second level of the household. When the city did not believe Dionysus, instead backing the beliefs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
