Historical Perspectives On The Colonial Revival In...
Whatever is new, Is bad : Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America
The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of
American culture from the 1870s to its peak between 1880 and 1940. The Colonial Revival was
more about ideology, but most often manifested itself through decorative arts and architecture.
Elements of pseudo colonial furniture, arts and architecture symbolically served as tools to
promote the republican ideas of democracy, patriotism and moral superiority.
In many ways the Colonial Revival was a direct reaction to the side effects of
Industrialization and progress. Ironically, frequently participants of the revival used modern
techniques as a means to accomplish their singular goal. Historian Alan Axelrod argues,
Colonialism is not a surface phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life,
but a network of communications and linkages that reach deep into American experience and
behavior.
Historians examine the movement from various perspectives; the Colonial Revival as a
social and cultural movement, its representation in U.S. material culture, and its significance to
immigration and nationalism. Scholarship includes everything from Alan Axelrod s The
Colonial Revival in America from 1985 to Briann G. Greenfield s Out of the Attic: Antiques in
Twentieth Century New England from 2009. A variety of monographs and collections of essays
will be analyzed to determine correlations and points of dissent within the historiography of the
Colonial Revival in the United States.
The Colonial Revival has also been a popular area of examination in the museum
community as evidenced by Geoffrey Rossano s Creating a Dignified Past: Museums and the
Colonial Revival and Thomas Denenberg s Wallace Nutting and the Invention of Old America in
particular, with sections devoted to museums treatment of the phenomenon in other readings.
Rossano s collection of essays examines the impact of the Colonial Revival on the museum
profession. Thomas Denenberg himself is a curator of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
and his monograph Wallace Nutting s Invention of Old America served as a

Essay On Gene Expression In Bacteria
In this experiment, I looked at what affect varying environmental variables have on gene expression in
bacteria. More specifically, I observed the effect of temperature on the common soil bacteria Serratia
marcescens. S. marcescens can appear either red, pink, white, or colorless due to the presence, or the
lack, of several specific enzymes within the bacteria that cause the production of the red pigment
known as prodigiosin. All organisms contain DNA, which houses genes that contain information
needed for the cell to produce a specific protein or enzyme required to carry out a particular
biochemical function or to fulfill a particular cellular process. Certain factors, such as temperature,
light, or pH, can cause certain genes to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After mixing the two, I placed the mixture in a small test tube and placed that in the microwave to
bring it to a boil. After about 30 seconds in the microwave, I noticed that the test tube s rubber stop,
which was placed there to prevent the water from evaporating in the microwave, had completely
popped off. I cleaned up the mess in the microwave and made the nutrient agar mixture again;
however, this time I placed the mixture in a larger beaker and covered it with the top of a sterile petri
dish similarly to how I had previously boiled Mr. Goble s Erlenmeyer flask of agar. Again, after 30
seconds in the microwave, the petri dish lid had come off of the beaker and the mixture had boiled
over and onto the microwave. I cleaned the microwave for the second time that day and decided that I
needed an even larger container to boil the mixture in, as it seemed the boiling water had nowhere to
go in my previous efforts and forced the ejection of each lid. After realizing that the largest flask I was
in possession of was the large Erlenmeyer from Mr. Goble, I decided to clean it out quickly (as there
was still some remaining nutrient agar in the bottom of it) and make my own nutrient agar for the third
time and use the large flask to boil it in. After the third time, my efforts to boil my own nutrient agar
proved successful and I poured about 15 mL of the liquid agar into two petri dishes; one

The Secret In Their Eyes Film Analysis
After watching both films The Secret in Their Eyes(2009) and Missing(1882), many ideas and
concerns ran throughout my head. Many civilians were kidnapped and later killed. Those were big
concepts happening during the films and that was done great by the director Juan José Campanella.
The disappearance and assassination of both Argentines and Chileans made these films similar. The
Secret in Their Eyes(2009) is a film written by Eduardo Sacheri and the director Juan José
Campanella. The film was released in August 13, 2009. The film took place in during the mid 1970s in
Argentina. During 1976 is the time is when the Argentina s Dirty War was happening. The Dirty War
was a war in Argentina when the military had power and was there to overthrow Isabel Peron. As
Galeano stated, The same process of repressing and strangling the people occurred under Ongania in
Argentina (Galeano, 212 213). More the 30,000 civilians were kidnapped and raped or tortured then
were killed by the military. Some were most likely killed and others disappeared.

Reflection On Volunteer Service

Volunteer Service Reflection I have volunteered at multiple facilities such as MD Anderson, Habitat
for Humanity, Disaster Relief at church but for this assignment I wanted to do something different. I
constantly do volunteer work due to the company I work for, Gap Inc. has an organization for
employees Be What s Possible and donates money for the hours I volunteer to the non profit
organization of my choice. My good friend is part of the education department here at UHD and said
that some students from other classes were volunteering at juvenile facilities and I was intrigued,
therefore I teamed with my volunteer leader for Gap and reached out to see if volunteering there

But in reality, some of the teachers just let go of what the students say even if it is disrespectful, while
others were very caring and some were extremely strict. After getting to talk and know some of them,
I can tell they are good kids deep down. They have ambition and dreams just like everybody else,
some even talked to me about wanting to become engineers and wanting to attend the University of
Houston someday. They are also very respectful boys, they would help me carry my desk over next to
the teacher and they would help me pass out textbooks and they would always say please and excuse
me. I believe that deep down these boys made mistakes but they are on the verge of correcting them
and eventually getting themselves straightened out. During my time there I did a lot of observing,
helped the teacher grade some papers and tried to help the students with their work. I also got to
answer a lot of their questions and curiosity they had about college and what it was like. During class
there is always a teacher and there was Mr. Rhodes for behavior purposes, if one of the students
misbehaved he would take them out of the classroom and talk to them. He was also very close to the
students, there was a clear bond between them. During lunch he would always put on the football
channel and they would just watch and chat. Even though the teachers and Mr. Rhodes are strict and
demanding with the students, I believe that is what really helps motivate them. Some of them

Seamus Heaney Blackberry-Picking Essay
Seamus Heaney s poem Blackberry Picking , conveys not only a literal description of picking
blackberries, but it also has a deeper meaning of the whole experience and that is death. Heaney uses
simile, imagery, and tone to reveal the deeper understanding, which is death, to the poem.
As Heaney mentions his hands being dirty and sticky from picking out many blackberries, he uses
simile to compare his sticky hands to Bluebeard s. Our palms sticky hands as Bluebeard s . Bluebeard
is a character (fictional) who murdered his wives, how can Heaney compare his sticky palms with a
murderer. Heaney compares his hands to a murderer which first gives the idea of death. Heaney is
Bluebeard (not literally).
He also introduces death to the poem by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He states I always felt like crying. It wasn t fair that all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot. Each year I
hoped they d keep, knew try would not , the tone is disappointment. He had hope of the fruit staying
sweet and fresh for a very long time but knew that that would be impossible. After going through so
much, picking the berries, he always finds himself with rotten berries. Death, in general, can
disappoint you because you can just hope that death doesn t come by when we all know that it will.
To conclusion, Heaney reveals death in this poem by using simile, imagery, and tone. the berries
represent death as they go through the cycle of being fresh to being rotten. First, Heaney represents
death by comparing his hands to a character, Bluebeard, for ripping out the berries from the bushes
and having his hands all dirty and sticky from the hard work. Then, he uses imagery to describe how
the fruit changed by rotting. Lastly, he uses tone by revealing how disappointed he was of seeing the
fresh sweet berries turn into old sour berries that were no longer fresh. Although he has hope, he finds
himself apprehensive about the berries going to waist and knows that the life cycle will never change
and that it will never be

The Story Of Kohl s
The story of Kohl s commenced during 1962 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Founded by Max Kohl, the
company initially began as a department store, meaning it sold a variety of goods, which back then
included food produce. The company BATUS inc., a division of British American Tobacco, took
control of Kohl s Food department by purchasing 80% of their stake. BATUS was not able to deal
with the amounting competition, so they went out of the retail business by the mid 1980 s, and later
sold Kohl s food stores to the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea company (A P) in 1983. Kohls ranked
eighth in Wisconsin s top 100 privately owned companies by 1987, and the greatest growth year was
in 1988 when the company purchased 26 federated department stores. This

Descriptive Essay About A Swishy
It was my sophomore year. The weather was partially cloudy and felt just right. It was not too hot nor
too cold, and it s also football season. A season everyone at school gets hyped up for, even if our
football team wasn t the best in the district. The marching band is getting ready to perform our field
show for maybe the second time. Of course, band members including me stay after school just to hang
out and prepare ourselves to perform. They invited me to 7 Eleven to buy snacks, I tagged along
because I was craving Cheetos at that time. Juan and Andre, which were both freshmen at that time

how to cross the street stoned. If you were one of those cars passing by at that time you ll probably

We got our snacks and drinks from the store, as we came back I felt sluggish. The marching band

had went home to take a nap which they were dumb enough to believe my story. The band started to
warm up and as I anticipated, there was no way I was able to play or function. Dozing off every
second, made it hard for me to follow the director s instructions. Marching into the stadium and
playing a fanfare every chance we had, time went by faster. Gaining back my conscience, I then

An Exploration Into The Lack Of Female Interest
An Exploration into the Lack of Female Interest in Mathematics and Possible Solutions to the Problem
Introduction
As soon as the suggested topics were revealed, it was obvious to me which topic caught my attention,
Equity in mathematics learning and teaching addressing social issues related to gender, class and
ethnicity . Obviously this topic was too broad a subject for me to research into with any depth so I
began researching into the area which would most interest me. The result was the issue of gender
within learning. I came to this conclusion after finding an interesting article on same sex classes, Can
Single sex Classes in Co educational Schools Enhance the Learning Experiences of Girls and/or
Boys? An Exploration of Pupils Perceptions by Carolyn Jackson. She talks about an experiment with
pupils within a year 7 class, where they are put into single sex classes for mathematics and are
assessed by their test results as well as being interviewed about their opinion and confidence. This
idea instantly grabbed my attention. Therefore I have decided to start my assignment by discussing
how gender affects the learning of mathematics, focussing on secondary school mathematics, and then
continue to analyse whether using same sex classes could be a useful adjustment in today s secondary
schools.
As a mathematician myself I have gone through the educational system and seen the uneven
proportion of boys to girls within mathematics classrooms. As soon as mathematics became

Multiple Independent Levels Of Security Architecture
Another security measure is the implementation of the Multiple Independent Levels of Security
Architecture (MILS). The MILS model is best used for high assurance systems as the structure of the
model has stringent access controls and work flows which a regulated by a microprocessor. This
model is simpler than others but offers tighter security. The MILS model is broken down into four
components: A Separation Kernel, Middleware, Applications and a Partitioning Communications
System. This structure is similar to other security models as they can have a security kernel which
regulates drivers and applications. The aspects that separate the MILS model are its security policies
and the way in which they are implemented. (OIS) Unlike the ... Show more content on

The Middleware is responsible for ensuring information sent out is properly defined labeled, filtering
and damaging messages and ensuring the information flow restrictions are followed and remain intact.
This level also contains device drivers, file systems POSIX which are traditionally located in the
kernel of other security models (OIS, 2015). According to Objective Interface Systems, the
Application Layer is responsible for enforcing application layer security policies (2015). These
security polies can include encryption protection firewalls, and/or IDS settings. This layer is located
on top of the middle layer. This layer is unique as the applications security can be evaluated on its own
aside from the security of the entire system (Xining Yameng, 2012). The forth component of the
system is the Partitioning Communication System (PCS). This component works in conjunction with
the Middleware Layer and controls the interaction between the different MILS sections. The PCS
provides end to end protection to the sections on the network not directly connected to the MILS. It
assists with security for the information flow, data isolation. Periods processing and damage limitation
(OIS, 2015).
Advantages of MILS
The MILS model has several advantages. The primary advantage to MILS is rooted in the system s
design. The MILS model was designed for security thus making the architecture

A Sand County Almanac Summary
Fall is a time of change. The leaves change from green to brilliant shades of brown, red and yellow.
The seasons begin to change from the dog days of summer to the cool stillness of winter. Fall is my
favorite time of the year. When asked to choose just one chapter from A Sand County Almanac, my
first idea was to look in the section about the fall.
When reading the chapters about Fall, the one that struck a chord was the chapter about October. I
chose this section because it really seemed to paint a picture that reminded me of what the fall is like.
In Smoky Gold , the writer discusses hunting for birds. This is defiantly something that I associate
with the month of October. In Too Early, the author discusses what a person who chooses to go out
into the wild before dawn can witness. In Red Lanterns, the author discusses a pheasant hunt. All of
these readings give a feeling of fall. They reflect the month for which they were entitled and they help
to paint a picture of what I believe fall is. That is why I chose to write about this specific section of A
Sand County Almanac.
The first section of this chapter is called Smoky Gold. In this section of the chapter, the writer
discusses grouse hunting. He states that few people are aware of the grouse population in Adams
County. He goes on to say that most hunters speed on through to the counties farther north. He smiles
as he sits in the tamaracks and listens to sounds of these other hunters speeding by. The point he is
trying to make here is that there can be beauty in many places; you just have to take the time to slow
down and experience this beauty. The hunters that speed by are on their way to hunt in another place.
This is most likely a place they have been before. They are used to doing things the same way and
they do not take the time to try anything new. If they would slow down, they may come to discover
that what they are looking for can be found in Adams County.
Section two is called Too Early. In this section of the chapter, the author discusses the beauties that can
be seen by people and animals that get up before the sunrise. The author describes showing up at the
marsh too early for the sun was really a lesson in listening. The

Judith Plaskow Research Paper
Judith Plaskow Judith Plaskow began her study of feminism while pursuing a Phd at Yale and
continued on to cofound B not Esh, a Jewish feminist spirituality collective, as well as author many
theological books (Braude, 2004, pg 219). She grew up in a Reform Judaism household and as a child
focused on ethical monotheism , which lead to her study of the Holocaust and the development of a
self image of victimhood (2004, pg 220). It was Naomi Weisstein, a psychologist, who spoke to
Plaskow women s group at Yale that really spurred her to reconsider her own ambitions in life (2004,
pg 221). In her discovery of feminism, Plaskow felt that she was able to move past her self identity as
a victim and began to examine how her womanhood and Jewishness could contribute to the world
(2004, pg 222). She began to connect feminism with religion along with her college friend Carol P.

Christ is the main leader of the Goddess Movement, although she grew up in a rather conservative
Christian family (Braude, 2004, pg 97 98). Upon entering Yale, her political views were opposite
those of her childhood, however she was still treated more as a female body than a female person
(2004, pg 99). Eventually, she was able to make life giving connections between herself and other
women at Yale, such as Plaskow (2004, pg 100). Christ tried to find a religion that could nourish her

to the idea of a Goddess, rather than the male images of God she was accustomed to (2004, pg 102).
This Goddess allowed women to have an affirmation of their power, body and will (2004, pg 103).

How Did Classical Music Influence Mozart s Life
Most people, when they hear the first notes of Symphony No. 40 in g minor, instantly recognize that it
was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but if they hear the name Donna Elvira, a strong female
opera character, Mozart s name doesn t exactly come to mind. The Classical age, when Mozart lived,
was filled with many incredible composers and was heavily influenced by the Catholic church. Many
people influenced Mozart s life but three of the most impactful people or groups were his family,
Haydn and various members of royalty that he encountered. Mozart impacted almost every kind of
music, but the two that he arguably changed the most are opera and spiritual music. Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart lived in Austria during the Classical period, a time when the Catholic church was

The Classical Age of music lasted from 1750 to 1820. The middle of the eighteenth century witnessed
perhaps the most comprehensive change that has ever taken place in the history of Western music.
This quote, stated by F.E. Kirby, shows how revolutionary the classical music was at the time. This
change in music history led to some of the most revolutionary music in history. This quote claims that
classical music was a large impact on the rest of the music in music history. The Classical age was
when the Baroque style of music, very complicated and many melodies at once, slowly changed into
the Classical style, a more formal and graceful style of music. Over the course of the Classical era the
music became more complex and led into the Romantic Era. During the Classical Age of Music there

Sunken Treasure: United States v. Smiley
July 21st, 1862, the Golden Gate left San Francisco for Panama. On board was a secret treasure
amounting to $1,450,000. Three miles a half away from the Mexican Shore a fire broke, and went into
pieces just 250 ft. away. $1,200,000 were recovered in a port by Smiley and his associates, which he
gained license from Mexico to retrieve. Shippers and Smiley both disagreed about how the share of
the recovered treasure should be split. After distributed evenly, things remained calm, but later on,
March 1864, in the U.S. Circuit Court, Smiley was indicted for plundering and stealing the treasure
from the Golden Gate.

A Brief Look at Image Segmentation
Mei wang, Xiao Wei Wu, Hsiung Cheng Lin, Jian ping wang(2012) discussed the idea of following.
Today medical images are widely used. To achieve a clear and noise free images Image segmentation
is essential point. In this paper a new image segmentation method that is proportion of foreground to
background is used also called PFB. Using this method on human brain image we experiment the
result that the number of iteration steps for the threshold T is reduced. Using this method over
segmentation and discontinuities also can be avoided. Finally proposed a new method using both
Thresholding image segmentation and edge detection segmentation algorithm based on the Proportion
of Foreground to Background. After this the basic principal is define in this paper. Proportion of
Foreground to Background Algorithm combine the traditional iterative algorithm. Anita Khanna, Dr.
Manish Shrivastva(2012) In their paper they used unsupervised technique of segmentation which is
simple and give satisfactory result. We use Ultrasound (US) images and apply unsupervised
segmentation technique. There is a problem to segment Ultrasound image because of low contrast and
high speckle noise. In this paper we use different unsupervised technique like Thresholding; k means
cluster technique and expectation maximization and compare all the result. Ultrasound images are
texture feature image and expectation maximization (EM) technique gives best result of segmentation.

One of the websites I assessed was called clever hinge . This was a product that means you do not lose

This colour scheme really helped persuade me into wanting to buy their product. Not only was the
colour scheme well thought out, the entire website was laid out in a way that was easy to navigate.
Due to this it was very easy to work out where the information on their product was stored. This
information in itself consisted of a few very well done images of their design as well as providing
basic information on the product. It was for this reason I was tempted to buy the product.

Apple s Case Against Steve Jobs
Apple was founded by three men; Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne in 1976. The company
received an investment from Mark Markkula in 1977, introducing Apple Computer Inc. and the
release of the Apple II. The Apple III and Apple IIe were then released. The Apple III was a high end
machine that was highly priced, whereas the Apple IIe was a computer used in various households. In
1980, Apple became a public company which increased their share price significantly, making most of
Apple s staff members millionaires. By 1983, Apple became a Fortune 500 company as a result of
their rapid growth (Alcom, 2012). In the early 1980 s, Apple encountered heavy competition from
IBM which sold millions of PCs. Competition continued throughout the years with Microsoft
releasing software such as Word and BASIC. The original Macintosh was released in 1984, known as
the computer for the rest of us , while the Apple IIe simultaneously received awards for excellence
(Alcom, 2012). Apple filed a lawsuit against Steve Jobs after he resigned due to political issues within
the company. Jobs claimed he would start a new company so Apple filed a lawsuit to stop him from
using sensitive information to be in competition with Apple. Nevertheless, Jobs started the NeXT Inc.
company which made it the first computer on the market that was twice as powerful as Apple s
products and the price was $1000 less. The company performed well over the years with Job
introducing NeXTstep OS which was highly

The Consequences Of Space Travel And Exploration
1. Space travel and exploration have many benefits, however, there are also some possible
consequences. Space travel is worth it for many reasons. Just like the ocean; space is infinite and there
is another world to discover so to speak. There are so many things that we don t know about the ocean
and space. For one, space is a mystery containing several artifacts, entities, and possible species that
could have the ability to open doors to a whole new universe. There could potentially be life on
another planet or even a planet similar to earth that can support life. However, mankind will never
know unless we opt to explore the kingdom of space.
2. Reasons why some naysayers believe there shouldn t be more space travel is the cost. It costs $500
$700 million every time a space shuttle flies. Additionally, it costs space tourists $20 million to fly to
the space station. Some will ask why spend money on space exploration when there are so many other
things that should take precedence. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was built in 1978 which
cost $12 billion to build it. The Galileo which is Europe s GPS has an estimated cost of $6.3 billion.
The Apollo Space Program started in 1961 1972, and the total cost of the program was $109 billion.
As you can see, space travel is extremely expensive. In addition to the costs of the programs and the
shuttles, is the salary that is paid to the Astronauts. In 1969 Neil Armstrong was paid $20,000 for his
trip to space. In 2012 Astronauts were paid $125,000 for their trip to space so the cost has increased
immensely.
3. Another possible reason that people don t agree with space exploration is that if there are alien
lifeforms, there might be a chance that they will try to harm the human species. The famed physicist
Stephen Hawking is one who believes this to be the case. This is what he had to say on the topic: Such
advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets
they could reach. This statement was mentioned in 2010 on an episode of Into the Universe with
Stephen Hawking. He also stated that Alien civilization would have no problem wiping out the human
race the way a human might wipe out a colony of ants. We

Rogue States Essay

Statement of the problem
Rogue state is a controversial term applied by some international theorists to states they consider
threatening to the world s peace. This means meeting certain criteria, such as being ruled by
authoritarian regimes that severely restrict human rights, sponsor terrorism, and seek to proliferate
weapons of mass destructions Rogue states have been applied to a number of nations, often under the
control of authoritarian regimes suspected of promoting terrorism, proliferation of unconventional
weapons, or both. Nation States such as Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Pakistan and North Korea currently

Diplomatic efforts have failed to freeze these nuclear development efforts. These programs pose a
threat to international security. They also have the potential to ignite regional nuclear arms races as

Security lack is empirical evidence to such questions: Of what significance are Rogue States to
International Security? Do Rogue States constitute serious threat to International Security?
Theory
In international relations I take the stance of a realist. Realists believe that mankind is not inherently
benevolent but rather self centered and competitive. Therefore States in international relations are
archaic and it becomes a game of the survival of the fittest. In order for one to understand rogue states
in International Security one must first recognize and have an understanding of the two main theories
in international relations: Realism and liberalism. What is Realism? Realism is interpreted in many
different ways. Realism is the tendency to view or interpret things as they actually are. Machiavelli

the international System is archaic. The Prominent theorists in the school of

How Did The Union Win The Civil War A Turning Point
During the time of the civil war, there were a lot of things that happened that affected the outcome of
the civil war. When this war started, both sides had reason to believe that they would win, but both
were surprised that the war was going to be longer and much more difficult than expected. After this
long and difficult war, it is safe to be said that the turning points and advantages that helped the Union
win this war were the resource ratio advantage, the population differential advantage, the battle of
Gettysburg, Emancipation Proclamation, and Sherman s March.
The civil war was a four year long war. Four years worth of war requires four years worth of

The battles were fought in effort for the North to take over all of America in order to run all of this
land the Northern way instead of having the South run it a different way down South. The battle of
Gettysburg was memorable because this all changed. During this battle the South for the first time
went on the offensive to try and push the North further back into their territory and attacked them. The
two sides battled for three days until the North gained the upper hand and won the battle. Document 6
says this about the end of the battle, The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, sometimes referred
to as the High Water Mark of the Rebellion resulted not only in Lee s retreat for Virginia, but an end to
the hopes of the confederate states of America for independence (Document 6). This quote is
explaining the fact that the Lee and his army was not going to be able to force the North back so they
were eventually doomed. Without the force to push the enemy back you are going to be overrun so
this was a turning point in the war when this was realized. This may be seen as a turning point in the
war which it is, but it can also be considered an advantage. Since the North could not be over run there
was not as much pressure on them because they knew they could defend and they did not have to be as
worried of attack. The North used this advantage on its journey of winning the civil

Public Schools Vs Magnet Schools Essay
For parents raising children selecting an appropriate school can be challenging .... Public, private, faith
based, magnet, charter, STEM, and home schooling. Here is a breakdown and simple explanation of
the differences to guide you along when making selections.
Public Schools: Receive funding from local, state, and government entities. Charter and Magnet are
also considered public schools. They must admit all students within their zoning. There are some
schools that will except students outside their zone if there is room. For example, a Burbank High
School student may prefer the dance company or football team at Burroughs High School, which is
across town. They can apply and if there is room, they may attend there.

These are public schools that charge no tuition, but can be very competitive to get into to. They are
mostly known for their special programs and high academic standards. The application process entails
testing difficult. Some have boarding facilities so that students from outside the area can attend. Their
first priority is a diversified student register.
STEM or STEAM: These are magnet schools. Those that are STEM focus on Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics. STEAM include the previous four but also include the Arts. (See
below).
Private Schools: These schools charge tuition and rely heavily on funding and donations from outside
sources. Some private schools are co ed while others can be all boy or all girl campuses.
Independent Schools: These schools are private and operate as nonprofit run by a board of trustees.
Their assets come from tuition and private donations. They can be religious but cannot be governed by
them nor receive charitable donations from them. Several of these schools also have boarding
capabilities for students attending that are not from the area. Average tuition is about 18,000 per year,
for the boarding student about 35,000 per

The Impact Of Franz Ferdinand s Assassination On World War I
In 1914 Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian Black Hand, assassinated Archduke Franz
Ferdinand, heir to the Austro Hungarian Empire, instigating an immediate cause of World War I. As
the third largest European power by area, the Empire was a powerful presence leading up to World
War I, with a population of over fifty million people and an army of 400,000 soldiers. The conflicts
among European powers and the disorder in the Balkans in the 19th and 20th centuries led to a
situation in which Franz Ferdinand s assassination proved to be the tipping point in the fragile
relationship between Austria Hungary and the South Slav nationalities that threatened the Empire both
internally and externally. His death caused a costly war in terms of both lives and the economy in the
South Slav region and further undermined the stability of Serbia. Princip assassinated the heir to the
throne in an attempt to spark a revolution that would result in Slavic independence from Austria
Hungary. However, before his death, Franz Ferdinand supported economic development for Slavs
within the Austro Hungarian Empire and favored more equal measures toward the South Slav
nationalities. Thus, Franz Ferdinand had served as a roadblock to the extreme militant wing within
Austria Hungary. With the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Serbian extremists damaged the
opportunity for more moderate Slavic peoples within Austria Hungary to achieve greater autonomy
under Austro Hungarian rule since Ferdinand

Importance Of Quality Assurance Is A Case Management Program
An important aspect of Quality Assurance is a case management program. Case management is
frequently used for patients that have complex problems and require numerous services over an
extended period of time. Regardless of the type of case management program, they all have a similar
purpose to coordinate the care and treatment for patients with serious and life threatening conditions
over an extended period of time. Case management programs are concerned with both reducing costs,
and improving quality of care. In addition, there are some strengths, and limitations to case
management programs. Furthermore, the importance of care management programs in the future will
be discussed, along with the important role of gatekeepers in the care management process. Case
management programs are concerned with both reducing costs, and improving quality of care.
Providing patients with the care they need is essential for a health care organization, it is also essential
to provide care in a cost effective manner. Case management program goals include: promoting
patient satisfaction by optimizing patient self care, and providing high quality, cost effective care
(Case Management, n.d.). To focus on improving quality of care, case management programs must
focus on the patient, routinely involve the patient in the development of the care plan, routinely
monitor, evaluate, and modify the care plan to achieve optimal patient outcomes, and collaborate care

Essay on Chinese Women and the Impact of the One-Child...
When one thinks of China it is common to conjure up images of rice fields and of the great wall, but
also of crowded cities teeming with people and bicycles and cars. One rarely thinks of a nation
populated mostly by men and boys, with a noticeable yet surreal absence of women. While this is a bit
of an exaggeration, it has been noted over the past several decades that there is an alarmingly
imbalanced sex ratio. The policy has clearly contributed to the nation s unnatural gender imbalance, as
couples use legal and illegal means to ensure that their only child is a son. There are 117 men to each
100 women in China (Goodkind, 2004). In the 1979, when the one child policy was enacted, the
intention was not to create this imbalance, but to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall this movement was successful and China s population growth decreased from 1970 to 1976
(Fitzpatrick, 2009). Eventually this decrease slowed, and leveled off, prompting the government to
take further action to slow the booming population. In 1979 a policy, known internationally as the one
child policy but more delicately called the policy of birth planning , was introduced requiring couples
from China s ethnic majority to have only one child (Cai Lavely, 2003).
While it seems somewhat reasonable for a government to encourage family planning, and to provide
the population with access to birth control, it seems a bit out of line for them to ask a family to have
only one child. The pressure of only having one child, in combination with a cultural favoritism
toward males is what makes the one child policy so gravely concerning. It is clear that the excess
female infant mortality is directly attributable to the birth control policy, which caused the pre existing
prevalence of son preference to escalate. In China, son preference is the product of ingrained social
norms. Girls and women still occupy a lower social status in society (Zilberberg, 2007). The one child
policy requires authorization for each birth children are required to be reported to receive
documentation that allows them to be part of society to attend school, to hold a job in adulthood, and

The Whiskey Rebellion and the Whiskey Tax
The Whisky Rebellion
In 1791, under President George Washington, there was a vigorous debate within the House of
Representatives to approve legislation to enact an excise tax on whiskey. They choose to pass this law
35 211 because of Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, who was the secretary of the treasury at the time,
was faced with the task of paying off the U.S. debt after the revolution. Hamilton was an avid believer
in a strong central government which requires a lot of funding. He realized there was an abundance of
alcohol circling around the U.S. at the time that was being both imported and created here that could
be taxed. Hamilton stated that there would be millions of gallons imported into New York that would
potentially give the government two hundred thousand pounds1. Hamilton particularly pushed this tax
to be passed more as a measure of social discipline than as a source of revenue .
Today, people may regard Hamilton s remark of limiting alcohol consumption to qualify him as semi
prohibitionist. However, Hamilton had a point when he spoke about social discipline and drinking.
When reviewing the health issues of excessively drinking that we currently understand in modern
times, drinking was quite a serious problem in the 18th century. At one point in time, Hamilton s
doctor limited him to consume no more than three glasses of wine per day. The fact that this doctor
considered this to be a small amount tells us a lot about societal views on alcohol in the 1700 s. It

Metaphors In A Raisin In The Sun
Lorraine Hansberry considered lines from two Hughes poems to title her play A Raisin in the Sun.
Both Poems, Mother to Son and Harlem, connect to the play, however, Mother to Son is the better one
because there is much more content talked about in this poem. The struggle the mother went through
is crazy. The fact that she isn t broken down and that she tries to support her child shows a lot. Mother
and son have some connections. They are identical in many ways, but mostly on how outspoken the
mothers are with their sons shows the connection. In the poem Mother to Son , the mom talks to her
son about how life hasn t been easy for her. She uses the metaphor, Life for me, aint been no crystal
stair in reference to her life. This connects to A raisin in the sun and how sometimes Ruth couldn t
provide all the things that she wanted to for travis. Another metaphor lena uses is And places with no
carpet on the floor
Bare. But all the time, I se been a climbin on, . This shows that sometimes lena had to live in
conditions with bare feet on the floor. It was pretty harsh and yet she survived. This connects to A
raisin in the sun, Travis would ask Ruth for money and Ruth wouldn t have the money to supply. Ruth
would feel like she is a bad mother and still tries to help. Her husband comes in and supports and this
shows that the family is still pushing even when they are in bad conditions. Another way that shows

Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization
There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its manifestation
in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013, p.2). Despite the
fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to remark that while for
determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for sociologists, inequality is
learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism sets its foundations in biology
and a binary expression of sex (male and female), and states that men and women have inherited
different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the moment people are born, they
are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities to act in the world as either a men
or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or superiority of one sex over the other (in this
case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a necessity) for our society to function properly
(Kimmel, 2013). For example, women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adding the social factor as one of the major influences in one s identity and, therefore, it is a form of
gender expression. Thus, individuals are more than the expression of their biological sex, they are part
of groups and these groups exert a great influence in their everyday decisions (Kimmel, 2013). In this
case, gender inequality is learned during the process of socialization. For instance, we tend to learn
how to act (gender roles) from the different norms in society. Supporting this idea, I noticed how at
school, boys and girls tend to be organized in two separate groups to play sports. This example is what
Kimmel (2013) explained an example of how people learn that men and women are different, and
construct in their minds the idea of gender

How Did Lolne Contribute To Lincoln s Childhood
Born as Alex Alexander Milne, A. A. Milne was born in London, England to John Vine Milne and
Sarah Maria Heginbotham Milne on January 18th, 1882 (Inventory 2). On the subject of childhood,
more specifically his, Milne states that childhood is not the happiest time of one s life, but only to a
child is pure happiness possible. Afterwards it is tainted with the knowledge that it will not last, and
the fear that one will have to pay for it (Bright 1). Milne s surroundings and upbringings lead to his
work being known and appreciated around the world. Milne does not depict much sentiment in
childhood at all, especially his (Mulder). During his adolescence, being the youngest of three boys
meant that he did not get much attention. At least in his perspective, it went mainly to his two older
brothers making him feel very neglected. Even then he still did not get much of a bond with either
parent being under the constant care of a nanny or governess. This hurt his bond with his mother the
most, he is even quoted saying that he does not feel the need for a mother like love (Bright 6 7). ...

Thermo-Chemical Storage Systems Essay
Thermochemical heat storage can be physical (sorptive) or chemical based on the material used. The
storage system which does not involve the production of new compound is called sorptive storage
while those which involve formation of new compound are called chemical storage. The successful
thermochemical storage system is sorptive storage system that works on utilizing the heat of reaction
enthalpy. Thermochemical storage has considerable benefits when compared to sensible and the latent
heat thermal energy storage systems since it is easily controllable which prevents the heat loss. The
features of sorptive heat storage technology enables the implementation on a large scale.

The features like increased storage capacity, decreased heat loss to the environment and flexibility of
heat storage over a wide range of temperatures makes the thermochemical storage system superior to
other storage systems.
The sorptive technology involves the absorption or adsorption of molecules through a reaction thereby
storing heat. This kind of sorption system results in the formation of physical bond between the
reaction pair, adsorbent (A) and adsorptive (B), which has a preferably high energy turnover. The
preferred reaction is mostly reversible in order to perform many charge and discharge cycles.
A + B ↔ AB + heat (see Figure 2) Figure 2: Schematic diagram of sorptive thermal energy storage
technology
When charging the compound, heat is applied to substance AB which dissociate into separate A and B
molecule/compound. The storage is facilitated by using certain inhibitors that control the reverse
reaction. To release heat, the A and B components are reacted by removal of inhibitors, ultimately
favoring the reaction, resulting in the formation of compound AB and releasing heat. During this
cyclic process, when the reaction between A and B is prevented, the heat which can be stored due to
chemical energy cannot be released. The adsorbent such as zeolite (see Figure 3) react with water

Juvenile Recidivism and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Juvenile Recidivism and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form) Appendix B
As part of the requirements for a degree in Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at
Buffalo, I have to conduct a research study. This research looks at the effects of Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy on recidivism rates.
Prison recidivism rates continue to be a problem in the United States. Just within the first 3 years of
release from prison, it is estimated that more than 40 percent offenders commit new crimes and are
once again incarcerated. This is an obvious sign that the implemented programs and policies to
combat recidivism are failing. This study looks at cognitive behavioral therapy, the most known ...

Introduction Since industrialization, people has been likely to pursue only economic prosperity and
social success which made them believe to feel poor mentally. There has been a fad for wellbeing for
about a decade in my country, Korea. This was for the mentally and physically healthy life. After this
realization, people has been started to recognize the need of stability in mind among those who are in
over middle class level. They believed that in the past obesity symbolized the wealth, but it is cause of
lots of diseases nowadays. This trends has been spread among most people and appeared in food area.

Cinderella Double Standards Essay
Cinderella, a classic fairy tale, is one of the oldest tales that is well known throughout the world. With
the many versions that share the same storyline and the same meaning, Cinderella has played an
important role model for many young girls. She is portrayed as a helpless young woman that is
trapped by evil and receives help to find her Prince Charming. Many young girls in societies of third
world countries desire to live a similar fantasy. Cinderella s story goes beyond becoming a princess
and finding true love, however. The history of the fairytale and the portrayal of the character reveals
the significance of women s role in society and femininity.
In similarity to other fairy tales, having a happy ending is always desired, but the characters ... Show

Cinderella wouldn t have had the opportunity to attend the ball if it weren t for the dress she viewed as
perfect and the fact that she looked presentable. This can serve as an example of double standards
because men usually escape with the way they perceive or represent themselves physically, meanwhile
women have to try twice as hard to look presentable. This brings to attention that looks play a big role
when grabbing the attention of men. It shows to young girls that not unless you are adequately dressed
or have what society defines as beautiful then you won t get far in life. For example, at the ball the
Prince rejects every girl that invite him to dance, until he sees Cinderella. Both the Prince and
Cinderella had a fast and real connection, but that vanishes when Cinderella remembers that she had a
designated curfew. The following days of the ball, the prince goes in search for Cinderella after she
left her glass slipper behind. The glass slipper is the only item he has of her along with the connection
the experienced. The Prince going after after Cinderella can also serve as an example of society. He
went looking after her which now we could also see this in society. Men are usually the ones to chase
after women. They are the ones looking for their target, making women look foolish, superficial, and

Health Care Utilization
The Affordable Care Act was signed into law March 23, 2010 by President Barack Obama; however,
the constitutionality of the law remained in question. In a controversial 5 to 4 ruling, The U.S.
Supreme Court upheld the law on June 28, 2012. The ACA is thought by some as the United States
health care rescue, and as its downfall by others.
It is estimated that the ACA will provide new services to 64 million Americans, providing health care
coverage to 32 million previously uninsured. In addition to providing new health insurance coverage,
the ACA implemented several components that can expand access to health care. One policy ... Show

The aim of the ACA is to provide affordable health care to all Americans, but it still leaves some
issues unaddressed that will impact the access to health care. Covino (n.d.), Though the intentions of
the legislation are good, the Affordable Care Act does little to improve the actual health care delivery
system (para.1, page 2). According to the American Medical Association, we are facing an increasing
Physician shortage. As of 2010 we faced a shortfall of 13,700 physicians, the estimate is that number
will increase to 62,900 by 2015, 91,500 by 2020, and 130,600 by 2025 (Krupa, n.d.), with primary
care taking the largest impact. Health Care coverage will be of no benefit if there are no doctors to
treat the patients. An example of this occurred in 2002 when Thailand s 30 Bhat Scheme added (CNN
n.d.) 14 million people to the country s health care system, resulting in long waits and subpar service
(Your health is covered, but who is going to treat you?) Several factors contribute to the physician
shortage. Many physicians are reaching the age of retirement, the Association of American Medical
Colleges estimates nearly 15 million physicians will be eligible for Medicare in the coming years
(CNN n.d.). The increasing cost of malpractice insurance also deters many from pursuing a career in
medicine, and is forcing some doctors to retire. Also contributing to the physician shortage is a lack of
spots in residency programs. In 2011, more than 7,000 were left

Positive Effects Of Star Wars
The effects of Star Wars
BLAM! KACHEW! Help me Obiwon you re my only hope. The popular franchise known
as Star Wars has been very successful and has been going on for decades. Even today they
are rolling out with a new trilogy of Star Wars movies while we still watch the old classics like
Return of The Jedi or A New Hope. But there is one question that people have been asking;
How could Star Wars influence what people do? Hundreds to thousands of people have asked
this. New ideas for companies, weapons, and new technology have been based on Star Wars.
There have been Star Wars products, like toys or apps and many other profitable companies
based around Star Wars as well as new pop and culture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of these movies and TV shows became very rewarding and profitable.
Furthermore, Star Wars has been a good inspiration for other movie and TV show successes.
A second idea from Charles Q. Choi, Space.com (August 10, 2010) claims that Star Wars
has given people the idea of new Star Wars based technology. He states that the AT AT and
AT ST walkers (which are large mechanical vehicles that move on huge metal legs) that are
seen in episodes 5 and 6, helped the inspiration of the invention of robots that move on their
own legs. They were a new step in human technology and could lead to other robots and ideas.
Based on this, Space.com states that Star Wars has helped people gain the idea of new robots
and technology.
Another detail from Anobi Bot in Wikipedia says that Star Wars has revolutionized our way
of making movies. He claims that in the old way of making fantasy movies it was usually a
deep emotional movie or a love story. When the first Star Wars trilogy rolled into the theaters,
Movies suddenly turned from emotional to powerful conflict stories. Then more movies

  • 2. Historical Perspectives On The Colonial Revival In... Whatever is new, Is bad : Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of American culture from the 1870s to its peak between 1880 and 1940. The Colonial Revival was more about ideology, but most often manifested itself through decorative arts and architecture. Elements of pseudo colonial furniture, arts and architecture symbolically served as tools to promote the republican ideas of democracy, patriotism and moral superiority. In many ways the Colonial Revival was a direct reaction to the side effects of Industrialization and progress. Ironically, frequently participants of the revival used modern techniques as a means to accomplish their singular goal. Historian Alan Axelrod argues, Colonialism is not a surface phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life, but a network of communications and linkages that reach deep into American experience and behavior. Historians examine the movement from various perspectives; the Colonial Revival as a social and cultural movement, its representation in U.S. material culture, and its significance to immigration and nationalism. Scholarship includes everything from Alan Axelrod s The Colonial Revival in America from 1985 to Briann G. Greenfield s Out of the Attic: Antiques in Twentieth Century New England from 2009. A variety of monographs and collections of essays will be analyzed to determine correlations and points of dissent within the historiography of the Colonial Revival in the United States. The Colonial Revival has also been a popular area of examination in the museum

More specifically, I observed the effect of temperature on the common soil bacteria Serratia marcescens. S. marcescens can appear either red, pink, white, or colorless due to the presence, or the lack, of several specific enzymes within the bacteria that cause the production of the red pigment known as prodigiosin. After mixing the two, I placed the mixture in a small test tube and placed that in the microwave to bring it to a boil. After about 30 seconds in the microwave, I noticed that the test tube s rubber stop, which was placed there to prevent the water from evaporating in the microwave, had completely popped off. I cleaned up the mess in the microwave and made the nutrient agar mixture again; however, this time I placed the mixture in a larger beaker and covered it with the top of a sterile petri dish similarly to how I had previously boiled Mr. Goble s Erlenmeyer flask of agar. Again, after 30 seconds in the microwave, the petri dish lid had come off of the beaker and the mixture had boiled over and onto the microwave. I cleaned the microwave for the second time that day and decided that I needed an even larger container to boil the mixture in, as it seemed the boiling water had nowhere to go in my previous efforts and forced the ejection of each lid. After realizing that the largest flask I was in possession of was the large Erlenmeyer from Mr. Goble, I decided to clean it out quickly (as there was still some remaining nutrient agar in the bottom of it) and make my own nutrient agar for the third time and use the large flask to boil it in. After the third time, my efforts to boil my own nutrient agar proved successful and I poured about 15 mL of the liquid agar into two petri dishes; one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many civilians were kidnapped and later killed. Those were big concepts happening during the films and that was done great by the director Juan José Campanella. The disappearance and assassination of both Argentines and Chileans made these films similar. The Secret in Their Eyes(2009) is a film written by Eduardo Sacheri and the director Juan José Campanella. The film was released in August 13, 2009. They are also very respectful boys, they would help me carry my desk over next to the teacher and they would help me pass out textbooks and they would always say please and excuse me. Obviously this topic was too broad a subject for me to research into with any depth so I began researching into the area which would most interest me. The result was the issue of gender within learning. I came to this conclusion after finding an interesting article on same sex classes, Can Single sex Classes in Co educational Schools Enhance the Learning Experiences of Girls and/or Boys? An Exploration of Pupils Perceptions by Carolyn Jackson. She talks about an experiment with pupils within a year 7 class, where they are put into single sex classes for mathematics and are assessed by their test results as well as being interviewed about their opinion and confidence. This idea instantly grabbed my attention. Therefore I have decided to start my assignment by discussing how gender affects the learning of mathematics, focussing on secondary school mathematics, and then continue to analyse whether using same sex classes could be a useful adjustment in today s secondary schools. As a mathematician myself I have gone through the educational system and seen the uneven proportion of boys to girls within mathematics classrooms. As soon as mathematics became ... The MILS model is broken down into four components: A Separation Kernel, Middleware, Applications and a Partitioning Communications System. According to Objective Interface Systems, the Application Layer is responsible for enforcing application layer security policies (2015). These security polies can include encryption protection firewalls, and/or IDS settings. This layer is located on top of the middle layer. This layer is unique as the applications security can be evaluated on its own aside from the security of the entire system (Xining Yameng, 2012). The forth component of the system is the Partitioning Communication System (PCS). This component works in conjunction with the Middleware Layer and controls the interaction between the different MILS sections. The PCS provides end to end protection to the sections on the network not directly connected to the MILS. It assists with security for the information flow, data isolation. • 12. A Sand County Almanac Summary Fall is a time of change. The leaves change from green to brilliant shades of brown, red and yellow. The seasons begin to change from the dog days of summer to the cool stillness of winter. Fall is my favorite time of the year. When asked to choose just one chapter from A Sand County Almanac, my first idea was to look in the section about the fall. When reading the chapters about Fall, the one that struck a chord was the chapter about October. I chose this section because it really seemed to paint a picture that reminded me of what the fall is like. In Smoky Gold , the writer discusses hunting for birds. This is defiantly something that I associate with the month of October. In Too Early, the author discusses what a person who chooses to go out into the wild before dawn can witness. In Red Lanterns, the author discusses a pheasant hunt. All of these readings give a feeling of fall. They reflect the month for which they were entitled and they help to paint a picture of what I believe fall is. That is why I chose to write about this specific section of A Sand County Almanac. The first section of this chapter is called Smoky Gold. In this section of the chapter, the writer discusses grouse hunting. He states that few people are aware of the grouse population in Adams County. He goes on to say that most hunters speed on through to the counties farther north. He smiles as he sits in the tamaracks and listens to sounds of these other hunters speeding by. The point he is trying to make here is that there can be beauty in many places; you just have to take the time to slow down and experience this beauty. The hunters that speed by are on their way to hunt in another place. This is most likely a place they have been before. They are used to doing things the same way and they do not take the time to try anything new. If they would slow down, they may come to discover that what they are looking for can be found in Adams County. Section two is called Too Early. In this section of the chapter, the author discusses the beauties that can be seen by people and animals that get up before the sunrise. The author describes showing up at the marsh too early for the sun was really a lesson in listening. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Judith Plaskow Research Paper Judith Plaskow Judith Plaskow began her study of feminism while pursuing a Phd at Yale and continued on to cofound B not Esh, a Jewish feminist spirituality collective, as well as author many theological books (Braude, 2004, pg 219). She grew up in a Reform Judaism household and as a child focused on ethical monotheism , which lead to her study of the Holocaust and the development of a self image of victimhood (2004, pg 220). It was Naomi Weisstein, a psychologist, who spoke to Plaskow women s group at Yale that really spurred her to reconsider her own ambitions in life (2004, pg 221). In her discovery of feminism, Plaskow felt that she was able to move past her self identity as a victim and began to examine how her womanhood and Jewishness could contribute to the world (2004, pg 222). Using this method on human brain image we experiment the result that the number of iteration steps for the threshold T is reduced. Using this method over segmentation and discontinuities also can be avoided. Finally proposed a new method using both Thresholding image segmentation and edge detection segmentation algorithm based on the Proportion of Foreground to Background. After this the basic principal is define in this paper. Proportion of Foreground to Background Algorithm combine the traditional iterative algorithm. Anita Khanna, Dr. Manish Shrivastva(2012) In their paper they used unsupervised technique of segmentation which is simple and give satisfactory result. We use Ultrasound (US) images and apply unsupervised segmentation technique. There is a problem to segment Ultrasound image because of low contrast and high speckle noise. In this paper we use different unsupervised technique like Thresholding; k means cluster technique and expectation maximization and compare all the result. Ultrasound images are texture feature image and expectation maximization (EM) technique gives best result of segmentation. In texture features images ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The company received an investment from Mark Markkula in 1977, introducing Apple Computer Inc. and the release of the Apple II. The Apple III and Apple IIe were then released. The Apple III was a high end machine that was highly priced, whereas the Apple IIe was a computer used in various households. In 1980, Apple became a public company which increased their share price significantly, making most of Apple s staff members millionaires. By 1983, Apple became a Fortune 500 company as a result of their rapid growth (Alcom, 2012). In the early 1980 s, Apple encountered heavy competition from IBM which sold millions of PCs. Competition continued throughout the years with Microsoft releasing software such as Word and BASIC. The original Macintosh was released in 1984, known as the computer for the rest of us , while the Apple IIe simultaneously received awards for excellence (Alcom, 2012). Apple filed a lawsuit against Steve Jobs after he resigned due to political issues within the company. Jobs claimed he would start a new company so Apple filed a lawsuit to stop him from using sensitive information to be in competition with Apple. • 23. The Consequences Of Space Travel And Exploration 1. Space travel and exploration have many benefits, however, there are also some possible consequences. Space travel is worth it for many reasons. Just like the ocean; space is infinite and there is another world to discover so to speak. There are so many things that we don t know about the ocean and space. For one, space is a mystery containing several artifacts, entities, and possible species that could have the ability to open doors to a whole new universe. There could potentially be life on another planet or even a planet similar to earth that can support life. However, mankind will never know unless we opt to explore the kingdom of space. 2. Reasons why some naysayers believe there shouldn t be more space travel is the cost. It costs $500 $700 million every time a space shuttle flies. Additionally, it costs space tourists $20 million to fly to the space station. Some will ask why spend money on space exploration when there are so many other things that should take precedence. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was built in 1978 which cost $12 billion to build it. The Galileo which is Europe s GPS has an estimated cost of $6.3 billion. The Apollo Space Program started in 1961 1972, and the total cost of the program was $109 billion. As you can see, space travel is extremely expensive. In addition to the costs of the programs and the shuttles, is the salary that is paid to the Astronauts. In 1969 Neil Armstrong was paid $20,000 for his trip to space. In 2012 Astronauts were paid $125,000 for their trip to space so the cost has increased immensely. 3. Another possible reason that people don t agree with space exploration is that if there are alien lifeforms, there might be a chance that they will try to harm the human species. The famed physicist Stephen Hawking is one who believes this to be the case. This is what he had to say on the topic: Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they could reach. This statement was mentioned in 2010 on an episode of Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking. He also stated that Alien civilization would have no problem wiping out the human race the way a human might wipe out a colony of ants. We ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When this war started, both sides had reason to believe that they would win, but both were surprised that the war was going to be longer and much more difficult than expected. After this long and difficult war, it is safe to be said that the turning points and advantages that helped the Union win this war were the resource ratio advantage, the population differential advantage, the battle of Gettysburg, Emancipation Proclamation, and Sherman s March. The battle of Gettysburg was memorable because this all changed. During this battle the South for the first time went on the offensive to try and push the North further back into their territory and attacked them. The two sides battled for three days until the North gained the upper hand and won the battle. Document 6 says this about the end of the battle, The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, sometimes referred to as the High Water Mark of the Rebellion resulted not only in Lee s retreat for Virginia, but an end to the hopes of the confederate states of America for independence (Document 6). This quote is explaining the fact that the Lee and his army was not going to be able to force the North back so they were eventually doomed. Without the force to push the enemy back you are going to be overrun so this was a turning point in the war when this was realized. This may be seen as a turning point in the war which it is, but it can also be considered an advantage. As the third largest European power by area, the Empire was a powerful presence leading up to World War I, with a population of over fifty million people and an army of 400,000 soldiers. The conflicts among European powers and the disorder in the Balkans in the 19th and 20th centuries led to a situation in which Franz Ferdinand s assassination proved to be the tipping point in the fragile relationship between Austria Hungary and the South Slav nationalities that threatened the Empire both internally and externally. His death caused a costly war in terms of both lives and the economy in the South Slav region and further undermined the stability of Serbia. Princip assassinated the heir to the throne in an attempt to spark a revolution that would result in Slavic independence from Austria Hungary. However, before his death, Franz Ferdinand supported economic development for Slavs within the Austro Hungarian Empire and favored more equal measures toward the South Slav nationalities. When one thinks of China it is common to conjure up images of rice fields and of the great wall, but also of crowded cities teeming with people and bicycles and cars. One rarely thinks of a nation populated mostly by men and boys, with a noticeable yet surreal absence of women. While this is a bit of an exaggeration, it has been noted over the past several decades that there is an alarmingly imbalanced sex ratio. The policy has clearly contributed to the nation s unnatural gender imbalance, as couples use legal and illegal means to ensure that their only child is a son. Eventually this decrease slowed, and leveled off, prompting the government to take further action to slow the booming population. In 1979 a policy, known internationally as the one child policy but more delicately called the policy of birth planning , was introduced requiring couples from China s ethnic majority to have only one child (Cai Lavely, 2003). While it seems somewhat reasonable for a government to encourage family planning, and to provide the population with access to birth control, it seems a bit out of line for them to ask a family to have only one child. The pressure of only having one child, in combination with a cultural favoritism toward males is what makes the one child policy so gravely concerning. It is clear that the excess female infant mortality is directly attributable to the birth control policy, which caused the pre existing prevalence of son preference to escalate. In China, son preference is the product of ingrained social norms. Girls and women still occupy a lower social status in society (Zilberberg, 2007). The Whiskey Rebellion and the Whiskey Tax The Whisky Rebellion In 1791, under President George Washington, there was a vigorous debate within the House of Representatives to approve legislation to enact an excise tax on whiskey. They choose to pass this law 35 211 because of Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, who was the secretary of the treasury at the time, was faced with the task of paying off the U.S. debt after the revolution. Hamilton was an avid believer in a strong central government which requires a lot of funding. He realized there was an abundance of alcohol circling around the U.S. at the time that was being both imported and created here that could be taxed. Hamilton stated that there would be millions of gallons imported into New York that would potentially give the government two hundred thousand pounds1. Hamilton particularly pushed this tax to be passed more as a measure of social discipline than as a source of revenue . Today, people may regard Hamilton s remark of limiting alcohol consumption to qualify him as semi prohibitionist. However, Hamilton had a point when he spoke about social discipline and drinking. When reviewing the health issues of excessively drinking that we currently understand in modern times, drinking was quite a serious problem in the 18th century. At one point in time, Hamilton s doctor limited him to consume no more than three glasses of wine per day. • 38. Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its manifestation in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013, p.2). Despite the fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to remark that while for determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for sociologists, inequality is learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism sets its foundations in biology and a binary expression of sex (male and female), and states that men and women have inherited different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the moment people are born, they are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities to act in the world as either a men or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or superiority of one sex over the other (in this case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a necessity) for our society to function properly (Kimmel, 2013). The features of sorptive heat storage technology enables the implementation on a large scale. Firstly, charging process of the thermochemical storage method ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The features like increased storage capacity, decreased heat loss to the environment and flexibility of heat storage over a wide range of temperatures makes the thermochemical storage system superior to other storage systems. The sorptive technology involves the absorption or adsorption of molecules through a reaction thereby storing heat. This kind of sorption system results in the formation of physical bond between the reaction pair, adsorbent (A) and adsorptive (B), which has a preferably high energy turnover. The preferred reaction is mostly reversible in order to perform many charge and discharge cycles. A + B ↔ AB + heat (see Figure 2) Figure 2: Schematic diagram of sorptive thermal energy storage technology When charging the compound, heat is applied to substance AB which dissociate into separate A and B molecule/compound. The storage is facilitated by using certain inhibitors that control the reverse reaction. To release heat, the A and B components are reacted by removal of inhibitors, ultimately favoring the reaction, resulting in the formation of compound AB and releasing heat. During this cyclic process, when the reaction between A and B is prevented, the heat which can be stored due to chemical energy cannot be released. The adsorbent such as zeolite (see Figure 3) react with water thereby act as a sorptive storage material where adsorption of water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Juvenile Recidivism and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Juvenile Recidivism and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form) Appendix B As part of the requirements for a degree in Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at Buffalo, I have to conduct a research study. This research looks at the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on recidivism rates. Prison recidivism rates continue to be a problem in the United States. Just within the first 3 years of release from prison, it is estimated that more than 40 percent offenders commit new crimes and are once again incarcerated. This is an obvious sign that the implemented programs and policies to combat recidivism are failing. This study looks at cognitive behavioral therapy, the most known ... There has been a fad for wellbeing for about a decade in my country, Korea. This was for the mentally and physically healthy life. After this realization, people has been started to recognize the need of stability in mind among those who are in over middle class level. They believed that in the past obesity symbolized the wealth, but it is cause of lots of diseases nowadays. This trends has been spread among most people and appeared in food area. • 44. Cinderella Double Standards Essay Cinderella, a classic fairy tale, is one of the oldest tales that is well known throughout the world. With the many versions that share the same storyline and the same meaning, Cinderella has played an important role model for many young girls. She is portrayed as a helpless young woman that is trapped by evil and receives help to find her Prince Charming. Many young girls in societies of third world countries desire to live a similar fantasy. Cinderella s story goes beyond becoming a princess and finding true love, however. The history of the fairytale and the portrayal of the character reveals the significance of women s role in society and femininity. In similarity to other fairy tales, having a happy ending is always desired, but the characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cinderella wouldn t have had the opportunity to attend the ball if it weren t for the dress she viewed as perfect and the fact that she looked presentable. This can serve as an example of double standards because men usually escape with the way they perceive or represent themselves physically, meanwhile women have to try twice as hard to look presentable. This brings to attention that looks play a big role when grabbing the attention of men. It shows to young girls that not unless you are adequately dressed or have what society defines as beautiful then you won t get far in life. For example, at the ball the Prince rejects every girl that invite him to dance, until he sees Cinderella. Both the Prince and Cinderella had a fast and real connection, but that vanishes when Cinderella remembers that she had a designated curfew. The following days of the ball, the prince goes in search for Cinderella after she left her glass slipper behind. The glass slipper is the only item he has of her along with the connection the experienced. The Prince going after after Cinderella can also serve as an example of society. He went looking after her which now we could also see this in society. Men are usually the ones to chase after women. They are the ones looking for their target, making women look foolish, superficial, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hcs 235 Health Care Utilization Paper Health Care Utilization HCS235 Health Care Utilization HCS 235 October 30, 2012 Health Care Utilization The Affordable Care Act was signed into law March 23, 2010 by President Barack Obama; however, the constitutionality of the law remained in question. In a controversial 5 to 4 ruling, The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law on June 28, 2012. The ACA is thought by some as the United States health care rescue, and as its downfall by others. It is estimated that the ACA will provide new services to 64 million Americans, providing health care coverage to 32 million previously uninsured. In addition to providing new health insurance coverage, the ACA implemented several components that can expand access to health care. One policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The aim of the ACA is to provide affordable health care to all Americans, but it still leaves some issues unaddressed that will impact the access to health care. Covino (n.d.), Though the intentions of the legislation are good, the Affordable Care Act does little to improve the actual health care delivery system (para.1, page 2). According to the American Medical Association, we are facing an increasing Physician shortage. As of 2010 we faced a shortfall of 13,700 physicians, the estimate is that number will increase to 62,900 by 2015, 91,500 by 2020, and 130,600 by 2025 (Krupa, n.d.), with primary care taking the largest impact. Health Care coverage will be of no benefit if there are no doctors to treat the patients. An example of this occurred in 2002 when Thailand s 30 Bhat Scheme added (CNN n.d.) 14 million people to the country s health care system, resulting in long waits and subpar service (Your health is covered, but who is going to treat you?) Several factors contribute to the physician shortage. Many physicians are reaching the age of retirement, the Association of American Medical Colleges estimates nearly 15 million physicians will be eligible for Medicare in the coming years (CNN n.d.). The increasing cost of malpractice insurance also deters many from pursuing a career in medicine, and is forcing some doctors to retire. Also contributing to the physician shortage is a lack of spots in residency programs. In 2011, more than 7,000 were left ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All of these movies and TV shows became very rewarding and profitable. Furthermore, Star Wars has been a good inspiration for other movie and TV show successes. A second idea from Charles Q. Choi, Space.com (August 10, 2010) claims that Star Wars has given people the idea of new Star Wars based technology. He states that the AT AT and AT ST walkers (which are large mechanical vehicles that move on huge metal legs) that are seen in episodes 5 and 6, helped the inspiration of the invention of robots that move on their own legs. They were a new step in human technology and could lead to other robots and ideas. Based on this, Space.com states that Star Wars has helped people gain the idea of new robots and technology.
