Purpose: To analyze the influence of various surgical factors on the post operative corneal refractive
power and astigmatism after keratoplasty in eyes with corneal diseases.
Methods: Retrospective study of 100 eyes with clear grafts six months following keratoplasty, the
influence of different surgical factors (technique of keratoplasty, type of suturing, size of trephination)
on the post operative corneal refractive power and astigmatism was analyzed. All included patients
signed an informed consent.
Results: Around 70% of the cases of the four subgroups had keratoconus. The flattest 6 months
postoperative keratometric readings was the penetrating keratoplasty (PK) with interrupted sutures
subgroup with mean 43.90 + 3.09 D. The steepest was the deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK)
with double running sutures subgroup with mean 45.30 + 1.70 D. The highest 6 months postoperative
astigmatism was the PK with interrupted sutures subgroup with mean 7.15 + 1.95 D. The lowest was
the PK with double running sutures subgroup with mean 2.36 + 1.15 D.
Conclusion: Interrupted sutures resulted in significantly higher postoperative astigmatism in both PK
and DALK before suture removal.

of a leader. This definition, however, matches up with the example set by Marcus Aurelius and Plato s
ideal. Looking at all three of these ideal leaders presented by Plato, Marcus Aurelius, and Machiavelli
it is easy to draw what it is that makes a good leader. Although a lot of the ideas expressed by these
three men differentiate in many ways, they overlap in key places. An example is Marcus Aurelius

When a massive star, outclassing our own sun by fiat, grows old enough that it s run out of fuel, it
sometimes explodes in a violent reaction releasing the elements necessary for new stars, new planets
and systems into the depths of space in a matter of minutes. This process is believed to resemble the
big bang itself, and astronomers have just discovered the presence of a chemical called lithium in a
nova, and this chemical s presence is helping us understand the concentration of lithium in stellar

resting on the rolling mountains of Chile, and quickly pinpointed and identified as Nova Centauri, a

Human history has bared witness to more tyrants than it could hope to enumerate. Whether it be
despotic monarchs, autocratic dictators, or megalomaniac celebrities, countless figures in positions of
power have perpetuated Lord Acton s famous axiom, Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power
corrupts absolutely. (Acton, 1906; Figgis Laurence, 1906). However, is Acton s aphorism scientifically
valid, or is it purely anecdotal? Moreover, is it actually power that causes corruption or are the corrupt
attracted to power? These are questions that the scientific community has long sought to answer.
Acton s doctrine has inspired a wide array of experimental studies, most of which utilize random
manipulations of power in order to analyze how it alters behaviour. The limiting factor in these
procedures is the inability to control extraneous variables such as pre existing inclinations to corrupt
behaviour. In order to determine causation rather than just correlation between power and corruption,
researchers realized that in addition to manipulating power exogenously they needed to conduct tests
that gauged inclinations to corrupt behaviour or lack there of. Many studies have also measured the
hormone profiles of participants to see if these profiles had any significant impact on results. Once
these base assessments were analyzed, researchers were able to recognize which participants had
