Classical conditioning states that learning is a gradual process, that it is not possible for a
subject to be classically condition in only one trial. However, if you eat something and become
sick from it, there is a very good probability that you will develop a strong distaste for that food.
This effect is known as taste aversion, which has brought up many questions about classical
conditioning.
It was Garcia and Koelling (1966) who studied the level of conditioning in rats using two
conditioned stimulus (CS), an audiovisual stimulus and a salty flavor added to drinking water. The
two unconditioned stimulus (UCS), a mild foot shock and a nausea producing drug. In the

It is seen that the rats promptly learned to associate a taste CS with a UCS of nausea but not with
the foot shock, where the audiovisual CS was conditioned to the foot shock but not to nausea
(Walker 1995).
Taste aversion has violated three principles of classical conditioning, the first is that equal
associability of stimuli: any CS can be paired with any UCS. This has proven to be untrue
because if it were, the rats that became sick would have avoided both the salty water CS and the
audiovisual CS. The second principle violated is temporal contiguity: CS and UCS have to be
presented close together in time. Again untrue in this case because of such a long delay between
drinking the salty water and becoming sick. The third and final principle is that learning is gradual,
but in this case only one trial was enough.
The studies done by Garcia and Koelling have had much support from many other experiments
done in similar or the same situations. A study of ingestional aversion (Gregg, Melanie, Kittrell,
Domjan Amsel, 1978), where 12 and 15 day old rats were conditioned by infusing a .5% solution
of saccharin into the oral cavity. This was then followed by an oral infusion by the injection of

of biggest companies in the united states, it had a lot of assets all over the country and was
operating on a lot of profit that nobody knew how and why. The movie, Enron, The smartest guy in
the room shows that the company was cooking their books making it look like the company was
making a lot of profit. The movie starts by introducing the big scandalous bosses of Enron,
Chairman Kenneth Lay, CEO Jeff Skilling and CFO Andrew Fastow. The narrator describes the
company as a cooperation that is greedy and fraudulent and later turns bankrupt. We are showed
that top executives of Enron held their own personal accounts and transferred a millions of dollars
all the time. Their traders were doing scandalous things by fixing the market so the people would
invest in the company. Instead of fixing this, Ken Lay is shown in the documentary sending an
email to his traders saying they should keep making the millions for the company. After one of the
traders was arrested, Ken Lay needed someone that would continue making money for the

At first, I thought the formatting of the book was a little bizarre, but as I delved deeper into the
story, I grew to appreciate the setup of the book and how it showed the eight different
perspectives of each of the girls. It really lets you see all the different dimensions and
perspectives of what it really meant to be the prettiest or ugliest of each grade. This was great, as
it let you see how some girls chose to embrace their label with open arms and how some didn t let
the labels define them. On the other hand, I loved all the characters, but one character that really
fascinated me was Bridget Honeycutt. She had me hooked on her story, from her starving
herself all summer to her finally learning her lesson. Bridget had gone through a lot and the
chapters she had been in had really tugged my heartstrings. I could nearly see the turmoil and
eruption of her feelings unfold right in front of me, with Vivian s detailed writing. Not only that
but Vivian address important issues that still go on to this day with teenage girls; popularity,
dating, eating disorders, family issues, and insecurities. Throughout the book, you get to see that
not only does being labeled as ugliest have its problems, but being labeled as prettiest does as
well. Each of the girls has to go through their own problem alone, and this story truly shows how
much of a struggle it is for the girls.
