Technology Me I think it goes without saying, but technology has fundamentally changed our world.
It has not only altered human communication, but has created a new form of communication as well.
Becoming more and more apparent in modern life is the fact that we are communicating with
technology itself in a multitude of different ways. The new, complicated relationship between
individual humans and elements of technology has been an emerging topic for many communications
theorists. In this essay, I will be taking two well held theories dealing with communication between
humans and technology, and then applying it to experiences I have had in my life.
The Theories The first theory is Media Equation Theory. In its simplest definition, the theory states
that humans interact with technology and media as if they were a human. Meaning, many of the
features of human communication are replicated in this new form of interaction. The theory was
developed by Bryon Reeves and Clifford Nass in the 1990s and has continued to gain prominence
with increased technological pervasiveness. Reeves and Nass found that humans attribute existing
social roles to this new media. Furthermore, we can view individual pieces and forms of technology as
either positive or negative. Based on our past experiences, new media can act as a friend, an adversary,

illustrates the difficult relationship Amir and his father have with each other because Baba wants to

One can often identify a person s political, religious or cultural orientation by his or her reaction to
certain words. A case in point is the expression secular humanism. For religious conservatives those
words sum up much of what is wrong with contemporary society.
