[HERBAL COSMETICS ]
The use of medicinal plants is old as the existence of mankind. According to World
Health Organization (WHO) data, about 80% of world populations are using
products based on medicinal herbs. Phytotherapy is based on the use of herbal
drugs and medicinal products for the purpose of prevention and treatment.
Rational phytotherapy is a modern concept of herbal medicines using, which are
made of standardized herbal extracts.

INTRODUCTION:
The word cosmetic was acquire from the Greek word “kosm tikos” meaning
having the power, order, skill in decorating. Herbal Cosmetics, here referred as
Products, are formulated, using various permissible cosmetic ingredients to form
the base in which one or more herbal ingredients are used to provide defined
cosmetic advantages only, shall be called as "Herbal Cosmetics". Beginning 1990's
cosmetic manufacturer redesign a term 'cosmeceuticals' to describe the OTC skin
care products that claims therapeutic benefit by addition of plant based active
ingredient such as alpha-hydroxy acid, retinoic acid, ascorbic acid and coenzyme.
These active ingredients serves many purposes viz. increase in skin elasticity,
delay in skin aging by reducing the wrinkles, protection against UV radiation by
antioxidant property and to check degradation of collagen respectively.
Definition of Herbal Cosmetics:
These are the cosmetics which are prepared using plant products having
cosmetic actions. Recently the uses of botanicals in cosmetics have increased
mainly due to the mild action and non-toxic nature. In cosmetics, both natural
and phyto-ingredients are used. Natural products Include oils, extracts, secretions
etc. Phyto-ingredients include pure constituents obtained by various processes.

Herbal Extracts for Cosmetics:
Herbal extracts as the name suggests, is the extract of herbs. Herbal extracts are
an ancient methodology as its references have been discovered in holy Vedas and
In unani. Herbals extracts are processed for curing several remedies and serve
other health prospective. In the extraction process, the herbs are smashed in a
bowl to squeeze out the juice. Later the liquefied juice is mixed with essential
substances to prepare the herbal extracts.

Source and Description of Herbals Materials
Indian Extracts for Herbal Cosmetics:
Herbs assume a significant role, especially in present day times, when the
harming effects of food processing and overmedication have accepted alarming
proportions. They are currently being progressively cosmetics, foods and teas, as
well as alternative medicines.
i) Alma (Embilica officinalis): Amla grows throughout India and the name
given to the fruit of a small leafy tree (Embilica Officinalis). This fruit have a high
content of vitamin C which is extracted from its seeds it is used as a treatment for
hair and scalp problem.
ii) Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): It can be used as a face pack to improve facial
complexion, as a hair application to make hair shiny, also removes dandruff and
lice in hair.

iii) Shikaka (Acasia cancina): It is a small shrub-like tree, which grows in the
warm, dry plains of central India. It helps in removing dandruff and lice & very
effective in removing oil and dirt from hair.
iv) Neem (Azadirachata indica): "Sarva Roga Nivarini - the curer of all
ailments" Neem's role as a wonder drug is stressed as far back as 4500 years ago.
Some of its health benefits include immunity booster, effective in skin infection,
blood purifier etc.
v) Reetha Powder (Soap nut): It is used in India as a natural hair and body
cleanser.

vi) Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum): Holy basil, called Tulsi in India, is ubiquitous in
Hindu tradition. Its role has a healing herb, antiviral and also in treating many
disorder.
vii) Ghritkumar (Aloe vera): It is used for pain relief and healing of
'hemorrhoids, applied externally and internally it is also used for sunburn, scratch
and a cleansing purge for the body or skin. It is an aid to growing new tissue and
alleviating the advance of skin cancer caused by the sun.
viii) Multani Mitts (Fullers Earth): It is Mother Nature's own baby powder. It
is useful in removing pimple marks, treating sunburn; helps unclog pores, to
cleanse the skin of flakes and dirt.

Xi) Chicory (Cichorium intybus): Chicory, Cichorium intybus, is somewhat
woody, perennial herbaceous plant usually with bright blue flowers, rarely white
or pink. Chicory continues to be a popular herbal remedy due to its healing effects
on several ailments. Chicory is taken internally for loss of appetite, jaundice,
gallstones, gout and rheumatism. In addition, the leaves of chicory may also be
used as compresses to be applied externally to ease skin inflammations and
swellings.

ADVANTAGES:
 They do not provoke allergic reaction & do not have negative side effects.
 They are easily incorporated with skin and hair.
 With small quantity they are very effective as compared to synthetic

appropriate pharmacological effects.
 Easily available & found in large variety & quantity.
 Easy to manufactures and chief in cost.
DISADVANTAGES:
 Herbal drugs have slower effects as compare to Allopathic dosage form
Also it requires long term therapy.
 They are difficult to hide taste and odor.
 Most of the herbal drugs are not easily available.
 Manufacturing process is time consuming and complicated.
 No pharmacopoeia defines any specific procedure or ingredients to be

Antioxidants
Tamarind: Tamarind or Tamarindus indica L. of the Fabaceae, subfamily
Caesalpinioideae consists of amino acids, fatty acids and minerals of tamarind
plant parts. The most distinguished characteristic of tamarind is its sweet acidic
taste due to tartaric acid. Besides being a rich source of sugars, tamarind fruit is
also an excellent source of vitamin B and contain minerals, exhibit high
antioxidant capacity that appear to be associated with a high phenolic content,
and thus can be an important food source.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is necessary for the hydroxylation of proline, procollagen,
and lysine. Vitamin C improves the changes caused by photo damage. Vitamin C
has been used effectively to stimulate collagen repair, thus removing some of the
effects of photo-aging on skin.

Vitamin E: (Alpha-tocopherol) is the major lipophilic antioxidant in plasma
membranes and tissues. The term vitamin E collectively refers to 30 naturally
occurring molecules (4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols), all of which exhibit
vitamin E activity. Its major role is generally considered to be the arrest of chain
propagation and lipid peroxidationby scavenging lipid peroxyl radicals, hence
protecting the cell membrane from destruction.
Herbals cosmetics for skin care
Coconut oil: It is produced by crushing copra, the dried kernel, which contains
about 60-65% of the oil. Coconut oil contains a high amount of glycerides of lower
chain fatty acids. Coconut oil is derived from the fruit or seed of the coconut palm
tree Cocos nucifera, family Arecaceae. The melting point of coconut oil is 24 to
25°C (75-76ºF) and thus can be used easily in liquid or solid forms and is often
used in cooking and baking. Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturizer and
softener.

Sunflower oil: It is the non-volatile oil extracted from sunflower seeds
obtained from Helianthus annuus, family Asteraceae. Sunflower oil contains
lecithin, tocopherols, carotenoids and waxes. It has smoothing properties and is
considered non-comedogenic [4]. A simple yet cost-effective oil, well tried and
tested for generations in a wide variety of emulsions formulated for face and
body Products.
Jojoba oil: It is a mixture of long chain, linear liquid wax esters extracted from
the seeds of the desert shrub simmondsia chinenesis, family simmondsiaceae.
Jojoba oil is easily refined to remove any odor, color it is oxdatively stable, and is
often used in cosmetics as a moisturizer and as a carrier oil for exotic fragrances.
Human sebum and jojoba oil are virtually identical. Sebum protects and
moisturizes the skin and hair but is stripped away by chemicals, pollutants, sun
and the aging process, resulting in dry skin and hair. Jojoba oil replenishes what
skin and hair lose and restores them to their natural pH balance.
Olive oil: This oil is a fixed oil extracted from the fruits of oleo europaea, family
oleaceae. The major constituents are triolein, tripalmitin, trilinolein, tristearate,
monosterate, triarachidin, squalene, β-sitosterol and tocopherol. It is used as skin
and hair conditioner in cosmetics like lotions, shampoos etc. It is a potent fatty
acid penetration enhancer.
Aloevera: Aloevera is an herbal plant species belonging to liliaceae family that
is found only in cultivation, having no naturally occurring populations, although
closely related aloes do have presence in northern Africa [8]. It is an ingredient in
many cosmetics because it heals, moisturizes, and softens skin. Simply cut one of

the aloe Vera leaves to extract the soothing gel. Aloe vera contains amino acids
like leucine, isoleucine, saponin glycosides that provide cleansing action, vitamins
A,C,E,B, choline, B12 and folic acid and provide antioxidant activity.
Herbal Creams and Lotions for skin care
Cold Creams:It is an emulsion in which the fat predominates, but the cooling
effect produced when it is applied to the skin is due to skin evaporation of the
water contained. e.g.: Almond oil.
Vanishing Creams: Vanishing creams are also called foundation creams
because they disappears when Rubbed into skins. e.g.: Rose oil.
Cleansing Creams: A satisfactory cleansing cream is water in oil emulsion
that melts at temperature of body and spreads readily over the skin.
Face Lotion: These are also called the bleaching lotions, actually alter the color
of skin like the whitening creams.

Herbals cosmetic for Hair Care
Amla: Amla is obtained from the plant Emblica Officinalis, Family
Euphorbiaceae72. Amla is rich in vitamin C, tannins and minerals such as
phosphorus, iron and calcium which provides nutrition to hair and also causes
darkening of hair73. Hibiscus consists of calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B1,
riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C, used to stimulate thicker hair growth and
prevents premature graying of hair.
Almond Oil: The almond oil is obtained from Prunus dulcis. The almond oil
basically contains about 78% of this fat. This oil contains very small amounts of
super-unsaturated Omega-3 essential fatty acids 75. It proves to be very
nourishing, and softens and strengthens the hair 76. The almond oil also proves to
be a very good cleansing agent. Almond oil has been used for many centuries,
even before it's spread as a commercial agro-product.

Types of Herbal Hair Care Products
Hair oil: The hair oils used for dressings and nourishing the hairs and grace to
appearance of hairs. This preparations is generally used to increase the growth of
hair and remains healthy. E.g Arnica, shikakai. Hair lotion: Hair lotion has a
stimulating effect upon the hair follicles. They are generally perfumed with oil of
rosemary and others ascenes as it posses a good stimulating property.
Hair colorants: These are preparations which are used for the coloring of the
hairs. They enhance the attractiveness of gray hair. They are applied externally on
the hair with help of brush. E.g Lawsonia alba Lam.
Shampoo: Shampoo is preparation of surfactant in suitable form liquid, solid or
powder, which when used under the condition specified will remove surface
grease, dirt and skin debris from the hair shaft and scalp without affecting
