This document discusses several herbs that are commonly used in herbal cosmetics, including their properties and uses. 2. Herbal cosmetics are defined as the beauty products,
which possess desirable physiological activities, such as
skin healing, smoothing, enhance appearance and
conditioning properties because of herbal ingredients.
The herbal cosmetics are grouped into following major
categories:
a) For enhancing the appearance of facial skin
b) For hair growth and care
c) for skin care, specially in teenagers
d) Shampoo ,soap, powder and perfumery etc

3. Herbs as cosmetics are
1.Aloe Vera (gel)
It is obtained by eliminating the outer most tissue of
leaf of aloe barbadensis found in India etc ,family liliaceaes.
Chemical constituents:
It is rich in water, amino acids, lipids, sterols, enzymes and poly
saccharides.
Cosmetic uses:
1.The is widely used in cosmetology as a hydrating ingredient in
liquid or in creams.
4. 2.It is used in Sun lotion, shaving creams, lip balms ,healing
ointments, face packs and hair conditioners.
3.Extracts of aloe or aloin are used in sun creams and other
cosmetic preparation as emollient, anti wrinkles and wound
healer.
Commercial preparation
Aloe gel products are available liquid and solid form in different
qualities.
It is available in wide range of ladies and gents health.
Skin care preparation such as alovera juice ,medicated jelly, creams
ets.
5. 2.Lemon peel(lemon oil)
Lemon oil is obtained from peel by cold expression.
Cosmetic uses:
1.It is used as fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents ,creams ,
lotions and perfumes.
2.Lemon peel aqueous extract is used in skin and hair care
formulations.
6. 3.Amla (emblica officinalis)
Amla is a fresh and dried fruit of emblica officinalis
(emphorbiaceae)
The taste is sour and astringent.
Chemical constituents:
Amla contains about 5 to 6% tannins.
It is rich source of natural vitamin C.
The fruit is rich source of pectin and minerals like phosphorous,
iron and calcium.
7. Cosmetic uses:
1. It has anti fungal, anti bacterial , antiviral and anti oxidant
properties.
2. It is used in herbal cosmetic preparations , hair dyes and hair
conditioners.
3. It also reduces dandruffs.
4. Amla used in the form of fresh juice, pulp, aqueous extract as
well as oil.

8. 4.Henna(mehendi)
Henna consist of dried leaves of Lawsonia inermis (Lythraceae)
Chemical constituents:
The leaves contains soluble matter lawsone.
The lawsone level in dried drug is 1%
Henna leafs also contains flavanoids, caumarine and xanthones.
The flowers owns their fragrance to an essential oil due to ionone.
9. Cosmetic uses:
Used in many ways as a coloring and cosmetic ingredients.
It is used as a hair color and nail color.
Henna is widely used in cosmetology for its dyeing properties.
It is also used in shampoo and hair lotions.
In ayurvedic preparation for skin ailments, burns and wounds.
10. 5.Turmeric-Indian saffron,Haldi
It consist of dried as well as fresh rhizomes of plant curcuma
longa linn (zingiberaceace)
Chemical constituents:
It contains volatile oils, resins , abundant zingiberaceous starch
grains, curcumin etc.
The chief component is curcumin.
Uses:
Used in ointments and creams.
