Introduction
Grammar is a course which teaches students
about basic English lessons, and the ways how to
use words in a appropriate sentence to make
meaningful communication.
Therefore, this course will lead you to a very
pleasant and challenging journey where you can

can be conveyed, without vocabulary
nothing can be conveyed.”
Harmer: “It may be that communicative
competence is best achieved through
communicating, through making meanings,
and grammar is a way of tidying these
meaning up.”
Brown: “Grammar is the system of rules
governing the conventional arrangement and
relationship of words in a sentence.”

Harmer:
Grammar is a description of the rules
that govern how a language’s sentences are
formed.
Decapua:
“Prescriptive grammar is the grammar taught in school,
discussed in newspaper and magazine columns on language, or
mandated by language academies such as those found in
Spain or France.”
In contrast, “. . . descriptive grammar means saying that
everything is right and nothing is wrong. What
we must consider is the purpose for which a speaker is
using language.”
Commonly it can be found when adult native speakers
actually use their language in their daily activities.

Penny Ur argues,
“Grammar is a set of rules that define how
words (or parts of words) are combined or
changed to form acceptable units of
meaning within a language.”

What is grammar?
a. The Definition of Grammar
Purpura states that grammar is defined in
terms of grammatical form and meaning,
which are available to be accessed in language
use.
In short, it is concluded that grammar is a description of the
rules of forming sentences that uses syntax and morphology
to make chains of words which are available to be accessed
in language in use, so the sentences can be accepted and
understood well.

Therefore, this course will lead you to a very pleasant and challenging journey where you can get the experience of the process of learning English grammar.

Background Wilkins: “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Harmer: “It may be that communicative competence is best achieved through communicating, through making meanings, and grammar is a way of tidying these meaning up.” Brown: “Grammar is the system of rules governing the conventional arrangement and relationship of words in a sentence.” (H. Decapua: “Prescriptive grammar is the grammar taught in school, discussed in newspaper and magazine columns on language, or mandated by language academies such as those found in Spain or France.” In contrast, “. . . descriptive grammar means saying that everything is right and nothing is wrong. What we must consider is the purpose for which a speaker is using language.” Commonly it can be found when adult native speakers actually use their language in their daily activities.   • 15. What is grammar? a. The Definition of Grammar Purpura states that grammar is defined in terms of grammatical form and meaning, which are available to be accessed in language use. In short, it is concluded that grammar is a description of the rules of forming sentences that uses syntax and morphology to make chains of words which are available to be accessed in language in use, so the sentences can be accepted and understood well.
