Replacement of Fossil Fuels with Nuclear Energy for Electricity
ABSTRACT
Our nation is on the brink of an energy crisis and alternative means to produce electricity must be
found. Fossil fuel resources are declining sharply and nuclear energy is the leading form of
replacement. Our research shows that the advantages to this new energy source are extraordinary and
that there are many ways to minimize its negative aspects. Due to the overwhelming advantages, we
have concluded that nuclear energy is indeed the best solution to the nation s energy crisis and with
more advanced research and technology any future problems can be solved.

However, it seems
Nuclear Energy for Electricity 3 that with increased research and experimentation the downsides of
nuclear energy could be minimized to such an extent that in the future all electricity could be produced
though nuclear turbines.
RESULTS/DISCUSSION
There are many advantages associated with the usage of nuclear energy for electricity. While nuclear
energy may seem like an expensive replacement for fossil fuels, in the long run it will cost no more
than coal. Though the construction of nuclear power plants is far more expensive and time consuming
than that of coal burning plants, the cost of actually running nuclear plants is far less. In the following
years the total budget will even out to equal that of coal plants. The construction costs of nuclear
plants comes out to be approximately two to six billion dollars (Nuclear energy in the United States,
2003) but according to studies by NEI the average production costs of nuclear energy have been
decreasing in the past decade. In 1987 the price was at 3.63 cents per kilowatt hour but by 2004 the
cost had come down to 1.68 cents per kilowatt hour (Nuclear energy and the environment, February
2005). This low price is not subject to fluctuations as it is not dependent upon foreign politics.
While both coal and nuclear energy cost about the same in the long run, nuclear energy is devoid of

Essay on Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga
Nervous Conditions is a semi autobiographical story about Tambu, a young girl growing up in rural
Rhodesia in the 1960 s, and her search for a way out for both herself and her family of the tremendous
poverty of homestead life in a colonized African country. Narrated through the eyes of young Tambu,
the story is told with child like simplicity about her and her family fighting to survive in a complex
world of Imperialism, racism, and class and gender inequality. In hindsight, Dangarembga allows the
protagonist s narrative to slowly unravel the meaning of her and her family s struggle with their
assimilation into the strange and powerful culture of their rulers.
The wealth of her uncle Babamukuru coupled with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being the only male child in his father s family, Nhamo was the natural choice in whom Babamukuru
s money would supply an education. He was to be the saviour of his family, their only hope of moving
up, a fact that Nhamo reminded her of constantly. As time progressed, Tambu did not like the way her
brother s education caused him to become embarrassed of his own family, and to despise the squalor
in which they lived. His new life at Babamukuru s house at the mission had changed him, alienating
him from her and his parents.
She was not upset the day her brother died, and felt no guilt for her feelings about him. I was sad for
them [her family] rather than over any loss of mine, because my brother had become a stranger to me.
I was not sorry that he had died, but I was sorry for him because, according to his standards, his life
had been thoroughly worth living (p. 55 56).
Her brother s death, together with her own ingenuity and hard work, soon allowed her to take Nhamo
s place at the mission as the family scholar and benefactor. In the end, it is her coming into her own
feelings, feelings about the way she herself deals with the new world that had been opened up to her,
both its rewards and costs, that does as much to shape her life as any of the education she receives at
school.
Babamukuru is the headmaster at the mission where Tambu attends school. He is well educated in
Western teaching and a stern and stubborn man. He is a kind

Islamism In Iraq
Explain the impact of the role of Islam in the politics of Iraq after Saddam Hussein s dictatorship.
Islamism, as a basic feature of Muslim and especially Arab politics, and has played a major role in
Iraqi politics. There are two branches of Islam present in Iraq, the Shiites (Or Shia) and Sunni. Similar
to Iran and Bahrain, Iraq has a Shiites majority. This majority has, however, not been able to exercise
much political power until the 2000 s, with the removal of President Saddam Hussein and his Sunni
elite. Modern Iraq has a strong affinity between religious devotion and politics.
During the 2003 2011 presence of U.S. forces, Iraq completed a transition from the dictatorship of
Saddam Hussein to a plural political system in which varying ... Show more content on

The primary grievances of most Iraqi Sunnis include the integration of Shi a militias into the Iraqi
Security Forces (ISF), attacks by the ISF in Sunni civilian areas, and political exclusion in Baghdad.
A huge moral and ideological vacuum had emerged in Iraq after Saddam Hussein, and Islam was ideal
to provide a new moral compass to the people. Neighboring states were already moving quickly where
possible to establish centers of influence within Iraq to prepare for the day when U.S. power departs.
Iran supported Islamist movements among the Shia while Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States sought
bolster Sunni forces in Iraq.
The Islamists Shia and Sunni were not automatically hostile to the U.S. presence, especially since both
gained from the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. But they were determined to retain the Muslim
character of Iraq, especially in the face of non Muslim occupation, and cannot long support the U.S.
presence. Islamist power inside Iraq has diminished to the extent there is freedom enjoyed by other
political and religious parties within the country to rival the Islamists. However, as nearly everywhere,
repression of political pluralism invariably works to the benefit of the

One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest Essay example
Throughout the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest , many changes differentiate the movie from
the book. Not only can these differences be seen in the characters of the novel, but also in the series of
events that make this story so interesting. In this essay, the significance of these differences will be
revealed as well as the reasons for the changes. The first difference between the film and the novel is
the narration. In the book, Chief Bromden is the narrator who reveals McMurphy s story in the mental
hospital. Chief is the main character since he is the one who s life we learn about the most throughout
the book. We learn that he is a paranoid schizophrenic, and a half breed Indian. We also learn about his
family and his past. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fishing episode is another great difference between the novel and the movie. In the book, the
fishing trip was a planned event that the Nurse kept trying to ruin. Despite her attempts, McMurphy
managed to convince Dr. Spivey to join the group when a prostitute named Candy came with only one
car. In the movie, McMurphy hijacks a school bus and encourages the other men of his ward to
participate in this act of rebellion against Nurse Ratched. Also, the former fisherman, George, was on
the fishing trip in the book, but was not at all present in the movie. The fishing trip in the movie was
so different from the book because they wanted to show that McMurphy was not conforming to the
Nurse s rules. Unlike in the movie, Cheswick was not present for the fishing trip since he was dead.
We see from this that McMurphy would have normally asked before taking the men on the trip since
he was trying to get on her better side. In the film, McMurphy remains the noncomformist person he
was, up until his lobotomy. However, in the book, Chief observes McMurphy s short attempt to
conform to Nurse Ratched s rules. He notices the growing distrust of the other patients towards
McMurphy and his increasing sadness as he senses his own doom. The ending is probably the biggest
difference between the novel and the film. The book contains an episode

Sons And Lovers By D. H. Lawrence
Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence is based on the life of a boy named Paul Morel, who is going
through life fighting a battle between his mind and heart. Lawrence wrote Sons and Lovers during the
late 1800s and early 1900s. During that time, the book was not like other books. It was explicit about
topics such as sex and love. His books were ahead of time, and he was quite influenced by Sigmund
Freud. I believe that Freud really influenced lawrence s writing during Chapters 6 and 7 when Paul is
starting to get closer to females, and his mother did not want any other female to be in Paul s life other
than herself, which is one of Freud s early theories on sexuality, and Sons and Lovers deeply explores
and revises of one of Freud s major theories, the Oedipus complex, such as Paul truly and deeply loves
his mother compare to any other women that he would give of his love for that woman to show that he
only wants his mother. Sigmund Freud was born from 1856, and died in 1939. Freud is the father of
psychoanalysis. He continued to modify his theory over a period of nearly half a century.
Psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious aspects of personality. According to Freud, the human
mind is like an iceberg. It is mostly hidden in the unconscious. He believed that the conscious level of
the mind was similar to the tip of the iceberg which could be seen, but the unconscious was
mysterious and was hidden. The preconscious consists of that which is not in immediate

Restoring And Improving Urban Infrastructure
The Engineering Grand Challenge of restoring and improving urban infrastructure involves a
foundation of challenges faced by architectural engineers today. Specifically, it is about repairing the
infrastructure of a society, including its power grids, water infrastructure, roads, bridges, sustainable
structures, and anything that provides support to our thriving lifestyle. Admittedly, improving
infrastructure is an important challenge that can be fixed if there are new systems put in place that
allow for improvement at any time in the future. The challenge of restoring and improving an urban
infrastructure can be accomplished, but there need to be technological advances, and support from the
government. Equally important is the need for programs with sufficient financial resources that can
provide for a more up to date installation of the various components of an urban infrastructure.
Perhaps, the best way to solve the Grand Challenge of restoring and improving infrastructure would
be to apply the new technologies that have been investigated and tested the most, and put them into
action. There is no doubt that the infrastructure from the 20th century has been a great
accomplishment, however, we have pushed the problem of improving and restoring the infrastructure
off for years, when it is in current need of repair. Moving forward, it is a necessity that our old
infrastructure be replaced and re engineered the best it can be. Additionally, infrastructure needs to be
built

Shame, By Tim O Brian
Throughout this quarter we have read many books and many genres, at first glance they don t seem to
have any intertwining themes or ideas. Yet when you dig deeper than face value you can see that there
is many underlying themes that the average reader might easily overlook. Shame is an overall human
element that is seen all throughout; The Things They Carried, the Fifth Child, and Pocatello. Shame is
the key to good literature, it is what drives the other emotions, and without shame people would not be
people. The Things They Carried, was riddled with the idea of shame. One simple example is when
Tim O Brian was drafted and he wanted to run away to Canada to be safe from the U.S. military. This
was an important internal battle for him, which he ultimately decided to fight against and join the
army, as law required. Shame was important in this piece of literature to bring out the soldiers feelings
and their true intentions. Shame also came out in the burning of First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross letters
from his sweetheart, Martha, after a man in his company died. He felt shame. He hated himself. He
had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead. He burned the
letters because he was ashamed that he let the letters get to him and distract him from, what he
decided was more important, the war. Ben had to deal with a kinds of shame, he had his family
ashamed of him and he was ashamed of himself. His whole family was disgraced the way he look and

Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston
Throughout many years in the early 19th century, people were forced to work in very poor
environments. From working for long hours on fields and plantations, they did not have an
opportunity to have a free and self fulfilling life. Their lives were very similar to that of a mule where
they had to perform very tiring and hard jobs for most of the day. In many instances, people lived their
whole life working towards freeing themselves from the work but were never able to accomplish their
goal. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the mule is used as a symbol of the
way Janie is treated in each of her relationships except when she is with Teacake, demonstrating that it
is more worthy to work like a mule with a lover than live a leisurely life without one. When Nannie
sees Janie kissing Johnny Taylor, she immediately breaks them up because she is trying to save Janie
from making a bad decision. She says, Janie, youse uh oman, now, so... yeah, Janie, youse got yo
womanhood on yuh... Ah wants to see you married right away (12). Since Janie still has her
womanhood, Nannie wants Janie to be married so her womanhood is not stripped away from her.
Janie s grandmother was raped around the age that Janie is right now and she does not want Janie to
have the same fate. Nannie thinks that by marrying Janie off at a young age it will not only protect her
from other men, but it will also allow her to live a hopeful and prosperous life. After an argument

The post war era in the UK, was a time of austerity and harsh living conditions, even though the
economic situation of the country was looking like it was about to bloom. The play The Browning

and dominance rather than on love and contribution. This piece, allows the reader to experience the
simplistic life of the Crocker Harris household and the tangled unusual relationships that they seem to
encounter in their everyday life. By presenting disloyalty, jealousy and authority the author explores
the extent to which the relationships amongst characters are predominantly based on power, rather

Feminism Essay
Both Virginia Woolf, in a speech addressing a graduating all women class, and Naomi Wolf, in her
text The Beauty Myth, contemplate feminism from an economic viewpoint. While Woolf believes
women need money and a room of their own to have economic independence, Wolf gives credence to
the fact that the beauty industry is hindering the independence of women. Through male pomposity,
the conventional lives of women, obsession with physical appearance, and the reality that beauty is
diverse, both Woolf and Wolf explain the significance of our world s economy.
Women have always been economically dependent on men. Any land or money that was in a woman s

In her speech, Woolf was asked to talk about women and fiction. She resolved that without money nor
education, women would not be able to create fiction. Which is why, in the Elizabethan era, women
did not generate any sort of poetry. Woolf pondered over this for a while, and hypothesized that
Shakespeare had an ingenious sister, Judith. Judith had the imagination and ability to produce creative
works just like her brother. However, Judith never had any education so she wasn t able to thrive. In
short, the story goes like this: Judith s father arranges a marriage for her, Judith runs away from home
and goes to the city, she tries to live out her dream and act, she gets laughed at, she has an affair, and
then Judith kills herself at the crossroads. The fact that Judith kills herself at the crossroads has great
symbolism. The crossroads represents choice. The choice is that one can go along with her potential
and be who she wants to be, or she can go along with the flow.
Even though this choice is existent, it is extremely improbable. As Woolf states, quot;it is unthinkable
that any woman in Shakespeare s day had had
Shakespeare s genius. For genius like Shakespeare s is not born among labouring, uneducated, servile
people, quot; (Woolf 353). Women have never had the opportunity to produce poetry because they
have never been given the freedom they need to do so. Because women have always been poor and

Essay on The Parthenon- A Culture in Itself
One of the most impressive accomplishments of Ancient Greece is the remarkable structure of the
Parthenon on the Acropolis. The Parthenon is one of the most inspiring works of architecture known
to mankind. The project of the extraordinary Acropolis was taken on by one of the most influential
leaders of history, Pericles. Pericles influenced not only the building of one of the grandest works but
the example of democracy displayed by the Greeks. The architecture was unique for its time, it

The Parthenon was built to express greatness of their influential society and honor the goddess
Athena. The Golden Age of Athens is some times referred to as the Age of Pericles, one of the greatest
leaders seen throughout our history. The Parthenon would not have been possible without the efforts
and supervision of Pericles, one of the greatest historical leaders. Pericles dominated Greek politics
for over twenty years. He gained his political start with the help of Ephialtes, together they
reorganized the voting process to involve a popular assembly destroying the power of the Areopagus
or the old noble council. This action completely reformed the democratic system in Athens. This
reform was affluential part to the legend of the power of Athenian democracy. (PBS) Many critiques
of Pericles made gabs at this personal life in which his first wife born him two legitimate sons, he later
divorced her. His later foreign lover was Aspasia she was described by Socrates as the most intelligent
and witty woman of her time. Pericles treated her as an equal, which was unheard of during that age.
They lived together but were never married. It was common for them to host the most intellectual
company for parties and conversation. Pericles was forced to defend Aspasia in a trial has he later
gained power, and the only way his rivals could harm Pericles was by attacking those that were close
to him.(PBS)

Compare Wilfred Owen And Brooke
Good afternoon members of the Australian English literature society, I m so thankful and privileged to
be here today. Throughout many centuries, we have seen the devastation and heartache brought into
our lives by the continuous negativity and hate surrounding vicious war attacks. Today I am here to
give you an insight into the way that poets through history have used war as a meaningful way source
of literature to change and influence the lives of others. The poets in which we will be looking at, are
Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke.
Owen and Brooke were both poets writing during the First World War with poems containing the
themes of war. They both have very different perspectives on the topic. In both Owen s poems Dulce
et decorum Est and insensibility, he highlights the horror and terrifying experiences seen in first hand
from his own experience of being a soldier of war. Both these poems give the reader a sense of fear
and unfamiliarly by explaining the pain and suffering endured throughout the war. He also expresses
his own feelings about how dying at war for your country is not as honourable and glorious as it seems
, he believes that no matter the cause of a soldiers death , it s very painful and disheartening to all
those around.
While on the other hand in Brooke s poem, The Soldier gives off the impression that dying in war and
battle for one s country is a very honourable and glorious time. A belief that can be seen in Brookes
poem is that he believes it is a

Locus Of Control
Introduction
Our perception about where control lies can have an impact on the way we think and the way we
associate with our changing environment, which can affect the way we attribute success and failure to
things we have control over or to situations outside our control. Therefore, the locus of control we
choose has a strong bearing on our long term success. In this essay, I am going to discuss locus of
control, describes what my locus of control score means and details the impact that I believe my locus
of control will have on my success in this degree program.
Definition of terms
Locus of control is a study dated back to 1960s with Julian Rotter s inquiry into how individual s
behavior and attitudes influence the outcomes of their lives. According to Bauer Talya and Erdogan
Berrin (2009), the locus of control is the standard to which people feel responsible for their behaviors

Greek Intellectual Values
Throughout the time period of 600 BCE to 600 CE, many societies learned to develop innovative
ways of living and flourishing. Many of the views on society and the way they believed a society
should be run overall, impacted the way civilizations are run today. Some of the civilizations that
helped to develop this were Greece, Rome, the Maya, and Alexander the Great s Empire. This age
helped develop different political, cultural and intellectual values. Many of these developments began
in Athens, but other city states also played an important role. One of the political values Greek
civilizations developed is the use of philosophy in the form of humanism. In addition, there cultural
values consisted of try to portray themselves to the gods to seem worthy. Lastly, the Greek s impacted
us through many intellectual values one being, there form of architecture and there way of art in that
specific civilization. But overall Greeks helped to develop forms of literature, philosophy, art, and the
understanding of the world around them.
While these events in Greece occurred a war broke out between Greece and Persia known as the
Persian War. The war occurred in 5th century BCE and had a long lasting effect on Greece. In 599

The Nature Of Love In Plato s Symposium
Plato s Symposium discusses the ever present, complicated, and enigmatic idea of love. Throughout
the book, each speech gives diverse and sometimes contradictory ideas on the nature of love, its
benefits, its origin, and the different types of love. Each speech builds on ideas that will lead to the
conclusion made in Diotima s speech.
Phaedrus is the first to give his speech. He says that Love promotes virtue in people, and gives them
courage. Because people want to impress their lovers and avoid shame, they will strive to act
honorably and bravely. The power of love is so strong that if there was a city comprised of boys and
their lovers, it would be the best possible system of society, for they would hold back from all that is
shameful, and seek honor in each other s eyes (10). Phaedrus emphasizes the power of love by saying
that a city founded on love would be of the highest quality.
This introduces the idea of love being a powerful motivator, therefore setting the foundation for the
ladder of love mentioned in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to introduce the idea that love
motivates people to strive for higher ideals. In his speech, the ideal is esteem in the eyes of a loved
one. Later on, more ideals such as wisdom and order will be mentioned. This will develop into the
climbing of the ladder of love, as mentioned by Diotima.
Next, Pausanias says love is not inherently good or bad. It depends on how it is performed. There are
two kinds of love: Common Aphrodite and Heavenly Aphrodite; one is just about sex, while the other
is a transaction in which a boy gives sexual favors to a man in exchange for wisdom and
enlightenment. The former type has potential to be bad, and is less valuable because it focuses on the
body more than the soul, and...the least intelligent partners (14). Pausanias places all favor on the
latter type because it focuses on what is by nature stronger and more intelligent rather than base
desires (14).
This sets the foundation for the hierarchy of the aforementioned ladder of love. According to Diotima,
the more advanced kind of love is the love of knowledge, which is what a young boy receives through
Heavenly Aphrodite. At the bottom of the ladder is the type of love

Margaret Paston Letters
There are thousands of surviving letters written by members of the Paston family, who lived in East
Anglia in the fifteenth century. Margaret Paston, an heiress of the Mautby family who married the
lawyer John Paston I in 1440, wrote many of these letters. This particular letter, written in a plain and
conversational style expected of personal correspondences of this period , deals with the secret
marriage of Margaret s daughter Margery Paston to the family bailiff Richard Calle. It was written
September tenth, 1469, to Sir John Paston II, Margaret s son, who was working as a Justice of the
Peace in Norfolk . Margaret acted as a business partner with her husband as he was often away
working in London. The letters she wrote to him often detail the ways she is upholding her role as
wife and mother, as well as casting dispersions on those who fail to live up to society s standards for
conduct. As the wife of a lawyer, she most certainly knew the value of written evidence, and many of
her letters may be looked at as her way of proving she was fulfilling her obligations to her family . ...

According to the Introduction to Strategic Studies Course Directive, This year presents an opportunity
to walk in the shoes of senior leaders making difficult and complex decisions before you begin
wearing them upon graduation. From the above sentence I can conclude that, this paper could be the
beginning of my journey to wear the higher level leaders shoes. As I am now starting preparation for a
future senior leadership assignment, I have to equip myself with the required knowledge and skills in
order to act as senior military leader.
Therefore, Thomas Galvin outlines four mission specific roles and senior military leaders should also
take lessons from history, like from The Gulf War, 1990 1991, .
The four roles are, a strategic advisor and communicator, a strategic planner, a strategic theorist, and
senior leader at the strategic level. So that this paper will focus mainly on my reflection towards to the
first two mission specific roles.
Therefore, my choice from the roles are the strategic advisor and communicator, and the strategic
planner because working to exercise these roles would have more benefit to jump for the rest two
roles. From the case study, I have selected General Collin Powel and General H. Norman
Schwarzkopf roles from the case study. In order to link and reflect my future area that should be

Even though Yu Hua, the author of novel To Live, is also the scriptwriter of Zhang Yimou s film To

part of the novel is the excavation of humanity: having experienced the loss of wealth, family and

the novel actually more wants to show the dark side of Chinese society. However, the film

Clearly, the direct difference between the novel and film on the plot development should be the fact
that in the book all Fugui s family dies, including Jiazhen and Kugen. The ending of the novel leads
the readers have a sad and helpless feeling except that Fugui becomes very silent and enlightened. The
sorrow ending of his life can also be treated by Fugui as a way of hope. Wu Wei is interpreted in the
book through the idea of simplicity in Fugui s life. At the beginning of the book, Fugui even attempted
to kill himself when he lost all his family money from gambling; however, at the end, after
experiencing loss of family, wealth and friends, he finally understood the meaning of life. At about the
end of the story, Fugui said, Look at the people around me, like Long Er and Chunsheng. They each
had their day in the sun, but in the end they lost their lives. It s better to live an ordinary life. If you go
on striving for this and that, you ll end up paying with your life. The recall of his life and his statement
about his experience actually stand on a critical point towards those people who attempted to get away
their ordinary lives. Hence, Yu Hua s To Live tells the readers a story about how a man survived and
lived through the most chaotic eras in modern Chinese history by obeying a life of simplicity.
Although Fugui thought about to suicide at the beginning, but when he came to directly face death,

World Systems Theory By Sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein
In the perspective of world systems theory, the United States is considered a core country, whereas the
global South (Africa, Latin America, and evolving Asia including the Middle East) contains a
multitude of peripheral countries. With such extensive poverty impeding the progress of countries
within the global South, it is possible that the United States can provide effective assistance. However,
an explanation must be presented to express how these core countries and peripheral countries become
just that, in order to determine how they can change their status. This paper intends to address how
countries grow, how the US can aid the global South in the struggle of poverty, and the possibility of
altering trade policies to eventually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When it comes to sovereignty, there are two types: internal and external. Internal sovereignty occurs
within your borders, whilst external sovereignty is when other countries recognize this total
autonomous power that has accumulated. Wallerstein agreed with the concept of less borders and
more commonalities. He theorized that the core and the periphery should think and act more as a
whole rather than different parts, as those parts affect the outcome of the same machine. Therefore, it
would stand to reason that if the United States were to assist the global South in reducing poverty, that
it would actually be beneficial for the system as a whole.
US aid: In the current world economy, core countries such as the US go through increases in wages,
employment, and general prosperity. However, when this phase comes to an end, it is the peripheral
countries that bear the burden. (Wallerstein, 30) For example, let s say that the US produces a product.
The production of this good does quite well, until there is a tipping point, otherwise known as an
overproduction . The product is manufactured at such a high rate that it surpasses the actual demand
for said good. Due to the surplus, the prices become more competitive and continue to decline, which
means that there is less of a profit. So, core countries then outsource their production processes to

In the 1980s, some enclosed malls were remodelled into open air shopping centres. By the mid 1990s,
Malls were still being constructed at a rate of 140 a year. The trend was to build enclosed malls and to
renovate older outdoor malls into enclosed ones. Such malls had advantages, including temperature
control. But by the end of 1990 s the trend took a sharp turn and it was again fashionable to build open
air malls. Finally by 2001, a PricewaterhouseCoopers study found that underperforming and vacant
malls were an emerging problem.
According to new trends, the outdoor outlet malls or big box shopping areas known as power centres
are now favoured, although the traditional enclosed shopping mall is still in demand by those seeking
weather protected, all under one roof shopping. High land prices in populated cities have led to the
concept of the vertical mall, in which space allocated to retail is configured over a number of stories
accessible by elevators and/or escalators (usually both) linking the different levels of the mall.
The major challenge was to encourage the shopper to move upwards downwards, different from the
traditional tendency of moving horizontally. Vertical malls are common in densely populated
conurbations such as Hong Kong and Bangkok. Ex Times Square in Hong Kong.

Tip of the tongue States Metacognitive Awareness Melinda Ortiz Florida International University
Word Count: 913 Have you ever had a feeling of forgetting a word or name you desperately want to
say but can not quite get your thought wrapped around the actual word? This phenomenon is called tip
of the tongue, or TOT. As stated in the text, TOT describes your subjunctive experience of knowing a
target word in which you are searching, but cannot recall what the subjunctive word is at that very
moment (Matlin, 2014). Individuals whom experience a TOT moment can recall several phonological
features of the target word such as a first letter, syllables, or other words that are similar, although the

Mentally he knew the names that were on each of the pictures but could not actually get the word out.
He was then asked to try and indicate a phonological feature of the word, or another word that was
similar to the target word, but he was unable to provide any information phonologically that was
associated to the target word. The experiment preformed on Dante in this article supports the two
stage model of lexical production regarding the lexical retrieval failure of words (Badecker at. El). In
conclusion, the tip of the tongue phenomenon is an experience that happens to everyone sometime
during his or her life. Trying to recall a word can be frustrating, but with the help of phonological
indicators, word retrieval can be possible. Our lexicon, or word bank is filled with tens of thousands of
words that we learn over time, so difficulty trying to retrieve the right word from our bank advocates
that there are so many words that could fit one category and the one we are trying to retrieve is at the
tip of our tongue. The tip of the tongue phenomenon is associated with lexical retrieval failure because
it is an event where a word could not be recalled to finish a thought. The study by Badecker et. al
(2011), supports the idea of lexical retrieval failure in that individuals who have trouble recalling
words have an idea of what they want to say but cannot retrieve the word. References Biedermann, B.,

Dimensional Fund Advisors Case 1. Describe the investment strategy employed by DFA. Does DFA

DFA s investment strategy was centered on academic research, specifically on the findings of Banz
size effect and Fama and French s book to market effect. In Banz research, he found that small stocks
consistently outperformed large stocks over the entire history of the stock market from 1926 through

DFA s founders believed in two principals (outside of efficient markets): the value of sound academic
research, and the ability of skilled traders to contribute to a fund s profits even when the investment
was inherently passive. By working closely with the academic world, DFA is able to exploit
opportunities generated from academic research before others are able to; this creates opportunities for
short and long term excess return. Also, working in stocks that other mutual funds do not participate
(micro, small cap) allows DFA to exploit opportunities in otherwise illiquid stocks. By having a large
presence in this market, the company is able to take advantage of trading opportunities with
counterparts (liquidity discounts from block purchases).
5. What level of market efficiency does DFA accept? Why this level and not any other?
DFA accepts the semi strong form efficiency of the market. DFA feels that on average the market price
correctly incorporates all public information. Its concern is merely that there is no negative private
information known to the seller but not to the market. If DFA did not have concern of negative
information known by the seller and not the market, the strong form of efficiency would be
appropriate (this version of the efficient market hypothesis is quite extreme).

The Consequences Of Recidivism
Americans today tend to associate recidivism with individuals who continuously see prison as a
revolving door and continues to re offend. The term refers to the act of committing another crime after
a person has already received punishment for previous offenses, in other words, relapse. The term is
also used to describe individuals who tend to relapse to a life of questionable behavior. The social
process theory may explain a possible link to recidivism, and this argument known in the criminal
justice sector as a criminal behavior that is a predictable result of a person s interaction with his or her
environment as mentioned in the book, Criminal Justice in Action the Core ; Nevertheless, whatever
the case may be, recidivism has become a vicious cycle as in the case of Michael Christopher Mejia,
[a]n admitted gang member told detectives he smoked a Whittier police officer and his cousin and shot
another cop, according to a tape recorded interview played in court... during a hearing to determine if
there is enough evidence for him to stand trial for the killings (NBC4). Likewise, recidivism is that
individual who is responsible for subjecting their spouse or partner to repeated domestic violence.
Domestic violence offenders resort to physical abuse as a method of establishing control and power in
a relationship. Most victims of domestic violence usually are subjected to more than one instance of
abuse by the same partner. It is very common for a batterer to submit

Essay On Single American Food
Diet is a huge concern for many people today who are either trying to control a preventable disease or
those people who are trying to lose the excess weight that they are carrying around with them. Not
only has our diet as Americans been steadily getting worse but as our population has risen there have
been very few attempts to counter the negative effects that over processing our food has done. Every
Single American, who has eaten the hot lunches at school remembers and has a first hand knowledge
of the taste of preservatives and manufactured flavor of the food they ate during their formative years
attending Elementary through High School. To get an understanding of our diet we need to see the
what has been in front of our faces for generations. In fact at least 2 generations. The only generation
in its entirety to to not see food that was processed and packaged for shelf life was that of our greatest
generation... those people who fought and won World War II. Many of them were exposed to it during
their time in the Military but up until then had probably grown most of their food themselves or, at the
very least, had access to fresh, food sans preservatives. What was it about that time frame that has now
caused the greatest lack of basic constituents that food has ever known? I will cover that in another
article. You, like me have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This doesn t mean that I advocate vegetarianism or veganism as that is a specific choice with it s own
dietary needs and choices. However essential oils are a good way for vegetarians and vegans to
supplement what they are lacking in their diets unless they grow all their food themselves, but I
digress. Essential oils are part of the Alternative Medicine category but are becoming more and more
relevant in Conventional Medicine as scientists are realizing the importance of these very basic
substances because of their wide variety of

mapping. INTRODUCTION TO MOBILE PHONES Wireless communication has come a long way
since weighing around 1.1 kg in 1983 to the myriad of smartphones available in the market today that
are lightweight and loaded with endless features. But it all began towards the 20th century, when
telegraph and radio technology were evolving tremendously. The transatlantic telegraph was built by
1866. An affinity towards wireless communication was growing for a number of reasons: (i) Increased
mobility. (ii) No wiring. (iii) Remote access. (iv) Innovative solution. (v) Defence strategies. The
concept of mobile phones is based on a very sophisticated radio. Mobile phones have power run
transmitters in them. This power is supplied by a battery. A low power phone requires smaller battery
that allows use of hand held sets, which are not overly bulky. Transmitters convert voice/sound into
electrical signals sent over a frequency spectrum that are received at the station and converted back to

John Davis Life Extension Essay
In Is It Unjust to Develop Life Extension if It Will Not Be Possible to Provide It to Everyone? , John
Davis argues on the fact on whether or not we should develop life extension if it won t bet fairly
distributed amongst our society. Davis believes that the rich will most likely have access to life
extension before the poor, which creates the issue of unequal access to life extension. In this essay, I
will be siding with Davis argument, as there should be no reason to develop and research life
extension if we cannot make it available to everyone at once.
John Davis believes that life extension would be too expensive to those who cannot afford it when it
comes to repayment. In addition, Davis also states that being excluded from life extension ... Show

In this case, I would have to stand with Davis support in delaying life extension, as it will take a long
period of time to develop and allocate life extension around the world equally. Being able to take
advantage of life extension would lead us into to the inability to repay the efforts that were put into
researching and developing life extension. For example, if we were able to take out a loan for life
extension, then the time in life we have to repay for life extension would also increase. Life extension
would also worsen our death, then it would better our death, as we are harmed comparatively on
impending death. When you anticipate your future death to be in your early nineties, it may not sound
as bad when there is no life extension available, but when you see a wealthy person live into their
hundreds with life extension, it will make your death sound worse off if you died in your nineties. We
have to delay the development and access to life extension until we can find a way to distribute life
extension evenly between the have and have nots in our society. For example, the cost of technology
in our world becomes cheaper overtime when there are competitors who developing the same
technology. The Apple iPhone and

Analysis of Richard Iii s Winter of Discontent Speech
William Shakespeare s Richard III is a historical play that focuses on one of his most famous and
complex villainous characters. Richard III or The Duke of Gloucester, who eventually becomes king,
is ambitious, bitter, ugly and deformed. He manipulates and murders his way to the throne and sets the
tone for the whole play with his very first speech, which is the opening of the play. Richard opens with
the lines now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York, and all the
clouds that loured upon our house in the deep bosom of the ocean buried (1.1.1 4). These lines use the
metaphor of changing seasons, winter signifying trouble and summer content, to show how his brother

Since Richard cannot do anything about his deformity and ugliness he turns his bitterness to ambition
and lays the groundwork for his plan to betray King Edward IV. Richard tells the audience, plots have

the King in deadly hate against the other; and if King Edward be as true and just as I am subtle, false,
and treacherous, this day should Clarence closely be mewed up, about a prophecy, which says that G
OF Edward s heirs the murderer shall be (1.1.32 40). In these lines, Richard reveals his plan that he
will turn Clarence and King Edward against each other so Edward will banish Clarence to the tower
because he believes Clarence will be his murderer. Richard will do this through declaring a prophecy
that this will be so. Richard explains that this will work because King Edward is as just as Richard is
treacherous and Richard will use that against King Edward to cause his and Clarence s demise. It is
not known whether the character Richard would have revealed more about his plan this early in the
play because he is interrupted by Clarence. Richard ends the speech with the lines, dive thoughts

Replacement of Fossil Fuels with Nuclear Energy for Electricity ABSTRACT Our nation is on the brink of an energy crisis and alternative means to produce electricity must be found. Fossil fuel resources are declining sharply and nuclear energy is the leading form of replacement. Our research shows that the advantages to this new energy source are extraordinary and that there are many ways to minimize its negative aspects. Due to the overwhelming advantages, we have concluded that nuclear energy is indeed the best solution to the nation s energy crisis and with more advanced research and technology any future problems can be solved. However, it seems Nuclear Energy for Electricity 3 that with increased research and experimentation the downsides of nuclear energy could be minimized to such an extent that in the future all electricity could be produced though nuclear turbines. RESULTS/DISCUSSION There are many advantages associated with the usage of nuclear energy for electricity. While nuclear energy may seem like an expensive replacement for fossil fuels, in the long run it will cost no more than coal. Though the construction of nuclear power plants is far more expensive and time consuming than that of coal burning plants, the cost of actually running nuclear plants is far less. In the following years the total budget will even out to equal that of coal plants. The construction costs of nuclear plants comes out to be approximately two to six billion dollars (Nuclear energy in the United States, 2003) but according to studies by NEI the average production costs of nuclear energy have been decreasing in the past decade. In 1987 the price was at 3.63 cents per kilowatt hour but by 2004 the cost had come down to 1.68 cents per kilowatt hour (Nuclear energy and the environment, February 2005). This low price is not subject to fluctuations as it is not dependent upon foreign politics. While both coal and nuclear energy cost about the same in the long run, nuclear energy is devoid of the ... • 4. Essay on Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga Nervous Conditions is a semi autobiographical story about Tambu, a young girl growing up in rural Rhodesia in the 1960 s, and her search for a way out for both herself and her family of the tremendous poverty of homestead life in a colonized African country. Narrated through the eyes of young Tambu, the story is told with child like simplicity about her and her family fighting to survive in a complex world of Imperialism, racism, and class and gender inequality. In hindsight, Dangarembga allows the protagonist s narrative to slowly unravel the meaning of her and her family s struggle with their assimilation into the strange and powerful culture of their rulers. Being the only male child in his father s family, Nhamo was the natural choice in whom Babamukuru s money would supply an education. He was to be the saviour of his family, their only hope of moving up, a fact that Nhamo reminded her of constantly. As time progressed, Tambu did not like the way her brother s education caused him to become embarrassed of his own family, and to despise the squalor in which they lived. His new life at Babamukuru s house at the mission had changed him, alienating him from her and his parents. She was not upset the day her brother died, and felt no guilt for her feelings about him. I was sad for them [her family] rather than over any loss of mine, because my brother had become a stranger to me. I was not sorry that he had died, but I was sorry for him because, according to his standards, his life had been thoroughly worth living (p. 55 56). Her brother s death, together with her own ingenuity and hard work, soon allowed her to take Nhamo s place at the mission as the family scholar and benefactor. In the end, it is her coming into her own feelings, feelings about the way she herself deals with the new world that had been opened up to her, both its rewards and costs, that does as much to shape her life as any of the education she receives at school. Babamukuru is the headmaster at the mission where Tambu attends school. He is well educated in Western teaching and a stern and stubborn man. He is a kind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Islamism, as a basic feature of Muslim and especially Arab politics, and has played a major role in Iraqi politics. There are two branches of Islam present in Iraq, the Shiites (Or Shia) and Sunni. Similar to Iran and Bahrain, Iraq has a Shiites majority. This majority has, however, not been able to exercise much political power until the 2000 s, with the removal of President Saddam Hussein and his Sunni elite. Modern Iraq has a strong affinity between religious devotion and politics. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The primary grievances of most Iraqi Sunnis include the integration of Shi a militias into the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), attacks by the ISF in Sunni civilian areas, and political exclusion in Baghdad. A huge moral and ideological vacuum had emerged in Iraq after Saddam Hussein, and Islam was ideal to provide a new moral compass to the people. Neighboring states were already moving quickly where possible to establish centers of influence within Iraq to prepare for the day when U.S. power departs. Iran supported Islamist movements among the Shia while Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States sought bolster Sunni forces in Iraq. The Islamists Shia and Sunni were not automatically hostile to the U.S. presence, especially since both gained from the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. But they were determined to retain the Muslim character of Iraq, especially in the face of non Muslim occupation, and cannot long support the U.S. presence. • 6. One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest Essay example Throughout the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest , many changes differentiate the movie from the book. Not only can these differences be seen in the characters of the novel, but also in the series of events that make this story so interesting. In this essay, the significance of these differences will be revealed as well as the reasons for the changes. The first difference between the film and the novel is the narration. In the book, Chief Bromden is the narrator who reveals McMurphy s story in the mental hospital. Chief is the main character since he is the one who s life we learn about the most throughout the book. We learn that he is a paranoid schizophrenic, and a half breed Indian. We also learn about his family and his past. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fishing episode is another great difference between the novel and the movie. In the book, the fishing trip was a planned event that the Nurse kept trying to ruin. Despite her attempts, McMurphy managed to convince Dr. Spivey to join the group when a prostitute named Candy came with only one car. In the movie, McMurphy hijacks a school bus and encourages the other men of his ward to participate in this act of rebellion against Nurse Ratched. Also, the former fisherman, George, was on the fishing trip in the book, but was not at all present in the movie. The fishing trip in the movie was so different from the book because they wanted to show that McMurphy was not conforming to the Nurse s rules. Unlike in the movie, Cheswick was not present for the fishing trip since he was dead. We see from this that McMurphy would have normally asked before taking the men on the trip since he was trying to get on her better side. In the film, McMurphy remains the noncomformist person he was, up until his lobotomy. However, in the book, Chief observes McMurphy s short attempt to conform to Nurse Ratched s rules. He notices the growing distrust of the other patients towards McMurphy and his increasing sadness as he senses his own doom. The ending is probably the biggest difference between the novel and the film. The book contains an episode ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Sons And Lovers By D. H. Lawrence Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence is based on the life of a boy named Paul Morel, who is going through life fighting a battle between his mind and heart. Lawrence wrote Sons and Lovers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. During that time, the book was not like other books. It was explicit about topics such as sex and love. His books were ahead of time, and he was quite influenced by Sigmund Freud. I believe that Freud really influenced lawrence s writing during Chapters 6 and 7 when Paul is starting to get closer to females, and his mother did not want any other female to be in Paul s life other than herself, which is one of Freud s early theories on sexuality, and Sons and Lovers deeply explores and revises of one of Freud s major theories, the Oedipus complex, such as Paul truly and deeply loves his mother compare to any other women that he would give of his love for that woman to show that he only wants his mother. Sigmund Freud was born from 1856, and died in 1939. Freud is the father of psychoanalysis. He continued to modify his theory over a period of nearly half a century. Psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious aspects of personality. According to Freud, the human mind is like an iceberg. It is mostly hidden in the unconscious. He believed that the conscious level of the mind was similar to the tip of the iceberg which could be seen, but the unconscious was mysterious and was hidden. The preconscious consists of that which is not in immediate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Restoring And Improving Urban Infrastructure The Engineering Grand Challenge of restoring and improving urban infrastructure involves a foundation of challenges faced by architectural engineers today. Specifically, it is about repairing the infrastructure of a society, including its power grids, water infrastructure, roads, bridges, sustainable structures, and anything that provides support to our thriving lifestyle. Admittedly, improving infrastructure is an important challenge that can be fixed if there are new systems put in place that allow for improvement at any time in the future. The challenge of restoring and improving an urban infrastructure can be accomplished, but there need to be technological advances, and support from the government. Equally important is the need for programs with sufficient financial resources that can provide for a more up to date installation of the various components of an urban infrastructure. Perhaps, the best way to solve the Grand Challenge of restoring and improving infrastructure would be to apply the new technologies that have been investigated and tested the most, and put them into action. There is no doubt that the infrastructure from the 20th century has been a great accomplishment, however, we have pushed the problem of improving and restoring the infrastructure off for years, when it is in current need of repair. Moving forward, it is a necessity that our old infrastructure be replaced and re engineered the best it can be. Additionally, infrastructure needs to be built ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Shame, By Tim O Brian Throughout this quarter we have read many books and many genres, at first glance they don t seem to have any intertwining themes or ideas. Yet when you dig deeper than face value you can see that there is many underlying themes that the average reader might easily overlook. Shame is an overall human element that is seen all throughout; The Things They Carried, the Fifth Child, and Pocatello. Shame is the key to good literature, it is what drives the other emotions, and without shame people would not be people. The Things They Carried, was riddled with the idea of shame. One simple example is when Tim O Brian was drafted and he wanted to run away to Canada to be safe from the U.S. military. This was an important internal battle for him, which he ultimately decided to fight against and join the army, as law required. Shame was important in this piece of literature to bring out the soldiers feelings and their true intentions. Shame also came out in the burning of First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross letters from his sweetheart, Martha, after a man in his company died. He felt shame. He hated himself. He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead. He burned the letters because he was ashamed that he let the letters get to him and distract him from, what he decided was more important, the war. • 11. Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston Throughout many years in the early 19th century, people were forced to work in very poor environments. From working for long hours on fields and plantations, they did not have an opportunity to have a free and self fulfilling life. Their lives were very similar to that of a mule where they had to perform very tiring and hard jobs for most of the day. In many instances, people lived their whole life working towards freeing themselves from the work but were never able to accomplish their goal. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the mule is used as a symbol of the way Janie is treated in each of her relationships except when she is with Teacake, demonstrating that it is more worthy to work like a mule with a lover than live a leisurely life without one. When Nannie sees Janie kissing Johnny Taylor, she immediately breaks them up because she is trying to save Janie from making a bad decision. She says, Janie, youse uh oman, now, so... yeah, Janie, youse got yo womanhood on yuh... Ah wants to see you married right away (12). Janie s grandmother was raped around the age that Janie is right now and she does not want Janie to have the same fate. While Woolf believes women need money and a room of their own to have economic independence, Wolf gives credence to the fact that the beauty industry is hindering the independence of women. Through male pomposity, the conventional lives of women, obsession with physical appearance, and the reality that beauty is diverse, both Woolf and Wolf explain the significance of our world s economy. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her speech, Woolf was asked to talk about women and fiction. She resolved that without money nor education, women would not be able to create fiction. Which is why, in the Elizabethan era, women did not generate any sort of poetry. Woolf pondered over this for a while, and hypothesized that Shakespeare had an ingenious sister, Judith. Judith had the imagination and ability to produce creative works just like her brother. However, Judith never had any education so she wasn t able to thrive. In short, the story goes like this: Judith s father arranges a marriage for her, Judith runs away from home and goes to the city, she tries to live out her dream and act, she gets laughed at, she has an affair, and then Judith kills herself at the crossroads. The fact that Judith kills herself at the crossroads has great symbolism. The crossroads represents choice. The choice is that one can go along with her potential and be who she wants to be, or she can go along with the flow. Even though this choice is existent, it is extremely improbable. As Woolf states, quot;it is unthinkable that any woman in Shakespeare s day had had Shakespeare s genius. For genius like Shakespeare s is not born among labouring, uneducated, servile people, quot; (Woolf 353). Throughout many centuries, we have seen the devastation and heartache brought into our lives by the continuous negativity and hate surrounding vicious war attacks. Today I am here to give you an insight into the way that poets through history have used war as a meaningful way source of literature to change and influence the lives of others. The poets in which we will be looking at, are Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke. Owen and Brooke were both poets writing during the First World War with poems containing the themes of war. They both have very different perspectives on the topic. In both Owen s poems Dulce et decorum Est and insensibility, he highlights the horror and terrifying experiences seen in first hand from his own experience of being a soldier of war. Both these poems give the reader a sense of fear and unfamiliarly by explaining the pain and suffering endured throughout the war. He also expresses his own feelings about how dying at war for your country is not as honourable and glorious as it seems , he believes that no matter the cause of a soldiers death , it s very painful and disheartening to all those around. While on the other hand in Brooke s poem, The Soldier gives off the impression that dying in war and battle for one s country is a very honourable and glorious time. • 28. The Nature Of Love In Plato s Symposium Plato s Symposium discusses the ever present, complicated, and enigmatic idea of love. Throughout the book, each speech gives diverse and sometimes contradictory ideas on the nature of love, its benefits, its origin, and the different types of love. Each speech builds on ideas that will lead to the conclusion made in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to give his speech. He says that Love promotes virtue in people, and gives them courage. Because people want to impress their lovers and avoid shame, they will strive to act honorably and bravely. The power of love is so strong that if there was a city comprised of boys and their lovers, it would be the best possible system of society, for they would hold back from all that is shameful, and seek honor in each other s eyes (10). Phaedrus emphasizes the power of love by saying that a city founded on love would be of the highest quality. This introduces the idea of love being a powerful motivator, therefore setting the foundation for the ladder of love mentioned in Diotima s speech. Phaedrus is the first to introduce the idea that love motivates people to strive for higher ideals. In his speech, the ideal is esteem in the eyes of a loved one. Later on, more ideals such as wisdom and order will be mentioned. This will develop into the climbing of the ladder of love, as mentioned by Diotima. Next, Pausanias says love is not inherently good or bad. It depends on how it is performed. There are two kinds of love: Common Aphrodite and Heavenly Aphrodite; one is just about sex, while the other is a transaction in which a boy gives sexual favors to a man in exchange for wisdom and enlightenment. The former type has potential to be bad, and is less valuable because it focuses on the body more than the soul, and...the least intelligent partners (14). Pausanias places all favor on the latter type because it focuses on what is by nature stronger and more intelligent rather than base desires (14). This sets the foundation for the hierarchy of the aforementioned ladder of love. According to Diotima, the more advanced kind of love is the love of knowledge, which is what a young boy receives through Heavenly Aphrodite. At the bottom of the ladder is the type of love ... • 29. Margaret Paston Letters There are thousands of surviving letters written by members of the Paston family, who lived in East Anglia in the fifteenth century. Margaret Paston, an heiress of the Mautby family who married the lawyer John Paston I in 1440, wrote many of these letters. This particular letter, written in a plain and conversational style expected of personal correspondences of this period , deals with the secret marriage of Margaret s daughter Margery Paston to the family bailiff Richard Calle. It was written September tenth, 1469, to Sir John Paston II, Margaret s son, who was working as a Justice of the Peace in Norfolk . Margaret acted as a business partner with her husband as he was often away working in London. The letters she wrote to him often detail the ways she is upholding her role as wife and mother, as well as casting dispersions on those who fail to live up to society s standards for conduct. By telling the readers the miserable life of Fugui, the novel actually more wants to show the dark side of Chinese society. The sorrow ending of his life can also be treated by Fugui as a way of hope. Wu Wei is interpreted in the book through the idea of simplicity in Fugui s life. At the beginning of the book, Fugui even attempted to kill himself when he lost all his family money from gambling; however, at the end, after experiencing loss of family, wealth and friends, he finally understood the meaning of life. At about the end of the story, Fugui said, Look at the people around me, like Long Er and Chunsheng. They each had their day in the sun, but in the end they lost their lives. World Systems Theory By Sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein In the perspective of world systems theory, the United States is considered a core country, whereas the global South (Africa, Latin America, and evolving Asia including the Middle East) contains a multitude of peripheral countries. With such extensive poverty impeding the progress of countries within the global South, it is possible that the United States can provide effective assistance. However, an explanation must be presented to express how these core countries and peripheral countries become just that, in order to determine how they can change their status. This paper intends to address how countries grow, how the US can aid the global South in the struggle of poverty, and the possibility of altering trade policies to eventually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When it comes to sovereignty, there are two types: internal and external. Internal sovereignty occurs within your borders, whilst external sovereignty is when other countries recognize this total autonomous power that has accumulated. Wallerstein agreed with the concept of less borders and more commonalities. He theorized that the core and the periphery should think and act more as a whole rather than different parts, as those parts affect the outcome of the same machine. Therefore, it would stand to reason that if the United States were to assist the global South in reducing poverty, that it would actually be beneficial for the system as a whole. US aid: In the current world economy, core countries such as the US go through increases in wages, employment, and general prosperity. However, when this phase comes to an end, it is the peripheral countries that bear the burden. (Wallerstein, 30) For example, let s say that the US produces a product. The production of this good does quite well, until there is a tipping point, otherwise known as an overproduction . The product is manufactured at such a high rate that it surpasses the actual demand for said good. Due to the surplus, the prices become more competitive and continue to decline, which means that there is less of a profit. So, core countries then outsource their production processes to ... But by the end of 1990 s the trend took a sharp turn and it was again fashionable to build open air malls. According to new trends, the outdoor outlet malls or big box shopping areas known as power centres are now favoured, although the traditional enclosed shopping mall is still in demand by those seeking weather protected, all under one roof shopping. He was then asked to try and indicate a phonological feature of the word, or another word that was similar to the target word, but he was unable to provide any information phonologically that was associated to the target word. The experiment preformed on Dante in this article supports the two stage model of lexical production regarding the lexical retrieval failure of words (Badecker at. El). In conclusion, the tip of the tongue phenomenon is an experience that happens to everyone sometime during his or her life. Trying to recall a word can be frustrating, but with the help of phonological indicators, word retrieval can be possible. Our lexicon, or word bank is filled with tens of thousands of words that we learn over time, so difficulty trying to retrieve the right word from our bank advocates that there are so many words that could fit one category and the one we are trying to retrieve is at the tip of our tongue. The tip of the tongue phenomenon is associated with lexical retrieval failure because it is an event where a word could not be recalled to finish a thought. The study by Badecker et. al (2011), supports the idea of lexical retrieval failure in that individuals who have trouble recalling words have an idea of what they want to say but cannot retrieve the word. In this essay, I will be siding with Davis argument, as there should be no reason to develop and research life extension if we cannot make it available to everyone at once. For example, if we were able to take out a loan for life extension, then the time in life we have to repay for life extension would also increase. Life extension would also worsen our death, then it would better our death, as we are harmed comparatively on impending death. When you anticipate your future death to be in your early nineties, it may not sound as bad when there is no life extension available, but when you see a wealthy person live into their hundreds with life extension, it will make your death sound worse off if you died in your nineties.
