Malcolm Gladwell Outliers The Story Of Success Summary
In Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell an interesting point is made, this point is if
you work hard and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to
you desires (Gladwell 151).This is true in many of the stories told in the book Outliers: The Story of
Success by Malcolm Gladwell several famous people are talked about such as, The Beatles, Bill
Gates. But in this book several studies on education, parenting, and psychology are cited. We also
learn that there are many differences between what others may consider to be success, and what
Malcolm Gladwell considers success.
I would like to begin by discussing Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft. What opportunities allowed
him to build a company worth billions of dollars? How did he learn so much about how computers?
Did he have any advantages over other students at school? In the chapter The 10,000 Rule it is stated
that The idea that excellence at preforming a complex task requires a minimum level of practices
surfaces again and in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is the
magic number for true success: ten thousand hours (Gladwell 39 40). It takes this long because It
seems that it takes the brain that long to assimilate all that it needs to achieve true mastery (Gladwell
40). So where did Bill Gates get his ten thousand hours of experience before building Microsoft. Well
the answer is Lakeside, a private that catered

Our Little Sister Themes
Our Little Sister (Hirokazu Koreeda) Three sisters, Sachi, Yoshino and Chika live in a large house in
Kamakura. When their estranged father dies, they travel to the country to attend his funeral, where
they meet an adolescent half sister, Suzu. A deep bond is quickly formed between them and results in
inviting her, who is currently orphaned, to live with them. She accepts gladly and a new life begins for
the four sisters. Koreeda proves once more that he is the contemporary master of the family drama,
directing a film that is genuinely Japanese in its themes, pace and characters. He focuses on the human
interaction between the sisters, portraying their everyday lives, feelings and thoughts and all the little
moments that make us humans. Of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the vast intervals between the deliveries, Yoko cleans and makes tea, in one of Sono s favorite

curious about the parcels she is carrying and ends up reluctantly opening one of them. Sono directed a

anachronistic setting inside the spaceship. Furthermore, he entailed one of his recent favorite

Melanoma Research Paper
Melanoma
Melanoma is a very serious type of skin cancer and can be extremely dangerous if it s not taken care
of properly. Melanoma usually develops in the melanocyte cells when the skin has been exposed to
ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds or from being outside in the direct sunlight for too long or over
a long period of time. When unrepaired skin DNA becomes too damaged, it can trigger a mutation in
the cells which leads to the skin cells to rapidly multiply, turning into the cancerous growths. In some
cases, melanoma can form in the eyes, nose, mouth, genitals and, in rare situations, form in the
intestines (Mayo Clinic).
Normal moles will usually have an even color to it which will usually be tan, light or dark brown, pink

Skin cells normally push the new healthy cells toward the top to replace the old cells that need to be
replaced but, in some cases, when the cell DNA is too damaged then the new skin cells start to grow
rapidly which turn into cancerous growths. Doctors believe that the main lead cause of melanoma is
too much exposure to UV rays that comes mostly from sunlight and tanning beds (Cancer Research
UK). The Melanoma Research Foundation says that, approximately 90% of melanoma cases can be
linked to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays... Having blistering sunburns during early childhood can
increase the chances of getting melanoma, along with getting sunburns and excessive exposure later in
life can increase risks as well. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people who live in places
that have more sunlight like Florida, Arizona and California have a higher chance of getting skin
cancer. Lighter skinned people who live in the colder northern states can also get skin cancer and
some locations actually have a higher number of skin cancer patients. The healthy amount of exposure
to the sun is about 20 minutes to be able to get the right amount of Vitamin D required by the body,
after 20 minutes or so it would be smart to use sunscreen in order to avoid getting a sunburn. It is also
smart to avoid using a tanning booth or bed since it increases the risk of getting

Album Covers
Album covers are an important aspect in the music culture and industry. Many album covers vary,
depending on the artist itself and music genres. However, all album covers are meticulously designed
to represent an artist s vision and work from their music. Musicians will choose an album artwork that
represents them and their music. BADLANDS by Halsey and True Colors by Zedd are respectable
examples of artists who choose their covers based on their inspirations. These two album covers are
well thought of and beautifully created with depth and substance. Music is art, and so are album
covers. BADLANDS is the debut album of artist Halsey released in 2015. The name is referenced as a

The Last Days Of Ptolemy Grey Essay
In today s society elder people are not given much importance or care like they deserve because they
are old and as some people would say annoying. Often times we as younger generation believe that
older people just nag all the time and to get rid of that nagging we send them to nursing homes or to
an organization that will take care of them. Elder people do not realize what they are saying or doing
because a lot of them have health problem that can or cannot be treated, they are babies and as
youngest generation we do not see that or understand. Most older people have hard time taking care of
their self, cleaning their homes or surroundings and live in that dirty environment because they have
health problems and some do not even know what generation they are living in. in the book The Last
Days of Ptolemy Grey the author Walter Mosley presents a novel about an elder black man whose
having memory problem and cannot remember anyone in his family, friends and himself and his been
forgotten by his family. The author presents this novel in a very unique way that makes us realize that
we should care for elder people especially if it is our own family member because one day we will be
in their spot and we want our family or kids to take care of us and love us until the last breath we take.
This novel is about a 91 year old black man who s walking that final line between dementia and
reality. The character s name is Ptolemy Grey and he lives in a very violent south central L.A.

Testimony Death Of A Guatemalan Village By Victor Montejo
In, Testimony: Death of a Guatemalan Village, Victor Montejo describes events surrounding the
military régimes occurring throughout Guatemala. The book itself is an eyewitness account detailing
one instance of violence between the indigenous peoples village s civil patrol and the army. This
occurrence leads to the execution and imprisonment of many villagers. Even though the book is
mainly a testimony by one person, in which he discusses the personal conflicts and struggle between
himself and the army, the account is structured around the Guatemalan civil war and the conflict
between the government and civilians. The Guatemalan Civil War occurred between the years 1960 to

The army also rob and burn down parts of the village. In one case, a young man who was part of the
patrols is shot and as he laid dying, reveals that the uniform worn (in that particular day) by the army
was similar to the ones the guerrillas would wear, except that the guerrillas didn t cause any harm as
they walk through the village. This has a lot to say about how the civilians saw the government s
military, and how they saw their repressive state; being something they had to do without question due
to fear. Taking a look at the testimony alone, we can also see how society was effected. Out of
Montejo s brief background detailing the failures of the presidents and the absolute repression faced
by the civilians, we can conclude that the governments force to keep the guerillas unsuccessful was
limited and pushed society into rebellions. In other words, as the army continued to torture and
persecute the innocent, many found it necessary to fall into the hands of the guerrillas in order to
stamp out their oppression. Maria Lupe s account is similar to Montejos. She describes her hardships
as a house wife, working on a plantation of a rich land owner. Her husband worked for 50 cents per
day, and her payment was in food. She mentions moving closer to the north in a town

The Struggle In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
James Hurst, the author of The Scarlet Ibis, enhanced the quality of his already great story by adding
many different literary devices. In The Scarlet Ibis the main character, Doodle, was expected to live a
much shortened live due to his premature birth. He defies expectations and lives through his life
expectancy, although he was pronounced paralyzed. His brother had a hard time dealing with a
paralyzed brother. Doodle s brother tries his best to help him do everyday things, such as walk and
run. Nobody seemed to fully understand Doodle until the scarlet ibis showed up in the family s
backyard. Throughout this story, there are many different examples of symbolism, mood, and conflict
that all define the struggle that lays in front ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Symbolism is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent something else, according to
a video on Study Academy s website. An example of symbolism in The Scarlet Ibis reads Even death
did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it,
awed by its exotic beauty (Hurst 473). Doodle, much like the scarlet ibis, left the family in awe. After
Doodle s many accomplishments, their family could not believe what they had just seen. The author
tied these characters together to symbolize the strive for success Doodle wished to achieve. The scarlet
ibis had died almost immediately died after the family had seen it. James Hurst symbolized the two
characters by showing their similarities. Even though Doodle had lived to be at least 6, that is not a
long, fully lived life. As soon as Doodle started to overcome adversity, he died. Both of their deaths
were after a challenge was put upon them. The bird had fluttered to the ground after leaping off the
branch and never catching flight; Doodle was attempting to keep up with his brother when he fell.
Both were found under a tree, dead, without a chance of help. Symbolism, in this story, is effective
and improves the overall

Gay Rights And The Lgbt Community
Approximately four weeks ago, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history occurred not to far from
UCF. Patrons of Pulse nightclub, a gay nightclub in Orlando where massacred by Omar Mateen,
Mateen took the lives of forty nine individuals all because of their presence in a gay establishment.
This tragic incident wasn t the first attack on the LGBT community, but it s massive fatalities put
Congress under even more pressure to reform gun laws, gay rights, and suspected terrorist legislation.
As a political Science major, I take a special interest in the reactions among legislators after the
Orlando incident and believe there should be more equal protection for gay people under the law. The
two articles I will be analyzing, After Orlando, a Political Divide on Gay Rights Still Stands and Gay
rights and wrongs: How the Orlando massacre affects the fight for LGBT rights furthers the discourse
among the divide in Congress over gay rights.
My first article, After Orlando, a Political Divide on Gay Rights still Stands, published in the New
York Times focuses on the separate discourse of Democrats and Republicans in Congress. The writers
show it s time for the argument to exist using logos stating, Gays have surpassed Jews as the minority
group most often targeted in hate crimes, according to the FBI. (Peters and Alvarez) This statement
paired with the Orlando incident shows gays are in danger and need Congress to fight for them. With
Democrats trying to appeal to Republicans for

Hunting Should Be Allowed

Hunting Should Be Allowed Hunting is beneficial to our society and therefore should be allowed.
Historically human beings have been pursuing wild animals to provide their families with food,
clothing, and shelter. In modern times the need for hunting for survival has lessened because of the
development of animal husbandry and agriculture. There were times in history worldwide when
hunting became profitable and hunters began killing animals for their fur, skins, and meat. Then it
became necessary to put regulations in to effect to preserve wildlife as well as to somewhat appease
the critics who felt hunting should be illegal. Three main reasons why hunting should be allowed is to

The hunter will not only benefit by this knowledge within his hunt but also will know what animals to
pursue when hunting. Ill or deformed animals often give the hunter a sense of empathy when hunting.
These animals may not live very long and possibly spread its disease to the other animals. Sport
hunting should not be banned when examining information from this angle as it affects us all in
general. Hunting also provides excitement and a close connection with nature. While hunting, the
hunter often connects with nature while sitting in silence. He has the opportunity to observe his
surrounding and become familiar with his hunting ground. Knowing the plant life and growth rate of
the area crops is very important part to being a good hunter. This knowledge comes through
conservation of the land being managed for hunting. Through this land management, the plant and
animal life become more abundant. Hunting should be allowed and protesters should make the effort
to become more knowledge about the benefits of hunting. There are many environmental benefits to
society and to wildlife. The health of the animals is important to hunters as they reproduce and
replenish there will be ongoing game for hunting. Hunting is a privilege and privileges require
responsibility. Citizens must meet certain standards. The greatest threat to hunting in North America is

Remember The Titans Diversity
Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Virginia High School football team working
to come together during desegregation in the 1970s. Herman Boone, a black head coach, is hired to
lead the T.C Williams High School Football Team. The team formerly led by a white coach, Bill Yoast,
is better known by their nickname, The Titans. Both Boone and Yoast must work together to bring
their white and black players together in a time where segregation across racial lines in the south was
commonly accepted. Boone and Yoast are successful in doing this during the team s training camp,
only to return to find that bringing the team together would be only one of the challenges they faced.
We see both coaches work together and lead the team to an undefeated season that helped unite the
town and overcome its own racial strife. One of the movies overarching themes is team building
through adversity and using diversity to strengthen a team. We see this team building done by many
characters, most notably Yoast and Boone the two coaches. They are helped in this by the players
themselves as well. A white player named Gerry Bertier and a black player name Julius Campbell.
Both players are initially determined to side along racial lines during their team building experience at
camp. Yoast and Boone help set the example for the players as Yoast swallow his pride and accepts a
lesser position on the coaching staff than what he previously held. The example set by Yoast helps

The Shean Use Of Sleep In Shakespeare s Sonnet 27
Shakespeare s Sonnet 27 describes how despite the speaker s physical exhaustion, he cannot sleep
because his mind remains active with thoughts of his lover. In this sonnet, Shakespeare uses diction,
imagery, and metaphor in order to express his complete devotion to his sweetheart.
In the first quatrain, the speaker quickly attempts to sleep, saying he is with travel tired (2). The word
travel indicates that the speaker wants to rest because he journeyed all day long, but the
Shakespearean use of travel also holds the connotation of hard work or something painful. The
speaker also begins to play off of this word choice by using imagery of traveling to convey how his
active brain prevents him from falling asleep, saying But then begins a journey in my head / To work
my mind, when body s work s expired (3 4). The image of a journey depicts the nature of the speaker s
thoughts; random, trivial wonderings do not keep him awake, but rather, his mind focuses on a sole
objective and continues along a distinct path. The use of the journey as a metaphor also implies that
like the agony physically traveling creates, his wandering mind endures similarly grueling obstacles
while trying to reach his destination. This comparison produces irony because although the speaker
wants to sleep to escape the exhaustion of the day, he only encounters an equally strenuous burden.
The second quatrain reveals the speaker s destination and further explores the hardship he meets on
his metaphorical journey. The speaker continues the traveling imagery by saying his thoughts Intend a
zealous pilgrimage to thee (6), with thee referring to his lover to whom he addresses the poem. The
description of the pilgrimage as zealous further strengthens the parallels between literal travel and his
thinking, illustrating the speaker s passionate feelings about his lover, and his determination to make
the taxing journey indicates his complete devotion to his partner. The use of the word pilgrimage also
intensifies this sense of devotion; because people often go on pilgrimages for religious place, the
speaker describes his commitment to his lover as strong as one to religion. The speaker then
introduces the image of darkness by saying,

The Importance Of A Plutocracy In America
All my life I was always told to grow up and become rich, so you can live a great life. As I grew older
I realized that dream would never happen. I also started to realize that corporations in the United
States were the real rulers. Corporations control so many aspects of the common person s life. They
don t realize that they control everything from political races to fast food chains. America has always
been known to be a fair democracy, but I believe that America is a plutocracy.
What is a plutocracy you may ask? A plutocracy is the rule by the rich. The rich in this country may
seem to live great luxurious life that everyone wants, but when you take a good look at the U.S you
slowly realize that this country is corrupt and influenced by the rich. The rich control many
corporations here in the country. In an interview with Ronald P. Formisano; Donald Dorling states,
Ten large fast food chains in the US pay wages so low that they drain federal funds, because their
workers families qualify for public assistance. A fifth of all families with someone working in a fast
food restaurant live below the poverty line (Dorling). This quote states that the pay per hour is so low
that they drain the government funds because they are forced to live on the welfare. Why do these
families and people live terrible lives? These corporations are controlled by a CEO, which means it is
controlled by one person; this person can control what is payed to its employees because it s a private

The Environmental Protection Agency ( Epa ) Should Limit...
The government should limit and regulate carbon dioxide, CO2, emission because it is causing
devastating changes to earth, the only planet known to sustain life. The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) should provide stricter regulation of carbon emission in such a way to reduce the
affects it has on the earth. If we cannot reduce carbon dioxide emissions or begin regulating carbon
dioxide emissions, we will cause irreversible changes to the earth. The government needs to start
regulating carbon dioxide emission, in order to decrease greenhouse gases and to protect our precious
ocean water, and prevent devastating climate changes. With the ever increasing rise of carbon dioxide
(CO2) we will lead changes of the oceans natural PH and increase temperatures globally.
Without the regulation of carbon dioxide the excess CO2 that is emitted by civilians and companies,
disrupts mother nature s carbon cycle. The carbon cycle, in simple words, is the process in which
carbon and CO2 is recycled through earth s environment, so it is no surprise that we pollute the ocean
as much as we pollute the sky because they are both part of the environment we live on. Global
Warming has enormous effects on the ocean, up to 30 40% of the carbon dioxide we release into the
atmosphere gets dissolved into oceans, rivers, and lakes (Millero, Frank J. (1995)). The new intake of
CO2 into the bodies of water reacts with the water to form carbonic acid, which starts a process called

Class Differences In Sociological Analysis
Social structures are limitations that affect the lives of individuals and groups in the society. Social
structures such as class, gender and ethnicity are the limitations that society has to cope with in one
way or another (Lawson et al, 2002). Class (upper class, middle class, and poor) is a the most
favoured limitation that influence the lives of individuals and groups. Social class is the key source of
economic and material inequality and is found in all societies (Marron et al, 2011).

Persuasive Essay On Paying For College
Paying for College When entering high school many students already know what they want to do
when they grow up ; however, many students do not know how they will pay for the college education
to get them there. Some students will strive for the best grades possible to earn scholarship money to
have college funded for them, others will mess around, and end up wishing they had tried harder, and
having to pay for college themselves. Those students will have to have a job during college to be able
to afford books, tuition, and any other fun things they might wish to do while they are away from
home at college. College students working to pay for college tuition or pay off college debt have less
entitlement, more responsibility, and take greater pride in their education; however, college students
who have their college fully funded may feel more entitled around the college campus, have less focus
towards studies, and spend more time at parties, finally they will never understand how much their
education was truly worth. While each student may receive the same education, the values and
attitudes each student has can be even more valuable than the college education itself. Being a young
college student takes a lot of dedication and responsibility; however, being a college student and
working a job to pay for college at the same time takes even more responsibility and dedication.
Students must take accountability for themselves, being able to turn in assignments, study for

Gay Rights Australia
MHIS109 Analysis
1) Gay rights have come a long way, but there s more to do by Greg Waters, Sydney Morning Herald
(2018), outlines a national journey but also personal journey of the author. Waters highlights how as a
nation, Australia has come so far since the 20th century in terms of gay rights, yet there is still more
work that needs to be done, to ensure all discrimination stops. Waters uses evidence from 1972 to
highlight how inhumanely gay people were treated, including being dismissed from employment for
being gay and that protestors against these practices were not looked upon favourably . In 2018
however, a big win for gay rights was the legalisation of gay marriage in 2017. Yet, he argues there is
still so far to go, as in 2018, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willett argues that the world view has changed, with the help of so many activists, bringing about
fundamental changes in society s attitudes. Willett talks about the changes made up until 1997,
however since then attitudes and legislation relating to homosexual people has become even more
understanding and tolerant. In the early 20th century, gay and lesbian people were marginalised to the
point of invisibility and demonization . He argues that before 1975, homosexual laws were some of
the harshest laws that the government introduced. This was because there was a general sense of
homophobia after the 1960 s, calling homosexual behaviour, sexual depravity. He cites Barry York
demanding conjugal rights for prisoners to prevent prisons from being breeding grounds for
homosexuality . He also draws on the homosexual attitudes in the paper, such as the Tribune in 1973
which states how John Sendy wanted the government to oppose gay liberation . However, Willett also
uses evidence of people trying to change this law and fight for gay rights, such as Whitlam in 1970,
who expressed support for decriminalisation of homosexual acts, and how in 1972, Lex Watson set out
law reform abolishing all laws regarding discrimination against gay couples and sexual orientation,
race and marriage status. He demanded public education campaign in schools to eradicate anti gay
attitudes. Willett suggests these actions helped to reshape Australian society creating more
understanding. By 1997 there was wider public acceptance and tolerance of homosexual people, with
Mardi Gras parade being popularised, the decriminalisation of male homosexual behaviour,
acceptance of lesbians and the recognition of gay custody rights in families and much stronger anti
discrimination laws, all creating a powerful sense

Summary Of A Room Of One s Own By Virginia Woolf
While searching through history for documented women achievements, Virginia Woolf decided to
speak about how they had way less opportunities than men throughout A Room of One s Own .
Through utilizing diction, imagery, and pathos, Woolf expressed her views on the treatment of women
in the early 20th century while delivering a lecture at a university. She achieved this opening up with
Mary Beton, a fictional character, being forced off the grass and denied access to the library. This was
used to show the different treatments men and women got, as the female only university also had
awful food in comparison to the college with men. The next day, she went to the museum and
discovered that much of the information written about women were done

John Donne And Cecile Day Lewis
Since definition of love and its representation varies person to person and in the past it has already
been represented in various ways, which leads one to presume that language is insufficient to represent
love. However, it is evident that the language has proved to be sufficient enough to not only analyze,
dissect and explain the feelings of love from so many angles including biologically. Subversions of
conventions of love is not the matter of insufficiency of language but a matter of how a poet
experiences love or how a poet chooses to express those experiences.
It is mainly the poet s era and life experiences that dictate how he/she represents love. Thomas Wyatt,
John Donne and Cecile Day Lewis are good examples of how life experiences can determine the poets
divergence of traditional courtly and pastoral love. An abreast analysis of the above poets lives and
their works allow us to draw parallels between their life experiences and their subversions of
conventions of love.
Thomas Wyatt s subversion of courtly love was influenced by his intimate relation with the women.
Sir Thomas Wyatt, an English ambassador suffered from his wife s infidelity and his mistress s
marriage with his king and later her execution. Due to his position of being an ambassador of England
left him no choice but to represent love in courtly and patriarchal manner. Wyatt was deeply affected
by the infidelity of his first wife and the execution of his mistress at the hands of the monarch. For

In my last post I discussed my visit to New Bern to select and photograph homes. The next part of my
research process was to select houses that I would analyze in Williamsburg. Initially I thought I would
be able to compare homes of very similar ages but this turned out not to be the case. Although I had
selected the oldest homes in New Bern, most were still built significantly later than those of
Williamsburg. The homes in New Bern were built in the latter part of the 18th century, while many
homes in Williamsburg were built in the early or mid 18th century. Additionally, the New Bern homes
were all grand in size, most having two or more stories. In contrast, the majority of homes I researched
in Colonial Williamsburg were more modest in size. After choosing several homes in Colonial
Williamsburg, I again met with Mr. Klee, the architectural historian for the Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation, who I discussed my findings with. For starters, I had hoped to compare the general ...

Theme Of Mending Wall And Birches
To know the meaning of these two poems, Mending Wall and Birches , we first must understand what
are these poems about on a literal level. Mending Wall tells about the story of a rock wall, that is build
to separate two properties (the speaker and his neighbor) in the countryside, and something is always
destroying it. On the other hand, we have the poem of Birches and the speaker talks about how he
does not like how the birches bend because of the storm so he imagines that children are the ones who
climb the birch tree as high as they can and then when they have reached the point where the birch can
support their weight any more, they bend the birch because the kick their legs and pull the tree down
to one side. With this information we can discuss and try to understand the deeper meaning of these
two poems and how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the poem of Mending Wall , Frost uses sound to enrich and enhances his theme/meaning of the
poem. He writes in a soft and harmonious way, almost in a reflective tone. He enriches more his theme
of separation/barrier building to give empathy towards the speaker and the way he asks himself, why
is the stonewall still there separating both the speaker and his neighbor. Before I built a Wall/I d ask to
know/What I was walling in or walling out,/And to whom I was like to give offense. However, there is
the implication that something even deeper is going on and Frost uses a harsh tone for it. When he
inscribes a certain type of dialogue between the speaker and his neighbor, the neighbor s response is
very harsh and discordant. My apple trees will never get across/And eat the cones under his pines, I
tell him/He only says/Good fences make good neighbors . With this response the reader can connect
with the speaker and see how harsh the speaker s neighbor response is. Here we can see the theme of
this poem is that a respectful distance between neighbors is the recipe for harmonious relationships:
Good fences make good neighbors .

The Sins of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter is a study of the effects of sin on the hearts and minds of the
main characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth. Hester, Dimmesdale, and
Chillingworth. Sin strengthens Hester, humanizes Dimmesdale, and turns Chillingworth into a demon.
Hester Prynne s sin was adultery. This sin was regarded very seriously by the Puritans, and was often
punished by death. Hester s punishment was to endure a public shaming on a scaffold for three hours
and wear a scarlet letter A on her chest for the rest of her life in the town. Although Hawthorne does

was the one virtue which I might have held fast, and did hold fast, through all extremity save when thy

Even though Hester s sin is the one the book is titled after and centered around, it is not nearly the
worst sin committed. Hester learns from her sin, and grows strong, a direct result of her punishment.
The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair,

Advantages Of Energy Conservation Essay
Discussion Modern human civilization depends on large amounts of energy. Energy consumption is
not evenly spread throughout the world. A handful of countries consume a majority of the world s
produced energy. The 5 largest annual energy consumers in the world are China, United States,
European Union, Russia, and India. Solutions for Energy Consumption Replacing fossil fuels with
alternative fuel sources is the main solution to climate change. Cleaner energy sources will reduce the
amount of pollutants released in the environment during the production of energy. Increasing the
efficiency of energy consuming appliances will reduce the amount of energy that is wasted and

Space Exploration Of Space
Space exploration has brought with it numerous advances and changes to the world. Included in these
changes are the significant impacts to America s cultural landscape. America s cultural perception has
been shaped by fear, patriotism, and a division between the Country. Throughout Margaret Lazarus
Dean s memoir Leaving Orbit, she explored many of these changes as they happened throughout the
almost sixty years that American s, and the world, have been leaving Earth. Dean delves into the
initial launches throughout the 50 s and 60 s, describing both the unease and loyalty to country that
drove space flight forward and allowed for the cultural landscape American s live in today.
One of the first cultural changes that came with the space program occurred before America s first
capsule even left the Earth. The American people s fright over what the Soviets could do with this new
technology of space travel was the driving factor into pushing for space flight. Fear grew
exponentially in the late fifties and early sixties as the first Russian satellites were launched and the
possibilities of what the Soviet Union could do with those capabilities weighed heavily on American
minds. [T]he degree to which Americans were shaken by Sputnik is all but incomprehensible to

While in pursuit, two soldiers in General McClellan s 75,500 man Army of the Potomac, stumbled

It is often said that history is written by the victors. Prior to the Paris Peace Conference and the
drafting of the Treaty of Versailles, one of the issues debated amongst the victorious Allies was
whether or not Germany should be allowed to retain their overseas protectorates. In the last months of
the war, the South African government, which was tied to Great Britain, published a Blue Book
concerning the vicious nature of German colonial rule in German South West Africa, the territory now
known as Namibia. In response to what they claimed to be false accusations, the German Colonial
Office published their own White Book in 1919 that addressed and refuted the charges made against
them. However, as historian Ulrike Lindner notes, The cruelty ... Show more content on

Elements of the recruitment and retention plan will be partnerships with colleges and universities,

Romeo and Juliet A True Aristotelian Tragedy Essay
A true Aristotelian tragedy is considered to contain characters with one single flaw. Characters such as
these display actions that wholly influence the outcome of the tragedy. William Shakespeare does just
that in the writing of Romeo and Juliet. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet shall be considered an
Aristotelian Tragedy as opposed to a tragic poem. This is true because every aspect of this poem
adheres to the definition of Aristotelian. This poem should be considered an Aristotelian Tragedy
because Romeo and Juliet committed their own flaw, which causes a chain reaction leading to their

As Thrasher has previously stated: It is too perfect and too passionate for their world (Page). He is
saying how Romeo and Juliet think they are living in their own prefect world where nothing bad can
happen to them. Soon reality will strike, and there will be no turning back. Furthermore, since they are
teenagers who think they are in love, they do not understand what mistakes they are truly making by
continuing with their romantic relationship. Romeo soon takes his love to the extreme when he
continues to show his undying love for Juliet. In their reality, he believes For fear of that, I still will
stay with thee, / And never from this palace of dim night/Depart again (V, iii, 115 117). Here, he is
bestowing the ultimate sacrifice for Juliet. He does this to be with his one and only love for the rest of
his life. This shows weakness on Romeo s part because for Juliet, Romeo is willingly paying the
ultimate price, which is death. Rite then and there, Romeo commits a behemothic mistake, his suicide.
Juliet, on the other hand, shows her weakness in her romance by indubitably wanting to marry Romeo
the night she meets him. This is nothing but an immature and somewhat adolescent move because she
clearly did not think before she made this irrational decision. Moreover, she seemingly gets so caught
up in teenage love, that she does not want the feeling to ever end. She especially experiences this

We also learn that there are many differences between what others may consider to be success, and what Malcolm Gladwell considers success. I would like to begin by discussing Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft. What opportunities allowed him to build a company worth billions of dollars? How did he learn so much about how computers? Did he have any advantages over other students at school? In the chapter The 10,000 Rule it is stated that The idea that excellence at preforming a complex task requires a minimum level of practices surfaces again and in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number for true success: ten thousand hours (Gladwell 39 40). It takes this long because It seems that it takes the brain that long to assimilate all that it needs to achieve true mastery (Gladwell 40). So where did Bill Gates get his ten thousand hours of experience before building Microsoft. Well the answer is Lakeside, a private that catered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This has a lot to say about how the civilians saw the government s military, and how they saw their repressive state; being something they had to do without question due to fear. Taking a look at the testimony alone, we can also see how society was effected. Out of Montejo s brief background detailing the failures of the presidents and the absolute repression faced by the civilians, we can conclude that the governments force to keep the guerillas unsuccessful was limited and pushed society into rebellions. In other words, as the army continued to torture and persecute the innocent, many found it necessary to fall into the hands of the guerrillas in order to stamp out their oppression. An example of symbolism in The Scarlet Ibis reads Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty (Hurst 473). Doodle, much like the scarlet ibis, left the family in awe. After Doodle s many accomplishments, their family could not believe what they had just seen. The author tied these characters together to symbolize the strive for success Doodle wished to achieve. The scarlet ibis had died almost immediately died after the family had seen it. James Hurst symbolized the two characters by showing their similarities. Even though Doodle had lived to be at least 6, that is not a long, fully lived life. As soon as Doodle started to overcome adversity, he died. Both of their deaths were after a challenge was put upon them. Historically human beings have been pursuing wild animals to provide their families with food, clothing, and shelter. In modern times the need for hunting for survival has lessened because of the development of animal husbandry and agriculture. There were times in history worldwide when hunting became profitable and hunters began killing animals for their fur, skins, and meat. Both Boone and Yoast must work together to bring their white and black players together in a time where segregation across racial lines in the south was commonly accepted. • 16. The Shean Use Of Sleep In Shakespeare s Sonnet 27 Shakespeare s Sonnet 27 describes how despite the speaker s physical exhaustion, he cannot sleep because his mind remains active with thoughts of his lover. In this sonnet, Shakespeare uses diction, imagery, and metaphor in order to express his complete devotion to his sweetheart. In the first quatrain, the speaker quickly attempts to sleep, saying he is with travel tired (2). The word travel indicates that the speaker wants to rest because he journeyed all day long, but the Shakespearean use of travel also holds the connotation of hard work or something painful. The speaker also begins to play off of this word choice by using imagery of traveling to convey how his active brain prevents him from falling asleep, saying But then begins a journey in my head / To work my mind, when body s work s expired (3 4). The image of a journey depicts the nature of the speaker s thoughts; random, trivial wonderings do not keep him awake, but rather, his mind focuses on a sole objective and continues along a distinct path. The use of the journey as a metaphor also implies that like the agony physically traveling creates, his wandering mind endures similarly grueling obstacles while trying to reach his destination. This comparison produces irony because although the speaker wants to sleep to escape the exhaustion of the day, he only encounters an equally strenuous burden. The second quatrain reveals the speaker s destination and further explores the hardship he meets on his metaphorical journey. The speaker continues the traveling imagery by saying his thoughts Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee (6), with thee referring to his lover to whom he addresses the poem. The description of the pilgrimage as zealous further strengthens the parallels between literal travel and his thinking, illustrating the speaker s passionate feelings about his lover, and his determination to make the taxing journey indicates his complete devotion to his partner. The use of the word pilgrimage also intensifies this sense of devotion; because people often go on pilgrimages for religious place, the speaker describes his commitment to his lover as strong as one to religion. The speaker then introduces the image of darkness by saying, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The government should limit and regulate carbon dioxide, CO2, emission because it is causing devastating changes to earth, the only planet known to sustain life. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should provide stricter regulation of carbon emission in such a way to reduce the affects it has on the earth. If we cannot reduce carbon dioxide emissions or begin regulating carbon dioxide emissions, we will cause irreversible changes to the earth. The government needs to start regulating carbon dioxide emission, in order to decrease greenhouse gases and to protect our precious ocean water, and prevent devastating climate changes. With the ever increasing rise of carbon dioxide (CO2) we will lead changes of the oceans natural PH and increase temperatures globally. Without the regulation of carbon dioxide the excess CO2 that is emitted by civilians and companies, disrupts mother nature s carbon cycle. The carbon cycle, in simple words, is the process in which carbon and CO2 is recycled through earth s environment, so it is no surprise that we pollute the ocean as much as we pollute the sky because they are both part of the environment we live on. Global Warming has enormous effects on the ocean, up to 30 40% of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere gets dissolved into oceans, rivers, and lakes (Millero, Frank J. (1995)). In 2018 however, a big win for gay rights was the legalisation of gay marriage in 2017. Yet, he argues there is still so far to go, as in 2018, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Willett argues that the world view has changed, with the help of so many activists, bringing about fundamental changes in society s attitudes. Willett talks about the changes made up until 1997, however since then attitudes and legislation relating to homosexual people has become even more understanding and tolerant. In the early 20th century, gay and lesbian people were marginalised to the point of invisibility and demonization . He argues that before 1975, homosexual laws were some of the harshest laws that the government introduced. This was because there was a general sense of homophobia after the 1960 s, calling homosexual behaviour, sexual depravity. He cites Barry York demanding conjugal rights for prisoners to prevent prisons from being breeding grounds for homosexuality . He also draws on the homosexual attitudes in the paper, such as the Tribune in 1973 which states how John Sendy wanted the government to oppose gay liberation . However, Willett also uses evidence of people trying to change this law and fight for gay rights, such as Whitlam in 1970, who expressed support for decriminalisation of homosexual acts, and how in 1972, Lex Watson set out law reform abolishing all laws regarding discrimination against gay couples and sexual orientation, race and marriage status. He demanded public education campaign in schools to eradicate anti gay attitudes. Willett suggests these actions helped to reshape Australian society creating more understanding. By 1997 there was wider public acceptance and tolerance of homosexual people, with Mardi Gras parade being popularised, the decriminalisation of male homosexual behaviour, acceptance of lesbians and the recognition of gay custody rights in families and much stronger anti discrimination laws, all creating a powerful sense ... Summary Of A Room Of One s Own By Virginia Woolf While searching through history for documented women achievements, Virginia Woolf decided to speak about how they had way less opportunities than men throughout A Room of One s Own . Through utilizing diction, imagery, and pathos, Woolf expressed her views on the treatment of women in the early 20th century while delivering a lecture at a university. She achieved this opening up with Mary Beton, a fictional character, being forced off the grass and denied access to the library. This was used to show the different treatments men and women got, as the female only university also had awful food in comparison to the college with men. • 28. John Donne And Cecile Day Lewis Since definition of love and its representation varies person to person and in the past it has already been represented in various ways, which leads one to presume that language is insufficient to represent love. However, it is evident that the language has proved to be sufficient enough to not only analyze, dissect and explain the feelings of love from so many angles including biologically. Subversions of conventions of love is not the matter of insufficiency of language but a matter of how a poet experiences love or how a poet chooses to express those experiences. It is mainly the poet s era and life experiences that dictate how he/she represents love. Thomas Wyatt, John Donne and Cecile Day Lewis are good examples of how life experiences can determine the poets divergence of traditional courtly and pastoral love. An abreast analysis of the above poets lives and their works allow us to draw parallels between their life experiences and their subversions of conventions of love. Thomas Wyatt s subversion of courtly love was influenced by his intimate relation with the women. Sir Thomas Wyatt, an English ambassador suffered from his wife s infidelity and his mistress s marriage with his king and later her execution. Due to his position of being an ambassador of England left him no choice but to represent love in courtly and patriarchal manner. The next part of my research process was to select houses that I would analyze in Williamsburg. Initially I thought I would be able to compare homes of very similar ages but this turned out not to be the case. Although I had selected the oldest homes in New Bern, most were still built significantly later than those of Williamsburg. The homes in New Bern were built in the latter part of the 18th century, while many homes in Williamsburg were built in the early or mid 18th century. Additionally, the New Bern homes were all grand in size, most having two or more stories. In contrast, the majority of homes I researched in Colonial Williamsburg were more modest in size. Mending Wall tells about the story of a rock wall, that is build to separate two properties (the speaker and his neighbor) in the countryside, and something is always destroying it. On the other hand, we have the poem of Birches and the speaker talks about how he does not like how the birches bend because of the storm so he imagines that children are the ones who climb the birch tree as high as they can and then when they have reached the point where the birch can support their weight any more, they bend the birch because the kick their legs and pull the tree down to one side. In the poem of Mending Wall , Frost uses sound to enrich and enhances his theme/meaning of the poem. He writes in a soft and harmonious way, almost in a reflective tone. He enriches more his theme of separation/barrier building to give empathy towards the speaker and the way he asks himself, why is the stonewall still there separating both the speaker and his neighbor. Before I built a Wall/I d ask to know/What I was walling in or walling out,/And to whom I was like to give offense. However, there is the implication that something even deeper is going on and Frost uses a harsh tone for it. When he inscribes a certain type of dialogue between the speaker and his neighbor, the neighbor s response is very harsh and discordant. My apple trees will never get across/And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him/He only says/Good fences make good neighbors . With this response the reader can connect with the speaker and see how harsh the speaker s neighbor response is. Here we can see the theme of this poem is that a respectful distance between neighbors is the recipe for harmonious relationships: Good fences make good neighbors . ... Included in these changes are the significant impacts to America s cultural landscape. America s cultural perception has been shaped by fear, patriotism, and a division between the Country. Throughout Margaret Lazarus Dean s memoir Leaving Orbit, she explored many of these changes as they happened throughout the almost sixty years that American s, and the world, have been leaving Earth. Dean delves into the initial launches throughout the 50 s and 60 s, describing both the unease and loyalty to country that drove space flight forward and allowed for the cultural landscape American s live in today. One of the first cultural changes that came with the space program occurred before America s first capsule even left the Earth. The American people s fright over what the Soviets could do with this new technology of space travel was the driving factor into pushing for space flight. Fear grew exponentially in the late fifties and early sixties as the first Russian satellites were launched and the possibilities of what the Soviet Union could do with those capabilities weighed heavily on American minds.
