A cold war is a conflict of ideas, an argument more than a fight. In a cold war bombs are not dropped,
bullets are not fired. The United States and the Soviet Union fought such a war during the years 1945
through 1991. The United States developed a policy of containment toward the Soviet Union after
Winston Churchill s Iron Curtain speech. The speech highlighted the difference in philosophy of
government, the US was a Democracy and the Soviet Union was a communist nation.These
differences helped heat up the Cold War.
It all started on March 5th, 1946, Winston Churchill had just got done telling his speech in retaliation
of Stalin s speech. Winston s speech was about how communists were rising to power and how
Eastern Europe was divided into two, calling it the iron curtain. Churchill also called on US to help
keep Stalin from caging any more nations behind the iron curtain of communist dictatorship and
abuse. These two speeches by Stalin and Churchill set the mood for the cold war. The rivalry that
