Glucose transporters (GLUTs) facilitate the uptake of glucose in cells. The main GLUTs are GLUT1, GLUT2, GLUT3, GLUT4, and GLUT5. GLUT1 transports glucose in red blood cells and various tissues. GLUT2 has low affinity and transports glucose in the liver and pancreatic beta cells. GLUT3 transports glucose into brain cells with high affinity. GLUT4 mediates insulin-dependent glucose uptake in muscle and fat cells. GLUT5 transports fructose. SGluT cotransports glucose and sodium from the intestinal and renal lumens into cells.
