Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have existed since the 1970s, when the first GMO bacteria resistant to antibiotics was created. Since then, scientists have genetically modified plants, animals, and other organisms. The two most common types of GMOs are foods like corn, soybeans, and canola that are modified for herbicide resistance or increased nutrients, and medicines like insulin or vaccines that are produced using genetically modified bacteria. While GMOs may increase yields and benefit farmers, they also raise environmental and health concerns.
