Exploring Digital Cultures W12: The Wikipedia DebateNoNeedforInk
Week 12 Wikipedia-centric presentation on:
-Clay Shirky's Personal Motivation Meets Collaborative Production
-Andrew Keen's Cult of the Amateur
This presentation walks through Shirky's points, explaining how Wikipedia is held as the ideal model of collaborative production in today's Web 2.0 world. However, it also goes beyond the readings in introducing the WikiScanner and all it has uncovered. This implies that the real issue may not be what Keen calls the "endless digital forest of mediocrity", but the fact that "Wikipedia entries are being used as a medium for corporate propaganda".

The famous educational philosopher, John Dewey, stated “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.’ Maker education involves hands-on and experiential activities. Learning can occur through the act of making but having learners reflect on their making experiences increases the likelihood of learning. It is not left to chance.

We describe a hybrid approach for access to digital objects contained within forensic disk images extracted from physical media. This approach includes the use of emulation-as-a-service (EaaS) to provide web-accessible virtual environments for materials that may not render or execute accuratelyon modern hardware and software, and the use of digital forensics software libraries to produce web-accessible file system views to support single-file access and provide visualizations of the file system.
