Forces and Their Effects
What makes the ball
Move?
The man pushes the ball
with his racket.
What makes the car
move?
The man pushes the
car.
What makes the wagon
move?
The child pulls the
wagon.
In the above pictures the objects are being moved by a push or a pull.
A push or a pull acting on objects is called a force.
You cannot see a
force but you can see
what it does.
You can also feel the
effect of a force on
your body.
The picture show a number of forces in action .
work in pairs. Diced whether the force is a pull or
push. In tow minutes please.

How do we measure force?
• We use an instrument called a spring balance
known as a force meter or a newton meter.
• A newton (N) is the unit that describes the size of
a force.
1.Which of these is the best way to measure a force?
A. using a force meter
B. using a ruler
C. using a thermometer
2.Forces can be:
A. pushes only
B. pulls only
C. pushes and pulls
3. What is the unit of force called?
A. the newton, n
B. the newton, N
C. the neutron, N
What can a force do?
A force can
make an object move.
A force can make
a moving object stop.
A force can
change the
direction
of a moving
object.
A force can
change the
shape
of an object.
forces can
do nothing
to the object
when and how ??!!
Force and Net Force
• when that the net force equals zero.
• Net force is the total force on an object.
• In other words: when the forces acting on an
object are balanced .
But in one case: balanced forces on a object
Can make the object move……in case
what??!!!!!
Unbalanced
• If the forces acting on a body are
"unbalanced" this means that there is a "net"
or "resultant" force.
• The object will do one of the following:
1.Speed Up
2.Slow Down
3.Change the Direction of its Motion
4.change the shape
HMM…. Can you see the unbalanced force here?
Some of the forces are more obvious than others and
they can be broken down in to two different types:
In pictures below state what
1. type of force (tension, friction, elastic, gravitational,
electrostatic, magnetic).
2. contact force or an action-at-a-distance force.
Group working
With your group(3 member each group ) use
thesis words to answer the question 1-5(a-k)
in next slide :
(non contact – contact - Electrostatic –
Gravitational- Force –Magnetic- Elastic –
Friction- Tension)
Each term may be used more than once.
You have 5 minutes to finish your work.
1) A(n) ………a………. is a push or a pull that acts on an object.
2) ………b………. forces only have an effect on objects that they
touch.
3) ………c………. forces act on an object without touching them.
4) …………d……. works to slow down or stop motion due to
surfaces rubbing against each other. ………e………. force is
experienced by a rope when it is pulled at either end.
………f………. force is exerted when a spring returns to its normal
shape. These are examples of ……g…………. forces.
5) A(n)………h………. force pulls objects toward each other because
they have mass. A(n) ………i………. force pulls or pushes on
metals such as iron. A(n) ……j…………. force causes pushing and
pulling forces due to differences in charge of the small particles
that make up matter. These are examples of ………k……….
