This document contains a student teacher's portfolio submission for a field study course. It includes an observation guide for surveying available learning materials at a cooperating school. The student analyzed benefits of surveying materials in advance such as saving time and money. They reflected on enjoying making visual aids most and difficulties planning exciting activities for students. Tips provided for teachers include considering topic, student interests, and school rules when preparing materials. A graphic organizer shows learning resources for a direct variation topic that are available, may be purchased, or will be made.

Who are the mooc educators and what are their job tasks? A multi case study Tina Papathoma
This study explores who the people involved in massive open online courses (moocs) are and how they describe their tasks in those courses. Data were gathered through a multiple case study involving interviews with 28 people involved in moocs. Analysis shows that educators come from different backgrounds (i.e. academics, learning designers, PhD students) with different types of expertise such as
teaching, subject matter expertise and learning design expertise. Educators reported that they often collaborated in the mooc process (i.e. design, run, facilitate). However, their roles were not fixed and they often moved from one role to another. This entailed taking different responsibilities for which they may not have the expertise to work on. Some of the most common jobs educators were involved in were setting the course objectives, creation of course materials, pedagogical decisions on how the course will go live, decisions on purchasing copyright material, video presenting and video editing. Educators reported that they often learned these tasks in practice as training was either limited or absent. In order to manage the challenges they faced in the mooc process they collaborated with each other (sociocultural knowledge) and they self-regulated by seeking advice from experts as well as observing how other moocs have run. The role expectations for educators in moocs may be very demanding. They may need to acquire a range of skills that were not required in their past experience, and they may need to collaborate with others and share each other’s expertise. Institutions, senior management and platforms may assist in that.
This post is based on my field study that I did conduct last three months for the year 2014. You may seem not to approve some of this idea, but please correct me if I am wrong. Most of the things contain here were based on my own opinion. I am very welcome to some ideas that you may share on this subject matter. Thank you and hope it will be a help for those people in search for the same studies.

First I would start off with we are always learning and figuring out how different techniques and ideas work with different students and staff.
Create a planning routine and structure that works for you and your students. Use a specific planning process, to ensure that your lessons are aligned to the standards and include only what is meaningful and purposeful.
Create an organization system for keeping track of your lessons, where you’ve been, and where you’re going. Websites and apps (e.g. Pinterest, Teacher Plan) also allow you to visually see lessons and map out your lesson plans.
Pull out materials that you’ll need for the next day’s lessons before you go home for the day. Or, organize the weeks’ materials in different totes so that all you need is to pull out what you need when you’re ready.
Have proactive measures in place to diffuse difficult situations before they happen.
Designate areas in your room for specific items such as: completed student work, work for absent students, papers to be used each day, papers that need copied, items needing lamination, etc

An Observation/ Survey Guide
1. Are there learning resources useful for your topic in the resource center you visited?
2. Are the available materials appropriate for your target grade/year level?
3. List down those that can be useful for your topic.
4. What other materials can you make? (Like flash cards, posters, cut-outs,
transparencies, etc.)?
OBSERVATION NOTES
Name of the School Observed: JH Cerilles State College Dumingag Campus
Location of the School: Caridad, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur
Date of Visit: March 07, 2016
1. Yes, there are many useful resources in the library which is needed in my topic.
2. Yes, they are appropriate to my target learners which is the Grade 9 class.
3. These materials are Math books where information are laid and also a computer with
internet connection where they can browse for related facts about the topic.
4. Aside from those materials, I need to make cartolina strips and cut-outs, illustrations
on a Manila Paper and different other materials relevant to the activity that I will
give them.
3. My Analysis
Give at least three benefits of doing a survey of available materials before making your own
materials? Explain each.
1. Save time, money and effort. If you already know what things are needed to make, you
will no longer waste your time money and effort for it to be done. Having survey will
surely give you information about the things needed to be prepared. Thus, you will be
able to allocate budget and save your time, money and effort.
2. Gives us a sense of preparedness. If you already know that the materials needed are
already available, then there will be no problem. However, if you know that there are
many materials needed to be prepared then you will prepare yourself to allocate time
for the making of these materials. You will also prepare money for it. You will also
prepare yourself in different unexpected circumstances that may come in preparing
those materials.
3. Give us guide. Knowing the things and needed to be done is a guide for every teacher
or individual. It is a crucial thing that a teacher should have. Having it, a teacher will
be guided on the things to be done.
4. My Reflections
1. Which of the materials did you like making the most? Why?
Among the materials, making visual aids (information on a Manila Paper) is
what I like making the most. Since high school, I’m taught on how to do it. That is why
today, it’s no longer a problem to me. I enjoy summarizing facts and putting it on a
Manila Paper with pictures and illustrations.
2. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making materials? How did you
overcome them?
There are many difficulties I encountered in making the materials especially
when I make activity sheets. It is because I need to plan what are the things that would
surely excites the learners. I want that they will not feel bored on my activity. I want
then to learn. Therefore, I need to think and plan every step I make. I had to anticipate
different unexpected things. This made it difficult to do.
3. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of materials?
In preparation of teaching materials, teachers should consider first his/her
topic. There are many learning materials that may or may not be suitable to it. Another
is the interests of students. Use materials that ignites their interests. Surely, they will
learn more in your teaching. And also, consider the rules of the school. Direct
experiences may be helpful but if it is prohibited then don’t use it. Example, you are
teaching drugs and drug addiction. Then, don’t let your students use cigarettes and
other drugs just to know its effects. We can say it’s direct experience yet prohibited by
the school.
