My Tools
A curriculum can be either horizontally or vertically. Write samples of them on the
illustrations.
Horizontal Articulation
In the bigger context of curriculum-making in the school that I made my
observation:
The field of Mathematics moves horizontally to Physics and
Chemistry since it is the language of the latter subjects. Also, it is
related to History in terms of History of Number or Mathematics
History.
Vertical Articulation
Basing from the class that I had observed:
Miss Sarabia arranged her discussion level by
level to ensure learning in her mathematics student.
 The general concept of Operation of Polynomials
is introduced first before the individual
operations.
 Addition and Subtraction of Polynomials are
taught first since it is simpler and lower in level
than Multiplication and Division of Polynomials.
My Analysis
1. Examine the Basic Education Curriculum. What aspects do you want to modify?
Why?
Going back to the implementation years of the Basic Education Curriculum, a
study in 2003 (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study TIMMS, 2003)
showed that among 38 participating countries, Philippines ranked 34 in High School
mathematics. This is so low and alarming. What caused this one?
I’m not an expert curriculum maker but I think it’s because BEC used a
congested curriculum which caused learning hindrances. This is one thing I want to
change. I want that subjects taught be decongested in order that learning be ensured.
Decongesting subjects means clearing the passageway of learning through relating
subjects to each other thus creating it into interdisciplinary. Also instructions must
relate to real life experiences of the learners, not merely teaching concepts as what
BEC had employed.
2. What curriculum models do you prefer? Why?
For me, I prefer child-centered model, experienced-centered model and humanistic
model. All of these models belong to the Learner-Centered Model.
Today’s age showed great advancement in technology as well as great advancement in
understanding. Even students of young age already know how to use cellphones and the likes.
These things could help or hinder student learning and the proper guidance of the teacher is
needed. All these statements lead to certain conclusions – that students must be put at the
center of instruction and proper facilitation of learning must be made.
I recognized the learner as the most important persona in learning as they are the one
makingthe curriculum alive. Knowing their importance, it is just right to put them in the center
and provide them the best learning environment the teacher could offer. In doing so, we are
building a better future since their learning will be used in their future career and life.
My Reflections/My Insights
What do I like best in these
curriculum designs?
Subject-Centered Design
Model
 Its effectiveness
in students
having no prior
knowledge on the
topic/s.
 Its mode of
delivery in which
instructions are
delivered faster.
 Its aims which
focuses on
mastery in every
subject
 It is easy to use
and to deliver.
Problem-Centered Design
Model
 Its purpose
which is on
solving
problems that
hinders
learning.
 It is a unique
approach to
curriculum
which focus
on societal
problems.
Learner-Centered Design Model
 I like best the design’s focus which is the
learner.
 Its mode of delivery which fosters interaction
of students as well as the teacher.
 Its nature which is ‘learning by doing’.
My Portfolio
Make an illustration of any of the three curriculum design models. Be sure to
incorporate the salient features of the design.
Learner-Centered Curriculum Design Model
As the new age arise, students must be equipped with essential skills needed in the
fast changing world. Fortunately, learner-centered design model aims to provide the child
the full opportunity to discover the world. It puts the learners at the center making them as
the main focus and giving them the best learning possible. It fosters discovery learning,
uses cooperative learning and uses constructive way of teaching to fully develop the
learners.
