In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single

well as similarities. Each of these colonies was founded upon different ways of

natives, each colony set separate rules and laws for themselves. Virginiais more

called the Father of American Anthropology. Dr. Boas did not obtain his degree in

The 5 communication styles based on the lecture material are competing, avoiding,
accommodating, compromising and collaborating.
The competing style is used when people trying to achieve a goal or accomplish
something. It is used during arguments, such as when you are arguing against
somebody else to prove a point.
The avoiding style is used when a person shows little interest in the other party they
are communicating with. This is used when often when interacting with a person you
identify as an unimportant stranger, such as when you bump into a stranger in a
crowd and apologize.
The compromising style is used when a person cares about who they are interacting
with and care about their objectives / goals. An example of this would be scheduling
with a friend over when to meet up to do something since you care about their
opinion and are willing to try to compromise.
The accommodating stance is used when you care more about the other party s
goals more than your own (in many cases). An example of this would be if your
boss asked you to work overtime and even though you didn t want to you agreed to
do it.
The collaborating stance is used when both parties plan to accomplish their goals
fully (unlike compromising where the goals cannot be fully met) and to improve the
relationship between them. An example of this would be trading with somebody
where both sides end up better off afterwards.

Most people seem to think that racism in schools died years ago. This thought
could not be more wrong. Racism can be seen in schools now more than it ever has
been and it needs to be stopped because it affects the way students learn and their
success. The world is full of stories and incidents that have occurred involving
discrimination and the effects they have on students. This inequality and
unnecessary act called racism within many school systems can be dated back to
1896 to the Plessy V. Ferguson case which resulted in separate facilities for
education and an equal education (Campbell). This case is what provided us with
the term separate but equal , this meant that white and black children had to attend
separate schools but would supposedly get an equal education. Another case
addressing racism in education is the Cumming V. Richmond case in 1899. This
case involved three black families who petitioned the court to allow their children
to finish their high school education at a white high school, due to the closing of
the local black high school which would integrate African Americans and whites
under one facility (Campbell). Racial segregation and its unfairness even
continued into the 1950 s with the Sweatt V. Painter case involving an African
American, Homas Sweatt, who was being denied access to the University of Texas
Law School because he was black (Campbell). All of this unfair treatment of
separate but equal education continued until 1954 when one of the most popular
and familiar cases to all of us occurred, Brown V. Board of Education . In this case
a young girl from Kansas had to walk 21 blocks to the closet black only school
when a 2 White only school was only seven blocks away (Campbell). The court
ruled in Brown s favor and declared an end to racially segregated schools due to the

Ida B. Wells (1862 1931) was a newspaper editor and journalist who went on to lead
the American anti lynching crusade. Working closely with both African American
community leaders and American suffragists, Wells worked to raise gender issues
within the quot;Race Question quot; and race issues within the quot;Woman
Question. quot; Wells was born the daughter of slaves in Holly Springs, Mississippi,
on July 16, 1862. During Reconstruction, she was educated at a Missouri Freedman s
School, Rust University, and began teaching school at the age of fourteen. In 1884,
she moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she continued to teach while attending Fisk

In the aftermath of the lynching and her outspoken criticism of it, her newspaper s
office was sacked. Wells then moved to New York City, where she continued to
write editorials and against lynching, which was at an all time high level in the years
after Reconstruction. Joining the staff of The New York Age, Wells became a very
respected lecturer and organizer for anti lynching societies made up of men and
women of all races. She traveled throughout the U.S. and went to Britain twice to
speak about anti lynching activities.
In 1895 Wells married Ferdinand L. Barnett, a Chicago lawyer, public official, and
publisher of the Conservator. She settled in Chicago and adopted as her married
name Ida Wells Barnett. After 1895 she limited her activities to Chicago, but she was
quite active in Chicago s rapidly growing African American community. In Chicago
she wrote for the Conservator, published an expose of lynching, The Red Record,
and organized Chicago women regarding several causes, from anti lynching to
suffrage. From 1898 to 1902, Wells served as secretary of the National Afro
American Council, and in 1910 she founded and became the first president of the
Negro Fellowship League.
Throughout her life, Wells was militant in her demands for equality and justice for
