The Giver Essay Questions
Crafting an essay on the topic "The Giver Essay Questions" can be quite challenging due to the
multifaceted nature of the subject matter. First and foremost, one needs to thoroughly
understand Lois Lowry's novel "The Giver" and its intricacies, exploring its themes, characters,
and the dystopian world it presents. This requires a deep analysis of the narrative, delving into
the symbolism, allegorical elements, and the overall message conveyed by the author.
The essay may need to explore thought-provoking questions related to the novel, such as the
ethical implications of a society that suppresses emotions, the consequences of conformity, and
the role of memory in shaping human experience. Addressing these complex ideas demands
critical thinking and the ability to connect various aspects of the story, requiring a careful
examination of the characters' motivations and the societal structures within the book.
Moreover, effective essay writing involves articulating ideas coherently and structuring
arguments logically. It requires the skill to present a thesis statement that encapsulates the main
argument and to support it with relevant evidence from the text. Proper citation and referencing
are also crucial, demonstrating a scholarly approach to the analysis.
In addition, one must be adept at integrating quotes, examples, and textual evidence to
substantiate the points made. Balancing the exploration of broader themes with a detailed
examination of specific scenes or characters adds depth to the analysis, making the essay more
comprehensive and insightful.

Growing Up In Poverty In The United States
Poverty is the condition of being without adequate food or money. American
Psychological Association (MLA): Poverty is not having enough money to have the
basic necessities in life. It is an issue within the United States and the world. There
are many children that grow up in poverty and the effects can last throughout the life.
When growing up in povertythere can be high risk of teen pregnancy, poor heath,
crime, Drug use and a lack of education. (Boyden)
Poverty and poor health worldwide are inseparably related. Poor health is a direct
effect of growing up in poverty; as children living in low economic families may not
have access to adequate medical health coverage. Which means the child will not
have proper immunization and checkup that they need to ensure good health. Studies
show when a child grows up in poverty the child can be underweight (Boyden). Poor
under lined illness may also lead to issues throughout a lifespan. Poverty increases
neglect of health issues. That causes more health problems which ends in death.
Statistics also show that living in poor rule areas, with low quality schools. Even if

People who live in low economic and rule areas with less social standings are those
who are considered to be in poverty. Someone who is suffering from poverty may
have to live in cramped, inadequate houses or they could be homeless. Those who
are unemployed or live in low economic areas are more likely to have unstable
family life, broken relationships, with less involvement in their community, and low
aspirations with alcoholism and drug addiction. We assume poverty is unlikely the
cause of high crime in rule areas and for drug and alcohol addiction. But studies show
people that are in poverty find themselves using their circumstance for an excuse to
commit crimes and the use drugs and

What Constitutes An Artifact Of Empire
What constitutes an artifact of empire
Structures that memorialize the nation s imperial gains and losses
Introduction
Public monuments and literature share a lot in common. At first sight, it might be
difficult to relate one to the other. However, deeply embedded in them they share a
motif: an imagined community. They embrace a sense of belonging; they represent a
nation or an empire.
It is physically impossible for a person to meet every one of his fellow nationals;
time and space prevents it. So how can that person know that there are actually
millions like him inside a given country s borders? By representation. That
representation can come in different ways. Two of them are memorials and literature.
More so, the imagined community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dracula depicts London as the brain of the British Empire, a centre that could be
invaded by contamination and disease. In this way, Dracula was used to ignite
fears among the British people. If compared to the over use of terrorism threats by
George W. Bush and other political figures, leading powers and empires feed off
fears. Fearful population usually accept drastic measures to continue their
domination, and Dracula is a figure of that: how fear was used to continue the
domination of the British Empire. As with terrorism, Dracula is an external threat,
an imagined enemy whose promise is to destroy an empire. Dracula is feared
economically in a period where capitalism was emerging and where dominance over
colonies was of utmost importance. DraculaВґs voyage to the west, to London not
only the capital of the British Empire but the capital of the financial world , threatens
to alter economic power balances. This can be seen today in London, for example,
with the threat of the Greek economic crisis. Economic fear still haunt the streets of

Hometown Inventory Paper Mechanicville is a city, one of the smallest cities in the
area by state actually. It is located in Saratoga County, New York. More specifically,
The city is located on the eastern border of Saratoga County and is north of Albany,
the state capital. Mechanicville borders the towns of Stillwater (of which it was once
a part) and Halfmoon in the county, and the town of Schaghticoke, in Rensselaer
County. Many people describe Mechanicville as a boring, dull, nothing to do town,
but in reality Mechanicville has a very important history, and in my personal opinion
is a great place to live.

All the residents gather in Tallmadge park at the beginning of the day, until night
falls. It starts with a breakfast from the chamber of commerce and also mcdonalds,
and a flag raising ceremony. There are different bands that play in the band stand,
and many different tents where the locals can sell things, in a yard sale type way.
There are also rides, and many trailers that sell fair food in them such as cotton
candy, corn dogs, and fried dough. At night usually around ten, there is the annual
firework show, which lasts about a half hour. It is one of the days where
Mechanicville residents can get out and see each other and socialize with old
friends, or a great activity to bring your kids to on a hot summer July day.
Another activity they have here in Mechanicville is something called the duck derby.
Many residents of Mechanicville gather down at the docks, behind the police station
and race rubber ducks down the Hudson River and the ones that finish first get some
sort of prize. A few years ago at one of the duck derby s a local high schoolteacher
ended up creating a flash mob with a bunch of her students, something that no one
was expecting to happen. At the duck derby there is also food, and music and
usually a lot of people celebrate it, because that also takes place in the
Rick Wagoner
The managerial challenge that Rick Wagoner attributed was challenge # 1.
Evidently, we see that he used Competive Advantage. In broader terms, competitive
advantage is the ability of an organization to produce goods or services more
effiecently, than competitors do, thereby outperforming them. (pg. 8, paragraph 1)
We see Rick Wagoner using this challenge by being responsive to customers,
innovation, quality, and effiency. (pg. 8. Paragraph 1) In greater details, Rick
focused not just one area of goals but three areas that he thought would propel his
company to another level. In june 2005, Wagoner laid out an agenda for North
America at GM annual meeting that basically speaks about his goals which is build
great cars, and trucks, revitalize sales and marketing, cut costs, and rectify health
care. (pg. 34, paragraph 9) One of many strategic marketing move that Rick Wagoner

Wagoner executing this role by going above and beyond for the company and not

hasn t been afraid to change the status quo. (pg. 34, paragraph 5) In other words, A
lot of success in this business, wagoner alluded, is having a big plan and

Joseph Heller Catch 22 Essay
Joseph Heller, the author, was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. Heller joined
the Air Force during World War II, and flew up to sixty missions as a wing
bombardier. His time in the Air Force apparently had a restricted effect on the book
he wrote, Catch 22. It is generally agreed that Heller s war years... had only a
minimal impact on his conception of Catch 22. (Joseph). Heller was dismissed from
the war and given medals for his time of service. After his time serving the country,
Heller attended New York University where he got a Bachelor of the Arts degree
and got his Masters of Arts degree from Colombia University. He became an
English professor for Pennsylvania State University. Heller began writing stories
and had them published, he thought of them as too similar to Ernest Hemingway s
pieces. Heller had a job at McCall s where he worked as an advertising copywriter
before he quit his job because of the success his book Catch 22 had. His most
famous and successful work was Catch 22, and the book really brought Heller fame

Edgar Allan Poe Figurative Language
Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe lived a sad, pitiful life. His poems are depressing
and they often revolve around death, loss of a loved one, or something of the like.
He is genuinely a dark person. Edgar Allan Poe has a truly dark way of writing and
describing not only how he feels, but also the way he perceives reality around him.
What is even more interesting is that he died in such a way, it would seem he would
write about the way he died.
Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19th, 1809. He was born in Boston, MA,
united states. Unfortunately, he did not have a very good childhood. His mother and
father were both in the show business, and were both actors. His mother left him
when he was three years old. When he was eighteen years old, he joined the
military.(Biography.com) When Poe was twenty seven years old, he married his

Edgar Allan Poe uses figurative language, and precision of language to explain
how he lost the love of his life, Annabel Lee. One example of figurative language in
the poem Annabel Lee is when Poe wrote, And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea can ever dissever my soul from the soul of the
beautiful Annabel Lee. His point in saying this is that his love for her is so great,
that he feels other worldly powers such as angels or demons could not diminish or
corrode his love for her. A second example of Poe s figurative language in the poem
Annabel Lee, is when poe wrote, I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom
by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love I and my Annabel Lee
With a love that the Seraphs in Heaven Coveted her and me. By saying this, Poe
says that he feels the Heavens are Jealous of him and his Annabel Lee. Jealousy,
According to the Bible, is a sin. He, of course, was not being literal. Poe was simply
using that phrase to exaggerate how he
The Concept of Neoliberalism
Neoliberalism Neoliberalism is a concept which states that both politics and
economics need to be reevaluated to respond to the sociology and the psychology
of the people that are affected. This type of social structure demands that the
economic system must become less strict, and advocates more free trade and open
markets. According to Paul Treanor, Neoliberalism is a philosophy in which the
existence and operation of a market are valued in themselves, separately from any
previous relationship with the production of goods and services (Fish). One of the
most important components of neoliberalism is the removal of big government from
the business world and the allowance of state owned enterprises to be controlled by
private citizens. Neoliberalism was a term coined by Alexander Rustow who defined
it as the priority of the price mechanism, the free enterprise, the system of competition
and a strong and impartial state (Mirowski 13). The basic thesis behind neoliberalism
is that the government needs to evacuate their position as dominator of enterprise.
Businesses should be controlled by the people and the government s function in
industry only to protect the individual participants. Chris Harman writes: This
ideology contended that free market economies will run smoothly, steadily producing
more wealth. Any problems that arise are supposedly a result of unnatural
monopolies (especially in the labour market), which prevent the free movement of
prices and wages pulling
Stereotypes In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld
The image of a person is often something that gets judged very quickly in society.
People often see others and instantly think of something about that person. Men,
women and children are all outcast for many different reasons. Society judges
people for traits including, skin colour, gender, hair color, and body type. The media
and society constantly make people feel bad about the way they look. In Uglies, by
Scott Westerfeld, the main theme is about finding one s identity in a world that
already has one made up for them. Despite this theme, the characters in the novel do
not strive to overcome society s stereotypes. The pretties, specials and the uglies do
not try to break out of society s ways and find their own identities. After the

They are scared of the government and what might happen, so they run away
without trying to interfere with what the operation is doing to innocent people. In
addition to this, the specials also act like robots. In the novel the specials keep
repeating one line to the uglies, they say we don t want to hurt you. But we will if
we have to. This line shows how the specials have very little emotions and feelings.
They have a mission and they will do anything to achieve it. They do not look for
anything to change and if it were up to them nothing ever
The Middle Eastern Country Of Yemen
In the Middle Eastern country of Yemen, a battle is being fought leaving much
destruction to infrastructure and hundreds of lives lost. Actually it is not so much of
a battle as it is a total, one sided bombardment of this country. This is an attempt from
a U.N. sponsored, Saudi led coalition that is trying to persuade Houthi rebels into
thinking reasonably and diplomatically by bombing them back into the Stone Age. In
order to fully understand what brought the U.N. to a point of agreement on
engagement of this operation, it is important to understand the recent history of Yemen
and the events leading up to this conflict. Equally important is the geographic
location of Yemen, the main actors fighting over this country and who directly...

The city of Riyadh was eventually forced to recognize Yemen s republican
government.
Now as then, Riyadh sees the struggle in Syria as a defining moment. As the leader
of the Sunni Muslim world, it perceives an opportunity to check what it sees as
Iranian plans to encircle the kingdom with hostile Shiite dominated regimes. As the
war has taken on a more sectarian character, the usually reserved foreign minister,
Prince Saud al Faisal, has described Assad s onslaught against his own people as
genocide and Syrian lands as being under occupation a clear reference to the
presence of Iranian and Hezbollah forces.
It is no secret that the Saudis are supplying elements of the Syrian opposition with
weapons. They all but admitted as much when the prince said a few weeks ago that if
the international community is not willing to do anything, then they must allow
Syrians to defend themselves.
The Saudis will use all tools available to oust Assad, while taking measures to ensure
that the weapons they re supplying to the rebels do not fall into the hands of
extremists. Nevertheless, following the chemical attack on civilians near Damascus
last month, the Saudi foreign minister spoke candidly about the inability of the Arab
nations to put a stop to Assad s campaign through force of arms, adding that any
military effort to do so would likely involve actors outside the region. Recent

Quality Improvement Initiative Falls Management Program
Quality Improvement Initiative Falls Management Program in Nursing Homes
Falls are very common among nursing home residents. Residents in nursing homes
are more likely to fall due to their age, chronic health conditions, medication, or
change in the environment after admission to the facility. The people who provide
care every day in nursing homes know firsthand how critical falling can be to the
health of the residents they care for. Fall prevention is critical in order to decrease
falls in nursing homes. There are programs that are designed to help nursing home
staff members identify the reason for resident fall. These programs give a preventive
measure that assures accuracy and sensitivity of patients risk from falling. The Falls
Management Program (FMP) is one of these programs. The Falls Management
Program (FMP) is a multifaceted quality improvement initiative that is designed to
assist nursing homes, it includes assessment, individualized care planning, resident
monitoring, and the elimination of environmental safety hazards (Taylor, J.,
Parmelee, P., Brown, H., Ouslander, J., 2005). FMP also improves care processes
and outcomes through educational, staff training and quality improvement tools and
ongoing consultation by qualified falls nurse. There are several reasons why FMP
is significant. Research shows that about half of the nursing home residents in the
U.S. fall each year and it is estimated that 1 in 3 of those who fall will fall in the
future. Falling
Analysis Of Eva Bradbury s Eva An 89 Year Old Widow
Eva an 89 year old widow, was introduced to me through a collogue. I met Eva at
her apartment, which was part of an assisted living community. Eva is of European
decent and identifies herself as an active and proud member of the Lutheran
Church. Eva lives alone and is reportedly able to attend to all of her activities of
daily living. When I met with Eva I was mindful of the ecological model of Systems
Theory. I sought to understand Eva through the complex interactions of behavior,
biology and environment that had occurred over the last nine decades. Eva answers
the door and invites me in. I follow her to the kitchen where we sit at the kitchen
table. She insists on pouring me a cup of her favorite tea. The steam from the kettle
is screaming, I m ready! Eva is able to navigate her cozy kitchen by supporting her
balance chair to counter to stove, stove to chair to tea cup. The tremor that was
apparent as she scooped the loose tea into the pot, gives way to the steadiness
needed to poor the boiling water. She returns the kettle to the stove and tells me
we are three minutes away from the perfect cup of Earl Gray. Eva tells me about the
day she was introduced to the Light of Day Tea Company and their Earl Gray tea.
She describes the robust flavor and creamy aftertaste. She tells how it took 89 years
for her to find the perfect cup of tea; tea worthy of occupying her cup every
afternoon. I find myself in awe of how elaborately detailed Eva s process of tea
making is.

Righteousness In The Conflict Between Job And Job
Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He
abounded in gifts of mercy and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered
sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God was quite pleased to observe
as his servant maintained integrity in his dealing. The Almighty spoke about Job s
godly devotion to Satanthe Devil. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily
concerned with selfish interests. God decided to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job
to test the patriarch s motives. In this essay, I will highlight the significance of
righteousness in the debates between Job and his friends.
Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to
uphold righteous standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due
to Satan s efforts. His 10 children died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants
also died under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, his wife deserted and
mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse God and died.
Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to
intensify his physical attacks on Job. Job was struck with a debilitating illness that
subjected him to constant pain. Members of the community also shunned him. Later,
three friends of Job came to visit him. However, they did not say anything to Job for
three day.
Job s friends claimed that he was suffering due to secret sins. Eliphaz, Bildad, and

Compare And Contrast The Twins Of Siam And The
Elephant Man
Comparative Analytical Text Essay
The Twins of Siam and The Elephant Man
Essay question:
People who are physically disabled all lead similar lives.
Do the Twins of Siam and the Elephant Man show this to be true?
The Elephant Man is the true story of Joseph Merrick s life from Tim Vicary s novel.
Joseph Merrick was born in London in 1862 and later, he developed a disease that
made him disabled. The Twins of Siam is a short text about Change and Eng, who
were the conjoined twins, born in Thailand in 1811. These characters in both stories
are all disabled and lived in the 18th century. Even though they all experience
physical disabilities, Joseph Merrick s life does not have a lot in common with
Chang and Eng s. While they are all physically disabled and stared at by others,
Joseph s life is more miserable since he suffers more abuse than the twins do.
However, Joseph Merrick and the twins all have some happiness experiences in their
lives, but he experiences more loneliness and misery than Chang and Eng. Although
these three men feel frustrated because of their disabilities, they all find some
activities that they enjoy and make the best of their lives.
While Merrick, Chang and Eng are all physically disabled and stared at by others,
Joseph s life is more pathetic since he suffers more abuse than the twins do.
Unfortunately, Merrick has been humiliated and treated terribly by a man called
Silcock in his early days, and he has no way of escaping his miserable life. When

Separation of Powers in the Commowealth

However, there are instances where state courts have influences from the decisions
of cases in the Commonwealth courts. In the ruling made in the case Kable v

exceeding federal jurisdiction. Therefore, State Supreme courts rely on decisions of
federal courts and vice versa (Harris, 2013).
In the separation of powers there is the doctrine that courts cannot be vested with
non judicial power and federal judicial powers cannot be vested in a state court. It
goes that if a court exercises non judicial power, then separation of powers will be
violated. The states do not have explicit separation of powers in their respective
constitutions. Parliament is able to vest judicial federal powers with non judicial
powers so long as they do not undermine their integrity. States courts can still exercise
their independence since they have some discretion in some matters.
Looking at the separation of powers in States such as Queensland, there are unique
features. Commonwealth Constitution confers separation of powers but States do not
have constitutional separation of powers. Influence of executive on
Intermolecular Forces Essay
Intermolecular forces are the attractive and/or repulsive forces among independent
particles, such as molecules, atoms, or ions, within a sample of matter. These forces
differ from chemical bonds, or intramolecular forces, because chemical bonds exist
between the atoms of a single molecule. For example, intermolecular forces could be
described as the forces that attract many water molecules together, while chemical
bonds refer to the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms of a single water
molecule. Chemical bonds are also generally more permanent and stronger than
intermolecular forces.
There are various types of intermolecular forces, all which differ in strength. These
forces include: ion ion forces, dipole dipole forces, ion dipole forces, ion induced
dipole, dipole induced dipole, and London dispersion forces. The amount of charge,
how it is distributed, and how long a charge distribution will last, all factor into how
strong the intermolecular forces are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These forces attract ions rather strongly. In a pure ionic compound, we call these
forces ionic bonds and consider it to be an intramolecular force. In a mixture of
substances, however, it is seen as an intermolecular force since the ions are
interacting without being bonded. Ion ion forces are repulsive if they are cation
cation or anion anion, and are attractive if they are cation anion. Charge and size
influence the strength of these forces. Small molecules with large charge magnitudes
would have stronger ion ion forces acting between them because these factors would
allow for closer approach to their

The King Of The Franks Essay
Sabrina Fearon
History 8G
4/14/16
Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon
them.
William Shakespeare
Do you agree/disagree/partially agree that Charlemagne was an example of all three?
Clovis, king of the Franks, established the Merovingian Empire in 481. Then, in
511, he split his empire between his four sons. The kings in the Merovingian line
continued to hand down their thrones to their later generations, which slowly
started to make them weak. This was because they were using nepotism instead of
giving positions based on merit. So, after time, positions called Mayors of the
Palace were formed. Mayors of the Palace, according to the dictionary, were people
of a line of hereditary administrative lieutenants to the Merovingian kings who
eventually took over royal function and title in the Frankish kingdoms . Over time,
the descendants of Clovis became to be known as Do Nothing kings , because
they relied on the Mayors of the Palace to do work. The Do Nothing kings began to
have virtually no power, but they still held on to their title as king. One of the most
famous Mayors of the Palace was Charles Martel. His son, Pepin became the
Frankish king. Pepin s son was Charlemagne. Charlemagne, or Charles the Great,
was the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, who achieved many well known
accomplishments which have shaped the political, military, and religious aspects of
Europe today. Charlemagne was known by Einhart as a good father,
Tragedy of Deforestation Essays
Deforestation has different levels of which I am going to try to outline in a simple
manner. The deforestation begins on a local level, then to a regional, level and then
last the global level.
As you will read, the forest is home to people and wildlife, etc. The forest also has
many purposes for which we need but we as a whole is a big picture. We can use it
but we also abuse it. Every living creature needs the forest for oxygen, that is what
the trees are for, but if we keep cutting them for logging, cattle raising for soy, and
many other reasons we do what we do, then how will we breathe?
First, deforestation is on a local level and the impact of this loss is the people s
possibilities of survival as an independent culture. ... Show more content on

On the other hand, they compose an enormous carbon reservoir and their elimination
contributes to the aggravation of the greenhouse effect generated mainly by the use
of fossil fuels. When they are burnt or cut down, the carbon that had been stored up
for centuries in the forests is incorporated to the atmosphere, increasing the level of
carbon concentration in it and aggravating the greenhouse effect.
We are all to blame for this problem, and it is so sad to see such a beautiful natural
element of our planet being destroyed.
Even though the importances of these forests have been made, deforestation has
not slowed down. The FAO of the United States (Food and Agriculture
Organization) shows that deforestation rates increased 8.5% from 2000 2005 when
compared with the 1990 s. The loss of primary forests expanded approximately by
25% over the same period. Nigeria and Vietnam s rate of primary forest loss has
doubled since the 1990 s and Peru s rate has tripled. On the graph below, you will be
able to see the rate of change in total deforestation rate.
Nigeria has the world s largest deforestation rate. Brazil loses the largest area of
forest annually. The Congo consumes more bush meat than any other tropical
country. FAO released its 2005 Global Forest Resources Assessment concluding that
net deforestation rates have fallen since 1990 2000 yet some 13 million hectares of
the world s forests are still lost
The American Civil War, Wars, And Rumors Of Wars
The American Civil War
Wars, Wars and rumors of wars!!!! Everyone knows the United States has had its fair
share of wars. Let me start by giving you a brief list of wars the United States has
participated in according to Wikipedia. Both Barbary Wars (1801 1805, 1815 1816),
Wars of 1812, Mexican American War (1846 48), American Civil War(1861 65),
Indian War (1865 91), Spanish American War( 1898), Philippine American War
(1899 1902) Border War(Mexican Revolutionary)1910 1919, World War I (1917

Vietnam War (1964 1975), Persian Gulf War (1990 91), and of course the War on
Terrorism (2001 present). And that s just the major wars. Out of all of these wars
the one that I will discuss is the American Civil War. First, I will enlighten you on
why I chose the American Civil War. Next, I will expound upon the reason that
commenced the American Civil War. Last, I will inform you on what the after effects
were from the American Civil War. The American Civil War just might be one of the
most historic and significant wars for the United States of America s history. Some
might say well what about the American Revolutionary War? Well then let me help
you distinguish the difference between American Revolutionary War and the
American Civil War. The American Revolutionary War was the battle between Great
Britain and thirteen of its North American colonies, which had proclaimed
themselves the independent United
Lucille Clifton Home To My Hips Analysis
In Lucille Clifton s home to my hips, Clifton perspicuously uses her hips as a
symbol of self love and radiates the message of body positivity. She uses this poem
as an opportunity to expose one of the many flaws in modern society, fat shaming.
The tone of the speaker as well as diction used adds sass and pride to the poem and
gives the reader an insight into this unique personality. In addition to challenging the
common views of society, sexuality is also a main topic in this poem. In more than
just a physical sense, hips are used to symbolize the empowerment of women no
matter the shape or size. The focal technique used is the pivotal symbolism of the
hips. The hips represent so much more than a body part, rather they represent the

Saint Francis In True Ecstasy
Saint Francis in True Ecstasy Throughout history, art has been made to depict not
only the life and culture of the time, but also as a reminder of important religious
events of the past. One religious event in particular, which artists of multiple eras
have chosen to paint is the iconic Saint Francis in Ecstasy . Two prime examples of
this can be seen in New York City. One painting
made around 1476 1478, by
Giovanni Bellini, entitled Saint Francis in the Desert (but also referred to as Saint
Francis in Ecstasy ), was created in Venice using oil and tempera on poplar panel.
The painting is 49 1/16 x 55 7/8in. and now stands in the Frick Collection.

Whereas Bellini used landscape style for his painting, Castiglione chose do his
painting as a portrait, so that there is no doubt when looking at the image that St.

the center of the canvas and taking up a majority of the entire painting is Saint
Francis kneeling down on a rock as he grasps tightly and desperately to the crucifix
as he looks up into the sky. A golden light in the sky above him creates almost a
halo above his head and swept over his face is a look of pain and devotion. Unlike
Bellini s, Castiglione s painting is neither filled with detail or landscape. Other
than the close up figure of St. Francis there is little else to be seen or focused on.
The light that is cast upon the rope tied around the waist of his brown habit leads

Beer Industry Oligopoly Essays
Introduction The brewing industry was once held to competition among many
breweries in small geographic areas. That was almost a century ago. The U.S.
brewing industry today is characterized by the dominance of three brewers, which I
will talk about in this paper. There are many factors today that make the beer industry
an oligopoly. Such factors include various advancements in technology (packaging,
shipping and production), takeovers and mergers, economies of scale, barriers to
entry, high concentration, and many other factors that I will cover in this paper.
Over the course of the paper I will try to define an oligopoly, give a brief history of
the brewing industry, and finally to show how the brewing industry today is an...

manufacturers, shipping companies, agriculture, and other businesses who depend on

Americans today. There are generally three tiers of beer suppliers in the United

The Beer Industry Today In this paper I will be talking about the U.S. beer industry

U.S. brewing industry oligopoly. The U.S. brewing industry has three major
players: Anheuser Busch, SAB Miller, and Coors/Molson. Anheuser Busch is
currently the largest brewer in the world, producing over 100 million barrels a year.
Anheuser Busch currently owns over 50% of the market in the United States, with
Miller trailing behind at 20% and Coors at about 11% with the rest of the market

is for newcomers to enter the market is a great importance. If there are high barriers

The Life of Peter: Idealism vs. Realism
When asking a child what they want to be when the grow up, they will most likely
tell you a doctor, teacher or some other public service occupation. They have the
ideal that a career helping people is the best job a person could have. When those
same kids get into high school their ideals become even greater (this really only
applies to middle upper class). They want to be artist, musicians, actors, or free lance
writers who travel the world for the next big story. In college the ideals of the
student are usually pushed to the back burner so that there is room for reality. Peter s

The job was not too hard for him and paid decent money (but as an idealist it was
not money Peter was after). For a realist money is usually the driving force in a
person choosing a career. Finding the American Dream is no easy task when it
comes to one s profession. How many people do you know who are truly working
at a job they love? After being hypnotized occupational therapist Peter has a
revelation that he does still have the ability to change the control his job has on
him. Instead of finding a new job that might have some meaning or interest to him,
he decides to turn his cubicle job into his ideal job by showing up when he feels
like it and wearing whatever he wants. Understand that to Peter the ideal job is
none at all. Although the idea seems great Peter does still have a small ounce of
reality that doesn t allow him to quit his job so instead he goes to work on his own
schedule and with his own agenda.
Peter has a rotten girlfriend in the movie. She could be the mascot for the realist as
Peter is the idealist. The girlfriend doesn t understand the internal conflict s Peter is
going through so she makes him go to a therapist. Instead of supporting or even try
to understand Peter when he doesn t show up to work one Saturday she yells at him.
Everyone in Peter s life seems to know about his girlfriend s cheating as well. Peter

The Lovers, By Rachel Mcadams And Ryan Gosling

you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me...everyday. Sound familiar?
The lovers are named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun, also known as Duke. As
young people, these characters are played by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
These actors portray first loves and heartbreak that tugs on your heartstrings
beautifully just wanting and waiting for more.
Starting off the movie with a beautiful scene looking across a sunrise filled lake,
which it gives off a comfortable, warm feeling to the viewers at home or in the
theater. Then it pans out to an elder Noah Calhoun (played by James Garner)
taking his daily medicine in a nursing home. Third scene shows an also elderly
Allie Hamilton (Gena Rowlands) looking over the lake from her bedroom
window. A nurse is asking her several questions about how she is feeling and what
she would like to do that day. Allie doesn t give off any interest in doing anything
the nurse is suggesting. Noah enters her room with a notebook, offering to read to
her. The nurse insists that Allie should do something else but Allie quickly accepts
Noah s offer and sits herself down to listen to him read from the notebook that which
she wrote many years ago. This sets up the opening of the classic love story, The

they needed to build a multi billion company that will dominate the market to be

In particular, seventy percent of genetic, congenital, cases have no syndromes.
Children are often diagnosed around twenty months due to this factor. Also, a good
amount of genetic hearing losses, eighty percent to be exact are autosomal
recessive. This means that the parents do not have a hearing loss, but they are
carriers. This gives physicians less information that would alert them of an
infantile hearing loss. During the elementary years, children with this loss can
encounter a variety of obstacles. One big obstacle can occur with the development
of reading skills. Since reading and reading comprehension is so important for life
this can be a huge setback if it is not met with intensive intervention. According to
research, the median reading level for high school graduates with hearing loss
falls between fourth and fifth grade. If a child with a loss is able to begin their
school years already knowing the alphabet, they will have a much higher chance
of being a grade level reader. Knowing the alphabet early on in life is able to
increase the phonological awareness that the child has. Their phonological
awareness can predict their future reading abilities. Children who are deaf or hard
of hearing are known to have troubles when it comes to their social lives especially
with their hearing peers. According to Anita, Jones, and Luckner, Individuals who
lack social skills are often rejected by others and are at risk for developing mental

It warns him that MacDuff will come back to Scotland and destroy him. Acting as

Macbeth soon realizes this is not the only apparition he will have to deal with.

existing sociocultural situation of the period he is depicting, and the factors in it that
condition male attitudes towards women; 2) the consequences of the absence of a
moderating female principle in his fictions; 3) Achebes progressively changing

Things Fall Apart is significant because it began the vogue of African novels of
cultural contact and conflict. It has been translated into over twenty major world

In a style that is expository rather than prescriptive, Achebe s novel mirrors the
sociocultural organization existing in the Africa of the era he describes. Like Zora

whether these techniques are effective in promoting adaptation and development of
the preterm infant and if so, how do these therapies impact the preterm infant s
overall development. Throughout the human experience, one of the most complex

After he lingers for a bit, he looks out the window again and the pulse is much
stronger. The protagonist probably witnessed the initial explosion of the bomb
and possibly the initial formation of the mushroom cloud, but he cannot see the
cloud as he is too far away. [You] see that the light is growing brighter and brighter
and brighter. (Baker, 1989,p.9). In the story Grace Period he tries to call several
people and places. Either the line was busy, or there was no answer. Except when he
dials the scientists, who are in the bunker they do not believe him and hang up. The
reason he experienced these issues, is because when the nuclear bomb is dropped it
releases an electromagnetic pulse which destroys everything electronic. Which is
why he could not reach out to anybody, except for the scientists as they were in a
bunker the electromagnetic pulse (EMG) could not get to
Human Knowledge On The Diversity Of Fish Wildlife
Dr. Olaf L.F. Weyl is an ichthyologist from the South African Institute for Aquatic
Biodiversity. The goal of his research is to develop human knowledge on the
diversity of fish wildlife. According to Dr. Weyl, both quantitative and qualitative
data on this subject was severely lacking. Any numerical data acquired was not
necessarily accurate. Another worry of his, was the impact of introductions of
recreational fishing species, such as carp, trout, and bass, on the native fish of
Southern Africa. Dr. Weyl had many questions and performed many experiments
on a variety of aquatic animals. Using go pros, scuba gear, drip stations, and nets,
he and his students were able to gather and observe large amounts of fish for
experiments. He tried really hard to emphasize how large the impact of non native
species are on native species. In one experiment, a count of species in six separate
pond less than 100 meters apart were taken. He encountered something odd so he
took data from more ponds. After analyzing the data of many ponds, it became
obvious that where there were no minnows there were bass. Where there were no
bass, they found minnows. If bass ever invades a body of water, take over is total.
There is no sharing. In another experiment, the hunting and eating habits of a semi
aggressive native South African fish, kurper, was examined. Multiple kurper were
captured and put in a tank. Different species of prey was then added. As the kurper
hunted, they were videoed. It turns out

The Controversy Of Legalizing Marijuana
Marijuana has been a highly controversial topic in our society for several years
with the main controversy being over whether marijuana should be legalized or
not. Branching off of the idea of legalization comes this idea of marijuana being
used for a medical purpose. Marijuana has proved to benefit medically in multiple
different ways physically and mentally. Despite the knowledge of relief marijuana
could provide there are still massive amounts of controversy circulating the idea of
legalization for medical purposes. The controversy of marijuana being used for
medicine goes as far back as 1996. In 1996, it was said that at least 8 states in the
United States had voters who approved of the legalization of medical marijuana. In
1999 fuel was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While there are studies that lead us to believe that the use of medical marijuana on
cancer patients can actually help their recovery, it is also reported that the THC,
can impair the body s immune system. Some methods of ingesting medical
marijuana include, food and drink consumption, as well as smoking. Smoking can
lead to respiratory problems due to the smoke, leaving the body with a weakness,
possibly causing cancer in the lungs and respiratory tract. This can also lead to an
increased risk of heart attacks. Overall, these side effects and long lasting
impairments can be much more harmful than the possible positives of medical
marijuana. To conclude, medical marijuana is beneficial but if used excessively
side effects could occur. The group is for medical marijuana due to the fact that it
can be used for tax purposes and it helps an ill person get through their pain. While
we focus on the pros, we also understand the cons which include not being FDA
approved, bringing on mental issues, and harming the immune system and other body
systems. There may not be a definite side in society that is for or against this topic,
but it is important to know that medical marijuana is used to lessen the pain for the
patients that use
Terrorism And The Threat Of Terrorism
Terrorism has continuously been an ongoing danger all over the world. Threats
pertaining to international security seem to be loosely organized and self financed
groups or the extremist Islamist parties using religion as a pretext that pose threats to
the U.S. and other allies. However, while most see terrorismas being international,
domestic radicalism has become an ever increasing problem, specifically within the
United States. Cross national links between specific terrorists groups are becoming
greatly feared, due to the increasing growth in combat training, funding,
technological transfer and political development. Uranium Enrichment, a byproduct
in producing chemical weapons (WMD s) are becoming even greater in countries
like North Korea, Syria and now Russia. With Iran being a major sponsor for
terrorism and great influences like Al Qaeda forming groups desiring Uranium for
the purposes of chemical warfarehas led nations to constant anxiety. Terrorists threats
pertaining to both national and international security are tremendously serious. By
means of rapid growth in technological advancement, weapons of mass destruction
are gradually greater than that of the past. The world population is now faced with a
serious dilemma. Terrorism, like viruses, is everywhere. There is a global perfusion
of terrorism, which accompanies any system of domination as though it were its
shadow, ready to activate itself anywhere, like a double agent (Baudrillard, 2013).
Persuasive Essay On Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park, untamed wild beauty. Stunning landscapes, beautiful
waterfalls and rivers, breathtaking wildlife, and geothermal activity all come
together to make Yellowstone an amazing place. People come from all over the
world to witness the beauty of Yellowstone. It is a regulated national park for a
reason, it is so amazing, so beautiful, so spectacular to not preserve it. It hosts
bison, elk, deer, bald eagles, bears, moose, beavers, and amazing trout rivers,
everything a perfect mountain ecosystem should hold. However now there is
something else, something that is natural, was removed but has now returned,
flourishing and benefiting its surroundings. Wolves, have been reintroduced into
Yellowstone and have greatly benefited the area. These wolves have started a
positive and beneficial renewal in the park. The reintroduction of wolves into
Yellowstone National Park is beneficial because they created and natural and
beneficial trophic cascade, other animals in the park benefited from the wolves,
and because the land was able to regrow and flourish due to the wolves presence.
Since the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone they have created an
astounding and advantageous trophic cascade. A trophic cascade is an ecological
phenomenon triggered by the addition or removal of top predators and involving
reciprocal changes in the relative populations of predator and prey through a food
chain. These often result in dramatic changes in ecosystem structure and nutrient
cycling. In a three level food chain, an increase (or decrease) in carnivores causes a
decrease (or increase) in herbivores and an increase (or decrease) in primary
producers such as plants and phytoplankton according to briticanna (how to make
better). The entire ecosystem was able to become whole again because the wolves,
a key species, were reintroduced. Now this may seem weird, a predator comes into
the area a begins to kill animals, how can this be beneficial in any way? Well the
fact of the matter is that it is extremely beneficial. The reason being the problem in
Yellowstone was the overpopulation of the elk. These elk had no predators, they were
free to roam and reproduce, and they did this very well. Now elk are also a

The National Coal Mining Museum is based at the site of Caphouse Colliery in
Overton; once a fully functioning mine. The museum has an area, 140 meters
underground, which has been adapted to demonstration the development and
revolution in mining techniques through out the ages. It presents mining techniques
from the early 19th century all the way through to the present day. The museum also
houses an array of mining machinery and vehicles that has been conserved since its
use, which are kept in a gallery above ground. Such machinery includes locomotives,
BJD coal cutters, and a seventeen tonne Dosco Roadheader that was used to cut
roadways underground. (National Coal Mining Museum, 2014)
Equipment Types
Coal had been in use far long before the 19th century, however, the arrival of the
industrial revolution saw a boom in the demand for coal and as a result coal mining
became an enormous and lucrative industry. Nonetheless, the equipment used in the
early 19th century was still exceptionally primitive and working conditions were also
very harsh.
Shockingly, in those days it was not unusual for entire families to be
Hunter Clifton I Like To Write Analysis
There are constant times in life when we to take a second look at something,
whether it is an object, a place, an idea, or even an idea. Through this second look,
we get a different perspective about it, either positive or negative. In my interview
with Hunter Clifton, I asked her if she likes to write. She answered, I like to write. It
seems common at first to just like to write, but if you asked her eight years ago if she
liked to write, she would have just plain out said No! Hunter grew up in Columbus
Ohio with a love for Jesus, serving others, and missions. Her desire to write, however,
took a while longer to develop. It required a little bit of time and a lot of God s
assistance. Her experience in writingstarts in Saint Brendan Middle School. During
this time, she joined a writing club. This club used to hold several competitions that
allowed writers to show their skill. Hunter competed in these. Unfortunately, she did
not win any of the competitions. She did not even receive... Show more content on

It was her that she wanted to go into ministry wanted to go to Evangel University.
God had other plans. He eventually led her to come here to Southeastern
University. One of her first classes was English Composition 1. She did not think
that it was going to be enjoyable, given her past encounters with writing. However,
this class was very different. Instead of just writing research papers, the professor
had her write creative papers. After so many years, she finally had the opportunity
to express her opinion, her ideas, and her beliefs. When she turned in her work, not
only did the professor admire it, despite some criticisms, but the professor also
encouraged her to keep doing better. This was exactly what she needed. She finally
saw writing in its truest form, as an opportunity to utter her creative abilities, rather
than as a burden of simply typing words until they just become good enough to turn

What Constitutes An Artifact Of Empire What constitutes an artifact of empire Structures that memorialize the nation s imperial gains and losses Introduction Public monuments and literature share a lot in common. At first sight, it might be difficult to relate one to the other. However, deeply embedded in them they share a motif: an imagined community. They embrace a sense of belonging; they represent a nation or an empire. It is physically impossible for a person to meet every one of his fellow nationals; time and space prevents it. So how can that person know that there are actually millions like him inside a given country s borders? By representation. That representation can come in different ways. Two of them are memorials and literature. More so, the imagined community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dracula depicts London as the brain of the British Empire, a centre that could be invaded by contamination and disease. In this way, Dracula was used to ignite fears among the British people. If compared to the over use of terrorism threats by George W. Bush and other political figures, leading powers and empires feed off fears. Fearful population usually accept drastic measures to continue their domination, and Dracula is a figure of that: how fear was used to continue the domination of the British Empire. As with terrorism, Dracula is an external threat, an imagined enemy whose promise is to destroy an empire. Dracula is feared economically in a period where capitalism was emerging and where dominance over colonies was of utmost importance. DraculaВґs voyage to the west, to London not only the capital of the British Empire but the capital of the financial world , threatens to alter economic power balances. This can be seen today in London, for example, with the threat of the Greek economic crisis. Economic fear still haunt the streets of

All the residents gather in Tallmadge park at the beginning of the day, until night falls. It starts with a breakfast from the chamber of commerce and also mcdonalds, and a flag raising ceremony. There are different bands that play in the band stand, and many different tents where the locals can sell things, in a yard sale type way. There are also rides, and many trailers that sell fair food in them such as cotton candy, corn dogs, and fried dough. At night usually around ten, there is the annual firework show, which lasts about a half hour. It is one of the days where Mechanicville residents can get out and see each other and socialize with old friends, or a great activity to bring your kids to on a hot summer July day. Another activity they have here in Mechanicville is something called the duck derby. Many residents of Mechanicville gather down at the docks, behind the police station and race rubber ducks down the Hudson River and the ones that finish first get some sort of prize. A few years ago at one of the duck derby s a local high schoolteacher ended up creating a flash mob with a bunch of her students, something that no one was expecting to happen. At the duck derby there is also food, and music and usually a lot of people celebrate it, because that also takes place in the

His poems are depressing and they often revolve around death, loss of a loved one, or something of the like. He is genuinely a dark person. One example of figurative language in the poem Annabel Lee is when Poe wrote, And neither the angels in Heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea can ever dissever my soul from the soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee. His point in saying this is that his love for her is so great, that he feels other worldly powers such as angels or demons could not diminish or corrode his love for her. A second example of Poe s figurative language in the poem Annabel Lee, is when poe wrote, I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love I and my Annabel Lee With a love that the Seraphs in Heaven Coveted her and me. • 10. The Concept of Neoliberalism Neoliberalism Neoliberalism is a concept which states that both politics and economics need to be reevaluated to respond to the sociology and the psychology of the people that are affected. This type of social structure demands that the economic system must become less strict, and advocates more free trade and open markets. According to Paul Treanor, Neoliberalism is a philosophy in which the existence and operation of a market are valued in themselves, separately from any previous relationship with the production of goods and services (Fish). One of the most important components of neoliberalism is the removal of big government from the business world and the allowance of state owned enterprises to be controlled by private citizens. Neoliberalism was a term coined by Alexander Rustow who defined it as the priority of the price mechanism, the free enterprise, the system of competition and a strong and impartial state (Mirowski 13). The basic thesis behind neoliberalism is that the government needs to evacuate their position as dominator of enterprise. Businesses should be controlled by the people and the government s function in industry only to protect the individual participants. Chris Harman writes: This ideology contended that free market economies will run smoothly, steadily producing more wealth. Any problems that arise are supposedly a result of unnatural monopolies (especially in the labour market), which prevent the free movement of prices and wages pulling
  • 11. Stereotypes In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld The image of a person is often something that gets judged very quickly in society. People often see others and instantly think of something about that person. Men, women and children are all outcast for many different reasons. Society judges people for traits including, skin colour, gender, hair color, and body type. The media and society constantly make people feel bad about the way they look. In Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld, the main theme is about finding one s identity in a world that already has one made up for them. Despite this theme, the characters in the novel do not strive to overcome society s stereotypes. This line shows how the specials have very little emotions and feelings. They have a mission and they will do anything to achieve it. They do not look for anything to change and if it were up to them nothing ever

Actually it is not so much of a battle as it is a total, one sided bombardment of this country. This is an attempt from a U.N. sponsored, Saudi led coalition that is trying to persuade Houthi rebels into thinking reasonably and diplomatically by bombing them back into the Stone Age. In order to fully understand what brought the U.N. to a point of agreement on engagement of this operation, it is important to understand the recent history of Yemen and the events leading up to this conflict. The city of Riyadh was eventually forced to recognize Yemen s republican government. Now as then, Riyadh sees the struggle in Syria as a defining moment. As the leader of the Sunni Muslim world, it perceives an opportunity to check what it sees as Iranian plans to encircle the kingdom with hostile Shiite dominated regimes. As the war has taken on a more sectarian character, the usually reserved foreign minister, Prince Saud al Faisal, has described Assad s onslaught against his own people as genocide and Syrian lands as being under occupation a clear reference to the presence of Iranian and Hezbollah forces. It is no secret that the Saudis are supplying elements of the Syrian opposition with weapons. They all but admitted as much when the prince said a few weeks ago that if the international community is not willing to do anything, then they must allow Syrians to defend themselves. The Saudis will use all tools available to oust Assad, while taking measures to ensure that the weapons they re supplying to the rebels do not fall into the hands of extremists. Nevertheless, following the chemical attack on civilians near Damascus last month, the Saudi foreign minister spoke candidly about the inability of the Arab nations to put a stop to Assad s campaign through force of arms, adding that any military effort to do so would likely involve actors outside the region. Residents in nursing homes are more likely to fall due to their age, chronic health conditions, medication, or change in the environment after admission to the facility. The people who provide care every day in nursing homes know firsthand how critical falling can be to the health of the residents they care for. Fall prevention is critical in order to decrease falls in nursing homes. There are programs that are designed to help nursing home staff members identify the reason for resident fall. These programs give a preventive measure that assures accuracy and sensitivity of patients risk from falling. The Falls Management Program (FMP) is one of these programs. The Falls Management Program (FMP) is a multifaceted quality improvement initiative that is designed to assist nursing homes, it includes assessment, individualized care planning, resident monitoring, and the elimination of environmental safety hazards (Taylor, J., Parmelee, P., Brown, H., Ouslander, J., 2005). FMP also improves care processes and outcomes through educational, staff training and quality improvement tools and ongoing consultation by qualified falls nurse. There are several reasons why FMP is significant. Research shows that about half of the nursing home residents in the U.S. fall each year and it is estimated that 1 in 3 of those who fall will fall in the future. Falling

I met Eva at her apartment, which was part of an assisted living community. Eva is of European decent and identifies herself as an active and proud member of the Lutheran Church. Eva lives alone and is reportedly able to attend to all of her activities of daily living. When I met with Eva I was mindful of the ecological model of Systems Theory. I sought to understand Eva through the complex interactions of behavior, biology and environment that had occurred over the last nine decades. Eva answers the door and invites me in. I follow her to the kitchen where we sit at the kitchen table. She insists on pouring me a cup of her favorite tea. The steam from the kettle is screaming, I m ready! Eva is able to navigate her cozy kitchen by supporting her balance chair to counter to stove, stove to chair to tea cup. The tremor that was apparent as she scooped the loose tea into the pot, gives way to the steadiness needed to poor the boiling water. She returns the kettle to the stove and tells me we are three minutes away from the perfect cup of Earl Gray. Eva tells me about the day she was introduced to the Light of Day Tea Company and their Earl Gray tea. She describes the robust flavor and creamy aftertaste. She tells how it took 89 years for her to find the perfect cup of tea; tea worthy of occupying her cup every afternoon. I find myself in awe of how elaborately detailed Eva s process of tea making is.

Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God was quite pleased to observe as his servant maintained integrity in his dealing. The Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satanthe Devil. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily concerned with selfish interests. God decided to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to test the patriarch s motives. In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the debates between Job and his friends. Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse God and died. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to intensify his physical attacks on Job. Job was struck with a debilitating illness that subjected him to constant pain. Members of the community also shunned him. Later, three friends of Job came to visit him. Compare And Contrast The Twins Of Siam And The Elephant Man Comparative Analytical Text Essay The Twins of Siam and The Elephant Man Essay question: People who are physically disabled all lead similar lives. Do the Twins of Siam and the Elephant Man show this to be true? The Elephant Man is the true story of Joseph Merrick s life from Tim Vicary s novel. Joseph Merrick was born in London in 1862 and later, he developed a disease that made him disabled. The Twins of Siam is a short text about Change and Eng, who were the conjoined twins, born in Thailand in 1811. These characters in both stories are all disabled and lived in the 18th century. Even though they all experience physical disabilities, Joseph Merrick s life does not have a lot in common with Chang and Eng s. While they are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph s life is more miserable since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. However, Joseph Merrick and the twins all have some happiness experiences in their lives, but he experiences more loneliness and misery than Chang and Eng. Although these three men feel frustrated because of their disabilities, they all find some activities that they enjoy and make the best of their lives. While Merrick, Chang and Eng are all physically disabled and stared at by others, Joseph s life is more pathetic since he suffers more abuse than the twins do. Unfortunately, Merrick has been humiliated and treated terribly by a man called Silcock in his early days, and he has no way of escaping his miserable life. When

Separation of Powers in the Commowealth This doctrine was formulated by French philosopher Montesquieu who theorized that abuse of powers by the three branches would be checked through separating the branches functionally and physically. This means no branch should perform function of the other and no person can hold office simultaneously in the branches. However, there are instances where state courts have influences from the decisions of cases in the Commonwealth courts. In the ruling made in the case Kable v Director of public prosecution1996 189 CLR51.This case forbid states court exceeding federal jurisdiction. Therefore, State Supreme courts rely on decisions of federal courts and vice versa (Harris, 2013). In the separation of powers there is the doctrine that courts cannot be vested with non judicial power and federal judicial powers cannot be vested in a state court. It goes that if a court exercises non judicial power, then separation of powers will be violated. The states do not have explicit separation of powers in their respective constitutions. Parliament is able to vest judicial federal powers with non judicial powers so long as they do not undermine their integrity. States courts can still exercise their independence since they have some discretion in some matters. Looking at the separation of powers in States such as Queensland, there are unique features. Commonwealth Constitution confers separation of powers but States do not have constitutional separation of powers. Influence of executive on
  • 22. Intermolecular Forces Essay Intermolecular forces are the attractive and/or repulsive forces among independent particles, such as molecules, atoms, or ions, within a sample of matter. These forces differ from chemical bonds, or intramolecular forces, because chemical bonds exist between the atoms of a single molecule. For example, intermolecular forces could be described as the forces that attract many water molecules together, while chemical bonds refer to the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms of a single water molecule. Chemical bonds are also generally more permanent and stronger than intermolecular forces. There are various types of intermolecular forces, all which differ in strength. These forces include: ion ion forces, dipole dipole forces, ion dipole forces, ion induced dipole, dipole induced dipole, and London dispersion forces. William Shakespeare Do you agree/disagree/partially agree that Charlemagne was an example of all three? Clovis, king of the Franks, established the Merovingian Empire in 481. Then, in 511, he split his empire between his four sons. The kings in the Merovingian line continued to hand down their thrones to their later generations, which slowly started to make them weak. This was because they were using nepotism instead of giving positions based on merit. So, after time, positions called Mayors of the Palace were formed. Mayors of the Palace, according to the dictionary, were people of a line of hereditary administrative lieutenants to the Merovingian kings who eventually took over royal function and title in the Frankish kingdoms . Over time, the descendants of Clovis became to be known as Do Nothing kings , because they relied on the Mayors of the Palace to do work. The Do Nothing kings began to have virtually no power, but they still held on to their title as king. One of the most famous Mayors of the Palace was Charles Martel. His son, Pepin became the Frankish king. Pepin s son was Charlemagne. Every living creature needs the forest for oxygen, that is what the trees are for, but if we keep cutting them for logging, cattle raising for soy, and many other reasons we do what we do, then how will we breathe? On the other hand, they compose an enormous carbon reservoir and their elimination contributes to the aggravation of the greenhouse effect generated mainly by the use of fossil fuels. When they are burnt or cut down, the carbon that had been stored up for centuries in the forests is incorporated to the atmosphere, increasing the level of carbon concentration in it and aggravating the greenhouse effect. We are all to blame for this problem, and it is so sad to see such a beautiful natural element of our planet being destroyed. Even though the importances of these forests have been made, deforestation has not slowed down. The FAO of the United States (Food and Agriculture Organization) shows that deforestation rates increased 8.5% from 2000 2005 when compared with the 1990 s. The loss of primary forests expanded approximately by 25% over the same period. Nigeria and Vietnam s rate of primary forest loss has doubled since the 1990 s and Peru s rate has tripled. One painting made around 1476 1478, by Giovanni Bellini, entitled Saint Francis in the Desert (but also referred to as Saint Francis in Ecstasy ), was created in Venice using oil and tempera on poplar panel. I am continuously striving to become the best nurse and patient advocate that I can be, by implementing more than just conventional treatment within each of my patient s plan of care. My interest in the use of alternative therapies led me to develop the following question: In hospitalized preterm infants, does the use of massage therapy promote overall adaptation and development? Massage therapy is defined as, a systematic touch by human hands, which stimulates the tactile sense of the infant and which has been documented for several decades to have a positive effect on both full term and preterm infants (Abdallah et al., 2013, p. 663). The goal of this paper is to describe the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life and identify normal adaptation for the newborn and how these adaptations can affect a preterm infants development, identify different nonpharmacological interventions, including massage therapy and determine whether these techniques are effective in promoting adaptation and development of the preterm infant and if so, how do these therapies impact the preterm infant s overall development. Throughout the human experience, one of the most complex adaptations is the transition from intrauterine to
  • 41. Edgar Allan Poe s Short Story Grace Period A nuclear bomb, the weapon that ended World War II, the weapon that struck fear into everyone. If a nuclear bomb went off near you would you survive? Grace Period is a short story that hints toward a nuclear bomb exploding near the protagonist who the story tries to describe as you. It describes how the protagonist deals with it and how he responds to the situation. The article Nuclear Weapons Effects explains to you, the damage that a Nuclear bomb can do, tells you how you know if one goes off near you, and describes the technology behind the bomb. I will be writing about how the events in the short story Grace Period are connected to a nuclear bomb exploding. The first hint towards a bomb going off is the protagonist in the story sees a plane flying out from the city. In the article, it describes how you need to have a plane to drop the Nuclear bomb so the pilot can escape safely. Additionally, to do the most damage the bomb needs to explode before it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After he lingers for a bit, he looks out the window again and the pulse is much stronger. The protagonist probably witnessed the initial explosion of the bomb and possibly the initial formation of the mushroom cloud, but he cannot see the cloud as he is too far away. [You] see that the light is growing brighter and brighter and brighter. (Baker, 1989,p.9). In the story Grace Period he tries to call several people and places. Either the line was busy, or there was no answer. Except when he dials the scientists, who are in the bunker they do not believe him and hang up. The reason he experienced these issues, is because when the nuclear bomb is dropped it releases an electromagnetic pulse which destroys everything electronic. Which is why he could not reach out to anybody, except for the scientists as they were in a bunker the electromagnetic pulse (EMG) could not get to
  • 42. Human Knowledge On The Diversity Of Fish Wildlife Dr. Olaf L.F. Weyl is an ichthyologist from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity. The goal of his research is to develop human knowledge on the diversity of fish wildlife. According to Dr. Weyl, both quantitative and qualitative data on this subject was severely lacking. Any numerical data acquired was not necessarily accurate. Another worry of his, was the impact of introductions of recreational fishing species, such as carp, trout, and bass, on the native fish of Southern Africa. Dr. Weyl had many questions and performed many experiments on a variety of aquatic animals. Using go pros, scuba gear, drip stations, and nets, he and his students were able to gather and observe large amounts of fish for experiments. He tried really hard to emphasize how large the impact of non native species are on native species. In one experiment, a count of species in six separate pond less than 100 meters apart were taken. He encountered something odd so he took data from more ponds. After analyzing the data of many ponds, it became obvious that where there were no minnows there were bass. Where there were no bass, they found minnows. If bass ever invades a body of water, take over is total. There is no sharing. In another experiment, the hunting and eating habits of a semi aggressive native South African fish, kurper, was examined. Multiple kurper were captured and put in a tank. Different species of prey was then added. As the kurper hunted, they were videoed. It turns out

While there are studies that lead us to believe that the use of medical marijuana on cancer patients can actually help their recovery, it is also reported that the THC, can impair the body s immune system. Some methods of ingesting medical marijuana include, food and drink consumption, as well as smoking. Smoking can lead to respiratory problems due to the smoke, leaving the body with a weakness, possibly causing cancer in the lungs and respiratory tract. This can also lead to an increased risk of heart attacks. Overall, these side effects and long lasting impairments can be much more harmful than the possible positives of medical marijuana. To conclude, medical marijuana is beneficial but if used excessively side effects could occur. The group is for medical marijuana due to the fact that it can be used for tax purposes and it helps an ill person get through their pain. While we focus on the pros, we also understand the cons which include not being FDA approved, bringing on mental issues, and harming the immune system and other body systems. There may not be a definite side in society that is for or against this topic, but it is important to know that medical marijuana is used to lessen the pain for the patients that use
  • 45. Terrorism And The Threat Of Terrorism Terrorism has continuously been an ongoing danger all over the world. Threats pertaining to international security seem to be loosely organized and self financed groups or the extremist Islamist parties using religion as a pretext that pose threats to the U.S. and other allies. However, while most see terrorismas being international, domestic radicalism has become an ever increasing problem, specifically within the United States. Cross national links between specific terrorists groups are becoming greatly feared, due to the increasing growth in combat training, funding, technological transfer and political development. Uranium Enrichment, a byproduct in producing chemical weapons (WMD s) are becoming even greater in countries like North Korea, Syria and now Russia. With Iran being a major sponsor for terrorism and great influences like Al Qaeda forming groups desiring Uranium for the purposes of chemical warfarehas led nations to constant anxiety. Terrorists threats pertaining to both national and international security are tremendously serious. By means of rapid growth in technological advancement, weapons of mass destruction are gradually greater than that of the past. The world population is now faced with a serious dilemma. Terrorism, like viruses, is everywhere. There is a global perfusion of terrorism, which accompanies any system of domination as though it were its shadow, ready to activate itself anywhere, like a double agent (Baudrillard, 2013).
  • 46. Persuasive Essay On Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone National Park, untamed wild beauty. Stunning landscapes, beautiful waterfalls and rivers, breathtaking wildlife, and geothermal activity all come together to make Yellowstone an amazing place. People come from all over the world to witness the beauty of Yellowstone. It is a regulated national park for a reason, it is so amazing, so beautiful, so spectacular to not preserve it. It hosts bison, elk, deer, bald eagles, bears, moose, beavers, and amazing trout rivers, everything a perfect mountain ecosystem should hold. However now there is something else, something that is natural, was removed but has now returned, flourishing and benefiting its surroundings. Wolves, have been reintroduced into Yellowstone and have greatly benefited the area. These wolves have started a positive and beneficial renewal in the park. The reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park is beneficial because they created and natural and beneficial trophic cascade, other animals in the park benefited from the wolves, and because the land was able to regrow and flourish due to the wolves presence. Since the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone they have created an astounding and advantageous trophic cascade. A trophic cascade is an ecological phenomenon triggered by the addition or removal of top predators and involving reciprocal changes in the relative populations of predator and prey through a food chain. These often result in dramatic changes in ecosystem structure and nutrient cycling. In a three level food chain, an increase (or decrease) in carnivores causes a decrease (or increase) in herbivores and an increase (or decrease) in primary producers such as plants and phytoplankton according to briticanna (how to make better). The entire ecosystem was able to become whole again because the wolves, a key species, were reintroduced. Now this may seem weird, a predator comes into the area a begins to kill animals, how can this be beneficial in any way? Well the fact of the matter is that it is extremely beneficial. The reason being the problem in Yellowstone was the overpopulation of the elk. These elk had no predators, they were free to roam and reproduce, and they did this very well. Now elk are also a

The museum has an area, 140 meters underground, which has been adapted to demonstration the development and revolution in mining techniques through out the ages. It presents mining techniques from the early 19th century all the way through to the present day. The museum also houses an array of mining machinery and vehicles that has been conserved since its use, which are kept in a gallery above ground. Such machinery includes locomotives, BJD coal cutters, and a seventeen tonne Dosco Roadheader that was used to cut roadways underground. (National Coal Mining Museum, 2014) Equipment Types Coal had been in use far long before the 19th century, however, the arrival of the industrial revolution saw a boom in the demand for coal and as a result coal mining became an enormous and lucrative industry. Nonetheless, the equipment used in the early 19th century was still exceptionally primitive and working conditions were also very harsh. Shockingly, in those days it was not unusual for entire families to be

Through this second look, we get a different perspective about it, either positive or negative. In my interview with Hunter Clifton, I asked her if she likes to write. She answered, I like to write. It seems common at first to just like to write, but if you asked her eight years ago if she liked to write, she would have just plain out said No! Hunter grew up in Columbus Ohio with a love for Jesus, serving others, and missions. Her desire to write, however, took a while longer to develop. It required a little bit of time and a lot of God s assistance. Her experience in writingstarts in Saint Brendan Middle School. During this time, she joined a writing club. This club used to hold several competitions that allowed writers to show their skill. Hunter competed in these. Unfortunately, she did not win any of the competitions. She did not even receive... He eventually led her to come here to Southeastern University. One of her first classes was English Composition 1. She did not think that it was going to be enjoyable, given her past encounters with writing. However, this class was very different. Instead of just writing research papers, the professor had her write creative papers. After so many years, she finally had the opportunity to express her opinion, her ideas, and her beliefs. When she turned in her work, not only did the professor admire it, despite some criticisms, but the professor also encouraged her to keep doing better. This was exactly what she needed. She finally saw writing in its truest form, as an opportunity to utter her creative abilities, rather than as a burden of simply typing words until they just become good enough to turn
