NITLE Shared Academics: New Directions for Digital Collections by Mark ChristelNITLE
Two decades after the advent of the Web, digital collections are a regular part of academic library business. This seminar’s leaders reviewed some new approaches to digital collections taken by libraries at small colleges. In particular, they discussed collections developed around faculty teaching and research interests, student-created collections and exhibits, library publishing programs, and library support for digital field scholarship. In this seminar, Mark Dahl, NITLE fellow and director of the Aubrey R. Capacity Mapping: Re-imagining Undergraduate Business EducationNITLE
The public’s scrutiny of higher education may be at an all-time high. Whether it be parents questioning the value of a college degree, researchers scrutinizing learning outcomes, government officials tracking student debt, or employers evaluating job-readiness, educators face unprecedented pressure to prepare students for life outside of college. For business educators at liberal arts colleges, this external scrutiny is often matched by internal scrutiny from colleagues who question whether pre-professional programs even belong. Other concerns extend beyond the present and focus on preparing students not just for their first job, but on developing capacities for their whole life—personal, professional and civic. How might business faculty respond to this increased demand and multitude of pressures?
In the midst of this new reality, Mary Grace Neville, began a seven-year programmatic study. She led a multi-stakeholder inquiry and organized a national dialogue centered on the question: “What ought we be teaching at the undergraduate business level in order to be cultivating high integrity leaders for tomorrow’s rapidly changing, highly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world?” In this seminar, she introduced the capacity-mapping framework that has emerged from this work (and continues to evolve) and invited participants to consider various ways to integrate capacity development across an undergraduate business curriculum. Review the personal capacity map and consider these questions:
How do you set priorities and achieve balance within the curriculum?
How can business programs orient themselves so that they can be responsive to the constancy of change?
How can colleagues within institutions and across institutions collaborate to strengthen student preparedness?
How might technology support capacity development?

CCCOER OER Degree Research with Achieving the Dream, SRI Education, and rpk G...Una Daly
An OER-based degree, sometimes referred to as a Zero-Textbook-Cost degree, is a pathway to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned the courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) instead of traditional commercial textbooks and early research shows students are succeeding as well or better than peers in traditional courses while saving up to 25% on the cost of attendance. Additional research has shown that a college may be able to increase tuition revenue through increased student persistence and success in these pathways.
With the largest OER degree grant initiative of its kind launched last year at 38 colleges in 13 U.S. states, Achieving the Dream, has undertaken research to look at the academic and financial impact to students and their institutions. Grant partners SRI, along with partner rpk GROUP, is conducting research and evaluation to identify impact and cost as well as the facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model. Join us to hear from the researchers about methodology, benefits and challenges for colleges, and findings from the first semester of the grant.

The cost of textbooks has been identified as a major barrier for students completing their education. Colleges seeking to increase student retention and success are promoting the use of open educational resources and open textbooks to reduce costs and improve pedagogy. A key strategy for college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their best practices and other tactics for nurturing a national community of practice focused on open education.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 250 member colleges in 19 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at monthly online meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through our advisory listserve allows new members to quickly find and adopt the highest quality OER available. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues in higher education.

Accessibility of OERs for Diverse Learners and Guidelines for Dyslexia in Modern Language Learning
Join us for this webinar discussion on issues relating to accessibility of OERs for learners with diverse abilities. The discussion will focus on a number of questions such as: Is accessibility support in OERs ‘required’ or just ‘nice to have’? How can we achieve full inclusion of OERs without stifling openness and innovation? This will be set in the wider environment such as legal context, pedagogic agendas, and technical issues.

to how institutions support learning. Based on
the ongoing work of the Digital Visitors &
Residents project this session will explore the various 'modes of engagement' students operate in online for their learning and their perceptions of credibility in the digital environment.
This is two presentations merged into one, the first highlighting resources from the Buidling Capacity Programme, the second looking at using resources such as Scenario Planning for dealing with change.
The 'success' of the web, the government's push to get everyone connected and ongoing funding cuts all put pressure on universities to employ technology to increase efficiency. Digital technology is often promoted as a panacea which fails only because not everyone 'learns how to use it properly'. It is clear how technology can continue to improve administrative processes but its use more directly in teaching and learning can be more difficult to evaluate?.
Many want technology to be so intuitive that it seamlessly melds with their existing practice and 'disappears into use' while others see it as an opportunity to disrupt the status quo and forge new ways of working. Alongside this there is a fear that incoming students will expect certain web-like technologies to be integrated into their learning and that institutions will appear out-moded if they don't engage with the latest platforms.
In this talk I will explore the disappear/disrupt continuum and the potential digital technology has to support teaching and learning beyond being a simple content delivery system. I will also discuss the Digital Visitors & Digital Residents principle which can be used as a tool to assess how students might react to certain forms of technology thereby avoiding the 'scatter-gun' approach to using new platforms.
In September I was privileged to be able to go out to Birdlife Malta’s Raptorcamp to support their monitoring of illegal hunting. From my perspective the trip was possible thanks in part to funding from the League Against Cruel Sports and the support of my wife, Heather.
This is in part a personal account, with many thanks to all the people I met and went out monitoring with.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
