Comparing Kent State And The Living Room War
The Shooting of Kent State and The Living Room War The shooting of Kent State University on May
4, 1970 marked a point in the war that divided the nation and brought attention to the war on a scale
never seen before. Fighting on the battleground was brought to America s soil through the power of
television and as the battle continued, emotions on the homefront intensified. The executive decision
of President Richard Nixon initiated the protests and swung the opinion of the use of military force in
Vietnam by his April 30 announcement that he had sent American forces into Cambodia (Reichard).
President Nixon s decision of sending forces into Cambodia sparked the protests on many campuses,
one of them being Kent State, leading to the shooting and killing of four students, however only two
of the students shot and killed were involved in the protests. The killing... was another important
turning point for many GI and veteran activists (Moser 108). The Living Room war also ... Show more

During this time period, the use of television boomed, and for the first time was depended on and
trusted significantly more than newspapers. [Even though] the coverage of the war was significant, a
relatively small portion of the coverage was actually combat footage (Anderson). Although producers
captured thousands of hours worth of combat footage, they could not push out all of the coverage they
captured, The purpose being not to avoid showing the ugly side of war, but rather to avoid offending
families of war victims (Hallin). The media did not intentionally try to turn america against the war, to
the contrary the media saw the war necessary to national security. However, as the war continued on in
vietnam and watched daily in living rooms across the country, both the american soldiers and the
public became disillusioned as they did not see an end to the war

Physical And Social Context Of The Building
Examine the physical and social context of the building
The Glass House is a building in which personal qualities are a vital component of the construction
framework. The house is focusing on the correlation between an individual and buildings. There are
architectural rules including conventions that establish a guide and maintain traditional approaches to
building structures. However, Phillip Johnson operates against these standards of design rules and
highlights the modernistic period due to the buildings orientation and non traditional materials. The
structure of the house is revealing the materials and aesthetic qualities.
The house further highlights that Phillip Johnson works in a non social vacuum. However, he reflects
several aspects of social structures. Having these aspects influences and demonstrates how, when, time
and place the structure was built. Glass House remains located in a tropical environment away from
street view, due to it being secluded and isolated. The primary materials applied consist of paints,
glass, bricks and furniture. The physical context of the environment constantly shifts the efficiency
and sustainability of the materials. Resulting in a constant change in colour and odour, mainly due to
environmental factors such as change of temperature.
The house being secluded from public display enables the house to be private and only exposed to the
tropical environment. The interior of the glass house has a cylindrical brick structure that

The Bible And The Word inspire Essay
The Bible and the Word quot;Inspire quot;
According to the Random House Dictionary, the word inspire means quot;to infuse an animating,
quickening, or exalting influence into, or to communicate or suggest by a divine influence. quot; This
definition indicates, when applied to the scripture, that the stories and writings in the Bible did not
come solely from the minds of the respective authors, but rather from a divine source. This suggests
that the authors were scribes, reproducing what was instilled in them by God. This idea is
strengthened by looking at distinct examples from the scripture that show that scripture is inspired,
and not made up. By using the form of criticism known as literary criticism, we can analyze certain ...

God can be viewed as an indirect author, and the inspiration for scripture.
quot;We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and the comings
of our Lord Jesus Christ but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. quot; quot;Above all you must
understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation. For
prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along
by the Holy
Spirit. quot; From the standpoint of a literary critic, these two passages represent the question at hand
as to whether or not scripture is inspired. Literary criticism looks at the passage as a whole, and reads
what it says, just as a normal person would. Using this method, we see easily that scripture is in fact
inspired, because it states that there were no cleverly invented stories, but rather God s own words.
God s plans for his people are carefully laid out, and there is much doubt that He would entrust
average people to teach others about
His word without careful explanation as to exactly what it is, and how it came to be. This is why much
of the Bible, especially the Pentateuch, tells the historical story of the

Problems Faced By The And Corporate Culture
4.The problems of the mergers in technology industry During the integration process after merging,
the clash of the human resources and the corporate culture will arise. Merger always takes risk on
some extent, so some employees will feel unsafe about their job, which will cause the lost of the
human resources. What s more, to optimize the new employee structure and reduce labor cost, amount
of employees will face to be laid off. Such a large personnel change will cut down the investors trust,
because the investor will suspect the stability of the new combined company. Even two similar
technology companies still have different corporate culture which can represent the companies brand
images and affect the customers loyalty. They may produce the similar products, but they may differ
in the business ideas and background. Hence, how to integrate two companies corporate culture in
order to exert the joint corporate value is difficult for the new combined company. If the new
combined company abandoned one of the company s corporate culture, they will lose part of
customers who already lose the faith to the company. How to integrate the two technology companies
technology is important for the development of the new combined company in the future after
merging. If two companies have lots of overlapping business and their technologies level are different,
then the new company must consider integrating the technology to complement and balance the
technology level so that can

The Theme of Mental Health Illustrated in Woolf s Mrs....
Mrs. Dalloway , by Virginia Woolf is a derivative text of The Hours , written by Michael
Cunningham. The novels both share an important theme of mental health. The circumstances of
mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in
Mrs. Dalloway and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf in The Hours show the strongest
symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and treatments these characters face are in direct result
of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and treatments. The
clearest illness was that of Septimus, in Mrs. Dalloway . Septimus suffered from shell shock, a result
of the First World War. This illness in turn brought about an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

On the other hand, the sinister Sir William Bradshaw wishes Septimus were in a rest home and to
undergo re programming. Bradshaw s awareness is especially revealing of the attitude of some doctors
at the time:
Health we must have; and health is proportion; so that when a man comes into your room and says he
is Christ... ...and has a message... ...and threatens... ...to kill himself, you invoke proportion; order rest
in bed; rest in solitude; silence and rest; rest without friends, without books; without messages; six
months rest... (Page 110).
Woolf s own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw s thoughts. Woolf portrays
doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are shown through Woolf s characteristic stream of
consciousness style.
Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on
you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew are
applied. Human nature is remorseless. (Page 108).
Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus thoughts are portrayed. The
thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless victim. When understanding the way Septimus is
being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf s use of stream
of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. In The Hours Richard, a gay poet dying of AIDS

Conference Chair For The Asian American Student Union
Conference Chair AASU As the conference chair for the Asian American Student Union, I
spearheaded a school wide conference on Asian American issues and advocacy. This conference
brought in speakers from across the United States, including members of the U.S. government, and
had over 100 participants. In addition, I led a group of twenty students to the East Coast Asian
American Student Union conference at Columbia University. I developed preparatory pre departure
workshops, handled scholarship distribution, and outlined travel logistics. As a member of the AASU
board, I had the opportunity to develop my own general body meeting on the topic of Asian American
portrayal in the media. My position as Conference Chair was my first large responsibility in college.
This position developed my interpersonal and team working skills; it also instilled the importance of
time management and organizational habits. Through the inspiration of my peers, I became committed
to bring creativity and innovation to all events that I planned. This position allowed me to explore my
passion of minority advocacy though the Asian/Asian American population and serve as a catalyst for
the promotion of education and awareness of Asian history and culture. Our greatest accomplishment
was the development and passing of the Asian American Studies Minor at the University of Florida.
Our first step was garnering support from the community through assembling a committee of students

Escitalopram Case Study
Escitalopram is an antidepressant approved by the FDA for treatment of major depressive disorder
(MDD) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Development of escitalopram, achieved by
collaboration of Lundbeck and Forest Laboratories, began in the summer of 1997 and took only 3.5
years. The first patients participated in studies for marketing authorization in summer of 1999, and the
first clinical results were published in December 2000. A year later, in December 2001, Lundbeck
received Swedish approval for the treatment of depression and panic disorder. By May of 2002, the
product had been approved in many European countries thanks to the European Mutual Recognition
Procedure. Meanwhile, in March 2001 Forest submitted a New Drug Application ... Show more

Therefore, escitalopram has been claimed to be a more potent antidepressant than a racemic mixture,
citalopram, of the two enantiomers. Researchers from Lundbeck tried to explain this phenomenon by
proposing that escitalopram enhances its own binding by interacting with another allosteric site on the
transporter. However, additional research showed that (R) citalopram also enhances the binding of
escitalopram, so allosteric interaction cannot explain the observed counteracting effect. Of the SSRIs
currently on the market, escitalopram has the highest affinity for the serotonin transporter, and thus
has a relatively mild side effect profile. Some of the more commonly reported side effects are
diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, ejaculatory disorder, nausea, insomnia, and delayed ejaculation. More
include anorgasmia, constipation, fatigue, dizziness, and decreased libido. Many side effects affect the
reproductive system, probably because serotonin also plays a role in sexual desire and function. Other
SSRIs that may be used as antidepressants include Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil, and Prozac. Other common
antidepressants include Wellbutrin and Xanax, and Abilify is commonly used in combination with

Recount of a Mock Trial
The central issue in the mock trial was whether the payment of life insurance from Prime Global

Insurance s policy is illustrated clearly in their terms and conditions that the one million dollar payout

the two year time period as outlined in the insurance company s policy. The prosecution and defense

MILTARY SUCCESS
Militaries have been a part of societies for millenniums. Armed forces have been used for the good of
empires, but also for the bad. Many empires have risen to great power through their military but, the
ones in this essay mastered the use of armed forces. Militaries have shaped empires, even in some
cases being a way of live for that society. Even in the beginning of civilizations armies were beginning
to pop up. The use of violence towards other tribes, and groups of people lead to the development of
standing armies. This also led to the establishment of taxation to support food, equipment, and
payment to the soldiers of ever increasing militaries. It is interesting to look into how militaristic
cultures have come up and many cases dominated certain areas. It s fascinating to see why some
empires military have been so successful and won many of battles. In this essay I will talk about three
different empires and how they became successful over time. These three militaristic cultures are all
respected in their own rights. First is the Assyrian Empire. Its military might started around 900b.c.e
on the Tigris river were they would later start a conquest which they controlled most of the Middle
East. Also I will look into Sparta, which the Spartans are considered some of the fiercest warriors to
have lived. Their dominance reached its height around 600b.c.e. In this essay I will also talk about the

Author: Judith Caesar
Allusions to Nikolai V. Gogol and his short story The Overcoat permeate Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The
Namesake, beginning with Gogol s being the name the protagonist is called through most of the book.
Yet few of the reviewers of the novel mentioned Nikolai Gogol at all in their discussions of the novel,
except to describe the protagonist Gogol s loathing of his name, or to quote without comment or
explanation Dostoevski s famous line, We all came out of Gogol s Overcoat. So far, no one has looked
beyond the surfaces to examine the significance of the allusions to Gogol that are so much a part of
the fabric of Lahiri s novel.

gives you some type of motivation to be one of them. The song brings out this message to bring

The depth of the lake appears to have no end, as if anything would get lost if caught in its rough
currents. Thick and high grass cover the water s edge. The air becomes thick and icy, making it hard

Food And Religion
Secondly, there are many variations in the kind of practices associated with food. These practices can
be traced down to their religious beliefs or from their cultural heritage. Again, given the diversity of
cultural backgrounds of the Indians in Singapore, it is expected that there will be a plethora of
practices that people follow. During the field trip to the Burhani mosque, I noticed how there is the
practice of eating salt before and after food. Further research reveals that Muslims believe that salt is
very beneficial for body health and it can protect you from many diseases if you take it right before

As such, it is a very common sight among the Hindus who traditionally follow the custom of
sprinkling water on the food before eating their meal and it is believed to be an act of purification.
Cultural belief also affects the way people eat. For instance, among all the Indians, cutlery is not used
to eat food. They think that food is meant to be a whole sensory experience, so an eating habit in the
traditional Indian culture is to consume Indian foods such as curry, rice and naan bread by picking it
up using the hands. Bread is often used to scoop up the curry sauce and rice, and it is dipped into
traditional soups such as daal, a lentil based soup. Indian people are supposed to eat with their right
hands, because eating with the left hand is thought to be unclean. While it is still common to find
Singaporean Indians eating with hands, it is more likely they will do so in the comfort of their own
homes or in restaurants where they can wash their hands before and afterward. Many Indians now do

Dances With Wolves And Avatar
Dances with Wolves and Avatar: Similar but Different
Dances with Wolves and Avatar are thought to be very different, but they are actually more similar
than viewers may realize. First off, these are two must see films! The viewer walks away with much
more than just having seen a movie. Both of these movies encourage cultural understanding, motivate,
and teach individuality.
Dances with Wolves and Avatar are alike in plot and cultural significance. These two films are alike in
plot because in both films, two men, John Dunbar and Jake Sully, willingly put themselves into a
completely new culture and lifestyle. They learn to adapt to the differences and learn a new way of life
in order to survive. For example, in the movies Dances with Wolves and Avatar, John Dunbar and Jake
Sully had to learn each tribe s way of life, such as their language, hunting, and self defense.
Eventually, the two men are recognized as part of a tribe, for John the Sioux Indian Tribe and for Jake
the Na vi Tribe.
These two films are alike in cultural significance because they both show the viewer not to believe all
that is said about individuals, races, and cultures. In the two films, both tribes were first looked at as
evil enemies, but once the two men each took the time to get to know the individuals and the tribes as
a whole, they realized that it was all just a lie. The Sioux and Na vi were actually nice people who just
felt threatened by the outsiders. The tribes needed to look intimidating so

The Effects Of Children After Parental Incarceration
A Literature Review: The Effects on Children After Parental Incarceration
Prisons have been around for centuries and in many countries the prison population has grown
quickly. The prisoners health, behavior and well being have been focal points in many social concerns,
however; incarceration goes beyond the prisoners experience. It touches employment after
incarceration, social stigma, and families and communities that have been affected by incarceration,
especially a child with incarcerated parents. That is what Joseph Murray, David P. Farrington, and
Ivana Sekol focus on, the forgotten victims of crime (Matthews 1983). It is no surprise that children
will experience many hardships emotionally and socially during their parental incarceration. This
article aims to describe the associations between parental incarceration and children s antisocial
behavior, mental health, drug use, and low educational performance prior to this event. The United
States has the highest rate of imprisonment and has the largest prison population in all of the world.
According to Glaze, about half of U.S. prisoners are parents of children under 18. Recent studies have
noted that there are long term effects toward parental incarceration of children showing undesirable
effects . In one study of 411 boys, those who experienced parental incarceration within their first 10
years of their life had double the risk for antisocial behavior, internalizing problems, and other adverse
outcomes up to

The Poem On Not Shoplifting Louise Bogan s The Blue Estuaries
Author Julia Alvarez conveys the speaker s discoveries, such as the fact that the book The Blue
Estuaries is different from other books of poetry, the speaker s thoughts as they are reading the poems,
and the speaker s motivations to not steal the book using poetic devices in the poem On Not
Shoplifting Louise Bogan s The Blue Estuaries . Within the poem we see examples of alliteration,
selection of detail, imagery, and similes which help to depict the speaker s discoveries.
The first stanza captures the speaker s initial reaction and discovery of the book of poetry itself. Upon
analyzing the cover, the speaker discovers that the book The Blue Estuaries is different from other
books in the same genre. Alvarez uses a line of alliteration,

Similarities Between Jack And Delaney
Throughout this section, the author is showing how dissimilar peoples perspectives may be on such
issues that may or may not involve their immediate life. The author is showing how certain situations
may change your entire outlook on issues. I found it very interesting how similar the two situations
turned out to be. In the first instance of an argument between Jack and Delaney. They both made very
valid points to each other. Delany tried to get Jack to realize how racist and discriminating he was
being towards the issue of illegal immigrants. On page 104 just before the quote from Delaney, Jack

Horses Reflect The Thematic Idea Of Freedom In Horses
In the book when the emperor was divine, the motif of horses reflect the thematic idea of freedom. In
the book the Japanese Americans have been interned which means their freedom have been taken
away and horses are used to represent that freedom. In the beginning of the book the Japanese
Americans were placed in internment camps. The little boy in the book long to be free, just like the
horse. The spaniards had brought them over hundreds of years ago and now there were thousands of
horses just roaming around, wild . This quote shows how free the horses really are and this is why
they symbolize freedom.

Macbeth Good Vs Evil Essay
Can the evil part of a man overcome his good heart? The Tragedy of Macbeth is a Drama written by
William Shakespeare that takes place in Scotland, England. In the story, the main character, Macbeth,
kills King Duncan to become King. He is so blind with his evilness that he does not see that his reign
of power will come to an end. The theme, good vs. evil, shows one just how quick another can have a
change of heart through Macbeth s conflicts with himself, his wife, and the son of the King. To begin
with, Macbeth has had internal good vs. evil issues. Macbeth contemplates about killing King Duncan
when he says First, as I am his Kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed; then, as his
host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself. (Act I, scn vii, ln 13
16) Here, Macbeth is saying that he should not be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Malcolm is King Duncan s son and he wants to take the throne back from Macbeth when he says
Already at a point, was set forth. Now we ll together, and the chance of goodness be like our
warranted quarrel. (Act IV, scn iii, ln 135 137) Malcolm is prepared and hopes that their success
equals the justice of their cause. Malcolm is hopeful when he says Tis his main hope, for where there
is advantage to be given both more and less have given him the revolt, and none serve with him but
constrained things whose hearts are absent too. (Act VI, scn vi, ln 10 14) With this, Malcolm is
hopeful because Macbeths men will be in battle physically but not in spirit. After reading the play, the
reader realizes how good vs. evil can overturn one another. Macbeth and Lady Macbeths evil plan
were stopped by Malcolm. Macbeth ended up dead and Lady Macbeth was so consumed by guilt that
she ended up taking her own life. Malcolm became King of Scotland in the end. Therefore, this
convincing evidence proves that the evil part of a man can overcome his good

Characteristics Of A Representative Democracy
I. Introduction
Though the modern academic may describe a political regime as a democracy , what they almost
always imply is that said political regime is a representative democracy. A representative democracy
obtains its legitimacy from the agency of the people; for a democracy to be representative, officials are
elected to represent the interests of their citizens and are thus accountable to both the rules of political
institutions and the needs of their constituents. The most basic facets to a representative democracy
such as free and fair elections and strong competition between political parties are cornerstones to the
structuring of a representative democracy, and yet there are cases within the past century in which
representative democracies with elections and competitive political parties descend into authoritarian
regimes. So though the election of representatives is paramount to modern democracies, there are
other factors that constitute what Leonardo Morlino calls the qualities of democracy. Morlino
subdivides the qualities of a democracy into rule of law, electoral accountability, institutional
accountability, competition, participation, freedom and equality, and responsiveness.
There is no denial that all seven of these criteria Morlino are essential to the establishment and
maintenance of a representative democracy. However, I would like to argue that four of the most
important aspects to assessing the quality of a democracy are independent branches of

Spina Bifida Pregnancy Disorder
Have you ever heard of the disorder spina bifida? Well, if you have not, you should learn many
interesting facts about this particular defect. Spina bifida is the most common neural birth disorder;
affecting a little over 1,500 babies every year, in the United States alone. There are three stages of
spina bifida, spina bifida occulta, Meningocele, and Myelomeningocele. The last stage,
Myelomeningocele , is the worst stage of spina bifida.
Scientists do not know why spina bifida occurs in newborns, but they do believe it is caused by a
variety of factors during the first few months of the pregnancy. These factors include radiation, genetic
mutations, the use of drugs or alcohol, etc. Doctors can identify this disorder before the baby is born

they may suffer from depression, or be very distant from their peers. Spina bifida has very little life

Compare And Contrast Renaissance Music And Medieval Music
The Medieval period began in 500 A.D. and ended in 1450 A.D. During this time in particular, the
Catholic Church had significant influence on how music was used and created. Sacred music, for
example, was most prevalent because of this. Due to the religious nature of this period, music in the
church had to adhere to very specific regulations, some of which included prayers such as plainchants
or Gregorian chants. A single melody without harmony, or one musical part sung together in unison, is
called a Monophonic melody, which was sung primarily by monks. Some time later, around 900 A.D.,
the using of two melodic lines was permitted by the church, this music was called organum. A low,
continuous note called a drone, was sung at the same time as the main melody. The two melodies were
often moving in contrasting motion to each other. By the Late Medieval period, 1100 A.D., the music
of the church had shifted from monophonic to more polyphonic, often two or more varying parts. The
Renaissance period, from 1450 A.D. to 1600 A.D., comprised of two main types of music, sacred and
secular. In comparison with the Medieval period, where music was usually reserved for church
purposes, the Renaissance period allowed music to expand beyond the church into upper aristocratic
society. Sacred music included motets and mass, while secular included madrigals, instrumental and
dance music. Motets initially came about during the late Medieval period, but grew sizably during the

Essay on Issues of Tempo and Mode in Evolution
There are many ways to explain how Earth and everything else came to be. Such as,
Uniformitarianism, Catastrophism, Gradualism, and Punctuated Equilibrium. Generally,
Uniformitarianism and Catastrophism are grouped together while Punctuated Equilibrium and
Gradualism are grouped together separately from Uniformitarianism and Catastrophism. Gradualism
and Punctuated Equilibrium are usually looked at through a biblical stand point rather than how
Uniformitarianism and Catastrophism are looked at from the opposite view.
The theory of Uniformitarianism states that everything happens gradually and what we see now in the
present time, took many years to become this way. It also has a natural law that says that what was

Whewell was a scholar from the University of Cambridge. He used it to help explain evolution since
at the time evolution was supported by Noah s Ark. Since, Noah s Ark was used as an explanation for
mass extinction. There is also Catastrophism in this group and its explanation is that some of Earths
features and events like mountains, valleys, floods, and mass extinctions were caused by very
dramatic and harmful events. How it relates to Uniformitarianism is that Uniformitarianism is slow
gradual changes like erosion, and can cause catastrophic events later on. Such as, glaciers melting, and
forming tsunamis and floods, killing off species catastrophically. They are also much related because
they relate to the idea of cause and effect. They are also basically anti creationist and agree that many
events have to happen over long periods of time not in all just one moment. However, there is also
gradualism and punctuated equilibrium to support the creationist side. Gradualism and punctuated
equilibrium explain how species go through evolutionary change. Gradualism is belief that changes
occur, or ought to occur, slowly in the form of gradual steps, another topic related to gradualism is
incrementalism. Gradualism supports how species go through evolutionary changes over short and
longer periods of time. Gradualism is also very popular in politics, it is one of the defining features in
conservatism and reformism,

Skinner vs. Bandura
Behaviorism has been a major school of thought in psychology since 1913, when John B. Watson
published an influential article. Watson argued that psychology should abandon its earlier focus on
mind and mental processes and focus exclusively on overt behavior. He contended that psychology
could not study mental processes in a scientific manner because they are private and not accessible to
outside observation. In completely rejecting mental processes as a suitable subject for scientific study,
Watson took an extreme position that is no longer dominant among modern behaviorists. Thus, most
behaviorists view an individual s personality as a collection of response tendencies that are tied to
various stimulus situations. A specific situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, I clowned around in class and gained appreciative comments and smiles from
schoolmates. This social approval reinforced my clowning around behavior. If such behavior would
have been reinforced with some regularity, it would have gradually become an integral element of my
personality. Similarly, whether or not I developed traits such as independence, assertiveness, or
selfishness depended on whether I got reinforced for such behavior by parents or by other influential
persons. Negative reinforcement occurs when a response is strengthened (increased in frequency)
because it is followed by the removal of a (presumably) unpleasant stimulus (Skinner, p.67). Do not
let the word negative here confuse you. Negative reinforcement is reinforcement. Like positive
reinforcement, it strengthens a response. However, this strengthening occurs because the response gets
rid of an aversive stimulus. Consider a few examples: I rush home in winter to get out of the cold. I
clean my house to get rid of a mess. Parents gave in to my begging to halt my whining. Negative
reinforcement plays a major role in the development of avoidance tendencies. As you have may
notices, many people tend to avoid facing up to awkward situations and sticky personal problems.
This personality trait typically develops because avoidance behavior gets rid of anxiety and is
therefore negatively

The Ongoing Energy Debate
The Ongoing Energy Debate As we all know, the energy debate has been ongoing for decades. There
is a laundry list of opinions concerning energy use and production. When it comes to oil we are all too
aware of the price and demand for what has proven to be the most valued resource on the planet.
Advocates of alternate energies insist that the end of oil is nearer than most of us may think, while
proponents of petroleum assure us that due to technological advancements there are still large
untapped reserves which promise to see us through the next century despite our increasing demand for
this black gold.
One proponent of alternate energies, James Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency outlines the need
for an alternative fuel source, but also explains the pit falls of alternate energy sources. The reason oil
is such a valued and highly used commodity is because of its efficiency and wide range of uses
compared to other energy sources. The truth is that no matter what proponents of alternate energies
say, there is no good substitute at this time for oil which is largely the reason we re still using it.
Kunstler explains the pitfalls of hydrogen energy, coal and solar. The hydrogen used in fuel cells is
largely derived from natural gas resources, coal is less versatile and solar energy is expensive to
produce. Considering the cost of oil at the consumer level it seems common sense that if there was a
cheaper, comparably efficient substitute we would be jumping at the

Eleanor Of Aquitaine Analysis
Before one can get into the great, yet surprisingly simple, debate over whether or not the capital
figural statue heads, on the right side of the apse, in the interior at Notre Dame Du Bourg at Langon
are in fact the sculptural depictions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England; firstly one must
have a general understanding of not only Eleanor s life but of the tradition of Romanesque sculpture.
Starting, a brief synopsis of the life of the great Eleanor of Aquitaine: she was born during the 12th
century in 1122 and lived until she was eighty two. Eleanor was the proud daughter of a distinguished
dynasty, and she never forgot her lineage: successors to Carolingians which equalled the Capetians

The capital in question, is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the Cloisters.
According to files at the Cloisters, it is impossible to date exactly when this capital and the seven
others at Langon where created, but they are estimated to have been sculpted between 1155 and 1183.
The files at the Cloisters also claim, that there is no direct connection can be established between
Eleanor and Henry, and the priory of Langon. However in contrary during their nuptial progress, they
visited the Church of Notre Dame du Bourg at Langon. As the Church at Langon was well underway
but still undergoing construction, thus making the capital dedication possible, even if Eleanor and
Henry were not there at the time of the creation of the sculpture, due to the establishment of travelling
ateliers masons the likeness of the most powerful people would have generally been known. The rise
of figural sculpture in the Romanesque period occurred simultaneously with the rise of the artist. The
early 12th century in Europe, brought about the revival of figural stone sculpture to a high level of
stylistic subtlety and iconographic complexity. This expressionist style was combined with theological
motifs, nature, and the functionality of images that came to represent a certain truth as reality. It was in
this context, that the artist, following the patrons

Implementing The Myfloridamarketplace ( Mfmp ) Program,...
Prior to implementing the MyFloridaMarketPlace (MFMP) program, the State of Florida did not have
an enterprise wide electronic procurement to payment system. The deployment of MFMP enabled a
centralized source for procurement activates, automating the state s requisition, purchase order,
invoicing, and payment approval process, making the procurement cycle more cost effective and time
efficient than the formally utilized paper based system. With a state as large and diverse as Florida, the
MFMP team recognized the unique needs of each agency and developed the ability for agencies to
customize approval flows while adhering to statewide standards. The key differentiators of the MFMP
program are the flexibility provided via customizable agency approval flows, a centrally managed
update process, and a streamlined system change request process.
Customized Approval Flows
All 32 State of Florida agencies have standard approval flows that they may customize as needed.
(MFMP interagency standard requisition approval flows are discussed in Appendix A). State of
Florida agencies have the ability to create and customize their approval flows for either the entire
agency or delineate by department or location through the creation of Purchase Unit Identifiers (PUI).
PUIs enable agencies to easily establish budgets, track spend, and search for orders. Purchasing Unit
Identifiers are added and updated in MFMP through a standardized monthly process managed by the
MFMP Customer Support Desk.

Starting in 468 BCE during the Zhou dynasty, the Grand Canal took about 6 million peasants about a
millennium to build. The construction of this canal finally finished in 610 CE under Emperor Yangdi
of the Sui dynasty. Changing China s staple from millet and wheat to rice was the main reason of the
building of the canal, but it also helped Chinese economy by connecting the more productive southern
China to the capitals in northern china. It increased interdependence between the north and the south.
One section of the Grand Canal was also intended to supply Chinese armies which led to better
defense and administration in China. Also, in building the canal, officials were required to work
together, so the Grand Canal brought better authority and unity to political officials. The downside of
this canal, though, was the number of peasants killed in constructing it. Over half of the 6 million

Mary Shelley s Frankenstein As A Gothic Novel
Mary shelley uses Spooky castles, mystery, and suspense: these are all elements of a Gothic novel.
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein was written in the early 19th century, the novel certainly contains many
components of a Gothic novel. Shelley uses various literary devices to support the element of a
supernatural event, dreams, emotions, and metonymy of gloom, which classify Frankenstein as a
Gothic novel. Immediately after Frankenstein s supernatural creation, Victor s horrifying dream
foreshadows Elizabeth s death to come in Chapter Twenty Three. The ominous dream, a common
component of Gothic novels, serves as a presage of the monster s savage homicide of Victor s true
love. Victor dreams that he saw Elizabeth, in the bloom of health, walking... I embraced her, but as I
imprinted the first kiss on her lips, they begin livid with the hue of death (35). This portentous dream
that eventually becomes reality is a consequence of Victor s desertion and society s rejection of his
creation.
Gothic literature can be defined as a literature that uses, as its main driving force, a combination of the
supernatural, the grotesque, and the absurd in order to convey its point to the reader. Furthermore, the
elements of the gothic work are not some random congregation of obscenities and meaningless
calamity. The elements are cleverly calculated, and calamity never occurs simply for the sake of
calamity.Gothic literatures have that certain something that

If I could travel back in time to the days of the Roman empire, I would try and prevent Constantine
from moving the capital to a new location, Constantinople. And instead suggest that he either keeps it
in place, or builds the capital but keeps Rome as it capital as well. The movement of the capital greatly
benefited the eastern side of the Roman empire, but with the growing power of the east, the west
continued to crumble. And as the west falls, the east will soon follow. Ths will result in the total fall of
the Roman empire. For the east, and as far as Constantine could see, moving the capital from the far
western side (almost in the east), to the east it seemed perfect because the location was centered
perfectly for trade, and less

Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest
The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over
the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the most
easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in the
novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the perceived and
implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward which limits the
characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned by the antagonist
Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Beneath all is a subtext of sexual repression which is
constantly fought against by McMurphy. Individually, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always portrayed by
McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the most free, sexually,
of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he only seems to be able to act
on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon and he is eventually punished for it
by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men are all repressed mostly due to some
problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact, it is their inability to deal with women that
brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women are portrayed throughout the book as the root of
all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not
acknowledge her femininity but hides it successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed
uniform. She is cold toward the men offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men
s issues with women in general. Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when
McMurphy rips open her uniform revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman
after all.
Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise
control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. In the story, the restriction of all freedoms is

Argumentative Essay On Pearl Harbor
December 7th, 1941, was the day 2,403 Americans lost their lives and 1,200 wounded during the
Japanese air raid, on Pearl Harbor. On this day, the US Navy lost almost the entire Pacific Fleet in the
harbor. After the attack, all the ships were either sunk or severally damaged minus the aircraft carriers.
The aircraft carriers luckily were still at sea. The total number of military personnel killed was 2,335,
including 2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army. Added to this were 68 civilians, making
the total 2403 people dead. 1,177 men alone were from the USS Arizona.
The attack on Pearl Harbor is something that is taught in grade school history. However, if it is being
taught correctly that s a different story. As a child, we believe everything that the teacher taught us
even if it was a lie. The story of Pearl Harbor is a horrific event that has been revealing more
information throughout the years. What was taught in school was Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack
by the Japanese. That the Japanese managed to fly into US Airspace and destroy our ships and planes
for no reason. As we research more about this particular topic, we discover that the United States was
doing a really good job keeping secrets. For example, the Japanese has a reason to attack the US.
The United States along with our allies Britain and Dutch, provoked the Japanese to attack. In 1937
Japan declared war on China which aggravated the US. The US and its Allies formed a plan and cut
off the oil supply for the Japanese military. No oil, meant no fuel for the war. By the US making the
strategic plan to cut of the oil supply, left the Japanese finding oil elsewhere. So, they planned to
invade into the Philippines and the Malaya territories. By moving into these locations with the hopes
of finding a steady source of natural resources such as oil and rubber. In order to do so, the Japanese
empire had to cripple the US military base that was 5,276 miles way. After months of planning, the
Japanese Empire put their attack in motion. After many different red flag scenarios, the Japanese
Bombers still managed to get the upper hand on us. With all of the red flags that s presented hours,
days, weeks before the attack why was the Pacific not

Homemade Education By Malcolm X Analysis
Trying to communicate, but words aren t used, writing isn t used, it s simply impossible. When
communicating with others we use words, we speak, write, and read. But if one can t perform those
tasks, communication is simply out of reach. The essay Homemade Education by Malcolm X, a
minister and a civil right activist, describes how his experience of learning how to read and write in
prison changes his life as he became both an articulate speaker and writer. Similarly, Helen Keller, an
author and political activist shares her experience being both deaf and blind in an excerpt called A
Word for Everything. She explains how learning a new language opened her to all the joys and horrors
of the world. I, like many other authors, also had an experience concerning language and how it
changed my perspective of the world. Speaking Chinese and Vietnamese as my first languages in the
United States made me run into societal barriers and restrictions. However, by learning English, I
could open myself to new possibilities and experiences. By learning and struggling through the
experience of language; new perspectives are opened up such as how one views themselves, the
world, and society. There is a motive each person has that causes them to want to learn, experience,
and struggle with language. Malcolm X lacked writing skills and claimed that when he tried to write
in simple English, [he] not only wasn t articulate, [he] wasn t even functional (143). Malcolm X

Bunker Mexico
What is also intriguing about Bunker s study of Mexico is that the changes that were being accepted
by the Mexican population were very often complete contradictions to what was considered
traditionally Mexican. Not only does this stand in complete opposition to what was seen in Karush s
Argentina, but in Mexico the constant reworking of consumer goods and the texts used to sell them...
generated the cultural meaning that provided an identity for both the self and the world around them.
(Bunker 97) Once again, Mexico and Argentina could not be any different when seen through the lens
of Consumer Culture and Culture of Class. The strict devotion of the government in Argentina to keep
hold of traditional ways of life were mirrored in Mexico by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Each author in his or her own way masterfully employs images in order to better support their overall
claims. Within her text, Workers Go Shopping, Milanesio expertly employs multiple photos of
Argentinians moving about their daily lives to illustrate how the importation of western culture so
greatly affected the emerging middle, and working class consumers. This gives great backing to her
thesis of how the emerging working class so greatly affected the transformation of Argentina into a
modern 20th century nation. Photos of the Argentinian people enjoying modern luxuries like dance
halls and vacations to the beach, are accompanied by advertisements from magazines and street
billboards which further illuminate the consumer culture which had engulfed the nation by mid
century. Milanesio also employs images to illustrate how the importation of western culture also
propagated gender roles for not only women, but men as well. Documents taken directly from
Argentinian media of the day can be seen encouraging women to aspire for beauty, but also
submissiveness. The propagation of the housewife myth, visible here in the Argentinian media, was a
very prevalent force in the society of the United States at this time and can be assumed to have been
heavily influenced by their neighbors to the north. Ads directed to women for sewing machines and
kitchen appliances were mirrored by ones pointed to men which embedded ideals of masculinity and
hard work. These advertisements not only encouraged an overall image of what Argentinian people
should aspire to, but also expanded the consumer market, thereby promoting consumerism. These
photographs of Argentinians enjoying the newfound luxuries of modernity and consumer society gives
great backing to Milanesio s thesis of how the

Social And Justice Issues Involving The Jewish Community
Shir Tikvah is a kehillah kedosha (holy community) joyfully revealing the intersections of Talmud
torah (lifelong Torah study), t filah (prayer), tzedakah (justice), and hachnasat orchim (radical
hospitality) . Shir Tikvah meaning Song of Hope is a Reform Jewish Temple located on Minnehaha
Parkway in Minneapolis. The congregation was established in 1988 when Stacy Offner, first woman
Rabbi in MN, resigned from Mount Zion Temple after a disagreement over her homosexuality. Her
and a six supporters joined together as they shared a mutual vision of starting a synagogue with more
of a liberal approach to Judaism. They desired to have a synagogue that was welcoming and personal:

In 2008, Rabbi Offner left to move to New York and Shir Tikvah hired their present Rabbi, Michael
Adam Latz. Today more than 450 households attend Shir Tikvah to worship, learn, and to participate
in activities that support their religion and the wellbeing of one another.
My finance and I attended a Friday night Shabbat service. Shabbat is the Jewish Sabbath day; their
day of rest. It begins on Friday and concludes Saturday evening. Shabbat allows time for members to
focus on what it is important and that is: worshiping, reflecting on the week, and growing together.
Depending on the day (Friday or Saturday) and week (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th), the service may vary
including the content of worship, it s timing and style. The Shabbat service we attend took place on
the second Friday of the month; it involved music, prayer and a sermon. As we entered Shir Takvih,
we felt very welcomed; everyone was polite and answered any questions we had. After we received a
copy of their translated prayer book (machzorim) we were directed to the designated place, where we
were told that we could sit anywhere we like. The white painted room which was surrounded by big
round windows had several roles of wooden fold up chairs. Not wanting to be a disturbance we sat in
the back row. At the front of the room there was a bimah with an assortment of musical instruments on
one side and a podium

Goldilocks Affirmative Defense
Goldilocks has admitted to having committed the act of murder and burglary, however, she asserts
affirmative defenses that would exonerate her actions from criminal liability. Affirmative dense brings
to light danger for the defense because once admitting the act the defendants have the burden to, start
matters off by putting in some evidence in support of their justification or excuse defenses (Samaha,
2011). In addition, the burden of production will shift to the defense and it is now the prosecution s
job to cause doubt upon the defense s case. In Goldilocks case of a justification defense this would
involve her use of self defense and its necessity being that under the circumstances, it was the right
thing to do (Samaha, 2011). Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For an attack to be considered self defense it must apply to four requirements. The first is unprovoked
attacks in which the defender has to have not started or provoked the attack. In Goldilocks case this is
held because she was attempting to leave when Prince Charming saw and forcibly locked her inside.
The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the choice of evils, reflects popular
moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the rules is the right indeed, the only thing
to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012). In Goldilocks case this choice of evils was a
fact in both acts the burglary where she was given a choice to either starve to death or break into a
home so she can eat. The other instance was the Prince Charming reaching for his walking stick that
he uses to constantly physically abuse her and the choice to defend herself. The third element of self
defense is proportionality which is the ability of a defender to use deadly force if no deadly force is
not enough to repel the oncoming attack with no excessive force (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case
Prince Charming is not only bigger and stronger than her she was in no state where she could run
away or hide she had no choice. The last requirement is reasonable belief which is the belief that it
was necessary to use deadly force to repel the imminent deadly attack (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks
case she was in a position where she was going to have to fight for her life and the only way should
would have made it out alive was by using the

  • 2. Comparing Kent State And The Living Room War The Shooting of Kent State and The Living Room War The shooting of Kent State University on May 4, 1970 marked a point in the war that divided the nation and brought attention to the war on a scale never seen before. Fighting on the battleground was brought to America s soil through the power of television and as the battle continued, emotions on the homefront intensified. The executive decision of President Richard Nixon initiated the protests and swung the opinion of the use of military force in Vietnam by his April 30 announcement that he had sent American forces into Cambodia (Reichard). President Nixon s decision of sending forces into Cambodia sparked the protests on many campuses, one of them being Kent State, leading to the shooting and killing of four students, however only two of the students shot and killed were involved in the protests. The killing... was another important turning point for many GI and veteran activists (Moser 108). The Living Room war also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time period, the use of television boomed, and for the first time was depended on and trusted significantly more than newspapers. [Even though] the coverage of the war was significant, a relatively small portion of the coverage was actually combat footage (Anderson). Although producers captured thousands of hours worth of combat footage, they could not push out all of the coverage they captured, The purpose being not to avoid showing the ugly side of war, but rather to avoid offending families of war victims (Hallin). The media did not intentionally try to turn america against the war, to the contrary the media saw the war necessary to national security. However, as the war continued on in vietnam and watched daily in living rooms across the country, both the american soldiers and the public became disillusioned as they did not see an end to the war ... • 3. Physical And Social Context Of The Building Examine the physical and social context of the building The Glass House is a building in which personal qualities are a vital component of the construction framework. The house is focusing on the correlation between an individual and buildings. There are architectural rules including conventions that establish a guide and maintain traditional approaches to building structures. However, Phillip Johnson operates against these standards of design rules and highlights the modernistic period due to the buildings orientation and non traditional materials. The structure of the house is revealing the materials and aesthetic qualities. The house further highlights that Phillip Johnson works in a non social vacuum. However, he reflects several aspects of social structures. Having these aspects influences and demonstrates how, when, time and place the structure was built. Glass House remains located in a tropical environment away from street view, due to it being secluded and isolated. The primary materials applied consist of paints, glass, bricks and furniture. The physical context of the environment constantly shifts the efficiency and sustainability of the materials. Resulting in a constant change in colour and odour, mainly due to environmental factors such as change of temperature. The house being secluded from public display enables the house to be private and only exposed to the tropical environment. The interior of the glass house has a cylindrical brick structure that ... • 4. The Bible And The Word inspire Essay The Bible and the Word quot;Inspire quot; According to the Random House Dictionary, the word inspire means quot;to infuse an animating, quickening, or exalting influence into, or to communicate or suggest by a divine influence. quot; This definition indicates, when applied to the scripture, that the stories and writings in the Bible did not come solely from the minds of the respective authors, but rather from a divine source. This suggests that the authors were scribes, reproducing what was instilled in them by God. This idea is strengthened by looking at distinct examples from the scripture that show that scripture is inspired, and not made up. By using the form of criticism known as literary criticism, we can analyze certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... God can be viewed as an indirect author, and the inspiration for scripture. quot;We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and the comings of our Lord Jesus Christ but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. quot; quot;Above all you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. quot; From the standpoint of a literary critic, these two passages represent the question at hand as to whether or not scripture is inspired. Literary criticism looks at the passage as a whole, and reads what it says, just as a normal person would. Using this method, we see easily that scripture is in fact inspired, because it states that there were no cleverly invented stories, but rather God s own words. God s plans for his people are carefully laid out, and there is much doubt that He would entrust average people to teach others about His word without careful explanation as to exactly what it is, and how it came to be. This is why much of the Bible, especially the Pentateuch, tells the historical story of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Problems Faced By The And Corporate Culture 4.The problems of the mergers in technology industry During the integration process after merging, the clash of the human resources and the corporate culture will arise. Merger always takes risk on some extent, so some employees will feel unsafe about their job, which will cause the lost of the human resources. What s more, to optimize the new employee structure and reduce labor cost, amount of employees will face to be laid off. Such a large personnel change will cut down the investors trust, because the investor will suspect the stability of the new combined company. Even two similar technology companies still have different corporate culture which can represent the companies brand images and affect the customers loyalty. They may produce the similar products, but they may differ in the business ideas and background. Hence, how to integrate two companies corporate culture in order to exert the joint corporate value is difficult for the new combined company. If the new combined company abandoned one of the company s corporate culture, they will lose part of customers who already lose the faith to the company. How to integrate the two technology companies technology is important for the development of the new combined company in the future after merging. • 6. The Theme of Mental Health Illustrated in Woolf s Mrs.... Mrs. Dalloway , by Virginia Woolf is a derivative text of The Hours , written by Michael Cunningham. The novels both share an important theme of mental health. The circumstances of mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in Mrs. Dalloway and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolf in The Hours show the strongest symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and treatments these characters face are in direct result of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and treatments. The clearest illness was that of Septimus, in Mrs. Dalloway . Septimus suffered from shell shock, a result of the First World War. This illness in turn brought about an ... Bradshaw s awareness is especially revealing of the attitude of some doctors at the time: Health we must have; and health is proportion; so that when a man comes into your room and says he is Christ... ...and has a message... ...and threatens... ...to kill himself, you invoke proportion; order rest in bed; rest in solitude; silence and rest; rest without friends, without books; without messages; six months rest... (Page 110). Woolf s own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw s thoughts. Woolf portrays doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are shown through Woolf s characteristic stream of consciousness style. Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew are applied. Human nature is remorseless. (Page 108). Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus thoughts are portrayed. The thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless victim. When understanding the way Septimus is being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf s use of stream of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. In addition, I led a group of twenty students to the East Coast Asian American Student Union conference at Columbia University. Development of escitalopram, achieved by collaboration of Lundbeck and Forest Laboratories, began in the summer of 1997 and took only 3.5 years. The first patients participated in studies for marketing authorization in summer of 1999, and the first clinical results were published in December 2000. A year later, in December 2001, Lundbeck received Swedish approval for the treatment of depression and panic disorder. Researchers from Lundbeck tried to explain this phenomenon by proposing that escitalopram enhances its own binding by interacting with another allosteric site on the transporter. However, additional research showed that (R) citalopram also enhances the binding of escitalopram, so allosteric interaction cannot explain the observed counteracting effect. Of the SSRIs currently on the market, escitalopram has the highest affinity for the serotonin transporter, and thus has a relatively mild side effect profile. Some of the more commonly reported side effects are diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, ejaculatory disorder, nausea, insomnia, and delayed ejaculation. Armed forces have been used for the good of empires, but also for the bad. Many empires have risen to great power through their military but, the ones in this essay mastered the use of armed forces. Militaries have shaped empires, even in some cases being a way of live for that society. Even in the beginning of civilizations armies were beginning to pop up. The use of violence towards other tribes, and groups of people lead to the development of standing armies. This also led to the establishment of taxation to support food, equipment, and payment to the soldiers of ever increasing militaries. It is interesting to look into how militaristic cultures have come up and many cases dominated certain areas. It s fascinating to see why some empires military have been so successful and won many of battles. In this essay I will talk about three different empires and how they became successful over time. These three militaristic cultures are all respected in their own rights. First is the Assyrian Empire. Its military might started around 900b.c.e on the Tigris river were they would later start a conquest which they controlled most of the Middle East. Also I will look into Sparta, which the Spartans are considered some of the fiercest warriors to have lived. Their dominance reached its height around 600b.c.e. Cultural belief also affects the way people eat. For instance, among all the Indians, cutlery is not used to eat food. They think that food is meant to be a whole sensory experience, so an eating habit in the traditional Indian culture is to consume Indian foods such as curry, rice and naan bread by picking it up using the hands. Bread is often used to scoop up the curry sauce and rice, and it is dipped into traditional soups such as daal, a lentil based soup. Indian people are supposed to eat with their right hands, because eating with the left hand is thought to be unclean. While it is still common to find Singaporean Indians eating with hands, it is more likely they will do so in the comfort of their own homes or in restaurants where they can wash their hands before and afterward. Many Indians now do not eat with hands and use cutlery instead in public settings such as the food court or school canteens because they may find it inconvenient and unhygienic to eat with hands in these ... Dances With Wolves And Avatar Dances with Wolves and Avatar: Similar but Different Dances with Wolves and Avatar are thought to be very different, but they are actually more similar than viewers may realize. First off, these are two must see films! The viewer walks away with much more than just having seen a movie. Both of these movies encourage cultural understanding, motivate, and teach individuality. Dances with Wolves and Avatar are alike in plot and cultural significance. These two films are alike in plot because in both films, two men, John Dunbar and Jake Sully, willingly put themselves into a completely new culture and lifestyle. They learn to adapt to the differences and learn a new way of life in order to survive. For example, in the movies Dances with Wolves and Avatar, John Dunbar and Jake Sully had to learn each tribe s way of life, such as their language, hunting, and self defense. Eventually, the two men are recognized as part of a tribe, for John the Sioux Indian Tribe and for Jake the Na vi Tribe. These two films are alike in cultural significance because they both show the viewer not to believe all that is said about individuals, races, and cultures. In the two films, both tribes were first looked at as evil enemies, but once the two men each took the time to get to know the individuals and the tribes as a whole, they realized that it was all just a lie. • 23. The Effects Of Children After Parental Incarceration A Literature Review: The Effects on Children After Parental Incarceration Prisons have been around for centuries and in many countries the prison population has grown quickly. The prisoners health, behavior and well being have been focal points in many social concerns, however; incarceration goes beyond the prisoners experience. It touches employment after incarceration, social stigma, and families and communities that have been affected by incarceration, especially a child with incarcerated parents. That is what Joseph Murray, David P. Farrington, and Ivana Sekol focus on, the forgotten victims of crime (Matthews 1983). It is no surprise that children will experience many hardships emotionally and socially during their parental incarceration. This article aims to describe the associations between parental incarceration and children s antisocial behavior, mental health, drug use, and low educational performance prior to this event. The United States has the highest rate of imprisonment and has the largest prison population in all of the world. According to Glaze, about half of U.S. prisoners are parents of children under 18. Recent studies have noted that there are long term effects toward parental incarceration of children showing undesirable effects . In the story, the main character, Macbeth, kills King Duncan to become King. He is so blind with his evilness that he does not see that his reign of power will come to an end. The theme, good vs. evil, shows one just how quick another can have a change of heart through Macbeth s conflicts with himself, his wife, and the son of the King. To begin with, Macbeth has had internal good vs. evil issues. Macbeth contemplates about killing King Duncan when he says First, as I am his Kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself. • 29. Characteristics Of A Representative Democracy I. Introduction Though the modern academic may describe a political regime as a democracy , what they almost always imply is that said political regime is a representative democracy. A representative democracy obtains its legitimacy from the agency of the people; for a democracy to be representative, officials are elected to represent the interests of their citizens and are thus accountable to both the rules of political institutions and the needs of their constituents. The most basic facets to a representative democracy such as free and fair elections and strong competition between political parties are cornerstones to the structuring of a representative democracy, and yet there are cases within the past century in which representative democracies with elections and competitive political parties descend into authoritarian regimes. So though the election of representatives is paramount to modern democracies, there are other factors that constitute what Leonardo Morlino calls the qualities of democracy. Morlino subdivides the qualities of a democracy into rule of law, electoral accountability, institutional accountability, competition, participation, freedom and equality, and responsiveness. There is no denial that all seven of these criteria Morlino are essential to the establishment and maintenance of a representative democracy. However, I would like to argue that four of the most important aspects to assessing the quality of a democracy are independent branches of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Compare And Contrast Renaissance Music And Medieval Music The Medieval period began in 500 A.D. and ended in 1450 A.D. During this time in particular, the Catholic Church had significant influence on how music was used and created. Sacred music, for example, was most prevalent because of this. Due to the religious nature of this period, music in the church had to adhere to very specific regulations, some of which included prayers such as plainchants or Gregorian chants. A single melody without harmony, or one musical part sung together in unison, is called a Monophonic melody, which was sung primarily by monks. Some time later, around 900 A.D., the using of two melodic lines was permitted by the church, this music was called organum. A low, continuous note called a drone, was sung at the same time as the main melody. The two melodies were often moving in contrasting motion to each other. By the Late Medieval period, 1100 A.D., the music of the church had shifted from monophonic to more polyphonic, often two or more varying parts. The Renaissance period, from 1450 A.D. to 1600 A.D., comprised of two main types of music, sacred and secular. In comparison with the Medieval period, where music was usually reserved for church purposes, the Renaissance period allowed music to expand beyond the church into upper aristocratic society. Sacred music included motets and mass, while secular included madrigals, instrumental and dance music. • 33. Skinner vs. Bandura Behaviorism has been a major school of thought in psychology since 1913, when John B. Watson published an influential article. Watson argued that psychology should abandon its earlier focus on mind and mental processes and focus exclusively on overt behavior. He contended that psychology could not study mental processes in a scientific manner because they are private and not accessible to outside observation. In completely rejecting mental processes as a suitable subject for scientific study, Watson took an extreme position that is no longer dominant among modern behaviorists. Thus, most behaviorists view an individual s personality as a collection of response tendencies that are tied to various stimulus situations. A specific situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, I clowned around in class and gained appreciative comments and smiles from schoolmates. This social approval reinforced my clowning around behavior. If such behavior would have been reinforced with some regularity, it would have gradually become an integral element of my personality. Similarly, whether or not I developed traits such as independence, assertiveness, or selfishness depended on whether I got reinforced for such behavior by parents or by other influential persons. Negative reinforcement occurs when a response is strengthened (increased in frequency) because it is followed by the removal of a (presumably) unpleasant stimulus (Skinner, p.67). Do not let the word negative here confuse you. Negative reinforcement is reinforcement. Like positive reinforcement, it strengthens a response. However, this strengthening occurs because the response gets rid of an aversive stimulus. Consider a few examples: I rush home in winter to get out of the cold. I clean my house to get rid of a mess. Parents gave in to my begging to halt my whining. Negative reinforcement plays a major role in the development of avoidance tendencies. When it comes to oil we are all too aware of the price and demand for what has proven to be the most valued resource on the planet. Advocates of alternate energies insist that the end of oil is nearer than most of us may think, while proponents of petroleum assure us that due to technological advancements there are still large untapped reserves which promise to see us through the next century despite our increasing demand for this black gold. One proponent of alternate energies, James Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency outlines the need for an alternative fuel source, but also explains the pit falls of alternate energy sources. The reason oil is such a valued and highly used commodity is because of its efficiency and wide range of uses compared to other energy sources. The truth is that no matter what proponents of alternate energies say, there is no good substitute at this time for oil which is largely the reason we re still using it. Kunstler explains the pitfalls of hydrogen energy, coal and solar. The hydrogen used in fuel cells is largely derived from natural gas resources, coal is less versatile and solar energy is expensive to produce. Considering the cost of oil at the consumer level it seems common sense that if there was a cheaper, comparably efficient substitute we would be jumping at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Starting, a brief synopsis of the life of the great Eleanor of Aquitaine: she was born during the 12th century in 1122 and lived until she was eighty two. Prior to implementing the MyFloridaMarketPlace (MFMP) program, the State of Florida did not have an enterprise wide electronic procurement to payment system. The deployment of MFMP enabled a centralized source for procurement activates, automating the state s requisition, purchase order, invoicing, and payment approval process, making the procurement cycle more cost effective and time efficient than the formally utilized paper based system. With a state as large and diverse as Florida, the MFMP team recognized the unique needs of each agency and developed the ability for agencies to customize approval flows while adhering to statewide standards. The key differentiators of the MFMP program are the flexibility provided via customizable agency approval flows, a centrally managed update process, and a streamlined system change request process. • 42. Spread of Buddhism in China Essay It is believed that Buddhism spread to China through the Silk Road. When the Silk Road opened in the 2nd century BC, missionaries and pilgrims spread Buddhism to China. Chang Ch ien was recorded to first bring Buddhism to China when he heard about India and Buddhist beliefs on his way back to China. In about the 1st century BC, a Buddhist community is said to have been living in China. But the most well known story of the spreading of Buddhism is when Han emperor, Mingdi, had a dream about Buddha in 68 CE and sent Cai Yin, his official to learn more about it. Meanwhile, Mingdi learned from his ministers that he had seen Buddha, the God of the West in his dream. After 3 years Cai Yin came back to china with Buddhist teachings and ... The construction of this canal finally finished in 610 CE under Emperor Yangdi of the Sui dynasty. Changing China s staple from millet and wheat to rice was the main reason of the building of the canal, but it also helped Chinese economy by connecting the more productive southern China to the capitals in northern china. It increased interdependence between the north and the south. One section of the Grand Canal was also intended to supply Chinese armies which led to better defense and administration in China. Also, in building the canal, officials were required to work together, so the Grand Canal brought better authority and unity to political officials. The downside of this canal, though, was the number of peasants killed in constructing it. Over half of the 6 million peasants employed to build the canal died in building it, which was a reason the Sui dynasty fell. The great Grand Canal set the foundation for the great Tang dynasty. Empress Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule China, ruled during the Tang dynasty, but exerted cruel and malicious methods to gain power. She was born with the name Wu Zhao into a wealthy family and learned to write, read, and play music. Because of her beauty and intelligence, Wu became Emperor Tsung s fifth favorite concubine, or ... • 43. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein As A Gothic Novel Mary shelley uses Spooky castles, mystery, and suspense: these are all elements of a Gothic novel. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein was written in the early 19th century, the novel certainly contains many components of a Gothic novel. Shelley uses various literary devices to support the element of a supernatural event, dreams, emotions, and metonymy of gloom, which classify Frankenstein as a Gothic novel. Immediately after Frankenstein s supernatural creation, Victor s horrifying dream foreshadows Elizabeth s death to come in Chapter Twenty Three. The ominous dream, a common component of Gothic novels, serves as a presage of the monster s savage homicide of Victor s true love. Victor dreams that he saw Elizabeth, in the bloom of health, walking... I embraced her, but as I imprinted the first kiss on her lips, they begin livid with the hue of death (35). This portentous dream that eventually becomes reality is a consequence of Victor s desertion and society s rejection of his creation. Gothic literature can be defined as a literature that uses, as its main driving force, a combination of the supernatural, the grotesque, and the absurd in order to convey its point to the reader. Furthermore, the elements of the gothic work are not some random congregation of obscenities and meaningless calamity. The elements are cleverly calculated, and calamity never occurs simply for the sake of calamity.Gothic literatures have that certain something that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Constantine And The Fall Of The Roman Empire If I could travel back in time to the days of the Roman empire, I would try and prevent Constantine from moving the capital to a new location, Constantinople. And instead suggest that he either keeps it in place, or builds the capital but keeps Rome as it capital as well. The movement of the capital greatly benefited the eastern side of the Roman empire, but with the growing power of the east, the west continued to crumble. And as the west falls, the east will soon follow. Ths will result in the total fall of the Roman empire. For the east, and as far as Constantine could see, moving the capital from the far western side (almost in the east), to the east it seemed perfect because the location was centered perfectly for trade, and less ... • 45. Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the most easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in the novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the perceived and implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward which limits the characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned by the antagonist Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Beneath all is a subtext of sexual repression which is constantly fought against by McMurphy. Individually, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always portrayed by McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the most free, sexually, of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he only seems to be able to act on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon and he is eventually punished for it by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men are all repressed mostly due to some problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact, it is their inability to deal with women that brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women are portrayed throughout the book as the root of all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not acknowledge her femininity but hides it successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed uniform. She is cold toward the men offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men s issues with women in general. Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when McMurphy rips open her uniform revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman after all. Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. In the story, the restriction of all freedoms is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Argumentative Essay On Pearl Harbor December 7th, 1941, was the day 2,403 Americans lost their lives and 1,200 wounded during the Japanese air raid, on Pearl Harbor. On this day, the US Navy lost almost the entire Pacific Fleet in the harbor. After the attack, all the ships were either sunk or severally damaged minus the aircraft carriers. The aircraft carriers luckily were still at sea. The total number of military personnel killed was 2,335, including 2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army. Added to this were 68 civilians, making the total 2403 people dead. 1,177 men alone were from the USS Arizona. The attack on Pearl Harbor is something that is taught in grade school history. However, if it is being taught correctly that s a different story. As a child, we believe everything that the teacher taught us even if it was a lie. The story of Pearl Harbor is a horrific event that has been revealing more information throughout the years. What was taught in school was Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack by the Japanese. That the Japanese managed to fly into US Airspace and destroy our ships and planes for no reason. As we research more about this particular topic, we discover that the United States was doing a really good job keeping secrets. For example, the Japanese has a reason to attack the US. The United States along with our allies Britain and Dutch, provoked the Japanese to attack. In 1937 Japan declared war on China which aggravated the US. The US and its Allies formed a plan and cut off the oil supply for the Japanese military. No oil, meant no fuel for the war. By the US making the strategic plan to cut of the oil supply, left the Japanese finding oil elsewhere. So, they planned to invade into the Philippines and the Malaya territories. By moving into these locations with the hopes of finding a steady source of natural resources such as oil and rubber. In order to do so, the Japanese empire had to cripple the US military base that was 5,276 miles way. After months of planning, the Japanese Empire put their attack in motion. After many different red flag scenarios, the Japanese Bombers still managed to get the upper hand on us. • 47. Homemade Education By Malcolm X Analysis Trying to communicate, but words aren t used, writing isn t used, it s simply impossible. When communicating with others we use words, we speak, write, and read. But if one can t perform those tasks, communication is simply out of reach. The essay Homemade Education by Malcolm X, a minister and a civil right activist, describes how his experience of learning how to read and write in prison changes his life as he became both an articulate speaker and writer. Similarly, Helen Keller, an author and political activist shares her experience being both deaf and blind in an excerpt called A Word for Everything. She explains how learning a new language opened her to all the joys and horrors of the world. I, like many other authors, also had an experience concerning language and how it changed my perspective of the world. Speaking Chinese and Vietnamese as my first languages in the United States made me run into societal barriers and restrictions. However, by learning English, I could open myself to new possibilities and experiences. By learning and struggling through the experience of language; new perspectives are opened up such as how one views themselves, the world, and society. There is a motive each person has that causes them to want to learn, experience, and struggle with language. Malcolm X lacked writing skills and claimed that when he tried to write in simple English, [he] not only wasn t articulate, [he] wasn t even functional (143). Malcolm X learned and ... • 48. Bunker Mexico What is also intriguing about Bunker s study of Mexico is that the changes that were being accepted by the Mexican population were very often complete contradictions to what was considered traditionally Mexican. Not only does this stand in complete opposition to what was seen in Karush s Argentina, but in Mexico the constant reworking of consumer goods and the texts used to sell them... generated the cultural meaning that provided an identity for both the self and the world around them. (Bunker 97) Once again, Mexico and Argentina could not be any different when seen through the lens of Consumer Culture and Culture of Class. Each author in his or her own way masterfully employs images in order to better support their overall claims. Within her text, Workers Go Shopping, Milanesio expertly employs multiple photos of Argentinians moving about their daily lives to illustrate how the importation of western culture so greatly affected the emerging middle, and working class consumers. This gives great backing to her thesis of how the emerging working class so greatly affected the transformation of Argentina into a modern 20th century nation. Photos of the Argentinian people enjoying modern luxuries like dance halls and vacations to the beach, are accompanied by advertisements from magazines and street billboards which further illuminate the consumer culture which had engulfed the nation by mid century. Milanesio also employs images to illustrate how the importation of western culture also propagated gender roles for not only women, but men as well. Documents taken directly from Argentinian media of the day can be seen encouraging women to aspire for beauty, but also submissiveness. The propagation of the housewife myth, visible here in the Argentinian media, was a very prevalent force in the society of the United States at this time and can be assumed to have been heavily influenced by their neighbors to the north. Ads directed to women for sewing machines and kitchen appliances were mirrored by ones pointed to men which embedded ideals of masculinity and hard work. These advertisements not only encouraged an overall image of what Argentinian people should aspire to, but also expanded the consumer market, thereby promoting consumerism. These photographs of Argentinians enjoying the newfound luxuries of modernity and consumer society gives great backing to Milanesio s thesis of how the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My finance and I attended a Friday night Shabbat service. Shabbat is the Jewish Sabbath day; their day of rest. It begins on Friday and concludes Saturday evening. Shabbat allows time for members to focus on what it is important and that is: worshiping, reflecting on the week, and growing together. Depending on the day (Friday or Saturday) and week (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th), the service may vary including the content of worship, it s timing and style. The Shabbat service we attend took place on the second Friday of the month; it involved music, prayer and a sermon. As we entered Shir Takvih, we felt very welcomed; everyone was polite and answered any questions we had. After we received a copy of their translated prayer book (machzorim) we were directed to the designated place, where we were told that we could sit anywhere we like. The white painted room which was surrounded by big round windows had several roles of wooden fold up chairs. Not wanting to be a disturbance we sat in the back row. • 50. Goldilocks Affirmative Defense Goldilocks has admitted to having committed the act of murder and burglary, however, she asserts affirmative defenses that would exonerate her actions from criminal liability. Affirmative dense brings to light danger for the defense because once admitting the act the defendants have the burden to, start matters off by putting in some evidence in support of their justification or excuse defenses (Samaha, 2011). In addition, the burden of production will shift to the defense and it is now the prosecution s job to cause doubt upon the defense s case. In Goldilocks case of a justification defense this would involve her use of self defense and its necessity being that under the circumstances, it was the right thing to do (Samaha, 2011). Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For an attack to be considered self defense it must apply to four requirements. The first is unprovoked attacks in which the defender has to have not started or provoked the attack. In Goldilocks case this is held because she was attempting to leave when Prince Charming saw and forcibly locked her inside. The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the choice of evils, reflects popular moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the rules is the right indeed, the only thing to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012). In Goldilocks case this choice of evils was a fact in both acts the burglary where she was given a choice to either starve to death or break into a home so she can eat. The other instance was the Prince Charming reaching for his walking stick that he uses to constantly physically abuse her and the choice to defend herself. The third element of self defense is proportionality which is the ability of a defender to use deadly force if no deadly force is not enough to repel the oncoming attack with no excessive force (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case Prince Charming is not only bigger and stronger than her she was in no state where she could run away or hide she had no choice. The last requirement is reasonable belief which is the belief that it was necessary to use deadly force to repel the imminent deadly attack (Samaha, 2011).
