The Second Punic War Essay
he Second Punic War (218 201 B.C.) was born out the growing rivalry between the empires of Rome
and Carthage (Morey, 1901, p. 64). When the Carthaginian territory in Spain began to extend
northward, Rome became concerned that an attack was imminent. This concern prompted Rome to
seek a treaty with Carthage establishing a border along the Iberus river in norther Spain. Carthage
respected the treaty until the death of Hasdrubal. Afterward the son of Hamilcar Barca, named
Hannibal immediately broke the treaty by capturing the city of Saguntum. A Roman envoy was sent to
Carthage to demand the surrender of Hannibal. Carthage refused and the Second Punic War began
(Morey, 1901, p. 64).
Over the next seventeen years Rome fought off the invasion of Hannibal s army in Italy. Hannibal had
gained many allies in the Italian peninsula including the Apulians, the Samnites, the ... Show more

Carthage would withdraw from Spain entirely, as well as the islands between Italy and Africa. These
islands included Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia. Masinissa, was recognized as the king of Numidia.
Masinissa had assisted Scipio when the Roman forces landed in Africa. His title had been disputed by
a Carthaginian ally named Syphax (Morey, 1901, p.70). The restoration of his royal title was
repayment for his allegiance to Rome. Carthage was not absorbed into the empire, nor reduced to a
province, rather it was considered a dependent state and was required to pay a tribute of 200 talents for
fifty years. Lastly, Carthage would require permission from Rome in order to wage war (Morey, 1901,
p. 71).
In addition to the peace agreement there were other outcomes of the Second Punic War. Syracuse was
added to the province of Sicily and the Spanish territory was divided into two new provinces, Hither
and Farther. Finally, the conflict had opened the door to hostility with Philip V of Macedonia (Morey,

Hebrew Bible Identity
The origin of the Hebrew Bible is unknown, but scholars believe the earliest collections of writings
first five books date back to nearly 3,500 years ago. The Pentateuch consist of these first five books.
The Old Testament, which it is also known as, influenced its time period and still continues to do so
today. The exile of the Judean people led their scholars to preserve their cultural identity through the
Hebrew Bible s usage of chiasm, repetition, and kinesthetic imagery. Each literary device was
designed so the audience could memorize the details and elite could easily pass down the stories
orally. In a society where only the professional elite read and wrote, The Bible was written down in a
series of years by a serious of these elites. It is believed to be written after the Babylonian Captivity.
The Judean people were first exiled to Babylon, and forced to assimilate into a society with a whole
other creation myth. The people of Judah were uprooted from their homes and forced to a new land,
Babylon. However, the exile ended at approximately 538 BCE when Cyrus The Great conquered
Persia and released the Jews back to Palestine. Upon return, scholars believe the first words of The
Bible were written. The first words were written because in times of grief and despair, religious
growth follows. So, when the Jews from Babylon returned home, a sense of spiritual renewal occurred
which forced the hands of scribes to document their faith, (Barton 369).

A amp;P Essay
It is very common for teenagers to wish to gain some freedom by earning a small income. This is
often achieved through employment at fast food chains, markets, restaurants, and shops. As a result of
the amount of time consumed by these occupations, much of a teenager s life tends to focus on the
people and events that are central to these places of employment. Sammy, the main character in John
Updike s story A amp;P, is a superb representation of the teen employee. p
Updike places his character in a typical setting and allows the readers to view the events of the story
from the perspective of a teen. By doing this, he makes it simple for readers to relate with Sammy and
his experiences. In reflection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After working for approximately three years in a bicycle shop where this characteristic can be easily
observed, I have found that customers will continue on their decided path of examining merchandise
and comparing prices, without regard for any added stimuli. During the busier seasons, it seems
especially true that one could, as stated by Sammy, set off dynamite . . . and the people would by and
large keep reaching and checking (Updike 371). This characteristic alienates the employee from
customers: in most cases, they are held to the belief that finding the lowest priced, lowest quality item
is necessary; they expect the employee to understandingly ring up six pairs of checkered spandex
cycling shorts that have been laying harmlessly dormant in the bargain bin since the 1980 s. Sammy
identifies this idea also by stating, what do these bums do with all that pineapple juice? (Updike 371).
p
The effort some customers place into catching an employee s mistake could easily establish customers
as the most abhorrent aspect of a teen s job experience in its self. The number of customers that
possess this fine quality seems to be related to a function that increases with respect to age; it appears

Jonbenet Ramsey Murder
Computed over a seventy five year life span, this equates to a one in two hundred chance of being
murdered at some point in an Americans life span (Ghiglieri, 1999). Boulder, Colorado is more
dangerous murders than the six cities around it (city data.com, 2017) When considering the motives,
the lack of presence, and crime scene it is clear Burke Ramsey, Patsy Ramsey, and John Ramsey
committed and covered up the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. Burke had plenty of motives that led to
killing his sister JonBenet Ramsey. In fact, Burke made it clear that he was jealous of his sister getting
all the attention from their parents. Their dad was always busy with work and their mom was always
busy with JonBenet s career (The Forensic outreach, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Patsy and John would do anything for their son even if he committed a crime they would
still help him get away with it. While testing samples of the Ramsey s handwriting John and Burke
were ruled out for writing the ransom note but, Patsy was never ruled out, professionals found about
two hundred similarities between the note and her handwriting, she also changed her handwriting
several times (A E television networks, 2016). Someone would not need to change their handwriting
so many times unless they had something to hide. However, maybe the reason the crime was never
solved was because Patsy had more information. Patsy died of ovarian cancer on June twenty forth,
two thousand six ; in the middle of the investigation (A E television network, 2016). They did not
question her enough before she died maybe she had the answers or more information. To add, Patsy
knew there was more information needed to be gathered in the house. Patsy agreed to not let
investigators proceed to gather DNA and information in the house after a few days of investigating
(Ryan Gajauski, 2016). Would she not want all the information needed to find out who killed her
daughter? For example, if someone just found out their child died they would not know where the
child s body was right away. John Ramsey suspiciously knew exactly where JonBenet s body was

Around the Horn Pow Essay
POW 9: Around the Horn Problem Statement During the time of crossing the overland trail, many
people instead chose to take the ship route which went around Cape Horn at the tip of South America.
The points that we are given to keep in mind are: A ship leaves New York for San Francisco on the

exactly six months after it leaves. With these things, we are also going to assume that: The weather

Assuming these things, and having the given knowledge, we are to answer the question, if you were
on a ship leaving from New York, how many ships from San Francisco would you see in passing?
Process At first, I was confused with this problem and did not know what to do. For this problem, I
used only one problem and it was what helped me solve it. With my table group (Derick I), we did a
simulation. We first drew out a large map with the points that every ship should reach at the start of
every month. Then we kept feeding in the blocks (which we used to act as ships) and did the
simulation. Using this strategy, we were able to find the solution. Solution I found that if I were a
traveler on a New York ship bound for San Francisco, I would see SEVEN ships from San Francisco,
California along the way. This is how I

In the 1954 film On The Waterfront, Terry Malloy, the protagonist, wants to become a prizefighter.

while also running errands at the docks for Johnny Friendly. Johnny Friendly began his childhood
fighting in the streets and became involved in an organization that helped him maintain self

Pros And Cons Of Owning Exotic Pets
How many people think it is okay to have an exotic animal as a pet? People do not care about the
responsibilities that come with owning an exotic pet when they get a wild animal. There are many
positives and negatives regarding owning exotic pets, but the negatives outweigh the positives greatly.
Keeping these animals in captivity is not only harmful to others but harmful to the animal. When
treated as pets these animals grow into adults and act aggressively to others around them, spread
diseases, and enclosures cost a great amount and have to be created by professionals the majority of
the time. Many people mistake domesticated animals with exotic animals and are okay with owning
exotic pets. These wild animals are easy to deal with when they are small, but when they turn into
adults they are more aggressive and harder to care for. Not all animals are trying to harm others, they
are born to be in the wild and trained to fend for themselves (Lewis). Statistics show that more people
die in car accidents every year than being killed by exotic animals, causing some to believe that it is
okay to own exotic pets ( REXANO Proves That Politicians... ). This thought contradicts itself when
the statistics of the amount of people being killed by animals were added. People think it is different
and exciting to be able to go to a neighbor s house and see exotic pets, but in reality it is causing
deaths. Owners are not aware of the precautions that need to have taken place to keep

Feminist Representation Of Mythology In Wonder Woman s...
The recent Wonder Woman cinematic remake has made major waves as a prime example of the
increasing feminist influence on modern society. Despite the story s comic book origin, it contains
many references and elements of ancient Greek myth. Mythology and other forms of storytelling have
remained a constant reflection of societal values of that period, and remain so to this day. In the
movie, Diana is a representation of ancient myth and the slow shift in societal preconceptions towards
the ideology of the modern day.
In the 2017 film Wonder Woman, the protagonist Diana can trace her origins back to the original
comics in the 70 s. However, many of the people closest to her in the film can be found in ancient
Greek myth, with slightly altered stories. In this modern myth, Diana s mother is Hippolyta, queen of
the Amazons. The Amazons as a whole are repeatedly mentioned in ancient myth as fierce female
warriors with Hippolyta as their fearless leader. Famously Hippolyta was given a girdle by her father
Ares, which Heracles was sent to retrieve as one of his impossible tasks, thus marking one of the first
myths where the Greeks and Amazons interacted. This differs greatly from the film where Ares is the
enemy rather than the father of the Amazons, reflecting a less barbaric and perhaps even positive
outlook on the origins of the Amazons in the film. In this modern take Ares is shown as evil
personified and positioning the Amazonians against him shows them as heroes rather than

Real Women Have Curves Analysis
Ana Garcia, the protagonist of the film Real Women Have Curves, is a perfect example of the
contemporary Latina in the United States. She is an ideal illustration of the intersectionality between
race, culture, gender, and class. When deciding what she would do for her future, Ana had to choose
between her cultural values and mainstream expectations, between her Mexican heritage and her
American mindset. After deciding to continue her education at Columbia University, Ana holds a
feminist conference aiming to bring more attention to gender and race based discrimination within the
workplace and the unrealistic beauty standards set forth by society for women. These two issues are
particularly prevalent in the United States and have widespread effects, therefore Ana would primarily
focus on them. Both issues are applicable to Ana herself and could very easily have negative
repercussions on her own life.

desegregating occupations, which would in turn, help reduce discriminatory treatment of workers.

Language And The English Language
Is Language powerful? It certainly is, but is it powerful to an extent that effaces any possibility of
controlling it? The answer to this question varies from perspective to perspective, but in order to give
a more solid response to this question, we have to acknowledge that the importance of comprehending
the influence of language is critical because it is one of the most essential things in humans lives,
which automatically makes it a topic of major relevance. This paper will be focused on the perception
of language within the texts How to tame a wild tongue by Gloria Anzaldua, and Politics and the
English language by George Orwell. These texts present divergent points of view in regards to the
power of language. Anzaldua supports the idea that language has a lot of power over humans, while
George Orwell believes that humans have power over language; however, both authors use their texts
to support that idea that humans should defend their language.
Anzaldua argues that our language determines who we are or the individual we want to become. The
following portion of the text appears after Anzaldua talked about how Spanish will no longer be the
mother tongue of most Chicanos and Latinos and it supports the idea previously mentioned about
identities: So, if you want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to
linguistic identity I am my language. . These words by Anzaldua illustrate the thought that language
shapes our identity and how we

Iran and Modernity
All states within the international system have to bow to the inevitable and embrace its inherent
dynamic force that determines the structure of their governance. Thus, no society within the
international arena can stay in voluntary solitary confinement and ward itself off modernity. Berman
defines modernism as any attempt by modern men and women to become subjects as well as objects
of modernisation, to get a grip on the modern world and make themselves at home in it
(Berman_1988_p. 5), which becomes increasingly troubled especially in relation to modernising the
societal system of the Muslim countries. One of the most salient examples demonstrating a feasible
solution to establishing a comparatively stable structure of governance, ... Show more content on

And in Article 2, the repugnancy clause is enshrined so that no laws can be contrary to the religion of
Islam and its interpretation in the Shia faith (Video_5.3_36:18). Successful incorporation of Islamic
principles into the Constitution embodies the principles of religious reformism explicitly underpinning
the profound formative role of Islam defining the legal identity of the country. Indeed, Iranian history
offers other quintessential examples of modernisation attempts invoking the spirit of emulation. Reza
Shah follows the trend of social modernisation while striving to further reshape the structure of Iranian
society by implementing a multitude of reforms including education health, transport or industrial
sectors. Despite their relative success, Shah s enforcement of western dress code encounters stiff
resistance of citizens again supported by the clergy. If adopting slightly simplistic approach, it was his
son backed by the Western powers, who leaves the most distinctive bad taste in the Iranians mouth
after instituting his reformist policy designed to secularise the country. Mohammad Reza Shah s reign
prepared a fertile ground for the 1978 Islamist Revolution. The most critical factors contributing to it
were the Shah s reassertion of control over the country after the coup orchestrated by foreign
intelligence services in 1953 defending the vital Western oil interests. This recurrent

Creativity can be described as the ability to bring something into existence; into being. Having said
that, nobody really knows exactly what it is: Creative moments can mysteriously show up in certain
situations and in context, while it can also fail when really needed.
From studies neurologists say that creativity paints a complex picture. The idea that the right brain is
where creativity happens with emotions while the left brain is based on rational, analytical and logical
thought is oversimplified. It has not yet been clearly established what happens during the creative
cognitive processes with respect to neural pathways.
However, psychologically speaking, there are certain personality traits or characteristics that define a
creative person. Researcher Scott Barry Kaufman at the Psychology department of New York
University says, in so many words, one major feature of the creative person is that they are more
complex individuals than the non creative... because of this he went on to

How Did The Cuban Regime Change Cuba In The 19th Century
At first glance, Cuba is a paradise, surrounded by green landscapes and shimmering oceans, yet
internally the fight for power takes over the country. In the 19th century, many Cuban s wanted to be
in power, although all for different reasons. Fulgencio Batista was known as a dictator, seen as the
enemy by many, but an ally to the United States. On the other hand, Fidel Castro was fighting against
Batista opposing everything Batista fought for. These two leaders were conflicting, both in their goals
for the country of Cuba, and their allies. As the leader of Cuba changed constantly from Batista to
Castro, the Cuban regime changed. This regime change influenced both American History and
Caribbean History. The regime change influenced many changes to history, like: the immigration of
Cubans to the United States, the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs, and more. Fulgencio Batista and
Fidel Castro, both Cuban leaders, influenced yet complicated the relationship between Cuba and the
United States a tremendous amount due to their opposing views and allies.

Castro strongly disagreed with Batista s changed to Cuba s government as ruler. He thought that
Batista was allowing the United States to exploit Cuba. The goal of the Cuban Revolution was for
Cubans to overthrow the U.S. control in Cuba and be able to form truly independent states (Westad

opposed to what the United States and Batista wanted to achieve for Cuba. Instead, his goals for the
revolution were to gain true independence. Cuba became independent on May 20, 1902. But since
then, Cuba has had a major power controlling it. Cuba was independent but not free thanks to the

The Presidential Selection Of 1860
The presidential selection of 1860 set the stage for the American Civil war. By 1860, the nation had
been at odds mostly up to that point regarding questions of states rights and slavery in the territories.
Southerners were livid over the preparation by an abolitionist, John Brown, to establish a slave
uprising at Harper Ferry, Virginia. This event garnered headlines all over the nation in newspapers and
magazines. On the other hand, the Northern Republic seemed equally infuriated by the Supreme Court
verdict in the case of Dred Scott v. Stanford, which affirmed free soil unconstitutional. The Northern
Democrats, however, struggled to convince the Americans that their guidelines of popular sovereignty
still made sense. Enter the presidential election of 1860, which brought these tribulations to a clash
with dramatic cost. The Democratic Party divided into three groups along their provincial lines, with
each person vying for control of the party and each holding dissimilar ideas about how to deal with
servitude in the West. Their candidates consisted of John C. Breckinride, John Bell, and Stephen A.
Douglas; their efforts would be rubbish, however, as Abraham Lincoln would be triumphant for the
Republican Party. Lincoln stood on the grounds that the West should be completely liberated of
slavery entirely; which apparently was sufficient as he won the election with less than forty percent of
the popular vote. On a side note about the election, fifty nine percent of the

How Did Popular Sovereignty Influence The Government
Popular Sovereignty has changed a lot with the people who had an influence on our government. In
1787 not very many people had an influence on our government. The only people whose opinion
mattered were white, old men with property. Now, in 2017, we have a lot more people that can express
their opinions and vote for what they agree with.
In 2017 all United States citizens can vote as long as their 18 years or older and registered. This has
allowed thousands of more people to vote. How did this huge of a change happen? From amendments,
acts, cases, and more. The first amendment gives everyone the right for petition, assembly, speech,
religion, and press. This gives everyone the right to speak their opinion of their political views,
religious beliefs, and ect. Only white men voting changed with the adding of the amendments 15th
and 19th. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 lead to the 15th amendment. This amendment gave people of
any race to be allowed to vote. All men of any race was given the rights to vote. Later on came the
19th amendment. The 19th amendment gave all women above the legal age of 21 the right to vote.
Eventually the voting age got lowered to 18. Boys being drafted at age 18 were complaining which

order of the day. These words would begin a period of violence where the enemies of the Revolution
were executed en masse. Between 1793 and 1794, thousands of French citizens were imprisoned and
hundreds were killed by a group called the Committee of Public Safety. They claimed they were
acting in the best interest of the people, but were, in fact, acting in the interest of wiping out their
political adversaries. The head of this committee was political leader Maximilien Robespierre. He was
referred to as the incorruptible by his peers because of his unwavering commitment to the Revolution.
By the end of this period however, he would fall victim to his own committee. This would be the end
of The Terror. The Terror cannot be isolated as a great event of the French Revolution without first
examining the events that lead to it. The flight of King Louis XVI and his family, the eventual
execution of the king and Marie Antoinette, the purge of the Girodins as a political group, and the
assassination of radical journalist, Jean Paul Marat, are a few of the significant events that lead to
terror being called the order of the day. Although there are many other significant events throughout
the French Revolution, the aforementioned occurrences are key in what led to the

Holbrook Perspective On Democracy
Holbrook s and Rose s perspectives on democracy is that some people are taking advantage of what
they have which isn t fair for the people who struggle to maintain their lifestyle with less, while other
people have more opportunities/privileges. Holbrook s response on democracy is that she feels that
they should have equal rights, just as she does. She finds it wrong that the government is careless
when it comes to the people that they think don t need the resources, supplies, when they really do. To
add on to, Holbrook writes on page 114, That same government that issues us two rolls per day, 94%
of the days since our last 6% cut. Two rolls. (Page 114). Holbrook says this to imply and emphasize
the fact that the government is stubborn and won t give more than two rolls per day which will. In
addition, Holbrook states, The same government that issues food stamps for kool aid, popsicles, and
tater tots, but not for toilet paper, like it s some privilege that poor folk don t need (Page 114).

innocent. Rose uses these following quotes to talk about what she thought as the theme/message.
Following this further, Rose conveys on page 104, What s the difference how long it takes? We

Decameron And The Canterbury Tales
Through out the end half of the semester, all the stories have had to face death, either their own or they
were the ones doing the killing. The action of death ends up helping the characters grow like within
The Decameron and even Hamlet has some growing points. Not only was death a main factor but all
these stories are super long and some tend to be hard to follow and keep track of like Beowulf and The
Canterbury Tales, were they bounce from one story to the other. To compare these four stories to death
would not be hard, mainly because it s a prominent aspect to the stories but the reason for the deaths
are all different, in The Decameron and The Canterbury Tales there is a major death that happens in
the prologue to show how a certain group ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beowulf gets called to take care of a monster problem for his friend Hrothgar who is the King of the
Danes and his people are getting slaughtered by a monster called Grendel. Long story short, he kills
Grendel and that upset Grendel s mother, who is like a troll, so now Beowulf has to deal with Grendel
s mother, which he does. After slaying the monsters, receiving gold, land from his own king, King of
the Geats, Beowulf doesn t die for many years until he has to go kill a dragon, which he dies from the
poison from the dragon not from the loss of blood. All of this is relevant because being the one to
bring death make Beowulf a hero and a king, he doesn t just grow but flourishes. He has already done
all the growing up needed to conquer all the problems he may encounter; he probably would have
survived the dragon bite if it was not for the poison. Death comes to Beowulf like it does to everyone
but that doesn t stop his story because someone wrote it down.
To finish this semester with these four stories, which where all centered around death and all had two
main common factors, death was either praised or mourned. Which is death is seen as a bad thing but
it is comes to the best and worst of us. Death tells a lot about the person who died, who it affected and

Homeless Get Out The Way Essay
Move Homeless, Get Out The Way!
The Clark County city government believe that homelessness is out of control and they put policies in
place to discourage it. For example, Metro (Las Vegas police officers) may allow a Tent City to pop up
here and there for people to live in their sleeping bags lined up along the streets near each other, but
when the word is passed down from their superiors for whatever reason to remove the homeless from
certain areas (it could be a business or casino complaining that there are too many homeless people
scattered in the streets making Las Vegas look bummy ), they will come by and tell everyone to leave
or move somewhere else. Eventually the homeless will come back to those same areas when the heat

When driving over certain bridges you will see them and they look like the aqueducts in Los Angeles
that you see in movies all the time, but only a bit smaller. There are several articles that cover the
homeless living in these storm drain tunnels from many reliable and not so reliable news sources.
From my perspective, the tunnels are where the antisocial homeless go and make shelter in their own
private sector away from the stresses and burdens of society. The storm drains were not really popular
when I was there, or maybe I just didn t know about them, moreover, the news articles try to make it
seem like this is the main place where all the homeless people come to congregate and live, which is
not true. I assume these news outlets want to portray the image that the homeless live so far from the
casinos and tourist areas that they cannot be seen or heard. When, in reality, they are a subculture that
is definitely a part of the city. I believe that since homelessness in Las Vegas have become a hot topic
as of date, the city and media outlets want to make potential visitors feel comfortable by alluding to
the fact that homelessness is out of sight out of mind. The reality is that homelessness is everywhere.
They are regular people who are fully integrated in society. They visit casinos and restaurants, ride
public transportation, and sometimes hang out on the Strip selling things.

Snowden And The United States
Unless you were hiding beneath a rock in 2014, you saw the nation s reaction to the release of
classified NSA documents by the infamous whistleblower Edward Snowden. Snowden, who worked
as the lead technologist for Dell, managed their accounts with the Central Intelligence Agency. It was
in this position that Snowden began to notice some classified documents that didn t make sense. These
documents contained information on the National Security Agency illegally spying on their own
citizens. It was at this time in 2012 that Snowden began downloading some of these files for himself.
It is estimated that he downloaded somewhere between 50,000 and 200,000 files on the espionage
efforts of the United States (Borrough, Ellison, Andrews, 2014). Now, Snowden needed to get the files
out to the people. He attempted to contact a few media outlets around the world who would not go
through the trouble to follow his strict encryption methods. Snowden eventually contacted
documentarian Laura Poitras, who had recently written an article on a separate whistleblower that
caught Snowden s attention. Poitras states in an interview with Salon.com that, ...he d contacted me
because my border harassment meant that I d been a person who had been selected. To be selected and
he went through a whole litany of things means that everything you do, every friend you have, every

The Lesson Plan On The Book Stone Soup Essay
The lesson plan that we chose to do our Drama Group Lesson was based on the book Stone Soup. I
suggested this book to the group as a good drama lesson, because I did my individual lesson plan on
the story Nail Soup and I thought that Stone Soup would be a great drama lesson for this class.
Another member in our group also brought up the idea of using Stone Soup as well, which caused us
all to agree on using this book for our lesson plan. Our meeting times were postponed due to one of
our members missing school for a week for a family emergency. While this one member was gone, I
conversed with the other group member and we thought it was best if we waited until the other group
member returned so she would feel included and would be able to contribute to the making of the
lesson plan. Once she returned we met at the Main Library. We met a total of two times; we were able
to create a full lesson plan on a Friday, which took us a total of about three hours to complete. We than
met the following Sunday to discuss any concerns and tweaks we would like to make to the lesson
plan. We only needed to meet for a half an hour, because we found minimal errors and thought we
seemed prepared and ready to present. We first started ready the book and found areas in the book that
could be used as a drama/play scene. We then collaborated and discussed different ways that we could
use the scene. For our story we found that there were three big scenes that could be used and we broke

Texting And Its Effects On Society
Texting is causing Illiteracy in society Did you know the human race became illiterate the moment
they started communicating by causing bad spellers, poor word structure and critical thinking and
comprehension level? Illiteracy is the lack of ability to read and write. In 3200 BC the Egyptian
Hieroglyphics was the longest communication towards one another. As time went on writing became
shorter than earlier years, causing the hieroglyphics to be less effective. The human race is constantly
evolving around new ways to communicate faster and shorter. Although texting is causing illiteracy in
society it is conveniently to society. Social Media such as texting is the next evolutionary step to
making the human race more illiterate. Some teachers and instructors believe its better for students to
abbreviate text then not. The reason behind this is they believe students have to be smart to know how
to abbreviate their words. The students develop an understanding of word basics and word structure.
Teachers and instructors claim students who don t abbreviate text have a harder time putting words
together. Other people thinks texting isn t causing illiteracy in society because they feel if you
abbreviate your words you should still be able to remember how to spell out the words. Some just
feels that texting with abbreviated words is better than spelling out the whole word because it takes
less time. Society just feel texting isn t what s causing illiteracy. The reason

A Brief Note On Executive Compensation And Non Monetary...
The term compensation refers to all forms of financial returns and tangible benefits that employees
receive in exchange for their time, talents, efforts, performance, and results (Bernardin, 2013).
Executive compensation is defined as the financial payments and non monetary benefits provided to
high level management in exchange for their work on behalf of an organization. The types of
employees that are typically paid with executive compensation packages include corporate presidents,
chief executive officers, chief financial officers, vice presidents, managing directors, and other senior
executives (Business Dictionary.com, 2016). Executive compensation is an aspect of business that
every major corporation, company, and organization has to manage. Although every major
organization or company utilizes some form of executive compensation, it may differ greatly from one
company to the next. Proper management of executive compensation is vital to the success and
progress of companies, corporations and organizations because of the impact that disbursement of
such high pay and benefits have on the financial status of any business and its shareholders.
The structure of compensation is important because it can help to create an outline on how managers
can effectively run companies and create value for shareholders. Pay packages and other benefits
should give high level executives incentives to run companies correctly and efficiently. It should also
make executives think in the long

Nonverbal Communication In My Family
For Thanksgiving, my family came to my house. My family was excited to meet the new boyfriend of
my cousin, Kelley. This would be our first time meeting him (other than stalking him on Facebook). I
picked Thanksgiving because it is an event that is filled with nonverbal communication. Whenever my
family gets together, I usually expect really loud laughter coming from someone at any given time.
Furthermore, the whole room is just really loud in general. We usually talk in loud volumes, speak
with our hands, make eye contact, hug, and lean forward when we are talking to each other. All of
these nonverbal communication norms say that everyone in our family gets along and loves each other
very much. But, bring a newbie into our group and I thought things would change. I was wrong.
When Kelley and Michael (her boyfriend) first arrived, there was a loud greeting from my mom. She
was complementing, or [expressing] nonverbal behaviors [that] match the thoughts and emotions [of]
the communicator, with her warm smile on her face (Adler and Proctor 217). She used paralanguage
to illustrate her excitement. Paralanguage refers to a message spoken [in a way that] can give the same
word or words many meanings (Adler and Proctor 230). In this context, she raised her voice in order
to show that she was excited to see Kelley and Michael. Upon her greeting, she raised her hands in
order to signal that she was going in for a hug. This gesture set precedent for the rest of the

The Modern Day System Of International Commerce
Introduction
The modern day system of international commerce has developed over roughly 200 years. Much until
about the end of the eighteenth century it was most unlikely to transact export trade as it is today
because of lack of technological infrastructure. The important legal framework which would have
made for the use of the bill of lading as a document of transfer was lacking. Today much of the world
s tonnage is transacted under cif contracts which debuted about 150 years ago.
In international trade, the sales contract is the heart of an export import transaction. It is however,
always supported by several other related contracts, reflecting the complexity of the transaction and
number of parties involved. Basic among these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because most of the statements as to the passing of risk under fob are as regards whether goods
are on board/loaded or not. They essentially do not deal with the constraint of damage or loss of goods
during loading. In Pyrene Co. Ltd v Scindia Navigation Co. Ltd a fire tender sold fob London
previously was damaged through the fault of the carrier while being carried onboard. This damage in
question occurred prior to the tender crossing the rail and the question that arose was whether the
shipowner was entitled to limit his liability as under the Hague Rules . If risk doesn t pass at the
beginning of the loading, when does it then pass? Is it when the goods move across the rail or when
goods are loaded onboard? Devlin J pointed out in Pyrene thus; The division of loading into two parts
are suited to more antiquated methods of loading than are now generally adopted and the ship s rail
has lost much of its nineteenth century significance. Only the most enthusiastic lawyer could watch
with satisfaction the spectacle of liablities shifting uneasily as the cargo sways at the end of a derrick
across a notional perpendicular projecting from the ship s rail
He went further to hold that parties were free to define their obligations as regards loading ; and that in
the case before him the carrier s had obligations which began

Advantages of autocratic leadership Style Advantages democratic leadership style
Reduced stress due to increased control: where the manager ultimately has significant legal and
personal responsibility for a project, it will comfort them and reduce their stress levels to know that
they have control over their fate. Positive work environment: a culture where junior employees are
given fair amount of responsibility and are allowed to challenge themselves is one where employees
are more enthused to work and enjoy what they do.
A more productive group while the leader is watching : the oversight that an autocratic manager exerts
over a team improves their working speed and makes them less likely to slack. Successful initiatives:
the process of consultation and feedback naturally results in better decision making and more effective
operations.

Theories of Social Evolution Herbert Spencer versus Franz Boaz
Herbert Spencer and Franz Boaz had two opposing theories on the social evolution
theory. Each theory was difficult to prove but great theories. But both theories had it s ups and
downs.
Herbert Spencer was born in England, he is best known for developing and applying the
evolutionary theory to philosophy and psychology. The evolutionary theory states that societies

they are.

Spencer compared societies by categorizing race and culture, which he viewed at one
term. Spencer felt race and culture were not different enough to be classified as two different
terms. Spencer believed that every race that belonged to a society is the same as the next, but some are
more evolved then others. A simple society developed into a complex society through prospective
steps. A society
can go only from simple to complex. The only time a society could go from complex to simple
was if a national disaster occurred, but he explained that the most evolved society would develop
back at a faster rate. Boaz was a Jewish German American anthropologist and ethnologist. His theory
on
social evolution stated that no truly pure race existed and no race is innately superior to any
other. He confirmed the differences in peoples were the result of historical, social and
geographic conditions and all people had equally developed cultures. Boaz was objective. He lived
within different societies around the world while collecting
data on everything he saw, from language, customs and history. He concluded that a society can
survive through corporation just as well as a society can through competition. How a society
survives depends on it s psychological conditions, what satisfies their human needs. No matter

  • 2. The Second Punic War Essay he Second Punic War (218 201 B.C.) was born out the growing rivalry between the empires of Rome and Carthage (Morey, 1901, p. 64). When the Carthaginian territory in Spain began to extend northward, Rome became concerned that an attack was imminent. This concern prompted Rome to seek a treaty with Carthage establishing a border along the Iberus river in norther Spain. Carthage respected the treaty until the death of Hasdrubal. Afterward the son of Hamilcar Barca, named Hannibal immediately broke the treaty by capturing the city of Saguntum. A Roman envoy was sent to Carthage to demand the surrender of Hannibal. Carthage refused and the Second Punic War began (Morey, 1901, p. 64). Over the next seventeen years Rome fought off the invasion of Hannibal s army in Italy. Carthage would withdraw from Spain entirely, as well as the islands between Italy and Africa. These islands included Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia. Masinissa, was recognized as the king of Numidia. Masinissa had assisted Scipio when the Roman forces landed in Africa. His title had been disputed by a Carthaginian ally named Syphax (Morey, 1901, p.70). The restoration of his royal title was repayment for his allegiance to Rome. Carthage was not absorbed into the empire, nor reduced to a province, rather it was considered a dependent state and was required to pay a tribute of 200 talents for fifty years. Lastly, Carthage would require permission from Rome in order to wage war (Morey, 1901, p. 71). In addition to the peace agreement there were other outcomes of the Second Punic War. Syracuse was added to the province of Sicily and the Spanish territory was divided into two new provinces, Hither and Farther. • 3. Hebrew Bible Identity The origin of the Hebrew Bible is unknown, but scholars believe the earliest collections of writings first five books date back to nearly 3,500 years ago. The Pentateuch consist of these first five books. The Old Testament, which it is also known as, influenced its time period and still continues to do so today. The exile of the Judean people led their scholars to preserve their cultural identity through the Hebrew Bible s usage of chiasm, repetition, and kinesthetic imagery. Each literary device was designed so the audience could memorize the details and elite could easily pass down the stories orally. In a society where only the professional elite read and wrote, The Bible was written down in a series of years by a serious of these elites. It is believed to be written after the Babylonian Captivity. The Judean people were first exiled to Babylon, and forced to assimilate into a society with a whole other creation myth. The people of Judah were uprooted from their homes and forced to a new land, Babylon. However, the exile ended at approximately 538 BCE when Cyrus The Great conquered Persia and released the Jews back to Palestine. Upon return, scholars believe the first words of The Bible were written. The first words were written because in times of grief and despair, religious growth follows. So, when the Jews from Babylon returned home, a sense of spiritual renewal occurred which forced the hands of scribes to document their faith, (Barton 369). In a time period ... • 4. A amp;P Essay It is very common for teenagers to wish to gain some freedom by earning a small income. This is often achieved through employment at fast food chains, markets, restaurants, and shops. As a result of the amount of time consumed by these occupations, much of a teenager s life tends to focus on the people and events that are central to these places of employment. Sammy, the main character in John Updike s story A amp;P, is a superb representation of the teen employee. p Updike places his character in a typical setting and allows the readers to view the events of the story from the perspective of a teen. By doing this, he makes it simple for readers to relate with Sammy and his experiences. In reflection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After working for approximately three years in a bicycle shop where this characteristic can be easily observed, I have found that customers will continue on their decided path of examining merchandise and comparing prices, without regard for any added stimuli. During the busier seasons, it seems especially true that one could, as stated by Sammy, set off dynamite . . . and the people would by and large keep reaching and checking (Updike 371). This characteristic alienates the employee from customers: in most cases, they are held to the belief that finding the lowest priced, lowest quality item is necessary; they expect the employee to understandingly ring up six pairs of checkered spandex cycling shorts that have been laying harmlessly dormant in the bargain bin since the 1980 s. Sammy identifies this idea also by stating, what do these bums do with all that pineapple juice? (Updike 371). p The effort some customers place into catching an employee s mistake could easily establish customers as the most abhorrent aspect of a teen s job experience in its self. The number of customers that possess this fine quality seems to be related to a function that increases with respect to age; it appears that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Assuming these things, and having the given knowledge, we are to answer the question, if you were on a ship leaving from New York, how many ships from San Francisco would you see in passing? Process At first, I was confused with this problem and did not know what to do. For this problem, I used only one problem and it was what helped me solve it. With my table group (Derick I), we did a simulation. We first drew out a large map with the points that every ship should reach at the start of every month. Then we kept feeding in the blocks (which we used to act as ships) and did the simulation. Using this strategy, we were able to find the solution. • 8. Pros And Cons Of Owning Exotic Pets How many people think it is okay to have an exotic animal as a pet? People do not care about the responsibilities that come with owning an exotic pet when they get a wild animal. There are many positives and negatives regarding owning exotic pets, but the negatives outweigh the positives greatly. Keeping these animals in captivity is not only harmful to others but harmful to the animal. When treated as pets these animals grow into adults and act aggressively to others around them, spread diseases, and enclosures cost a great amount and have to be created by professionals the majority of the time. Many people mistake domesticated animals with exotic animals and are okay with owning exotic pets. These wild animals are easy to deal with when they are small, but when they turn into adults they are more aggressive and harder to care for. Not all animals are trying to harm others, they are born to be in the wild and trained to fend for themselves (Lewis). Statistics show that more people die in car accidents every year than being killed by exotic animals, causing some to believe that it is okay to own exotic pets ( REXANO Proves That Politicians... ). This thought contradicts itself when the statistics of the amount of people being killed by animals were added. • 9. Feminist Representation Of Mythology In Wonder Woman s... The recent Wonder Woman cinematic remake has made major waves as a prime example of the increasing feminist influence on modern society. Despite the story s comic book origin, it contains many references and elements of ancient Greek myth. Mythology and other forms of storytelling have remained a constant reflection of societal values of that period, and remain so to this day. In the movie, Diana is a representation of ancient myth and the slow shift in societal preconceptions towards the ideology of the modern day. In the 2017 film Wonder Woman, the protagonist Diana can trace her origins back to the original comics in the 70 s. However, many of the people closest to her in the film can be found in ancient Greek myth, with slightly altered stories. In this modern myth, Diana s mother is Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. The Amazons as a whole are repeatedly mentioned in ancient myth as fierce female warriors with Hippolyta as their fearless leader. Famously Hippolyta was given a girdle by her father Ares, which Heracles was sent to retrieve as one of his impossible tasks, thus marking one of the first myths where the Greeks and Amazons interacted. This differs greatly from the film where Ares is the enemy rather than the father of the Amazons, reflecting a less barbaric and perhaps even positive outlook on the origins of the Amazons in the film. In this modern take Ares is shown as evil personified and positioning the Amazonians against him shows them as heroes rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She is an ideal illustration of the intersectionality between race, culture, gender, and class. When deciding what she would do for her future, Ana had to choose between her cultural values and mainstream expectations, between her Mexican heritage and her American mindset. After deciding to continue her education at Columbia University, Ana holds a feminist conference aiming to bring more attention to gender and race based discrimination within the workplace and the unrealistic beauty standards set forth by society for women. These two issues are particularly prevalent in the United States and have widespread effects, therefore Ana would primarily focus on them. • 11. Language And The English Language Is Language powerful? It certainly is, but is it powerful to an extent that effaces any possibility of controlling it? The answer to this question varies from perspective to perspective, but in order to give a more solid response to this question, we have to acknowledge that the importance of comprehending the influence of language is critical because it is one of the most essential things in humans lives, which automatically makes it a topic of major relevance. This paper will be focused on the perception of language within the texts How to tame a wild tongue by Gloria Anzaldua, and Politics and the English language by George Orwell. These texts present divergent points of view in regards to the power of language. Anzaldua supports the idea that language has a lot of power over humans, while George Orwell believes that humans have power over language; however, both authors use their texts to support that idea that humans should defend their language. Anzaldua argues that our language determines who we are or the individual we want to become. The following portion of the text appears after Anzaldua talked about how Spanish will no longer be the mother tongue of most Chicanos and Latinos and it supports the idea previously mentioned about identities: So, if you want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity I am my language. . These words by Anzaldua illustrate the thought that language shapes our identity and how we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus, no society within the international arena can stay in voluntary solitary confinement and ward itself off modernity. Berman defines modernism as any attempt by modern men and women to become subjects as well as objects of modernisation, to get a grip on the modern world and make themselves at home in it (Berman_1988_p. 5), which becomes increasingly troubled especially in relation to modernising the societal system of the Muslim countries. And in Article 2, the repugnancy clause is enshrined so that no laws can be contrary to the religion of Islam and its interpretation in the Shia faith (Video_5.3_36:18). Successful incorporation of Islamic principles into the Constitution embodies the principles of religious reformism explicitly underpinning the profound formative role of Islam defining the legal identity of the country. Indeed, Iranian history offers other quintessential examples of modernisation attempts invoking the spirit of emulation. Reza Shah follows the trend of social modernisation while striving to further reshape the structure of Iranian society by implementing a multitude of reforms including education health, transport or industrial sectors. Despite their relative success, Shah s enforcement of western dress code encounters stiff resistance of citizens again supported by the clergy. If adopting slightly simplistic approach, it was his son backed by the Western powers, who leaves the most distinctive bad taste in the Iranians mouth after instituting his reformist policy designed to secularise the country. Mohammad Reza Shah s reign prepared a fertile ground for the 1978 Islamist Revolution. How Did The Cuban Regime Change Cuba In The 19th Century At first glance, Cuba is a paradise, surrounded by green landscapes and shimmering oceans, yet internally the fight for power takes over the country. In the 19th century, many Cuban s wanted to be in power, although all for different reasons. Fulgencio Batista was known as a dictator, seen as the enemy by many, but an ally to the United States. On the other hand, Fidel Castro was fighting against Batista opposing everything Batista fought for. These two leaders were conflicting, both in their goals for the country of Cuba, and their allies. As the leader of Cuba changed constantly from Batista to Castro, the Cuban regime changed. This regime change influenced both American History and Caribbean History. The regime change influenced many changes to history, like: the immigration of Cubans to the United States, the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs, and more. • 17. The Presidential Selection Of 1860 The presidential selection of 1860 set the stage for the American Civil war. By 1860, the nation had been at odds mostly up to that point regarding questions of states rights and slavery in the territories. Southerners were livid over the preparation by an abolitionist, John Brown, to establish a slave uprising at Harper Ferry, Virginia. This event garnered headlines all over the nation in newspapers and magazines. On the other hand, the Northern Republic seemed equally infuriated by the Supreme Court verdict in the case of Dred Scott v. Stanford, which affirmed free soil unconstitutional. The Northern Democrats, however, struggled to convince the Americans that their guidelines of popular sovereignty still made sense. Enter the presidential election of 1860, which brought these tribulations to a clash with dramatic cost. The Democratic Party divided into three groups along their provincial lines, with each person vying for control of the party and each holding dissimilar ideas about how to deal with servitude in the West. Their candidates consisted of John C. Breckinride, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas; their efforts would be rubbish, however, as Abraham Lincoln would be triumphant for the Republican Party. Lincoln stood on the grounds that the West should be completely liberated of slavery entirely; which apparently was sufficient as he won the election with less than forty percent of the popular vote. On a side note about the election, fifty nine percent of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1787 not very many people had an influence on our government. The only people whose opinion mattered were white, old men with property. Now, in 2017, we have a lot more people that can express their opinions and vote for what they agree with. In 2017 all United States citizens can vote as long as their 18 years or older and registered. This has allowed thousands of more people to vote. How did this huge of a change happen? From amendments, acts, cases, and more. The first amendment gives everyone the right for petition, assembly, speech, religion, and press. This gives everyone the right to speak their opinion of their political views, religious beliefs, and ect. Only white men voting changed with the adding of the amendments 15th and 19th. Your glorious gift allowed me to see the elegant and vibrant horizon, disperse into a brilliant mixture of colours alongside the glimmering crystal. It was a silent reminder that I would never see her expression again; that I would never see her giggle at times of pure joy. At that moment my entire body filled with agony. When I asked her if all had been lost, I heard a calm yawn as she drew me into her arms. • 21. Robespierre And The Sans Culottes Declared Essay The month of September would be remembered as one of the bloodiest months in French history, in particular, September 5, 1793. On this day, Robespierre and the Sans Culottes declared terror is the order of the day. These words would begin a period of violence where the enemies of the Revolution were executed en masse. Between 1793 and 1794, thousands of French citizens were imprisoned and hundreds were killed by a group called the Committee of Public Safety. They claimed they were acting in the best interest of the people, but were, in fact, acting in the interest of wiping out their political adversaries. The head of this committee was political leader Maximilien Robespierre. He was referred to as the incorruptible by his peers because of his unwavering commitment to the Revolution. By the end of this period however, he would fall victim to his own committee. This would be the end of The Terror. The Terror cannot be isolated as a great event of the French Revolution without first examining the events that lead to it. The flight of King Louis XVI and his family, the eventual execution of the king and Marie Antoinette, the purge of the Girodins as a political group, and the assassination of radical journalist, Jean Paul Marat, are a few of the significant events that lead to terror being called the order of the day. After slaying the monsters, receiving gold, land from his own king, King of the Geats, Beowulf doesn t die for many years until he has to go kill a dragon, which he dies from the poison from the dragon not from the loss of blood. All of this is relevant because being the one to bring death make Beowulf a hero and a king, he doesn t just grow but flourishes. From my perspective, the tunnels are where the antisocial homeless go and make shelter in their own private sector away from the stresses and burdens of society.
