Basic Responsibilities Of Non Profit Board Of Director
Basic Responsibilities of Non Profit Board of Director
Abstract
As world business has changed dramatically during recent years, chargers of business entities,
including Non Profit entities, urged to find a perfect rules in order to enhance their competence within
an excellent environment. To fulfill the requirement, the National Center for Non Profit Board has
issued a paper on Ten Basic Responsibilities of Non Profit Boards to clarify the roles and
responsibility of the board about 30 years ago. This regulation paper requires ten basic responsibilities
including Determine the organization, Select the executive director, Support the executive and review
his/her performance, Ensure effective organizational planning, Monitor and strengthen programs and
services, Ensure adequate resources, Protect assets and provide financial oversight, Build a competent
board, Enhance the organization s public standing and Ensure legal and ethical integrity (Richard T.
Ingram, Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards, Second Edition (BoardSource 2009). We will
first introduce the Board of Director and purpose of Non Profit Board of Director, then introduce all of
ten responsibilities in detail and finally make extension about it.
1. What is Board of Directors
A Board of directors, in my opinion, is a body of one person or a group of people who should oversee
the performance of a organization. The goal of Board of Directors is to protect the organization s
assets and to use source to

The London Blitz Essay
In September of 1940 through May of 1941 there was a strategic bombing attack
that was lead by the Germans targeted towards London and other cities located in
England, this was known as The Blitz. The Germans aimed the bombs mostly at
populated cities, dock yards, and factories.
The bombing on London began on September 7, 1940 and lasted for 57
consecutive nights. During these nights of bombing people took shelter in warehouse
basements, and in underground subway stations with no privacy and poor sanitation
facilities.
British radar, detected the huge formation, the Observer Corps started to count the
mass of German bombers in the sky, then came a warning call, ... Show more content on

The bombing actually brought the English people
together.
Between five and six o clock on the evening of Saturday 7th September, some
320 German bombers supported by over 600 fighters flew up the Thames and
proceeded to bomb Woolwich Arsenal, Beckton gas Works, a large number of
docks, West Ham Power Station, and then the city, Westminster and Kensington.
They succeeded in causing a serious fire situation in the docks. An area about 1½
square miles between North Woolwich Road and the Thames was almost
destroyed, and the population of Silvertown was surrounded by fire and had to be
evacuated by water. At 8.10pm some 250 bombers resumed the attack which was
maintained until 4.30 on Sunday morning. They caused 9 conflagrations, 59 large
fires, and nearly 1,000 lesser fires. Three main line railway termini were put out
of action, and 430 persons killed and some 1,600 seriously injured. After the fire
brigades had spent all day in an effort to deprive the enemy of illumination, some
200 bombers returned in the evening (Sunday 8th) to carry on the assault. During

Chinese Expansion To Africa Essay
Summary: Chinese financial injections have been supporting economies of many African countries in
recent years. Chinese business enterprises created new working positions, helped to improve
infrastructure, brought new technologies and also cheap products which could African people afford
more then the ones exported from Europe or USA. However, later it appeared that China s increasing
influence doesn t lead African countries only to prosperity and better life but started to cause
problems. Nowadays, there are many questions whether Chinese expansion to Africa has positive or
negative impact, especially in terms of respecting human and worker s rights, environmental issues,
protection of local labor markets and constantly blooming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, China s neutral status towards dreadful dictators in places like Zimbabwe or Sudan
makes no contributions to regime changes in these countries. That s the main difference between
China s and other countries development aid. Unlike China, the World Bank, EU or most of other
countries see the main source in heading for better improvements in political, legal and educational
system in African countries and these are the areas where their financial funds are flowing. The help to
Africa should be based on effort which would change the system in most of the countries and in this
case money is just small instrument, there needs to be somebody who would really care and observe
the situation. However, in case of China, apparently the most important drive force is a possible
benefit. Another problem connected with Chinese presence in Africa is the environmental protection.
Comparison of Investors in Africa Chinese investments in Africa are usually concentrated in industry
areas which are environmentally very sensitive; such as mining, oil exploration, infrastructure projects
etc. China wants to make previously inaccessible resources accessible but this strategy has serious
environmental risks because of developing projects in ecologically fragile regions and in protected
territories and in countries with weak governance

Apologetic Artice Review
The following article was written by David Wheeler for publication in an apologetics encyclopedia.
However, the subject matter of the article is equally as important in the realm of evangelism.
Considering that most approaches to evangelism, including Share Jesus Without Fear, are basically
driven by supplying proper information , at what point does one s incarnational lifestyle enter into the
equation? Is evangelism only the communication of proper information, or does it also include the
total person in reference to one s outward behavior that validates the information to the world? Is it
both information and incarnation ?

The same argument can be applied to other areas of traditional apologetics. Consider for a moment the
important issues related to the resurrection of Christ. While the historical and biblical aspects are
imperative in validating the authenticity of the event, one must never ignore how that miraculous
event transforms the individual expressions of a Christian s daily life.
For instance, a Muslim friend who converted to Christianity communicated that it was not the great
arguments of traditional informational apologetics that finally drew him to examine the claims of
Christ. On the contrary, it was the consistent caring actions of a high school friend who lived out a
resurrected life before him.
It was not that his friend ever stopped verbally sharing the informational truths about Christ with him.
The truth is that he boldly shared the gospel on many occasions. The bottom line was the simple
undeniable fact that his friend s life incarnationally validated the biblical truths he graciously
espoused.
In fact, the former Muslim admitted that he regularly abused and embarrassed his schoolmate hoping
that he would grow weary and leave him alone. In the end, the former Muslim became a Christian
because he could not argue with the evidences of a transformed life that ultimately became a tool of
the Holy Spirit prompting his heart to further examine the directions of his faith.
It is here that both the incarnational and informational

Life According to Sartre
The Room by Jean Paul Sartre takes us on a journey through the conflict of man with the world. Eve
makes the choice to sacrifice self identity to care for her mentally ill husband Pierre. In the beginning
of the book The Wall and Other Stories Sartre invites us to interpret the text from an existentialist
point of view. So we must understand Sartre philosophical meaning of life.
What is the meaning of life? Jean Paul Sartre defines life as first accepting our own faults and
strengths, to then understand that the world exists regardless of our actions, and it is only when we
actively participate and take responsibility for our place in the world do we honestly experience life.
In Sartre s autobiography The Words he explores the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For Sartre, the moment Eve decides she will kill Pierre , when his mind is lost to his dementia, is the
most sane thing Eve does. She has been faced with a truth, Pierre is in sane without any possibility for
recovery, and she takes that moment and makes a choice to end his suffering and hers. She is not
hiding from the choice and is taking responsibility for that action. Hence in sanity is Pierre s life and
self identity, but Eve has another identity to explore. Eve can t merely state I am the wife of a mentally
ill husband, but I am Eve now what am I going to do. What I am I to do with this external force and
mend it with a choice of action? This is also why for Sartre close relationships are doomed to failure.
In order for love, friendship to occur your desire to please the other will undoubtedly cause a friction
with your inner self. At some point you must deny your desire for the other, or deny your humanity.
Also the object in life, your choice, and the others choice must be mended harmoniously. Otherwise,
and in most cases relationships are doomed to failure. Hell is other people (Sartre) She is unable to
leave the dark apartment; her relation with parents, friends, and people is strained; she is no longer a
part of the world.

The Private Eye By Brian K. Vaughan
In the graphic novel, The Private Eye, by Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin, and Munsta Vicente, a
society is depicted where people do not use advanced technology. In an event known as the cloudburst
, a whole society has their personal information revealed. Due to the horrors of having no privacy, the
people went into hiding for protection. Since the leaks of information came from using advanced
technology, the people also decided to no longer use this type of material. This type of technology
uses the Internet, which was also destroyed for personal safety. Now the people live in a society where
libraries and books serve as forms of information. Due to the fact that the people did not have access
to the Internet, they actually became more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the side effects of technology is how all information is eventually scrambled and means
something incredibly different than the original idea. Comparatively, Telephone , a popular children s
game, is where a child makes up a sentence and the sentence is passed by word of mouth in a circle.
Once the sentence is back to the beginning, the children often laugh at how different the sentence is
from the original. This is exactly what the advanced technology does. In the process of trying to
understand the original message, advanced technology can make everything out to be a lot worse than
it actually is. What once was an inspiring story about how to grow a vegetable can turn into a story
about animal rights. With technology, information is moved around a lot faster, meaning there is a
higher chance that something will be misunderstood in the middle. Everything that is put through
technology is changed and altered. Correspondingly, a techno pessimist believes that people should
solve problems, They do not have faith in technological fixes to solve social problems, instead
emphasizing moral or political solutions (Techno optimism versus Techno pessimism). A techno
pessimist believes that problems should not be solved by technology. Technology will always use
logical problem solving techniques. Humans will always include emotional connection to create
solutions. Technology may miss vital information that only the human heart can process and find

Social Relations Between Economic Organizations And The...
1.1 Introduction.
From what process(es) does the code, the simulacrum, the object as a sign, emerge?
According to Baudrillard, Symbolic Exchange is a form of exchange which both maintains and
organizes divergent social relations and hierarchies [1]. The difference between Symbolic Exchange
and other types of exchange, is that the value of an exchanged object does not value the act of
exchanging it [1].
Fascination surrounding the dynamics of production, distribution, and consumption have been focal
points in the dialogue of politics since Plato s archetypal philosophies [2]. New life was delivered into
these issues in the modern world, through stringent analysis and critique by Karl Marx, within his
exploration regarding the relationship between economic organizations and the distribution between
power in society. Although, in spite of Marx s prediction regarding capitalism s looming collapse [3],
capitalism continues to expand [4]. Jean Baudrillard s concept of Symbolic Exchange portrays a
formidable role in comprehending why Karl Marx s prediction in regards to the disintegration of
Capitalism has not come to fruition. Baudrillard adds to the preexisting Marxian notion of use value
and exchange value proposing that, in contemporary consumer orientated society, various
commodities inhibit a symbolic value which comprises their status , and thus, their power [1].

Baudrillard argues that our perceived social reality is merely a

Thank You For Arguing Summary
In section 4 of Thank You For Arguing by Jay Heinrichs, Heinrichs starts out by explaining Cicero s
five canons of persuasion that include: invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Invention
is the start of the persuasion and the thought of what is wanted to be accomplished. Then, the issue
itself needs to be figured out and resolved. Finally, the person needs to think about the audience and
what their values are. That will get an individual a start on the art of persuasion. Arrangement is how a
person is going to arrange an argument so the persuasion is the most impactful. Arrangement comes
down to this rule of thumb Ethos first. Then logos. Then pathos. (283). Arrangement follows an
outline that can be used starting with introduction, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, refutation is developed to win the argument and completely smash your opponents facts and
argument. At the end, Heinrichs explains the conclusion where the individual states their best points
from the argument. Style is how a person expresses their thoughts and words. Proper language is one
of the styles which are words that suit the occasion and my audience (287). Heinrichs also explains the
style of clarity, which is speaking to make the words obvious and straight facts. Also, Memory is used
to create an image in the audience s minds to make them feel and imagine what the individual is
talking about to persuade the audience more impactfully. Finally, the fifth canon of persuasion is
delivery and how the person uses body language, along with your voice, rhythms, and breathing (290).
Voice is key in delivery especially in the volume of the voice and how the audience emphasises the
tone of the speaker. Towards the end of the novel, Heinrichs reiterates on a few keywords including:
goals, ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos. Heinrichs also states examples of situations when these tools
are needed. An example is when a person wants their book club to read a

All Quiet On The Western Front Film Analysis
The three films we were assigned to watch this unit were different in so many ways; Mutiny on the
Bounty recounted the 1789 rebellion against William Bligh aboard the HMAV Bounty, It Happened
One Night told the somewhat cliche story of a wealthy woman falling for a white collar reporter, and
All Quiet on the Western Front illustrated the nature of World War 1 and its effects on those involved.
Each film was not similar in plot to any other, yet each one falls on the list of the Greatest Films of All
Time. I think the greatness of All Quiet on the Western Front lies in the fact that the story told a
different kind of war story; instead of glorifying war and painting the characters out to be heroes, the
audience was given a sad story where those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene is so important because it demonstrates the fragility of human beings. Paul, who has
proven to be much more than just a war machine, proves his humanity by reaching for that butterfly;
something so many of us might have done as children, and in that small moment of peace, where he
seems to have forgotten of his surroundings, he is immediately brought back to reality as his life is
taken from him. I think one of the strengths of It Happened One Night is its dialogue. Although the
story, in my opinion, is not totally stellar, the dialogue is quick and witty; allowing the film to be
entertaining all over. There aren t many dull moments in the film and the way in which the actors
perform their dialogue not only keeps you intrigued but makes it somewhat relatable, regardless of the
time period. Mutiny on the Bounty is similar to It Happened One Night in its acting. I think the
strength of this film was through the acting, which was very enticing. Although I didn t completely
understand what was going on at all times; there was never a moment where the actors actions seemed
so outrageous or overdone that it brought me out of the world of the

Loneliness In Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck portrays loneliness in many ways. A great deal of people are
lonely throughout the whole book. Evidence shows that when our requirement for social connections
isn t met, we fall apart mentally and/or physically. Although there are negative effects, it is not
irregular. A few examples of people that are lonely in Of Mice and Men include, Candy, Curley s wife,
and Crooks. Steinbeck shows loneliness through racism, sexism, and ageism. Crooks has an extremely
valid reason to be lonely. Of Mice and Men takes place during the depression, which falls in the 1920

Explain How The Civil War Changed America
The Civil War changed America in huge ways that impacted everyone, even you today. The Northern
leadership and men felt freedom was entitled to everyone and fought to extinguish slavery. The
Southern leadership and soldiers fought to keep slavery and to become independent from the Union.
620,000 in the Civil War and 644,000 in all other conflicts . According to (battlefields.org) this is the
death count that was found at the end of the war versus the deaths in all other conflicts. Many lives
changed for the worst but most for the better because slavery was a thing of the past. The Civil War
redefined America by extinguishing slavery and making every man a free man and starting a road to a
united country The Civil War was a changing point for every American, North and South. Slavery
which held its prominence in the South was ruled illegal by the North after the war. All Americans
were declared free men and women. The original goal of our country, freedom for every man, was
finally fulfilled. The road to recovery for the African American population began. Even though slavery
was a distant memory it still had a effect on people. Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more

Teen Pregnancy And The Teenage Pregnancy Rates
Pregnancy and parenthood is a significantly life altering event that anyone could experience. These
two life events inquire not only physical but mental obstacles. What happens when these events occur
when your body is not physically developed and your mental maturity is not fully ripened? This
happens too often amongst the teen age population. In the United States, teen pregnancies are the
highest when compared to other developed countries. Teen births account for 10% of all births in the
United States. (NCHS) While the only way to solve this issue is to educate teens on prevention,
Hispanics continue to have the highest teen pregnancy rates because lack of financial resources, lack
of formal sexual education, and cultural beliefs.
With Hispanic teenagers accounting for over a quarter of teenage pregnancy there are many factors
affecting the Hispanic communities and families that cause these numbers to be so high. And at 53%
of Hispanic females becoming pregnant at least once by the time they are 20 years old is an extremely
large percentage that causes the Hispanic populace to have the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the
country. Poverty is another root of teenage pregnancy among Hispanic youth. What has been seen in
history in the U.S. is the endless spiral that faces families that are in poverty. When one young woman
becomes pregnant her child if female has a 22% increased chance of becoming a pregnant teenager
herself. With this comes the possibility of

The Portrayal Of Archaeology In Indiana Jones Fox
Archaeology in the media is portrayed as very high risk and thrilling. Not to diminish the excitement
of archeology, but the portrayal of archeology in movies is extremely exaggerated and far from
accurate. In Indiana Jones Indy is often plagued by so many forces that try to set him back from his
archaeological goals. He faces looters, booby traps, destructive weather, etc...
Looters, while they are a very real problem and threat to the modern search for lost history are
depicted as bloodthirsty evil individuals on a self serving mission for power and wealth. I think that
we as a society can agree that looting is wrong and that it is a selfish practice that diminishes the
knowledge and value of our history as a whole. But looters are not usually what they are made out to
be in the film. More often than not, looters are underprivileged people that loot to support their family.
Many times they are misguided and/or ignorant to their actions consequences. They are not getting
rich from their finds, and are not innit to get wealthy and power. It is a sad cycle in reality that often
starts with young children. Many times groups of children would loot during the day to pass time or

Les Miserables Research Paper
Good Morning/Afternoon ladies and gentlemen. A hero for our time; we are bombarded with
superhero movies all year round. They are the characters children look up to in our present society.
But are these really heroes? Do we need someone else to look up to? What makes a hero a hero?
Les Miserables is an exceptional film and is a very good example of the hero narrative. The film
follows the lives of a group of characters from 1815 to the Paris Uprising of 1832.
Some people would say that a hero for our time implies the hero needs to have lived within the past 20
years to be for our time and to understand what is happening in our world. According to those people
Les Miserables would not fit their criteria due to it being set in 1815 32. This is far from being correct;
Jean Valjean is a hero and can be easily applied to the modern day.

When the film begins, we meet Jean Valjean who is a convict. The prison guard Javert is watching

Analysis Of George Orwell s The Elephant
George Orwell began the essay with his perspective on British domination. He stated that it is evil and
alongside of that it is oppressive. He felt hatred and guilt toward himself and the Burmese people. The
people of Burma did not feel threatened because the narrator of the story had killed the elephant. The
Burmese people have lost their dignity and integrity while trying to fight off the British imperialism.
Orwell uses allegories to describe his experience of the British imperialism and he had his own view
of the matter of slaying the elephant. He successfully used ethos, pathos, and logos by attracting the
audience to read his story. He had to make a scene in the story to make the people of Burma feel the
same emotion. The elephant was the one reason why it makes this story emotional. He used logos to
show that he can kill the elephant even if he does not want to so that it does not make him look fool.
Logos is used to show logic and persuade an audience by reason. When the author talks about the
irony and the reality of imperialism, he compares himself to the figure of a sahib. The comparison to
the sahib is a term that was used to name aristocratic rulers. It is an important symbol of their cultural
image. British imperialism is a hostile environment and does not justify exploitation by controlling the
Burmese people. The story sets the tone of the author s story to be un comforting. This story shows his
flaws and how he taunts others, even his own people of Burma.

Bonding Chemical Properties
The overall purpose of this lab was to see how bonding effects chemical and physical properties. The
lab consisted of 6 compounds Dodecanoic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Duodecose, Octadecanoic Acid,
Potassium Bromide and Amylose. Using these compounds, tests were conducted on their appearance,
solubility in distilled water, conductivity and melting point. There are 3 groups these compounds can
be organized into. One group is Dodecanoic Acid and Stearic Acid. Another group is Duodecose and
Amylose and the last group is Sodium Chloride and Potassium Bromide. These compounds are put
into these groups because of their similar structures and properties. Dodecanoic Acid and
Octadecanoic Acid are in the same group because they are both made up long chains of carbon and
carboxyl groups, and are non polar covalent bonds. In non polar covalent bonds electrons are shared
equally, and held together by atoms. Both Dodecanoic Acid and Octadecanoic are made up of carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen. The data shows they are insoluble, this is because of their long chains of
carbon, and a carboxyl group (COOH) at the end causes them to have increasing hydrophobic which

hypermobility, reduced pain threshold, lower bone strength and psychological issues are all being
studied as contributing factors. RLS manifests as an uncomfortable sensation in the legs and creates
the urge to move the legs around to escape the discomforting sensation. The legs are primarily
affected, but the arms and other areas of the body may also be affected as well. Approximately 10% of
the population is affected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike in RLS, children with GPs do not experience relief from discomfort when moving the leg
around or walking. Similarities between GPs and RLS Based on clinical findings, GPs and RLS have
some similarities that can easily lead to the two being confused with each other. For starters, they both
have a similar age of onset and range of duration as well as a predominance during the nighttime.
Children with these conditions do not typically experience any limitations to activity or any limping.
Furthermore, there is no laboratory evidence of underlying pathology in either condition and there are
no physical and neurological anomalies found on examination. In addition to this, both disorders tend
to have symptoms that last for at least 3 months and do not cause a general lack of wellbeing aside
from their defining clinical features. Sources

Boxing
According to Bare Knuckle Boxing the earliest evidence of boxing dates back to Egypt around 4000
B.C. The sport of boxing began gathering the attention of many men who want to test their strengths,
agility, and evasiveness.
The ancient fighters used thongs, wrapped around their hands, as the primitive form of a glove.
(HBKB). Back then fights would take place with some sort of cloth to wrap around the hands of the
fighters. Bare knuckle fighting developed throughout the years. Fighters would rather use something
around their hands as opposed to using their bare knuckles which would have signs of previous

These classes are the original categories for the fighters. Throughout the 20th century, numerous sub
divisions came into play when fighters of various between weight classes were involved. These
divisions became known as super, junior and light classes. Many clubs and organizations even use
these classes to help student learn, gain skills, and improve their knowledge of the sport as a whole.
The fathers in the boxing wanted their son(s) to grow up and be fighters as well or at least be able to
protect themselves or the family without using weapons. Many even taught their son(s) at home or put
them in clubs to train. At this time, people actually fought or disputes and did not run to get a

Northern Mesopotamia And. Cahokia And Monte Alban
Small communities in southern Mesopotamia evolved to one of the earliest states due to
environmental changes that occurred between the Ubaid and Uruk periods. These environmental
changes such as the creation of Arabo Persian Gulf increased population in certain regions, which in
turn increased competition, warfare, and optimal settings for trade. All this lead to some of the earliest
states being formed in Southern Mesopotamia.
Cahokia and Monte Alban are two examples of primary states that were formed in Mesoamerica due
to their competition level. Monte Alban used strategic warfare tactics to get control over regions that
were rich in resources in order to do create a sustainable state. On the other hand because of Cahokia s
lack of control over distant regions, their state destructed in a very short time period, concluding that
competition was the main reason for early state formation.
In the later years of Northern Mesopotamia civilization, the climate changed dramatically causing the
collapse of several states in the region. Volcano eruptions, increased degree of dryness, and other
changes in the climate destroyed the agriculture in the area causing people to relocate to other states.
This article solidifies the view that environmental changes are the only reason states formed in certain
regions in the first place.

William Dean Howells Influence On American Writing
William Dean Howells was an American novelist and critic who significantly influenced the American
society and the literature world in the 19th and 20th century America. Born on March 1st, 1837 in
Ohio, Howells became a writer at a young age. Howells is best known for his realist writings that
focused on depicting the lives of the middle class Americans. His realist novels often depict the social
issues in post Civil War America. Howells is considered as the father of realism and is recognized as a
major American writer who was a contributor to American literature (William Dean Howells). I
believed William Dean Howells should be considered as a major American writer. First, Howells had a
lifetime experience with writings. Influenced by his father who was a journalist, Howells began his
career as a writer at a young age. Although Howells never had much education, his experiences in
writing sharpened his skills. Howells first poem was published in 1852 in the Ohio State Journal
(Baym 374). Until his death, William Dean Howells had published over 50 novels and poems. His
experiences as a writer led him to become successful and an undefeatable figure in the field of

the praise of being faithful to his own ideal, of practising diligently his own canons of art. He himself

How Does The Crucifixion In The Dream Of The Rood
In The Dream of the Rood, an Anglo Saxon poem written in the early Middle Ages, Christ s death and
burial is described in a manner which is startlingly different from the original biblical accounts. In
order to highlight the important victory of the crucifixion, the poet of The Dream of the Rood
describes Christ as an aggressive warrior who boldly confronts and defeats sin. This description is
constant with the honor and courage so highly valued in the early medieval culture. The words used to
describe Christ s approach to the crucifixion in The Dream of the Rood reveal the poet s conscious
choice to portray Jesus as a purposeful courageous warrior:
Then the young hero (who was God Almighty)
Got ready, resolute and strong in heart.
...the warrior embraced [the cross].
Instead of simply using the word Christ, the poet calls Jesus the young hero and the warrior. The poet
also presents a warrior like image of Christ by portraying Jesus exuberantly preparing for combat
rather than being lead passively to the cross. Where the Bible ... Show more content on

Where the book of John says that Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit, the poet of The Dream
of the Rood says that Christ sent forth his spirit. This small difference between these two accounts is
important because the poet of The Dream of the Rood does not suggest that Jesus gently give up his
spirit, but rather that he forcefully and willfully ended his life, in complete control of the situation
until the end. Just as The Dream of the Rood poet omits details in the biblical accounts of the
crucifixion that imply Jesus was a passive participant in his death, he or she de emphasizes the
disgrace, humiliation, and indignity of Christ s position. Nowhere in The Dream of the Rood is it

An Internship Is A Professional Program
Introduction In the recent years employers are more interested in hiring new workers with a handful of
experience in their field rather than their qualifications. An internship is a professional program that
provides practical experiences to students in which they learn and can reflect back on for their future
careers. Internships are increasingly becoming more evident in the work force as it helps give
employers an opportunity to find good quality employees and in return provides good experience for
the intern. Participating in internships, no matter paid or unpaid, is believed to strengthen the
probability of acquiring a top notch career in the competitive market. However, the difference between
paid and unpaid interns can dramatically change that window of opportunity for those seeking to
engage in it. As unemployment rates continue to rise, the competition for internship increases. A large
part of the demand market includes newly graduated students who just finished a high educational
degree in hopes to outshine their peers who are pursuing the same job. A significant amount of these
young people are willingly taking on unpaid internships with the risk of them being unable to sustain
their financial need. This ultimately hinders them from climbing up the social ladder (DiMaria, 2013).
In addition to this problem, although there are a few unpaid internships out there that unprejudiced and
moral, some employers who see unpaid internship as an opening for free labor with

Summary Of Niebuhr s Moral Man And Immoral Society
It is human nature for individuals to act differently, and often immorally, when part of a larger group.
In chapter 5 of Niebuhr s Moral Man and Immoral Society, Niebuhr examines the attitudes of
privileged classes as a group. Niebuhr is correct in his argument that the economic standing of a group
determines their ethical and social outlook. His argument that a group formed from similar economic
conditions will share similar perspectives of society is supported by the observations by Gilkey,
Nerburn, Plato and Kotlowitz. In chapter 5, Niebuhr explains how dominant groups characterize their
morals, stating [t]he moral attitudes of dominant and privileged groups are characterized by universal
self deception and hypocrisy (Niebuhr 117). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Mrs. White knows that the housing solution is just, she can comfortably say no to giving up
her space on the moral grounds of protecting her son from bad influences. This justification of
immorality by using reason supports Niebuhr s argument that the privileged class will rationalize their
immorality in order to keep their privileges. This idea is also seen in Neither Wolf nor Dog by Kent
Nerburn when Dan, a native American, discusses the colonization of America. Dan criticizes the
dominant white class and how they suppressed the Native American culture. He explains that [y]ou
killed us by turning our land into a piece of paper and bags of flour and blankets and telling us that
was enough (Nerburn 50). The taking of their land and oppression of Native Americans and their
culture was morally justified with the exchange of land for food and household items. These
exchanges allowed the privileged class, white people, to justify the oppression that was taking place
since they convinced themselves that they had made a fair trade. The dominant class also believes that
their special privileges are compensation for doing important or useful jobs (Neibuhr 117). The
privileged class believes that the lower classes cannot perform the same functions due to lack of
education or ability. This argument assumes that those in

An Analysis of “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”
An analysis of Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night This poem was written by Dylan Thomas who
had been acknowledged as one of the most important Welsh poets of the 20th century. The poem is a
son s plea to his dying father. Thomas shows four different kinds of people in four stanzas wise men,
good men, wild men and grave men so as to encourage his father to fight against death rather than to
accept in silence. The tone used in the poem is passionate and intense. Rage, rage against the dying of
the light (line 3) is an attitude the old is supposed to hold. Old age should burn and rave at close of day
(line 2) is exactly the theme that the poet wants to pass on. Though wise men at their end know dark ...

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors (line 14) This is a metaphor that means grave men never
distinguish their hope and always hold a passionate attitude towards life. A disabled person still can
fight against the doom. Why healthy people give in to death? In the last stanza, the poet points out that
this poem is particularly written for his dying father. Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I
pray. (line 17) In this sentence, curse , bless , fierce and tears all have the rhyme s which makes the
tone soft sounding. Thomas begs his father to die with anger, not humility. Whatever the ways, the
curse or bless, the poet can bear it so long as his father not surrender to death. This poem is structured
in a form called villanelle, which has 19 lines long, but only uses two rhymes. In this poem, night ,
light , right , bright , flight , sight and sight all end with t sound and day , they , bay , way , gay and
pray all end with ei sound. The rhythm of this poem follows as aba, aba, aba, aba, aba, abaa .
Moreover, it is clear to see that first five stanzas are triples and last stanza is a quatrain, which is also
another standard of villanelle. There are two refrains in the poem. Do not go gentle into that good
night. (line 1) is repeated in line 6, line 12 and line 18. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. (line

Freedom In America
The United States of America is and has always been very close to realizing democracy s ideal of a
country where there is liberty and justice for all , though a number of factors have conspired to move
the country away from them in the past, and threaten to do so in our immediate future. Though their
outcomes have varied considerably over the years, the main factors causing the U.S to stray from its
ideals of freedom and equality have always been one or both of the following factors discrimination
and war. These factors are perennial, affecting every nation that has ever existed and probably every
nation that will exist, and our nation s reaction to them has been on par with that of every other nation

One such factor is war. During World War I, the Espionage Act of 1917 was used to jail prominent
critics of American intervention in the war among them, Eugene V. Debs, four time presidential
candidate (Ball, 146). Shortly after the war ended, A. Mitchell Palmer used the powers granted by
the act to conduct mass arrests and deportation of hundreds of foreign residents (Emert, 54, 55, 56).
During World War II, the federal government forcibly relocated thousands of Japanese Americans into
what were essentially concentration camps (Cooper, 10, 11). The Japanese internment was
implemented in the name of combating a virtually non existent military threat, for fear that Americans
of Japanese descent might aid the Empire of Japan (Cooper, 63). After the September 11 attack on the
World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon and the declaration of the War on Terror, the USA
PATRIOT Act was hurriedly conceived and passed into law (Ball, 38). Included in the law were
provisions for roving wiretaps, the sharing of information between criminal probes and intelligence
agencies and secret searches of private property in violation of the Constitution (Ball, 57, 74, 81). War

Rupi Kaur As A Hero Essay
People paint heroes in colors and words seemingly out of nowhere; however, these heroes are real in
their own way. They may not have the superpowers, if they do have them, as described and shown, but
there are qualities that were admired enough for them to be created. Heroes are very much real, not
just something in a book. They are also human with human designs and faults. This makes them
likable because not everyone is perfect and heroes acknowledge that themselves, no matter how much
they are idolized. Examples of heroes are your parents, other relatives, people in the military,
firefighters, policemen, musicians, characters, and authors. They are everywhere in your daily life if

Monetary Policies And Monetary Policy
Monetary Policies (Introduction)
The objective of monetary policy is to reserve the worth of the money by keeping inflation low, stable
and predictable that lets Canadians be more confident about the spending and investment choices. It
reassures long term investment in Canada s economy as well as contributes to continuous job creation
and better the production. It helps improve living standard. Canada s monetary policy outline consists
of two key components working together and reinforcing each other: the inflation control target and
the flexible exchange rate. The inflation control target directs the decisions of the Bank regarding the
proper setting of the policy interest rate that maintains a stable price environment throughout the
medium term.
Influencing Short Term Interest Rates As to reach the inflation target, the banks have to make changes
in the policy rate by raising or lowering it. If inflation is beyond target, the banks will have to increase
the policy rate, this inspires institutions to increase interest rates on the loan and mortgages.
Discouraging borrowing and spending which enables upward pressure on price. If inflation is under
the goal, banks will lower the policy rate which would then encourage financial institutions to lower
interest rates on the loans and mortgages. This information shows how much banks are concerned
about inflation going higher or lower in terms of the goal. The key policy interest rates are when banks
expect to be used in

East Of Eden Weather Analysis
John Steinbeck has many characteristics that set him apart from other writers. Including his ability to
write many novels and all of them still be of high quality work. Perhaps one of his most notable traits
was his love for writing detailed descriptions of land and weather. The use of natural elements in East
of Eden, allow Steinbeck to emphasize motifs and themes throughout the novel. In the beginning of
East of Eden, Steinbeck can be found giving a detailed description of the two separate mountain
ranges that form the Salinas Valley. The eastern mountain range with it s wide range of magnificent
flowers is said by Steinbeck to be lovely, inviting and full of positive energy. These wonderful
mountains are known as the Gabilan Mountains. The range of western mountains is nothing like the
mountains of the east; The western mountain range is described a dark, dangerous and unfriendly

Many believe that Steinbeck describes the weather to foreshadow events. In chapter twenty five,
Steinbeck describes the winter weather as being gray, cold, and wet. Chapter twenty five is also when
Steinbeck informs the reader that the beloved Samuel Hamilton passed away (Steinbeck, 2002, p.309).
This is accurate foreshadowing because the gloomy weather is associated with sadness and sorrow
which is what everyone felt when Samuel Hamilton died. Another important event that weather
foreshadowed was when Abra arrived on the Trask place. Abra was a source of competition for the

The Art Of Peer Pressure Theme Analysis
Peer Pressure and Morals
Peer pressure. Bad decisions. Close calls. Consequences. In the reflective song The Art of Peer
Pressure , Kendrick Lamar details a day where he was under peer pressure, made bad decisions, had
close calls, and narrowly escaped the consequence of his actions. Lamar was with some friends
smoking blunts that ended up to be laced with PCP. The combination of the PCP and peer pressure
from his friends caused Lamar to agree to go along with his friends plan to rob a house. Throughout
the song The Art of Peer Pressure , Kendrick Lamar creates a moralistically conflicted voice with a
combination of diction choices, imagery and syntax choices. The story of how Lamar was with some
friends and being with those friends influenced him to rob a house with them something he would not

would not turn out well for him and used the more conversational word karma instead of the word

karma is often used when speaking about morals and has a contrast in elevation with the word being

Our body system is not immune to pathological deficiencies. There exist numerous identified
pathologies which compromise the regular functioning of a heart, but all heart related pathologies are
narrowed to a single condition known as Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). This is the term formally
used in reference to the different identified clinical entities threatening the cardiovascular system. ACS
is the result of the progressive or complete sudden blocking of the arteries or veins; this prevents an

Today, suggested treatments depend on patients health and type of ACS condition. Such treatments
range from invasive surgery for high risk patients to prescribed medications for low risk patients. The
medications vary in function and purpose. For example, thrombosis is the fast forming of an abnormal
blood clot in an artery or vein. Therefore, it must be treated with a fast acting anticoagulant which
could be Heparin or Fondaparinux (Hyers, 2005). Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heartbeat and is
frequently treated with another type of anticoagulant, Warfarin. Finally, unstable angina is a chest
discomfort caused by the lack of blood flow through the heart and in most cases is treated with the
most common antiplatelet medication, Aspirin.
Anticoagulants are given to prevent blood from clotting or prevent an existing clot from more
growing. In contrast, antiplatelets are only given to prevent blood from clotting. Beside the advantages
each treatment gives patients, none treatment

Hyperkalemia is an Imbaland of Serum Potassium
Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte imbalance characterized by elevated serum potassium.
Hyperkalemia is defined as serum potassium concentrations greater than 5.5 mmol/L (normal range is
3.5 to 5.0 mmol/L). In the body, ninety eight percent of potassium is intracellular, and the 2 % left is
extracellular which is needed for nerve conduction and muscle contraction. For this reason,
extracellular potassium concentration is tightly regulated through renal potassium excretion. Up to
90% of dietary intake of potassium is excreted by the kidney. As kidney function declines, the kidney
compensates and aldosterone levels increase in order to boost potassium excretion. However,
compensatory mechanisms may become overwhelmed, and result in hyperkalemia (Raymond Wazny,
2010). Potassium plays an important role in nerve and muscle function. As a result of this role,
abnormalities in serum potassium may trigger membrane excitability and considerable nerve, muscle
and cardiac dysfunction leading to ventricular arrhythmias and subsequently sudden cardiac death. It
is estimated that between 1% and 10% of patients admitted to a hospital experience hyperkalemia,
with a mortality rate of 1 per 1,000 (Raymond Wazny,2010).
Causes of Hyperkalemia Many causes of hyperkalemia are seen in clinical practice. The most typical
causes are: renal disease, and also the consumption of medications that predispose the patient to
hyperkalemia (Parham, W.; Mehdirad,

The Double Minority in Song of Solomon Essay
Typically minority groups are thought of in the context of race; however, a minority group can also
consist of gender and class. The struggles facing a minority group complicate further when these
different facets of minority categories are combined into what is sometimes called a double minority.
Throughout their writing, African American women have exposed how being a double minority
changes the conditions of being a minority. In Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon, the African
American female characters demonstrate the impact of having a double minority status.
The female characters in Song of Solomon exhibit the difficulties for double minorities. Macon Dead
and his family are a prominent, middle class African American family. ... Show more content on

However, because she lacks drive, First Corinthians waits for the job and husband to be handed to her.
At the age of forty two, she realizes that her hopes of getting married are slim, so she decides to seek
employment. Despite her education, she does not have the proper qualifications for a teaching job.
Consequently, First Corinthians becomes a maid, which she hides from her family. Also, she hides her
education from her employer as described in these lines:
Corinthians was naïve, but she was not a complete fool. She never let her mistress know she had ever
been to college or Europe or could recognize one word of French that Miss Graham had not taught her
(entrez, for example). p.190
Although Corinthians obtained an education, she still ends up working as a maid. Even more
interestingly, Corinthians hides her education to keep her job. This job as a maid fringes on
Corinthians taking a step back into a form of slavery by being a servant. However, Corinthians finds
freedom in her servitude as demonstrated in the following:
Actually, the work Corinthians did was good for her. In that house she had what she never had in her
own: responsibility. She flourished in a way, and exchanged arrogance occasionally for confidence.
p.190
Before Corinthians obtains her job as a maid, she seems to be segregated from her community. Her
education and her families money appear to make her unattainable to the

An Eco Friendly Architecture, H E C. E B At Muller And The...
Nowadays, sustainability has been taken more into consideration for contemporary designs as it means
people need to leave enough resources for future generation while they are consuming for their own
needs which requires people to keep a balanced relationship with natural environment when they have
their own plannings(van de Kerk and Manuel as cited in Bender, H., Judith, K. Beilin, R, 2012). That
is, some designs are well considered and constructed in order to achieve sustainability in many ways,
such as reducing energy consumption, having less impact to the environment and starting to repay to
nature. This essay will use the examples of an eco friendly architecture, H E B at Muller and the city
planning of Melbourne to illustrate how urban designs can contribute to sustainability.
Some architectures are designed to consume resources more efficiently aiming not to exceed the
availability for satisfying future generation needs and continuing a balanced ecosystem. It seems that
renewable energy is being used in some architectures in order to achieve the low consumption of
resource. This is one attempt for human to try to make the buildings sustainable and ecofriendly,
because it is can be noticed that the buildings may consume materials, energy and functioning the
buildings needs to use energy as well(Cordero, 1992). It has been found that buildings did have an
impact on the environment such as generating greenhouse gas emission(Cordero, 1992). Thus, in

Midbrain And Epilepsychology
An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human brain is crucial with interpreting
epilepsy and its relation to the methods of diagnosis and treatment. There are three major divisions in
the brain: this includes the hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain. The hindbrain consists of the medulla
and the cerebellum. The medulla regulates the automatic bodily functions such as blood circulation,
heartbeat, and respiration. The cerebellum has to do with fine body movements and muscular
coordination. The midbrain contains the Reticular Activation System. This works with arousal, lower
level auditory and eye movements. The forebrain contains the hypothalamus, which has to work with
the feelings for hunger and thirst, and the cerebral cortex. The ... Show more content on

The frontal lobe is used for controlling functions such as thinking, memory, ex cetera. The occipital
lobe s primary function is vision. Parietal lobe is used for touch, temperature and pain perception.
Lastly, the temporal lobe works as the auditory system, also recognized as hearing. Each lobe may
contain its own type of epilepsy. For example, the frontal lobes epilepsy is known as recurring
seizures. This can cause a dramatic effect on the patient with their lifestyle. It is brief and occurs
mainly at night. The occipital is also known as recurring seizures but in only the occipital lobe. These
forms of seizures are rare. The parietal lobes type of epilepsy are recurring seizures beginning in the
parietal lobe. This is also known as the association cortex because it needs to communicate for the
brains functions. These types of seizures are rare as well. The last example would be temporal lobe
epilepsy. This is recurring seizures in the temporal lobe both sides of the head by the temples and
cheekbones. These seizures in this lobe are more common than others. Temporal lobe epilepsy can be
categorized as simple or complex partial

The London Blitz Essay In September of 1940 through May of 1941 there was a strategic bombing attack that was lead by the Germans targeted towards London and other cities located in England, this was known as The Blitz. The Germans aimed the bombs mostly at populated cities, dock yards, and factories. The bombing on London began on September 7, 1940 and lasted for 57 consecutive nights. • 5. Chinese Expansion To Africa Essay Summary: Chinese financial injections have been supporting economies of many African countries in recent years. Chinese business enterprises created new working positions, helped to improve infrastructure, brought new technologies and also cheap products which could African people afford more then the ones exported from Europe or USA. However, later it appeared that China s increasing influence doesn t lead African countries only to prosperity and better life but started to cause problems. Nowadays, there are many questions whether Chinese expansion to Africa has positive or negative impact, especially in terms of respecting human and worker s rights, environmental issues, protection of local labor markets and constantly blooming ... That s the main difference between China s and other countries development aid. The help to Africa should be based on effort which would change the system in most of the countries and in this case money is just small instrument, there needs to be somebody who would really care and observe the situation. However, in case of China, apparently the most important drive force is a possible benefit. Another problem connected with Chinese presence in Africa is the environmental protection. Comparison of Investors in Africa Chinese investments in Africa are usually concentrated in industry areas which are environmentally very sensitive; such as mining, oil exploration, infrastructure projects etc. China wants to make previously inaccessible resources accessible but this strategy has serious environmental risks because of developing projects in ecologically fragile regions and in protected territories and in countries with weak governance ... • 6. Apologetic Artice Review The following article was written by David Wheeler for publication in an apologetics encyclopedia. However, the subject matter of the article is equally as important in the realm of evangelism. Considering that most approaches to evangelism, including Share Jesus Without Fear, are basically driven by supplying proper information , at what point does one s incarnational lifestyle enter into the equation? Is evangelism only the communication of proper information, or does it also include the total person in reference to one s outward behavior that validates the information to the world? Is it both information and incarnation ? Read and respond on discussion board. Subject: Incarnational Apologetics Definition: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The same argument can be applied to other areas of traditional apologetics. Consider for a moment the important issues related to the resurrection of Christ. While the historical and biblical aspects are imperative in validating the authenticity of the event, one must never ignore how that miraculous event transforms the individual expressions of a Christian s daily life. For instance, a Muslim friend who converted to Christianity communicated that it was not the great arguments of traditional informational apologetics that finally drew him to examine the claims of Christ. On the contrary, it was the consistent caring actions of a high school friend who lived out a resurrected life before him. It was not that his friend ever stopped verbally sharing the informational truths about Christ with him. The truth is that he boldly shared the gospel on many occasions. The bottom line was the simple undeniable fact that his friend s life incarnationally validated the biblical truths he graciously espoused. In fact, the former Muslim admitted that he regularly abused and embarrassed his schoolmate hoping that he would grow weary and leave him alone. In the end, the former Muslim became a Christian because he could not argue with the evidences of a transformed life that ultimately became a tool of the Holy Spirit prompting his heart to further examine the directions of his faith. It is here that both the incarnational and informational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eve makes the choice to sacrifice self identity to care for her mentally ill husband Pierre. In the beginning of the book The Wall and Other Stories Sartre invites us to interpret the text from an existentialist point of view. So we must understand Sartre philosophical meaning of life. What is the meaning of life? Jean Paul Sartre defines life as first accepting our own faults and strengths, to then understand that the world exists regardless of our actions, and it is only when we actively participate and take responsibility for our place in the world do we honestly experience life. For Sartre, the moment Eve decides she will kill Pierre , when his mind is lost to his dementia, is the most sane thing Eve does. She has been faced with a truth, Pierre is in sane without any possibility for recovery, and she takes that moment and makes a choice to end his suffering and hers. She is not hiding from the choice and is taking responsibility for that action. Hence in sanity is Pierre s life and self identity, but Eve has another identity to explore. Eve can t merely state I am the wife of a mentally ill husband, but I am Eve now what am I going to do. What I am I to do with this external force and mend it with a choice of action? This is also why for Sartre close relationships are doomed to failure. In order for love, friendship to occur your desire to please the other will undoubtedly cause a friction with your inner self. At some point you must deny your desire for the other, or deny your humanity. Also the object in life, your choice, and the others choice must be mended harmoniously. In an event known as the cloudburst , a whole society has their personal information revealed. Due to the horrors of having no privacy, the people went into hiding for protection. Since the leaks of information came from using advanced technology, the people also decided to no longer use this type of material. One of the side effects of technology is how all information is eventually scrambled and means something incredibly different than the original idea. Comparatively, Telephone , a popular children s game, is where a child makes up a sentence and the sentence is passed by word of mouth in a circle. Once the sentence is back to the beginning, the children often laugh at how different the sentence is from the original. This is exactly what the advanced technology does. In the process of trying to understand the original message, advanced technology can make everything out to be a lot worse than it actually is. What once was an inspiring story about how to grow a vegetable can turn into a story about animal rights. • 9. Social Relations Between Economic Organizations And The... 1.1 Introduction. From what process(es) does the code, the simulacrum, the object as a sign, emerge? According to Baudrillard, Symbolic Exchange is a form of exchange which both maintains and organizes divergent social relations and hierarchies [1]. The difference between Symbolic Exchange and other types of exchange, is that the value of an exchanged object does not value the act of exchanging it [1]. Fascination surrounding the dynamics of production, distribution, and consumption have been focal points in the dialogue of politics since Plato s archetypal philosophies [2]. New life was delivered into these issues in the modern world, through stringent analysis and critique by Karl Marx, within his exploration regarding the relationship between economic organizations and the distribution between power in society. Although, in spite of Marx s prediction regarding capitalism s looming collapse [3], capitalism continues to expand [4]. Jean Baudrillard s concept of Symbolic Exchange portrays a formidable role in comprehending why Karl Marx s prediction in regards to the disintegration of Capitalism has not come to fruition. Baudrillard adds to the preexisting Marxian notion of use value and exchange value proposing that, in contemporary consumer orientated society, various commodities inhibit a symbolic value which comprises their status , and thus, their power [1]. 1.2 Simulacrum, Simulation, and Sign. Thank You For Arguing Summary In section 4 of Thank You For Arguing by Jay Heinrichs, Heinrichs starts out by explaining Cicero s five canons of persuasion that include: invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Invention is the start of the persuasion and the thought of what is wanted to be accomplished. Then, the issue itself needs to be figured out and resolved. Finally, the person needs to think about the audience and what their values are. That will get an individual a start on the art of persuasion. Arrangement is how a person is going to arrange an argument so the persuasion is the most impactful. Arrangement comes down to this rule of thumb Ethos first. Then logos. Then pathos. (283). Heinrichs also explains the style of clarity, which is speaking to make the words obvious and straight facts. Also, Memory is used to create an image in the audience s minds to make them feel and imagine what the individual is talking about to persuade the audience more impactfully. Finally, the fifth canon of persuasion is delivery and how the person uses body language, along with your voice, rhythms, and breathing (290). Voice is key in delivery especially in the volume of the voice and how the audience emphasises the tone of the speaker. Towards the end of the novel, Heinrichs reiterates on a few keywords including: goals, ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos. Heinrichs also states examples of situations when these tools are needed. All Quiet On The Western Front Film Analysis The three films we were assigned to watch this unit were different in so many ways; Mutiny on the Bounty recounted the 1789 rebellion against William Bligh aboard the HMAV Bounty, It Happened One Night told the somewhat cliche story of a wealthy woman falling for a white collar reporter, and All Quiet on the Western Front illustrated the nature of World War 1 and its effects on those involved. Each film was not similar in plot to any other, yet each one falls on the list of the Greatest Films of All Time. I think the greatness of All Quiet on the Western Front lies in the fact that the story told a different kind of war story; instead of glorifying war and painting the characters out to be heroes, the audience was given a sad story where those ... They are the characters children look up to in our present society. But are these really heroes? Do we need someone else to look up to? What makes a hero a hero? Les Miserables is an exceptional film and is a very good example of the hero narrative. The film follows the lives of a group of characters from 1815 to the Paris Uprising of 1832. Some people would say that a hero for our time implies the hero needs to have lived within the past 20 years to be for our time and to understand what is happening in our world. According to those people Les Miserables would not fit their criteria due to it being set in 1815 32. • 20. Analysis Of George Orwell s The Elephant George Orwell began the essay with his perspective on British domination. He stated that it is evil and alongside of that it is oppressive. He felt hatred and guilt toward himself and the Burmese people. The people of Burma did not feel threatened because the narrator of the story had killed the elephant. The Burmese people have lost their dignity and integrity while trying to fight off the British imperialism. Orwell uses allegories to describe his experience of the British imperialism and he had his own view of the matter of slaying the elephant. He successfully used ethos, pathos, and logos by attracting the audience to read his story. He had to make a scene in the story to make the people of Burma feel the same emotion. The elephant was the one reason why it makes this story emotional. He used logos to show that he can kill the elephant even if he does not want to so that it does not make him look fool. Logos is used to show logic and persuade an audience by reason. When the author talks about the irony and the reality of imperialism, he compares himself to the figure of a sahib. The comparison to the sahib is a term that was used to name aristocratic rulers. It is an important symbol of their cultural image. British imperialism is a hostile environment and does not justify exploitation by controlling the Burmese people. The story sets the tone of the author s story to be un comforting. • 24. Northern Mesopotamia And. Cahokia And Monte Alban Small communities in southern Mesopotamia evolved to one of the earliest states due to environmental changes that occurred between the Ubaid and Uruk periods. These environmental changes such as the creation of Arabo Persian Gulf increased population in certain regions, which in turn increased competition, warfare, and optimal settings for trade. All this lead to some of the earliest states being formed in Southern Mesopotamia. Cahokia and Monte Alban are two examples of primary states that were formed in Mesoamerica due to their competition level. Monte Alban used strategic warfare tactics to get control over regions that were rich in resources in order to do create a sustainable state. On the other hand because of Cahokia s lack of control over distant regions, their state destructed in a very short time period, concluding that competition was the main reason for early state formation. In the later years of Northern Mesopotamia civilization, the climate changed dramatically causing the collapse of several states in the region. Volcano eruptions, increased degree of dryness, and other changes in the climate destroyed the agriculture in the area causing people to relocate to other states. How Does The Crucifixion In The Dream Of The Rood In The Dream of the Rood, an Anglo Saxon poem written in the early Middle Ages, Christ s death and burial is described in a manner which is startlingly different from the original biblical accounts. In order to highlight the important victory of the crucifixion, the poet of The Dream of the Rood describes Christ as an aggressive warrior who boldly confronts and defeats sin. This description is constant with the honor and courage so highly valued in the early medieval culture. The words used to describe Christ s approach to the crucifixion in The Dream of the Rood reveal the poet s conscious choice to portray Jesus as a purposeful courageous warrior: Then the young hero (who was God Almighty) Got ready, resolute and strong in heart. ...the warrior embraced [the cross]. • 29. An Internship Is A Professional Program Introduction In the recent years employers are more interested in hiring new workers with a handful of experience in their field rather than their qualifications. An internship is a professional program that provides practical experiences to students in which they learn and can reflect back on for their future careers. Internships are increasingly becoming more evident in the work force as it helps give employers an opportunity to find good quality employees and in return provides good experience for the intern. Participating in internships, no matter paid or unpaid, is believed to strengthen the probability of acquiring a top notch career in the competitive market. However, the difference between paid and unpaid interns can dramatically change that window of opportunity for those seeking to engage in it. As unemployment rates continue to rise, the competition for internship increases. A large part of the demand market includes newly graduated students who just finished a high educational degree in hopes to outshine their peers who are pursuing the same job. A significant amount of these young people are willingly taking on unpaid internships with the risk of them being unable to sustain their financial need. This ultimately hinders them from climbing up the social ladder (DiMaria, 2013). In chapter 5 of Niebuhr s Moral Man and Immoral Society, Niebuhr examines the attitudes of privileged classes as a group. Niebuhr is correct in his argument that the economic standing of a group determines their ethical and social outlook. His argument that a group formed from similar economic conditions will share similar perspectives of society is supported by the observations by Gilkey, Nerburn, Plato and Kotlowitz. This idea is also seen in Neither Wolf nor Dog by Kent Nerburn when Dan, a native American, discusses the colonization of America. Dan criticizes the dominant white class and how they suppressed the Native American culture. He explains that [y]ou killed us by turning our land into a piece of paper and bags of flour and blankets and telling us that was enough (Nerburn 50). The taking of their land and oppression of Native Americans and their culture was morally justified with the exchange of land for food and household items. These exchanges allowed the privileged class, white people, to justify the oppression that was taking place since they convinced themselves that they had made a fair trade. The poem is a son s plea to his dying father. Thomas shows four different kinds of people in four stanzas wise men, good men, wild men and grave men so as to encourage his father to fight against death rather than to accept in silence. The tone used in the poem is passionate and intense. Rage, rage against the dying of the light (line 3) is an attitude the old is supposed to hold. Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. (line 17) In this sentence, curse , bless , fierce and tears all have the rhyme s which makes the tone soft sounding. Thomas begs his father to die with anger, not humility. Whatever the ways, the curse or bless, the poet can bear it so long as his father not surrender to death. During World War I, the Espionage Act of 1917 was used to jail prominent critics of American intervention in the war among them, Eugene V. Debs, four time presidential candidate (Ball, 146). Shortly after the war ended, A. Mitchell Palmer used the powers granted by the act to conduct mass arrests and deportation of hundreds of foreign residents (Emert, 54, 55, 56). During World War II, the federal government forcibly relocated thousands of Japanese Americans into what were essentially concentration camps (Cooper, 10, 11). The Japanese internment was implemented in the name of combating a virtually non existent military threat, for fear that Americans of Japanese descent might aid the Empire of Japan (Cooper, 63). After the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon and the declaration of the War on Terror, the USA PATRIOT Act was hurriedly conceived and passed into law (Ball, 38). Monetary Policies And Monetary Policy Monetary Policies (Introduction) The objective of monetary policy is to reserve the worth of the money by keeping inflation low, stable and predictable that lets Canadians be more confident about the spending and investment choices. It reassures long term investment in Canada s economy as well as contributes to continuous job creation and better the production. It helps improve living standard. Canada s monetary policy outline consists of two key components working together and reinforcing each other: the inflation control target and the flexible exchange rate. The inflation control target directs the decisions of the Bank regarding the proper setting of the policy interest rate that maintains a stable price environment throughout the medium term. Influencing Short Term Interest Rates As to reach the inflation target, the banks have to make changes in the policy rate by raising or lowering it. If inflation is beyond target, the banks will have to increase the policy rate, this inspires institutions to increase interest rates on the loan and mortgages. Discouraging borrowing and spending which enables upward pressure on price. If inflation is under the goal, banks will lower the policy rate which would then encourage financial institutions to lower interest rates on the loans and mortgages. • 44. Hyperkalemia is an Imbaland of Serum Potassium Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte imbalance characterized by elevated serum potassium. Hyperkalemia is defined as serum potassium concentrations greater than 5.5 mmol/L (normal range is 3.5 to 5.0 mmol/L). In the body, ninety eight percent of potassium is intracellular, and the 2 % left is extracellular which is needed for nerve conduction and muscle contraction. For this reason, extracellular potassium concentration is tightly regulated through renal potassium excretion. Up to 90% of dietary intake of potassium is excreted by the kidney. As kidney function declines, the kidney compensates and aldosterone levels increase in order to boost potassium excretion. However, compensatory mechanisms may become overwhelmed, and result in hyperkalemia (Raymond Wazny, 2010). Potassium plays an important role in nerve and muscle function. As a result of this role, abnormalities in serum potassium may trigger membrane excitability and considerable nerve, muscle and cardiac dysfunction leading to ventricular arrhythmias and subsequently sudden cardiac death. It is estimated that between 1% and 10% of patients admitted to a hospital experience hyperkalemia, with a mortality rate of 1 per 1,000 (Raymond Wazny,2010). Causes of Hyperkalemia Many causes of hyperkalemia are seen in clinical practice. The most typical causes are: renal disease, and also the consumption of medications that predispose the patient to hyperkalemia (Parham, W.; Mehdirad, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Double Minority in Song of Solomon Essay Typically minority groups are thought of in the context of race; however, a minority group can also consist of gender and class. The struggles facing a minority group complicate further when these different facets of minority categories are combined into what is sometimes called a double minority. Throughout their writing, African American women have exposed how being a double minority changes the conditions of being a minority. In Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon, the African American female characters demonstrate the impact of having a double minority status. The female characters in Song of Solomon exhibit the difficulties for double minorities. Macon Dead and his family are a prominent, middle class African American family. ... At the age of forty two, she realizes that her hopes of getting married are slim, so she decides to seek employment. Despite her education, she does not have the proper qualifications for a teaching job. Consequently, First Corinthians becomes a maid, which she hides from her family. Also, she hides her education from her employer as described in these lines: Corinthians was naïve, but she was not a complete fool. She never let her mistress know she had ever been to college or Europe or could recognize one word of French that Miss Graham had not taught her (entrez, for example). p.190 Although Corinthians obtained an education, she still ends up working as a maid. Even more interestingly, Corinthians hides her education to keep her job. This job as a maid fringes on Corinthians taking a step back into a form of slavery by being a servant. However, Corinthians finds freedom in her servitude as demonstrated in the following: Actually, the work Corinthians did was good for her. In that house she had what she never had in her own: responsibility. She flourished in a way, and exchanged arrogance occasionally for confidence. p.190 Before Corinthians obtains her job as a maid, she seems to be segregated from her community. Her education and her families money appear to make her unattainable to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. An Eco Friendly Architecture, H E C. E B At Muller And The... Nowadays, sustainability has been taken more into consideration for contemporary designs as it means people need to leave enough resources for future generation while they are consuming for their own needs which requires people to keep a balanced relationship with natural environment when they have their own plannings(van de Kerk and Manuel as cited in Bender, H., Judith, K. Beilin, R, 2012). That is, some designs are well considered and constructed in order to achieve sustainability in many ways, such as reducing energy consumption, having less impact to the environment and starting to repay to nature. This essay will use the examples of an eco friendly architecture, H E B at Muller and the city planning of Melbourne to illustrate how urban designs can contribute to sustainability. Some architectures are designed to consume resources more efficiently aiming not to exceed the availability for satisfying future generation needs and continuing a balanced ecosystem. It seems that renewable energy is being used in some architectures in order to achieve the low consumption of resource. This is one attempt for human to try to make the buildings sustainable and ecofriendly, because it is can be noticed that the buildings may consume materials, energy and functioning the buildings needs to use energy as well(Cordero, 1992). It has been found that buildings did have an impact on the environment such as generating greenhouse gas emission(Cordero, 1992). Thus, in order to reduce the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Midbrain And Epilepsychology An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human brain is crucial with interpreting epilepsy and its relation to the methods of diagnosis and treatment. There are three major divisions in the brain: this includes the hindbrain, midbrain and forebrain. The hindbrain consists of the medulla and the cerebellum. The medulla regulates the automatic bodily functions such as blood circulation, heartbeat, and respiration. The cerebellum has to do with fine body movements and muscular coordination. The midbrain contains the Reticular Activation System. This works with arousal, lower level auditory and eye movements. The forebrain contains the hypothalamus, which has to work with the feelings for hunger and thirst, and the cerebral cortex. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The frontal lobe is used for controlling functions such as thinking, memory, ex cetera. The occipital lobe s primary function is vision. Parietal lobe is used for touch, temperature and pain perception. Lastly, the temporal lobe works as the auditory system, also recognized as hearing. Each lobe may contain its own type of epilepsy. For example, the frontal lobes epilepsy is known as recurring seizures. This can cause a dramatic effect on the patient with their lifestyle. It is brief and occurs mainly at night. The occipital is also known as recurring seizures but in only the occipital lobe. These forms of seizures are rare. The parietal lobes type of epilepsy are recurring seizures beginning in the parietal lobe. This is also known as the association cortex because it needs to communicate for the brains functions. These types of seizures are rare as well. The last example would be temporal lobe epilepsy. This is recurring seizures in the temporal lobe both sides of the head by the temples and cheekbones. These seizures in this lobe are more common than others. Temporal lobe epilepsy can be categorized as simple or complex partial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
