Rubbish Can Be Sayd To Have Value In A Consumer Society
Outline the ways in which rubbish can be said to have value in a consumer society.
A consumer society is increasingly organized around consumption of goods and leisure, rather than
the production of materials and services. It rests on consuming material goods as a supreme
characteristic of value. Therefore individuals who do not consume are viewed as undervalued. Peoples
consumer choices (taste and style) are seen to be indicators of who they are as a person and of their
moves within the games of class, prestige, status, hierarchy, fashionability ( Features of a Consumer
Society McGregor 2011). Many spending and investments are committed to consuming, regardless of
whether it is good for the environment and health, for example the ... Show more content on

Up to now the focus is on the idea that rubbish doesn t have value. That is, rubbish has no value to the
person who throws it away. ( Rubbish Society , 2009 p.118).It might still have negative value, in that
disposing of it money and costs time. For example if a person has to take any of his household items
for disposal then it will have negative value for him, considering transportation costs and the
consumed time
But rubbish can potentially have value for others. As the old saying goes: One man s junk is another
man s treasure .(Unknown). This is essential for defining how come there are businesses of rubbish.
Rubbish allows them to make money by disposing it off in proper manner. These businesses turn
rubbish into something of value. They make this possible by converting it into marketable products or
by moving it away for dumping. ( Rubbish Society , 2009 p.119). The growth in the recycling industry
and people s increased awareness and participation in recycling programs all over the world has also
created an opening for larger organizations to operate recycling and disposal operations on an
international level. The process of recycling can thus give value to rubbish and waste by producing
outputs

Aristophanes’ Clouds a Satyr Play Written in 419 BCE
Aristophanes Clouds, if read hastily, can be interpreted as a mindless satyr play written in 419 BCE.
Yet the chorus warns the reader not to expect the play to have farcical ploys like a hanging phallus
stitched on the actors to evoke a laugh, but to take note of underlying seriousness as she [the play]
comes in trusting only her words (Clouds 538 44). Even if the play does use some low devices, the
play s message is sophisticated and can be read as a warning to Socrates. Aristophanes is a friendly
critic of Socrates and warns Socrates to change his ways for Athens and for the good of himself
(Whidden). Plato s Symposium and especially his Apology of Socrates does not discount the claims
made in Clouds about the dangers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates counters Meletus s weaker claim by asserting that he believes in Diamonic matters, so then
there is also a great necessity that I [Socrates] believe in diamonia (Apology 27c). Diamons are not
exactly defined. Scholars have debated this point, and one interpretation would be that they seem to be
a being half divine and half human (Apology footnote 37). Socrates uses them as an example of gods
that he believes in, but he refers to them as a separate entity later in this same speech. They are
referred to as a voice that Socrates hears, not unlike a conscience, that turns me [Socrates] away from
whatever I am about to do, but never turns me forward (Apology 31d). Socrates uses that as the reason
why he never got into politics, as the majority rule is usually against his own code of morals (31d).
Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of prisoners without
trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed (32d). Socrates may
have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the charge that he corrupts
the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Athenians acted out of fear of heavenly
retribution, not morals (Whidden). Those youth found it acceptable to do whatever they wanted
because of the apparent lack of gods and thunderbolts coming down from the heavens to smite those
who deserve justice. Clouds Socrates argues, If in fact he

The Night Watches Of The Buddha
Question 2 Analyze the night Watches of the Buddha, and explain how the content was developed in
the Mahayana Sutras. Mahayana Buddhism is originated in the first century C.E. and focuses on new
concern for liberation through the assistance of a bodhisattva (Voorst ). Also, Mahayana Buddhism
requires a body of scripture, and so began the Mahayana Canon (Voorst ). Mahayana Sutras is one of
section of the Mahayana Canon, which focuses on the denial of the reality of existence and
nonexistence in philosophical discussion (VOORST ). In the content of night Watches, it was
developed in Mahayana Sutras and Night of Watches explains how Siddhartha Buddha reached
Nirvana. This research examines the Watches of the nights and analyzes how it is developed in the
Mahayana Sutras. While the first watch of the night, Siddhartha Gautama s mind was supreme calm ,
clear and purified when the light was raised in him as well as knowledge and insight raised. He saw
continuous series of all his former births and even he saw more than hundred and thousands of his
previous life (VOORST ). Therefore, he stated that there too I had such a name, belonged to such a
clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure pain, and such the
end of my life. Passing away from that state, I re arose here (Bhikkhu ). Thus he realized that he

How Sportsmanship Can Be A Part Of A Team
All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult to select a group
of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3) respect their coaches. The
formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always exists to drag the team down,
to deflate their motives, and increase their egos; but that does not have any effect on the sportsmanship
of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a team. It does not correlate with how
many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of friends are on the team. It is not entirely
internal or entirely external. Sportsmanship is not simply the willingness of an athlete to respect other
teams; it is an athlete s ability to respect their own team and, most importantly, his or her self.
Sportsmanship is innate, reflecting an athlete s character. Neither winning nor losing can change it.
Over the years, I have joined a multitude of teams. Ballet in preschool. Followed by basketball in
kindergarten. Gymnastics. Softball. Soccer. I tried them all. However, volleyball as the only one to
stick. I started in third grade with big, bulky knee pads and cute hair bows, and ceased playing during
my sophomore year with strong, bulky thighs and years of floor burn scars. I had been contemplating
my departure from the one sport I ever truly played for months. Something was missing. I did not love
it, but I could not find it in myself to hate it.

Harriet Jacobs Thesis
Harriet Jacobs was an African American slave that left an impact on several people in ending slavery.
Not just on how slavery was, but especially how it was for the women. She wrote a autobiography on
her time in slavery to address the white women in the North who do not fully comprehend the evils of
slavery. She makes direct appeals to their humanity to expand their knowledge and influence their
thouhts about slavery as a institution. This autobiography was published in a newspaper in the North
and was part of the beginnings on ending slavery. Her autobiography is telling of her time during the
years of service at the Flint houseold. She was young when she first started to work for them. And
during her early years she was able to participate in the activites the master s children did. But when
she turned fifteen things took a sad turn. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Flint was a nasty, vile, and disgusting old man. He was not faithful to his wife and thought of Harriet
as his property to do whatever he liked to. Harriet had once said that beauty was a curse for a slave
girl, meaning that if a slave girl had the misfortune of beauty, her master would desire her. He would
whisper vile things into Harriets ear. So many impure things that she could not bring herself to say in
her auotbiography. She would try to object to his cruelity but he would always demand her service
seeing as how he was her master. And, growing up knowing that she was to obey her master, she didn
t have much of a fight. Dr. Flint not only abused Harriet, but threatened her with her life if she did not
keep quiet about all he had done. She, herself, felt dirty, and tainted. Like the life and joy she had once
experinced as a child had vanished, and was replaced with a dull, gray, world of emptyness. Even
other slaves began to notice her sadness. They understood, especially the women, exactly what she
was going through. No one was to talk about it, knowing that if they did, punishment was quick to

The Stonewall Rebellion Or Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Rebellion or Stonewall Riots was a series of violent riots that took place between gay
and trans activists, drag queens, and other patrons of The Stonewall Inn against the police after a raid
had been carried out by the Sixth Precinct police. The days and rebellions that followed are
monumental moments in LGBT and World history.
For New York s gay and trans communities the 1960 s marks a turning point in their history; Sodomy
had been reduced to a misdemeanour, with a maximum sentence of six months in prison, the anti gay
accommodation rules of the New York State Liquor Authority had been overturned, allowing
homosexuals to congregate and be served alcoholic beverages in bars, The American Psychiatric
Association reclassified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, it became a nightly home to homeless youth and runaways, drag queens, people of
colour, and other minorities who were often not accepted in gay spaces. Among its patrons was
African American, Trans, Gay, and AIDS activist, sex worker, and drag queen Martha P. Johnson.
Who would famously claim that the P. stood for Pay it No Mind .
The Stonewall Inn had been registered as a private Bottle Bar which meant patrons were expected to
bring their own liquor. The Genovese Family would often bribe the Sixth Precinct to turn a blind eye
to the activities occurring in inn. However, in the early hours of June 28th 1969 and readied with a
warrant for storing and selling liquor without a licence; the police prepared to raid The Stonewall Inn.
The raid began just after 3a.m, and the police found the illegal liquor and began arresting employees
while the crowd booed but remained otherwise calm. Howard Smith, a village voice reporter who
stayed with the police throughout the riot reported During the gay power riots at the Stonewall last
Friday night I found myself on what seemed to me the wrong side of the blue line. Very scary. Very
enlightening. After arresting some of the employees, including the bartender, doorman, and reportedly
brutalising some of the patrons. The police turned their focus on those suspected in violation of New
York s gender appropriate laws; They had checked 5 persons suspected of

How Is Black Swan Psychoanalysis Criticism
Perfection is not just about control, but also letting go. Psychoanalysis in literary criticisms is a
criticism that is an idea of an unconscious area within the human mind. It emphasized the role of
unconscious in determining human behavior. In here, childhood experiences is very important.
Dreams are also important, in a way, that it is interpreted to know what is the message the unconscious
area wants the conscious one to know. Black Swan is an intense psychological thriller describing a
ballet dancer s metamorphosis into the Black Swan . Black Swan is about a ballet dancer who wins the
lead role of the swan queen that requires to dance as both the sweet white and evil black swans.

someone on the dark, and it looks like her. But when it came to the light, it was Lily. Another one is
when she had a dream that they are making love. But there are times that when she look at her, all she
can see is her face. I believe that Lily is the person Nina made. Remember that Lily is the exact

Physiological Adaptations Of An American Badger
Physiological Adaptations: * During periods of food shortages, badgers metabolism tend to decrease.
A study conducted by Harlow showed that their metabolism decreased partially because of reduced
energy required for food processing and a decrease in body weight. However, in times of food scarcity
they also increase the efficiency of ingested food. Structural Adaptations: * American badgers have

Informative Essay On Drag Racing Cars
The drivers and their teams do not just sit there and see who has the faster car and who will make it to
the finish line first. There is a lot of preparation, skill and strategies that are behind the process. The
team must prepare for a race regardless of the length by getting the engines running to the RPM and
efficiency needed to make sure the car is at maximum performance. They can not have errors when it
comes to race time because one mistake could cost them their car or pride. The types of tires and
functionality of clothing play a huge role in how a driver will perform in a race which inflicts how
films and music are perceived when it comes to racing cars. Tires come in different sizes and
functions. Some are better suited for everyday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Music that involves car racing is usually loud or has some time of motivational type. Films involves
loud car noises and screeching of the tires. Some one is always intense in both music and films of
racing cars. In Mark Braboys article it says that the films music has been consisting of predominantly
hip hop, R B, and heavy metal to incorporating reggaeton, EDM, and pop music as the series grew
with the times (Braboy, 14 Greatest Soundtrack Songs From the Fast Furious Franchise ). All the
music in these films have been able to pump someone up to watch car racing because it makes it more
intense and more excited to the audience. The films go along with the music and make it more
exciting to watch. There are many car racing films, but whomever the audience is determines what
he/she thinks when car racing comes to mind. Like Mike Guy says in his article, The fact of the matter
is, to a car guy, choosing a list of the ten best car movies of all time is sort of like a food fanatic trying
to rank their favorite all time meals (Guy, Top 10 Car Movies of All Time ). Some people might think
The Fast and the Furious series when they hear car racing, and some may think Death Race, Cars, or
Telladaga Nights. It all depends on who is listening and who the person is that determines the film.

Smooth Gap Definition
Two words: thigh gap. If you haven t heard of it, don t worry, that s probably because it doesn t exist
on more than half of the population. According to Wikipedia, a thigh gap is a space between the inner
thighs of some women when standing upright with knees touching. It s interesting how that one
sentence represents everything that is wrong with our society.
The idea of the thigh gap gained popularity in late 2012 after the annual Victoria s Secret Fashion
Show, which featured numerous models, all of which had thin thighs. Several twitter accounts, blogs,
and memes emerged all over the Internet and pictures of skinny thighs were spreading like wildfire on

And the public falls prey to their tactics time and again. Corporate organizations are finding gaps in
their market, and off late it s the health quotient that is being thrown into the spotlight. They come up
with so many products that offer benefits like slimming and toning in order to help us achieve our
dream appearance. Apart from the teas, pills and books, the service industry also feeds off our
insecurities. The annual revenue of the U.S. weight loss industry is 20 billion dollars, including diet

seemed like it was a metaphor for social acceptance and approval but now it seems to represent
something much more than that. It represents exploitation and profiteering. It shows how even a

Stalin s Death After World War II
After World War II, Berlin had been a constant problem area in East West relations. In 1948 49 Joseph
Stalin had tried to blockade the Western sectors into submission by closing off all the land routes into
the city, which were almost a hundred miles inside Soviet occupied territory. The West surprised him
with a successful airlift that kept West Berlin supplied with sufficient essentials to survive. However,
Stalin s death prevented a wall or something similar being constructed in 1953. In 1958, his successor,
the unpredictable Nikita Khrushchev, had started threatening West Berlin s status once more. The
Soviet leader compared the Allied occupied sectors to the West s testicles. If, he joked, he wanted to

Along with the separate and much longer Inner German border (IGB), which demarcated the border
between East and West Germany, it came to symbolize a physical marker of the Iron Curtain that
separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.
Most Germans experienced the building of the Wall as a devastating blow. It was not just a brutal act
in itself but also final proof, if proof were needed, that the reunification many still hoped for must
remain a distant, even an impossible, dream. There was genuine outrage in West Germany (and to
some extent in the East, though this was rapidly suppressed by the Communist secret police, the Stasi,
who carried out thousands of arrests). However, given the renewed dangers of conflict during the
previous few years, the building of the Wall, although it unleashed a brief East West showdown, was
seen from a global perspective not necessarily the catastrophe that it first appeared.
At the end of July 1961, the newly elected American President John F. Kennedy, had already ordered a
military build up to cope with possible Soviet and Warsaw Pact designs on Berlin (and by implication
West Germany). However, his actual response to the building of the Wall was downright muted.
Washington made it clear that only if the Soviets and their East German protégés tried

Example Of A Femme Fatale
A femme fatale, a French term for fatal woman (Schimkowitz, 2014), is a strong willed, manipulative
woman who is as alluring as she is dangerous. She is an irresistibly attractive woman who leads a man
into difficult and dangerous situations with her seductive charms (Blakely, 2014). They used to be
physically characterized as fierce sexing looking women with sharp eyeliners. This female archetype
has been in existence since ancient times all around the world.
The first example of a femme fatale in this paper is Veda Pierce (Ann Blyth) in Mildred Pierce, which
was released in 1945, when many American soldiers returned from World War II. During the WWII
period, women were the main providers for their families while American men were at war, which led
to increase independent American women. Mildred Pierce, the mother of Veda, is one of the strong
women who is working hard to support herself and her children. In contrast to her mother s effort,
Veda takes advantage of her mother s kindness and money. She also betrays her by having an affair
with Monte Beragon, who is already married to her mother. Veda has the looks and knows how to use
her looks to attract men. And she is so ambitious that she does anything in order to get the most
important thing to her which is money to live the high class life. Ultimately, a femme fatale leads the
male into ruin. Veda fulfills this characteristic of the femme fatale by shooting Monte to death when
he denies that he is going to marry her.

It s a small thing that could blow up into a major issue, but in some cases, it could be the way people
save feelings. The way of sometimes hurting someone s feelings and sometimes boosting their
confidence is the human form of somewhat lying. Lying is sometimes the right thing to do like lying
to children, being private about personal business, and by protecting someone s feeling. Children are
built on conspiracies and fantasies like Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and more.

This seems to me as if it is not so much of a new idea but rather continuing to expand on their success
in the services segment. Third is cloud and nextgeneration data center . The advent of cloud
computing could throttle demand for IBM s high end powerful hardware and software. Oracle and Sun
are attempting to compete with IBM on this new frontier. Naturally the management discussion in the
annual report and financial statements indicates that IBM believes this will be a great growth area for
IBM. However, it is not going to be without competition but IBM should be one of the beneficiaries if
cloud computing grows. The fourth and final growth opportunity IBM management outlines is called,

sound like a new idea to me but rather a catchy marketing name for increasing and capitalizing on

Southwest s Long Term Strategy
With the vision and purpose of existence, Southwest s long term strategy is to provide superior service
with low cost targeting point to point destinations. When compared with its competitors, Southwest s
business model leverages the operations, resources and strategies very efficiently to minimize costs.
The following are the few techniques/strategies which exemplify the success of Southwest s
operations. For over decades, Southwest chose small and midsize airports in big cities, where its
competition is relatively low. Using small airports is hassle free due to less traffic and congestion with
an access to major markets. This allowed the southwest to reduce its turnaround time when compared
to its competitors. This increased the aircraft utilization¬ by allowing aircraft to log more hours in the
air. This is quite opposite to the way the other major airlines operate. Yet, the southwest strategy gave
a competitive edge to gain market share and to achieve scale economies. Other airlines use hub and
spoke system (anywhere to everywhere system) where passengers from small markets (spokes) fly to
major airports (hubs) and then consolidate the passengers to long hauling flights. Challenging the
conventional practice of the airlines industry, Southwest adopted a point to point system where
services are catered to each origin to destination (i.e. a city pair) via nonstop flights (Gerald N. Cook,
2008). This reduces the travel time as there are no intermediate stops and

Oedipus Leadership Style Of Leadership
Throughout history, there has been numerous accounts of great leadership. Whether its political or
social leadership, each man or woman has his or her own unique set of characteristics that makes them
great. Frequently they leave a legacy which is observed meticulously in order to understand the traits
which corresponded to great leadership and its accomplishments. What is less often accounted for is
the failure a leader experience during their time lifetime. Failed leadership in history and literature
provides examples of how some of the greatest figure to ever exist become oblivious to the wake of
destruction that they leave behind. Odysseus, Oedipus and Hamlet each have a fatal task to
accomplish throughout their individual stories . While each man shows characteristics of wisdom,
critical thinking and hold some position of royalty, these traits are not enough to save them from the
destructive trail they leave behind.
Odysseus, a King favored by the goddess of war and wisdom faced a twenty year journey of war and
travel. This two decade journey of adventure came at the expense of crew and nearly his family. His
failed leadership stems from his hubris that overcomes him at times, particularly when he leaves the
island of the Cyclopes, Polyphemus. When Odysseus encounters Polyphemus, his crew becomes
trapped in his cave as they waited on their host to welcome them, a common Greek custom. When
they discover the beat didn t plan on showing any hospitality and instead begins

Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life
Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life
Donald J. Moore
Webster University

Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment,
one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all
plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God
instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a
function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished
through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas teachings proclaim that God created the
universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that
the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law.
A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The
doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also have
the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and if she
does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young woman take
the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be
capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus

Taking a Look at the Renaissance
Renaissance is a generally accepted name for the era of great change in culture, art, and architecture
which took place in the fifteenth and sixteenth century Italy, and then left its mark on the culture of the
whole of Europe. During the Renaissance there was a significant shift of universally recognized
values. They began to appreciate and recognize the creative possibilities of a human mind, which
entailed a lot of consequences. One of them was the spectacular development of the architecture, and
the new role of architecture and the architect in society. New forms of secular buildings such as villas,
palaces, houses and town halls were exemplified, but most of building activity was centered on sacred
buildings like the famed Tempietto by Donatano Bramante. Tempietto is a prime example of
Renaissance architecture because not only it represents key characteristics like the simplicity of the
composition, symmetry within structure, but it also resurrects precedents of Christian and pagan origin
which were a baseline for many designs during that period.
For many reasons the Renaissance began in Italy. In addition to the fact that there existed a rich artistic
tradition, Italy was the richest country in Europe at that time. Cities were in bloom, rich merchants and
bankers wanted to glorify their names ordering portraits, building magnificent palaces, decorating
family chapels. And although the mere presence of such a generous patronage did not have to
guarantee the creation of

Caste System In Ancient Greece
The caste system in ancient India and citizenship in ancient Greece both have their strengths and
weaknesses in their effectiveness concerning social organization in society. India and Greece
developed around the same time, within a thousand years of urban revolution as ancient city based
civilizations, even so these two societies developed in entirely different ways. (Worlds, 2384) In
Ancient India it was the caste system and in ancient Greece it was citizenship, the caste system a
group of people who will together, and also marry one another, thus creating groups and then
excluding others from these two intimacies. (Worlds, 2435) While citizenship in ancient Greece, was
being a citizen in that said country, it is also means having an allegiance to the polis, the city state.

Essay on The Benefits of Naps
What do people think of when they first hear the word nap? Everyday sayings such as snatching a nap,
being caught napping, snoozing, or stealing forty winks are all beneficial daily activities we need to
add to our busy life. If we do, we will be more awake and capable to reach our full potential as an
individual. People don t realize how important a nap can be. Although popular beliefs suggest that
naps are a waste of time, naps actually increase productivity by resting the brain. Nap Basics In order
to obtain the full benefits of the nap, there are certain rules that need to be followed. Following these
guidelines will ensure maximum effectiveness. One condition is that naps should be taken in the early

You will be able to accomplish more. (qtd. by Griffey 42) An afternoon nap helped him with his many
responsibilities. Leonardo da Vinci used naps so much that he didn t need to sleep at night. Every two
hours, he would take a fifteen minute nap. Many believe this contributed to his seemingly endless
supply of creativity (Griffey 10). Thomas Edison would take one to two naps per day, and once turned
a patron away because he was taking a nap (Griffey 73). Bill Clinton was known for taking naps
whenever he could (Griffey 52). These famous figures dispel the myth that taking naps means ones
lazy. They accomplished so much, yet knew their individual limitations. They gave full effort when
frequent occasions required, but they also refused to run too fast. We can learn from their examples,
and restore the nap to our everyday routine. The Need for Naps In today s busy world, fatigue in the
early afternoon is nearly normal. Many believe that this slump is caused by a heavy lunch. However,
in reality, this occurs because we were meant to have a mid afternoon nap (Jacobs). Those who take
twenty minutes to nap when this slump occurs receive special benefits because sleep during the day is
more restful than extra sleep in the morning (Scott). For everyone this can be a tough to do, especially
when you have something so beneficial. Society would do well to make room for naps. When you

What Is Ancient Aztec Civilization

The Most Interesting
The Aztec civilization was the most interesting thing that I learned about in this class. The Aztecs
evolved from a poor semi nomadic group to the rulers of the most powerful empire ever developed in
ancient Mesoamerica (pg 322). I have always thought how advanced and functional their society was
is incredible. Societies today can learn from their civilizations structure. The capital city, Tenochtitlan,
was founded in the year AD 1325 and had a population that reached up to 300,000 people. The city
was build on a grid pattern with a network of canals and bridges. The city was broke up into four
districts each with its own ceremonial center and market. Within the districts there were around twenty
calpulli and each had its own plaza, temple, and market. The sacred precinct was at ... Show more

The first class consisted of the nobles, the leading priests, and the emperor. The second class consisted
of the ordinary citizens who lived in the calpulli. The third class was made up of the serfs and the
fourth made up of the slaves. Back then there was a division of power and job specialization. This
structure resembles a structure similar to todays. People are elected to be in top positions that are in
charge of people in lower positions. For example back then the emperor was elected to the position,
and now days we elect people into positions like congressman and city council. Then below that that
are business owners, employees, house workers, etc. The ordinary citizens were required to attend
school for agriculture and warfare. I think this is important to note because back then they were being
required to learn what they had to know in order to help society function at the level it was at. Today
students are required to learn up to a standard that is thought to be enough to function and help

Bareth Circle Allusions In Dubliners
Thus, we find that the early stories contain but the barest allusions to the Ninth Circle, and they tend
toward foreshadowing more than anything else, portending both the general literary and philosophical
thrust of the book, and the development of the characters from childhood to maturity, especially
spiritually. The second half of Dubliners, focused on adults and adult problems, contain the bulk of
Ninth Circle allusions, and some seem so deliberately crafted around the idea of the Ninth Circle, that
one might call them homages to Dante. In A Painful Case, we find over a half dozen obvious allusions
to the final three canti of Inferno. James Duffy, upon learning of his former fiancée s suicide (she
deliberately steps in front of an oncoming train), finds himself in a state of severe melancholy as he
realizes that she killed herself out of a sense of betrayal, her betrayal to her family with regard to her
affair with James, and her betrayal by James with regard to his decision to run away. James ponders all
this as he makes his way through a deserted park and along a lakeshore frozen in the depths of a
dismal December the likes of which Ireland had never before known, and which all worried it might
know forevermore (source). Joyce writes, James gnawed the rectitude of his life (Joyce 113), which
puts the cogent reader in mind of Count Ugolino della Gheradesca, one of the denizens of the Ninth
Circle. Dante describes him as gnaw[ing] upon the head of one of his

Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi, By Anne Moody
Being born into a racially divided society, such as America during slavery and the decades after the
Civil War, does not mean that you are born with the knowledge of racism. Racism is something that
we are not born with and that we are raised to experience, follow, or fix. During the 19th century and
all the way up till mid 20th century, racism was one of the biggest issues in America. Former slaves
and anyone who had lived in America for some time, was aware of the racial tension that traveled
through the heart of the nation and only got worse the more south you go. In Anne Moody s
autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, Moody s life is told through her eyes. It goes through
her childhood until her participation in the Civil Rights movement. One of the major parts in the book
is her slowly realizing the racial divide in America and the disadvantages that her skin color had come
with. All the racism Moody experienced as a child until she was an adolescent led to her decision to
become part of the Civil Rights movement. Growing up in rural Mississippi was a childhood filled
with racism, segregation, and intimidation. These came with every childhood, black or white.
Growing up in rural Mississippi as a black child just added more complications like disadvantages,
lower quality of life, the risk of being lynched, and many more horrors. This was the reality for Anne
Moody. Anne Moody was a young, black girl who grew up living with her father, mother and younger
siblings.

Positive Effects Of Gentrification
Many cities have been rejuvenated throughout the world. Santa Ana located in California, has been
one of the victims of gentrification. The most affected area is Downtown Santa Ana. Fourth Street has
been used to exemplify how gentrification works. Downtown Santa Ana has been almost completely
modified. Gentrification has it s positive effects just like it has it s negative effects. The negative
consequences include displacement, loss of cultural identity, and increasing rent. First of all, one of
the reasons to why gentrifiers should stop the process of modifying cities is displacement.
Displacement is a bad consequence because buildings are being placed in a bad neighborhood. For
example, Source 4 includes a link to a poem about a crime that took place in the San Francisco s
mission district, three latino immigrants were brutally beat and injured by a white man with a crowbar.
He is the owner of a brand new bar on 16th street. A man named Paul Flores wrote a poem to address
the problems that gentrification has caused in our cities. In his poem he repeatedly asks, Are you doing
that crowbar thing? He then mentions, Doing that Forget about El Centro del Pueblo thing and
volunteer at the pirate store instead thing? This is clearly a great example of displacement being a
consequence of gentrification. The gentrifiers are so concentrated on making money but don t realize
that placing a building with a completely different background than the rest, can result in

What Are The Weaknesses Of The Hong Kong Crisis
Hong Kong has always been a major international financial and business center in the East Asian
region. It could not avoid being affected by the crisis .Even though It was the only economy with a
fully convertible currency and was known for beating speculations on its monetary and fiscal
structure, it was drastically affected by the crisis. It had the estimated exchange reserves of US$90
billion(in 1997),still .it could not protect the country from the financial and economic turbulence
brought in, due to the crisis.
Causes
Interest rates rose in defense of the Hong Kong dollar( which is pegged to the US dollars under
currency board ). The People s Republic of China promised to support to Hong Kong by committing
to not devalue the yuan so as to defend the Hong Kong dollar.
But the floatation of the Taiwan dollar intensified attacks on Hong Kong dollar .

The Govt set up the Hong Kong exchange and clearing Company in March 2000 and proposed to

special sessions may be called by the governor in case there was unfinished business at the end of the
regular session or a problem has arisen. While special sessions are required to be 30 days or less, there

Informative Speech Scientists Einstein and Heisenberg A. Introduction

contemporary view of the world (Also called in Theology the Zeitgeist ).
I have chosen two of them who were in many ways just opposites. One is extremely famous and the
other is almost unknown except to specialists. The most famous is of course Albert Einstein. He has
significantly altered our view of the world with his Theory of Relativity.

He would just learn what interested him. He spent hours with thought experiments like how would it

This sounds very foolish and naturally many people at that time thought the same. But it had a
concrete background in the scientific circles of the later 19th century. They had begun to measure the
speed of light and that is were it all started.
But to understand the issue we have to go back a bit to Issac Newtown who was revolutionary
scientist and discovered the law of gravity and the basics of the laws of physics. These were not
revolutionary, but revolutionary was the ability to get a mathematical grasp on it so they could
calculate.
Newtown made it possible to calculate the path of a bullet. Very important for the military.
He made an interesting observation. When you take a ball in your hand and throw it, the ball will have
a certain speed while it is moving away from you. But if you see somebody in a train throwing a ball
the speed of the ball adds up to the speed of the train. This does not seem to be the case if you are
yourself in the train throwing that ball. The ball moves away with the same speed as it did when you
performed the same thing on the earth.
The Speed of the ball is dependant on the viewpoint. Depends from where you measure it. This is a
kind of Newtownian Relativity. The speed of an observed incident like a flying ball depends on your
own speed.

The Battle of Hastings Led by William of Normandy
The Battle of Hastings took place in October of the year 1066. It was fought between the Normans
(French) and the Anglo Saxons (English). The English were led by Harold II, while the French were
led by William of Normandy. William of Normandy made some key decisions in the battle that
allowed his army to defeat the English. William of Normandy followed Sun Tzu s Art of War and
because of the he went on to win the battle. William of Normandy won the battle by following Sun
Tzu s teachings of Weak points Strong, Strategy and tactics, and leading by example. William of
Normandy used Sun Tzu s tactic of attacking the enemy s weakness while avoiding the enemy s
strength. According to Sun Tzu Art of War When Strong, avoid them. If of high morale, depress them.
Seem humble to fill when conceit. If at ease, exhaust them. If united separate them. Attack their
weaknesses. Emerge to their surprise. The previous quote tells us to stay away from enemy who is
strong, and if they are strong, make them weak. Then once they are weak attack them and exploit their
weaknesses. William of Normandy demonstrated this tactic very well. He exploited the strong shield
wall of the Anglo Saxons by retreating his army. Although it may seem counterintuitive as the French
retreated the Shield Wall broke as the Saxons charged at their opponent. The now vulnerable Saxon
Army was wiped out by William s cavalry. William of Normandy successfully used Sun Tzu s tactic of

Hills Like White Elephants By Ernest Hemingway
Hills Like White Elephants, short story by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1927 in the periodical
transition and later that year in the collection Men Without Women. The themes of this sparsely
written vignette about an American couple waiting for a train in
Spain are almost entirely implicit. The story is largely devoid of plot and is notable for its use of irony,
symbolism, and repetition. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The Short Story brings the read into a
discussion, between a man and a girl. They go back and forth about trying to make a decision in their
relationship. Some say Hemingway gives the reader very little in insight, and leaves the reader
somewhat baffled. Hemingway gives us a glimps into a conversation that might be the hardest thing
the couple has ever faced in their relationship. They are discussing weather or not the girl should have
a procedure, and abortion.
The setting of the short story takes place in the 1920 s in Spain, at a Train station.
The American, the male in the story expresses how hot it is outside. The American and the girl sit and
drink beers outside, where there is no shade. The couple sits and drinks it seems they are drinking to

the girl. I believe this is a metaphor. The man says I ve never seen one and brushes the girls comment
aside. The man and the girls seems to be having a bit of a disagreement. you started it the girl says .

How Did Theodore Roosevelt s Impeachment
Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt was born with asthma and three siblings, two younger siblings and one older
sister. His asthma was so bad that sometimes he would wake up in the middle of night feeling like he
was being smothered to death scaring both himself and his parents. After going on a family trip to the
Alps, young Roosevelt found out that exercise minimized his asthma. He and his father did exercises
together and strengthened his body. For his education, Roosevelt had lots of tutors that taught him
French and German and other classical classes. Roosevelt found himself interested in zoology much to
the delight of his cousins who enjoyed catching squirrels and such for amusement with him and
making little museums.

Roosevelt became the state assemblyman of Albany. Financier Jay Gould wanted to lower his taxes,
but Theodore had many suspicions about Judge Theodore Westbrook, including a conspiracy between
the judge and Jay Gould. Theodore Roosevelt got an approval for an investigation to take place,
seeking an impeachment of the judge. The committee decided to follow through with the investigation
but rejected the impeachment. Theodore grew in popularity because of the wisdom he showed in the
finding of the criminals, and this helped him win the re election of 1882. Roosevelt wrote many bills,
one being a civil service reform bill after allying with Governor Cleveland. Roosevelt served as the
Chairman of the Committee on affairs of Cities in his final term and wrote more bills than any other
lawmaker.
On his twenty second birthday, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee. Only two days after her
pregnancy, she died of an undiagnosed Bright s Disease. Only eleven hours earlier, Theodores mother,
Mittie, died in the same house of typhoid fever. Stricken with grief, his daughter was taken into the
care of Bamie, his sister for three years while Roosevelt grieved. In his biography, he did not mention
Alice or his second wife Edith.

Department Of Defense (DOD) Group Analysis
According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Group 1 is the first classification of a UAV. This
classification includes UAVs that have a maximum weight of approximately 0 20 pounds. These two
classifications of Group 1 UAVs are Micro and Nano UAVs. On average Micro/Nano UAVs has a low
speed, small size, weight, and low operating altitude. They weigh as little as 100 grams (Qassim,
2014), which limits their capability to carry large payloads, airspeed and normal operating altitude.
The majority of hobbyist UASs resides in this category. The second classification UAS is Group 2,

The group 3 UASs have traditionally been reserved for large commercial or governmental planes.
However, it also includes some very large hobbist planes. According to Qassim Group 3 is considered
large UAV with maximum gross takeoff weight of 1320 pounds. This UAV is capable of flying up to
an altitude of 18,000 MSL. Group four is also a large UAV which is similar to group 3. The one major
gap that group four has its weight, which can be greater than 1320 and its ability to fly at any airspeed
up to 18000 MSL. Lastly group 5 which is the largest UAS technology. It has a maximum Gross
Takeoff weight of 1320 pounds and has the capability to fly over 18000 MSL at any airspeed (Qassim,
2014). UAVs may be fixed wing aircraft, or rotary wing aircraft. Each type comes with own advantage
and disadvantage. The fixed wing can have higher endurance since it can glide. Although it has the
upper hand in endurance, it is not agile enough for delivery or any kind contraband usage. On the
other hand the Rotary wing has agility since it has the ability to hover and maneuver in a confined
area. The downside of this type of UAS is endurance as a result of not being able to glide unlike the
fixed wing

Introduction of Nexity
Nexity is an online bank, which was initially called the People State of Grand and it was opened in
February 2000. Its headquarters are located in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Currently, David Long is
the President of Nexity and Greg Lee the CEO. The turnover represented an amount of ... Show more

Clients are more and more oriented to the more rentable channels like internet and ATMs. Virtual
banks consequently deliver a lot of services but only through internet that allow to reduce costs in
occupancy and salaries in order to offer better rates of interest (to 3 times better than averages). Virtual
low costs positioned banks compete against other virtual banks with good customer service, in house
costumer data and service center operations, strong management teams, a good mix of attractively
priced products, and low marketing costs. It s a price competition which includes lower margins
directly.
What about the entry barriers with potential entrants? It is a low threat. The largest barrier to entry is
the expenses in founding a bank: a new bank needs to raise 8 12 million to begin operations. But start
up costs for virtual banks are much less expensive than for traditional banks: virtual banks could begin
operations for millions less than traditional banks (no offices, etc.) , even though they ll have to invest
a lot in marketing and advertising budgets in order to attract depositors at the start up time. The second
barrier is loyalty to older, larger, and more established brand name banks. Here we can talk about a
network effect. And third, an existing bank holding company provides investments and backing for the
new bank by spinning off a separate banking entity.

Review Of Lemony Snicket s The Bad Beginning
I ve read many books in my life that touched me but I ve never read a book that changed me as much
as the book The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket.. The book starts, of course, with a bad beginning.
The main characters, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire lose their parents in a fire. They are sent to
live with a really distant relative named Count Olaf. He is very cruel and makes the orphans do many
hard chores. But one day he offers the orphans to join him in a play about marriage. Count Olaf would
be the groom and Violet would be the bride. It is supposed to be a fake marriage but the kids find out
that it is real. They find out that the only reason he is doing it was to steal the Baudelaire fortune. They
refused were forced to participate. During ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I say that because I felt bad for the orphans but they helped me understand that not every relative will
be kind. Like Count Olaf. Plus, if someone is mean in the beginning and then they suddenly become
nice, they probably mean more harm than good. Another thing I realized was that my life can turn
around at any moment. Just like the Baudelaires. Second, now I see myself as a totally different
person. I am more of an open person now. I like to share my thoughts and how I feel about things. If
the Baudelaires had shared their thoughts about staying with Count Olaf, and the way he treated them
earlier they probably would have suffered less. This book also helped me think about others more. If I
ever see anyone suffering as much the orphans I will totally speak up. Last, this book changed the way
I see the world. Now I understand that on any average day anything as bad as losing my home and my
parents could happen. I know now that the world will not believe that you ve been tortured if you don
t have proof, just like they denied the Baudelaires. Also, I trust less people now. If the orphans had
trusted Count Olaf their lives would have been much

Case Incident 2 Amended Sales Tax Return
I have prepared the amended sales tax return to claim the tax paid on purchase of boxes in the past
there years. The total taxes paid on the purchase of boxes from November 2013 through June 2016
were $42,178.84. The expected tax refund from amended sales tax return for the period is $6,896.00.
When tax paid purchases resold deduction exceeds tax liability the deduction is limited to the amount
of the taxpayer s tax liability under Regulation 1701. In this case, the taxpayer would be required to
request its vendors to file claims for refund, since a refund is restricted to the person who paid the tax
to the Board. Any refund paid to the vendors in this type of situation would be conditioned upon
payment by the vendor to the person who paid the tax reimbursement to the vendor. California State
Board of Equalization. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You could ask your vendor to claim for tax refund for the period and reimburse the tax to NTFS.
However, I heard you have already asked CDS if they would refund the tax, but CDS said they would
not refund any tax because resell certificate was not submitted to CDS before, and that s why they
have been charging sales tax.
Enclosed please find eight amended sales use tax return for the period from November 2013 to June
2016. Please review the amended sales use tax return, and if you have any question, please feel free to

Negative Critique on Alan Goldman s View on Medical...
Medical Paternalism In the realm of medical ethics, there are many topics that are debated and
discussed, but there is not necessarily one clear, correct answer. One of these topics is paternalism.
Many questions are bandied back and forth: is it beneficial, should it be disallowed entirely, are there
instances when paternalism is good and beneficial, and the list goes on. For each of these questions
there have been authors who have provided their comments. One such author is Alan Goldman. He
draws a very firm line on paternalism, simply put: medical paternalism is deleterious to a patient
because it intrudes on their primary rights of liberty and autonomy. This paper is going to expound
upon Goldman s viewpoint in detail, going through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then breaks his argument down into several smaller sections. For starters, he outlines what he
believes to be the common argument made by those who are in favor of medical paternalism. He
presents five points that encompass that viewpoint.
First, disclosure of information to the patient will sometimes increase the likelihood of depression and
physical deterioration, or result in the choice of medically inoptimal treatment. Second, disclosure of
information is therefore sometimes likely to be detrimental to the patient s health, and perhaps hasten
his death. Third, health and prolonged life can be assumed to have priority among preferences for
patients who place themselves under physicians care. Fourth, Worsening health or hastening death can
therefore be assumed to be contrary to patients own true value orderings. Lastly, paternalism is
therefore justified: doctor may sometimes override patients prima facie rights to information about
their risks and treatments or about their own conditions in order to prevent harm (Vaughn, 96.)
Goldman then goes on to tackle just one of those points, with his argument being if one point in the
opposing argument can be discredited, then the whole argument falls apart. The point that he believes
to be wrong is the third point: it can be presumed that a patient s health and well being carry more
weight than other aspects of their life. Goldman presents several reasons why he believes the third
point to be

Virgin Birth Research Paper
A virgin birth is also known as parthenogenesis, and it was only documented among captive animals,
perhaps by the stress, or isolation. Scientifics discovered that the virgin birth occur in 70 different
species such as amphibians, reptiles, cartilaginous, bony fish and birds but the reasons aren t quite
understandable. Scientifics after finding out about the virgin birth they started thinking if the animals
have done this millions of year ago. A question that hasn t been answered is, Why among vertebrates,
can fish, reptiles and birds have virgin births, but mammals, including humans, seemingly cannot? The
first animal to have a virgin birth was the 6m long phyton call Thelma according to the scientists. She
had made eggs without the need of a male sperm or DNA. She used a method call polar body, this
object is the same as sperm. Each of her offspring have two copies of her chromosomes, they were
called half clones of Thelma at the first article. Even though Thelma and her offsprings are special
they are not far from being like any other animal. Another weird type of virgin birth was when a

documented, scientists reported about the snakes. Reports show that reptiles can hold on to sperm for
several years, so initially researchers considered that the lizard s eggs had a father. After this happened
scientifics recommended that the species should not be isolated, they started to be afraid that they will

Budget Transition
A Brief Historical Review of Budget Transitions
Given the size and intricacy of the federal government, transition planning is a formidable task. An
incoming president is responsible for making more than 4,000 appointments and managing an
organization with a budget of nearly $4 trillion and more than 2 million civilian employees performing
missions as diverse as national defense, education, preventing the spread of disease and managing an
energy infrastructure. Any candidate for the presidency must be ready to handle the demands of
leading a massive organization on day one.
The presidential budgetary transition can be broken down into 3 distinct phases; pre election planning,
post election transition and post inaugural handover. Each of these stages takes a differing and
increasingly in depth approach to the budget.

The appointment of Cabinet positions solidifies the President Elect s budget proposals by
implementing staff that the President has vetted to fulfill his budgetary goals.
Lastly, the post inaugural or handover period, which works in a more managerial role within the
budget process, including managing the budget s first 100 days in office, developing policy priorities
and working on urgent issues, and conducting agency assessments to review the budget that the
incoming President has preordained with his Cabinet.
The complexity of the presidential transition process is simplified when it is broken down into
manageable work streams such as policy implementation, agency review, presidential appointments,
and operations.

Name Change Controversy Research Paper
Race in America 2014: The Washington Redskins
The Washington, D.C. football team, known as the Redskins, has generated controversy for years
because of its name and mascot. Some say that the name should be changed because the term redskin
is a racial slur that denigrates Native Americans. Others, including team owner Dan Snyder, insist that
the name denotes only the football team s proud history, and that changing the name is unnecessary.
In September of 2014, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a satirical comedy news program, aired the
following segment about the Redskins name change controversy:

Difference Between Slavs And Italian Immigrants
Slavs and Italians, being the most predominant immigrants during the late 1800 s, faced a series of
appalling living conditions. For instance, Slavs who formed families and lived in the company built
homes were most of the time in need and cultivated flora in order to survive on the very low wages
paid by companies. Woman as a part of the family had to also contribute economically, this included
taking jobs at textile mills and taking care of the gardens at home. Protein supply for these immigrants
was small. Immigrants worked 10 12 hours a day, they relied on a diet with high levels of
carbohydrates and starch, which provide them with temporal energy and fulfillment. Italians, as said in
text had it worse , instead of living in company owned

Essay on Inconstancy in Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
Inconstancy in Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) explains inconstancy as the recurrent and generally unexpected
or impulsive change from one condition to another. It is the state or quality of being inconstant and
unfaithful by virtue of being undependable or deceitful. Set in Messina, Sicily, Shakespeare s Much
Ado About Nothing is a very popular play generally viewed as one of his happiest comedies and is
often performed in theatres. However, the playfulness and cheerfulness of the play is haunted by a
cloud of melancholy which tells readers of the potential dangers and pain that can result from
miscommunication, deceit and treachery. This play has two entwining plots; one revolves around the

Some critics have argued that in the end, Benedict and Beatrice are not significantly different from
Claudio and Hero (Bevington 218). The play reveals a fundamental inadequacy of the human nature in
dealing with the social world which has two mutually mistrusting genders. Humans are likely to
harbour outrageous tendencies, even when they think they are being very sensible and their
inadequacies are what cause so much ado about nothing . The important question is whether a person
can survive all that meaningless ado (Auden 115).
Leonato stays in Messina with Hero, his daughter, Beatrice, a humorous and clever niece and,
Antonio, his elderly brother and Beatrice s father. Leonato welcomes some friends, soldiers from war:
Claudio, Benedict, Don Pedro and Don John. Claudio immediately falls in love with Hero and decides
to marry her while Beatrice and Benedict start their war of humorous insults but eventually fall in
love. Don John plans to disrupt everyone s happiness by staging a scene where Claudio and Don
Pedro see a woman they believe to be Hero making love to another man. Claudio is represented as an
inconsistent and disreputable lover who is quick to doubt his bride to be, Hero. He gets angry and
accuses Hero of unfaithfulness on their wedding day and leaves her at the altar. Hero family device a
plan to fake her death and wait until the truth comes out. The truth about Hero s innocence eventually
comes out and Claudio grieves for her

The Great Leapfrog Contest and
In the short stories, #8220;The Good Corn #8221; written by H.E. Bates and #8220;The Great
Leapfrog Contest #8221; by William Saroyan techniques such as characters, point of view, setting and
structure work together to explore the issue of personal conflict and establish tension between the
main characters in each story. An examination of these techniques allow a more enhanced reading of
the texts and in turn evoke a particular response from the reader. In the short story #8220;The Good
Corn #8221; there are three main characters which are portrayed in such a way as to allow a tension
and personal conflict to be created but only after the reader is positioned to respond favourably to the
characters initially. Joe Mortimer and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This conjures images of a peaceful and thriving natural environment with no invasion of manmade
inventions. However, as the personal conflict of Mrs. Mortimer #8217;s sterility is developed the
setting complements her feelings of worthlessness and loneliness as the reader becomes aware that the
farm is in fact isolated and any outside contact with people is welcomed. This is demonstrated through
the passage #8220;Whenever the Mortimer #8217;s caught sight of them [the children on the train]
there was a sudden brightness on their faces. #8221; Similarly, in #8220;The Great Leap Frog Contest
#8221; the setting enhances the portrayal of Rosie as the underdog. The fact that the contest takes
place on a highway that is made out of #8220;dirt and asphalt #8221; conveys an atmosphere of a fast
paced competition and it is painstakingly obvious that Rosie #8217;s gender does not complement this
setting. Hence, she is portrayed as an outsider not only because she is fighting a boy, but also because
of the nature of her surroundings. Both short stories employ third person point of view to enable the
reader to see into the lives of all the characters presented. While this doesn #8217;t allow a more
personalized insight into the main characters mind it does give the authors freedom to explore all of

  • 2. Rubbish Can Be Sayd To Have Value In A Consumer Society Outline the ways in which rubbish can be said to have value in a consumer society. A consumer society is increasingly organized around consumption of goods and leisure, rather than the production of materials and services. It rests on consuming material goods as a supreme characteristic of value. Therefore individuals who do not consume are viewed as undervalued. Peoples consumer choices (taste and style) are seen to be indicators of who they are as a person and of their moves within the games of class, prestige, status, hierarchy, fashionability ( Features of a Consumer Society McGregor 2011). Many spending and investments are committed to consuming, regardless of whether it is good for the environment and health, for example the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Up to now the focus is on the idea that rubbish doesn t have value. That is, rubbish has no value to the person who throws it away. ( Rubbish Society , 2009 p.118).It might still have negative value, in that disposing of it money and costs time. For example if a person has to take any of his household items for disposal then it will have negative value for him, considering transportation costs and the consumed time But rubbish can potentially have value for others. As the old saying goes: One man s junk is another man s treasure .(Unknown). This is essential for defining how come there are businesses of rubbish. Rubbish allows them to make money by disposing it off in proper manner. These businesses turn rubbish into something of value. They make this possible by converting it into marketable products or by moving it away for dumping. ( Rubbish Society , 2009 p.119). The growth in the recycling industry and people s increased awareness and participation in recycling programs all over the world has also created an opening for larger organizations to operate recycling and disposal operations on an international level. The process of recycling can thus give value to rubbish and waste by producing outputs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Aristophanes’ Clouds a Satyr Play Written in 419 BCE Aristophanes Clouds, if read hastily, can be interpreted as a mindless satyr play written in 419 BCE. Yet the chorus warns the reader not to expect the play to have farcical ploys like a hanging phallus stitched on the actors to evoke a laugh, but to take note of underlying seriousness as she [the play] comes in trusting only her words (Clouds 538 44). Even if the play does use some low devices, the play s message is sophisticated and can be read as a warning to Socrates. Aristophanes is a friendly critic of Socrates and warns Socrates to change his ways for Athens and for the good of himself (Whidden). Plato s Symposium and especially his Apology of Socrates does not discount the claims made in Clouds about the dangers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socrates counters Meletus s weaker claim by asserting that he believes in Diamonic matters, so then there is also a great necessity that I [Socrates] believe in diamonia (Apology 27c). Diamons are not exactly defined. Scholars have debated this point, and one interpretation would be that they seem to be a being half divine and half human (Apology footnote 37). Socrates uses them as an example of gods that he believes in, but he refers to them as a separate entity later in this same speech. They are referred to as a voice that Socrates hears, not unlike a conscience, that turns me [Socrates] away from whatever I am about to do, but never turns me forward (Apology 31d). Socrates uses that as the reason why he never got into politics, as the majority rule is usually against his own code of morals (31d). Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of prisoners without trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed (32d). Socrates may have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the charge that he corrupts the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Athenians acted out of fear of heavenly retribution, not morals (Whidden). Those youth found it acceptable to do whatever they wanted because of the apparent lack of gods and thunderbolts coming down from the heavens to smite those who deserve justice. Clouds Socrates argues, If in fact he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Night Watches Of The Buddha Question 2 Analyze the night Watches of the Buddha, and explain how the content was developed in the Mahayana Sutras. Mahayana Buddhism is originated in the first century C.E. and focuses on new concern for liberation through the assistance of a bodhisattva (Voorst ). Also, Mahayana Buddhism requires a body of scripture, and so began the Mahayana Canon (Voorst ). Mahayana Sutras is one of section of the Mahayana Canon, which focuses on the denial of the reality of existence and nonexistence in philosophical discussion (VOORST ). In the content of night Watches, it was developed in Mahayana Sutras and Night of Watches explains how Siddhartha Buddha reached Nirvana. This research examines the Watches of the nights and analyzes how it is developed in the Mahayana Sutras. While the first watch of the night, Siddhartha Gautama s mind was supreme calm , clear and purified when the light was raised in him as well as knowledge and insight raised. He saw continuous series of all his former births and even he saw more than hundred and thousands of his previous life (VOORST ). Therefore, he stated that there too I had such a name, belonged to such a clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure pain, and such the end of my life. Passing away from that state, I re arose here (Bhikkhu ). Thus he realized that he remembered his manifold past lives in their modes and gained knowledge of the cycle of death and rebirth. • 5. How Sportsmanship Can Be A Part Of A Team All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult to select a group of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3) respect their coaches. The formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always exists to drag the team down, to deflate their motives, and increase their egos; but that does not have any effect on the sportsmanship of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a team. It does not correlate with how many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of friends are on the team. It is not entirely internal or entirely external. Sportsmanship is not simply the willingness of an athlete to respect other teams; it is an athlete s ability to respect their own team and, most importantly, his or her self. Sportsmanship is innate, reflecting an athlete s character. Neither winning nor losing can change it. Over the years, I have joined a multitude of teams. Ballet in preschool. Followed by basketball in kindergarten. Gymnastics. Softball. Soccer. I tried them all. However, volleyball as the only one to stick. I started in third grade with big, bulky knee pads and cute hair bows, and ceased playing during my sophomore year with strong, bulky thighs and years of floor burn scars. I had been contemplating my departure from the one sport I ever truly played for months. Something was missing. I did not love it, but I could not find it in myself to hate it. ... She makes direct appeals to their humanity to expand their knowledge and influence their thouhts about slavery as a institution. This autobiography was published in a newspaper in the North and was part of the beginnings on ending slavery. Flint was a nasty, vile, and disgusting old man. He was not faithful to his wife and thought of Harriet as his property to do whatever he liked to. Harriet had once said that beauty was a curse for a slave girl, meaning that if a slave girl had the misfortune of beauty, her master would desire her. He would whisper vile things into Harriets ear. So many impure things that she could not bring herself to say in her auotbiography. She would try to object to his cruelity but he would always demand her service seeing as how he was her master. And, growing up knowing that she was to obey her master, she didn t have much of a fight. Dr. Flint not only abused Harriet, but threatened her with her life if she did not keep quiet about all he had done. She, herself, felt dirty, and tainted. Like the life and joy she had once experinced as a child had vanished, and was replaced with a dull, gray, world of emptyness. Even other slaves began to notice her sadness. The Stonewall Rebellion Or Stonewall Riots The Stonewall Rebellion or Stonewall Riots was a series of violent riots that took place between gay and trans activists, drag queens, and other patrons of The Stonewall Inn against the police after a raid had been carried out by the Sixth Precinct police. The days and rebellions that followed are monumental moments in LGBT and World history. For New York s gay and trans communities the 1960 s marks a turning point in their history; Sodomy had been reduced to a misdemeanour, with a maximum sentence of six months in prison, the anti gay accommodation rules of the New York State Liquor Authority had been overturned, allowing homosexuals to congregate and be served alcoholic beverages in bars, The American Psychiatric Association reclassified ... The Stonewall Inn had been registered as a private Bottle Bar which meant patrons were expected to bring their own liquor. The Genovese Family would often bribe the Sixth Precinct to turn a blind eye to the activities occurring in inn. However, in the early hours of June 28th 1969 and readied with a warrant for storing and selling liquor without a licence; the police prepared to raid The Stonewall Inn. The raid began just after 3a.m, and the police found the illegal liquor and began arresting employees while the crowd booed but remained otherwise calm. Howard Smith, a village voice reporter who stayed with the police throughout the riot reported During the gay power riots at the Stonewall last Friday night I found myself on what seemed to me the wrong side of the blue line. There is a lot of preparation, skill and strategies that are behind the process. The team must prepare for a race regardless of the length by getting the engines running to the RPM and efficiency needed to make sure the car is at maximum performance. They can not have errors when it comes to race time because one mistake could cost them their car or pride. According to Wikipedia, a thigh gap is a space between the inner thighs of some women when standing upright with knees touching. It s interesting how that one sentence represents everything that is wrong with our society. The idea of the thigh gap gained popularity in late 2012 after the annual Victoria s Secret Fashion Show, which featured numerous models, all of which had thin thighs. Several twitter accounts, blogs, and memes emerged all over the Internet and pictures of skinny thighs were spreading like wildfire on the so called thinspiration blogs. The average salaries paid to celebrity endorsers of major weight loss programs ranges from 500,000 to 3 million dollars. • 13. Stalin s Death After World War II After World War II, Berlin had been a constant problem area in East West relations. In 1948 49 Joseph Stalin had tried to blockade the Western sectors into submission by closing off all the land routes into the city, which were almost a hundred miles inside Soviet occupied territory. The West surprised him with a successful airlift that kept West Berlin supplied with sufficient essentials to survive. However, Stalin s death prevented a wall or something similar being constructed in 1953. In 1958, his successor, the unpredictable Nikita Khrushchev, had started threatening West Berlin s status once more. The Soviet leader compared the Allied occupied sectors to the West s testicles. Along with the separate and much longer Inner German border (IGB), which demarcated the border between East and West Germany, it came to symbolize a physical marker of the Iron Curtain that separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. Most Germans experienced the building of the Wall as a devastating blow. It was not just a brutal act in itself but also final proof, if proof were needed, that the reunification many still hoped for must remain a distant, even an impossible, dream. There was genuine outrage in West Germany (and to some extent in the East, though this was rapidly suppressed by the Communist secret police, the Stasi, who carried out thousands of arrests). However, given the renewed dangers of conflict during the previous few years, the building of the Wall, although it unleashed a brief East West showdown, was seen from a global perspective not necessarily the catastrophe that it first appeared. At the end of July 1961, the newly elected American President John F. Kennedy, had already ordered a military build up to cope with possible Soviet and Warsaw Pact designs on Berlin (and by implication West Germany). However, his actual response to the building of the Wall was downright muted. Washington made it clear that only if the Soviets and their East German protégés tried ... • 14. Example Of A Femme Fatale A femme fatale, a French term for fatal woman (Schimkowitz, 2014), is a strong willed, manipulative woman who is as alluring as she is dangerous. She is an irresistibly attractive woman who leads a man into difficult and dangerous situations with her seductive charms (Blakely, 2014). They used to be physically characterized as fierce sexing looking women with sharp eyeliners. This female archetype has been in existence since ancient times all around the world. The first example of a femme fatale in this paper is Veda Pierce (Ann Blyth) in Mildred Pierce, which was released in 1945, when many American soldiers returned from World War II. During the WWII period, women were the main providers for their families while American men were at war, which led to increase independent American women. Mildred Pierce, the mother of Veda, is one of the strong women who is working hard to support herself and her children. In contrast to her mother s effort, Veda takes advantage of her mother s kindness and money. She also betrays her by having an affair with Monte Beragon, who is already married to her mother. Veda has the looks and knows how to use her looks to attract men. And she is so ambitious that she does anything in order to get the most important thing to her which is money to live the high class life. Ultimately, a femme fatale leads the male into ruin. The way of sometimes hurting someone s feelings and sometimes boosting their confidence is the human form of somewhat lying. Lying is sometimes the right thing to do like lying to children, being private about personal business, and by protecting someone s feeling. Children are built on conspiracies and fantasies like Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and more. Those fantasy characters are the ones that make being a child worth living for. Naturally the management discussion in the annual report and financial statements indicates that IBM believes this will be a great growth area for IBM. My roommate and I were treated differently, to say the least. We were the only two mess cooks out of 20 non rated personnel. Her and I would switch every other month for more than one year. • 18. Southwest s Long Term Strategy With the vision and purpose of existence, Southwest s long term strategy is to provide superior service with low cost targeting point to point destinations. When compared with its competitors, Southwest s business model leverages the operations, resources and strategies very efficiently to minimize costs. The following are the few techniques/strategies which exemplify the success of Southwest s operations. For over decades, Southwest chose small and midsize airports in big cities, where its competition is relatively low. Using small airports is hassle free due to less traffic and congestion with an access to major markets. This allowed the southwest to reduce its turnaround time when compared to its competitors. This increased the aircraft utilization¬ by allowing aircraft to log more hours in the air. This is quite opposite to the way the other major airlines operate. Yet, the southwest strategy gave a competitive edge to gain market share and to achieve scale economies. Other airlines use hub and spoke system (anywhere to everywhere system) where passengers from small markets (spokes) fly to major airports (hubs) and then consolidate the passengers to long hauling flights. Challenging the conventional practice of the airlines industry, Southwest adopted a point to point system where services are catered to each origin to destination (i.e. a city pair) via nonstop flights (Gerald N. Cook, 2008). This reduces the travel time as there are no intermediate stops and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Oedipus Leadership Style Of Leadership Throughout history, there has been numerous accounts of great leadership. Whether its political or social leadership, each man or woman has his or her own unique set of characteristics that makes them great. Frequently they leave a legacy which is observed meticulously in order to understand the traits which corresponded to great leadership and its accomplishments. What is less often accounted for is the failure a leader experience during their time lifetime. Failed leadership in history and literature provides examples of how some of the greatest figure to ever exist become oblivious to the wake of destruction that they leave behind. Odysseus, Oedipus and Hamlet each have a fatal task to accomplish throughout their individual stories . While each man shows characteristics of wisdom, critical thinking and hold some position of royalty, these traits are not enough to save them from the destructive trail they leave behind. Odysseus, a King favored by the goddess of war and wisdom faced a twenty year journey of war and travel. This two decade journey of adventure came at the expense of crew and nearly his family. His failed leadership stems from his hubris that overcomes him at times, particularly when he leaves the island of the Cyclopes, Polyphemus. • 21. Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life Donald J. Moore Webster University September 18, 2016 Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment, one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas teachings proclaim that God created the universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law. A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also have the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and if she does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young woman take the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus ... • 23. Taking a Look at the Renaissance Renaissance is a generally accepted name for the era of great change in culture, art, and architecture which took place in the fifteenth and sixteenth century Italy, and then left its mark on the culture of the whole of Europe. During the Renaissance there was a significant shift of universally recognized values. They began to appreciate and recognize the creative possibilities of a human mind, which entailed a lot of consequences. One of them was the spectacular development of the architecture, and the new role of architecture and the architect in society. New forms of secular buildings such as villas, palaces, houses and town halls were exemplified, but most of building activity was centered on sacred buildings like the famed Tempietto by Donatano Bramante. Tempietto is a prime example of Renaissance architecture because not only it represents key characteristics like the simplicity of the composition, symmetry within structure, but it also resurrects precedents of Christian and pagan origin which were a baseline for many designs during that period. For many reasons the Renaissance began in Italy. In addition to the fact that there existed a rich artistic tradition, Italy was the richest country in Europe at that time. Cities were in bloom, rich merchants and bankers wanted to glorify their names ordering portraits, building magnificent palaces, decorating family chapels. And although the mere presence of such a generous patronage did not have to guarantee the creation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Bareth Circle Allusions In Dubliners Thus, we find that the early stories contain but the barest allusions to the Ninth Circle, and they tend toward foreshadowing more than anything else, portending both the general literary and philosophical thrust of the book, and the development of the characters from childhood to maturity, especially spiritually. The second half of Dubliners, focused on adults and adult problems, contain the bulk of Ninth Circle allusions, and some seem so deliberately crafted around the idea of the Ninth Circle, that one might call them homages to Dante. In A Painful Case, we find over a half dozen obvious allusions to the final three canti of Inferno. James Duffy, upon learning of his former fiancée s suicide (she deliberately steps in front of an oncoming train), finds himself in a state of severe melancholy as he realizes that she killed herself out of a sense of betrayal, her betrayal to her family with regard to her affair with James, and her betrayal by James with regard to his decision to run away. James ponders all this as he makes his way through a deserted park and along a lakeshore frozen in the depths of a dismal December the likes of which Ireland had never before known, and which all worried it might know forevermore (source). Joyce writes, James gnawed the rectitude of his life (Joyce 113), which puts the cogent reader in mind of Count Ugolino della Gheradesca, one of the denizens of the Ninth Circle. Racism is something that we are not born with and that we are raised to experience, follow, or fix. During the 19th century and all the way up till mid 20th century, racism was one of the biggest issues in America. Former slaves and anyone who had lived in America for some time, was aware of the racial tension that traveled through the heart of the nation and only got worse the more south you go. In Anne Moody s autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, Moody s life is told through her eyes. It goes through her childhood until her participation in the Civil Rights movement. One of the major parts in the book is her slowly realizing the racial divide in America and the disadvantages that her skin color had come with. All the racism Moody experienced as a child until she was an adolescent led to her decision to become part of the Civil Rights movement. Growing up in rural Mississippi was a childhood filled with racism, segregation, and intimidation. These came with every childhood, black or white. Growing up in rural Mississippi as a black child just added more complications like disadvantages, lower quality of life, the risk of being lynched, and many more horrors. The most affected area is Downtown Santa Ana. Fourth Street has been used to exemplify how gentrification works. Downtown Santa Ana has been almost completely modified. Gentrification has it s positive effects just like it has it s negative effects. The negative consequences include displacement, loss of cultural identity, and increasing rent. First of all, one of the reasons to why gentrifiers should stop the process of modifying cities is displacement. The Short Story brings the read into a discussion, between a man and a girl. They go back and forth about trying to make a decision in their relationship. Some say Hemingway gives the reader very little in insight, and leaves the reader somewhat baffled. Hemingway gives us a glimps into a conversation that might be the hardest thing the couple has ever faced in their relationship. They are discussing weather or not the girl should have a procedure, and abortion. The setting of the short story takes place in the 1920 s in Spain, at a Train station. The American, the male in the story expresses how hot it is outside. The American and the girl sit and drink beers outside, where there is no shade. The couple sits and drinks it seems they are drinking to pass time but to also not bring up the issues at hand the procedure. they look like white elephants says the girl. I believe this is a metaphor. The man says I ve never seen one and brushes the girls comment aside. This classification includes UAVs that have a maximum weight of approximately 0 20 pounds. These two classifications of Group 1 UAVs are Micro and Nano UAVs. On average Micro/Nano UAVs has a low speed, small size, weight, and low operating altitude. They weigh as little as 100 grams (Qassim, 2014), which limits their capability to carry large payloads, airspeed and normal operating altitude. Group four is also a large UAV which is similar to group 3. The one major gap that group four has its weight, which can be greater than 1320 and its ability to fly at any airspeed up to 18000 MSL. Lastly group 5 which is the largest UAS technology. It has a maximum Gross Takeoff weight of 1320 pounds and has the capability to fly over 18000 MSL at any airspeed (Qassim, 2014). UAVs may be fixed wing aircraft, or rotary wing aircraft. Each type comes with own advantage and disadvantage. The fixed wing can have higher endurance since it can glide. Although it has the upper hand in endurance, it is not agile enough for delivery or any kind contraband usage. On the other hand the Rotary wing has agility since it has the ability to hover and maneuver in a confined area. But start up costs for virtual banks are much less expensive than for traditional banks: virtual banks could begin operations for millions less than traditional banks (no offices, etc.) , even though they ll have to invest a lot in marketing and advertising budgets in order to attract depositors at the start up time. • 45. Negative Critique on Alan Goldman s View on Medical... Medical Paternalism In the realm of medical ethics, there are many topics that are debated and discussed, but there is not necessarily one clear, correct answer. One of these topics is paternalism. Many questions are bandied back and forth: is it beneficial, should it be disallowed entirely, are there instances when paternalism is good and beneficial, and the list goes on. For each of these questions there have been authors who have provided their comments. One such author is Alan Goldman. He draws a very firm line on paternalism, simply put: medical paternalism is deleterious to a patient because it intrudes on their primary rights of liberty and autonomy. This paper is going to expound upon Goldman s viewpoint in detail, going through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then breaks his argument down into several smaller sections. For starters, he outlines what he believes to be the common argument made by those who are in favor of medical paternalism. He presents five points that encompass that viewpoint. First, disclosure of information to the patient will sometimes increase the likelihood of depression and physical deterioration, or result in the choice of medically inoptimal treatment. Second, disclosure of information is therefore sometimes likely to be detrimental to the patient s health, and perhaps hasten his death. Third, health and prolonged life can be assumed to have priority among preferences for patients who place themselves under physicians care. Fourth, Worsening health or hastening death can therefore be assumed to be contrary to patients own true value orderings. Lastly, paternalism is therefore justified: doctor may sometimes override patients prima facie rights to information about their risks and treatments or about their own conditions in order to prevent harm (Vaughn, 96.) Goldman then goes on to tackle just one of those points, with his argument being if one point in the opposing argument can be discredited, then the whole argument falls apart. The point that he believes to be wrong is the third point: it can be presumed that a patient s health and well being carry more weight than other aspects of their life.
