Dormant Commerce Clause Essay
Can you briefly explain what the dormant commerce clause is?
The negative commerce clause, also known as the dormant commerce clause is a doctrine established
by the U.S. Supreme Court, limiting individual states of the United States from passing legislation that
inappropriately discriminates against interstate commerce. The dormant commerce clause limits the
power of individual states to legislate on such matters and is not an express clause in the U.S.
Constitution (AMAR, K. 2007).
Why would dormant commerce clause apply to business?
The Dormant Commerce Clause is the belief that local and state laws are undemocratic if the state
places an unwarranted encumbrance on local commerce, moreover, even if Congress has not acted on
behalf of its commerce power it lies dormant (Chemerinsky, E., n.d.). An example would be, in the
case of C A Carbone, Inc. v. Town of Clarkstown, where the Court overturned an apparently alleged
town law that required all solid waste be treated at a privately ... Show more content on

However, this embargo in contrast to out of state discrimination does not prevent a state from
exercising its police power to protect state citizens, as long as the power is exercised evenly and
equally. For example, if a state wanted to weigh commercial vehicles on its highways to ensure they
did not exceed maximum weight, that feat would be permissible if the trucks came from out of state,
as long as the requirement applied equally to all trucks on that state s highways ( The Commerce,
Taxing, and Spending Clauses,

The Effects Of Stress On Stress And Health
According to a National Institute of Mental Health article on stress and health, stress is defined any
change in the environment that requires your body to react and adjust in response. The body reacts to
these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses.
Not all stress is bad, though. In fact, stress responses can be life saving in necessary situations. The
chemicals and hormones released during a stress response prepare the body to face a threat or flee to
safety, this is commonly known as the fight or flight response. When faced with a dangerous situation,
your heart rate increases, you breathe faster, your muscles tense, and your brain uses more oxygen, all
functions necessary for survival (Brannon et al., 2014).
Nonetheless, those same chemicals that can be life saving in short bursts are harmful if the response is
prolonged, as stress suppresses bodily functions that aren t needed for immediate survival (Brannon et
al., 2014). Further, your immunity is lowered and your digestive and reproductive systems stop
working normally (McEwen et al., 2011).
Feelings normally related with chronic stress and an overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol, are
anxiousness, nervousness, distraction, worry, and depression (Brannon et al., 2014). Additionally,
stomachache is common due to a slowing in the emptying of the stomach. Increase in appetite is
another physical symptom of stress, which can lead to weight gain. Stress also causes a weakening of
the immune

Ursa Minor Research Papers
My Cherished Constellation is Ursa Minor, also known as the little dipper. I have always been drawn
to Ursa Minor because I have a series of moles on my leg that, as a child, I would play connect the
dots on and discovered it looked a lot like the little dipper. I also had a special connection to the Ursa
Minor constellation because it is often depicted as the little bear and bears are one of my favorite
animals. Ursa Minor is the 56th constellation in size and contains one of the brightest stars and most
significant stars in the sky, the North Star (or Polaris). This constellation belongs to the Ursa Major
family of constellations, which includes such constellations as Draco, Leo, Lync, Corona Borealis and
Ursa Major. Ursa Minor is a really interesting constellation with a historical and astrological
connections.
There is an unknown fourth myth as to how Callisto and her son Arcas were thrust up into the sky as
mother and son, big and little, major and minor bear. Callisto was one of the most beautiful nymphs
and though she had sworn a vow of chastity, Zeus could not resist her. After an affair with Zeus,
Callisto gave birth to a beautiful son named Arcas. Arcas loved to hunt and would wander around in
the woods dreaming of hunting and killing all sorts of animals. Artemis, who never forgave Callisto
for destroying her virginity with Zeus, always kept a watchful and slightly vengeful eye on little
Arcas. As he grew older, he became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

submitted
Edson Councillor Gean Chouinard will be seeking his third term on Edson Town Council in his re
election campaign. Chouinard is married to his wife Karin and has two sons, Ryan, 16 and Darin 10.
Chouinard has called Edson his home for the past 36 years.
His passion and dedication has been shown by his complete involvement in volunteering, lobbying,
and completing the tasks he set out to accomplish. This election, Chouinard s campaign Building for

The Alberta government approved the funding for the construction of the new school, Mary Bergeron
Elementary. This not only created a safer and more modern update for the young students in our
community, but helped to create more employment in the downturn of the economy, stated Chouinard.
Groundbreaking of the new Parkland Lodge was another innovation for the betterment of Edson s
senior citizens. The new lodge will be more modern and comfortable for Edson seniors with a
projected 102 room capacity. Seniors will be able to enjoy privacy by occupying their own room,
unless sharing with a spouse. Completion of the senior s lodge is being planned for July, 2018.
Through tightening of the budget, Edson residents were able to enjoy no increase of their 2017
property taxes. This was accomplished by streamlining and cutting costs while still maintaining a fully
operational budget.
Lobbying for the certification of the Town of Edson airport was another initiative Chouinard helped to
implement. Future planning could one day see Edson on the map as a functional airport for Edson and
surrounding areas. Business transport will also increase the town s viability for tourism to maintain its
prosperity, said Chouinard.
Chouinard was asked of his long term goals running in this election, and if elected, what would those
goals be? His reply was that he would be working towards a safer

Chondroitin Research Paper
Joint pain is one of the most common problems among people over 50. This is good to know, but this
knowledge doesn t alleviate the pain and swelling in your joints. Taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can
help, but you re worried about the long use effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding. These concerns
have led many joint pain sufferers to consider natural remedies as a complement or replacement for
their current treatment. Some natural remedies and supplements have shown some promising results,
and Chondroitin is one of them.
What is Chondroitin?
Chondroitin (also known as Chondroitin Sulfate) is a chemical compound produced naturally by your
joints. Chondroitin helps nourish the cartilage between your joints and acts as a natural shock
absorber. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Glucosamine, and particularly Glucosamine sulfate, has is commonly used to treat osteoarthritis, and
is the form most widely studied for this use. Your body s glucosamine levels as you age and taking
glucosamine supplements may help you to restore damaged cartilage, the fundamental cause of
osteoarthritis pain.
Some studies have shown that glucosamine is as effective as nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) in reducing mild to moderate osteoarthritis pain. These studies also show that Glucosamine
takes more time to relieve pain, reducing pain in 4 8 weeks as compared to common NSAIDs like
Motrin and Advil, which reduce pain in about 2 weeks. the prestigious British medical journal, Lancet,
recently published the results of a three year study that found glucosamine sulfate was effective in
relieving pain and in stopping further joint cartilage damage
While the evidence is very promising for its use in the treatment of osteoarthritis, studies of
glucosamine for treatment of other joint pain related disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and
chronic low back pain have been much less compelling.

Skeleton Key Quotes
First off, Alex is clever and curious in the book Skeleton Key. He was clever throughout the book so
far. At the start of the book it says, He ran on tip toe... Now was the time to move (Horowitz 135 136).
This quotes explains that he was on a yacht and saw that one of his partners was in trouble and being
held hostage. Alex thought a diversion quickly, which was to set the yacht on fire. His goal was to get
everyone outside to help put out the fire while Alex and his partner escaped without being seen. It
went exactly as planned, but the boss was still in the room and he had to kill him to save his partner.
Further, the second reason he is clever is how he fought the security guard. During the fight he is
thinking how is he going to attack the enemy and defend him while trying to find an escape during the
fight. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last reason he is clever was for a situations on the plane. The book says, Wait a minute... asking
him to carry it (Horowitz 148 149). The quote explains that he was undercover with a couple of CIA
agents and the woman who was acting as the mother said he should keep is seatbelt because the
seatbelt light was still on and instead of saying no and make a scene with his fake mom he said ok
mother and put his seatbelt back on. Also at the start of the plane flight they have him a Gameboy,
which he thought was just a nice gift, but he realized they gave it to him because he would look the
least suspicious with it because it had gadgets in it which would help them on the mission. The second
word that describes Alex is curious. Towards the beginning of the book it states, He was in a
underground... telephone conversation in his mind (Horowitz 46 47). The quote is about when he
followed the guard around the tennis courts to see whom he was going to meet. Later, he realized that
it was a trap, which led to the fight where he knocked out the security

Maxi s Secrets Book Report
You may believe in one thing and get yourself so caught up in believing that it is true, that you don t
even realize that it is not. In the book, Maxi s Secrets, by Lynn Plourde, Maxi dies, at age 2 because of
bone cancer. Abby, a supporting character who is blind, is always there for Timminy even if she may
seem distant. The lunch room was crowded with kids on the first day of school. New kids trying to fit
in, just like I was last year, The cafeteria ladies rushing around because they are so not used to the

I kept thinking about my first day of school and how Abby never quite talked to me. I wish I could go
over to her house right now, but I didn t want to push her. Maybe she was trying to tell me that I was
never really her friend.
The window was cold against my forehead. Sweat beads started to form in my armpits and tears
started to form in my eyes. I couldn t have this start right now. Sixth graders are supposed to set the
example to younger kids, and even though I look like more of a fourth grader, I couldn t have a melt
down on the first bus ride home of the school year.
My hand lightly knocked on the door. I guess I had just walked all the way here, to the neighbors
house, without even thinking. Maxi has been on my mind all day. When I came off the bus, I thought I
saw her in the window, which I wish she was, because Maxi would tell me how to handle this.
The large front door opened, and Mrs. Peterson, Abby s mother stood, smiling down at me.
Hello there, Timminy, would you like to come in? Abby is in the kitchen. I nodded and squeezed my
way through the barely open door. The Petersons always had to only crack the door open when
someone was coming in or out, afraid that Darshan would

How Did The Plains Indians Impact On American Culture
The great plains also known as the american desert are a wide stretch of land in the centre of North
America. 35000 years ago, Indians first lived off the lands, they were The Plains Indians, people who
lived by themselves on the land until European settlement. Many things in the plains Indians lives
changed when the Europeans came, the most stand out changes were the introduction of guns, armour
and horse. This report will explain the impacts of contact on Indigenous people during European
settlement. The Indian population was constantly changing as tribes were continually moving in and
out of the area. Those who were permanent residents would live in villages of 9 to 90 huts made from
wood, mud and river weeds. This was due to villages being positions near rivers, lakes or niches, this
was because the niches were filled with large numbers of bison, otherwise known as buffalo. The

Loyalty In Macbeth
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play by the famous playwright, William Shakespeare. William
Shakespeare s plays are known for his character s dramatic aspects and how they are portrayed in the
play towards the reader or onlooker. Macbeth illustrates importance of Kingship and Natural Order. In
Macbeth the notion of honor is of one s word and loyalty to one s superior, in this case the king, King
Duncan. Despite of this, Macbeth displays defective relationships that loyalty is essential to the
relationship. By killing his comrade and friend, Banquo, Macbeth shows that he is untrustworthy and
his egocentric mind. By killing his king and relative, Duncan, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth reveal their
ambitiousness toward the hierarchy. Upon hearing the report of Macbeth becoming the Thane of
Cawdor and the prophecy that he will become king, Lady Macbeth prays to the spirits, ...Come, you

The Age Of Reason And The Enlightenment
The Age of Reason and The Enlightenment Period Within the course of Honors American Literature,
there have been numerous units of writing from within history. In the class, there were a total of eight
units covered. Everything from the Native Americans to Realism was studied in depth. Each
movement had its own strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, each movement had a core set of
beliefs that kept it a group of its own. Topics from religion to self achievement scattered the broad
spectrum of the literature representing these specific movements and time periods in literature (Barge).
When looking at a general overview, one can begin to make a decision on which period to them is the
best all around. One unit that was rather logical and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Native American unit is self explanatory and mainly focused on the Natives as well as their
traditions, legends, myths, and folklore. The main literature from the movement focused on nature and
animals and the relation between both of those and humans. Every tribe had its own eclectic and
diverse set of literature that they followed and every set varied. In one region, the Native American
Aztecs believed in Gods and Goddesses. One specific God they believed in was known as
Quetzalcoatl and it is said that they pit him as the controller of civilization in wind. He was also
known for guiding humans to live and grow their own crop. Continuing on with the tenet of the Native
Americans view on Gods and Goddesses brings in their set of Creation Myths. The Native Americans
had numerous myths that involved the creation of the earth. These texts include the Abenaki Creation
Story, Achomawi Creation Myth, and the Aztec Creation Story. Listed is just a few of the massive
amount of myths on creation from the Native American unit. While the Native American unit
contained a large amount of information and history, the ways of the literature and movement are too
old and outdated to apply to modern society. The usage of animals and nature to provide textual
support to human life sounds and appears outdated to modern society as well. There are no concurrent
figures that help to provide any depth

The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien Essay
Summary:
By and large they carried these things inside, maintaining the masks of composure (21). In Tim O
brien s The Things They Carried, the American soldiers of the Vietnam War carry much more than the
weight of their equipment, much more than souvenirs or good luck charms or letters from home. They
carried within themselves the intransitive burdens of fear, of cowardice, of love, of loneliness, of
anger, of confusion. Most of all, they carry the truth of what happened to them in the war a truth that
only those who fought in the jungles and the mountains and the marshes of Vietnam can ever
understand. These men can share their stories; but all that s all they are to everyone else: stories.
The Things They Carried is a story made up of stories about how the men carried their war stories and
their truths during the war and after the war.

What does live, active cultures mean? Does it mean that there is living bacteria in the yogurt? Isn t

Ronald Reagan and Communism
Ronald Reagan and Communism
Introduction
Critics remarked that Ronald Reagan tended to perceive things in terms of black and white, and his
attitude toward Soviet concerns was no different. The organizing principle of Reagan s defense and
foreign polices was anti Communism, and Soviet policy to him pervaded every part of the globe. Each
of Reagan s predecessors, from 1945 onwards, had been occupied with the possible Soviet threat
towards America but Reagan was obsessed with it. Unlike his predecessors, too, he saw no possibility
of compromise with the USSR, simply discounting communism as a sad, bizarre chapter in human
history whose last pages are even now being written (Dallek, 129).
Interestingly enough, Harper s editor Lewis H. Lapham commented that Reagan s anti Soviet rhetoric
may have reflected concerns about his own country. America was suffering from big government,
atheism, and relaxed moral standards. America saw in the USSR what it most fears in itself...
Americans portray [it] as a monolithic prison, a dull and confined place where nobody is safe and
nobody is free. The America of the 1980s portrayed Russia as a land of coarse commissars and
exploited peasants where cruel ideologies bent on world domination flourished and produced victims
of a repressive and greedy government. How different does this sound to capitalist America of
Reaganism? Indeed, Lapham concluded that Americans aim at the targets of their own despotism.

Dengue Fever And Dengue Syndrome
Dengue is a type of vector borne viral disease, transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes. Dengue has four
antigenically different virus stereotypes (DENV 1 4), (though there was a report in 2013 that identified
a fifth stereotype) (Guzman Harris, 2015) (Dengue, 2016) (Normile, 2013). It is estimated that there
are 50 million new cases of dengue fever each year worldwide. A portion of these cases can develop
into sever infections, namely dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, these sever
infections are also associated with increased mortality rates. Approximately 12,000 deaths each year
are contributed to dengue, and of these deaths the victims are mainly children (Bouzid et. al. 2014).
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines global climate change as a large scale change in
climate patterns over the years, which includes changes in rainfall and temperature related greenhouse
effects, where radiation gets trapped beneath the atmosphere. The average global temperature is
predicted to rise 2.0 4.5˚C by the year 2100, which would have significant impact on vector borne
diseases. The temperature range for dengue is between 14 °C and 40 °C. With a 2 °C increase in
temperature the extrinsic incubation period of dengue will be shortened and more infected mosquitoes
will be available for a longer period of time. Mosquitoes will also bite more frequently because of
dehydration and thus further increase man mosquito contact (WHO, 2014)

It Is Hard to Possess a Sense of Belonging When We Are...
The journey in finding our identity and belonging can often be a struggle, since we ask ourselves, who
am I vs. whom do others want me to be? And where do I belong? This point in our live is subjective,
because we want to feel accepted in society we deny ourselves of what we really are. It s hard to have

opinions and beliefs are differentiated from those around us, during this time some people may

No Russian: The Modern Warfare Against Videogame Violence
While the movie industry has powerful rating boards such as the Motion Picture Association of
America (MPAA) that regulate and censor an offensive product, the video game industry does not
have a respectable, official rating board. Instead, the videogame industry has the Entertainment
Software Rating Board (ESRB), which is a non profit, self regulatory body that was created in 1994
by the Entertainment Software Association. The ESRB esteems itself as the vanguard of providing
concise and objective information about the content in video games and apps so consumers, especially
parents, can make informed choices (ESRB). To provide guidance about age appropriateness and
content, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, while the liberal nature of the ESRB as a voluntary board existing merely for guidance
has allowed for much artistic expression in videogames, the lack of clear, meaningful regulations have
enabled 21st century videogames to not only tread, but also violate an increasingly thin line of moral
boundaries concerning artistic expression.
As the elevator was rising, Russian ultranationalist terrorist leader Vladimir Makarov gazed intently at

of videogame history. During the level Remember No Russian of the popular first person shooter

attempted to drag the injured to safety; however, those self less efforts were trampled on by more

Communism Socialist And Communism
Part I proved what should be obvious: That governments are composed of groups of people and that
socialist and communist governments are groups of people who collectively and directly own or
regulate the means of production. Thus, the Leftist talking point that failed socialist and communist
regimes of the past and present weren t really socialist and communist has been shown to be a lie.
In this part we will demonstrate that the practical implications of this deception are dysfunctional in
the extreme because their programme can only be implemented by force of arms and governments
never give up power voluntarily.
It can be shown via the logic of the dictionary definitions that governments are merely groups of
people with the authority to govern a particular region, state or nation. And that socialist and
communist governments are merely groups of people who collectively own or regulate the means of
production.
One is supposed to ignore the obvious and instead pretend that a group of people collectively and
directly owning or regulating the means of production is some other vague entity but not a
government. The socialists will also insist that these reality defying facts absolve them of any
responsibility for the mass murder and repression by the people collectively and directly owning or
regulating the means of production. And why would they try to deceive the world over something like
that?
How are the Socialist s grandiose plans for a Worker s Paradise

Herbert Hoover s Government Intervention
The great depression kept going on. Millions of Americans were homeless and jobless. Soup kitchens
were popping up everywhere there were people. The people started to turn to the government for help.
But America s 31st president, Herbert Hoover, didn t think so. While many people believed that
relying on the government was the answer, Hoover thought that self reliance and relying on each other
would relieve them of this economic crisis, not government intervention. And as the people kept
prying, Hoover kept refusing. Desperate for a place to call home, and knowing that the government

Osteoporosis And How It Begins
Osteoporosis and How It Begins
Common fractures that occur in the spine, hips, and wrist are frequently related to osteoporosis.
Sometimes mild stressors such as coughing or bending over may cause a fracture of brittle and
weakened bones related to osteoporosis. Bone is live tissue that is continuously damaged and repaired.
Out with the Old, In With the New
Osteoporosis takes place when the removal rate of the old bone tissue is faster than the formation of
new bone. Normally in the beginning stages of bone loss there are no symptoms exhibited. When
weakness has developed in the bones due to osteoporosis, some signs and symptoms that appear are:
height loss, forward bent posture, back pain or fractures that occur easily. Bones are regenerated
continuously, the aged bone is destroyed as the new bone is created. As the body ages, and the process
of old bones being broken down occurs at a quicker rate than new bone being formed, this process
decreases bone mass. The chances of developing osteoporosis is influenced by the amount of bone
mass developed in adolescent years. An elevated bone mass at peak level indicates the amount of bone
present and indicates that you have less chances to develop osteoporosis with age (Mayo Clinic,
2014).
Bone Density Test
A common test used to determine the health of bones is a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test. This test
can detect osteoporosis, risks for fractures, and assess treatment response. A dual energy x ray

Summary Of The Evil Genius
There s a saying in ballet that says Put Swan Lake on the billboard, and they will come. This certainly
seemed the case tonight as the Bolshoi Ballet has kicked off its two week stay at the Koch Theater
with a week a Swan Lakes. Well ... I think many of the audience were shocked, to say the least, that in
the Bolshoi/Grigorovich version, there s no swan and no lake. In fact, audience reaction was muted,
and it made for some awkward moments when the audience was dead silent and the dancers decided
to come out for another bow. Grigorovich decided to make the whole ballet a vision conjured up by
the Evil Genius. The Evil Genius mirrors Siegfried in all his dancing and actions, and swans appear
from behind a curtain. In the third act a sextet of black swans and Odile are also conjured up by the
Evil Genius from behind this curtain. This robs the ballet of any meaningful romantic connection
between Odette and Siegfried. It s all a vision of the Evil Genius, remember? And in the final act,
there s no reconciliation or forgiveness between Odette and Siegfried. The Evil Genius again whisks
his swans behind the curtain. The end. Many iconic moments are gone: Odette doesn t make the flying
entrance. Instead, she s already behind the curtain, and has to exit the stage before re entering. The
entrance of the swans is also gone: they re already onstage behind that stupid curtain, then a few
minutes later they re enter with the familiar flying arabesque sequence. This production

Comparing Beowulf And Hrothgar s
In Beowulf, both Hrothgar, king of the Spear Danes, and Beowulf, the Geatish hero are attributed in
their society as kings. These two characters role in their society is a major focus. Both Beowulf and
Hrothgar have ruled as king effectively. Beowulf and Hrothgar s job performances and understanding
of their duties, responsibilities, and privileges differ. Hrothgar, a legendary Danish king, clearly
comprehends his responsibility to protect his country and its people. Beowulf, a previous Geatish hero
who has recently been inaugurated as king, is unsure of what his duties are. During the story, Beowulf
transforms from a great warrior to a king. This maturation involves more than just physical strength.

Assembling In The Iliad

Assembling in The Iliad
(Holding councils of war or holding assemblies) Every great war in history has been determined, to
some extent, by the powerful strategies executed by one party of the war. These strategies , most of the
time, are not the brainchild of one individual, but more or less a group of people collaborating toward
one strategy effective enough to turn the tides of battle. The most effective way for important leaders
to voice their opinions for their next endeavor is achieved through the use of assemblies. Assemblies
were very important to the armies in the Trojan War, as both sides had great power, meaning that
cunning strategy would be the winning factor for one of the parties involved in the Trojan War.
However, assemblies held during the Trojan War were more one sided toward the authoritative figures
rather than a true collaboration between leaders and wise men. These assemblies follow a simple
pattern: a leader calls out to the army to form an assembly when he sees it fit; then, the leaders and
wise men then collaborate and voice their opinions on the matter at hand; and finally, the figure with
the highest authority in the assembly decides what to do next as a result of the assembly. The assembly
begins with an important leader calling for one when he sees it fit to form one. For example, an
assembly was called by Achilles due to concerns from the plague in Book 1; it was revealed that

Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do. stated by

Although the script was written in the 1960 s when the election was between Nixon and Kennedy it

ones from the past. However, Gore Vidal gives his character William Russell a set of morals. He also

Beauty And Similes In Annie Dillard s Journey In Tinker Creek
When needing to retreat, Annie Dillard goes to Tinker Creek and immerses herself in nature. During
one of these trips, she has a snippet of a revelation, which makes her see beauty and ugliness in
harmony and see the world as meaningful; even though there is sorrow. In this passage, Dillard uses
the symbolism of a maple key and similes to explain its descend as something beautiful, seeing the
positive in the negative. When she is at Tinker Creek, she uses words like lost, sunk which shows the
lack of understanding as she looks towards Tinker Mountain. All of a sudden, she sees what looks like
a Martian spaceship . She uses a simile to describe what she sees as otherworldly or magical because a
Martian spaceship is not from this world. She describes that it flashed borrowed light like a propeller .
As the object is coming down, it brings with it light or a revelation. She goes on to portray it as
pirouetting and twirling , words which are often associated with ballet and are viewed by most people
as beautiful. Her experience with this beautiful, otherworldly object is a door that allows her to see
this as part of the beauty in the world.
When the object falls, she finds it in the grass and she later identifies it as a simple maple key. Dillard
identifies the key after describing her experience because she was unsure of what it was as it was
falling but knew after had fallen. The maple key, which usually is in pairs falls single. She greets the

Science And The Art Of Science
A couple of years ago my daughter, who will graduate with a degree in biology from UC Santa Cruz
this June, shared a pivotal quote with me. The quote, by nature philosopher Vladimir Nabokov, states,
There is a high ridge where the mountainside of scientific knowledge joins the opposite slope of
artistic imagination; where precision of poetry and the art of science can meet. She said it reminded
her of all the years she watched me with my students, exploring and healing wild places. This was,
and is, one of the most profound compliments I have ever received. There is a multitude of ways to
approach teaching students about our Earth, some technical, some artistic, some spiritual, but to effect
lasting change, one has to touch on all three. Throughout my 23 years as an environmental educator, I
have often said my true goal is to guide students toward a love and desire to protect our planet and
each other the science they learn is a happy side effect. But side effects can have lasting effects, and
make no mistake the science is critical. Hooking students emotionally, though, opens their minds to
the science, to a desire to know the world around them, to a willingness to absorb the science because
it explains what they love. As educators, volunteers, and docents, our challenge is to create that high
ridge for students, to teach natural history in an imaginative, artistic way one that presents science as a
form of poetry from the heart. It is hard to ignore the cries

The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay
The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s Iliad
they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries
and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient
Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times,
the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of
Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of the
Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor
Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred
years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection
was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His
innovative idea was to uncover the present day Games in 1900 in his local Paris, however appoints
from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to
1896 and have Athens serve as the main host.
The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close by city of Elis, won the
stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. This was the only athletic competition of the Olympics for the
initial 13 Olympic games or until 724 BC. The Olympic Games, initially originated to respect Zeus,

Magical Realism In Like Water For Chocolate
The title of this novel, Like Water for Chocolate, is also a simile for the burning passion Tita and
Pedro had for each other. In Latin countries, like water for chocolate mean to boil water to the right

Despite their true love for each other, Tita and Pedro had to restrain their feelings under the eyes of
society. Their love is like the boiling point of water.

camouflaged into the mundane setting. Magical realism has brought this forbidden love to its greatest

John Hubner s Last Chance in Texas focuses on the boys and girls who go to Giddings State School to
establish that they aren t just criminals. The story doesn t just focus on the students lives, but students
who are trying to reform by transitioning from an unstable environment to a stable one. Giddings State
School has two sections based on gender roles that demonstrate the students properly transitioning
into a citizen. In the first section of the book, boys are not supposed to express their feelings because
its culture is frowned upon, so it takes longer for boys to relive and move forward in their recovery. In
the second part of the book, it s shorter because girls are socially acceptable so it takes less time to

Analysis of Robert Frost s Desert Places Essay
Analysis of Robert Frost s Desert Places
Robert Frost s Desert Places is a testament to the harrowing nature of solidarity. By subjecting the
narrator to the final moments of daylight on a snowy evening, an understanding about the nature of
blank spaces and emptiness becomes guratively illuminated. The poem s loneliness has the ability to
transcend nature and drill a hole through the mind of the narrator so that all hope for relationships with
man and nature are abandoned.
In the first stanza, ?snow? and ?night? are juxtaposed to create a sense of loneliness and emptiness.

The dramatic realization of the absence of objects during the brief moments of sunset on a snowy
evening comes fast under the scrutiny of the narrator, and profound implications for him/her about the
desolate nature of his/her own loneliness and place in the world, as the passage of time puts his/her
place into perspective. The time and speed at which the surroundings becomes enveloped becomes
instrumental to the desolation resented throughout the poem. Had the evening been observed earlier in
the day, the finality of the blankness would have been cancelled out by more vivid visualizations about
the shape of the leaves, colors illuminated in the light, and numbers of specific animals scurrying
about in the open field. However, the simplistic nature of the language presents no comfort or
description by its dry context. The narrator speaks of ?empty spaces? (13) paralleled with the dry
nature of the language to create the loneliness of the poem. Alone with his/her thoughts, the narrator
focuses on how the nothingness affects his/her view of the world. Nature is represented as the creative
force that breeds the nothingness. The poem indicates, ?The woods around it have it?it is theirs./ All

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pope Urban II
Pope Urban II delivers a touching an inspiring speech that is meant to highlight the importance of
trusting in God in one attempt to overcome their challenges. The pope delivers the message at a time
when there is turmoil and the country had been subjected to chaos to misunderstanding by the kings
and rulers at the time. In his speech the religious leader employs a prayer in their attempt to convince
their followers to embark of the dangerous journey and rescue what belongs to them based on the
motivation of bible scriptures.
One motivation that the pope uses in luring Christians into the idea of fighting in the holy land is
based in the fact that God has given them power unlike other nations to defeat their enemies (Jan). In
his speech, Urban II also mentions their uniqueness in the ability to possess courage, and humility
means that their God favors them and they do not need to worry as they plan to tackle and overcome
the enemy in war. In the motivational speech, the pope further reminds the city members that they
need to be aware that God is with them and they should not worry in the battle (Jan). ... Show more

Online Privacy In The United States
The principle of freedom in the United States of America has always tied with one s private matters.
But with technology advancing at such a rapid rate, the idea of privacy might soon become something

derestrict itself from the bounds of an individual s personal matters online. In reception, many
Americans feel that their natural given rights are being exploited. They feel that the government has

Sometimes, in order for an individual s own safety, sacrifices have to be made. The government has
full justification to arbitrate the people s online private matters because it is necessary for the
protection of the country and its citizens. One example comes from an underground network called the
deep web . The deep web could be described as the wild west of the internet. Numerous amounts of
information are posted on the deep web where normal search engines like Google or Bing do not
show. According to Tyler Biscontini, a writer for the Salem Press, the deep web is useful for many
different reasons. It provides anonymity to anyone using it. Special software must be downloaded in
order to run the deep web. This is mainly because the deep web s main feature is that the user s ip

significant greater amount of information that is not accessible on a normal browser. Journalist
especially, use the deep web in order to dive into research and scouting topics for future stories.
However, the deep web can also be a dangerous place. Many individuals take advantage of its features
for wrongdoing. Due to the anonymity that comes with accessing the deep web, it is hard to track
down individuals performing the crimes. Lev Grossman, a writer for Time Magazine, describes an

Biotechnology is the application of scientific techniques and exploitation of biological processes used
to improve and modify animals, plants and microorganisms to enhance their value through genetic
manipulation. Over time, advances in the field of molecular biology has allowed scientists to take a
particular gene from any organism, including, bacteria, viruses, plants or animals, and introduce those
genes into another organism. An organism transformed using genetic engineering techniques is known
as transgenic organism (Independent learning center, 2012). This paper discusses the positive and
negative effects of genetically engineered organisms in agricultural applications and the Canadian
regulation or legislation that relates to this issue.
Many farmers in Canada have welcomed major crop plants produced by genetic engineering. Four
major transgenic crops including canola, corn, soy and sugar beet have been approved for commercial
production in Canada (Canada Agency, 2015). Transgenic organisms offer a range of benefits in the
agricultural applications. Over many years, transgenic organisms have helped increase crop
productivity by introducing drought tolerance and disease resistance to crops. Today, scientist has
been able to select genes for disease resistant from other organism and relocate them to essential
crops. For example, in the 1980, researchers from University of Hawaii teamed up with Cornell
University to develop a papaya cultivar resistant to papaya

Taking notes at the Church s meeting
Taking notes at church s meeting would be reason number one why I want to get the 2 in 1 computer. I
would like something not as big but not as small either. The laptop I currently have it is 17 and I do
not like to take it because I considered too big and thick to being carrying it around. I also have a table
but it is 7 . I use this tablet to take notes but it is too small, and it doesn t have a keyboard, making it
difficult to me to take notes. Besides the only program that it has to take notes is not good and it doesn
t let me install Microsoft Word or any Microsoft product to it. ... Show more content on

Individual Level And Systemic Level Of Opportunity...
Introduction Recognizing opportunities is a process that is necessary and will never be avoided by
entrepreneurs that are looking to create value for their stakeholders. In order to understand more about
the definition of opportunity recognition, it will be sensible to first get to know the meaning of
opportunity. According to (Baron, 2006) Opportunity can be interpreted as a perceived means of
generating economic value such as profit that has not been exploited and is not currently exploited by
others . Therefore, opportunity recognition can be defined as the process when individuals came to a
conclusion that they have discovered an opportunity. Differences between individual level and
systemic level of opportunity recognition There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the individual level theory emphasizes on how it occurs and who are the individuals who do it
compared to whether or not it occurs. Therefore, researchers are more likely to give explanations
about why some individuals are more likely to go after opportunity for financial gain (McMullen
Shepherd, 2006). At the individual level, there are basically two reasons why they discover the
opportunities which are they have better access to information and they have well defined cognitive
capabilities. One of the reasons why individuals have better access to information is because of job
function. For example, people who are working in the field of natural sciences and engineering are
more likely to see the new venture opportunities because the nature of these jobs give easier access to
technology and knowledge. On the other hand, for cognitive capabilities, there are two groups of it.
The first group which is absorptive capacity claims that previous knowledge provide an absorptive
capacity that ease the collection of information. The second group that intensifies the entrepreneurial
discovery is the ability of individuals to categorize information, ability to see causal links and ability
to assess assumptions and information correctly (Fuduric,

Adaptation Of The African Queen
This is a British American Movie that was acted in 1951 and this was an adaptation of the novel The
African Queen that was written in 1935 by C.S Forester. The director of this film is John Huston and
the producers were John Woolf and Sam Spiegel. The characters Samuel Sayer and his sister Rose are
missionaries from Britain who have gone on a mission in Kungdu, a village of German s colony in
East Africa just when the First World War had started. All the supplies and mails are delivered by a
small boat that uses steam and it is named African Queen and it is driven by a rough Canadian who
has an intolerable behavior and whose name is Charllie. He warns these two missionaries that there is
war between Germany and Britain but they choose not to escape but rather remain and thus witness
how the Germans burn down completely their mission center and capture all the villagers into slavery.
Samuel decides to show protest against this evil acts and he is eventually captured and beaten brutally
by the German soldiers and this is the eventual cause of his death (Huston Agee). There is a lot of
enmity displayed by the Germans against the British and to the Africans and thus it is suicidal to pass
through or near a German fortress. Everything is just too dangerous in this movie especially where the
Germans are concerned. When Rose and Chrilie decide to navigate to the Ulanga River, they have to
pass through a German fortress where they are harassed in addition to the three sets of

  • 2. Dormant Commerce Clause Essay Can you briefly explain what the dormant commerce clause is? The negative commerce clause, also known as the dormant commerce clause is a doctrine established by the U.S. Supreme Court, limiting individual states of the United States from passing legislation that inappropriately discriminates against interstate commerce. The dormant commerce clause limits the power of individual states to legislate on such matters and is not an express clause in the U.S. Constitution (AMAR, K. 2007). Why would dormant commerce clause apply to business? The Dormant Commerce Clause is the belief that local and state laws are undemocratic if the state places an unwarranted encumbrance on local commerce, moreover, even if Congress has not acted on behalf of its commerce power it lies dormant (Chemerinsky, E., n.d.). An example would be, in the case of C A Carbone, Inc. v. Town of Clarkstown, where the Court overturned an apparently alleged town law that required all solid waste be treated at a privately ... • 3. The Effects Of Stress On Stress And Health According to a National Institute of Mental Health article on stress and health, stress is defined any change in the environment that requires your body to react and adjust in response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Not all stress is bad, though. In fact, stress responses can be life saving in necessary situations. The chemicals and hormones released during a stress response prepare the body to face a threat or flee to safety, this is commonly known as the fight or flight response. When faced with a dangerous situation, your heart rate increases, you breathe faster, your muscles tense, and your brain uses more oxygen, all functions necessary for survival (Brannon et al., 2014). Nonetheless, those same chemicals that can be life saving in short bursts are harmful if the response is prolonged, as stress suppresses bodily functions that aren t needed for immediate survival (Brannon et al., 2014). Further, your immunity is lowered and your digestive and reproductive systems stop working normally (McEwen et al., 2011). Feelings normally related with chronic stress and an overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol, are anxiousness, nervousness, distraction, worry, and depression (Brannon et al., 2014). Additionally, stomachache is common due to a slowing in the emptying of the stomach. Increase in appetite is another physical symptom of stress, which can lead to weight gain. In Tim O brien s The Things They Carried, the American soldiers of the Vietnam War carry much more than the weight of their equipment, much more than souvenirs or good luck charms or letters from home. They carried within themselves the intransitive burdens of fear, of cowardice, of love, of loneliness, of anger, of confusion. Most of all, they carry the truth of what happened to them in the war a truth that only those who fought in the jungles and the mountains and the marshes of Vietnam can ever understand. These men can share their stories; but all that s all they are to everyone else: stories. The Things They Carried is a story made up of stories about how the men carried their war stories and their truths during the war and after the war. Ronald Reagan and Communism Ronald Reagan and Communism Introduction Critics remarked that Ronald Reagan tended to perceive things in terms of black and white, and his attitude toward Soviet concerns was no different. The organizing principle of Reagan s defense and foreign polices was anti Communism, and Soviet policy to him pervaded every part of the globe. Each of Reagan s predecessors, from 1945 onwards, had been occupied with the possible Soviet threat towards America but Reagan was obsessed with it. Unlike his predecessors, too, he saw no possibility of compromise with the USSR, simply discounting communism as a sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages are even now being written (Dallek, 129). Interestingly enough, Harper s editor Lewis H. Lapham commented that Reagan s anti Soviet rhetoric may have reflected concerns about his own country. America was suffering from big government, atheism, and relaxed moral standards. America saw in the USSR what it most fears in itself... It is estimated that there are 50 million new cases of dengue fever each year worldwide. A portion of these cases can develop into sever infections, namely dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, these sever infections are also associated with increased mortality rates. Approximately 12,000 deaths each year are contributed to dengue, and of these deaths the victims are mainly children (Bouzid et. al. 2014). The average global temperature is predicted to rise 2.0 4.5˚C by the year 2100, which would have significant impact on vector borne diseases. The temperature range for dengue is between 14 °C and 40 °C. During the level Remember No Russian of the popular first person shooter videogame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the player assumes the role of a deep cover CIA agent, Joseph Allen, who is attempting to gather Intel on a highly dangerous Russian ultranationalist terrorist group. What started as a simple intel mission led to Agent Allen participating in an armed plot to massacre all the people in a Russian airport. As the elevator doors were opening, Vladimir Makarov reminds the player and the other gunmen not to speak any Russian throughout the scene. As the terrorists relentlessly fired their machineguns, blood splattered all over the airport as civilians fled in terror from the oncoming slaughter. Amidst this bloodbath, some civilians displayed altruism as they attempted to drag the injured to safety; however, those self less efforts were trampled on by more shots and more deaths. • 23. Communism Socialist And Communism Part I proved what should be obvious: That governments are composed of groups of people and that socialist and communist governments are groups of people who collectively and directly own or regulate the means of production. Thus, the Leftist talking point that failed socialist and communist regimes of the past and present weren t really socialist and communist has been shown to be a lie. In this part we will demonstrate that the practical implications of this deception are dysfunctional in the extreme because their programme can only be implemented by force of arms and governments never give up power voluntarily. It can be shown via the logic of the dictionary definitions that governments are merely groups of people with the authority to govern a particular region, state or nation. And that socialist and communist governments are merely groups of people who collectively own or regulate the means of production. One is supposed to ignore the obvious and instead pretend that a group of people collectively and directly owning or regulating the means of production is some other vague entity but not a government. The socialists will also insist that these reality defying facts absolve them of any responsibility for the mass murder and repression by the people collectively and directly owning or regulating the means of production. And why would they try to deceive the world over something like that? How are the Socialist s grandiose plans for a Worker s Paradise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Osteoporosis And How It Begins Osteoporosis and How It Begins Common fractures that occur in the spine, hips, and wrist are frequently related to osteoporosis. Sometimes mild stressors such as coughing or bending over may cause a fracture of brittle and weakened bones related to osteoporosis. Bone is live tissue that is continuously damaged and repaired. Out with the Old, In With the New Osteoporosis takes place when the removal rate of the old bone tissue is faster than the formation of new bone. Normally in the beginning stages of bone loss there are no symptoms exhibited. When weakness has developed in the bones due to osteoporosis, some signs and symptoms that appear are: height loss, forward bent posture, back pain or fractures that occur easily. Bones are regenerated continuously, the aged bone is destroyed as the new bone is created. As the body ages, and the process of old bones being broken down occurs at a quicker rate than new bone being formed, this process decreases bone mass. The chances of developing osteoporosis is influenced by the amount of bone mass developed in adolescent years. An elevated bone mass at peak level indicates the amount of bone present and indicates that you have less chances to develop osteoporosis with age (Mayo Clinic, 2014). • 26. Summary Of The Evil Genius There s a saying in ballet that says Put Swan Lake on the billboard, and they will come. This certainly seemed the case tonight as the Bolshoi Ballet has kicked off its two week stay at the Koch Theater with a week a Swan Lakes. Well ... I think many of the audience were shocked, to say the least, that in the Bolshoi/Grigorovich version, there s no swan and no lake. In fact, audience reaction was muted, and it made for some awkward moments when the audience was dead silent and the dancers decided to come out for another bow. Grigorovich decided to make the whole ballet a vision conjured up by the Evil Genius. The Evil Genius mirrors Siegfried in all his dancing and actions, and swans appear from behind a curtain. In the third act a sextet of black swans and Odile are also conjured up by the Evil Genius from behind this curtain. This robs the ballet of any meaningful romantic connection between Odette and Siegfried. It s all a vision of the Evil Genius, remember? And in the final act, there s no reconciliation or forgiveness between Odette and Siegfried. The Evil Genius again whisks his swans behind the curtain. The end. Many iconic moments are gone: Odette doesn t make the flying entrance. Instead, she s already behind the curtain, and has to exit the stage before re entering. The entrance of the swans is also gone: they re already onstage behind that stupid curtain, then a few minutes later they re enter with the familiar flying arabesque sequence. This production ... • 29. Assembling In The Iliad Ethan Medley English 2332 877 Professor Brooks 28 September 2017 Assembling in The Iliad (Holding councils of war or holding assemblies) Every great war in history has been determined, to some extent, by the powerful strategies executed by one party of the war. These strategies , most of the time, are not the brainchild of one individual, but more or less a group of people collaborating toward one strategy effective enough to turn the tides of battle. The most effective way for important leaders to voice their opinions for their next endeavor is achieved through the use of assemblies. Assemblies were very important to the armies in the Trojan War, as both sides had great power, meaning that cunning strategy would be the winning factor for one of the parties involved in the Trojan War. However, assemblies held during the Trojan War were more one sided toward the authoritative figures rather than a true collaboration between leaders and wise men. These assemblies follow a simple pattern: a leader calls out to the army to form an assembly when he sees it fit; then, the leaders and wise men then collaborate and voice their opinions on the matter at hand; and finally, the figure with the highest authority in the assembly decides what to do next as a result of the assembly. The assembly begins with an important leader calling for one when he sees it fit to form one. • 34. Science And The Art Of Science A couple of years ago my daughter, who will graduate with a degree in biology from UC Santa Cruz this June, shared a pivotal quote with me. The quote, by nature philosopher Vladimir Nabokov, states, There is a high ridge where the mountainside of scientific knowledge joins the opposite slope of artistic imagination; where precision of poetry and the art of science can meet. She said it reminded her of all the years she watched me with my students, exploring and healing wild places. This was, and is, one of the most profound compliments I have ever received. There is a multitude of ways to approach teaching students about our Earth, some technical, some artistic, some spiritual, but to effect lasting change, one has to touch on all three. Throughout my 23 years as an environmental educator, I have often said my true goal is to guide students toward a love and desire to protect our planet and each other the science they learn is a happy side effect. But side effects can have lasting effects, and make no mistake the science is critical. Hooking students emotionally, though, opens their minds to the science, to a desire to know the world around them, to a willingness to absorb the science because it explains what they love. As educators, volunteers, and docents, our challenge is to create that high ridge for students, to teach natural history in an imaginative, artistic way one that presents science as a form of poetry from the heart. The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of the Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His innovative idea was to uncover the present day Games in 1900 in his local Paris, however appoints from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to 1896 and have Athens serve as the main host. The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close by city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. Genetic Engineering And The Canadian Regulation Biotechnology is the application of scientific techniques and exploitation of biological processes used to improve and modify animals, plants and microorganisms to enhance their value through genetic manipulation. Over time, advances in the field of molecular biology has allowed scientists to take a particular gene from any organism, including, bacteria, viruses, plants or animals, and introduce those genes into another organism. An organism transformed using genetic engineering techniques is known as transgenic organism (Independent learning center, 2012). This paper discusses the positive and negative effects of genetically engineered organisms in agricultural applications and the Canadian regulation or legislation that relates to this issue. Many farmers in Canada have welcomed major crop plants produced by genetic engineering. Four major transgenic crops including canola, corn, soy and sugar beet have been approved for commercial production in Canada (Canada Agency, 2015).
