From the beginning, we learn that Frank, who is a father of six, is extremely narrow minded and
selfish. He has a hard time understanding his children s thoughts and feelings, which is unusual for
the average father. Like Frank, the narrator in Raymond Carvers short story Cathedral demonstrates
his inability to understand others thoughts and emotions because of his own narrow minded, selfish
thoughts and actions. This is portrayed throughout the beginning of the story. First, we are shown
his prejudicial thoughts towards the blind man simply because he is blind. He then expresses his
selfishness as well as a hint of jealousy when he comments on the relationship between the blind
man and his wife, while displaying an overall negative attitude about the man s visit. Despite his
negative characterization, much like many other intriguing dynamic characters, the narrator comes
realize his own blindness towards the end of the story. This encourages him to be more self aware,
as well as sympathetic to others and the world around him.
Raymond Carver chose to make the narrator a dynamic character to successfully illustrate how
many people, at some point in their life, will realize a certain, unsettling conflict they have within
themselves and learn from it. The narrator being a dynamic character, symbolizes those members in

cathedral being on the TV right in front of him, he cannot verbally explain what it is. This creates

This movie is a period piece, at the beginning of the 1900 s. This is five years before the first
automobile comes into play in this town. In this town everyone knows everyone and everyone has
basically the same routine. Same paper route, same train route. There are many churches in this
town, a mill, a little main street with post office and city hall. Just a basic small town, similar to
mine (Crandall). Mrs. Gibbs garden and Mrs. Webb s garden are similar.
This is the first play I have seen conducted in this sort of way. The narrator carries you through this
story. He does more of the telling of the town, and uses the characters to show you the town. In the
beginning the story revolves around the Gibbs and Webb families. At first glance you see into the

Barlow Sanderson Company
The Journey of Barlow, Sanderson, and Co. A lone yellow stagecoach tracks across the Missouri
sands, pulled by two exhausted, well groomed horses. The sharp crack of a whip is heard, and
shouts of Giddyup! echo from the coachman. Inside, a passenger sits patiently, a stack of mail
and goods beside him. A cloud of dust rises up behind the coach, and the constant motion of the
wheels kicks up small rocks that fly like bullets. Before the brisk expansion of railroads in the
West in the 1870 1880s, this was a common sight. Stagecoaches would carry passengers, mail, and
freight from town to town, and one of the most famous stagecoach company was Barlow,

In 1866, Barlow and Sanderson s dreams of expansion began to solidify into reality. The
company expanded westward, moving their headquarters to Junction City, Colorado. By 1867,
the two tycoons had a number of short routes such as Fort Larned, Kansas, to Fort Lyon,
Colorado, and Bent s Fort to Pueblo, Colorado. They also decided to change the name to the
Barlow and Sanderson Company. By 1869, Barlow and Sanderson were focusing their resources
on expanding their routes in Colorado due to the steadily rising mining industry. This was easily
accomplished, and in July, 1870, the Company bought the Denver and Santa Fe stage line and
renamed it to the Southern Overland Mail and Express. Later that year, they again moved their
headquarters, this time to Denver. Thus, by the 1870s, this company controlled the mail route
between Denver and Santa Fe, and operated a tangled cobweb of lines that linked the San Luis
Valley and the San Juan mountains to the railroads. This allowed for better communication
throughout Colorado, as well as improved transportation for people and goods. Naturally, this was
