The Common Pattern Of Alternating Extinctions And Radiations
Extinctions and Radiations

The common pattern of alternating extinctions and radiations has been done through biodiversity
studies which studies the different organisms of species living on earth and where they live. In
Stilwell (2003) journal, Palaeocene faunas are characterized by a perceived rapid evolutionary
radiation involving many new taxa at both genus and species level. Stilwell stated Molluscs living
at the beginning of tertiary period after the K T extinction event was the beginning of modern fauna.
There was research that saw the decimation of scores of marine organisms. Mollusc groups were
mentioned (e.g. Ammonites, Belemnites Rudistid and Trigoniid Bivalves), (Stilwell, 2003).
In Stilwell s research journal, Austral Palaeocene Molluscs focuses on the composition of faunas
and patterns of evolution, it shows diversity and riches. The Southern Hemisphere show the break
up of Supercontinent Gondwana and also changes in oceanic circulation and climate. In the
northern Hemisphere shows major diversity changes in the Marine Realm.
In a journal written by Racki, it was mentioned, with the enlargement and nitrification most likely
will lead to the loss of deep water niches and step by step siliceous faunas go through severe non
selective losses during the end Permian mass extinction, (Racki, 1999). All because of sudden

Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing...
Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing Countries: The Role of Local Community
Support and Involvement
Over the last two decades, a consensus has gradually emerged that long term conservation depends
on understanding and support from those closely connected to the environment and its resources
(Shine, Klemm, 1999.) Several international environmental conventions have reflected this
consensus by establishing a legal basis to involve local communities, especially those in developing
countries, in their implementation. Recent changes in the focus of the Ramsar Convention on
Wetlands are consistent with this global trend towards emphasizing the importance of community
support and involvement. Adopted in Ramsar, Iran on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By contrasting and comparing case studies in developing countries with varying degrees of wetland
conservation success, it is clear that local community involvement and support of conservation is
critical to success. Acknowledging this, those sites with unsuccessful wetland conservation have
begun to plan initiatives to promote community participation and support.
This study focuses solely on wetland conservation in developing countries, where lifestyles and lack
of government capacity make community support and involvement in wetland conservation
policies and practices particularly important. People in the developing world are more closely
connected to the environment than those in developed countries. Since they rely more directly on
the extraction of natural resources and use of natural services for their sustenance and economy,
their lifestyles have a more direct impact on the immediate ecosystem. Given that all countries, but
especially developing countries...need to enhance their internal capacity to manage their
environmental protection and sustainable development, a lack of national and state government
capacity results in a greater need for the support and involvement of local communities in wetland
conservation (Susskind, et al. 2002). Since developing country governments may not have the
finances, institutions, or knowledge to strictly enforce their wetland conservation policies,
community policy support is

My First Ride At Night
It was eleven o clock at night. The rain showered my face as I ran through dirt and gravel
towards my step father s familiar police car, and with each step I took, rain water splashed in
every direction. I hurriedly jumped into the lifelessly black passenger seat of the police car. This
was my first time sitting a cruiser, and it was much more petite than I had expected. Studying the
inside of the cruiser, I noticed that the interior of the car was entirely the blackest of black,
completely colorless and boring. I was eager to go on my first ride along. I could not help but to
imagine what I may witness. Although I knew the chances of something exciting happening were
slim, I held on to that miniscule chance of having an exciting night. My step father, Andy, jumped
into the driver seat of his policecar, which appeared to be quite sizable compared to the passenger
seat that I resided in. He turned on the computer that rested in between he and I as I glanced over
at the computer as curiosity had struck about what was on it. There was an assortment of letters
and numbers; I had not the slightest clue as to what they meant. The only thing I knew, was that
the assortment was a series of police codes. Andy informed me that the first thing he does, at the
beginning of each shift, is to get gas because he is not allowed to get bellow a half of a tank for
safety reasons. As we drove to a Duchess Shop, I looked out of the window, studying the cars that
we passed. Each car

Personal Statement On Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility is holding you accountable for all your actions and decisions. Being
personally responsible means you take ownership of what you do in and with your life. This
means from the time you wake up until you go to bed at night, your life is your responsibility and
yours alone. Your values, morals, and beliefs are all contributing factors in how you view being
personally responsible. If you have been raised and taught to believe that you should consider your
actions at all times, then responsibilitybecomes second nature to you . For some it may be a little
more difficult to grasp this concept. What we need to remember is that personal responsibility is
important in every aspect of life . In collegeone has to take personal responsibility very seriously. I
began my college education in my early thirties. I had been out of school for quite some time and
knew that I faced a real challenge. I had to purpose in my mindthat I was going to do whatever it
took to reach my academic goals. Starting out I faced several disadvantages , from lack of
financial aid, to self doubt. I had to take charge of what was my dream and find a way to make it
happen. I went to the college after obtaining my GED and just laid it all out on the line. Once I
received my first class schedule I felt I was on my way. That very first class night I had an eye
opening moment. I realized that this was going to take a lot of hard work and determination. I
found out quickly that not everyone

The Godfather, The Exorcist, And The Silence Of The Lambs
The Godfather, The Exorcist, and The Silence of the Lambs are three films that are often given
the title greatest of all time in their respective genre, for very good reason. Each film consists of
scenes that are crafted so unforgettably that the scenes leave each viewer with a sense of awe,
shock, and horror when each scene is carefully examined. The Godfather, distributed in 1972 by
Paramount Pictures, was directed by Francis Ford Coppolawho in an interview said in regards to
his filmmaking that If you don t take a risk then how are you going to make something really
beautiful, that hasn t been seen before? (1). The Godfather certainly presented cinema with
iconic and memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen largely due to the
new and risky ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather s narrative. Similarly, The
Exorcist chilled the bones of audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling
demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema. The
scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large
majority of American audiences who came from religious backgrounds where demonic
possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face to face with The
Devil, Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme s 1991
classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene very memorable, particularly when

Community Policing Defined
Community policing
Community policing is defined as a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which
support the systematic use of partnerships and problem solving techniques, to proactively address
the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and
fear of crime according to the U.S. Department of Justice. (U. S. Department of Justice). In other
words the main goal of community policing is the allocation of various police agencies/staff to
particular areas around the community so they become familiar with its inhabitants and lifestyle.
This style of policing attempts to modify the department through a system called de
bureaucratization and has four major goals to meet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Assigning key officers to permanent locations, Chicago officers could gain greater knowledge
of the community problems and how to solve them responsibly. Community policing displays
the basic elements of policing and it has some helped shape recent policing strategies such as
Problem Oriented Policing and Zero Tolerance Policing. The most important obvious difference
from other policing strategies is that it represents a major change in the basic role of a police
officer. Traditionally police officers were used to only fight crime, with community policing it
broaden their role to order maintenance, conflict resolution and social and physical disorders
within the home. Problem oriented policing main focus is based on law, order and fear
problems. Unlike Community policing, POP opts that officers should address particular problems
and develop creative responses to each one. Instead of a crime fighter image officers under the
POP ideology function as problem solvers, planners, and community advocates. POP and
Community Policing are very similar in their police tactics however, the newly accepted Zero
tolerance Policy is very different. It is characterized by interventions that aggressively enforce
criminal/civil laws and that are conducted for the purpose of restoring order to communities. This
theory believes through harsh and aggressive enforcement of laws, crime will cause the community
to be more inclined to care which will

This article focuses mainly on how the National Federation of Independent Business vs Sebelius
case impacted both healthcare law and constitutional law. There are also some opinion about how
the ruling was mostly impacted by consideration of its healthcare impact or constitutional law, as
conceived by different parties. Healthcare law considers issues of coverage, accessibility, cost,
accountability, and the quality of healthcare service. All these must be considered when making

They have a long, flat mouth in the center of their body. They usually inhabit flat surfaces in the
water, and can be found on rubble or soft substrates and can be find at depths from 1 meter to 25

that can kill other coral and fish if threatened. The main source of nutrition the coral receives is a
symbiotic relationship with bacteria that live in it s mouth but it can kill and digest other
animals if needed, their tentacles will help feed the organism by pulling in small morsels of
food and bring it to the mouth of the coral. Mushroom coral can reproduce sexually or asexually,
if they reproduce sexually, sperm and eggs are released into the water, when the egg is fertilized
the larvae will settle on a substrate overnight. if it reproduces asexually then a new polyp will
grow off the parent and anchor itself via a stalk which gives the organism its name, when it gets
mature enough the stalk will dissolve and the new coral will sink to the bottom of the water and is
now mobile, it will now continue to grow and

The Theme Of Nature In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein was a groundbreaking novel into the horrors that humans can achieve.
It helped defined a genre, and gave a new meaning to the gothic novel line of books. Shelley came
up with the idea of Frankenstein during a bet with her fellow poet friends. Whomever could write
the best scary story won their competition, and this was how Frankensteinwas born. Shelley
included many themes in her creation of the story Frankenstein such as Family, Imagination,
Ambition, Education, and Nature.
Mary Shelley imbued all these themes into her story to create a connection from the characters to
her readers, for us to help understand her characters deeply. One feels a sense of connection with
the monster and Victor in this story. Shelley... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monster is almost a child, in amazement at the wonder of nature. The irony behind his love
of nature is clear because the monster himself is a violation of nature. Victor reversed nature
when he brought back something from the dead. The creature may be living, breathing, and
sentient but he is an abomination of nature. Shelley used her grief of losing her baby, to create
the monster in a way that makes him seem as if he is an infant and he has been rejected as an
infant by society and made out to be an evil monster (Britton, Abstract). The creature himself was
just born a man, he did not experience infanthood, he was just created. He was created and
immediately hated, and he could not understand why because he had the mind of an infant. He was
innocent until he was treated horribly. This is an example of human nature. Human nature is
hating something that is so different than you, just for being different. And human nature is shown
in all its ugliness in this story, for wherever the monster goes, there are people to chase him away
for being scary. This almost parallels the Rime of the Ancient Mariner in a sense. In the Ancient
Mariner, the Mariner harms nature and nature harms him right back. The theme is that you must
respect nature otherwise you will be killed by the one thing you defiled. And this is true of Victor
and his monster. He defiled nature, and the life of what he created, and nature came back to kill his
family and in the end, it killed Victor

Magical Realism In Catch Of A Death Foretold By Gabriel...
Magical Realism is, by definition, a story composed of primarily realistic events which are
enhanced by supernatural or magical events. Catch of a Death Foretold, a novel by Gabriel GarcГa
MГЎrquez, holds several occurrences that would classify the book as magical realism. The
realistic points of the book are easy to point out of course, a small town, two angry brothers, a
devastated fiancee etc... However, the magical realism lays in the details of the book. In the
crevices of his storyline, Marquez hides multiple magical components that he uses to remind the
reader of the magicwithin reality. For example, Bayardo San Roman returning to Angela after not
opening a single letter from her, Santiago dreaming of the rain that falls at the moment of his death,
and most protruding, everyone in the town knowing of Santiago s fate, besides himself. The idea of
anything like this happening is so unrealistic, that it blends seamlessly together to form an
interesting and wildly intriguing novel. When Bayardo leaves Angela because of her treason to
him, Angela picks up the habit of writing a letter a week to Bayardo, and continues to do so over
a period of 17 years. Angela must have written Bayardo over 850 letters over this period of time,
yet Bayardo claims to have never opened even one. Despite this, he somehow decides to return to
Angela and forgive her. You may ask yourself, how could this be? , and the answer lies within one
word: magic. Magic that is inserted so fluidly into

MGM Studios, Inc. V. Grokster Case
For many years illegal file sharing and music swapping has been going on. Two very popular
cases are the MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster case and the A M Records, Inc. v. Napster case.
Both cases differ in many ways however they also have similarities. A lot of music and other sorts

think of are the consequences that will be faced if they get caught. Not only is the distributor at
risk for getting caught but those of us that download the software illegally can be charged. Both

How Does Homer Use Figurative Language In The Odyssey
Within the Odyssey, Homer uses literary devices such as figurative language to express the theme
of the Odyssey. Figurative language helps with the development of theme because they are more

figurative language in the Odyssey to describe the themes of sacrifices and the love of home.

College Costs Are Out Of Control Essay
People with college degrees are paid 80% more than people with only a high school education.
When the college degree is from a more prestigious school, that percentage increases even further
(McArdle). Even President Barack Obama acknowledged this in a 2012 speech, saying that The
incomes of folks with a collegedegree are twice as high as those who don t have a high school
diploma (Lemann). While a college educationis a good investment for the long run, the cost of
college is not a positive. The price of goods has risen due to inflation over the past decade, but
during that time college increased drastically. The rates have nearly doubled, but the things that
students learn still remain the same. If students are paying so much more... Show more content on

The plan will help the state to reach its goal of helping 60 percent of Idahoans between the ages
of 25 and 34 complete a degree or certificate by 2020 (Mills). In addition, half the United States
already has, or is in the midst, of making statewide education systems that include college (Kingsley
and Vance). Not only is college becoming more common, but it would make sense that with more
students coming into college that the rates would be lower. However, colleges are not decreasing
costs, but instead increasing them, making tuition costs harder on students. The job market is
evolving, causing college to be essential to anyone that wants to pursue a job. In a 2012 speech,
President Barack Obama said that right now, the unemployment rate for Americans with a college
degree or more is about half the national average (Lemann). This shows that even with a college
degree, the job market is changing, causing many students to be unemployed.Yet at the same time,
people that have a college education are better off than those without one. Moreover, the current job
market is becoming more information based, which requires more literacy, math skills and critical
thinking. Since the United States is not fully prepared with an education system that only requires
kindergarten through 12th grade, the United States must outsource jobs overseas to have necessary
tasks be completed. This not only takes

Differences And Similarities Between Vinny And Joe-Boy
Have you ever had a friend who was mean to you and argued with you? Vinny and Joe Boy are
both characters in a story called The Ravine . They are best friends who live in Hawaii and go to a
ravine to cliff jump and swim. There was a boy who died there two weeks and one day before they
arrived. Joe Boy and Vinny are different in many ways and they are similar in some ways.
Vinny is weak because he couldn t stand up to his friends and say no. One example from the text
is, Vinny smashed his lips. He was so weak. Couldn t even say no. But if he d said, I can t go,
my mother won t like it. they would ve laughed him right off the island. No, he had to go. No

because he feels scared for Starlene. On page 7, it says She has no fear, Vinny thought, no fear at
all. Pleasepleaseplease,Starlene. I don t want to see you die. He feels very nervous about Starlene
jumping off the 50 foot ledge. On the other hand, Vinny is worried about Starlene jumping and
getting hurt. The author wrote, Vinny s stomach tingled just watching her. He couldn t imagine
what it must be like to be up there, especially if you were afraid of heights, like he was. Vinny is

The Negative Effects Of Media Violence In The Media
While viewing and looking at many articles about violence portrayed in the media, I noticed that
many violent images in the media such as movies, videogames, and music have inspired people to
commit large amounts of violent acts, such as committing assaults and murders. It is proven that
children can he affected by the violencein media, when they are at a small age. When adults, some
can be more aggressive than others, and some may commit more crimes than others. Over 1,000
case studies have proven that media violence can have negative effects on children. It increases

He has concluded that they went on their shooting rampage at Columbine High School after their
parents took away their video game privileges. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had a video game
addiction for years. They were addicted to watching the violence through their tv screens, and
when that was taken away from them, they snapped. The violence in video games today is too
much for a child. Yes, video game companies rate them specifically for one age, but does anyone
really follow that?
When you tune into the news, how many of their stories are actually good news, involving happy
events? Most of them today involve burglaries and break ins, shootings, killings, deaths and so on.
In reality, many believe that the media distorts crimes. Media, such as the news, gives the
impression that crime is increasing, and becoming more violent than it already is. Wilson, B.

start to develop fear and anxiety from the stories or images that are being portrayed. The media
is very selective when it comes to what it wants to show. For example, an individual news
channels can also choose what stories are told to the public. For example. Kathryn Steinle, who

Disconnection Essay
When people are feeling down or there is something wrong with them they tend to disconnect from
the world and go into one of their own. In this place they find comfort and safety and it is
somewhere that no one can bother them for the time being. I myself find comfort just lying in my
bed staring at the ceiling and drifting off in thought. For artiststhough, they are able to find this
comforting place in music. Blink 182, Linkin Park, and NAS are some of the famous artists that are
able to disconnect from the world through their songs. They are able to get all of there thoughts out
through music and the world has a chance to hear them.

about is you as a person and that is what he is going to judge you on in the end. The group became

The best example of feeling disconnected come from the lyrics of Blink 182 s quot;Adam s song

I have lived and seen the carelessness with which many take in the stories and serious sentiments

Influence Of Mass Media Essay
How big of a role does mass media play on societies everyday lives? Communities often conform

showing a better way to perform at certain tasks. From the way consumers shop to the new style or
fad going around mediaaffects it all. Mass mediaespecially affects the youth and teen because,

This trickles down and continues to their friends and family too. The best way to not be

Reflection About My Writing Course
At the end of this course, I feel that a lot has improved with my writing. When I first started this
course, I was struggling with a lot of writing mechanisms. One of the things was transition. I was
just writing without thinking of how to connect my thoughts. After completing numerous writing
assignments, I am fully confident with my ability to have a paperthat flows. Another thing that I
struggled with was organization. Although I still have a lot of improvement to make, I think this
aspect of my writinghas improved. One of the things that helped me immensely was creating an
outline before writing my paper. Another aspect of my writing that also improved has to do with

Having a career it is very important to make sure that you have benefits. As having benefits as a

time off and to be with your family. In every job that we people have, there are risk that come

Narcissistic Stereotypes
The youngest generation obsesses over gaining approval in a way unprecedented by the past. This
obsession stems from the increase of narcissistic attitudes found in children, including
overconfidence, a deep need for admiration, and a lack of empathy (Mayo Clinic Staff). The
skyrocketing growth of social networking and the increase in the prevalence of superficial
celebrities shown in the media only enhances narcissistic behaviors. However, these attitudes are
initially caused by the actions of parents. An occurring shift in parenting styles centers around
rewarding kids even when the child s amount of effort does not warrant praise. This type of award
system fosters narcissistic attitudes that affect how kids interact with their surroundings,... Show

The biggest influence of personality are childhood experiences and the way in which parents choose
to raise their kids. The shift in parenting styles contributes to the growing levels of narcissistic
attitudes presented in the youngest generation. Because of the shift in values, the media evolved to
highlight vain celebrities instead of focusing on the successes of brilliant, hard working people.
Social media takes away the emotional involvement in relationships and replaces those feelings
with shallow gratification that causes people to grow an unhealthy attachment to the social
network. Nothing can replace the convenience of social media, but if society changes the way it
views online relationships then the focus will shift from having online relationships to improving
interpersonal communication. Narcissism is a problem that can be fixed with healthy role models

Marcus Tullius Cicero s Speeches
Throughout the ages, leaders have spoken out during times of crisis to try and unite people.
Marcus Tullius Cicero and George W. Bush are no exception to this trope. In Cicero s first speech
against Catiline, he related the horrible crimes Catiline was planning to commit. During his tenure
in office, Bush experienced a terrorist event on September 11, 2001, when the world trade center
had been destroyed, and he addressed Congress on this matter nine days later. While Ciceros speech
entails an event that was foiled, Bush s speech provides facts and support in the aftermath of a
traumatic situation. In this essay, I am going to compare the rhetorical devices implemented by

Cicero and Bush have analogous ethos and pathos, as they were both leaders in their communities,
and their listeners would have been shocked to hear about the events entailed in both of their
speeches. Cicero and Bush also have different perspectives in their arguments. Cicero relies on his
first hand experience in the matter, as Catiline planned to kill him. This allows him to connect with
his audience on a personal level. Meanwhile, Bush did not have to convince his audience that an
event was going to take place. Instead, he was able to put blame on a specific group for the terrorist
act, and provide information about their tactics and connections. This strategy works to inform the
public about possible future dangers. The strategies that Cicero and Bush employ in their language
diverge as well. Cicero tends to repeat words with negative connotations, so that it would be
ingrained in people s minds, while Bush tends to use simpler language that everyone can
understand. However, they both use questions in their speeches to switch ideas and catch the
attention of their listeners. They also both employ opposing language in their speeches to
distinguish right from wrong. While these two individuals both address disturbing historical events
in their speeches, they present their material in the most effective way to suit their

Maple Street. One main weapon humanity uses is prejudice. This quote is when Mr. Goodman

Satire In Invisible Man
There is a deliberate juxtaposition in the opening pages of Graceland between the garbage ridden
streets of Lagos teeming with naked children and Elvis melancholy, retrospective and, (not without
a deliberate irony on the part of Albani) reading a copy of Ellison s American classic Invisible
Man. The monstrous slum of Lagosis crushing in its poverty; Elvis, despite the squander of his
personal circumstance, somehow doesn t fit the image of his city. Why, in a novel based in its
exploration of a poverty stricken African slum, would the protagonist live entirely outside of the
normality of his setting? Elvis is an aspiring dancer; frequently ambiguous in both his gender and
sexuality, the unprecedentedly moralistic teenager constantly contradicts... Show more content on

It is here that the power of globalization is most evident; Elvis is molded and guided by
intangibilities, and the city of Lagos is also understood through the ways in which it contrasts
America. Despite the literal geographical separation between Lagos and Nigeria, the colonialist
influence of the western world and the United States are clearly chartered throughout the novel.
Admiring himself from many angles, he thought it was a shame he couldn t wear makeup in
public. That s not true, he mentally corrected himself. He could, like the transvestites that
haunted the car parks of hotels favored by rich locals and visiting whites. But like them, he
would be a target of some insult, or worse, physical beatings, many of which were meted out by
the police, who then took turns with their victims in the back of their vans. It was exasperating
that he couldn t appear in public looking as much like the real Elvis Presley as possible.
Struggling with his identity, Elvis desires to wear makeup without fearing the retaliation of his
community. It is in the implanted whiteness and pockets of Americanism where that freedom is
most closely accessible. Yet, the physical reality of the hotels (their literal placement in Lagos)
meant that the governing moral principles of Lagos prevented Elvis from being anything but an
outcast and a victim if he chose to express himself. The American presence in Lagos managed to
be pervasive while simultaneously having no palliative effect on Elvis estrangement within the
slum. The cast of characters employed by Albani, from the elitist white tourists to Redemption to
Uncle Joseph all serve to construct an image of Lagos in relation to America. It wasn t singularly
the explicit references to America or to Elvis s connection to the United States that aided Albani in
his describing of

If a person gains personal enhancement through prominence as an expert in a public controversy,
such prominence may transfer him into a limited purpose public figure. In Gilbert, a well known
plastic surgeon sued one of his patients for establishing a website criticizing unsuccessful surgeries
performed by the surgeon. The court held the surgeon voluntarily thrust himself into the

The court held that the president had injected himself into the controversy, and he was a limited
purpose public figure. Moreover, the court held that even though there was a period of time when
the controversy was not discussed publicly, the president s public figure status did not end
spontaneously with the stopping of the publicity. Rather, the public figure status continued as long
as the particular controversy continued.
A company s publication on a public forum with the purpose of influencing a controversy may be
voluntary injection. In Ampex, a former employee posted negative comments about a company on
an Internet message board, accusing his former employer of incompetence and the company s
management of being defective. The company issued press releases in response to the defamation,
and made them available on the company Web site. The court found the company had voluntarily
injected itself into the public controversy, because the Web site was a public forum that the
company frequently made public announcements on it for people to view. Publishing the issued
press releases on a public forum to influence the public opinion and counter the negative comments,
such actions was sufficient to prove the injection, because these actions had inserted the company
into the public s eye about the controversy.

Obedience Essay
English 1310 04 28 October 2011 Obedience as an act can be traced back to the very beginnings
of human history. The common belief has always been to obey authority at all cost. This act has
never been questioned because authority corresponds to the common belief that respecting
authority and obeying them will lead you to success in all aspects of life. Obedience is not
defined to specific situations and its context can be portrayed in various ways. For example, Erich
Fromm writes in his essay, Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem; Human history
began with an act of disobedience, and it is not unlikely that it will be terminated by an act of
disobedience. This statement suggests that everything which we perceived to be... Show more

Living technically refers to the advances in science that has propelled us to the atomic age.
However living emotionally refers to the Old Stone Age view on ideas about politics, state,
society. Fromm makes a very remarkable point when he states, If a man can only obey and not
disobey, he is a slave; if he can only disobey and not obey, he is a rebel(not a revolutionary); he
acts out of anger, disappointment, resentment, yet not in the name of a conviction or a principle
(Fromm 685) . This statement leaves little doubt that we cannot come up with an accurate
definition or reason behind obedience to authority. Essentially there is no gray area between
obedience and disobedience. At this point in the essay, Fromm is very close to convincing the
reader that obedience is a psychological and physical problem through the various examples in
history he has cited. Fromm continues to make his case that disobedience is detrimental to society
by explaining the two types of conscience that develop within the human psyche when confronted
with a important decision. The first type of conscience is authoritarian conscience which deals with
the internal voice that aims to please an authority figure out of fear. The second type, humanistic
conscience, can be explained as the voice in the back of your head that allows you to tell what is
human and inhuman. The complexity of defining which conscience ultimately decides your actions

the participants had died and many others had passed on the disease to their wives and children.
(Reverby, S.M., 2009)
This study was a symbol of unethical conduct and racial discrimination in medicine primarily
because of two reasons. First, the subjects were never told that they had syphilis and thus,
informed consent did not play any role in this experiment. Secondly, the subjects were told that
they were being treated for bad blood , a term used in the local language for various illnesses
such as anemia and fatigue. In reality, however, the officials never treated the subjects for
syphilis. The subjects were only provided free medical exams, free meals and burial insurance in
return for their participation in the study. The only permission which was taken from the subjects
was that to autopsy their body after death as also paying for their burial. Thus, the Tuskegee
experiment can be described as non therapeutic experiment that lasted for a very long duration of

the industry, there are two types of manufacturers: brand name and generic. These groups compete
not only among one another, but with each other as well. Brand name pharmaceutical companies

On the other hand, generic companies primary activities include developing, producing, marketing,

companies do engage in research and development (R D), it s goal is to create similar drugs that the
brand name manufacturer just patented. If successful, the generic company files an Abbreviated
New Drug Application (ANDA) for approval and must make a certification against each patent by
the brand name manufacturer. To do this, the generic company must make a Paragraph IV
certification which states that the patent is invalid or will not be infringed by the generic product
(Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper Scinto, 2012). In a reverse payment settlement agreement, brand name
pharmaceutical manufacturers provide compensation to generic pharmaceutical manufacturers in
order to settle the challenge to their patent. In order to receive the compensation, the generic

The South fought the American Civil War as a movement to separate themselves from the Union
and establish its own national citizenship. As a result of their resounding loss, Southerners chose to
focus their energies on maintaining their individual ethnic group which sets them apart from the
rest of the nation. According to John Shelton Reed, author of The Enduring South, The three
functional characteristics of an ethnic group are that: It serves psychologically as a source of group
identification; it provides a pattern network of groups; and it refracts the national cultural patterns
of behavior and values through the prism of its own cultural heritage. Reed allows his readers to

the element of Southern identity as pride in its heritage, culture, customs, and ideals. The South, as

extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive models, and
fact based management to drive decisions and actions. [1]. To be successful in today s
competition, my current employer, DLL Financial Solutions Partner (DLL), is competing on
analytics and fully aligned its core strategies to be supported by extensive statistical and computer
based decisions. DLL is a global financial services company with operation in 36 countries, and its
main focus is in the commercial equipment finance sector. In the following paragraph, I will
explain DLL s position in the industry and its ability to successfully compete on analytics with
regards to its core business functions.
In the organizational layer, DLL has a global business intelligenceand global analytics team. The
business intelligence team s focus is data warehousing, dashboard designing and providing real
time data companywide for all the countries, which can be queried via SQL or Hyperion. Given
that data often needs clean up and analysis to better understand its trends, the business intelligence
team has created a Virtual Reporting Tool which is accessible by all members of the company
and is meant to be the only source of the truth. This tool provides live reports and dashboards
which are used for monitoring purposes and for analysis. On the other hand, the global analytics
team s focus is

The Creation Story Of Adam And Eve Analysis
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you
were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return . In The Creation Story of Adam and Eve
, those are the words God tells Adam and Eve when they failed to obey God s only rule, not eat
from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout the story we follow their relationship with
God, in the events that began with their creation and ended in their exile. Therefore, in my sole
opinion based on The Creation of Adam and Eve, the story depicts Adamand Eve s relationship with
God and the underlying meaning of their existence and the oedipal conflict that is portrayed. It
suggests that maybe the story is a tale told in order to understand why we exist and our personal
purpose as well as to recognize the effects of the authoritarian commands God expressed to
Adam and Eve. The phrase existence precedes essence as told by Sartre means, we exist first and
then we do things that define ourselves and live our lives in whatever way we choose. This is the
case in, The Creation Story of Adam and Eve , when God created Adam from the dust of the
ground and Eve from one of Adam s ribs. He brought them to life in the Garden of Eden, but it was
up to them to create a purpose to exist. Therefore, Adam and Eve s actions of disobedience were
perhaps a way of God testing humankind by showing them paradise (Garden of Eden) and what
we were to lose if we d disobeyed him. God gave Adam a garden to take care of, animals to name,
and a wife for companionship. And they both got banished from paradise for choosing to have
the freedom of disobeying and as a result they have to be responsible for their actions. For
instance, in the Existentialism Lecture , it says that from an existentialist point of view, We must
choose what to do, where to go, and most importantly, what is meaningful to us and why. With
choice comes two related concepts: freedom and responsibility . Eve s wrongful actions are the
cause of why women to this day have had to fight harder than men to achieve their place in
society. As for Adam, his actions brought men to work for a living, which nothing in life is easy,
and you have to strive for it, it

Battle Of Trenton Dbq
At the start of the Revolutionary war, the British government and army thought the war would
be over in 6 months. However, the war ended up lasting about 8 years from 1775 to 1783. During
the war from 1776 to 1777, Britain laid out a strategy that would enable them to bring this war to
a close. Their strategies to end the war, ultimately failed and costed them big time. Their actions
in decisive battles was part of the reason why they faltered and failed during this time. Overall, the
sympathy of the Howe Brothers, the failure to seize opportunities, and logistical problems, was
what cause British failure. In 1776, the Howe brothers and a large British armada arrived in New
York City. When they arrived this was the best chance for Britain... Show more content on

In this battle, the British wanted to capture New York and sever New England from the rest of the
colonies. General Burgoyne and his army were stuck in a standstill, with the Benedict Arnold and
his colonist army, at the Hudson river and they depleted most of their resources. General Howe
was supposed to come to Burgoyne s rescue with reinforcements, however, he failed to help
General Burgoyne. This failure was due to conflicting strategies between the two generals and huge
communication problem within the British army. General Burgoyne had to surrender his entire
command at Saratoga to the American General Horatio Gates. When the British army lost this
battle, they also lost all hope to end or win the war. After Saratoga, France decided to help aid the
colonists, which ensured that they would win the war. If this British campaign was successful they
could have possibly ended the war. This British failure can be blamed on logistical problems within

Oedipus Heroic Qualities
I decided to write on The Tragic Hero In Oedipus Tyrannus because I know that there is a hero
within the tragedy that he suffers. The epic poem know for his downfall by avoiding fate, which
in turn can not be avoided, can be reintroduced as a gift from the Gods. Oedipus can be seen as
giving the people of Thebes a man with heroic qualities and acting upon these qualities, versus
being the result of a Laius curse. I will prove that journey is the real reason for the epic poem, with
the process of foreshadows helping design the conclusion of the complete heroic persona.
Oedipus has a the noble qualities of a hero to include courage, fearlessness, selflessness, and strong
character. There a times in which his actions reflected these traits of being a great heroic example
to the people of Thebes. There are few instances that will be sampled from the epic drama to draw
the attention that the fate placed upon Oedipus make him more of a hero than a fulfilled curse. ...

His selflessness was noted when his fate was revealed to him by Apollo, leading him to flee
Corinth where Merope and Polybus once lived, his parents. When Jocasta was speaking with
Corinthian Oedipus s reason for leaving was revealed, quoting Jocasta Oedipus was so afraid Of
killing Polybus that he ran from home (cite). His act of a keeping the wellbeing of others in mind
shows no selfish thinking. This also showed bravery Oedipus could have chosen not to leave his
first home in Corinth; his leaving was the act of a brave and impulsive man bent on avoiding evil,
but also on outrunning divine control and prophecy

The Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of E-Commerce In...
The traditional method of doing business has always been face to face trading. It is a medium for
both customers and businesses to negotiate and purchase and sell goods and services. However,
with the progression of the technology age, businesses and customers alike are finding convenience
and benefits through the use of e commerce. Electronic commerce(e commerce) involves online
transactions and the trading of goods and services through the Internet, without time and
geographical barriers (Network Solutions, 2014). This could include retail sites, large online music
stores such as iTunes or business to business (B2B) transactions between companies. This is a new

Summary Of The Legal Requirements And Guidance Relating To...
1. Analyse legal requirements and guidance relating to the safeguarding of children. Law and
guidance regulate the way you should work with children in your childcare setting to support and
encourage their well being and safeguard them from abuse and maltreatment. Legislation
provides a comprehensive instruction on what must be attained in respect to child protection and
safeguarding. Whereas Legal guidance is more precise and provides details on how the law
ought to be applied and fulfilled in early years settings and services. Laws and statutory
regulation are compulsory and should reinforce policies and procedures that are used in your
setting. Legal requirements Children Act 1989 Determines the duty of early year s practitioners to
identify and meet the separate and distinctive needs of children and to keep them safe. It initiated
the belief that the child ought to be at the centre of planning and that a child s well being and
safety are vital when judgements are made concerning them. This act also recognises the
accountabilities of parents in keeping their offspring safe. In this act there are two particular
segments that relate to the duty of local authority with concern to child protection, these are Section
17 States that services should be put into place to safeguard and promote the welfare of children

Urban Residential And Manufacturing Versus Agricultural Water
Urban residential and Manufacturing versus Agricultural Water Use Restrictions in California On
April 1st, 2015 California Governor Jerry Brown passed an executive order calling for the
reduction of water use in urban areas by 25 percent (average across all counties) relative to 2013
data (Bechtel). These restrictions did not include agricultural water uses despite Agriculture
accounting for approximately 80 percent of water use within the state (Bechtel). On June 12,
2015 restrictions were placed on agricultural use that affected up to 114 senior water right
holders (Sanders). These restrictions forbid farmers from using rivers that have been severely
diminished by the drought as a source of water. However, they can still legally pump
groundwater on their property and purchase water in the open market (Sanders). This means they
don t necessarily have to reduce the amount of water they use, it only strips them of one (for
some farmers very important) water resource. Supporters of this order include State Water
officials, State Senators Jim Nielson and Fran Pavley among other representatives, California
farmers, Senior water rights holders, and of course Governor Jerry Brown (Stevens). Felicia
Marcus of the State water Resources Control Board states, Asking people to cut back, take shorter
showers and put their lawn on a water diet is very different than fields that are fallow and
thousands of people out of work (Stevens).

If We Must Die
The pen is mightier than the sword, Claude McKay s poem is proof that this saying has some
authenticity to it. This saying was first documented in 1839 by a man named Edward Bulwer
Lytton during one of his most historical plays Cardinal Richelieu. The saying means that you
could accomplish more by communicating and using your words. McKay lived in the U.S.
around the time that racism was at its highest point, and the Ku Klux Klan was out committing
hate crimes. I ll explain McKay s poems purpose, then I ll discuss its meaning and effect, and
finally I ll talk about whether or not this poem was a rebellious act. To begin with, its important to
understand the setting in which this poem was created. The time period was 1919, some time after
slaves were freed and allowed to live among the whites in the United States. However not everyone
agreed with this, so people started mistreating the colored people... Show more content on

Everyday when you read the colored newspaper you always seen something horrible. Everyone
knew that the situation was bad but everyone was scared as well. McKay begins with If we must
die let it not be like hogs, this is important and was very strong to them because it had a lot of
meaning. It showed that they were being treated and slaughtered like animals and seen as less
than a person. Another powerful thing he said was If we must die oh, let us nobly die. This is
important because it would give people dignity and show that their life has meaning just like the
rest, and that they are people just like the white men. This put many to tears and enraged others
just because of how true it was. Colored people weren t the only ones who felt something for the
poem, in fact McKay got it published by a white man named Max Eastman. His poem was so good
that he actually had upset another author, Frank Harris, because he wasn t the one who got to publish

Roland s Influence On The Renaissance Church
Since its founding, Christianity has been very influential in many aspects of society. Not until
Christianity was unified under the umbrella of the Roman Catholic Church that the influences of its
doctrine spread, especially in literature. The progress of Christianity accelerated when Constantine I
adopted Christianityas the official religionof Rome. Soon after, Christianity became a state
sponsored religion. Constantine and various Christian leaders consolidated Christianity at the First
Council of Nicaea. This decision eventually led to the The Council of Chalcedon, which defined a
Christian hierarchy, and chose Rome as the center of Christianity. After the fall of the Roman
Empire, the medieval ages began shortly thereafter. Despite the... Show more content on

Overall, the consolidation of Christianity in Rome essentially led to a unified Christian voice which
commanded its powerful influence throughout the world; this includes the influences on Western
European writings during the Medieval and Renaissance Periods.
During the Medieval period, literature had many biblical references because of the Catholic
Church s influence. One literary piece that showed the influence of the church was the Song of
Roland. This literary tale takes place in Roncesvalles, which is between Italy and France, where
a major conflict between the Christians and Muslims occurred. Roland, was the protagonist, in
Charlemagne s army and was fighting valiantly against a Muslim force that outnumbers theirs. As
a way to settle the war and retreat back to France, Charlemagne s army is promised gold by the
Muslims. In a quick bid to end the war Charlemagne s soldiers say yes to the offer of gold. When

Pros And Cons Of Kevin Durant Leaving Oklahoma City
NBA article NBA fans still shocked about Kevin Durant leaving Oklahoma City and how much
hate he is getting from all his fans and the community of NBA basketball. LeBrone James still
thinks Cleveland cavaliers should trade more players even when they recently had Kyle Korver.
LeBrone also thinks he can keep functioning Cleveland without Kevin Love on the team. We the
community do not like the way NBA players move teams and leaving their old team into the
dust. Many players like Kevin Durant, Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose and Kyle Korver have left
their team to join a new one. Kevin Durant lost the semi finals in 2016 against golden state
warriors and in 2017 he joined golden state warriors. He said if you can t beat them, join them.
That left a lot of hate from his teammates and his fans. At this moment we burned all our jerseys

hard to see our favourite players leave their team.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cleveland cavaliers are selling tickets for $48. The lowest ranking team in the NBA is the Charlotte

Examples Of Negotiation In Negotiation
INTRODUCTION Negotiation is something that everyone is familiar with and we all do every
day. Negotiation is an art or a way in which two or more than two parties reach a mutually
benefitted agreement; thereby there is win win situation for both the parties involved. This skill
is very important for everyone, even if you own a small business; this is a necessary skill as
many business deals require negotiation. The golden rule for successful negotiation is to be fair
and square with everyone. An aggressive behavior will not give you a fair deal and you may end
up losing your customer/partner. Being a good negotiator helps you to reach agreements, achieve
objectives, get along better with people, and ultimately be more productive and successful.... Show

Individuals decide what they want, then each side takes up an extreme position, such as asking
the other side for much more than they expect to get. A typical example of negotiation over the
price of a car: What do you want for it? I couldn t let it go for under ВЈ2,000. I ll give you ВЈ1,000.
You must be joking. Well, ВЈ1,100 and that s my limit. ВЈ1,900 ... ВЈ1,300 ... ВЈ1,700 ... ВЈ1,500
... Done! While this form of bargaining may be acceptable in the used car market, and even
expected in some cultures, for most situations it has drawbacks. These drawbacks can have
serious consequences if applied to social situations. THE WIN WIN APPROACH TO
NEGOTIATION Many professional negotiators prefer to aim towards what is known as a Win
Win solution. This involves looking for resolutions that allow both sides to gain. In other words,
negotiators aim to work together towards finding a solution to their differences that result in both
sides being satisfied. Key points when aiming for a Win Win outcome include: Focus on
maintaining the relationship Focus on interests not positions. Generate a variety of options.
Aim for result to be based on a objective

Cinematic Techniques in Strictly Ballroom Essay
Extended Film Response
How the film techniques used by Baz Luhrman to influence the portrayal and development of
characters in the film Strictly Ballroom?
In the film Strictly Ballroom, the director Baz Luhrman uses many different film techniques to
influence the portrayal and development of characters. Costume and makeup is used as a vital
technique to show the audience the characters personalities and also the development of some
characters. Camera angles and lighting is another technique that is used to exaggerate the
characters personalities and the scenes they are in. Luhrman also uses character behaviors as an
effective technique in portraying each characters personality.

Even though Fran became more confident, her costume and makeup still suited her personality.
For example at the Pan Pacific Grand Prix, all of the other female dancers wore bright coloured,
revealing outfits, Fran wore a traditional red Spanish dress. At the end of the film Fran s physical
appearance changed dramatically and so did her confidence. These characters are good examples of
how Luhrman uses costume and makeup to effectively influence the portrayal and development of
characters in the film.
In Strictly Ballroom, Luhrman uses many different camera angles and lighting techniques to
exaggerate scenes, settings and even characters personalities. An example of this is at the start of
the film, when Scott Hastings is dancing by himself in a room, there is a bright, white spotlight on
him as he dances, drawing the audience to watch him. This happens whenever Scott dances and it
shows the audience that Scott has a sense of purity and that he is the protagonist of the film.
Luhrman uses low angle shots when Scott and Fran are dancing at the end of the film, this is a
good technique used so the audience can see them dancing and also gives the audience the
impression that they are dominate and confident. Another character who is a good example of
camera angles and film techniques being used on them to portray their personality is Barry Fife.
Barry is a mean character and Luhrman uses dark, reddish lighting to make him seem evil.

started to study into electricity and how it worked mainly exploring the chemical side of how it
worked, eventually it lead him to invent a new lamp that miners would come to use for coal
mining. The new lamp allowed them to travel farther down into the mine thus being able to
mine more coal and as a result make more profit and power off the coal. Here is how it worked,
it had a wick in the center of a mesh screen the mesh screen acted as a sort of breather it
prevented methane gas and other flammable gases from building up inside casing it to explode.

War Narrative
It started out as yet another wet and sloppy day in the camp with nothing to do. I sat in my bunk
listening to my buddies talk amongst themselves about the crappy weather and the war. They
chatted about the normal things; all of them wanting to finally get home and be dry, but all of them
knowing that it would not happen any time soon. As I sat there in my hard cot, my minddrifted off
to the fond memories of home in Iowa. I remember my sister and my two brothers and recall the
great times we had together. I can still picture the looks on the faces of my family as I left them

started with the days of the draft in 1969. I sat and listened to all the dates being called out and

and moving. Life, however, didn t stop with me and the time before being brought in for the first
round of training came by like a rocket. There was hardly anytime to blink prior to the first day of
training. Training was a very hard and rough experience, especially, due to the fact I was not a
good runner. I can still faintly feel the in my arms from the numerous pushups and physical
activities that we endured. Beyond the physical pain, came the mental and emotional strain of
getting ready for a war. I was only 19 years old at the time and had not really had a chance to grow

survive. Following the six weeks of initial training, I quickly married my high school sweetheart

  • 2. The Common Pattern Of Alternating Extinctions And Radiations Extinctions and Radiations W 1, A 3 Bio 1021 By Roxanne Fortune South University Submitted: November, 16th, 2016 The common pattern of alternating extinctions and radiations has been done through biodiversity studies which studies the different organisms of species living on earth and where they live. In Stilwell (2003) journal, Palaeocene faunas are characterized by a perceived rapid evolutionary radiation involving many new taxa at both genus and species level. Stilwell stated Molluscs living at the beginning of tertiary period after the K T extinction event was the beginning of modern fauna. There was research that saw the decimation of scores of marine organisms. Mollusc groups were mentioned (e.g. Ammonites, Belemnites Rudistid and Trigoniid Bivalves), (Stilwell, 2003). In Stilwell s research journal, Austral Palaeocene Molluscs focuses on the composition of faunas and patterns of evolution, it shows diversity and riches. The Southern Hemisphere show the break up of Supercontinent Gondwana and also changes in oceanic circulation and climate. In the northern Hemisphere shows major diversity changes in the Marine Realm. In a journal written by Racki, it was mentioned, with the enlargement and nitrification most likely will lead to the loss of deep water niches and step by step siliceous faunas go through severe non selective losses during the end Permian mass extinction, (Racki, 1999). All because of sudden volcanic winter the super anoxia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing... Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Developing Countries: The Role of Local Community Support and Involvement Over the last two decades, a consensus has gradually emerged that long term conservation depends on understanding and support from those closely connected to the environment and its resources (Shine, Klemm, 1999.) Several international environmental conventions have reflected this consensus by establishing a legal basis to involve local communities, especially those in developing countries, in their implementation. Recent changes in the focus of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands are consistent with this global trend towards emphasizing the importance of community support and involvement. Adopted in Ramsar, Iran on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By contrasting and comparing case studies in developing countries with varying degrees of wetland conservation success, it is clear that local community involvement and support of conservation is critical to success. Acknowledging this, those sites with unsuccessful wetland conservation have begun to plan initiatives to promote community participation and support. This study focuses solely on wetland conservation in developing countries, where lifestyles and lack of government capacity make community support and involvement in wetland conservation policies and practices particularly important. People in the developing world are more closely connected to the environment than those in developed countries. Since they rely more directly on the extraction of natural resources and use of natural services for their sustenance and economy, their lifestyles have a more direct impact on the immediate ecosystem. Given that all countries, but especially developing countries...need to enhance their internal capacity to manage their environmental protection and sustainable development, a lack of national and state government capacity results in a greater need for the support and involvement of local communities in wetland conservation (Susskind, et al. 2002). Since developing country governments may not have the finances, institutions, or knowledge to strictly enforce their wetland conservation policies, community policy support is ... • 4. My First Ride At Night It was eleven o clock at night. The rain showered my face as I ran through dirt and gravel towards my step father s familiar police car, and with each step I took, rain water splashed in every direction. I hurriedly jumped into the lifelessly black passenger seat of the police car. This was my first time sitting a cruiser, and it was much more petite than I had expected. Studying the inside of the cruiser, I noticed that the interior of the car was entirely the blackest of black, completely colorless and boring. I was eager to go on my first ride along. I could not help but to imagine what I may witness. Although I knew the chances of something exciting happening were slim, I held on to that miniscule chance of having an exciting night. My step father, Andy, jumped into the driver seat of his policecar, which appeared to be quite sizable compared to the passenger seat that I resided in. He turned on the computer that rested in between he and I as I glanced over at the computer as curiosity had struck about what was on it. There was an assortment of letters and numbers; I had not the slightest clue as to what they meant. The only thing I knew, was that the assortment was a series of police codes. Andy informed me that the first thing he does, at the beginning of each shift, is to get gas because he is not allowed to get bellow a half of a tank for safety reasons. As we drove to a Duchess Shop, I looked out of the window, studying the cars that we passed. Each car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Personal Statement On Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility is holding you accountable for all your actions and decisions. Being personally responsible means you take ownership of what you do in and with your life. This means from the time you wake up until you go to bed at night, your life is your responsibility and yours alone. Your values, morals, and beliefs are all contributing factors in how you view being personally responsible. If you have been raised and taught to believe that you should consider your actions at all times, then responsibilitybecomes second nature to you . For some it may be a little more difficult to grasp this concept. What we need to remember is that personal responsibility is important in every aspect of life . In collegeone has to take personal responsibility very seriously. I began my college education in my early thirties. I had been out of school for quite some time and knew that I faced a real challenge. I had to purpose in my mindthat I was going to do whatever it took to reach my academic goals. Starting out I faced several disadvantages , from lack of financial aid, to self doubt. I had to take charge of what was my dream and find a way to make it happen. I went to the college after obtaining my GED and just laid it all out on the line. Once I received my first class schedule I felt I was on my way. That very first class night I had an eye opening moment. I realized that this was going to take a lot of hard work and determination. I found out quickly that not everyone ... • 6. The Godfather, The Exorcist, And The Silence Of The Lambs The Godfather, The Exorcist, and The Silence of the Lambs are three films that are often given the title greatest of all time in their respective genre, for very good reason. Each film consists of scenes that are crafted so unforgettably that the scenes leave each viewer with a sense of awe, shock, and horror when each scene is carefully examined. The Godfather, distributed in 1972 by Paramount Pictures, was directed by Francis Ford Coppolawho in an interview said in regards to his filmmaking that If you don t take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn t been seen before? (1). The Godfather certainly presented cinema with iconic and memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen largely due to the new and risky ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather s narrative. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the bones of audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema. The scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences who came from religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face to face with The Devil, Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme s 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene very memorable, particularly when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Community Policing Defined Community policing Community policing is defined as a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which support the systematic use of partnerships and problem solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime according to the U.S. Department of Justice. (U. S. Department of Justice). In other words the main goal of community policing is the allocation of various police agencies/staff to particular areas around the community so they become familiar with its inhabitants and lifestyle. This style of policing attempts to modify the department through a system called de bureaucratization and has four major goals to meet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assigning key officers to permanent locations, Chicago officers could gain greater knowledge of the community problems and how to solve them responsibly. Community policing displays the basic elements of policing and it has some helped shape recent policing strategies such as Problem Oriented Policing and Zero Tolerance Policing. The most important obvious difference from other policing strategies is that it represents a major change in the basic role of a police officer. Traditionally police officers were used to only fight crime, with community policing it broaden their role to order maintenance, conflict resolution and social and physical disorders within the home. Problem oriented policing main focus is based on law, order and fear problems. Unlike Community policing, POP opts that officers should address particular problems and develop creative responses to each one. Instead of a crime fighter image officers under the POP ideology function as problem solvers, planners, and community advocates. POP and Community Policing are very similar in their police tactics however, the newly accepted Zero tolerance Policy is very different. It is characterized by interventions that aggressively enforce criminal/civil laws and that are conducted for the purpose of restoring order to communities. This theory believes through harsh and aggressive enforcement of laws, crime will cause the community to be more inclined to care which will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Theme Of Nature In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Mary Shelley s Frankenstein was a groundbreaking novel into the horrors that humans can achieve. It helped defined a genre, and gave a new meaning to the gothic novel line of books. Shelley came up with the idea of Frankenstein during a bet with her fellow poet friends. Whomever could write the best scary story won their competition, and this was how Frankensteinwas born. Shelley included many themes in her creation of the story Frankenstein such as Family, Imagination, Ambition, Education, and Nature. Mary Shelley imbued all these themes into her story to create a connection from the characters to her readers, for us to help understand her characters deeply. One feels a sense of connection with the monster and Victor in this story. Shelley... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The monster is almost a child, in amazement at the wonder of nature. The irony behind his love of nature is clear because the monster himself is a violation of nature. Victor reversed nature when he brought back something from the dead. The creature may be living, breathing, and sentient but he is an abomination of nature. Shelley used her grief of losing her baby, to create the monster in a way that makes him seem as if he is an infant and he has been rejected as an infant by society and made out to be an evil monster (Britton, Abstract). The creature himself was just born a man, he did not experience infanthood, he was just created. He was created and immediately hated, and he could not understand why because he had the mind of an infant. He was innocent until he was treated horribly. This is an example of human nature. Human nature is hating something that is so different than you, just for being different. And human nature is shown in all its ugliness in this story, for wherever the monster goes, there are people to chase him away for being scary. This almost parallels the Rime of the Ancient Mariner in a sense. In the Ancient Mariner, the Mariner harms nature and nature harms him right back. The theme is that you must respect nature otherwise you will be killed by the one thing you defiled. And this is true of Victor and his monster. He defiled nature, and the life of what he created, and nature came back to kill his family and in the end, it killed Victor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Magical Realism In Catch Of A Death Foretold By Gabriel... Magical Realism is, by definition, a story composed of primarily realistic events which are enhanced by supernatural or magical events. Catch of a Death Foretold, a novel by Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez, holds several occurrences that would classify the book as magical realism. The realistic points of the book are easy to point out of course, a small town, two angry brothers, a devastated fiancee etc... However, the magical realism lays in the details of the book. In the crevices of his storyline, Marquez hides multiple magical components that he uses to remind the reader of the magicwithin reality. For example, Bayardo San Roman returning to Angela after not opening a single letter from her, Santiago dreaming of the rain that falls at the moment of his death, and most protruding, everyone in the town knowing of Santiago s fate, besides himself. The idea of anything like this happening is so unrealistic, that it blends seamlessly together to form an interesting and wildly intriguing novel. When Bayardo leaves Angela because of her treason to him, Angela picks up the habit of writing a letter a week to Bayardo, and continues to do so over a period of 17 years. Angela must have written Bayardo over 850 letters over this period of time, yet Bayardo claims to have never opened even one. Despite this, he somehow decides to return to Angela and forgive her. You may ask yourself, how could this be? , and the answer lies within one word: magic. Magic that is inserted so fluidly into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the college degree is from a more prestigious school, that percentage increases even further (McArdle). Even President Barack Obama acknowledged this in a 2012 speech, saying that The incomes of folks with a collegedegree are twice as high as those who don t have a high school diploma (Lemann). While a college educationis a good investment for the long run, the cost of college is not a positive. Not only is college becoming more common, but it would make sense that with more students coming into college that the rates would be lower. However, colleges are not decreasing costs, but instead increasing them, making tuition costs harder on students. The job market is evolving, causing college to be essential to anyone that wants to pursue a job. In a 2012 speech, President Barack Obama said that right now, the unemployment rate for Americans with a college degree or more is about half the national average (Lemann). This shows that even with a college degree, the job market is changing, causing many students to be unemployed.Yet at the same time, people that have a college education are better off than those without one. Moreover, the current job market is becoming more information based, which requires more literacy, math skills and critical thinking. This allows him to connect with his audience on a personal level. Meanwhile, Bush did not have to convince his audience that an event was going to take place. Instead, he was able to put blame on a specific group for the terrorist act, and provide information about their tactics and connections. This strategy works to inform the public about possible future dangers. The strategies that Cicero and Bush employ in their language diverge as well. Admiring himself from many angles, he thought it was a shame he couldn t wear makeup in public. That s not true, he mentally corrected himself. He could, like the transvestites that haunted the car parks of hotels favored by rich locals and visiting whites. But like them, he would be a target of some insult, or worse, physical beatings, many of which were meted out by the police, who then took turns with their victims in the back of their vans. It was exasperating that he couldn t appear in public looking as much like the real Elvis Presley as possible. Struggling with his identity, Elvis desires to wear makeup without fearing the retaliation of his community. It is in the implanted whiteness and pockets of Americanism where that freedom is most closely accessible. Yet, the physical reality of the hotels (their literal placement in Lagos) meant that the governing moral principles of Lagos prevented Elvis from being anything but an outcast and a victim if he chose to express himself. The American presence in Lagos managed to be pervasive while simultaneously having no palliative effect on Elvis estrangement within the slum. At this point in the essay, Fromm is very close to convincing the reader that obedience is a psychological and physical problem through the various examples in history he has cited. Fromm continues to make his case that disobedience is detrimental to society by explaining the two types of conscience that develop within the human psyche when confronted with a important decision. The first type of conscience is authoritarian conscience which deals with the internal voice that aims to please an authority figure out of fear. In an effort to identify what makes the South a distinctive region, one must explore the comparisons of culture, education, racism, religion, and identity of the South and its people to the rest of America. The South fought the American Civil War as a movement to separate themselves from the Union and establish its own national citizenship. As a result of their resounding loss, Southerners chose to focus their energies on maintaining their individual ethnic group which sets them apart from the rest of the nation. According to John Shelton Reed, author of The Enduring South, The three functional characteristics of an ethnic group are that: It serves psychologically as a source of group identification; it provides a pattern network of groups; and it refracts the national cultural patterns of behavior and values through the prism of its own cultural heritage. Reed allows his readers to grasp the intensity in which Southerners met, and still meet today, all three of the functional characteristics of an ethnic group. Throughout his book, Reed purposes to enlighten the reader that Southern ness is attained by three different measures: birth, achievement, or unwilling thrust (such as the African Americans who were brought to America under duress). The Enduring South exposes the element of Southern identity as pride in its heritage, culture, customs, and ideals. The South, as it has been nationally defined, is referred to as the eleven ex Confederate states, with the additions of Oklahoma and Kentucky; and the rest of America is referred to as non Southerners. • 41. The Creation Story Of Adam And Eve Analysis By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return . In The Creation Story of Adam and Eve , those are the words God tells Adam and Eve when they failed to obey God s only rule, not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout the story we follow their relationship with God, in the events that began with their creation and ended in their exile. Therefore, in my sole opinion based on The Creation of Adam and Eve, the story depicts Adamand Eve s relationship with God and the underlying meaning of their existence and the oedipal conflict that is portrayed. It suggests that maybe the story is a tale told in order to understand why we exist and our personal purpose as well as to recognize the effects of the authoritarian commands God expressed to Adam and Eve. The phrase existence precedes essence as told by Sartre means, we exist first and then we do things that define ourselves and live our lives in whatever way we choose. This is the case in, The Creation Story of Adam and Eve , when God created Adam from the dust of the ground and Eve from one of Adam s ribs. He brought them to life in the Garden of Eden, but it was up to them to create a purpose to exist. Therefore, Adam and Eve s actions of disobedience were perhaps a way of God testing humankind by showing them paradise (Garden of Eden) and what we were to lose if we d disobeyed him. God gave Adam a garden to take care of, animals to name, and a wife for companionship. And they both got banished from paradise for choosing to have the freedom of disobeying and as a result they have to be responsible for their actions. For instance, in the Existentialism Lecture , it says that from an existentialist point of view, We must choose what to do, where to go, and most importantly, what is meaningful to us and why. With choice comes two related concepts: freedom and responsibility . Eve s wrongful actions are the cause of why women to this day have had to fight harder than men to achieve their place in society. As for Adam, his actions brought men to work for a living, which nothing in life is easy, and you have to strive for it, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Oedipus Heroic Qualities I decided to write on The Tragic Hero In Oedipus Tyrannus because I know that there is a hero within the tragedy that he suffers. The epic poem know for his downfall by avoiding fate, which in turn can not be avoided, can be reintroduced as a gift from the Gods. Oedipus can be seen as giving the people of Thebes a man with heroic qualities and acting upon these qualities, versus being the result of a Laius curse. I will prove that journey is the real reason for the epic poem, with the process of foreshadows helping design the conclusion of the complete heroic persona. Oedipus has a the noble qualities of a hero to include courage, fearlessness, selflessness, and strong character. Negotiation is an art or a way in which two or more than two parties reach a mutually benefitted agreement; thereby there is win win situation for both the parties involved.
