Creative Teacher Research Paper
When I first started creative writing, I knew only two things about the teacher: she had purple and
gray hair and she was an ex marine. She walked into class and looked appalled that we had the
audacity to sit in five perfectly straight rows of five chairs. The first thing she made us do was put our
desks in a circle. It was right then and there that I wondered what the heck I had gotten myself into.
My creative writing teacher is by far the teacher who has had the most impact on my life. She is a
realist and understood that not everything in life was all good and fine. Real life is gritty, she would
say. Let your writing reflect that. Before that, there was always a set of rules to follow in writing: no
cursing, no violence, no true depictions

Elephants Cant Dance Essay
Who says elephants can t dance? the book is an account of IBM s historic turnaround as told by, the
chairman and CEO of IBM, Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. He led IBM from April 1993 until March 2002. He
raised IBM from the brink of bankruptcy and mainframe obscurity back to the forefront of the
technology.
Book tells the story of IBM s competitive and cultural transformation. It is an excellent case study in
managing a crisis, principles of leadership and a thoughtful reflection on computer industry. With
decades of experience at some of America s top companies Mckinsey, American Express, RJR
Nabisco, Louis Gerstner s insights into management and leadership are applicable to any business, at
any level. The lessons learnt from running these successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By 1993, the computer industry had changed rapidly with a large number of smaller companies
dealing in fragmented solutions as opposed to IBM which was offering a complete solution. The
company was on its way to losing $16 billion and it was on the watch list for extinction. Its lumbering
size, the PC era and its insular corporate culture were the reasons it was heading to obsolescence.
Who Says elephants can t dance? .... Metaphor of the title talks about IBM, The Elephant , suggests
the size (with presence in over 44 countries, 2300 shareholders, 90000 staff) and bureaucracy of a
multinational company and its ability, to dance , to become profitable after more than a decade of
losses.
Gerstner explains the situation of IBM and other small companies in the marketplace as: Big matters.
Size can be leveraged. Breadth and depth allow for greater investment, greater risk taking, and longer
patience for future payoffs. It isn t a question of whether elephants can prevail over ants. It s a
question of whether a particular elephant can dance. If it can, the ants must leave the dance

Veertebrae Body
Vertebrae, while differing slightly based on their region in the spinal column, typically consist of a
body and vertebral arch. Anterior to the arch, the body (1) is the thick, broad part of the bone that
serves to support and bear weight. Between each individual body is the intervertebral disk space. The
vertebral arch is made of several parts. Pedicles (2) extend posteriorly from the body and curves to the
laminae (2). These two parts encircle the vertebral foramen with the body. Above and below the
pedicles are the superior and inferior vertebral notch, respectively, and they form the intervertebral
foramina when stacked. Zygopophyseal joints are formed by the superior and inferior articular
processes. At the junctions of the pedicle and lamina, the transverse processes (2) protrude laterally.
The spinous process (1) is the most posterior part of the vertebrae and projects from the junction of the
left and right laminae. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
C1 (Atlas) and C2 (Axis) are unique; C1 has no vertebral body and C2 has a distinct structure called
the odontoid process, which extends up to C1. Thoracic vertebrae progress in size and appearance as it
goes from the cervical to lumbar region. An important feature of the thoracic vertebrae is that they
have demifacets for rib articulation. Lumbar vertebrae are the inferior most in the vertebral column.
Therefore they are the largest and strongest to sustain most of the body weight. Thoracic and lumbar

Air Liquide, A Global Company
INTRO (DIVYA)
Air Liquide, a global company that specializes in gases, technologies and services for the industry and
health, was founded in France in 1902 by Georges Claude and Paul Delorme. Shortly after acquiring
investments from 24 shareholders within a short period, their incredible journey began (in text
citation). Today, they operate on a global scale, present in over 80 countries (in text citation). To focus
primarily on Air Liquide s activities based in the United States and Canada over the past 25 years,
interviews were conducted with the following employees of the multi billion dollar corporation; Mr.
Gabriel Constantin, Mr. Slim Naanaa, Mr. M. Sundar, Mr. Benjamin Jurcik and a retired employee
who wished to remain anonymous. Their insight on their employer was very uniform regardless of the
department they work or have worked under, which perfectly illustrated the culture and overall values
instilled throughout the company. It became clear that all informants believed that constant innovation
within a company is crucial to maintain a substantial advantage over its competitors.
According to our retired informant, Air Liquide promoted their company on an international scale for
only the past 25 years by focusing on finding new purpose for the gas to improve consumers
processes. He explains that one of the main goals of research and development is to pursue related
diversification. As an example, our informant described the process by which fibreglass is made.

Republican President Ronald Reagan served as...
Republican President Ronald Reagan served as Commander in chief from January 1981 to January of
1989, holding his position in office for two terms. When Reagan took his oath into office, he inherited
prior damage from predecessor Jimmy Carter, including the issue of the Iranian Hostage Crisis as well
as damage inflicted by the Vietnam War from years prior. Reagan s start in politics was not the normal
approach. Coming from a successful career as a popular Hollywood actor, Reagan acquired his
interest in politics in a more unconventional way. As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan
became involved in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry. His political views

Reagan inherited a misery index (the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates) of 19.99%, and
when he left office it had dropped to 9.72% . Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created.
Not only did he cut tax rates, but the Tax Reform Act of 1986 simplified the income tax code by
eliminating many tax shelters, reducing the number of deductions and tax brackets. Reagan s dream of
tax returns fitting on a postcard has been nullified as Congress has regressed and continued to make
the tax code more complex, necessitating a new push for reform. Reagan played a large part in
restrengthening the weak, ineffectual, and vulnerable military which left behind after President Carters

including stealth technology and precision weaponry, later used in Persian Gulf wars. Reagan s
buildup was the largest peacetime defense enlargement in history, which included larger training

country as a whole, and even years later still had an impact on our military efforts. Reagans

Biography Of Isaac Newton s Three Laws Of Motion
Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who had developed his three
laws of motion by the age of 23. He was born in 1642 the same year the Italian astronomer Galileo
Galilei died. Galileo s work helped to influence or set the stage for the development and creation of
Newton s three laws. Newton s three laws of motion consists of the first law which is the concepts of
inertia, second law which is relating acceleration to its cause and lastly the third law which is action
and reaction. The laws of motion were interpreted in the most famous and influential book of all time
called, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica created by Newton in 1687. The book was often
known as Principia used to explain and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only way to change an objects motion is for it to be impacted by an unbalanced force.
Next is Newton s second law of motion also known as the Law of Force and Acceleration . He was the
first to recognize the relationship between force and mass in the production of acceleration. This
discovery became one of the most central rules of nature that was able to shape the form of physics.
The law states; The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the
magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the
mass of the object . This is usually expressed by the equation Force= mass x acceleration (F=ma). The
law also states that the smaller the object the higher the acceleration there will be and vise versa the
larger the object the smaller the acceleration will be. The acceleration of an object depends on the net
force acted on the object and the mass of the object. If the mass and net force is both doubled then the
acceleration will remain unchanged. This law also gives a explanation for why objects with different
masses are able to fall with equal/same acceleration. If the object is only acted on by the gravitational
force then air resistance is negligible which is called free fall. During free fall the acceleration of the
objects also depends on its inertia and uses the equation Force/mass=gravity (F/m=g), g always

Analysis of Karen Russell
Analysis of Karen Russell s St. Lucy s Home for girls Raised by Wolves St. Lucy s Home for girls
Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell s collection of fantastical short stories take all that is mundane and
fractures it into a fantastical world with humor, dramatic tone, or cultural/religious undertones. Russell
whirls a reader into her stories with her capability to encase a reader in the story with her repetition of
one s senses. Constantly brining in the senses of a reader brought in the smells of a surrounding from
the protagonist or in this case the narrator. In St. Lucy s Home for girls Raised by Wolves, our
narrator, Claudette, speaks from the mind of a half human half wolf in transition. Of the pack s

Claudette becomes known as the protagonist and narrator shortly after this switch. After every sense,
emotion, and interaction was a pack experience, for Russell to cut this tie and create a story that is of
an individual is a subtle experience at first; from a united thought process that slowly turn individual
to self centered and selfish. This is apparent in Claudette s frame of mind towards her little sister
Mirabella, from the pack worrying about Mirabella (230) to Claudette singular thoughts and emotions
toward her littlest sister . This switch epitomizes the coming to age alone tone that Russell creates,
initially the pack protected each other, thought as one, and were connected in every way till they
adapted to the new environment, becoming singular units growing up isolated from each other snarl at
one another for no reason (229) becoming accustomed to thinking individually as an independent
person. These stories although diverse in content and storyline Russell connects each to another
almost subconsciously. They share similar struggle of coming of age stories, stories of isolation in the
first person that reveal one trait or another within the battle. Despite the fact that is the same reasoning
with each story it has a new outcome, therefor the stories are not repetitive while the elements used
might be. Russell s constant use of senses or imagery of hands and feet do not subtract from the story
but heighten them. Russell

Why I Am A Motor Skill
When observing Presley, with her body size you noticed she is larger than the other children around
her. I was informed by one of the caregivers she is the oldest out of the children there. Not knowing
actual height and weight, comparing her to the other children, she was taller and looked fuller. Presley
is two years old and if fully walking. Under the gross motor skill, the third element in the dynamic
system; practice unbalanced, wide legged, short strides become steady, smooth gait, Presley was
surpassed that stage. She walked with her arms down, not out, and legs were close together. The other
children around her seemed to be in the practice phase. One fine motor skill I noticed was a mouth
skill, pronunciation. Her words were clear, making it easier to understand what she asked for or
talking in general. She said zapatoes , which is a spanish word for shoes and was said clearly and
understood. Presley grasping was more focused on toys, while I was there she did not get into any
altercations(pulling hair/biting) with the other children. Because Presley is two years old, I noticed
more Tertiary Circular Reactions, rather than primary/secondary circular reaction. For an example of
stage six, when Presley was trying to put the shorts on the doll, she placed the doll on the on the table
and when she tried to put the shorts on the doll would slide forward, making it difficult for her to get
the shorts on. She had others around her and did not ask for help, until another

Qualitative Multiple Case Study
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study is to explore strategies some immigrant small
business owners use to sustain their businesses beyond five years. The targeted population
encompasses three immigrant small business owners in Houston, Texas that have continued their
business for over five years. The implications for positive social change include the potential for
successful immigrant small business owners to encourage immigrants and entrepreneurs to expand or
start small businesses, thereby improving the availability of multicultural goods and services. Small
business owners will likely gain an increased knowledge of strategies for business sustainability
beyond five years, which will encourage immigrants to expand businesses in Houston, Texas and other
multicultural cities.

Researchers employ the multiple case study design for understanding a phenomenon, by collecting
data through interviews, observations, records and reports, patterns, consistencies, repetitions, and
manifestations (Park Park, 2016). Therefore, the multiple case design is appropriate for this study
because I will be gathering data to explore the phenomenon of immigrant small business
sustainability. Although researchers employ a phenomenological design to explore a phenomenon, it
uses minimal data samples (Stovell, Wearden, Morrison, Hutton, 2016). The phenomenological design
will not be suitable for this study because I will not be using minimal data samples to explore lived
experiences of the business owners. The ethnography design will not be appropriate for this study;
although the ethnography design also draws knowledge from theory to interpret findings, observation
is for an extended period (Morse, 2016), which is unavailable for this

Catholic Community
The Catholic Church is an ancient community that has been studied and analyzed since it s
beginnings, over two thousand years ago. When I was fourteen, I chose independently to be apart of
this community and learn it s specific, complex structure. It took me about five years to really get a
grasp on the functions of the Catholic Church and the community it provides. Entering, I believed the
Church was simply a place people gathered to worship, but over time it proved to be much more than
that. Being a member of the Catholic community meant, not only, being literate in the language of the
Church and the sacred, fundamental texts but additionally, being literate in the specific genres that
help the Catholic community accomplish its goals. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Equally as important as the old, customary texts are the new, ever changing ones. In my parish, and in
Catholic parishes through out the world, weekly bulletins are handed out giving information about
what the Catholic Church is doing in your community and how you can get involved. New Catholic
literature is being published every day, ranging anywhere from an a deeper understanding of the
Church to advice on how to live a life in accordance with the Church. There are an endless amount of
message boards and forums, Facebook groups, text message groups, the list continues. The importance
of writing and rhetoric within the Catholic community is immense. If new literature was never being
written, the Catholic community would cease to evolve and the mission of the Church could not be
achieved. The writings of all members, ordained or lay, are essential to the Catholic community. These
two categories of texts within the Catholic community, the old and the new , are not entirely separate,
though. Texts formed today by ordained ministers of the Church, teachers in the community, and lay
people are branches off of the initial texts that form the foundation of the Church. Recently published
books, journals or blogs by Catholic authors regularly reference sacred, fundamental texts of the
community. Michael Rennier is a Catholic blogger who posts his writings on a Catholic

US Consumer Culture
While the US consumer culture has many different goods that encapsulate its uniqueness, nothing
quite represents the US than its trash. You are probably asking yourself at this point how a country s
waste can have any importance at all in its consumer culture. Waste is one output every company, no
matter its size, must be concerned with. With the ever present climate problems our society faces,
proper disposal of waste is a necessity. Luckily for companies in the US, they have found a way to
capitalize through strategic marketing and planned obsolescence. Yet, unfortunately for consumers,
they are often taken advantage of without knowledge of the occurrence. The true American view on
consumerism, where products are bought with a short term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There are the manufacturers and corporations whose main concern largely is to profit. there are the
environmentalists who want to preserve the community and promote recycling to help diminish the

obsolescence in mind, some who buy with the environment in mind, but do little research to ensure it
is a wholesome company, and then there are those who to extensive research to make sure they are
hurting the environment as little as possible. Consumers have the opportunity to make conscious
decisions to help our environment, but the reality behind products is well hidden and needs to be
brought to higher attention. Waste epitomizes the American consumer culture to continuously buy new
products, and not think about the harm it is causing the environment. Recycling has evolved over time
into a ploy to make consumers spend more money, and is causing more harm to the environment by
increasing the amount of packaging used over product. The growing consumerist culture can be
attributed to the increased greenwashing scheme. Is it morally right for companies to increase their

Mayan Farming Techniques
Most Ancient Mayans were farmers and are famous for the farming techniques they developed. These
techniques were so popular among the Mayans that they are still used in their communities today, over
two thousand year later. Most of these ancient communities had a communal farm for the elderly,
widowers, and sick people. The different families took turns working these plots to help the less
fortunate. Each family group had its own plot or plots of land that they farmed for their own family
unit. The Mayans divided roles between the men and women. The men were hunters. The women
worked the farm, cooked the food, raised the children, took care of the animals, and wove the families

In those areas where there was not an abundance of farm land, the Mayans had to be resourceful. They
would build stone walls on terraces in the mountainous region to level out the ground for planting.
They had to put a lot of thought into the way they built these terraces so that there was not a loss of
crops due to water run off and erosion. Many times there were canals close by these terraces to help
irrigate the crops. These terraces allowed the Mayan s to do something called Multi cropping. This is
the practice of planting and harvesting a plot of land multiple times a year. With canals and dams
around these terraces the Mayans had water in these areas year round allowing them to farm year

The Advantages of Color Vision Essay
When we think of color vision, we imagine the variety of colors the human eye can see. Perhaps
people may believe having color vision is a huge benefit for animals as opposed to having dichromatic
or even monochromatic vision. If that would be the case, then why do not all the animals have color
vision? A thought to keep in mind is what is the purpose of seeing color for animals. We will dive
deeper into how color vision may play a role in the lives of animals and humans. The different groups
of animals we will examine are the marine animals, wild Neotropical monkeys, primates, and humans
as well. The first area that will be covered will be animals with monochromatic vision. We must know
what it means to have monochromatic vision before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The heterozygote superiority hypothesis is in question because it states that animals that have
trichromatic vision have a fitness advantage over those that do not (Fedigan 1). This is referring to
animals who have less than three cones of vision. There is a group of wild Neotropical monkeys that
have polymorphic vision. This means the group has members that either have dichromatic or
trichromatic vision. The thought is the trichromatic members can find fruits or fresh leaves better than
those with dichromatic vision because of distinguishable colors of fruit that can be seen with
trichromatic vision (Fedigan 1). This idea fits the heterozygote superiority hypothesis. At first the
hypothesis seemed correct based on a study that used tamarins because the one with the three cones of
vision was able to spot patches of food more easily. The issue that comes into play is that there is no
good evidence for wild populations. Work that was done on Capuchins to see who had an advantage
on feeding based on the type of vision they had. The result was that neither seemed to have a
significant advantage over the other. Because animals are able to use other senses when foraging for
food trichromacy may in fact provide little advantage (Bunce 1060). More studies were conducted by
Linda Fedigan to find out the survival rate of infants whose mother had either trichromatic or
dichromatic vision. The

Existential counselling is a philosophical form of counselling which addresses the situation of a
person s life and situates the person firmly within the predictable challenges of the human condition.
Existential counselling considers human living to take place within four dimensions: physical, social,
psychological and spiritual. It shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force field,
within which predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Human beings can learn to deal
with these tensions and conflicts more effectively by facing up to the negatives as well as the positives
of their lives, including the tensions of life and death, love and hate, strength and weakness and
meaning and absurdity. Best known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We may even choose actions that cause harm to ourselves or to others. Reflecting on these behaviours,
with the help of a psychologist, gives us insight into the reasons we chose these actions and helps us to
learn from our mistakes and make better choices in the future. You do not need to be an existentialist
to benefit from existential therapy; you need only a desire to be happier and a willingness to reflect
upon how your choices are part of the solution. Existential Therapy is an approach to counselling that
helps us to understand ourselves, other people and the world we all inhabit together. Existential
Therapy helps people to build confidence that they are making good choices. Existential Therapy is
not reserved solely for people who suffer from severe psychological problems; it is for everyone who
is having trouble making a good decision when they experience the kind of challenges issued by life.
Existential Therapy provides an opportunity to explore the world including the dreams, fantasies and

Canonical Criteria The purpose of this essay is to discuss and give some explanation and knowledge
of the elements and relevant information as it relates to the Canonical Criteria. The Biblical canon that
we find in Jewish Christian are listed in and throughout the various books in the Bible. They are
recognized as being inspired by God which makes them sacred. They are very profound and valid to
the particular religion or community group of believers as it pertains to their faith and livelihood in the
Kingdom of God. The word canon is derived from the Greek word (kanon) which is define as a reed.

Even though the authenticity has been challenged even rejected by many Biblical critics and scholars.
It would and could be a possibility of proving that the canon were written by apostles. The second is
the orthodoxy. This would go without saying that any canonical book must be orthodox because God
would not permit his word to teach falsehood but only the truth. The positive or strengths would be
that the criterion had to be orthodox or they would be disregard and not worth and disqualified
material by this application of whether or not it was orthodox. The negative or weakness would be that
anything that would violate the orthodox would not be viewed as a canonical. This was demonstrated
in the early church and they did not handle the criterion easily because of their lack of wanting to
acknowledge the Hebrews and the reservation about Revelations (Nicole, 1997).
The third is the christocentricity which Martin Luther describes as Jesus Christ being the center of the
entire book of the Bible. The positive or strength is that there is truth about Jesus Christ being the

Analyzing Violence Aggression in Ice Hockey Players
Running head: Violence Aggression: Ice Hockey
Violence Aggression: Ice Hockey
Abstract
In the arena of sports today there is a continuous subject in every sport hostility and violence.
Aggression can be revealed in a lot of dissimilar methods in sports. In baseball hostility can be
chucking a pitch inside to a player or gliding into second base and captivating the other basemen. In
basketball it can be a foul that is hard and shoving someone to the ground. And in NASCAR it can be
somewhat as little at bouncing another vehicle at a race track. Over the past few years aggression and
violence in sports is growing bigger and bigger. It seems like you can not go a week or two without
the news talking about a fight or argument that has occurred at a sporting event between a couple of
players or teams. Violence Aggression: Ice Hockey
Introduction
For as long as hockey has been in existence, it has always been a violent sport ; the sport is full of
body checks, being knocked from behind, sometimes the misappropriation of the hockey stick, and
even horrible fights. Now all off these are considered satisfactory by hockey admirers to a certain
extent. When a player on the team starts to swings his stick at the opposite team and injury occurs to
the opposite player the ringleader can normally expect to be disciplined for a time that is short, and at
times they are even suspended from the team for a while. But then again when does this violent action
on the ice start to become

NICE Review Essay
Impact of the NICE guideline recommending cessation of antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of
infective endocarditis: before and after study: A Review Thornhill et al. s article on the cessation of
antibiotic prophylaxis and its impact on infective endocarditis examined, both, prescriptions for
antibiotics of a standard premedication dose (3g amoxicillin or 600mg clindamycin) and diagnoses or
deaths due to infective endocarditis between January 2000 and April 2010. The time frame chosen for
this study was critical due to the release of updated NICE guidelines, stating providers should cease
use of any antibiotic prophylaxis for dental and other medical procedures. By examining the time
surrounding the NICE guidelines, the researchers hoped to evaluate any relationship between
premedicative prescriptions and incidents of infective endocarditis. They hypothesized that in order to
see evidence that the NICE guidelines were valid, there would be minimal to no change in rate of
infective endocarditis after the NICE guidelines became effective compared to before, even though the
amount of prescription decreased. The researchers felt that this study was necessary due to the limited
large scale studies relating to recent changes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Did Barbie Influence American Culture

Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Because life in plastic, as the song says, is fantastic. And among all the
chaos of the real world, who wouldn t find the Malibu beach house, the sports car, and the versatile
wardrobe appealing. Even stronger is this desire today, in her almost 58th birthday, with the expansion
of the Barbie lineup to a wider variety of skin colors and body types. The blond headed, white

All this attention that is drawn to her made me wonder about the beginning of the Barbie doll in the
first place. Who created this iconic toy? What were the motives behind the creation? And are these the
first changes ever that Barbie goes through? Having existed for as much as fifty eight years, makes me
speculate on all the periods of time that she has marked. How she influenced American culture, and
how the American culture influenced her. All these provoke my curiosity, because the Barbie doll
concept, I believe, goes beyond the popularity of a toy. Barbie can be considered as an artifact. The
changes she must have gone through, from her creation to now, reflect the impact of so many cultural
periods. And that is why I think that this is a topic viable for research, because it gives us a better

The Vietnam War Was A Significant Moment For Canada
The Vietnam War was a historically significant moment for Canada which followed the First and
Second World War. This was due to Canada s large involvement in helping the South of Vietnam in
their war efforts. Canada plays a large roll in this war costs and their manufacturing for war materials.
One must first know how the war began before understanding how Canada contributed. Although the
start of the Vietnam War had nothing to do with Canada, later events in the war were related to Canada
largely. The beginning of the war is a crucial part in how we got involved in the Vietnam War. On May
7th 1954, Viet Minh had finally won the Battle of Dien Bien Phu marking the end of the First
Indochina War. This was a breakthrough for Vietnam because this meant that France was no longer
involved with Vietnam, and the French would then seize fire. A new government would now rule
Vietnam. The North of Vietnam was becoming communist while the South of Vietnam was becoming
more anti communist. The United States of America feared that if communism took over Vietnam, it
would then start to spread to South East Asia. The United States of America feared this possibility
because it would then be a much greater threat to them than they thought originally. On the 8th of
March 1965 the United States of America decided to take action and form an alliance with South
Vietnam anti communist forces and they sent 3, 500 soldiers to fight in the Vietnam War. This number

Textual Analysis Of Music
I find the process of thinking of something on a conceptual level and turning it into a conceivable
object really intriguing. It requires excellent communication not only with people but also within one s
self; I think this is also the hardest part making something new and different creating. It requires
finding an inspiration and then creating something that other people can understand and relate to
because they have either experienced what the art piece represents or because they have thought of the
same concept. I found it interesting how the four students interpreted the same piece of music
differently and how drastically different their representation of their concepts were. For example,
while one took a political stance, the other took a more philosophical view of good vs. evil. I think this
shows their personality and their thinking style and how they interact with the world. ... Show more

I wouldn t be surprised if Crumb himself had asked himself the same question when composing the

I think they all formed excellent connections with the philosophical inquires of the music they
perceived. Furthermore, they also used interesting interpretation of sound. For example, one of the
girls used silver to show the metallic, unorganized, and sharp aspects of the music. I didn t make this
connection before seeing it but once I saw how she used it, the artistic connection and representation
was clear to me too. It is this part of art I find most intriguing a form of communication of ideas

Reflection Paper On Group Work
COMS2103 was a great experience for me. In the past, I have had very negative group experience.
This was from a lack of attendance by other group members, lack of communication, and simply a
lack of work ethic. I was hesitant before joining COMS2103 because of my past experiences, but I am
so glad I stuck with it. My group was very pleasant to work with and I felt less stressed than before in
other group settings. As this course comes to an end, I am pleased with how our group worked
together and I cannot wait to work with them again in COMS2105. With this being a Community
Studies course, it was assumed that there was going to be a lot of group work. Of course, this turned
out to be true. Like I have said above, I was really nervous to be thrown into group work again. This
time was different, though. On the first day of class, we spent some time getting to know each other. It
turned out that many of us were from the same area and focusing on the same aspects in school. I even
knew Patti and Sam from COMS1100, but there was still some catching up to do. A few of our group
members are from other parts of the province, and even as far as Ontario. This fact was interesting
during discussions as we had a few cultural differences . Beginning any project with this group was
never an issue. Somebody was always ready to start the conversation and the rest of the group was

The Olympic Hockey Game Between The Us And The Ussr
During the Cold war, tensions were high between the US and the USSR. The two countries always
wanted to show that they were the most dominant. One of the ways that the USSR showed dominance
was through the Olympics and ice hockey. The hockey game between the US and the USSR during the
1980 Winter Olympics was a turning point in the Cold War. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic
(USSR) was said to be the best of all the teams in Olympic hockey. The 1980 Olympic hockey game
between the US and the USSR was a significant turning point in the Cold War and also reflected the
tension of it.
In the 1960s the United States suffered through the horrible tragedy of John F. Kennedy s
assassination. This left most of the American families heart broken. This showed other countries that
the United States can be conquered. In the 1970s, the United States had faced some serious economic
problems. One severe problem was inflation, meaning the cost of goods and services were increasing.
These rising prices created a problem for all the families in America. Later there was a conflict in
Vietnam, the Vietnam War. This turned into battle ground for the Cold War because Communist
countries such as the Soviet Union and china armed North Vietnam (Pierce, 2005). Given that the US
opposed the spread of communism, they had to go in and fight. This made tensions high between the
US and the USSR.

Chipotle Case Study Essay
Part 3
Chipotle s first store opened in 1993, and since then has grown to more than 900 stores in the United
States. However, Chipotle s experimentation in international markets has evolved slowly. In 2008,
Chipotle opened its first restaurant outside of the US, in Toronto, Canada. In 2010, a second restaurant
opened in Toronto and in 2012, a third in Vancouver. Chipotle has also expanded to Europe, with its
first European restaurant opening in 2010 in London of the United Kingdom. As of today, seven
restaurants have opened in the London area. Chipotle blames the slow growth in the United Kingdom
on British unfamiliarity with Mexican food. However, several locally owned burrito chains have

As recently as last year Chipotle was the victim of a pork shortage. In January of 2015, it cut ties with
a supplier that violated its standards, which ban the use of hormones or antibiotics that require pigs to
have access to the outdoors and to deeply bedded barns. After dropping the supplier, Chipotle had a
tough time finding a replacement. As a result, hundreds of restaurants were unable to sell carnitas, a
popular menu item. If Chipotle expands even more internationally, it could continue to run into this
problem, and it could expand to other ingredients. In order to meet the demand, Chipotle looks for
many of its ingredients outside of the United States. For example, in order to back their commitment
to source 100 percent grass fed cows, Chipotle has started to source beef from Australia. The
organization s reasoning behind this decision is that not enough farmers based in the US follow a truly
organic protocol. Too many farmers raising cattle in the US are using hormones and antibiotics. In
contrast, Australian raised cows spend their entire lives in pastures, eating grass or forages, such as

Essay about The Odyssey as a Hero Journey
All of us have similar experiences. We share in the life journey of growth, development, and
transformation. We live the same stories…the trappings might be different, the twists and turns that
create suspense might be different from culture to culture, the particular characters may take different
forms, but underneath it all, it s the same story, drawn from the same experiences (Linda Seger,
Creating
Myth, 1).
All people face trials and tribulations throughout their life. Thus, what defines one from one s fellow
human beings is not the trials themselves, but how one overcomes the challenges along the journey, as
well as the psychological and physical lessons one learns from the actions engaged. Heroes, as

For one month Odysseus refuses to leave his safe home in peaceful and bountiful Ithaca. The reader is
not told of the rationale behind his final decision to join the war; however, one must assume that he
believes he will be successful, returning home with many spoils of war, or that he will receive honor
for participating. His decision to leave Ithaca cannot be simply based on a whim: he is a young king
with many responsibilities, and while he rules his land with great strength, he is inexperienced. Thus,
the reasons for initiating his journey most probably include the experience and maturity he will gain
fighting the Trojans.
One can ascertain that the actual catalyst that enters into Odysseus life is the Trojan War itself. The
war represents a first step for
Odysseus; after all, while it is his trickery that eventually wins the war for the Achaens (it was his idea
to build the large wooden horse in which the Achaen army hid and from which they successfully
defeated
Troy, we are introduced to Odysseus as the great tactician (Book
VII, 232 301). Cunning is a trait he already possesses: it cannot be the object of his journey; it merely
starts him off. Yet he must initially survive the battle, and his survival proves his capacity to undertake
the journey, moving him to the next stage of the Hero
Journey.
The Second stage of the Hero Journey is the most visible. It consists of the trials that

The Wasp Factory Essay
A Gothic horror story of quite exceptional quality...macabre, bizarre and...quite impossible to put

The above quote is the response of the Financial Times to the best selling novel, The Wasp Factory ,
and in my opinion, truer words were never spoken. I myself had to force the book out of my hands in
the early hours of the morning on several occasions. This clearly says something about the sheer
power of Iain Bank s debut novel. Whether you love it or hate it, once you have read the first page you

He in fact likes his brother, and got on well with him, so you may ask why then did he feel the need to
dispose of his brother. Well, according to Frank, the main reason that he and his brother always got on
so well was because he knew from an early age that he was not long for this world, so Frank had tried
to make his time as enjoyable as possible. Paul is killed by a German bomb that was uncovered by a
powerful storm the night before Paul met his tragic end. However, right up to the end, Frank is very
kind to Paul. His death is quick and painless. Frank tells Paul that the bomb is a bell, and if he hits it
hard enough, a sound will come out. So, Frank runs to the top of a nearby dune, Paul hits the bomb, it
explodes, and Frank s murder tally rises to two. Frank s main reason for killing his brother at this time
is that he feels that finding the bomb is not only an opportunity, it is a symbol, a sign that he must
obey.
So now to Franks third and final murder, that of cousin Esmerelda. The reason that Esmerelda dies
could be seen as petty by many people, but to Frank, it is valid. Frank kills Esmerelda because she is a
girl. He feels that, since he has already killed two boys, he owes it to the world to balance it out a bit,
and Esmerelda is the unfortunate female that has been chosen to be disposed of. The most interesting
detail about the murders that Frank has committed is that he

Theme Of Women In Oliver Twist
Dickens wrote in the Victorian era when women were supposed to be at home and perform domestic
tasks. The Victorians admired women that were sexually pure and capable of self sacrifice. To be pure
was not easy in the Victorian era, especially not for the women that may have to prostitute themselves
in order to survive. Dickens was well aware that these women were victims of society, poverty and
men, and he criticized the cruelty of the Victorian society and peoples view of fallen women. Oliver
Twist is an example of such criticism. Fallen women did not get a second chance in life. Women had a
particularly hard time making a living. Oliver Twist spends his first ten years in a workhouse as an
orphan, mistreated, abused and belonging to the lowest class in society. Dickens Oliver Twist contains
several themes, including prostitution, thievery and fencing. The characters in Oliver Twist can be
divided into groups of good and evil. The groups are very different from each other but they all have
one thing in common, they struggle with moral issues. To have good morals and virtues was very
important in the Victorian era, especially for women. The British middle class women were at home

The Liberal Arts Education Is Better Than A Education
Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a
vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum
includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy,
literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and
judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam webster.com). As students wanting
to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either you want to
grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn what best interests
you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how they can benefit you.
We often hear things like, A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job. or A liberal arts degree is a
luxury not a necessity. Although this is what the majority of the people who are not aware about the
actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar,
and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles Murray, will reveal to us why one
gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Murray argues that a liberal arts education is only for
the elite, but I believe that they shouldn t be the only ones to attend because my vision of a liberal arts

Death in Mrs. Dalloway
In Mrs. Dalloway, references to life and death are seen frequently throughout the entire novel. It
would not be correct to claim that Mrs. Dalloway focuses more on one or the other, for the novel
brings attention to both life and death. Virginia Woolf exhibits these profound ideas through the
thoughts of her characters in Mrs. Dalloway. The thought of death is constantly lurking in the thoughts
of each character, and it makes even the most ordinary events become meaningful, and sometimes
threatening. From the very beginning of the novel, the reader is confronted with thoughts of death
from the main character, Clarissa Dalloway. When running her errand, she plummets into deep
thought about her death and what would follow it, Did it matter then, she asked herself... that she must
inevitably cease completely; all this must go on without her; did she resent it; or did it not become
consoling to believe that death ended absolutely? But somehow in the streets of London, on the ebb
and flow of things, here, there, she survived,...she being part... of the trees at home; of the house there,
ugly, rambling, all to bits and pieces as it was; part of people she had never met; being laid out like a
mist between the people she knew best... (9). The reader doesn t even get a full chapter into the book

Character Analysis Of Mice And Men
John Steinbeck sets the scene of his novella, Of Mice and Men, in the Salinas River Valley, a few
miles south of Soledad. The time period of the novella is the 1930 s during the Great Depression. The
Great Depression began in 1929 after the U.S. had a major financial crisis. People lost all of their
money and their homes when the stock market crashed. Many men became migrant farm workers who
would travel from farm to farm, working for just enough money for food and a few belongings. John
Steinbeck grew up in the Salinas River Valley during the Depression. In his novella, of Mice and Men,
Steinbeck uses the characters Candy, Curley s wife, and Crooks to prove people will do anything to

expensive clothes. His father is the boss on the farm and has a lot of money. Curley s wife tries to talk
to the boys but they don t trust her. She says, Why can t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I
get awful lonely (Steinbeck 86). This quote shows that no one ever tries or wants to talk to her. Curley
s wife complains to Lennie about how lonely she is and that she just wants to talk to people. As the
book continues, she explains to Lennie why she never gets to talk to anyone. She says, You can talk to
people, but I can t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad (Steinbeck 87). This quote shows that
Curley is very controlling over his wife and only lets her talk to him. Curley s wife talks to Lennie
even though he is very intimidating. She is desperate to talk to anyone so she flirts with Lennie and
the other men to get their attention.
Lastly, Steinbeck uses Crooks to show the things people are willing to do to not be lonely. Crooks is
the black crippled stable buck who works on the farm. He is the only black man for miles and has no
one to talk with, or to be his friend. Crooks tells Lennie, A guy needs somebody to be near him . . . A

CLEAR MISSION STATEMENT AND VALUES
Having a clearly articulated mission that is prominently communicated to all employees cultivates an
intentional culture an environment where people know why they do what they do, and love their work
all the more for it. Mission statements, however, are much easier to write than to make into reality.
You need to realize that a company s culture will hinge on its ability to make the words on paper
meaningful, translating the intangible into something that has real worth and impact. * EMPLOYEE
RECOGNITION FOR SMALL AND BIG CONTRIBUTIONS
Recognition provides incentives for employees to do the best work they can do. But as much as
Google likes to seize opportunities to acknowledge strong performances, the company is equally
willing to celebrate failure as well. Google products are known to always be in Beta mistakes are
praised. Before she became the COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg was a vice president at Google
whose responsibilities included managing their automated advertising system. When she made a
mistake that cost Google several million dollars, she admitted her error to co founder Larry Page,

Level 3 Health and Social Care, Unit 5 P2
Unit 5 P2 Explain what they are, their functions and where they are found. Then go into detail about
two organs, with their functions, what tissues they are made of and where they are found in the body.
Tissues: Tissues are groups of similar cells that have specific functions. In this piece of work I ll talk
about these types of cells: Epithelial Tissues: Epithelial are the lining of internal and external surfaces
and body cavities, including tubes/channels (ducts) carrying secretions from glands. Epithelial tissues
can be made of several layers of cells (called compound epithelia), or a single layer known as simple
epithelia. The lowest layer of cells is attached to the basement membrane for support and connection.

The matrix of a tissue can be secreted by the connective tissues within the body. The functions of
connective tissues are to transport materials around the body to give support to the weak areas to
protect and support the body. Body Organs: The body has different organs that work together and they
make up a system such as the Respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal
system and the nervous system. These are the main systems within the body and are made up of
individual organs that then work together. For instance, the respiratory system is made of the nose,
lungs, heart and this lets us breathe. Blood: Blood is a bodily fluid that transports oxygen and nutrients
to the cells within the body. Blood has plasma that lets the different types of blood travel round the
body. Plasma contains proteins that have different functions for the blood clotting, transporting and
defence organisms and osmotic organisations. The plasma carries the red blood cell which has a
elastic membrane so it can fit through the small capillaries within the body. Red blood cells can be
also known as erythrocytes they don t have a nucleus when they are matured which gives a bigger
space for oxygen, although as there is no nuclei the red blood cells can t divide so they only live for
around 120 days. Red blood cells gain their colour from haemoglobin, oxygenated blood which is
known as arterial blood which flows through the arteries coming from the heart and

  • 2. Creative Teacher Research Paper When I first started creative writing, I knew only two things about the teacher: she had purple and gray hair and she was an ex marine. She walked into class and looked appalled that we had the audacity to sit in five perfectly straight rows of five chairs. The first thing she made us do was put our desks in a circle. It was right then and there that I wondered what the heck I had gotten myself into. My creative writing teacher is by far the teacher who has had the most impact on my life. She is a realist and understood that not everything in life was all good and fine. Real life is gritty, she would say. Let your writing reflect that. Before that, there was always a set of rules to follow in writing: no cursing, no violence, no true depictions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Elephants Cant Dance Essay Who says elephants can t dance? the book is an account of IBM s historic turnaround as told by, the chairman and CEO of IBM, Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. He led IBM from April 1993 until March 2002. He raised IBM from the brink of bankruptcy and mainframe obscurity back to the forefront of the technology. Book tells the story of IBM s competitive and cultural transformation. It is an excellent case study in managing a crisis, principles of leadership and a thoughtful reflection on computer industry. With decades of experience at some of America s top companies Mckinsey, American Express, RJR Nabisco, Louis Gerstner s insights into management and leadership are applicable to any business, at any level. The lessons learnt from running these successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By 1993, the computer industry had changed rapidly with a large number of smaller companies dealing in fragmented solutions as opposed to IBM which was offering a complete solution. The company was on its way to losing $16 billion and it was on the watch list for extinction. Its lumbering size, the PC era and its insular corporate culture were the reasons it was heading to obsolescence. Who Says elephants can t dance? .... Metaphor of the title talks about IBM, The Elephant , suggests the size (with presence in over 44 countries, 2300 shareholders, 90000 staff) and bureaucracy of a multinational company and its ability, to dance , to become profitable after more than a decade of losses. Gerstner explains the situation of IBM and other small companies in the marketplace as: Big matters. Size can be leveraged. Breadth and depth allow for greater investment, greater risk taking, and longer patience for future payoffs. It isn t a question of whether elephants can prevail over ants. Anterior to the arch, the body (1) is the thick, broad part of the bone that serves to support and bear weight. Between each individual body is the intervertebral disk space. The vertebral arch is made of several parts. Pedicles (2) extend posteriorly from the body and curves to the laminae (2). These two parts encircle the vertebral foramen with the body. Above and below the pedicles are the superior and inferior vertebral notch, respectively, and they form the intervertebral foramina when stacked. Zygopophyseal joints are formed by the superior and inferior articular processes. At the junctions of the pedicle and lamina, the transverse processes (2) protrude laterally. Air Liquide, A Global Company INTRO (DIVYA) Air Liquide, a global company that specializes in gases, technologies and services for the industry and health, was founded in France in 1902 by Georges Claude and Paul Delorme. Shortly after acquiring investments from 24 shareholders within a short period, their incredible journey began (in text citation). Today, they operate on a global scale, present in over 80 countries (in text citation). To focus primarily on Air Liquide s activities based in the United States and Canada over the past 25 years, interviews were conducted with the following employees of the multi billion dollar corporation; Mr. Gabriel Constantin, Mr. Slim Naanaa, Mr. M. Sundar, Mr. Benjamin Jurcik and a retired employee who wished to remain anonymous. Their insight on their employer was very uniform regardless of the department they work or have worked under, which perfectly illustrated the culture and overall values instilled throughout the company. It became clear that all informants believed that constant innovation within a company is crucial to maintain a substantial advantage over its competitors. According to our retired informant, Air Liquide promoted their company on an international scale for only the past 25 years by focusing on finding new purpose for the gas to improve consumers processes. He explains that one of the main goals of research and development is to pursue related diversification. As an example, our informant described the process by which fibreglass is made. ... Republican President Ronald Reagan served as Commander in chief from January 1981 to January of 1989, holding his position in office for two terms. When Reagan took his oath into office, he inherited prior damage from predecessor Jimmy Carter, including the issue of the Iranian Hostage Crisis as well as damage inflicted by the Vietnam War from years prior. Reagan s start in politics was not the normal approach. Coming from a successful career as a popular Hollywood actor, Reagan acquired his interest in politics in a more unconventional way. His political views quickly shifted from liberal to conservative and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reagan inherited a misery index (the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates) of 19.99%, and when he left office it had dropped to 9.72% . Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created. Not only did he cut tax rates, but the Tax Reform Act of 1986 simplified the income tax code by eliminating many tax shelters, reducing the number of deductions and tax brackets. Reagan s dream of tax returns fitting on a postcard has been nullified as Congress has regressed and continued to make the tax code more complex, necessitating a new push for reform. Reagan played a large part in restrengthening the weak, ineffectual, and vulnerable military which left behind after President Carters time in office. The Reagan administration funded research and development of weapons systems, including stealth technology and precision weaponry, later used in Persian Gulf wars. Reagan s buildup was the largest peacetime defense enlargement in history, which included larger training ranges and military pay increases, helped invigorate the American military from its Vietnam War era despondency. • 7. Biography Of Isaac Newton s Three Laws Of Motion Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who had developed his three laws of motion by the age of 23. He was born in 1642 the same year the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei died. Galileo s work helped to influence or set the stage for the development and creation of Newton s three laws. Newton s three laws of motion consists of the first law which is the concepts of inertia, second law which is relating acceleration to its cause and lastly the third law which is action and reaction. The laws of motion were interpreted in the most famous and influential book of all time called, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica created by Newton in 1687. The book was often known as Principia used to explain and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only way to change an objects motion is for it to be impacted by an unbalanced force. Next is Newton s second law of motion also known as the Law of Force and Acceleration . He was the first to recognize the relationship between force and mass in the production of acceleration. This discovery became one of the most central rules of nature that was able to shape the form of physics. The law states; The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object . This is usually expressed by the equation Force= mass x acceleration (F=ma). The law also states that the smaller the object the higher the acceleration there will be and vise versa the larger the object the smaller the acceleration will be. The acceleration of an object depends on the net force acted on the object and the mass of the object. If the mass and net force is both doubled then the acceleration will remain unchanged. This law also gives a explanation for why objects with different masses are able to fall with equal/same acceleration. If the object is only acted on by the gravitational force then air resistance is negligible which is called free fall. During free fall the acceleration of the objects also depends on its inertia and uses the equation Force/mass=gravity (F/m=g), g always ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis of Karen Russell Analysis of Karen Russell s St. Lucy s Home for girls Raised by Wolves St. Lucy s Home for girls Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell s collection of fantastical short stories take all that is mundane and fractures it into a fantastical world with humor, dramatic tone, or cultural/religious undertones. Russell whirls a reader into her stories with her capability to encase a reader in the story with her repetition of one s senses. Constantly brining in the senses of a reader brought in the smells of a surrounding from the protagonist or in this case the narrator. In St. Lucy s Home for girls Raised by Wolves, our narrator, Claudette, speaks from the mind of a half human half wolf in transition. Of the pack s reaction to the nuns, how Sister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Claudette becomes known as the protagonist and narrator shortly after this switch. After every sense, emotion, and interaction was a pack experience, for Russell to cut this tie and create a story that is of an individual is a subtle experience at first; from a united thought process that slowly turn individual to self centered and selfish. This is apparent in Claudette s frame of mind towards her little sister Mirabella, from the pack worrying about Mirabella (230) to Claudette singular thoughts and emotions toward her littlest sister . This switch epitomizes the coming to age alone tone that Russell creates, initially the pack protected each other, thought as one, and were connected in every way till they adapted to the new environment, becoming singular units growing up isolated from each other snarl at one another for no reason (229) becoming accustomed to thinking individually as an independent person. These stories although diverse in content and storyline Russell connects each to another almost subconsciously. They share similar struggle of coming of age stories, stories of isolation in the first person that reveal one trait or another within the battle. Despite the fact that is the same reasoning with each story it has a new outcome, therefor the stories are not repetitive while the elements used might be. • 9. Why I Am A Motor Skill When observing Presley, with her body size you noticed she is larger than the other children around her. I was informed by one of the caregivers she is the oldest out of the children there. Not knowing actual height and weight, comparing her to the other children, she was taller and looked fuller. Presley is two years old and if fully walking. Under the gross motor skill, the third element in the dynamic system; practice unbalanced, wide legged, short strides become steady, smooth gait, Presley was surpassed that stage. She walked with her arms down, not out, and legs were close together. The other children around her seemed to be in the practice phase. One fine motor skill I noticed was a mouth skill, pronunciation. Her words were clear, making it easier to understand what she asked for or talking in general. She said zapatoes , which is a spanish word for shoes and was said clearly and understood. Presley grasping was more focused on toys, while I was there she did not get into any altercations(pulling hair/biting) with the other children. This is referring to animals who have less than three cones of vision. There is a group of wild Neotropical monkeys that have polymorphic vision. This means the group has members that either have dichromatic or trichromatic vision. The thought is the trichromatic members can find fruits or fresh leaves better than those with dichromatic vision because of distinguishable colors of fruit that can be seen with trichromatic vision (Fedigan 1). This idea fits the heterozygote superiority hypothesis. At first the hypothesis seemed correct based on a study that used tamarins because the one with the three cones of vision was able to spot patches of food more easily. The issue that comes into play is that there is no good evidence for wild populations. Work that was done on Capuchins to see who had an advantage on feeding based on the type of vision they had. The result was that neither seemed to have a significant advantage over the other. Thus, what defines one from one s fellow human beings is not the trials themselves, but how one overcomes the challenges along the journey, as well as the psychological and physical lessons one learns from the actions engaged. The reader is not told of the rationale behind his final decision to join the war; however, one must assume that he believes he will be successful, returning home with many spoils of war, or that he will receive honor for participating. His decision to leave Ithaca cannot be simply based on a whim: he is a young king with many responsibilities, and while he rules his land with great strength, he is inexperienced. Thus, the reasons for initiating his journey most probably include the experience and maturity he will gain fighting the Trojans. One can ascertain that the actual catalyst that enters into Odysseus life is the Trojan War itself. The war represents a first step for Odysseus; after all, while it is his trickery that eventually wins the war for the Achaens (it was his idea to build the large wooden horse in which the Achaen army hid and from which they successfully defeated Troy, we are introduced to Odysseus as the great tactician (Book VII, 232 301). Cunning is a trait he already possesses: it cannot be the object of his journey; it merely starts him off. Yet he must initially survive the battle, and his survival proves his capacity to undertake the journey, moving him to the next stage of the Hero Journey. The Second stage of the Hero Journey is the most visible. It consists of the trials that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. The Wasp Factory Essay A Gothic horror story of quite exceptional quality...macabre, bizarre and...quite impossible to put down. The above quote is the response of the Financial Times to the best selling novel, The Wasp Factory , and in my opinion, truer words were never spoken. I myself had to force the book out of my hands in the early hours of the morning on several occasions. This clearly says something about the sheer power of Iain Bank s debut novel. Whether you love it or hate it, once you have read the first page you are instantly struck by it s brilliance. Throughout this essay, I intend to explore the mind and characteristics of the main character, Frank Cauldhame. Throughout the story, Frank s character is brought out through his experiences, of ... Well, according to Frank, the main reason that he and his brother always got on so well was because he knew from an early age that he was not long for this world, so Frank had tried to make his time as enjoyable as possible. Paul is killed by a German bomb that was uncovered by a powerful storm the night before Paul met his tragic end. However, right up to the end, Frank is very kind to Paul. His death is quick and painless. Frank tells Paul that the bomb is a bell, and if he hits it hard enough, a sound will come out. So, Frank runs to the top of a nearby dune, Paul hits the bomb, it explodes, and Frank s murder tally rises to two. Frank s main reason for killing his brother at this time is that he feels that finding the bomb is not only an opportunity, it is a symbol, a sign that he must obey. So now to Franks third and final murder, that of cousin Esmerelda. The reason that Esmerelda dies could be seen as petty by many people, but to Frank, it is valid. Frank kills Esmerelda because she is a girl. He feels that, since he has already killed two boys, he owes it to the world to balance it out a bit, and Esmerelda is the unfortunate female that has been chosen to be disposed of. The most interesting detail about the murders that Frank has committed is that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Theme Of Women In Oliver Twist Dickens wrote in the Victorian era when women were supposed to be at home and perform domestic tasks. The Victorians admired women that were sexually pure and capable of self sacrifice. To be pure was not easy in the Victorian era, especially not for the women that may have to prostitute themselves in order to survive. Dickens was well aware that these women were victims of society, poverty and men, and he criticized the cruelty of the Victorian society and peoples view of fallen women. Oliver Twist is an example of such criticism. Fallen women did not get a second chance in life. Women had a particularly hard time making a living. Oliver Twist spends his first ten years in a workhouse as an orphan, mistreated, abused and belonging to the lowest class in society. Dickens Oliver Twist contains several themes, including prostitution, thievery and fencing. The characters in Oliver Twist can be divided into groups of good and evil. The groups are very different from each other but they all have one thing in common, they struggle with moral issues. To have good morals and virtues was very important in the Victorian era, especially for women. The British middle class women were at home taking care of the household and ... • 32. The Liberal Arts Education Is Better Than A Education Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy, literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam webster.com). As students wanting to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either you want to grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn what best interests you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how they can benefit you. We often hear things like, A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job. or A liberal arts degree is a luxury not a necessity. Although this is what the majority of the people who are not aware about the actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar, and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles Murray, will reveal to us why one gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Murray argues that a liberal arts education is only for the elite, but I believe that they shouldn t be the only ones to attend because my vision of a liberal arts college is one where all students come in with the appropriate amount of ... • 34. Death in Mrs. Dalloway In Mrs. Dalloway, references to life and death are seen frequently throughout the entire novel. It would not be correct to claim that Mrs. Dalloway focuses more on one or the other, for the novel brings attention to both life and death. Virginia Woolf exhibits these profound ideas through the thoughts of her characters in Mrs. Dalloway. The thought of death is constantly lurking in the thoughts of each character, and it makes even the most ordinary events become meaningful, and sometimes threatening. From the very beginning of the novel, the reader is confronted with thoughts of death from the main character, Clarissa Dalloway. When running her errand, she plummets into deep thought about her death and what would follow it, Did it matter then, she asked herself... that she must inevitably cease completely; all this must go on without her; did she resent it; or did it not become consoling to believe that death ended absolutely? As the book continues, she explains to Lennie why she never gets to talk to anyone. She says, You can talk to people, but I can t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad (Steinbeck 87).
