The Bobo Doll Experiment
The study done by Ross Bandura was the Bobo Doll Experiment. This study was done in 1961.
He had a total of 72 participants 36 girls and 36 boys around the ages of 3 and 6 years old.
Bandura was trying to add credence to his belief that all humans behavior was learned, through
social imitation and copying, rather than inherited through genetic factors (Shuttleworth). Bandra
designed an experiment that would allow some to watch aggressive actors and others to watch non
aggressive actors. Bandra decided to use children for the experiment because children tend to have
less social conditioning and the also have less instruction and teaching of rules of society than
adults subjects (Shuttleworth). This experiment was setup so that 24 children

Essay on Violent Video Games Raise Aggression
Throughout history man kind has always searched for ways to entertain himself, each time
developing new activities and games. Video games have become a very popular way to spend
time and have fun from the 1970 s up to now. With new developments appeared different video
game genres from adventure to racing, but the violent video games appear to be the most popular
ones (Shin, 2003), for example: shooters, fighting and video games where you have to eliminate,
destroy, or kill your enemies. Video games have become very influential on children and adults
(Stafford, 1999). With violent video games humans are more prone to act aggressively, to have
aggressive thoughts and become numb towards violence (Harding, 2009). Apart from these they are

Now a day however VDU s have evolved and we created LCD s with higher quality and standard
giving the opportunity for violent video games to be more graphic and real (Stafford, 1999) like
for example when characters get shot a large spray of blood covers the walls and floor near the
character (Shin, 2003). The processor of the consoles has also been a key factor to the
development of more real looking violent video games. From Intel s 4004 microprocessor up to
Intel s core 2 duo E8500 processor we have seen how computers are able to do more tasks in less
time. This development has given a way for violent video games to be more free in the sense
that more actions can be made, the virtual worlds are bigger and there are more objectives to be
done or enemies to be eliminated. C.The impact of the issue Violence in video games has been
proved to raise the aggression on video gamers in the short and long term, whether it s in their
language, attitude or actions. Also video games not only cause this but they also decrease
prosocial behavior and empathy (Anderson, 2010). Violent video games have been one of the
main reasons why students decide to shoot everyone in an educational institution like the well
known Columbine Massacre in 1999. [They] liked to play Doom (a computer game) in the
afternoons , No one can say for sure why...theories including...violent video games (Doom)

Gospel Music Research Paper
The Progression from spirituals to Black Gospel Music
Many people would refer to gospel music as religious songs or songs regarding to life as a
Christian. Gospel music varies, which gives an alternative to Christian music with a mix of secular
music. With it being many styles of Christian music, the performance, the lyrics, instruments and
the formation, gives gospel music different meanings. To most, gospel is simply thanks and
praise and worship to the Lord. The establishment of gospel goes way back with European and
African roots. The first known use of gospel was in 1874 when a European songwriter named
Philip P. Bliss titled a songbook as Gospel Songs. Tribal African music was highly different than
European music in major ways. Europeans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dorsey is responsible for discovering and nurturing the career of the world s first gospel
superstar, Mahalia Jackson (Ayubu 11). Mahalia Jackson, known as the Queen of Gospel was
the first famous gospel singer. According to Dorsey, she asked him to coach her, and for two
months they worked together on technique and repertoire. They would tour together in the
1940s (TMCod). Mahalia wanted to sing gospel and who was better to help her with this? Mahalia
describes gospel music as The blues are songs of despair, but gospel songs are the songs of hope (
Make a Joyful Noise: The Spread of Gospel Music ). Not only did he create the first famous
gospel singer, but also the first gospel choir and choruses. Thomas Dorsey made the first black
gospel publishing company called Dorsey s House of Music founded his own gospel choir and
was the founder and was also the first president of the National convention of Gospel Choir and
Choruses. Dorsey had a fellow blues musician that helped him with his publishing business,
which became so successful that people nationwide called any piece of gospel sheet music a

President Dwight D. Eisenhower
President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the beloved and protective father figure of post World War II,
is perhaps most revered for his competence, and whose leadership as a Commander In Chief kept
a nation safe during an unsettling period of the Cold War. He is highly regarded as one of our
country s greatest military leaders; however, he is considered a good, but not a great president.
Great presidents inherently possess a visionary leadership role; that is they know the direction in
which they want to steer the country to, where it came from, and where it currently is. They are
leaders with a moral compass in a sense, as they are able to clarify and quantify the needs , wants,

The current Obama administration appears to be domestic focused as well because his

was, unequivocally a foreign affairs president. After all what else could we expect out of WWII

more strongly than in the arena of foreign affairs. In describing his ascendancy to the presidency, it
is a testament to his leadership and composition of character, intellect, and party organization, as
well as what Niccolo Machiavelli ( The Prince ) would call fortuna , or, the mysterious interaction
of fate and chance. As immensely popular as he was, the nation readily chose his nomination as
much as he accepted it. Arthur Krock the, New York Times Washington Bureau Chief said on

Women Objectification By Jennifer Aniston
The issue of women objectification in media has gained a new meaning when Jennifer Aniston
wrote her essay which was provoked by the news about her possible pregnancy. She appealed the
mass media claiming that they should stop writing about women body and appearance. In this
sense, the objectification mean sexual objectification . By itself, the objectification does not only
apply to women, and it is not just about appearance. For example, the employee is also an object,
as he/she seeks to sell his/her work, and employers choose which workers are more profitable to
rent. Basically, the word objectification is used only in relation to advertisingthat is not quite right.

Of course, it is often accompanied by low self esteem (and problems provoked by that), eating
disorders, not always successful plastic surgery and a lot of wasted effort, money, and time. Even
it is called self objectification, it is clear that some subjectivity remains in man always. It turns out,
that in the man with self objectification there simultaneously aligned the self awareness as the
subject, and the acceptance of the role of the object. It happens like this: a person realizes that he
/she has a function (for example, cooking, or emotional support); understands that there are people
who need it; and does it for them to get an approval or to receive some bonuses without any internal
motivation. The actions with the internal and external motivation may not be different outwardly,
but in fact this is a huge difference between self objectification and action for yourself. For
example, there are two girls sunbathing topless on the beach. One of them doing it knowing that
her appear is attractive to others and she will get their approval, when the second do that because
she wants an even tan or something

Vocal Fry Research Paper
The terms vocal fry and up talk are two ways to describe some teenagers talk now. Vocal fry
means when one talks like they are choking or out of breath. This frequently happens at the end
of a sentence. The definition of up talk is when one says a sentence with a question in there or
answering a question with a question. When one talks about up talk, some people automatically
think about teenager girls. People thinks it is annoying and do not understand why these girls talk
in this way. However, teen girls are actually not the only group of people who talk in that way. Up
talk is something most people do, and it is almost like a nature that humans have. The cause of
people using up talk is when people are not sure what they are talking about,

Joan Of Arc And The Three Heroes Of The Present
People have many ideas and different ways of thinking of what makes a person a hero. A hero
can be defined as a person that is recognized and known for their acts of courage, has achieved a
great accomplishment or goal, or has noble qualities. According to Akbar S. Ahmed, a hero is
someone who is endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind, sets out to achieve a
near impossible goal and succeeds in the face of serious opposition (8). This research paper will
analyze the acts of three heroes from the past (pre 1700) with three heroes of the present (1950 to
present). The three heroes of the past are Christopher Columbus, Joan of Arc, and Captain John

Jamestown and for providing food for the settlers through trade with the Native Americans. He

considered to be the map of the region for 60 years. According to Cooper, John Smith deserves,
perhaps, a place among the iconic founding father figures of the nation. (6). Smith was one of the
original governing council members and his explorations were a part of what shaped the nation.
Cooper also stated, As a council member in the Jamestown settlement and because of his
explorations, his map, and its role in attracting settlers, John Smith helped shape his time and the
future. (6). Smith would meet Ahmed s definition of a hero because he was endowed with
extraordinary qualities of heart and mind. The council was proving to be ineffective so Smith
stepped forward as the leader and the moving spirit (Arber, xiii) to lead the expeditions. The
colonists were suffering from malnutrition due to the lack of food, disease, and Indian attacks.
Smith set out to achieve a near impossible goal when he chose to lead the expeditions and traded
with the Indians for food, which was also dangerous and led to his capture by the Indians. Smith
was eventually spared and succeeded in becoming the leader of the settlement, all while facing

Negative Effects On Animal Pollution
has an extremely negative impact on many animals. Water polluted with different chemicals can
cause a decline of population in some species; On the other hand water polluted with nutrients can
lead to huge growth of toxic algae which when eaten by other animals may cause serious diseases
and death to these animals. Persistent organic pollutants contains the growth of fish and wipe out
their breed. Chemical runoff from farms run into oceans, seas, lakes and rivers. Littering can also
lead to death of many animals because of toxic substances in trash, such as oil, plastic, detergents
and pesticides (How PollutionAffect Animals). Oil spills affect marine animals and sea birds.
The oil makes the water harder to swim through, making the animals exhausted, and also making
it harder for it to breathe (Levete 12). Oil spills damages the growth of sea birds (Effects of
Pollution on People...). Animals can also die by getting themselves entangled in one of the many
litter items dumped in the water. Plastic waste can cause dangers to animals. Around one hundred
million tons of plastic is produced each year, ten percent ends up in the sea. A million sea birds
and mammals are killed each year by plastic waste (5 Ways Water Pollution is Killing Animals).
Plastic bags are killing the animals in the water. The bags can suffocate or choke the animal, by
getting caught around it s body (Levete 12). Noise pollutionis also becoming a huge problem for

Cardiovascular Health Risk Factors Among Americans
Cardiovascular disease has gained a global attention due to the overwhelming number of cases
reported annually. Stakeholders from various health monitoring agencies, health care providers,
and government agencies have come together to tackle the disease, and reduce morbidity and
mortality. Organizations such as the Million Hearts Initiative, the American Heart Association
(AHA) 2020 Goals, and the Healthy People 2020 goals have established public health objectives
aimed at targeting cardiovascular risk factors, and improving the outcome of the disease (Sidney,
Rosamond, Howard Luepker, 2013). The aspirations of the AHA 2020 objectives are to enhance the
cardiovascular well being of all Americans by 20%, as well as decrease related deaths from
cardiovascular diseases and strokeby 20% (Sidney et al., 2013). Statistical analysis of the
predominance of cardiovascular health risk factors among Americans is overwhelming and
therefore needs immediate action. According to Go et al. (2013), about 31.9 million adults 20
years or older have total serum cholesterol levels greater than or equals to 240 mg/dL. According
to a statistical data recorded between 2007 to 2010, 33% of United States adults aged 20 years

Relationship between Art and Technology in 1960s
Spurred on by exhibitions, industry sponsorship and education programmes, the artists of the 1960s
began to grapple with the space age. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the
world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and
Constructivist precedent. Technologydid not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s
adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the
end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The
negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean
Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely
s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg s Soundings (1968) will be used to
explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which
artist and scientist collaborated.
The technological works of Tinguely can be classified as kinetic due to their incorporation of
mechanical movement. For Pontus HultГ©n the inclusion of movement implied a complete
rejection of the holy values of art , the traditional characteristics of sculpture were abandoned and
kineticism projected sculpture onto a different course. Tinguely, like Rauschenberg, used
technology as a means to question and investigate his society. For the artist of the 1960s
technology was a tool; it offered new

Applying Kathy s Rational Choice Theory
Another aspect of rational choice theory is the amount of pleasure that is received form a crime.
Receiving pleasure from a crime can be a sexual gratification, monetary rewards that make one
happy, or any other enjoyable aspect an individual receives from committing a crime. If there is
pleasure involved in the crime, then the offender is more likely to keep committing a crime
whereas if someone commits a crime and there was little to no pleasure involved in it, they will
be less likely to keep committing the crime. Kathy committed her crimes over several years and

A Social Media Marketing Plan
Marketing has evolved and grown tremendously throughout the years. If you have a Facebook or

To launch social media marketing campaigns, all businesses need to do is sign up for free with each
social network they want to use. Once registered, businesses can create individual profiles for their
business and start posting content, such as industry trends, company news and promotional
information right away. This phenomenon has only developed within the last decade, thus social
media research has largely focused on (1) defining what it is through the explanation of new
terminology and concepts that makeup its foundations, and (2) exploring the impact of a company
s integration of social media on consumer behavior. This paper begins with an explanation of
terminology that defines social media marketing, followed by a discussion of the four main themes
found within current research studies: Virtual Brand Communities, Consumers Attitudes and
Motives, User Generated Content, and Viral Advertising.
Although social media marketing is a well researched topic, it has only been studied through
experimental and theoretical research; studies never precisely describe the benefits retailers gain
from this marketing tactic. In reviewing the rich plethora of multi disciplinary literature, it is has
become clear that studies are focusing on describing what social media marketing is as well as
examining what factors affect consumer behavior relative to social networking. Despite the initial
progress made by researchers, development in this area of

is undeniably true within Maxine Hong Kingston s memoir The Woman Warrior, a nonlinear

strives to reconcile self and society so that they can construct a coherent self and achieve wholeness,
in The Woman Warriorhowever, Kingston cannot reconcile. The fact is, Kingston has internalized

Spotting A Liar Rhetorical Analysis
From viewing Pamela Meyers s video about how to spot liars, I have learned several tips that
would help me identify whether a person is lying or not lying. The two main ideas to spotting a
liar is by body language and by speech. These two points are essential in the way a person
expresses themselves, and how they speak for themselves. According to Pamela Meyers, everyone
has lied once before whether they were aware or unaware of it. I agree that every person has lied
once in their life, but I think it depends on the situation that they were put in, which may have been
the cause that made them commit a lie. This video relates to Business Communications since people
are supposed to use a clear sense of expression when communicating with other people through a
professional business situation.
In my opinion, people are easier to be profiled by their usage of vocals depending on their pitch,
grammar, speed, and clarity. Although body language provides visual aid, and a faster depiction
of identifying a person who may or may not be lying, it does not help all the time since body
language can be adjusted or it could be mistaken for a different meaning. In example of this, when I
lie, the only thing that is super obvious and a total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Effects Of Social Media In The Workplace
Social media has increasingly been on the rise for over the past 10 years, so has the concern on
the effect of it being in the workplace. People are spending more and more time on social media
and other communication technology (Walder). Because of this, researchers have begun to wonder
what the effect will be in the workplace. The argument of social media in the workplace is on the
rise, and will continue to grow as the Internet continues to transform the way people are spending
their time (Carlson).
In the past few years, social media has become a powerful influence as a new marketing tool. It is
still relatively new, but it continues to be a part of marketing strategy for various industries.
According to the article Integrating Social Media into the Workplace: A Study of Shifting

Adlerian Art Therapy Dissertation
Many people have heard the expression that art is a projection of the soul. Art gives us the way
to not only express ourselves, but as well as tell a story that our conscious mind cannot. From
some, they believe art is simply a hobby, or perhaps something that only hangs in museums;
however, many others, and I as well, believe that art has the powers to be something more than
what the subject has previously been defined as. While art is quite has been stereotyped in such
way as decorations or [art] hang[ing] in a museum, there are purposes for art, ones that are
connected to self understanding (Malchiodi 2). I believe that art has the capability of healing
past traumas, and creating a bridge to help some people move on with their lives. Art is an
astounding idea of creation through the hands of humans. I believe that each piece of art contains
a part of every person s life. With that idea stated, questions may arise as to what the idea of the
human soul and art pertain to. Art can be a form of treatment that can help delve into the minds and
bring forth ideas and images that may have been otherwise trapped in the person s mindwho may
have trouble verbalizing this memory. In many cases, people don t quite understand what art therapy
quite is. In Cathy Malchiodi s book, The Art Therapy Sourcebook, she, rather humorously,

Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Mental Health Services
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is one of the most common clinical disorders in children
and adolescents (Nock, Kazdin, Hirpi Kessler, 2007). Greene et al. (2002) defines ODD as a
recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient,
and hostile behavior toward authority figures . ODD primarily consists of stubborn (e.g.,
tantrums) and aggressive behaviors that the child attempts to rationalize based on the
circumstances rather than view as consequential and problematic (Kazdin, 2010). Therefore,
ODD can have serious implications for the child s functioning at home, in school, and in the
community, so parents of children with ODD are more likely to utilize child mental health
services (Kazdin, 2010). The history, symptoms, diagnosis, prevalence, age of onset, duration,
risk factors, comorbidity, and treatments of ODD will be discussed, as well as the rationale
behind the revisions from the fourth (DSM IV) to fifth editions (DSM 5) of the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The ODD diagnosis was introduced by the Group for the
Advancement of Psychiatry in 1966 and appeared for the first time as a distinct child/adolescent
onset disorder in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM III) in 1980 (Nock et al., 2007). In the 35 years since its induction however, not much more
has been learned about the disorder because the majority of studies combine both ODD and

Unjust and Corrupt Practices in South African Government
Unjust and Corrupt practices in South African Government Africa is a continent rich human and
natural resources, yet a majority of its people is impoverished (Carr). South Africa, later called the
Republic of South Africa, is a country where the people repeatedly experienced injustice and
corruption from their government, the apartheid and the African National Congress. The South
African people suffered from injustice and corruption in both white and black governments. The
apartheid system consists of all white government officials, while the African National Congress
consists of people of color. The leaders of apartheid and the ANC both participated in corrupt and

The transition between the white autocratic repressive state to an inclusive and democratic black
state was a major turning point in South African history, but the country still faces injustice and
corruption within its government. The one that tackled and failed these challenges was the
newly elected African National Congress. The African National Congress (ANC) was created
by the combined efforts of Thomas Maphikela and Nelson Mendela (Perry). The redistribution
programs that the ANC passed with the good intention of returning money to the people have
been exploited by corrupted officials for personal gain. Little to none of the money that was
supposedly for the citizens were pocketed by corrupted officials. A similar policy that was
passed to assist the impoverished was the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). The goal BEE
was to build a free and fair democracy (Emkes). The BEE was a way to address the inequalities
that were committed in the apartheid system. It gave people economic opportunities that were not
available to them during the apartheid. The BEE was a failure and caused the income inequality to
widen, which resulted in the enrichment of a small group of black shareholders. These shareholders
acquired equity that is worth billions of Rand in South Africa s largest companies for their own
personal interests, while millions lived in poverty (Emkes). The rest of the population, mainly

Is Google Making Us Stupid
There has been debate on how the growth of technological inventions is influencing the way
humans think. For teenagers and young adults in my generation, it s rather easy to adapt to new
advancements since we grew up being introduced to so many inventions that took over the entire
world s interest in the past decade. I personally prefer to multitask than to focus on one task at
hand and I can record more information in a less amount of time when I type on a keyboard.
Therefore, I have an easier time learning and getting things done with techy tools than when I sit
upright with just a pen and paper. But most skeptics that assume technologyis a disease would argue
that technology s versatility and convenience could be a distracting to our thoughtprocess. In the
article, Is Google Making Us Stupid, author Nicholas Carr believes that the progress in
technological innovation has had a derailing effect on our cognition; however, in the article,
Smarter Than You Think, Clive Thompson addresses how collaborating with today s technological
advances can actually give more opportunities to bring about more intelligence. Although Carr
addresses how technology can be a major challenge to our critical thinking skills, Thompson
arguably provides better evidence to show how technology actually challenges our skills to for the
better by teaching us how to be more aware, giving us the opportunity to access the most amount of
information, and creating a higher field of expertise for the

Helping Phantom Limb Pain Essay
Helping Phantom Limb Pain
Over the years scientists have noted many complaints of a strange form of pain called phantom
limb pain. This pain is strange because it is located in an appendage that no longer exists. By many
of the amputees the pain is described as totally unbearable. Phantom limb pain has even driven
some victims crazy. For the amputee population this is a very real problem that definitely needs to
be solved.
After James Peacock had his right arm amputated last December, he expected some difficulties.
With those difficulties came pain so unbearable it could not be controlled with all the medicine in
his cabinet. Derek Steen, otherwise known as The one armed pool player, lost a limb in a
motorcycle accident at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When a body part is lost the corresponding part of the brain is not able to handle the loss and
rewires its circuitry to make up for the signals it was no longer receiving from the missing digit.
The rewiring might occur in one of two ways. Perhaps nerve impulses in the sensory cortex begin to
course down previously untraveled pathways. The second theory is that neighboring neurons in the
cortex may actually invade the territory left fallow because sensations are no longer received from
the missing limb.
Birbaumer, Lutzenberger, Montoya, and Wolfgang (1997) examined the functional relationship
between cortical reorganization and phantom limb pain. Neuroelectric source imaging was used to
determine changes in cortical reorganization in the somatosensory cortex after anesthesia of an
amputation stump produced by brachial plexus blockage in six phantom limb pain patients and four
pain free amputees. This cortical reorganization was studied to examine whether the neurons
rewired after the loss of an appendage. Three of the phantom limb subjects experienced a virtual
elimination of current phantom pain. The Biraumber et al., (1997) result of the anesthesia was a
very rapid elimination of cortical reorganization in the somatosensory cortex. In three phantom limb
pain amputees pain was not reduced by brachial

they emerged into the work in 1964. Initially the band achieved little critical recognition with the

Today The Velvet Underground are widely recognized as one of the most influential bands of our

The 400 Blows Analysis
The 400 Blows is a French New Wave film made in 1959, directed by François Truffaut as his
debut feature film. The film focuses on the trials and tribulations of a young adolescent named
Antoine Doinel played by Jean Pierre LГ©aud, who is growing up in Paris during the early 1950s.
While trying to find freedom from the craziness of life, Antoine is faced with overcoming
loneliness and the harsh consequences on his unexplained actions. Inspired by Truffaut s personal

We see from clever fades Jump cuts, match cuts and various long takes. Truffaut does this in an
effort to move forward his vision of the auteur theory. The opening sequence uses a series of
high angle shots to assist in establishing a feeling of childhood innocence and indeed, the child in
this film, Antoine Dionel (Jeanne Pierre Leaud), starts out innocent. The camera focuses of the
city buildings and the sky above. As shown from a ground point of view, the buildings are larger
than life and intimidating. This is how most children view the world, as being large and
intimidating. Take, for example, the scenario of dropping a child off for his/her first day of
school. Most of them are devastated because they have to deal with a world that is larger than the
one they know, and that is intimidating. The sky is vast and innocent, symbolizing a child s mind.
Children have incredible imaginations and are also innocent by nature. There is a definite
correlation here between the angle selected and the sense of childhood innocence. However, this

of intimacy and emotional expression. I have grown up in a very loving, nurturing and affectionate
environment where hearing the words I love you, are the norm. In my familywe hug and kiss each
other on the cheeks both when greeting and/or saying good bye to each other. My Nonna is also

Neuhaus (2017) states, our stories/narrative helps us to organize our experiences so they make
sense. For this paper the self narrative is used to explain our story of how we interact with our
romantic or close interpersonal relationships. The ability to do this is not something I have
always had but rather something I have learned over time with the help of therapist and
determination to learn to become a better communicator and more differentiated self. Being a
middle child I found myself in the role of the pleaser, the child who was easy going, did not
cause any conflict, was quiet and shy and did not demand much attention from parents but
would receive some attention by doing something that pleased my parents. This role continued
through high school and into my marriage where I thought it was my fault if my husband was
upset or mad about something. I also married young having never gotten the chance to go on to
college nor learn to differentiate as an adult. I went from one close knit family into another
without learning to be on my own or to rely on myself. This caused a little bit of emotional
fusion in my relationship with my husband because I needed him to replace the role that my
parents filled in our relationship. After counseling I learned that I did not need to take on my
husband s negative attitudes as my own and it was okay for me to be happy when he was upset
or angry. A technique taught to me by one of the counselors included hula hoops. I and the
counselor would stand inside our own hula hoop to better illustrate that the space we inhabited as
a metaphor for our personal space, life and emotions. When my counselor invaded my personal
space with his hula hoop I learned that this was my personal space therefore I had control and the
power to dictate whether or not another person was allowed to do so. With that in mind it was also

The Anatomy Of Melancholy By Robert Burton
Introduction
When an individual feels sad, hopeless, discouraged, troubled, or withdrawn from their usual
interests and daily living for a short period of time, it is depression. On the other hand, when these
feelings heavily impact daily activities and bring severe and long lasting psychological pain, this is
major depressive disorder (MDD). In addition to major depressive disorder identified as MDD, it
may be referred to as unipolar depression, major depression, or clinical depression.
According to Nemade, Reiss, and Dombeck (2013) the history of depression dates back as early as
the second millennium B.C.; initially depression was referred as melancholia. It was thought all
mental illnesses were caused by possessions of the devil. In addition, depression was understood as
a spiritual (or mental) illness rather than a physical one (Nemade et al., 2013).
Depression was described by a Robert Burton by social and psychological causes, in his
published work titled the Anatomy of Melancholy. Dated in the early 1600s, Burton s work
provided recommendations and treatments for depression. Research by Gruenberg, Goldstein, and
Pincus (2005) show major depressive disorder was termed in the mid 1970s for the Feigner Criteria
which lead to the DSM III (p. 3).
Furthermore, major depressive disorder became defined by specific diagnostic criteria and change
in terminology providing distinction from bipolar disorder (Gruenberg et al., 2005, p. 3). In 1980,
MDD was found in the DSM

The Cloning Debate
According to Mosby s Medical Dictionary, the term cloning is defined as a procedure for
producing multiple copies of genetically identical organisms or cells or of individual genes.
Researchers have conducted several cloning experiments over the years, replicating tissues,
organs, and even full organisms such as Dolly the Sheep in 1997. The history of cloning dates
back to the early 1900 s when Hans Adolf Edward Dreisch studied the results of separating two
celled sea urchin embryos ( The History of Cloning ). The process has since evolved and become a
process that is widely talked about amongst doctors, scientists and the general public. The process
of cloning has been predicted to play a significant role in medical advancements in the near future.
The main areas of which cloning could potentially affect are treatments for various diseases through
organ replacement and infertility. As many topics in science, controversy exists regarding the
subject of cloning in addition to its advantages and disadvantages.
One advantage of cloning is the ability to produce organs and tissues for diseases and medical
conditions that require transplantation. The national waitlist for organ donation consists of more
than one hundred thousand patients and increases by nearly four thousand patients a day ( Organ
Donation and Transplantation ). The amount of donors is much less in comparison to the number
of recipients. As of 2013,

The Rhetorical Analysis Of We Shall Overcome The speech We Shall Overcome delivered by
Lyndon Baines Johnson on 15 March 1965, Washington, D.C. The theme of the speech is to call

the situation that many states had been used to deny Negroes the right to vote. The purpose of
which is to persuade Members of Congress to pass the bill which came up by himself. At that

Human being are not cold blooded animal and nobody is definitely indifferent. Therefore,
authors always write down words to arouse readers enthusiasm or fervor gradually. Pathos work
as the same way, which let readers get moved by emotion weapon. We can find many pathos
devices in this well known speech. The real hero of this struggle is the American Negro. His
actions and protests, his courage to risk safety and even to risk his life, have awakened the
conscience of this nation. His demonstrations have been designed to call attention to injustice,
designed to provoke change, designed to stir reform. He has called upon us to make good the
promise of America. And who among us can say that we would have made the same progress
were it not for his persistent bravery, and his faith in American democracy. From these great
words, Johnson described the American Negro as a hero, who had awakened the conscience of
this nation. There is no doubt that many people were neutral in this case. However, after that
speech, after being persuaded by their president, they might turn to agree with their president.
Some of them might give up their prejudices to Negroes. They would recall many Negroes who
were used to live with them were also kind and gave their hands sometimes. Pathos work in that
way. Authors utilize pathos to tough readers and audiences, like what I have mentioned, everyone
has the milk of human kindness. Take text for example again, This great, rich, restless country can
offer opportunity and education and hope to all, all black and white, all North and South,
sharecropper and city dweller. These are the enemies: poverty, ignorance, disease. These impressed
words reminded all the people of that USA belonged to everyone. They should be unity to stop
poverty, ignorance, disease not discriminate not our fellow man, not our neighbor. This pathos

Chimera Cather s The Lightning Thief
Books are often the inspiration to well known movies. However, people who love to dwell in a
book find themselves frustrated while watching the movie verse. When people read the book,
they create their own little movie in their minds. People use their imagination to make sense of
many parts of the book. When they watch the movie they are often disappointed since it doesn t
match their expectations. Books can easily project ideas to the reader that movies cannot. It is
difficult for a movie to follow a book precisely because it would be too much to sit through and
watch. Therefore many scenes are cut off. Scenes that is easy to imagine but hard showing.

Percy frees his friends, and chops Procrustes head off. Another challenge was in chapter 18,
where they meet Cerberus, the three headed guard dog of the Underworld. The three friends

pass the dog, Annabeth started playing fetch with Cerberus knowing that would distract it while
they enter to see Hades. It quotes in page 314, Annabeth gets the idea to play fetch with Cerberus

guards the entrance to Hades, watching dead people walk around him all day. Annabeth plays

These were the extra obstacles the three had to face. Scenes like these are easy to imagine in the
mind, however, they would be hard to show in screen. If the director were to involve such scenes
in the movie, it would mean more running time, more actors, more locations, and it would cost
more money. In order to not take the burden it was decided to not include such scenes. The
downside of that idea is that, these specific scenes would have made the movie much more
interesting. Sure it would be a lot to sit through but viewers would enjoy watching the action. There

Gender Beliefs Of Gender Bias In The Workplace
Gender Bias in the Workplace
Brittney A. Bray
College of Central Florida
Stereotypes
Women have long fought for the right to be viewed as equal within the work place. Over the past
decades the percentage of women in management has risen from a mere 13.8% in 1950 to 50.6%
in 2007 (Latu, 2000). However, gender stereotype bias and discrimination are still present in the
modern workforce. Gender stereotypes are beliefs of how men and women should be and act.
When evaluators don t have clear criteria, ambiguity causes gender stereotypes to fill the voids.
Leading to differences in the way men and women are evaluated. This happens, in most cases, on
an unconscious level, though it does still occur consciously. It has been shown by psychologists
that we routinely categorize individuals within milliseconds of meeting them, we classify them by
their gender. In doing this we assume they will possess certain gender role traits, either feminine or
masculine. Men are expected to have strong leadership traits, while women are known to have
nurturing, submissive qualities. The cause of gender discrimination is based on cultural beliefs and
organizational policies. Women are most vulnerable to gender discrimination and sexual harassment
when they are in a male dominated environment, they may also be perceived as a threat.
How gender stereotypes put women at a disadvantage.
When woman don t conform to their gender roles they are often criticized. For example; when

Abortion, An Act Of Killing
Abortion has been a topic of ethics for as long as time can remember. Abortion is a difficult and
controversial moral issue that most have dealt with or heard about. Most would argue that no one
has the right to demand large sacrifices from another simply to sustain their own lives, while others
see abortionas an act of killing, which is clearly wrong. Both sides have important moral insights,
even if ultimately these insights are outweighed by the insights of the other side. Each and every
person has their own viewpoint that is biased simply because of their religion or how they were
raised. Opinions are passed on generation to generation and each generation with a more developed
educated view attempts to change these views. The goal of this ethical argument is not to convince
to accept one position or the other, but to help to understand both sides.
Without knowledge of both sides, the argument continues. Beware of the labels Pro life and Pro
choice. They imply that the other side is against life or against choice. They ignore the nuances in
a person s position. There are two principal moral considerations. People consider the moral status
of the fetus and on the other hand the rights of the pregnant woman. There are distinctions to
whether it is immorally wrong or if it should be illegal. These are distinct issues. Not everything
that is immoral is necessarily illegal. We may, for example, want to say that being unfaithful in one
s marriage is immoral, but we

Transmigration Definition
Transmigration of the soul or reincarnation is a concept the Egyptians and even possibly ancient
primitives believed in. For the ancient, primitive people they believed in a religion called animism.
Ancient Egyptians embalmed the body for preservation so it could move on to the next life with the
soul or ka. Transmigration explained family resemblance; the soulfrom one dead family member
was thought of capable of entering newborn babies. Reincarnation, interchangeable with
transmigration, can be thought of as a process. After death, the soul is thought of to leave the body
and seek another life source, human or animal or another living form. The soul does this by entering
and leaving through the nostrils and mouth, not only after death and around birth, but while
sleeping too.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pythagoras believed souls were immortal and it was only our bodies that died and the soul
continued on towards many rebirths, becoming purified in the Underworld, until it could end or
leave the cycle because it become completely purified. Plato, another Greek philosopher also
believed in transmigration. He too believed the soul was eternal, only his idea was it become un
purified during inhabiting an organism (a body). Simultaneously, while habituating bodies, the
soul could eliminate impurities by doing good. If souls continue this positive lifestyle, they can
return to the preexisting state, however if souls do bad, they will end up in Tartarus, otherwise
known as the Christian concept of hell. Overall, Plato believed people should behave well in
order to break the cycle and not end up in eternal damnation. The Druids were a priestly caste of
Celts from the first century AD who also believed in Reincarnation. They believed souls were
immortal and spent a certain amount of time in different bodies. For this reason, the Celts were not

Thesis Statement For Plastic Pollution
Plastic Pollution Outline
Thesis Statement: Plastic pollution is an ongoing issue that is quickly growing as time passes by,
and if humans don t try to put an end to it, it will affect them in the long term. It is a serious issue
that needs to be addressed because it is affecting humans, animals, and the environment.
Plastic pollution affects humans even if they don t realize it.
Plastic pollution harms people s endocrine system.
Chemicals like BPA and phthalates causes development problems.
Other diseases have chemical connections to plastic.
Women are affected more by plastic pollution.
Pregnant women who were exposed to plastic chemicals gave birth to kids with genital defects.
As people reproduce, these defects become worse.

Unfortunately, most of mankind decides to run away from the problem instead of facing the
difficult truth. Because of their reckless actions, many animals are suffering when they should not
have to. As a matter of fact, plastic pollution kills millions of birds, fish, and 100,000 sea turtles
every year (D., G.). With the increasing amount of this plastic trash, the death toll of these animals
will continue to rise and will not fall until humans decide to take action. While many of these
animals are dying because they do not know any better, that still doesn t mean humans should still
turn away from the problem. Simple things like plastic rings, fishing nets, and fishing line snare
and drown thousands of seals, sea lions, and dolphins each year, and while humans don t notice, it
seriously affects these marine animals (Hayden). Even though animals don t die when they first
ingest plastic, it makes it harder for them to consume other food that they need. In actuality,
scientists found that, Once plastics have been consumed, laboratory tests show that chemical
additives and adsorbed pollutants and metals on their surface can desorb (leach out) and transfer
into the guts and tissues of marine organisms (Seltenrich). This just makes it harder for animals to
eat, especially for the animals who need to feed their babies. Some of these animals starve to death;
other ones that are nursing babies transfer

Frederick Douglas s The Declaration Of Independence
July 4th is the day celebrated when America gained declared independence from Great Britain. It
s been celebrated every year as a country since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence
since 1776. In 1852, the 5th of July, Frederick Douglas was asked to speak in front of northern
abolitionists in New York of the holiday and the subject of independence and freedom. Frederick
Douglas would be the ideal person to speak about freedom. At the time in 1850 s he was an African
Americanman who had gained his freedom from slavery. He had taught himself how to read and
write, which was uncommon for an Africa American to do, during slave hood. Most slaveholders
at this time would want to keep their slaves illiterate. This was an era where Northern states were
just beginning to nurture the idea of abolition. Being an abolitionist was still dangerous and
censored in the south, and most northerners were just anti slavery, the difference between the two
was one wanted the end of slavery total (abolitionists) and the other just wanted to stop the spread
of slavery in new states and territories (anti slavery). Frederick Douglas, because of his first hand
experience with slavery and his literacy, began to make friends among the abolitionists in the North
and would be the best person to speak about freedom. He then uses this as a chance to persuade,
particularly northern, people into becoming abolitionist by pointing out the irony in him speaking
about the holiday of independence, and

The War Between The Civilized And Barbaric World
President Bush described his holy war against the so called terrorism as a war between the
civilized and barbaric world. But his government committed more barbaric acts than the terrorists
themselves. I can name tons of war crimes that Bush s government is involved in. (Mohamedou
Ould Slahi, pg 46) Mohamedou Ould Slahi said this when he was in the Guantanamo Bay Camps.
His tragic experience was later written and published as the novel known as GuantГЎnamo Diary.
The issue of Guantanamo Bay is a complex one. What it is about is the United States violated the
human rights of the people taken into the camps. They took them in, held them prisoners, and

Stereotypes Of The American Dream
We often refer to the U.S as a country of immigrants. Because there are so many different people
from all over the world, it is hard to identify what the typical American is like. When you think of
the USA, some stereotypes will probably come to mind they love hamburgers, listen to country
music, each own their own guns and are probably fat. However, does this stereotype fit everybody?
It is often said that America is a country built on freedom, which is quite ironic considering the way
the Europeans stole the land from the Native Americans and the country is built upon the backs of
black slaves. What many Americans have in common is that they believe in the American Dream.

They tend to vote for the Republican Party and identify themselves as Christian. To mention
another region, El Norte has been influenced by the Hispanics and has taken some important
Latino values; family loyalty and group solidarity. In New Netherland, the early belief in freedom
of religion, speech and trade became a trademark and it still is today. The Native Americans are
the indigenous people of America. They were the first people of America and are worth mentioning
when discussing who the Americans are today. Native Americans have their own traditions and
beliefs. Unfortunately, the white settlers have mistreated them and because of that, many have lost
a part of their culture and those who do not live in reservations have had to adjust to the more
common culture. In conclusion, it is hard to define the typical American. What most have in
common are the core values freedom. The Americans are often very patriotic and are big believers
in the constitution as well as their government. Most of them believe in the American Dream
although many young people doubt it. Like minded people often end up living in the same places
and that is why it is easier to identify each region s values that the whole country s

War Measures Act Essay
Throughout history, the actions of governments have always been debated; however, occasionally
there are certain events which spark much controversy, both at the time of the event and by
historians today. One of these controversial acts was the invocation of the War Measures Act in
1970, an act which suspended the civil liberties of Canadian citizens. In October 1970, in what
became known as the October Crisis, the Front de libГ©ration du QuГ©bec, (commonly known as
the FLQ) which was a French Canadian organization advocating independence from Canada,
kidnapped two politicians. This initiated a series of events, one of which was the invocation of the
War Measures Act by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Many historians argue that... Show

However, both Prime Minister Trudeau and Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa were not willing to
give into the FLQ demands, External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp even claimed the demands
to be wholly unreasonable, despite the fact the life of a prominent politician was at stake. On
October 10th 1970, Bourassa finally comes back to Quebec from his a trip in New York, which
he deemed as more significant than the crisis in Quebec. Later that evening, two FLQ members
kidnapped Pierre Laporte, the Quebec Minister of Labour. Five days later after still refusing to
meet the FLQ demands, Trudeau calls upon the War Measures Act. Under the regulations of the
Act, which dated back to World War One, Trudeau s government suspended the civil liberties of
Canadian citizens, and were able to arrest and detain anyone suspected of belonging to the FLQ,
or even supporting the FLQ. The body of Pierre Laporte was discovered in the trunk of a car
three days later, in what was believed to have been retaliation for the War Measures Act, as the
murder itself occurred one to two days after the Act was invoked. On December 3rd, 2007 the
FLQ kidnappers released James Cross in exchange for safe conduct to Cuba. Over the next several
months many of the kidnappers were

The Impact Of Catcalling
Imagine walking down the street during summer in a summer dress and passing by a man you
do not know suddenly uttered Hey beautiful! What would you feel about it? What would you
do? Catcalling is a serious social issue encountered today especially by women. It is a harsh or
shrill call or whistle expressing derision or disapproval according to the dictionary. Today, it may
sound more like a compliment rather than disapproval. But, catcalls are not compliments at all
because they are usually done by strangers in an aggressively sexual manner. They are creepy and
can cause fear because they tend to grab an unsuspecting womans attention for fun and
entertainment. Although it may depend on one s delivery and intention due to the difference
between a polite greeting and a catcall (Aquino, 2014). Catcalls are usually ignored by women
today to prevent the cause of tension between them and catcallers. However, awarenessabout its
damaging effects is being raised because of the portrayal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others could hardly believe that it was an issue, but actually it is. Posters and websites are being
made to help raise awareness and to empower women s rights. Earlier petitions that were made were
ignored due to the history that women were inferior to men. But today, the continuing empowerment
of women has created great opportunities for them to reopen the petition. Women s actions towards
this might be ignoring something about what they have heard, talking back, and maybe telling the
authorities about their encounters. Most women feel being disrespected by the opposite sex,
anxious and angry that triggers them sometimes to have low self esteem. The main point of this
street harassment is that not all women feels happy about this but rather they feel quite the
opposite. This might be a compliment to others but this is not the right way to catch women s

His Coy Mistress Tone
Everyone need to save their time and enjoy their life when they are young. Both To His Coy
Mistress by Andrew Marvell and To the Virgins, To Make much of time by Robert Herrick both
examines the idea of carpe diem. However, the way that the two speakers elaborate their point is
slightly different. The speaker in the poem To His coy Mistress use more passive tone to let people
have more thinkings of life.
To His Coy Mistress by Marvell states the idea that if people want to fall in love with others, do
not be shy or they will regretted in the future. Reading between the lines, the speaker first expressed
how much he love his girlfriend. Time s wingГЁd chariot hurrying near (Marvell 22) then the

His coy Mistress use lots of exaggerations and metaphors to examines his idea. In the first stanza,
he uses the Indian Gange s side , a hundred years , Vaster than empires (Marvell 5 7), and other
words that form a parallelism with exaggeration to explain how much he adores his girlfriend.
The speaker use those huge words in the parallelism and contradiction to create how good the
time while he was falling in love. Furthermore, the metaphors also contributes to the tone of the
poem. In the second stanza, Time s wingГЁd chariot hurrying near (Marvell 22) which make the

feeling of the time passing. Nevertheless, the speaker make his love as the vegetable My

contradiction, use two opposite things emphasize that the time can not be back and people don t

Semantic Web And The Web
another day, right now we are sticking to the Semantic Web. We should first wait until the Semantic
Web is completed before we jump to the next thing on the list. (Aghaei, Nematbakhsh and Farsani)
(Frauenfelder)
The million dollar question is: what is the Semantic Web? The Semantic Web is not a completely
new web that is going to replace the current web, it is simply and extension from the present web.
The idea of Web 3.0 is for the information in the web to be understood and recognized by the
computer. Today the web is a big global storage that stores files for humans to read, not computers,
humans. This in what the Semantic Webis going to change by allowing computers to read and
understand the information and data stored in the web. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A better way to help understand the Semantic Web would be a scenario placed by the Tim Berners
Lee. First, imagine that you are registering for an online conference. The website of the
conference contains not only the event date, time and location, but also information from the
closest hotel and airport. In real and regular life a you would have to make sure you have a time
in your schedule that is compatible with the online conference for you to be able to attend. Next
you would have to make arrangements for the flight by buying a ticket and for the hotel by
reserving a room that meets your needs. According to Berners Lee right now there is no way
you can simply say I want to go to the event because you have to make plans by making
arrangements. However, with the semantic web this scenario of simply wanting to go without
making previous arrangements is possible because with the Semantic Web the airport and hotel
arrangements can be done by simply pressing a button. The SM would book your flight and it
will reserve your room as well, without you having the need to pick up the phone to call a
reservation desk, or you having to visit the hotel s or airport s website. As you can see Web 3.0 can
facilitate our tasks tremendously.(Frauenfelder) (Dumbill) (Hendler, Berners Lee and Miller)
After reading about what the Semantic Web is it might seem like there is

Inattentional Blindness In Human Blindness
Inattentional Blindness in our Everyday Lives and Reducing Lapses in Attention
Introduction
Our world is an immensely vast place. It is a place in which great clockworks of life govern
everything from the largest interdependent network to the smallest details. As humans, we have
evolved to perceive the world primarily through visual stimuli. In terms of intricacy and the area of
the brain dedicated, our visual sense is the most well developed sensory system. Our eyes are
adapted so that they focus on objects both near and far through the contraction and relaxation of the
ciliary muscle (Kaufman, Levin, Alm). However, we cannot focus on everything at the same time.
This process of focus is selective as we can pay attention to and process only so much information
at once (Chen, Choi). As a result, humans are able to process some visual stimuli but may
completely fail to regard other details, be they minute or monumental. This failure is described as
inattentional blindness , and it can have several real world implications in our everyday lives.
Experiments
Take the following experiment into consideration. You are tasked to watch a video of a group of
people pass basketballs back and forth. Three of them are dressed in white shirts and the other
three in black shirts. You are to concentrate on the basketballs and count how many times the balls
were passed by the people in white shirts. However, here comes the twist. While you re busy
counting the basketballs flying

Race And Ethnicity From An Anglo American War Of 1846 And...
In the span of 50 years a lot can change especially when a power struggle began brewing between

ethnicity from an Anglo perspective in newly opened for trade to foreigners California. From the
PBS website, one is able to learn about the Mexican American War of 1846 and the effects it had
on the history of the United Statesand Mexico. Looking deeper into this topic one is able to
discover Michael C. White s testimony as a Mexican citizen of Anglo descent fighting for the
United States. An important document that changed the course of history was the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo. This document was an agreement between Mexico and the United States
and whose certain provisions were then violated by the latter country. According to the Pio Pico
official website, he was a victim of such practices as he went from being a prominent figure in
society to dying a poor man. A few years after these events, according to the article Crime and
Punishment: Los Angeles County, 1850 1856, crimes emerged against the now minorities. The
19th century proved to be a timeframe of big change for Los Angeles. It saw the rise and fall of
Mexican power and the social, political and economic changes that came with these events. Race

Comparing The Painting Dante And The Three Kingdoms
The painting Dante and the Three Kingdoms by Domenico di Michelino corresponds to the three
world of the Christian afterlife in Dante s Divine Comedy . Dante stands in red robed colossus in
front of the city of Florence. Behind him, the art shows the three worlds of Christian afterlife,
which are the heavenly paradise, hell, and Mount Purgatory, thereby revealing the celestial
spheres. The painting dates back to around 1465. On the left side, it shows the sinners getting
down to hell and souls appear being burnt by the hellfire. Dante says does as they walked inside
hell, he noticed famous people, who were great but still went to hell.

which according to the artist, represents the heavenly paradise. I also, shows Adam and Eve in the
Garden of Eden, representing the earthly paradise. The seventh terrace is immediately at the top; it
faces flames and strong winds from below. The level represents the lustfulness. Some of the
sinners appear to move in the fire with the guilt of going against the marriage virtues, while others
are motionless, depicting the lust. The sixth terrace represents the gluttony the sin of overeating.
There is an apple tree in the center of the terrace and a steam that flows on top of the tree from the
mountain. The sinners appear starved due to the aroma of the apple, and they cannot help the scent
of the ripe apples and the wate. They have to feed on them only to make them hungrier.
The fifth terrace show people lying on the ground with their faces looking down. It shows that they

  • 2. The Bobo Doll Experiment The study done by Ross Bandura was the Bobo Doll Experiment. This study was done in 1961. He had a total of 72 participants 36 girls and 36 boys around the ages of 3 and 6 years old. Bandura was trying to add credence to his belief that all humans behavior was learned, through social imitation and copying, rather than inherited through genetic factors (Shuttleworth). Bandra designed an experiment that would allow some to watch aggressive actors and others to watch non aggressive actors. Bandra decided to use children for the experiment because children tend to have less social conditioning and the also have less instruction and teaching of rules of society than adults subjects (Shuttleworth). • 3. Essay on Violent Video Games Raise Aggression Throughout history man kind has always searched for ways to entertain himself, each time developing new activities and games. Video games have become a very popular way to spend time and have fun from the 1970 s up to now. With new developments appeared different video game genres from adventure to racing, but the violent video games appear to be the most popular ones (Shin, 2003), for example: shooters, fighting and video games where you have to eliminate, destroy, or kill your enemies. Video games have become very influential on children and adults (Stafford, 1999). The processor of the consoles has also been a key factor to the development of more real looking violent video games. From Intel s 4004 microprocessor up to Intel s core 2 duo E8500 processor we have seen how computers are able to do more tasks in less time. This development has given a way for violent video games to be more free in the sense that more actions can be made, the virtual worlds are bigger and there are more objectives to be done or enemies to be eliminated. C.The impact of the issue Violence in video games has been proved to raise the aggression on video gamers in the short and long term, whether it s in their language, attitude or actions. Also video games not only cause this but they also decrease prosocial behavior and empathy (Anderson, 2010). Great presidents inherently possess a visionary leadership role; that is they know the direction in which they want to steer the country to, where it came from, and where it currently is. • 12. Relationship between Art and Technology in 1960s Spurred on by exhibitions, industry sponsorship and education programmes, the artists of the 1960s began to grapple with the space age. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and Constructivist precedent. Technologydid not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg s Soundings (1968) will be used to explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which artist and scientist collaborated. The technological works of Tinguely can be classified as kinetic due to their incorporation of mechanical movement. For Pontus HultГ©n the inclusion of movement implied a complete rejection of the holy values of art , the traditional characteristics of sculpture were abandoned and kineticism projected sculpture onto a different course. The two main ideas to spotting a liar is by body language and by speech. These two points are essential in the way a person expresses themselves, and how they speak for themselves. According to Pamela Meyers, everyone has lied once before whether they were aware or unaware of it. I agree that every person has lied once in their life, but I think it depends on the situation that they were put in, which may have been the cause that made them commit a lie. This video relates to Business Communications since people are supposed to use a clear sense of expression when communicating with other people through a professional business situation. In my opinion, people are easier to be profiled by their usage of vocals depending on their pitch, grammar, speed, and clarity. Although body language provides visual aid, and a faster depiction of identifying a person who may or may not be lying, it does not help all the time since body language can be adjusted or it could be mistaken for a different meaning. Art gives us the way to not only express ourselves, but as well as tell a story that our conscious mind cannot. From some, they believe art is simply a hobby, or perhaps something that only hangs in museums; however, many others, and I as well, believe that art has the powers to be something more than what the subject has previously been defined as. While art is quite has been stereotyped in such way as decorations or [art] hang[ing] in a museum, there are purposes for art, ones that are connected to self understanding (Malchiodi 2). I believe that art has the capability of healing past traumas, and creating a bridge to help some people move on with their lives. Art is an astounding idea of creation through the hands of humans. I believe that each piece of art contains a part of every person s life. With that idea stated, questions may arise as to what the idea of the human soul and art pertain to. Art can be a form of treatment that can help delve into the minds and bring forth ideas and images that may have been otherwise trapped in the person s mindwho may have trouble verbalizing this memory. In many cases, people don t quite understand what art therapy quite is. In Cathy Malchiodi s book, The Art Therapy Sourcebook, she, rather humorously, explains how many people have asked her what art therapy actually is. Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Mental Health Services Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is one of the most common clinical disorders in children and adolescents (Nock, Kazdin, Hirpi Kessler, 2007). Greene et al. (2002) defines ODD as a recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures . ODD primarily consists of stubborn (e.g., tantrums) and aggressive behaviors that the child attempts to rationalize based on the circumstances rather than view as consequential and problematic (Kazdin, 2010). Therefore, ODD can have serious implications for the child s functioning at home, in school, and in the community, so parents of children with ODD are more likely to utilize child mental health services (Kazdin, 2010). The history, symptoms, diagnosis, prevalence, age of onset, duration, risk factors, comorbidity, and treatments of ODD will be discussed, as well as the rationale behind the revisions from the fourth (DSM IV) to fifth editions (DSM 5) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The ODD diagnosis was introduced by the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry in 1966 and appeared for the first time as a distinct child/adolescent onset disorder in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III) in 1980 (Nock et al., 2007). The transition between the white autocratic repressive state to an inclusive and democratic black state was a major turning point in South African history, but the country still faces injustice and corruption within its government. The African National Congress (ANC) was created by the combined efforts of Thomas Maphikela and Nelson Mendela (Perry). The redistribution programs that the ANC passed with the good intention of returning money to the people have been exploited by corrupted officials for personal gain. When a body part is lost the corresponding part of the brain is not able to handle the loss and rewires its circuitry to make up for the signals it was no longer receiving from the missing digit. The rewiring might occur in one of two ways. Perhaps nerve impulses in the sensory cortex begin to course down previously untraveled pathways. The second theory is that neighboring neurons in the cortex may actually invade the territory left fallow because sensations are no longer received from the missing limb. Birbaumer, Lutzenberger, Montoya, and Wolfgang (1997) examined the functional relationship between cortical reorganization and phantom limb pain. Neuroelectric source imaging was used to determine changes in cortical reorganization in the somatosensory cortex after anesthesia of an amputation stump produced by brachial plexus blockage in six phantom limb pain patients and four pain free amputees. This cortical reorganization was studied to examine whether the neurons rewired after the loss of an appendage. Three of the phantom limb subjects experienced a virtual elimination of current phantom pain. Being a middle child I found myself in the role of the pleaser, the child who was easy going, did not cause any conflict, was quiet and shy and did not demand much attention from parents but would receive some attention by doing something that pleased my parents. • 31. The Anatomy Of Melancholy By Robert Burton Introduction When an individual feels sad, hopeless, discouraged, troubled, or withdrawn from their usual interests and daily living for a short period of time, it is depression. On the other hand, when these feelings heavily impact daily activities and bring severe and long lasting psychological pain, this is major depressive disorder (MDD). In addition to major depressive disorder identified as MDD, it may be referred to as unipolar depression, major depression, or clinical depression. According to Nemade, Reiss, and Dombeck (2013) the history of depression dates back as early as the second millennium B.C.; initially depression was referred as melancholia. It was thought all mental illnesses were caused by possessions of the devil. In addition, depression was understood as a spiritual (or mental) illness rather than a physical one (Nemade et al., 2013). Depression was described by a Robert Burton by social and psychological causes, in his published work titled the Anatomy of Melancholy. Dated in the early 1600s, Burton s work provided recommendations and treatments for depression. Research by Gruenberg, Goldstein, and Pincus (2005) show major depressive disorder was termed in the mid 1970s for the Feigner Criteria which lead to the DSM III (p. 3). Furthermore, major depressive disorder became defined by specific diagnostic criteria and change in terminology providing distinction from bipolar disorder (Gruenberg et al., 2005, p. 3). Researchers have conducted several cloning experiments over the years, replicating tissues, organs, and even full organisms such as Dolly the Sheep in 1997. The history of cloning dates back to the early 1900 s when Hans Adolf Edward Dreisch studied the results of separating two celled sea urchin embryos ( The History of Cloning ). The process has since evolved and become a process that is widely talked about amongst doctors, scientists and the general public. The process of cloning has been predicted to play a significant role in medical advancements in the near future. The main areas of which cloning could potentially affect are treatments for various diseases through organ replacement and infertility. As many topics in science, controversy exists regarding the subject of cloning in addition to its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of cloning is the ability to produce organs and tissues for diseases and medical conditions that require transplantation. His actions and protests, his courage to risk safety and even to risk his life, have awakened the conscience of this nation. His demonstrations have been designed to call attention to injustice, designed to provoke change, designed to stir reform. He has called upon us to make good the promise of America. And who among us can say that we would have made the same progress were it not for his persistent bravery, and his faith in American democracy. From these great words, Johnson described the American Negro as a hero, who had awakened the conscience of this nation. There is no doubt that many people were neutral in this case. Over the past decades the percentage of women in management has risen from a mere 13.8% in 1950 to 50.6% in 2007 (Latu, 2000). However, gender stereotype bias and discrimination are still present in the modern workforce. Gender stereotypes are beliefs of how men and women should be and act. Abortion is a difficult and controversial moral issue that most have dealt with or heard about. Most would argue that no one has the right to demand large sacrifices from another simply to sustain their own lives, while others see abortionas an act of killing, which is clearly wrong. Both sides have important moral insights, even if ultimately these insights are outweighed by the insights of the other side. Each and every person has their own viewpoint that is biased simply because of their religion or how they were raised. Opinions are passed on generation to generation and each generation with a more developed educated view attempts to change these views. The goal of this ethical argument is not to convince to accept one position or the other, but to help to understand both sides. Without knowledge of both sides, the argument continues. Beware of the labels Pro life and Pro choice. They imply that the other side is against life or against choice. They ignore the nuances in a person s position. There are two principal moral considerations. People consider the moral status of the fetus and on the other hand the rights of the pregnant woman. There are distinctions to whether it is immorally wrong or if it should be illegal. These are distinct issues. Not everything that is immoral is necessarily illegal. • 40. Transmigration Definition Transmigration of the soul or reincarnation is a concept the Egyptians and even possibly ancient primitives believed in. For the ancient, primitive people they believed in a religion called animism. Ancient Egyptians embalmed the body for preservation so it could move on to the next life with the soul or ka. Transmigration explained family resemblance; the soulfrom one dead family member was thought of capable of entering newborn babies. Reincarnation, interchangeable with transmigration, can be thought of as a process. After death, the soul is thought of to leave the body and seek another life source, human or animal or another living form. Simultaneously, while habituating bodies, the soul could eliminate impurities by doing good. If souls continue this positive lifestyle, they can return to the preexisting state, however if souls do bad, they will end up in Tartarus, otherwise known as the Christian concept of hell. Overall, Plato believed people should behave well in order to break the cycle and not end up in eternal damnation. Because of their reckless actions, many animals are suffering when they should not have to. As a matter of fact, plastic pollution kills millions of birds, fish, and 100,000 sea turtles every year (D., G.). With the increasing amount of this plastic trash, the death toll of these animals will continue to rise and will not fall until humans decide to take action. While many of these animals are dying because they do not know any better, that still doesn t mean humans should still turn away from the problem. Simple things like plastic rings, fishing nets, and fishing line snare and drown thousands of seals, sea lions, and dolphins each year, and while humans don t notice, it seriously affects these marine animals (Hayden). Even though animals don t die when they first ingest plastic, it makes it harder for them to consume other food that they need. In actuality, scientists found that, Once plastics have been consumed, laboratory tests show that chemical additives and adsorbed pollutants and metals on their surface can desorb (leach out) and transfer into the guts and tissues of marine organisms (Seltenrich). This just makes it harder for animals to eat, especially for the animals who need to feed their babies. Some of these animals starve to death; other ones that are nursing babies transfer ... • 43. Frederick Douglas s The Declaration Of Independence July 4th is the day celebrated when America gained declared independence from Great Britain. It s been celebrated every year as a country since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence since 1776. In 1852, the 5th of July, Frederick Douglas was asked to speak in front of northern abolitionists in New York of the holiday and the subject of independence and freedom. Frederick Douglas would be the ideal person to speak about freedom. At the time in 1850 s he was an African Americanman who had gained his freedom from slavery. He had taught himself how to read and write, which was uncommon for an Africa American to do, during slave hood. Most slaveholders at this time would want to keep their slaves illiterate. This was an era where Northern states were just beginning to nurture the idea of abolition. Being an abolitionist was still dangerous and censored in the south, and most northerners were just anti slavery, the difference between the two was one wanted the end of slavery total (abolitionists) and the other just wanted to stop the spread of slavery in new states and territories (anti slavery). Frederick Douglas, because of his first hand experience with slavery and his literacy, began to make friends among the abolitionists in the North and would be the best person to speak about freedom. He then uses this as a chance to persuade, particularly northern, people into becoming abolitionist by pointing out the irony in him speaking about the holiday of independence, and ... It is a place in which great clockworks of life govern everything from the largest interdependent network to the smallest details. As humans, we have evolved to perceive the world primarily through visual stimuli. In terms of intricacy and the area of the brain dedicated, our visual sense is the most well developed sensory system. Our eyes are adapted so that they focus on objects both near and far through the contraction and relaxation of the ciliary muscle (Kaufman, Levin, Alm). However, we cannot focus on everything at the same time. This process of focus is selective as we can pay attention to and process only so much information at once (Chen, Choi). As a result, humans are able to process some visual stimuli but may completely fail to regard other details, be they minute or monumental. This failure is described as inattentional blindness , and it can have several real world implications in our everyday lives. Experiments Take the following experiment into consideration.
