However, a person is not born motivated, it is something you must find within yourself to
achieve the things you want to achieve. My subject is a twenty one year old female college
soccer player. She has played soccer since she was five years old. She grew up with many
challenges on and off the field and has still found a way to keep herself moving forward. I
interviewed her about what motivates her and dealing with obstacles that pop up.
The subject has a strong sense of autonomy and competence, but due to low relatedness, her sense

weight, she regularly motivates herself to lose weight so she can be quicker and stronger to play
her position. This is where her autonomous motives help her see the value in her actions.
The interviewee s overall outcome is for her to reward herself by improving so she can earn more
playing time. Although her ultimate reward is starting in a game, she is happy just knowing she
always puts in great effort and gives it her all.
One obstacle the subject sometime faces is her confidence. When she is not motivated at a training
session, it frustrates her and she begins to temporarily lack motivation. This causes her to have
thoughts of making excuses to stop training. However, when the thought of making excuses
appears, she ignores them, finds the strength to push forward, and completes her tasks. Finishing
tasks in difficult circumstances reveals a strong intrinsic motivation on her part.
When it comes to feedback after a task, the interviewee is motivated in a different manner. She
completely disregards positive feedback, choosing to focus on critical comments for her mistakes.
