Hoosier is one of those odd words where everyone seems to know what it refers to,
but no one really knows what it means. Most know that it has been adopted to refer
to Indianaians, but its true meaning and origin are a mystery. This mystery is what
intrigued J.P. Dunn and prompted him to write Origin of the Word Hoosier

Summary
The realization that I was unequivocally now a graduate student occured to me when
I was sitting across from the counselor that I was interviewing for this project. The
feelings I experienced beforehand were both excitement and anxiety. I felt nervous
about being a guest at a high school and interviewing a seasoned counselor.
However, I was thrilled about learning from a veteran in the field and having the
freedom to ask the questions that I wanted to know.
The School Counselor that I interviewed was Ben Fraga of Iowa City High School.
Similar to me, Fraga had received his College degree in psychology before
pursuing a career in School Counseling. He had received his degree from the
University of Iowa (near his hometown) before traveling to Arizona State for a
Masters degree in School Counseling. After graduating and completing his
internship, he applied to many school counseling positions in the midwest region.
He ended up receiving a position at Lane Tech High School near chicago (close to
where I grew up). Fraga spent nine years as a school counselor at Lane Tech before
getting a position at City High and moving back to where he grew up in Iowa city.
Ben has now been a School Counselor for fourteen years. For the first five years of
his tenure as a counselor Ben was able to manage being a school counselor in
addition to being a coach for high school baseball. Ben ultimately retired as a coach
as he began establishing a family.

All we would have created is a higher demand on the government payouts for the
unemployed. There will also be a huge potential to increase costs for the

Serano addresses the flaws in activists Richard Spencer s and Milo Yiannopoulos
actions against freedom of speech, as well as the flaws in free speech absolutism.
The author explains how free speech absolutism cannot fully be achieved because
of the laws that protect our privacy, and how free speech absolutism can only make
matters worse. Because there are no laws against Milo Yiannopoulos campaigning
for actor/comedian Leslie Jones to delete her personal website, people are allowed to
use their freedom of speechto take away that same right from others. Serano
explains how she was scared to express herself as transgender during her childhood
because she witnessed people being harassed for their identity. The author calls
this the paradox of free speech. Another paradox she highlights is the paradox of
tolerance. If those who are tolerant do not defend against the intolerant, then the
tolerant will one day disappear. Serano believes everyone should be a moderator.

Gazzer and Chubb each win a lottery ticket. Bode and Chubb soon realize they have
to split the twenty eight million dollar jackpot with JoLayne, and become angry
because they want all the money. Tom Krome, a journalist for the local newspaper,
is on a mission to help JoLayne make sure that doesn t happen. Greed is defined as
the desire, most of the time selfish, for prosperity, power, or status. Most of the
time, greed is created when insecurities and troubles in a person s life lead them to
believe they can improve their life through selfish means. It often causes people to
transform in a negative manner. When a person is insecure about their position in
society, they often turn to greed as an attempt to solve their problems. Chubb and
Bode are scared of anyone who isn t a similar background to them taking control of
the society they live in. Because of this, they are led to believe it is their job to
create a group to stop it. Part of this involves stealing the lottery ticket from
JoLayne, who is an African American (Hiaasen 47). When they realize an African
American woman who won the other ticket, they believe it will be easy for them
to get it. This reveals that Chibb and Bode are insecure about an African American
woman winning the same amount of money as they did, which is why they
decided to steal it. Their insecurities about being lower in society is what fuels the
greed for the money. Additionally, Chubb is insecure about not having a woman
who loves him, so he kidnaps Amber, a Hooters waitress. He feels that every man
has a woman, so he feels he deserves to be with her. After seeing Chubb, Bode, and
Shiner with Amber, Tom exclaims, Look at those googans and tell me they know
how to cope with a girl like that (206). Tom is pointing out a key part of all three of
the men s personalities. Their desire for a woman in their life was so great that they
needed to kidnap her and she is thus able to manipulate them. Their greed to fit in

However, Tom feels that he does not belong there; he feels that he belongs
somewhere else. He dreams of adventures, like his father before him. On the top of
that, his mother constantly tries to inflict him with a feeling of guilt in order to
make sure that he stays at home. She claims that he will end as faithless and
irresponsible his father. Like his sister, he is victim of his mother s expectations
and comparisons . Unlike Laura, however, he refuses to have his life dictated by
them . He protests his right to individualism: It seems unimportant to you, what I m
doing what I want to do. As if Tom s life situation wasn t already difficult enough
as it is, it is made even worse by an important paradox. He constantly tries to escape
from his work and familial responsibilities by drinking and going to the movies yet,
when given the opportunity, he only uses his artistic prowess to recreate a
miserable scene from his past. By writing this play, Tom becomes the victim of his
own art as he is unable to use his own talents to bring happiness upon his life. Even
after having escaped his monotonous life, he continues to be haunted by his past.
Tom feels guilty for abandoning his sister who depended on him. This feeling of

The short story, A Perfect Day for Bananfish written by Jerome Salinger in 1948, is
based on the idea of how people change through war. The main character, Seymour,
has just gotten out of the military and is on vacation with his wife in Florida.
Through his wife s conversations, it is made apparent that Seymour has developed
mental issues since returning home and these issues are shown through Seymour s
longing for isolation throughout the story. The unusual part of this fictional tale is
the fact that many aspects of Seymour s life reflect the authors. A Perfect Day for
Bananafish does not just inform the audience of the severity of an unknown
mental illness, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, but it almost acts as
Salinger s way to express his true emotion about life. PTSD is a mental illness that
affects many men and women leaving war. It usually occurs in someone who has
experienced a shocking, scary or dangerous event; i.e. war. Most of the time PTSD
is a recurring illness that involves having bad dreams, flashbacks, and cognitive and
mood symptoms. This mental illness can have serious effect on ones personality for
the rest of their life. People who suffer from PTSD typically have negative thoughts
about the world around them and have a loss of interest in the enjoyable activities.
Currently there are many treatments for PTSD like medications and psychotherapy.
Treatment for PTSD differs depending on the person and the severity of their illness
(NIMH).
