Essays On Determination
Writing an essay on the topic "Essays On Determination" can present a unique set of challenges.
Firstly, defining determination in a comprehensive yet concise manner can be tricky, as it
encompasses various aspects such as perseverance, motivation, and goal-setting. Moreover,
conveying the significance of determination in achieving personal and professional success
requires careful analysis and relevant examples to support the argument.
Crafting a compelling thesis statement that encapsulates the essence of determination while
providing a roadmap for the essay can also be challenging. Additionally, maintaining a coherent
structure throughout the essay to effectively develop ideas and maintain the reader's engagement
is essential but can be demanding.
Furthermore, finding credible sources and incorporating them seamlessly into the essay to bolster
arguments and provide evidence can be time-consuming. Balancing the need for academic rigor
with personal insights and experiences adds another layer of complexity to the writing process.
Despite these challenges, navigating through them with determination and diligence can lead to a
well-crafted essay that not only explores the concept of determination but also inspires and
motivates readers.

A Bildungsroman In A Separate Piece And Great
Expectations
A Bildungsroman is a novel that deals with the physical and mental development
from adolescents to maturity of the main character in the novel. The books, A
Separate Piece and Great Expectations, trace their respective main characters from
adolescents to maturity. The characters of Gene and Pip have many similarities, such
as their personalities, and differences, such as how they deal with their desires,
throughout the stories. A Separate Peace talks about how jealousy can influence even
the best of companions, and how a seemingly unimportant poor decision can have
extreme outcomes. It is a story about Gene finding himself and facing his own
feelings. Gene was always at the top of his class. He went into Devon School thinking
that he was unbeatable. In school, Finny beat Gene through his athletic talents....

Pip learns many lessons through this rise and fall. In his journey, Pip realizes that
he should not be so quick to judge people because they are not usually who they
seem to be. The best example of this is Pip s relationship with the convict,
Magwich. At first, their relationship seems to be driven by authority and
apprehension. The convict bellows at Pip to get what he wants. Pip responds
because he fears for his life. Pip shows his fear toward the convict by saying, Oh!
Don t cut my throat, sir, I pleaded in terror, Pray don t do it, sir (Dickens 10). After
Pip discovers that the convict is his secret benefactor, Pip has accepted Magwitch
as his second father, saying things such as, For now my repugnance to him had all
melted away, and in the hunted, wounded, shackled creature who held my hand in
his, I only saw a man who had . . . felt affectionately, gratefully, and generously
toward me with great constancy through a series of years (Dickens 605). When the
convict was arrested, Pip pledged never to leave his
Personal Evaluation Of An Individual
Overall success begins with understanding your own tendencies in a large
arrangement of categories. Teamwork is simply a group of individuals bring their
own personal styles together with the goal of building a single cohesive idea, which
could easily be derailed by conflicting personalities and hardheadedness. The future
prosperity of an organization depends on the success in the individuals and
teamwork. On an individual level, it is necessary to look at general personality,
motivation, decision making, values, and attitude. Strong tendencies in any of those
parts can dictate how someone may act in a group setting and understanding the
differences can allow people to be more tolerant to conflicting styles of work. By

When I was working on my Associate s Degree, it was supposed to take five
semesters to complete, but I had a particular life milestone by which I wanted to
finish. I worked tirelessly and was determined to make my goal; ultimately I
graduated in three semesters and four months early of my goal. However, in the
process I was a difficult person to be around because all my mind could concentrate
on was making my goal. The surprising part of this assessment was that I was
unaware that there was a label such as Type A+, which I placed in strongly. For the
Type A+ group, a score of 120 or above is needed and I scored a 150. The analysis
included with the assessment explained the personality type very well. One point in
particular was when it mentioned obsessed with numbers, which is uncannily me.
When talking to people, I always feel the desire to define occasions or plans in time
since or time left. Another assessment that stood out to me about my personality,
though it did not have surprising results, was the one titled What s My Jungian 16
Type Personality? My results were returned with a score of INFJ. The recommended
possible careers that are associated with that score include: human resources
manager (which is my major), psychologist (which is my minor), teacher (which is
something I hope to do in the future), and novelist (which is a hobby of mine). I
enjoy helping people in their career and life.
Warrantless Surveillance
Warrantless Surveillance is a Necessity
Desperate times call for desperate measures, or at least measures that will
sometimes go against the norms. The idea of balancing security and individual
liberty is a false one, in my opinion. I believe this because we have no control over
terrorism and terrorists, we can make sure everyone is enjoying their individual
privacy rights granted under the United States Constitution, but we cannot assure
security from terrorists and their attacks. It is difficult to balance two different issues
when we do not have control of both of them, to do this we must first win the fight
against terrorism, and then focus on balancing security and liberty.
The intelligence community has been dealing with the problem ... Show more content

Terrorists around the world communicate via the internet, and plan their operations
and even recruit their followers by utilizing the same information systems that we try
to keep so private. Telling our intelligence agencies that surveillanceof such
communication without the proper bureaucratic requirements being meet is
unauthorized is counterproductive and it will do more harm than good (Van
Cleave, 2013, p 64). We must not play the song of the day just because it is playing
everywhere else. Americans need to think by themselves and understand that the
threat we face is greater than our internet and communications privacy. Privacy that
is not so private after all if we remember the hackings of Target, the Office of
Personal Management, Ashley Madison, and other internet based businesses and
organizations that were hacked not by the NSA, but by private individuals. We
should allow our intelligence agencies do their job with the necessary oversight and
remember that if we are not doing anything wrong then we have nothing to fear.
Regardless, it is ridiculous to think that the NSA will care much for your love affair

The Quiet American
Fallujah s End
Sunday 20th April 2004 Afghanistan.
It has not always been like this. There was once peace in this land, though peace is
now naught but a faded memory. When I first came here, i only saw the smiles of
the kids in the streets just kicking a ball or running around. Now what I see is half
broken roads with half or completely destroyed buildings with possibly invisible
bombs around the roads. Instead of travelling around this city in a taxi, I have to
travel in a goddamn Humvee. 6 years ago it was, when I first landed here in a plane,
being forced to come here to negotiate with the government of Afghanistan with that

It was only 7 o clock. I took a cold shower, since the time I have been here in this
country; I have only taken 2 hot showers. Sure, at first it was the worst thing to do
during a day, now its normal, suited to my lifestyle.
By the chattering and shouting I heard in the morning, seems as though Chris hadn t
come back last night. That had settled my plan for today as I planned to go search
the city to find him. Even though he was different, narrow minded and wanted
different things, he was still my friend in a way, I think...
Chris s special ops team had tried to search for him all day, but still no clue as to
where he would be. As for me I had been going in around the buildings and saw one
of the most horrible sights, which I could never forget. Literally, an army of dead
bodies situated in the middle of the road. If I had remembered correctly, this had
been the route I had taken to come to the air base. These bodies were not here before.
This must have happened last night. Unconsciously, I had started to suspect Chris of
being responsible for something like this.
It was close to midnight, I had searched for Chris all day. It seemed as though he s
completely disappeared. Obviously the search team would have searched this city
inside out by now. Suddenly, I had heard a loud voice, as if they had been screaming
at the top of their lungs.
Hey!
I turned around to where the voice
Peter s Ascetic Message Of Celibacy
In due course, Peter returns to Rome and the authorities soon after crucifying him for
his preaching of chastity/celibacy. To all appearances, Peter would have gone beyond
Rome; however, Jesus arrival stops Peter s direction and immediately influences him
to return to Rome. Undeniably, the death of one of Jesussupreme followers, Peter, is
significant; which, in turn, obviously this issue regarding celibacy endures
enormously important to Jesus that He instigates Peter s death for His convictions.
For definitely in the story, Jesus appearance encourages Peter to return to Rome; yet,
noticeably there exists nothing in the New Testament that references this strange and
courageous event of Peter s martyrdom, or of Jesus association with Peter s
traveling back to Rome. The story leaves little doubt of Jesus intentions; however, it
appears numerous religious scholars and others would like us to finish questioning
at this point. Essentially, explaining the reason Peter, and other Christian followers
taught an ascetic message of celibacy develops due to the end of time approaching
and follower s focus only directed toward God. Nevertheless, that dismissive opinion
occurs as to insufficient for such a major issue.... Show more content on

Consequently, Peter proceeds to escape town due to all the threats; whereupon,
Jesus then appears to him and gives the impression He wants Peter to return.
Conspicuously, Jesus presence appearing to Peter transpires as significantly crucial;
since due to Jesus the crucifixion of Peter has developed. Furthermore, with Jesus
acknowledgement, Peter endures being put to death for his belief in celibacy.
Astoundingly, this startling incidence endures as mind boggling and dramatic! Jesus
drastically inspires Peter to die for this belief; for indeed, Peter goes back to Rome

The Sarbanes Oxley Act ( Fraud )
Fraudulent activities and embezzlement are more prevalent in organizations than
most people think. Because of the multitude of previous scandals, the Sarbanes Oxley
Act has required all publicly traded U.S. companies to have internal auditing and
internal controls to check for fraudulent activity and embezzlement. While the
Sarbanes Oxley Act only applies to public businesses, the requirements of it should
be applied to all types of businesses, even universities. In the Case of the City
University of New York, having internal controls and auditingwould have halted the
embezzlement occurring there.

As the discoverer, David W. Chen is qualified to report on the updates of the case
and present facts and opinions. Chen s original findings are summarized in his
article Lapses by CUNY Officials Made System Ripe for Abuse, Report Says more
clearly states his purpose for writing. Chen hopes to halt the siphoning of money
that could be best used for students in need or campus projects. His previous
experience as an investigative journalist allows him to only discuss facts and not
wrongfully infer things regarding the investigation. He largely values his
journalistic reputation and will not allow it to be fractured by incorrect statements.
Both articles largely present facts about each case (Marino and Coico) and does not
make inferences about the reasoning behind the embezzlement or connections.
Instead, he restates court documents and enables the understanding for a range of
ages. This is one of the major strengths of his argument. He does not even insert
any opinions of wrongdoing. His lack of judgement keeps his piece unbiased and
strong. His use of quotations from various New York personnel adds personality and
personalizes the piece. The quotes also allow readers to have an inside look to the
scandal. Both articles state that shoddy oversight and ineffective management at the
City University of New York have created a system ripe for abuse that assisted in the
siphoning of money (Chen, 2016). The management there should have utilized
Survival Pros And Cons In World War Z By Max Brooks
Whether you think about it or not, something is this world could happen that
would change your life forever. Therefore, it could be life threatening or maybe
just leave you with scars. Whenever someone speaks of a life threatening event
like, a zombie apocalypse, people tend to blow it off. Could it really happen? Will
an infection spread across the world transforming humans into the living, dead?
You will need to be prepared to protect your friends and family; however, you will
also need the mind set to not be afraid to leave one behind. You will always have to
be ready for the worse situations. The novel, World War Z, written by Max Brooks
leaves readers with a lot of knowledge about zombies. Although many may not
believe in a zombieapocalypse happening, World War Z, provides zombie knowledge
and many survival tips; however, will those tips help a human survive this horrifying
act.

the novel, World War Z, one may be left with many helpful survival tips. With
knowing common zombie knowledge, one may have enough information to outsmart
the zombies. If zombies are spreading across one s town, one will have to take
action and not freak out. Overthinking this life threatening situation may leave one
dead before they face a zombie. After hearing about the zombies increasing, one
should take action, yes zombies are slow, but one will have to remember they are

every house in the streets. During a zombie apocalypse you will need to have the

town, his left arm starts to feel strange. He begins to take the bandage off to look at
the wound when he sees something very disturbing. The deep gash wound that
was left by the dragon yesterday was shrinking right before his eyes. The wound
was healing by itself and once fully healed no scar remained. He rolled his shoulder
in a full circle and up and down to see there was no pain, his shoulder was fully
healed as if the events that occurred yesterday had never happened.
As Kai heads back to the house, he wonders if he actually got stronger. He becomes
filled with emotion because he believes he has developed a new healing technique.
He wants to tell everyone about his new found power when a thought crosses his
mind. Why should I tell them? It s not for them to know. They will only start to ask

Breast Feeding
The fertility regulating effect of breastfeeding has been known for underestimated.
This has been due mostly to the lack of knowledge of the events associated with
breastfeeding that determine its contraceptive effect. It is now known that
breastfeeding per se is not a particularly effective or reliable means of contraception.
On the other hand, the period of amenorrhea associated with breastfeeding, commonly
referred to as lactional amenorrhea, provides an important degree of contraceptive
effect.

Their data suggest that prolactin concentration might provide a sensitive index of the
return of menstruation and fertility during lactation. According to their model, serum
prolactin concentration at any week after delivery is dependent on:
1. Some fixed early perinatal rate of decline in concentration. 2. The number of weeks
that unsupplemented breastfeeding continued. 3. The number of weeks of
supplemented breastfeeding. 4. The number of weeks since the onset of weaning.
The model assumes that ovulatory cycles would ensue once the average serum
prolactin concentration has fallen to a threshold below which ovulation suppression
no longer can be maintained. The hypothesis that the pattern of suckling stimulation
determines the extent of the fertility suppressing effect was suggested in a review by
McNeilly et al. Wood et al. developed a similar hypothesis in relation to their study of
the Gainj people of New Guinea. The authors suggested that a pre nursing
concentration of prolactin will be re established in about three hours unless another
nursing episode intervenes. They base their reasoning on the observation thta serum
prolactin concentration peaks within thirty minutes of initiation of nursing and the
understanding that prolactin is removed from circulation with a
Examples Of Dr Faustus
Dr. Faustus s damnation is truly an act of justice as he got what he deserved. He
knew the consequences of his choice but still went on with it. His desire to know
everything made him adamant about his choice to sell his soul to the devil and even
on occasions when he could ve pulled back, he hesitated but always pulled back at the
last minute.
Faustus, in his impatience to fulfil at once and for a moment, for a few short years,
all the desires and conceptions of his soul, is willing to give in exchange his soul
and body to the great enemy of mankind . (Hazlitt, William, Lectures on the Age of
Elizabeth, 1820). As for a tragedy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This great change certainly displays a poor use of free will. Faustus at first started
misusing his free will by coming to a decision to be on the same side with Lucifer
and later by making wrong use of his new given knowledge. He does not use it for
good works or send in name for to it to anything that benefits mankind. His last
unending punishment not only results from the very wrong acts that he made oneself
responsible throughout his living, nor his written agreement with the Satan, but rather
his pleasurably feel is feeling that condemns him to endless bad, unhappy place.
Again, this emphasizes how his unending punishment results from his own personal
selections made by his own free will more than anything other. Faustus would rather
make payment before work his pleasurably feel than take orders from and make
statement that he is at error. He makes responsible his father and mother,
predestination, and appeals both to Christ and
Kawaii Research Paper
Many Westerners perceive Japan as weird. While many aspects of its culture differ
considerably from that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that
while weird to some is fascinating and even tantalizing to others. One of the most
apparent of the cultural phenomena unique to Japan is the idea of kawaii. Kawaii is
a difficult term to translate into English, but the term celebrates sweet, adorable,
innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and inexperienced social
behavior and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii appeared in
the mid 1960s through the 1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls.
Around that time, as indicated by advertisements and articles from magazines, the
desire for a youthful look evolved into a desire to emulate a cute, child like look.
Since then, the term kawaii deals mostly with the... Show more content on

In investigating the history of kawaii, this theme of rebellion surfaces with the ideas
of rejecting traditionally Japanese culture in favor of more of a European or Western
culture which was perceived to be more fun. This in a large part includes the idea of
cute handwriting that Japanese schoolgirls would practice in the 1960s and 70s
where the format read like Western writing left to right and included English words
and exclamation points. This was an experimentation by the youth in being able to
speak more freely and through this they expressed themselves more easily with a
style of writing that they felt more connected to as a result of their manipulations
(Kinsella 224). The adults and older generations did not share the same positive
reaction to this cute handwriting as they felt it was blatantly rebellious against
Japanese traditions and cultural values they upheld
Historical Destruction Of Machu Picchu
Introduction
Many archaeological sites and artifacts around the globe have fallen victim to cultural
heritage destruction, whether it is from weather and climate change, tourism, the
taking of artifacts, or degradation over time. Cultural heritage destruction can be
defined as the destruction of historic sites, artifacts, or materials. Some people,
whether it be government, an organization, or individuals, work to protect and fund
the preservation and maintenance of important historic archeological remains. Machu
Picchu, located in the Andes mountains in Peru, is considered an archeological marvel
built by the Inca people. This historical site has come under protection due to cultural
heritage destruction from tourists and environmental degradation. A combined force
of tourism and climate change have caused Machu Picchu to erode from years of
touring. The Peruvian government has begun action to protect one of the world s
most well preserved architecturally advanced sites of the New World, and ensure that
Machu Picchu is protected for many years to come.
Background
The Inca Empire lasted throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, and covered most of
the Andean South America. The Inca called their land Tahuantinsuyu, or Land of the
Four Quarters , since it stretched out to the north, south, east, and west (Cartwright
2014). The empire could have reached up to 10 12 million people, with one emperor
and a large array of nobles and administrators. The Inca did not have a written

Margaret Atwood: A World of Feminism
American activist, Gloria Steinem stated, If you say, I m for equal pay, that s a
reform. But if you say. I m a feminist, that s a transformation of society ( Gloria
Steinem Quotes 1). Steinem suggests society is one that involves many problems that
feminism tries to address and fix but, to change it would take a complete reform of
society. Margaret Atwood, also a feministic, uses her writing to expose the issues,
stereotypes and, inequalities in society that feminism focuses on. Atwood s feminism
is established in her short story Rape Fantasies through her theme of vulnerability and
examination of rape culture. The short story Happy Endings also by Margaret
Atwood similarly presents her feminist views but through exposing and challenging
stereotypes. To begin, Atwood uses the theme of vulnerability throughout the story to
expose negative stereotypes about women. Firstly, the protagonist ... Show more

Trash Waste Essay
A simple chore: take out the trash . Take the trash bag full of junk, place it in the
bin, and let it sit till it s taken away. Now try to picture doing this with the junk in
your brain, complicated huh? Reality is, you could never fit all the trash you have
ever owned into one trash bag. Our brain is just the same, one trash bag will not fix
the full garage of junk we have in our brain. The problem we face as humans are
how we compare taking out the literal trash and mental trash. That single trash bag
isn t all the trash we have stored in our minds. The first bag of trash is only the
light layer upon layers underneath. One thing that strikes my brain while
visualizing trash being taken out is, we wait until it s taken away! We are waiting
for someone else to pick up our own garbage and take it. It takes years and hard
work to empty your trash on a daily basis. In my personal experience, taking out the
trash is no easy task. Through the past 3 months of health scares and injuries, I
have come to realize that I was never emptying my trash, but I was only moving it

what was broken inside. Dr. Hao said something that I refused to believe at that point

In today s world, the use of High Performance computing (HPC) is increasing in
science and technology, data crunching and data analysis problems. HPC uses
power of parallel processing to solve advanced problems efficiently and in a
desired time. The HPC users are now looking in Clouds as an alternative to solve
these problems in a cost effective manner. Using a cloud rather than a dedicated HPC
cluster reduces the overall cost of the infrastructure setup and its uses. Cloud provides

Pit Bulls Should Be Banned Essay
Since the 1980 s, there s been a high level of concern among the general public
with regard to breed specific aggression in Pit Bulls. The reasons behind this backlash
against Pit Bulls are threefold; longitudinal studies beginning in the 1970 s
demonstrated
that unprovoked canine attacks were carried out by Pit Bulls at a level
disproportionate to
their population, misconceptions about their aggressive nature made them attractive
pets
to owners who were more likely to raise aggressive dogs, and media sensationalism
in the
form of misleading coverage of Pit Bull attacks further reinforced their perception as
an
aggressive breed in the eyes of the public. As a result, many states have enacted breed

Blood sports were eventually outlawed in England during the 19th century, as

in Monica Villavicencio s piece about the history of dogfighting, in which she states:
In 1835, the British Parliament outlawed all baiting activities. Following the law s
passage, dog on dog combat emerged as the cheaper, legal alternative to baiting.

Analysis Of Bridge To Terabithia By Katherine Paterson
In the literature world today, many books have become banned. Due to
inappropriate content, many people have had books banned in order to remove the
books from public schools and libraries. Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson,
was removed from public schools because of the accusations of witchcraft and
inappropriate language. On December 1, 1967, the Office for Intellectual Freedom
was created with intent of protecting literary rights (Cho, 1). Enforcing these rights is
another task of this office, including rights that the ALA has established in the
Library Bill of Rights. The Office of Intellectual Freedom full heartedly tries to
inform librarians and the general public about personal intellectual freedoms that they

This book s setting was in contemporary America (Foerstel, 165). It reflects the
life of a family that is determined not to let its struggles overcome them (Alan, 1).
Originally written as a children s book (Fuller 1), Bridge to Terabithia has two
main characters, Jesse Oliver Aarons Jr., and Leslie Burke. Jess is the character
that comes from a poor background in a household that doesn t respect him
(Paterson, all). Leslie is the more kind character that influences Jess with her
personality, even though she does not believe in churchly teachings. May Bell
believes that Leslie s beliefs will condemn her to hell. Leslie became Jess friend by
beating him and his friends in a footrace (Alan, 1). Jess and Leslie later create their
own imaginary world to escape from reality, named Terabithia. One day, Jess wasn
t with Leslie, so she had to go to Terabithia alone, even though she was scared
(Paterson, all). She died attempting to enter Terabithia because the rope she was
using snapped and she fell into the creek and drowned (Alan, 1). Paterson wrote
that Leslie was cremated, although she does not know why (Grogan, 1). When
Leslie died, Jess was with one of his teachers at an art gallery in Washington (Alan
1). This scared his family because they were afraid that he had been with Leslie
and died with her. Jess was only angry at his family because he could not believe
that Leslie was really dead (Paterson, all). Jess did not come to terms with Leslie s
death for a long time (Alan 1). Although, by the end of the story, he builds an
actual bridge to Terabitha for his little sister May Bell to replace Leslie (Paterson,
all). Bridge to Terabithia placed ninth on the American Library Assocation s list of
100 books that had been banned between 1990 and 2000 (Grogan, 1). This book has
been on PFAW s list four times, coming in at 7th, 6th, 8th, and 10th (Alan, 1). It was
banned due to promotion of

If an entity has a recent fair value calculation for a reporting unit, it also should
include as a factor in its consideration the difference between the fair value and the
carrying amount in reaching its conclusion about whether to perform the first step of
the goodwill impairment test.
2. Once it is established that the first step of the goodwill impairment test must be
completed, the following steps must be taken according to FASB codification
section 350 20 35.4. The first step of the goodwill impairment test is to, compare
the fair value of a reporting unit with its carrying amount, including goodwill. The
firm needs to complete steps 350 20 35.22 24 to determine its fair value of its
subsidiaries.
The outcomes of the first step of goodwill impairment test will be either that the
carrying amount of the reporting unit is greater than zero, that the carrying amount of
the reporting unit is zero or negative or that the carrying amount of a reporting unit
exceeds its fair value.
In the event that the carrying amount of the reporting unit is greater than zero, then
the second test of goodwill impairment is unnecessary according to FASB
codification 350 20 35.6. This is because impairment of goodwill has been found to
not be a condition in this result.
In the event that the carrying amount of the reporting unit is zero or negative, then

Todd always seemed to have a odd look on his face, as if he was hiding something.
At only 6 years old he was caught shop lifting on numerous occasions and was
already starting to hang out with a few of the bad kinds on the street. This put his
mother Laporsha in a tough spot when it came to her parenting. She wanted all the

seeing Shawn, her brothers enemy. Her mind always dwelled on this, and she
knew that there would once come a day when Todd and his father were revealed to
her brother. Until then, however, she d been keeping herself busy with a part time
job as a waitress in Monti Carle bar. She d also been cleaning a old lady s house as a

Renaissance Research Paper
For the period of the Middle Ages, Europe went through a great ruin in the duration
of the 5th and 15th century. Europe faced great blows from both sides of spectrum.
For instance, one of the greatest fatal blows was the Hundred Years War. The war
not only caused famine, and starvation all around Europe, but also included around
20 million recorded deaths. About one third of the population was wiped out.
Countless towns in Europe had a loss of more than 40% of their population. In fact
Paris lost half of its residents and Venice, Hamburg and Bremen are projected to have
lost at least 60% of their populations. A popular belief in that time period was that the
devastation was a punishment from God. With little hope, people desperately... Show

This movement was called Humanism, the philosophy of rationalism relied upon the
belief in the dignity of human beings. This philosophy quickly grew and expanded all
across Europe as an outburst of human creativity and paved the way to contemporary
learning.
The birth of humanism was the beginning of the Renaissance period. The creating of
new inventive literature, expanding the once bounded writing curriculum. New
values were stressed in writing in the importance of poetry and books. Especially
expressed by the Father of Humanism Francesco Petrarch. He was one of the most
significant and influential poets and writers in the Middle Ages.
Francesco Petrarch was born July 20, 1304. He was born into a family exiled in
the town of Arezzo. He was the first son of the notary Pietro di Parenzo di Garzo.
He studied in law and religion heavily in his earlier, although his major would
quickly change, asserting, I couldn t face making a merchandise of my mind, in his
opinion politics were too much of a dishonest profession. Petrarch always had an
interest in writing and Latin literature, he quickly emerged himself in books and
began to write extensively. In his extensive pursuit for old Latin writing and
manuscripts, he traveled through France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. From his large
scale work, an epic in Latin, Africa, and his works began to be credited and worldly

Jean Piaget Stages Of Cognitive Development Essay
The stage of infancy lasts from birth until approximately two years of age
(Sigelman Rider, 2010). The physical development from infant to child occurs in a
cephalocaudal direction: the head and upper body develop prior to the lower body
(Sigelman Rider, 2010). Because of the rapid development at this stage children need
to get good solid nutrition and need to be watched closely as they are often unable to
coordinate their body or understand the dangers of certain situations (e.g., such as
when my one year old cousin put his finger in an electrical outlet). During this period
a great deal of developing and learning occurs. Learning is facilitated through
environmental cues, such as the behavior and actions of parents. Very basic skills
become mastered throughout this period such as nursing, crying, motor coordination,
and the ability to represent images with simple language (Sigelman Rider, 2010).
There have been many theorists that have described these changes. Jean Piagetwas
concerned with the cognitive development of the child. He studied the development of
the child s ability to think, represent events mentally, and manipulate symbols. Piaget
proposed four stages of cognitive development from infancy to adulthood: the
sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages
(Eysenck Keane, 2010). Abraham Maslow has been noted as the seminal proponent
of humanistic psychology. Maslow is most famous for his outlining of a hierarchy

The Economic Prosperity Of The United States Economy
The United States economy grew by an average of 4 percent per year between 1992
and 1999 (Pethokoukis, 2015).
The year 1991 began with the United States in a recession. Although short lived,
ending in March, it lasted nearly 9 months. Many factors played a role in this
recession, beginning with the stock market crashing in 1987. Another factor was the
savings and loan crisis in 1989, which according to Kimberly Amadeo was
considered the greatest bank collapse since the Great Depression. (Amadeo, n.p). The
Gulf War, which began in 1990, was another factor contributing to this recession
causing an increase in gas and oil prices.
The economic prosperity of the 1990s was mainly due to the internet and the huge
increase in technology industries.
Personal computers and the Internet came of age, bringing a revolution in the
efficiency of processing information and making workers more productive.
Manufacturing companies embraced more efficient production methods (Jackson,
2007).
President Bill Clinton signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act in 1993, which
raised taxes and cut spending. Many credit this bill with helping set the stage for the
large budget surpluses of the late 1990s because the increased marginal tax rates
generated billions of dollars in revenue for the federal government.
From November 14 through November 19, 1995 and from December 16, 1995 to
January 6, 1996 the U.S. government was shut down as a result of a budgetary
impasse between Congress and
The Importance Of Individual Achievement Tests
one in clinical or school settings. Group achievement tests might also be considered
as educational achievement tests, since these instruments are apparently employed in
academic settings. On the other hand, individual achievement tests may be an
important measurement tool in the diagnosis of learning disability. Not only do these
tests render documentation of impaired scholastic performance in crucial areas as
reading, writing, and numerical ability, some achievement tests can aid in identifying
certain skill deficits relative to learningdisabilities. In an ideal manner, individual
achievement tests should be used in conjunction with other measurement tools,
especially intelligencetests. According to Aiken (2003b), any test of ability (general
intelligence, special abilities, achievement) actually assesses what people have
achieved. Specifically, the items on intelligence and special abilities tests require test
takers to manifest some accomplishment, just like those on achievement tests.
Educational achievement tests often serve as reliable predictors of school marks
compared to tests of intelligence and special abilities, but still cannot completely
replace them. It is notable to mention that the individual s attainment measured by
general intelligence tests are indeed broader and the products of less formal and
usually less recent learning experiences compared to the ones measured by
standardized achievement tests (Aiken, 2003c). Cohen et al. (2013b) regarded that the
An Individual s Reflexes Increase With Age
An individual s reflexes decrease with age which affects their ability to drive. The
ability to make quick decisions is an important skill to have to avoid accidents.
Reflexes allow an individual to react quickly to a dangerous driving situation. It is
the time an individual takes to slam on the brake or avoid an obstruction that makes
reflexes so important while driving, Geriatrics poor reflexes create delayed reactions
which ultimately increase the risk for accidents. Reflexes are needed to prevent
various types of accidents such as rear ending and pedestrian striking. It is probable
that as one ages, the connection between the two hemispheres of your brain become

Cognition is defined as a mental action that is a result of intuition, sensation, and
perception. Medical Doctors at Washington University in St. Louis School of
Medicine states, cognitive impairment is defined as a decline in at least one of the
following domains: short term memory, attention, orientation, judgment and problem
solving skills, and visuospatial skills (Washington University). All important skills
to have drive, it is evident that geriatrics cognitive impairment affect the ability to
drive safely. Prevalent medical problems such as Dementia and Alzheimer s disease
also contribute to an older driver s cognitive impairment. Whether it is forgetting to
put on a seatbelt or forgetting how to drive to a familiar location, these diseases
affect safe driving. According to S. Lloyd, Outpatient surveys indicate that about 30
percent of older adults with dementia are current drivers (American Academy of
Family Physicians). Dementia can affect memory, visual perception, and focus while
driving. One of the most dangerous symptoms of Dementia is confusion. Confusion
varies including forgetting familiar roads, forgetting meanings of road signs, or
forgetting the basic rules of the road. It is evident that confusion at four way stops
and intersections increases the risk for accident occurrence as well. One of the most
prevalent type of accidents occurs due to brake pedal confusion. At a local
Characteristics Of Selflessness
Finding the right balance between being independent but not selfish is issue that
has been around for ages and leads one to ask, how exactly are they different?
Distinguishing between these two traits is not easy, and in many ways they seem
somewhat similar. However, despite their surface level similarities, self reliance is
a central part of maturity and independence, while self centeredness is a form
arrogance. One of the defining characteristics of self centeredness is being overly
confident in one s own abilities and rejecting help from others. In most cases, self
centeredness is most clearly seen as simply failing to take heed of others caution.
Such is the case with Chris McCandless who, while not being completely selfish,
certainly had his moments in which he displayed a complete disregard for the
warnings of others. Throughout his journey, McCandless is warned that the
Alaskan bush is too wild for him and that he does not know what he is doing, yet
he goes anyway (Krakauer). Self centered people do not see the need to take
advice from others, and in doing so they fail to see their own shortcomings. Self
centeredness is also commonly followed by foolish arrogance, which almost
always places one in a compromising, or even fatal position. In To Build a Fire, a
man is overly confident in his own abilities and it ends up costing him his life: The
man had been very serious when he said that no man should travel alone in that
country after 50 below zero. Well, here he
Bourdieu Theory
Homeowners faced design choices that federal agencies, corporations, builders,
architects, research and development organizations, and media outlets honed down
into a smaller list for the masses. I frame the design options that homeowners had
with two themes access, and science and technology. The theme of access addresses
the social, cultural, and political structures that dictated design options. Science and
technology encompass the construction processes and materials, interior materials,
and objects within the house. In some instances, the theme of science and technology
impacted access. I will illustrate how these themes frame and narrow the design
options available to homeowners when purchasing or renovating their homes.

Advancements in science and technology required changes in construction materials
due to economic concerns for builders and homeowners. Where plaster was once the
standard for wall insulation and construction, drywall was becoming the standard
instead (Lane, 2015). Plaster wall construction required skilled workers, and this
process is time consuming and costly to construct and repair, whereas, unskilled
workers could install drywall quicker and less expensively (Lane, 2015). The
combination of reduced construction time and unskilled workers saved builders and
construction companies money. Drywall enabled homeowners to renovate at a
reduced cost and change wall appearances easier with paint and wallpaper (Jensen,

Like Pride is the desire to be better than everyone and love only oneself. Wrath is to

desire for food, or its withholding from the needy. Sloth is the failure to apply your

wanting someone or something so bad you do anything you can to get it. I have
seen lust used all over this world and it can sometimes be a very scary thing. It can
lead to false love or rape and it can also lead to dictatorships. Lust is something
people all feel but have to learn to control as well. The story of Alexander The
Great is a perfect example. He lusted for control and territory and through this lust
he became one of the greatest kings back in the old days. Now I feel lust could be a
good thing as well but only if used right. Maybe your lust for someone can lead you

to control your feelings and your cravings to allow yourself to do so.Envy is the sin

Billy Budd
Billy Budd Thoreau and Melville
The story of Billy Budd provides an excellent scenario in which to compare and
contrast Thoreau and Melville. The topics of government inspired injustice and man s
own injustice to man can be explored through the story. Thoreau s position is one of
lessened government and enhanced individualism, while Melville s is one of group
unity and government s role to preserve order. The opinions of Melville and Thoreau
outline the paradox of government: Government cannot exist without man, and man
cannot exist without government.

One of the points Thoreau makes is his concept that democracies are only beneficial
to the majority, not however the most virtuous. He explains that, Why does [the
majority led government] always crucify Christ this points out that though it was a
majority decision it certainly was not the wisest. Thoreau then goes on to say how
with a majority democracy you have that one majority entrenched, which makes it
very difficult for those with true virtues and morals pursue justice. This belief can be
associated with Thoreau s view on democracy, he says that participating in it strips
you of morals and that compromise, the key to democracy, makes you a moral sellout.
A final controversial stand Thoreau takes against man and government is that it is
mans duty to not participate in the injustices created by the government and his
fellow man. He made an example out his own thoughts by not paying taxes for six
years, and spending the night in jail for them. Thoreau also states that one should not
follow the government if it requires you to perform injustices, he in turn suggest you
be the `counter friction in the political machine in hopes of making it wear away
sooner. In addition to that, he comments on the rich and how they continually sellout
their virtues to the institution that helped get them to their place of power and
wealth. He suggests

The effects of the drug are not limited to the user but spills over to include each and

Social service agencies have revealed how out of home placements of children have
become increased due to meth addiction in care givers. Thousands of children are
abused and neglected. The National Conference of State Legislatures found the
distressing fact that about 10 percent of meth users were introduced to the drug by
their parents or close relatives. The Drug Enforcement Administration reports that in
20 percent of drug busts made last year, children were present. Domestic violence
statistics have begun to consider the implications of meth abuse in their compilations.
Meth is also the drug of choice for women who choose this lifestyle. Besides
helping to keep up with the multi tasking required of a working mother, it is also
known to help with weight loss. A startling fact reported by a federal survey of all
people arrested for crimes reveals that over 11 percent of women had used meth, as
opposed to 4.7 percent of men. What starts as a low intensity use and a harmless
pastime can quickly slip into the danger zone. Both domestic violence victims as
well as abusers can be meth addicts. This puts the lives of innocent children at great
risks according to police

Analysis Of The Movie 42
The movie 42 is a story about Jackie Robinson s life as a baseball player, and how
he broke the baseball color barrier by becoming the first African American player in
the league. The story begins with Wendell Smith giving the audience background
information about the United States and their segregation laws, and he brings it in
comparison with baseball. He discusses how baseball was made up of 16
professional teams of all white players, but then Robinson comes in the picture.
The movie then goes on to talk about Robinson s career on the Brooklyn Dodgers,
but mentioning before his time on the Kansas City Monarchs and the Montreal
Royals. When Robinson advances to play with the Dodgers some of his fellow
players sign a petition saying they refuse to play with him, but as the season
progresses they become close friends with Robinson. Some examples of their
kindness to him include backing him up when the manager of the Phillies said
some racial slurs to Robinson. Another is when a Pittsburgh player hit him in the
head, and his teammates stood up for him. The movie ends with some facts about
other African American players joining the league, and a summary of the rest of
Robinson s career. 42 enhances the audience s knowledge on what life was like in
the late 1940s in the United States for a black man, and it displays the brutal
treatment they received. In the beginning of the movie it talked about how if a black
man served in the army they could receive respect there, but when
Comparing Shelves And Vampires In Stephenie Meyer s
Twilight
In the story Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, two boys, one a vampire, Edward, and
the other a werewolf, Jacob, fight for the love of a human girl named Bella. The
two are sworn enemies; their families having hated each other for centuries. I
couldn t help but wonder why werewolves and vampires are constantly pitted
against each other. It s a blatant trend in T.V. series, movies, and books, but why do
people put them against each other? One reason vampires and werewolves may be
constantly fighting in their realities is because of the large differences between the
two of them. Vampires, often portrayed as aristocratic and regal with a large lust for
blood, could see werewolves as mongrels, lowly dogs. They fear the beasts inside of
the werewolves.

How Red Effects Human Emotion and Behavior Essay
There is an influence constantly working on our minds, one that we may not have
even noticed. It follows us everywhere, and we can t escape it no matter how hard
we try. It doesn t make a sound or move, it just silently hides in plain sight effecting
the way we think. Colors are one of the most effective yet least thought about
influences on our minds. How come seemingly every super hero has a redsuit? Or
why are the super villains always wearing black? Why are hospitals never painted
red, and most businesses have white, yellow, and red for their logo colors? The most
emotionally intense coloris arguably red. Even though we don t always notice it, red
effects our moods, how we perceive others, our health, and even how we talk. It also

If one competitor is weak and another is strong, wearing red won t change that. But
the closer the levels of the two players, the more the color will have an influence
on the other opponent (Ahmed Abdul Sherif). Having red as a team color can
make the other team feel anxious, cause them to make more mistakes, and even
feel guilt or hatred while in the game. Pink, a lighter shade of red, has a slightly
different effect. Though still a shade of red, it has a dramatic difference in how it
can make us feel. Pink sneaks in feeling of love, serenity, and can drain energy.
Which is why often times teams paint their opponents locker rooms pink, in hopes
to make them a little more relaxed and drained before games. Clothing A study at
University of Rochester was done on how the color red can effect how men think
of women. In the first test, they held up one of two pictures. Both were pictures of
the same woman, but she was wearing red in one, and blue in the other. In the
second test, they held up one of two pictures as well. The two pictures were exactly
alike, but one had a red border around the picture, and the other had black. On
average 85% of the men said the woman with either the red border or the red shirt
was more attractive. They also said they would be willing to do more for and spend
more on the woman in red (someone). This wasn t the case when asked which
woman looked more intellectual. Andrew Elliot, the professor of phycology at

Wright Brothers Impact On Society
Introduction Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your
eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to
return. As said by Leonardo Da Vinci, flying is one of the biggest impacts on
mankind till this day. The well known Wright Brothers are the ones that you should
be thanking for being where we are. The Wright Brothers have opened up numerous
doors to technology and revolutionized transportation completely. By influencing
widespread tourism, stabilizing economy, and forming a better way for trade and
commerce, the Wright Brothers have done more than anyone by bringing people
together and spreading them apart (Freedman 2). Biography Dating back to April 6,

They have influenced widespread tourism, stabilized economy, and reformed trade
and commerce by their superb work in the aeronautical field. The Wright Brothers
have created a portal to widespread tourism throughout the world. Back in the 1930
s people began to fly commercially to get to their destination (Smith). Taking
planes was faster than boats and still is today and is currently used by many today
such as military and regular citizens. Next the Wright Brothers helped stabilize the
economy. Trade and production rates skyrocketed, which many airplanes carry
cargo (Smith). Trade and productions rates helped stabilize the economy because
people are gonna be paying to ship and trade things across land and water. Lastly
the Wright Brothers impacted trade and commerce with the airplane. People are
able to get ahold of things without the building of bridges or roads (Morris). Today
many people buy things online off of sites such as Amazon and they are usually
shipped by plane if they are overseas. All these things that the Wright Brothers have
done have impacted many countries and created global diaspora. The Wright
Brother s lasting influence has been their creation of the first working airplane
allowing people to spread but as well as danger. During World War II the Wright
Brother s invention of the airplane was used to drop troops off, supplies, as well as
doom devices such as bombs (Smith). The Wright
Explain How The Invention Of The Light Bulb Changed
Life...
The main idea of this article is that Nicholas Carr believed that the invention of the
light bulb changed life as they knew it. Carr said that the fire was the focal point of
the house where the families would gather in the evenings to share time. He
explained that when the lightbulb was invented the families spent more times in their
own rooms studying, reading, or working alone. In 1944 the germans forced their
people to use candles instead of lightbulbs during the nightly air raids because the
weak light of the candles were able to hide them better. So, essentially the light bulbs
were putting the German people in more danger.
The author communicates his idea of the light bulb changing the way we lived in a
very effective way by giving

Personal Values, Culture, And Religious Beliefs
Personal Values Personal values are derived from an individual s idea of what is
good, right, useful, or important. Values like honesty and discipline increase
efficiency and will aid in being a positive example to others (Boundless, 2015).
Values and traditions are typically shaped by the influences of family, culture, and
religious beliefs. Sociologist Morris Massey defines three periods in our lives where
our value systemis developed. These periods are known as the imprint period,
modeling period, and socialization period. The development of our valuesystem is
complete, according to Massey, by age twenty one. This development comes from
a mixture of learning values and life experiences (Hollinger, 2010) and our values
change or evolve as we grow and learn. Individual circumstances increase our
knowledge base and build upon the already present core values or beliefs. Our core
values are used as a compass in our decision making processes, likewise in order to
teach or counsel others, we must first know and understand our own core values
(LaVore Fletcher, 2016). Our value system is simply the central belief system of an
individual. The Christian Coach Institute offers a worksheet to help a person realize
his or her core values. From this exercise, my top values were Integrity, Stability,
Security, Spiritual Growth, and Health and Wellness. Another site, ValueCentre.com
offered a similar assessment. This model, Barrett Seven Levels of Consciousness

A Bildungsroman In A Separate Piece And Great Expectations A Bildungsroman is a novel that deals with the physical and mental development from adolescents to maturity of the main character in the novel. The books, A Separate Piece and Great Expectations, trace their respective main characters from adolescents to maturity. The characters of Gene and Pip have many similarities, such as their personalities, and differences, such as how they deal with their desires, throughout the stories. A Separate Peace talks about how jealousy can influence even the best of companions, and how a seemingly unimportant poor decision can have extreme outcomes. It is a story about Gene finding himself and facing his own feelings. Gene was always at the top of his class. He went into Devon School thinking that he was unbeatable. In his journey, Pip realizes that he should not be so quick to judge people because they are not usually who they seem to be. The best example of this is Pip s relationship with the convict, Magwich. At first, their relationship seems to be driven by authority and apprehension. The convict bellows at Pip to get what he wants. Pip responds because he fears for his life. Pip shows his fear toward the convict by saying, Oh! Don t cut my throat, sir, I pleaded in terror, Pray don t do it, sir (Dickens 10). After Pip discovers that the convict is his secret benefactor, Pip has accepted Magwitch as his second father, saying things such as, For now my repugnance to him had all melted away, and in the hunted, wounded, shackled creature who held my hand in his, I only saw a man who had . . . felt affectionately, gratefully, and generously toward me with great constancy through a series of years (Dickens 605). Teamwork is simply a group of individuals bring their own personal styles together with the goal of building a single cohesive idea, which could easily be derailed by conflicting personalities and hardheadedness. The future prosperity of an organization depends on the success in the individuals and teamwork. On an individual level, it is necessary to look at general personality, motivation, decision making, values, and attitude. However, in the process I was a difficult person to be around because all my mind could concentrate on was making my goal. The surprising part of this assessment was that I was unaware that there was a label such as Type A+, which I placed in strongly. For the Type A+ group, a score of 120 or above is needed and I scored a 150. The analysis included with the assessment explained the personality type very well. One point in particular was when it mentioned obsessed with numbers, which is uncannily me. When talking to people, I always feel the desire to define occasions or plans in time since or time left. Another assessment that stood out to me about my personality, though it did not have surprising results, was the one titled What s My Jungian 16 Type Personality? While many aspects of its culture differ considerably from that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that while weird to some is fascinating and even tantalizing to others. One of the most apparent of the cultural phenomena unique to Japan is the idea of kawaii. Kawaii is a difficult term to translate into English, but the term celebrates sweet, adorable, innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and inexperienced social behavior and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii appeared in the mid 1960s through the 1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls. Paterson wrote that Leslie was cremated, although she does not know why (Grogan, 1). When Leslie died, Jess was with one of his teachers at an art gallery in Washington (Alan 1). This scared his family because they were afraid that he had been with Leslie and died with her. Jess was only angry at his family because he could not believe that Leslie was really dead (Paterson, all). Jess did not come to terms with Leslie s death for a long time (Alan 1). • 26. Jean Piaget Stages Of Cognitive Development Essay The stage of infancy lasts from birth until approximately two years of age (Sigelman Rider, 2010). The physical development from infant to child occurs in a cephalocaudal direction: the head and upper body develop prior to the lower body (Sigelman Rider, 2010). Because of the rapid development at this stage children need to get good solid nutrition and need to be watched closely as they are often unable to coordinate their body or understand the dangers of certain situations (e.g., such as when my one year old cousin put his finger in an electrical outlet). During this period a great deal of developing and learning occurs. Learning is facilitated through environmental cues, such as the behavior and actions of parents. Very basic skills become mastered throughout this period such as nursing, crying, motor coordination, and the ability to represent images with simple language (Sigelman Rider, 2010). There have been many theorists that have described these changes. Jean Piagetwas concerned with the cognitive development of the child. He studied the development of the child s ability to think, represent events mentally, and manipulate symbols. Piaget proposed four stages of cognitive development from infancy to adulthood: the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages (Eysenck Keane, 2010). Abraham Maslow has been noted as the seminal proponent of humanistic psychology. Maslow is most famous for his outlining of a hierarchy

The year 1991 began with the United States in a recession. Although short lived, ending in March, it lasted nearly 9 months. Many factors played a role in this recession, beginning with the stock market crashing in 1987. Another factor was the savings and loan crisis in 1989, which according to Kimberly Amadeo was considered the greatest bank collapse since the Great Depression. (Amadeo, n.p). The Gulf War, which began in 1990, was another factor contributing to this recession causing an increase in gas and oil prices. The economic prosperity of the 1990s was mainly due to the internet and the huge increase in technology industries. Personal computers and the Internet came of age, bringing a revolution in the efficiency of processing information and making workers more productive. Manufacturing companies embraced more efficient production methods (Jackson, 2007). President Bill Clinton signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act in 1993, which raised taxes and cut spending. Many credit this bill with helping set the stage for the large budget surpluses of the late 1990s because the increased marginal tax rates generated billions of dollars in revenue for the federal government. Group achievement tests might also be considered as educational achievement tests, since these instruments are apparently employed in academic settings. On the other hand, individual achievement tests may be an important measurement tool in the diagnosis of learning disability. Not only do these tests render documentation of impaired scholastic performance in crucial areas as reading, writing, and numerical ability, some achievement tests can aid in identifying certain skill deficits relative to learningdisabilities. In an ideal manner, individual achievement tests should be used in conjunction with other measurement tools, especially intelligencetests. According to Aiken (2003b), any test of ability (general intelligence, special abilities, achievement) actually assesses what people have achieved. Specifically, the items on intelligence and special abilities tests require test takers to manifest some accomplishment, just like those on achievement tests. Educational achievement tests often serve as reliable predictors of school marks compared to tests of intelligence and special abilities, but still cannot completely replace them. It is notable to mention that the individual s attainment measured by general intelligence tests are indeed broader and the products of less formal and usually less recent learning experiences compared to the ones measured by standardized achievement tests (Aiken, 2003c). • 31. Characteristics Of Selflessness Finding the right balance between being independent but not selfish is issue that has been around for ages and leads one to ask, how exactly are they different? Distinguishing between these two traits is not easy, and in many ways they seem somewhat similar. However, despite their surface level similarities, self reliance is a central part of maturity and independence, while self centeredness is a form arrogance. One of the defining characteristics of self centeredness is being overly confident in one s own abilities and rejecting help from others. In most cases, self centeredness is most clearly seen as simply failing to take heed of others caution. Such is the case with Chris McCandless who, while not being completely selfish, certainly had his moments in which he displayed a complete disregard for the warnings of others. Throughout his journey, McCandless is warned that the Alaskan bush is too wild for him and that he does not know what he is doing, yet he goes anyway (Krakauer). Self centered people do not see the need to take advice from others, and in doing so they fail to see their own shortcomings. Self centeredness is also commonly followed by foolish arrogance, which almost always places one in a compromising, or even fatal position. In To Build a Fire, a man is overly confident in his own abilities and it ends up costing him his life: The man had been very serious when he said that no man should travel alone in that country after 50 below zero. This belief can be associated with Thoreau s view on democracy, he says that participating in it strips you of morals and that compromise, the key to democracy, makes you a moral sellout. A final controversial stand Thoreau takes against man and government is that it is mans duty to not participate in the injustices created by the government and his fellow man. Values like honesty and discipline increase efficiency and will aid in being a positive example to others (Boundless, 2015). Values and traditions are typically shaped by the influences of family, culture, and religious beliefs. Sociologist Morris Massey defines three periods in our lives where our value systemis developed. These periods are known as the imprint period, modeling period, and socialization period. The development of our valuesystem is complete, according to Massey, by age twenty one. This development comes from a mixture of learning values and life experiences (Hollinger, 2010) and our values change or evolve as we grow and learn. Individual circumstances increase our knowledge base and build upon the already present core values or beliefs. Our core values are used as a compass in our decision making processes, likewise in order to teach or counsel others, we must first know and understand our own core values (LaVore Fletcher, 2016).
