This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The
performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m.
As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which
allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the
13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was
evident in the audience s reactions to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule
of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience
was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons
of the Lubbock SymphonyOrchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students,
specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount
of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience
mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at
the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining
members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts.
These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great
performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the
performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the
intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience
reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case
was a relatively small and intimate concert hall.

Two houses, one home, the tale of Wuthering Heights has one of the best examples of contrasting
places and how it affects their inhabitants. Emily Bronte uses these two places to contrast on one

I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of
conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology.
Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined
as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly
thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light
transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber
optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the
ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also
much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are
much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of
lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers,

Polymer derived ceramics (PDC) were first introduced over thirty years ago, and are a fundamental
material in high demand today. Over the years, these materials have been heavily studied to better
understand how to manufacture them and determine their desired properties. Such materials
include coatings, ceramic fivers, and ceramics containing properties that allow them to have high
stability at high temperatures. Desired properties of PDC typically include high resistance to
decomposition, phase separation, crystallization, high chemical durability, semi conductivity, and
creep. [4]
This paper will discuss the synthesis and processing of ceramics and ceramic composites using
soft materials such as pre ceramic polymers. The potential for materials for a large variety of
applications in harsh environments, pertaining mainly to the mechanical properties of PDCs, will
also be discussed.

There are three basic steps in order to process PDC. These include synthesis of preceramic from a
specific monomer, crosslinking of polymers at low temperatures which allow for networks to form,
and finally ceramization by pyrolysis.
Some of the most common monomers which can be used consist of polysilanes, polycarbosilanes,
polysiloxanes, polysilazanes, and polysilylcarbodiimides. There are several procedures in order to
attain these figure 18.1 indicates some of the methods of creating some preceramics through

from banks. We have collected data from 120 people which have contracted bank loans, by asking

banks. The sutyd revealed that 67 people with a bachelor degree had a loan, thus more than 50% of
the total interviewed subjects.
