Equilibration. Piaget.
 Piaget believed that all children try to strike a balance between
assimilation and accommodation.
 As children progress through the stages of cognitive development, it is
important to maintain a balance between
 Assimilation, people transform incoming information so that it fits
within their existing thinking.
 Accommodation, people adapt their thinking to incoming
information.
 Equilibrium occurs when a child's schemas can deal with most new
information through assimilation. However, an unpleasant state of
disequilibrium occurs when new information cannot be fitted into
existing schemas.
Three Phases:
 First, children are satisfied with their mode of thought and therefore
are in a state of equilibrium.
 Then, they become aware of the shortcomings in their existing
thinking and are dissatisfied. They are in a state of disequilibrium.
 Last, they adopt a more sophisticated mode of thought that
eliminates the shortcomings of the old one. They reach a more stable
equilibrium.
 Equilibration helps explain how children can move from one stage of
thought into the next.
Questions
 Piaget suggested that equilibration takes place in three phases:
 First: children are in a state of equilibrium.
 Secondly: they are in a state of disequilibrium.
 Third: they reach a more stable equilibrium.

Equilibration

  • 2. Equilibration. Piaget.  Piaget believed that all children try to strike a balance between assimilation and accommodation.  As children progress through the stages of cognitive development, it is important to maintain a balance between  Assimilation, people transform incoming information so that it fits within their existing thinking.  Accommodation, people adapt their thinking to incoming information.  Equilibrium occurs when a child's schemas can deal with most new information through assimilation. However, an unpleasant state of disequilibrium occurs when new information cannot be fitted into existing schemas.

Three Phases:  First, children are satisfied with their mode of thought and therefore are in a state of equilibrium.  Then, they become aware of the shortcomings in their existing thinking and are dissatisfied. They are in a state of disequilibrium.  Last, they adopt a more sophisticated mode of thought that eliminates the shortcomings of the old one. They reach a more stable equilibrium.  Equilibration helps explain how children can move from one stage of thought into the next.
  • 4. Questions  Piaget suggested that equilibration takes place in three phases:  First: children are in a state of equilibrium.  Secondly: they are in a state of disequilibrium.  Third: they reach a more stable equilibrium.  What does explain equilibration?
