Neuromancer And The Matrix Analysis
William Gibson s Neuromancer, and The Matrix by The Wachowskis both depict a society in which
humans are under constant manipulation by indispensable machines. In Neuromancer, the protagonist
Case is indirectly manipulated by a powerful Artificial Intelligence named Wintermute. In The Matrix,
majority of the human population lives within a computer simulated world, run by machines.
However, both storylines depict the fact that manipulation is more abundant than is often seen, as both
protagonists are more frequently under the influence of other humans. Neuromancer and The Matrix
both demonstrate the nature of manipulation, and explore the fact that individuals are oblivious to the
manipulation that they face.
Manipulation is ubiquitous. Throughout the movie, the Matrix is presented to the audience as the as
the only source of manipulation, What is the Matrix? Control (The Matrix). The perspective shown to
the audience implies that the robots are the only manipulative force present within this society.
Morpheus introduces Neo to the concept of the Matrix, by saying You are a slave, Neo (The Matrix)
and further explaining it as A prison for your mind (The Matrix). However, even once Neo has been
freed from the matrix, he remains susceptible. Neo is constantly being manipulated by both the Oracle
and Morpheus. The oracle is able to manipulate Neo into saving Morpheus by telling him he was not
The One . In doing so, she prevented Neo from becoming arrogant, and careless,

Owl Research Papers
For many people, birds are seen to either be pets or wild animals. There is a massive amount of
species when it comes to learning about birds. One of the birds that I decided to do my research paper
on is Owls. The way I describe an owl is a type of bird that has a round head and large eyes, but there
are plenty more ways to describe an owl which is the purpose of this paper. An interesting fact about
owls is that they cannot move their eyes within their sockets like we can. In order to look around, they
have to move their entire head, which has a range of movement of about 270°. Which many people
find creepy and are scared of them. Owls usually fly and hunt at night, so are known to be nocturnal
birds. They eat mice, other small animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The smallest species is the tiny elf owl, measuring about 6 inches long, that live in western Mexico
and the Southwestern United States. The largest species is the great gray owl that lives deep in woods
of Alaska and Canada as far north as trees grow. Gray owls grow to about 30 inches long. Now that I
have provided general information about the owl it brings me to the part where I talk about their role
in the environment especially in Sequoia National Forest. First and Foremost, we need to address how
there is a couple type of species of owls in Sequoia National Forest. One of them is the spotted owl
which is considered to be the native resident in this forest. The other two types of owls are the
northern pygmy owl which is a small owl native to North and Central America. There is also the
western screech owl which is as well a small owl native to North and Central America, and the
females of the species are also larger than the males. In the article titled Population Dynamics of
Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, we are presented with a study to see the dynamics of
how spotted owls are populated around the Sierra Nevada where Sequoia National Forest is located at.
The article conducts a meta analysis of population data for 4

SWARM Stuart Keeler
Each day, Calgarians hop on and off at numerous different C Train platforms. While most of the
platforms are at ground level, sometimes there is a drab feeling with the concrete surroundings. When
heading downtown, individuals are likely to come across SWARM by Stuart Keeler if they stop at the
6th Street and 7th Avenue C Train station. The glass above in the ceiling lights to station with warm
colors, as the sunlight shines through the red and yellow panels. The grid like blocks are akin to the
view when flying towards Calgary and the grids of the farmers fields and plots. Affixed to the glass
ceiling are maple leaf seeds, that are often seen blowing in the wind; they gather like a flock of birds.
The piece is reminiscent of southern Alberta roots, and the warm colors are allusive of the beautiful
sunsets that light the sky in bright red, orange and yellow. Overall, pieces that allude to nature and to
the natural habitat, in this case Alberta itself, are effective in mustering feelings of pleasant memories.

When the sun has fallen, the piece glows with warmth when night falls, and its color is like the warm
colors of the sunlight through SWARM . Unless viewed from the correct angle, the piece appears
random and disordered, but upon entering the correct trajectory, the artwork comes together to create
this luminous yellow sun like disk. Again, there is a reoccurring theme of nature and its ability to
coincide with these manmade landscapes. The two sculptures are located on opposites sides of
Crowchild Trail; if followed northwest Crowchild Trail can take Calgarians outside the city and into
the scenic southern Alberta countryside. This piece helps to foster a sense of belonging in nature.
Rather than the expressway separating either side, it is brought together when viewed correctly to
form a cohesive piece of

English 4
February 14, 2015 Today the world is progressing and becoming more advanced with technology both
medically and scientifically. For example , surgery is one of the areas that has become more complex
and advanced. Nothing is more complicated than the process of a human being going through a face
transplant. A face transplant is a medical procedure to replace all or part of a person s face. Having to
remove part of a face is no laughing matter and is a very intense controversy that has continued
throughout the world today. On the 27th of November 2005 the first partial face transplant procedure
was performed on Isabelle Dinoire by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean

The first facial transplant in the United States was in December 2008 in Cleveland, Ohio. The
recipient was Connie Culp who had most of her face replaced after her husband shot her in the face
with a shotgun. She underwent a 22 hour operation. The first full facial transplant was in Barcelona,
Spain, in March 2010. Oscar, a spanish farmer wasn t able to breathe or eat after accidentally shooting
himself. He underwent a 24 hour operation. According to UCLA Health, eligibility for face
transplantation includes the following: facial disfigurement beyond reconstruction by conventional
means, patient is between 18 and 60 years of age, patient has no serious infections including hepatitis
B, C or HIV, defect not due to birth defect, patient is in general good health, patient will commit to
extensive rehab, adhere to immunosuppression medication regimen and participate in all appointments

The Invention Of Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was a great businessman who held over one thousand patents for his amazing,
tremendously life changing inventions. His entrepreneurship began when he was only twelve years
old, when he began to sell his self published newspaper to the people who passed by him, at the Grand
Trunk Railroad. At this same exact railroad, he set up a lab and began experimenting with chemicals.
At the age of twenty two he moved to New York, where he worked on his version of the stock ticker.
Edison seemed to be a very jealous man, after all he did make it his point, no matter what to stop
Nikola Tesla s altering currents system. He everything from setting up propaganda , to starting
something called the war of the currents. This means Thomas ... Show more content on

Thomas Edison was known for a many patented things, but was mostly know as a businessman. He
improved his career and lifeworks by copying other people s inventions and taking credit for them.
For example, he never gave credit to the other twenty two men, who had started working on the light
bulb, long before he had. The only reason he was recognized for this invention, is because none of the
other men were able to successfully make their ideas possible. This means that the invention that he is
most popular for is a sham. In the process of stealing the patent for the lightbulb, he got himself sued.
Nikola Tesla contributed the evolution of the Altering current system, that is frequently used today. As
a child he would see his mother, in her spare time, work to improve various, small household utensils.
Tesla moved to Budapest in his late teens/early twenties, where he temporarily worked at a telephone
exchange. Not too long after this Tesla moved to America where he began working for Thomas
Edison. Tesla was a man of many inventions, and also was the exporter of Thomas Edison. He was
hired by Edison to work in his Manhattan headquarters, in 1884, not to long after he had moved into
the united states. Many people say that Nikola Tesla was by far, more brilliant than Thomas Edison
would ever be. He even filed for seven U.S. patents in the field of polyphase AC motors and power
transmission. People believed that Thomas Edison was somewhat of the power figure in

The Ethical Philosophy Of The United States
Organizations have disparate marketing strategies when selecting choices that affect stakeholders.
Each approach touches the consumer and the Earth; it defines if the business is socially accountable
for humanity. When the ethical philosophy a company follows is for universal individual rights
regardless of the outcome, it is moral idealism. In contrast, when only considering the greater good for
the greatest number and appraising cost and the benefit of the choice it is utilitarianism. If the benefits
exceed the costs, then the behavior is ethical, if not, then the behavior is considered unethical. This
philosophy underlies the economic tenets of capitalism and is embraced by many business executives

A company incorporating structures to guide executives that considers all the variables began with
Robert Wood Johnson of Johnson Johnson. In 1934, he wrote a credo which became a structure for
other organizations to consider. The statement described that their responsibility was to all users of
their products, and that the stockholders should realize a fair return without doing harm to a consumer
(Johnson Johnson, 1943). These principles established ethical guidelines for Johnson Johnson and a
model for other industries. ¬The United States Civil Rights Act of 1964, the U.S. Occupational Safety
and Health Act of 1970 and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 helped companies to become
socially responsible (De George, 2015). Ethics and social responsibilities are evident with British
Petroleum s handling of the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010, and Toyota Motor Corporation s attempt
to create an eco friendly vehicle. Utilitarianism was exhibited by BP and moral idealism was Toyota s
motive to produce environmentally green vehicles. British Petroleum redesigned their name to make it
more environmentally friendly, it was changed to Beyond Petroleum, which professed their focus on
renewable energy not just hydrocarbons, and promoted a pro social marketing plan (Balmer et al.,
2011). In 2008, they defined their sustainable conduct: we aim for no accidents, no harm to people and

Antagonistic Coevolution Between Bacterial And Phage...
Antagonistic Coevolution Between Bacterial and Phage Populations
PCB 4674
Fall 2016
Abstract
Often termed an evolutionary arms race, the enduring battle between bacterial and phage defenses
against one another has shed insight into the mechanisms behind coevolution, and how these
adaptations have led to diversification and speciation within both populations. Research into the
relationship has yielded evidence that antagonistic coevolution can be advantageous for both phage
and bacteria, often resulting in adaptations that would not have evolved by mutation through natural
selection alone.
This review provides background information on the relationship between bacteria and their phage,
elucidating some of the mechanisms behind antagonistic coevolution and the resulting adaptations
therein, and discusses the controversial use of phage therapy as treatment for some strains of antibiotic
resistant bacteria. Data extracted from a study utilizing a species of marine bacteria and phage is
provided as an example of a few basic adaptations behind coevolution and how they can lead to
diversification in both host and parasitoid defenses, and subsequently, their populations.
Introduction Bacteriophage, or simply phage, are obligate intracellular viruses that invade bacterial
cells and take over the cellular machinery to replicate their viral genome and create new viral progeny
via lysis of the bacterial host cell (Buckling and Rainey 2002). Phage have been identified as the

Introduction to the Book The Premise The book The Innovator s Dilemma talks about how the well
managed companies often fail to stay at the top when they confront certain types market and
technological changes. The book not only talks about small or any one company, but those companies
which are big and well known for their offerings and timely innovations. There are many factors that
lead companies to stumble. They are bureaucracy, arrogance, tired executives, poor planning, short
term investment horizons, inadequate skills and resources and sometimes just a bad luck. In the book,

Sustaining technologies improve the products and services which help in achieving the same result but
in a better way. This helps the customers to understand the value of improvement. Sustaining
technologies are easier to use in already established firms than in new emerging firms. They focus on
improved quality and refine service over the period of time which leads to increase in cost but is
justifiable. Disruptive Technologies Disruptive technologies are the ones that bring different value
preposition to the market. They are usually cheaper and underperform the products in mainstream
markets. Being cheaper, disruptive technologies are also simpler, smaller and more convenient to use
too. They are usually technologically straight forward and capture emerging markets. As disruptive
technologies improve faster, this serves as a danger to established firms because they are so rapid that
by the time you know about them, they have had already grown up and are cheaper and better than
other competitors in the market. Principles of Disruptive Innovations The author have offered five
principles which would help the managers and entrepreneurs to deal with disruptive technologies. 1.
Companies depend on customers and investors for resources. Customers and investors are company s
value network and the companies make their decisions on the basis of their value network. Disruptive
technologies come up with different value, so the existing customers who are generally

Summary Of Letter From Birmingham Jail By Elizabeth Costello
For almost any right movement, or important period of time, in the history of the world, there are
readings that will correlate with these movements. For example, during the Civil Rights Movement
there was Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr., for the feminism movement, there
was Riot Grrrl Manifesto, and so many more important readings that go along with important
movements. These readings all have one common thing in common, they call for action in some part
of the movement. In The Lives of Animals by J.M. Coetzee, there are some points made by Elizabeth

Costello s beliefs from this standpoint, Doniger argues that the Hindus for a while believed in not

be eating what they could become in the future, and they will be spited for doing so. Along with

Generally, there are four strategic approaches for case study analysis as identified by (Yin, 2014),

theoretical position of the research and study objectives (Gray, 2014; Yin, 2014). On the other hand,
different analytical methods can be combine with analytical strategies in qualitative studies analysis

Mother Infant Dyads Completed All Aspects Of The Study Essay
Method
Twenty four mother infant dyads completed all aspects of the study. Of those 24, 18 were Caucasian,
22 were married, eight of them had an annual family income of $50,000 to $74,999, and seven had an
annual family income of over $100,000. Also 16 of the participating mothers had a graduate degree.
Not only is the sample size very small, but the demographics of the mothers is greatly
disproportionate. With the majority of mothers being caucasian, educated, middle class, married
women, the sample size does not accurately represent the majority of the population who lives in
relative poverty and cannot afford to seek help. About half of the mothers had a history of depression
and were taking or had just started taking antidepressant medication when they first enrolled.
Considering the size of the sample, all the mothers should have been either prescription drug users, or
not, but not both. Prescription drug treatment for any depression significantly changes perceptions of
mood, skewing the results, and there is not enough women in the study to make a concise prognosis.
To assess the mothers postpartum psychiatric difficulties the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale
(PDSS; Beck Gable, 2000) was used. Prior to treatment, mothers completed a self report questionnaire

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bamboo

Bamboo grows very quickly, with some varieties growing 10 feet a year. This rapid growth makes
bamboo an excellent choice when you want a natural fence and you want it quickly. Bamboo can be
tricky, however, and you need to be careful what bamboo variety you plant and how. There are many
invasive species of bamboo that are best avoided. Running bamboo varieties, too, can cause problems
and are likely to end up in places you and your neighbors won t appreciate.
Choose Your Type
The first step to a bamboo fence is choosing what type of bamboo you ll be planting. Bamboo plants
are categorized as clumping or running. As the name suggests, clumping bamboo grows in thick
patches, or clumps, forming a dense and bushy barrier. A clump is usually three to 10 feet around,
depending on the bamboo variety. Clumping bamboo stays where you plant it, so you ll need more
plants to create a barrier fence. Running bamboo quickly spreads itself, allowing you to grow a fence
using fewer plants. Be aware, however, that running bamboo spreads itself indiscriminately. You ll
need to take some extra steps during plating to keep it contained. If you don t, you and your neighbors
will be battling unwanted shoots forever.

Once you ve decided on a clumping or running bamboo, take a trip to your local garden center to
choose your plants. Bamboo grows naturally on every continent except Antarctica, so you ll have no
trouble finding a variety that grows in your climate. If you live in a colder area, consider cold hardy
species like red margin ( Phyllostachys rubromarginata) and macon rivercane ( Arundinaria gigantea
Macon ). Macon rivercane is also excellent for poorly drained soils, where most bamboos don t do
well. Most bamboo prefers at least five hours of sun a day, but umbrella bamboo (Fargesia murielae)
is an excellent choice for shady areas. Your local garden center is the best source of information about
what types of bamboo will thrive in your area.
Plant Your Bamboo
Unless you ve picked a variety that likes wet feet, plant your bamboo in moist, loamy soil. To plant
your bamboo, dig a hole that is 1.5 to 2 times the size of

Finding the Perfect Pet
What s wrong with Charlie? Claire asked as she held out her tiny hands with a motionless gold fish in
her palm. I was just playing with Charlie yesterday, but today he won t play. Claire s parents failed to
realize that when their child begged them to buy her a pet, that she knew nothing of how to take care
of a simple gold fish. She didn t understand that fish are not pets to be held or caressed like you would
a kitten. This situation occurs more often than most people think. Whether it is a result of an impulsive
purchase, emotion, or even a stray animal that you came across, many people do not take into
consideration what owning a pet may entail. There is a huge variety of species available, from
tarantulas to genetically altered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if every bad situation cannot be avoided, there are many ways to prevent most. Lastly, after you
have chosen the companion that best suits you, make sure you select a healthy pet. Taking in stray
animals, buying from Craigslist, or a private seller can be troublesome because you may not know the
animal s background. Even if the person selling the pet to you says it is healthy, it may carry a disease,
genetic defect or the seller may just be lying. You want to avoid that situation to help guarantee an
enjoyable experience for both you and your new companion and not take on more problems you aren t
prepared for. If you decide you want to purchase your new friend from a breeder or pet shop, you can
check to see if they are reputable by looking up customer reviews and experiences on the internet.
This will help you to avoid promoting and buying from puppy mills or breeders who do not take care
of the animals. The safest option for both you and the animals is adopting from a shelter or rescue.
They generally take good care of the animals temporarily housed there and may provide insight to the

The Human Brain Needs Relationship Essay
Today s adolescents I fear will lose sight of human connection and how that human connection creates
the ability to have empathy for others. After conducting my interviews and based on how I see young
people interact what I know is the human brain needs connection to develop empathy. Our brains are
wired to connect with others via mirror neurons and if most communication and socializing happen
through texting and social media our children are at a great risk to lose that ability to connect
physically and emotionally with others. I look forward to diving into this more in my research paper
that I will present in week 5. My first interview was done with my son, DJ. He is in the 8th grade and
comes from a split family. His father and I separated when he was only three years old and this
separation of family was very difficult for DJ, and he still shows signs to this day of broken
attachment. He struggles with emotions, especially controlling his emotions. DJ was primarily raised
by his father and his father s new girlfriend due to a long legal battle that I won t get into.
DJ was raised with his full blood sister, who is 9 years older than him, and two step sisters, one who
was close to his age and another who was a bit older. He was the only boy in a world full of women
and his father wasn t much of a provider. When he was eleven years old, I was granted sole custody.
DJ has experienced more loss and abandonment than any child should ever have to face.

Comparing Exult, O Shores And Ring, O Bells !
Two poems that deal with the harsh reality of death, done tastefully and beautifully in very different
ways. They have similar tones with different executions, Both convey the theme of loss though one
feels more like a story and the other more like a speech, and both were written in the aftermath of a
beloved president s assassination. The tones of both of these poems have a similar melancholic and
mournful tone, seeing as they deal with the theme of death. This tone matches how the writers were
feeling after the passing of the beloved presidents in their time periods. But with these similar tones
they have very different executions, Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells! But I, with mournful tread,

The Abolition Of A Person Through The Court System Essay
As America abolish slavery after the civil war, and thousands of African Americans were free to live
lives without the fear of slavery or undue punishment not all things turned out the way one could have
hoped for. Followed revisions of the 13 15th Amendments to the Constitution, provided the use of
exclusion through the criminalization of a person through the court system. However such rights as
described in the 13th amendment provides a claw allowing for racial divisions to persist in the
country. Such loop holes in the Constitution reduced freedoms by convictions through the legal
system. As described in the George Ritzers piece describing McDonaldization of mass plea bargains
contributing to the increase removal of a person s rights and exclusion from aid otherwise qualify for.
Such loss of freedoms through court sanctioned violations in America caused a national reflection of
American policies targeting black and brown people up to 70% more than whites. Reflecting on the
destruction of this clause in the 13th Amendment we ll evaluate why it was put in and what this loop
hole allowed the country to maintain. Through the work Michelle Alexanders The New Jim Crow in

The Finches From The Galapagos Island
Change is the key factor in a species survival, whether that change, is being minimal or extremely
dramatic, and without change a species have condemned itself to extinction. Animals have learned to
adapt to their surroundings in order to survive, and with these adaptation people can witness new
breeds added to the spectrum and see them flourish. Breeds can be defined as a stock of animals or
plants within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having been developed by
deliberate selection. For example the finches from the Galapagos Island s they are all finches, but they
all differed in their appearance, some had smaller others had larger beaks. Charles Darwin studied
these Finches and came to discover that the Finches differed in appearance because they had adapted
to their environment. The Galápagos finches provide an excellent example of this process. Among the
birds that ended up in arid environments, the ones with beaks better suited for eating cactus obtained
supplementary food. As a result, they were in healthier condition to mate. Similarly, those with beak
shapes that were well suited in getting nectar from flowers or eating thicker shielded seeds in other
environments were at an advantage there. In a very real sense, nature selected the best adapted
varieties to survive and to reproduce. With his findings throughout the years Darwin formulated his
theory of evolution by natural selection, and published his first book entitled, On the Origin

childhood toys forgotten at the bottom of a crammed adult closet, but they are never lost for good
(Gailman, 5). The young boy in the story returns to his childhood home as an adult and recalls his
memories. As he walks down his lane, the novels protagonist goes from a young man to himself as a

Analysis Of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day Of The Life...

The Effect of Structure on Purpose in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich One Day in the Life of
Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn follows a Russian prison inmate, Shukhov, through a
standard day in the gulag system. The novel displays Shukhov s struggle to survive through inhumane
conditions and how he deals and tolerates his suppressive and endless lifestyle. The novel provides
insight into the differing ideals and philosophical views that the very diverse groups of prisoners hold.
By using tools such as perspective and time, Solzhenitsyn provides a platform from which he can
bring multiple levels of meaning to an otherwise monotonous and uneventful account. Time plays an
important role in the structure on One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. The lack of chapters,
sections, or parts in the book keep the narration continuous, creating the effect of an elongated day
that drags on. In the following passage, Shukhov reveals the how time is perceived in the camp: No
zek ever lays eyes on a clock or watch... All a zek needs to know is how soon is reveille? How long till
work parade? Till dinnertime? (171) . The effect of time elongation is done with the lack of specific
times; events are only described chronologically and specific times are rarely used. Personal time is a
precious resource for the prisoners, or zeks. To the zeks, time in the prison camp is a contradiction
because there is too much of

Types of Sinkholes
A sinkhole, also called a swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a crater in the ground caused
by a sudden collapse of the surface layer whether it is the street, a field, a suburb, city, or other area,.
The causes of sinkholes consist of karst processes such as the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks
and suffusion processes. The formation of sinkholes involves the processes of erosion. Sinkholes
develop due to surface drainage or running water. Though dry places are thought to have less water,
sinkholes can develop in these areas as well as long as the correct conditions come into play. They can
form from human activity as well like abandoned mines, pipelines and sewers. Sinkholes are most
common in states such as Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.
Places with sandstone and quartzite terrains where the rock below the land surface is limestone or any
other carbonate rock that can be dissolved by ground water. When the rock below the surface layer
dissolves, spaces and caverns form underground. Sometimes it can take months or even years for these
caverns to form completely before the ground becomes too weak and collapses suddenly. There are
two main types of sinkholes. The most dangerous type of sinkhole is the cover collapse sinkhole. This
sinkhole shows up unexpectedly and can swallow cars, buildings and even people whole. Cover
collapse sinkholes are the types of sinkholes that

Enlightenment Ideas Inspired The American and French Revolutions
The American and French Revolutions were both fundamentally based on the Enlightenment ideas.
The main ideas that they followed were by John Locke. His ideas inspired the Americans and the
French to have a revolution. In these revolutions, the Americans had success and the French failed.
The success that the Americans experienced wad due to the protection of rights they had. These rights
are Life, Liberty and Property.? In America a constitution was put together that provided for a stable
government and also a representative government. In France failure was caused by chaos, terror, fear
and war. The French were unsuccessful because they failed to create a democratic ... Show more

What Madison is saying is that factions are going to be in a society no matter what. People are going
to have different opinions. Factions are always going to exist, and no matter what, the government
cannot remove factions because if they do then they are eliminating peoples rights. The constitution
protects against this. ?Liberty is to faction, what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly
expires. But it could not be a less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it
nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life,
because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.? This is one reason that the Americans had success
(Ziegler 216).
In order to control the effects of a faction, Madison said that the government needed to have a checks
and balance system. By doing this, factions are prevented from getting too powerful. This is the reason
why the Americans clearly put a checks and balance system in the constitution. In the constitution,
these rights are guaranteed (Ziegler 216 220).
In France, the French were completely against factions. Robespierre thought factions are a threat to
equality, and the ?common good?. He also thought that factions and everyone who had believed in
factions were a threat to the Revolution. ?Hidden internal enemies, with the word liberty on their lips,

Studying At New York University
If you are going to be passionate about something, be passionate about learning. This belief that
Knowledge is power has dawned on me from the very young age. My father who had struggled to
impart good education early in his life, had to start working at a very young age of 17 but he never
gave up on education. Today he holds 2 degrees of MA and MBA and still continues to do his PhD
from a distant learning at the age of 54. I realized that to excel in life, it is essential to keep learning,
and that work and learning are a continuum. I aspire to further my knowledge in the field of
Information Systems from New York University. My immediate goal is to develop my potential by
further improving my technical knowledge and skills through higher learning provided by a sustained
period of graduate studies; followed by working in an organization that can positively utilize my
abilities and help in overall economic and social development. I firmly believe that studying at New
York University would help me apply my knowledge and create innovative technological solutions to
solve socio economic problems. A structured environment will not only improve my skills but also
hone my enthusiasm to affect the critical process of change that development entails. For an engineer
it is utmost importance to become an erudite in his field. Management Information Systems gives me
that path since it parallels with my previous education and the work experience that I gained for more

The Value At Risk Management
Most people who have invested or are considering investing in any financial asset, ask at some point
in time the following question: What is the most I can loose on my investment? The Value at Risk,
commonly known as VaR, tries to answer this question within a reasonable bound. VaR is used in
financial mathematics and financial risk management as a risk management tool to measure the risk of
loss of an individual asset or a whole portfolio. Although it provides a good sense of risk one is
undertaking, it shouldn t be an alternative method to risk adjusted value and or other probabilistic
approaches. In the following lines, we first give a general description of the VaR and the story behind

Financial institutions, mostly commercials and investments banks, use the VAR to gauge the amount
of cash they should hold in their reserve in order to be able to cover the potential loss. Although the
term Value at risk has not been used till the1990s, the origins of its measure lie further back in time.
The arithmetic behind the VaR were developed by Harry Markowitz (1952) in his studies of effects of
asset risk, return, correlation, and diversification on probable investment portfolio returns which
contributed to the modern portfolio theory. In fact, the trigger of the use of VaR came from the crisis
that tormented the financial market and the regulatory responses to these crises. After the great
depression of 1929, the Securities Exchange Act established in 1934 the Security Exchange
Commission (SEC), a federal government agency in charge of regulating stocks and options
exchanges. Since the SEC initially required banks to keep their borrowing below 2000% of their
equity capital, Banks developed risk measures and control devices to ensure that they meet the capital
requirements. In the 1970, the introduction of financial derivatives markets and floating rate
exchanges have significantly increased the volatility, which is the risk, in the financial markets. The
latter was confirmed by the failure in 1995 of Barings, the British investment bank, by the
unauthorized trading in Nikkei (Japan s stock

Prostitution Laws in Canada
Introduction
Prostitution is considered by many to be the oldest profession. Throughout civilization many society
have had to address the issue of prostitution. Canada is a nation renown for promoting the
advancement of women in all parts of the world. However, it is a nation guilty of punishing women
for the circumstances in which they find themselves. The prostitution laws in Canada shows an
antiquated view on the issue of prostitution, it has failed to adequately protect women. It is important
that prostitutes are given an opportunity to protect themselves by employing security personnel if
necessary and choose the location for conducting business. This paper will demonstrate that the
policies employed by the federal government enhance the harm prostitute s faces. as a result of being
prevented by law from taking steps to enhance safety. The importance of legislator to balance the
individual rights of the prostitute against the interest of the collective society. Also, by regulating the
industry would shift the power from the pimps and johns controlling the services.

Children and adults alike have gathered together to hear tales of war and its glory. From the stories of

  • 2. Neuromancer And The Matrix Analysis William Gibson s Neuromancer, and The Matrix by The Wachowskis both depict a society in which humans are under constant manipulation by indispensable machines. In Neuromancer, the protagonist Case is indirectly manipulated by a powerful Artificial Intelligence named Wintermute. In The Matrix, majority of the human population lives within a computer simulated world, run by machines. However, both storylines depict the fact that manipulation is more abundant than is often seen, as both protagonists are more frequently under the influence of other humans. Neuromancer and The Matrix both demonstrate the nature of manipulation, and explore the fact that individuals are oblivious to the manipulation that they face. Manipulation is ubiquitous. Throughout the movie, the Matrix is presented to the audience as the as the only source of manipulation, What is the Matrix? Control (The Matrix). The perspective shown to the audience implies that the robots are the only manipulative force present within this society. Morpheus introduces Neo to the concept of the Matrix, by saying You are a slave, Neo (The Matrix) and further explaining it as A prison for your mind (The Matrix). However, even once Neo has been freed from the matrix, he remains susceptible. Neo is constantly being manipulated by both the Oracle and Morpheus. The oracle is able to manipulate Neo into saving Morpheus by telling him he was not The One . In doing so, she prevented Neo from becoming arrogant, and careless, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Owl Research Papers For many people, birds are seen to either be pets or wild animals. There is a massive amount of species when it comes to learning about birds. One of the birds that I decided to do my research paper on is Owls. The way I describe an owl is a type of bird that has a round head and large eyes, but there are plenty more ways to describe an owl which is the purpose of this paper. An interesting fact about owls is that they cannot move their eyes within their sockets like we can. In order to look around, they have to move their entire head, which has a range of movement of about 270°. Which many people find creepy and are scared of them. Owls usually fly and hunt at night, so are known to be nocturnal birds. They eat mice, other small animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The smallest species is the tiny elf owl, measuring about 6 inches long, that live in western Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The largest species is the great gray owl that lives deep in woods of Alaska and Canada as far north as trees grow. Gray owls grow to about 30 inches long. Now that I have provided general information about the owl it brings me to the part where I talk about their role in the environment especially in Sequoia National Forest. First and Foremost, we need to address how there is a couple type of species of owls in Sequoia National Forest. One of them is the spotted owl which is considered to be the native resident in this forest. The other two types of owls are the northern pygmy owl which is a small owl native to North and Central America. There is also the western screech owl which is as well a small owl native to North and Central America, and the females of the species are also larger than the males. In the article titled Population Dynamics of Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, we are presented with a study to see the dynamics of how spotted owls are populated around the Sierra Nevada where Sequoia National Forest is located at. • 4. SWARM Stuart Keeler Each day, Calgarians hop on and off at numerous different C Train platforms. While most of the platforms are at ground level, sometimes there is a drab feeling with the concrete surroundings. When heading downtown, individuals are likely to come across SWARM by Stuart Keeler if they stop at the 6th Street and 7th Avenue C Train station. The glass above in the ceiling lights to station with warm colors, as the sunlight shines through the red and yellow panels. The grid like blocks are akin to the view when flying towards Calgary and the grids of the farmers fields and plots. Affixed to the glass ceiling are maple leaf seeds, that are often seen blowing in the wind; they gather like a flock of birds. The piece is reminiscent of southern Alberta roots, and the warm colors are allusive of the beautiful sunsets that light the sky in bright red, orange and yellow. Overall, pieces that allude to nature and to the natural habitat, in this case Alberta itself, are effective in mustering feelings of pleasant memories. By fostering recollections of ones past, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the sun has fallen, the piece glows with warmth when night falls, and its color is like the warm colors of the sunlight through SWARM . Unless viewed from the correct angle, the piece appears random and disordered, but upon entering the correct trajectory, the artwork comes together to create this luminous yellow sun like disk. Again, there is a reoccurring theme of nature and its ability to coincide with these manmade landscapes. The two sculptures are located on opposites sides of Crowchild Trail; if followed northwest Crowchild Trail can take Calgarians outside the city and into the scenic southern Alberta countryside. This piece helps to foster a sense of belonging in nature. Rather than the expressway separating either side, it is brought together when viewed correctly to form a cohesive piece of ... For example, he never gave credit to the other twenty two men, who had started working on the light bulb, long before he had. The only reason he was recognized for this invention, is because none of the other men were able to successfully make their ideas possible. This means that the invention that he is most popular for is a sham. In the process of stealing the patent for the lightbulb, he got himself sued. Nikola Tesla contributed the evolution of the Altering current system, that is frequently used today. As a child he would see his mother, in her spare time, work to improve various, small household utensils. In contrast, when only considering the greater good for the greatest number and appraising cost and the benefit of the choice it is utilitarianism. • 12. Antagonistic Coevolution Between Bacterial And Phage... Antagonistic Coevolution Between Bacterial and Phage Populations PCB 4674 Fall 2016 Abstract Often termed an evolutionary arms race, the enduring battle between bacterial and phage defenses against one another has shed insight into the mechanisms behind coevolution, and how these adaptations have led to diversification and speciation within both populations. Research into the relationship has yielded evidence that antagonistic coevolution can be advantageous for both phage and bacteria, often resulting in adaptations that would not have evolved by mutation through natural selection alone. This review provides background information on the relationship between bacteria and their phage, elucidating some of the mechanisms behind antagonistic coevolution and the resulting adaptations therein, and discusses the controversial use of phage therapy as treatment for some strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Data extracted from a study utilizing a species of marine bacteria and phage is provided as an example of a few basic adaptations behind coevolution and how they can lead to diversification in both host and parasitoid defenses, and subsequently, their populations. Introduction Bacteriophage, or simply phage, are obligate intracellular viruses that invade bacterial cells and take over the cellular machinery to replicate their viral genome and create new viral progeny via lysis of the bacterial host cell (Buckling and Rainey 2002). • 17. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bamboo 5760 × 3840 Caption Alternate Text Group Bamboo grows very quickly, with some varieties growing 10 feet a year. This rapid growth makes bamboo an excellent choice when you want a natural fence and you want it quickly. Bamboo can be tricky, however, and you need to be careful what bamboo variety you plant and how. There are many invasive species of bamboo that are best avoided. Running bamboo varieties, too, can cause problems and are likely to end up in places you and your neighbors won t appreciate. Choose Your Type The first step to a bamboo fence is choosing what type of bamboo you ll be planting. Bamboo plants are categorized as clumping or running. As the name suggests, clumping bamboo grows in thick patches, or clumps, forming a dense and bushy barrier. A clump is usually three to 10 feet around, depending on the bamboo variety. Clumping bamboo stays where you plant it, so you ll need more plants to create a barrier fence. Running bamboo quickly spreads itself, allowing you to grow a fence using fewer plants. Be aware, however, that running bamboo spreads itself indiscriminately. You ll need to take some extra steps during plating to keep it contained. If you don t, you and your neighbors will be battling unwanted shoots forever. Choose a Variety 3456 × 2304 Caption Alternate Text Group Once you ve decided on a clumping or running bamboo, take a trip to your local garden center to choose your plants. Bamboo grows naturally on every continent except Antarctica, so you ll have no trouble finding a variety that grows in your climate. If you live in a colder area, consider cold hardy species like red margin ( Phyllostachys rubromarginata) and macon rivercane ( Arundinaria gigantea Macon ). Macon rivercane is also excellent for poorly drained soils, where most bamboos don t do well. Most bamboo prefers at least five hours of sun a day, but umbrella bamboo (Fargesia murielae) is an excellent choice for shady areas. Your local garden center is the best source of information about what types of bamboo will thrive in your area. Plant Your Bamboo Unless you ve picked a variety that likes wet feet, plant your bamboo in moist, loamy soil. To plant your bamboo, dig a hole that is 1.5 to 2 times the size of

The Finches From The Galapagos Island Change is the key factor in a species survival, whether that change, is being minimal or extremely dramatic, and without change a species have condemned itself to extinction. Animals have learned to adapt to their surroundings in order to survive, and with these adaptation people can witness new breeds added to the spectrum and see them flourish. Breeds can be defined as a stock of animals or plants within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having been developed by deliberate selection. For example the finches from the Galapagos Island s they are all finches, but they all differed in their appearance, some had smaller others had larger beaks. Charles Darwin studied these Finches and came to discover that the Finches differed in appearance because they had adapted to their environment. The Galápagos finches provide an excellent example of this process. Among the birds that ended up in arid environments, the ones with beaks better suited for eating cactus obtained supplementary food. As a result, they were in healthier condition to mate. Similarly, those with beak shapes that were well suited in getting nectar from flowers or eating thicker shielded seeds in other environments were at an advantage there. My rainbow colored hoodie is wrapped around me. People canoeing on the lake call my name, Graeson! They say, I smile and wave in their direction. I wonder if they can see me from my spot behind the trees and poles. All of the sudden the person in front of me in line steps up to the ladder. One of the people working at New Life Ranch tightens the helmet on the kid s head. Then they attach a metal cable to his harness attached with a metal buckle. David Cheng Ms. Chappell AP English 15 November 2015 The Effect of Structure on Purpose in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn follows a Russian prison inmate, Shukhov, through a standard day in the gulag system. The novel displays Shukhov s struggle to survive through inhumane conditions and how he deals and tolerates his suppressive and endless lifestyle. The novel provides insight into the differing ideals and philosophical views that the very diverse groups of prisoners hold. By using tools such as perspective and time, Solzhenitsyn provides a platform from which he can bring multiple levels of meaning to an otherwise monotonous and uneventful account. Time plays an important role in the structure on One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. The lack of chapters, sections, or parts in the book keep the narration continuous, creating the effect of an elongated day that drags on. In the following passage, Shukhov reveals the how time is perceived in the camp: No zek ever lays eyes on a clock or watch... All a zek needs to know is how soon is reveille? How long till work parade? Till dinnertime? (171) . The effect of time elongation is done with the lack of specific times; events are only described chronologically and specific times are rarely used. Personal time is a precious resource for the prisoners, or zeks. To the zeks, time in the prison camp is a contradiction because there is too much of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Types of Sinkholes A sinkhole, also called a swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a crater in the ground caused by a sudden collapse of the surface layer whether it is the street, a field, a suburb, city, or other area,. The causes of sinkholes consist of karst processes such as the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks and suffusion processes. The formation of sinkholes involves the processes of erosion. Sinkholes develop due to surface drainage or running water. Though dry places are thought to have less water, sinkholes can develop in these areas as well as long as the correct conditions come into play. They can form from human activity as well like abandoned mines, pipelines and sewers. Sinkholes are most common in states such as Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Places with sandstone and quartzite terrains where the rock below the land surface is limestone or any other carbonate rock that can be dissolved by ground water. When the rock below the surface layer dissolves, spaces and caverns form underground. Sometimes it can take months or even years for these caverns to form completely before the ground becomes too weak and collapses suddenly. There are two main types of sinkholes. The most dangerous type of sinkhole is the cover collapse sinkhole. This sinkhole shows up unexpectedly and can swallow cars, buildings and even people whole. What Madison is saying is that factions are going to be in a society no matter what. People are going to have different opinions. Factions are always going to exist, and no matter what, the government cannot remove factions because if they do then they are eliminating peoples rights. The constitution protects against this. ?Liberty is to faction, what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be a less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life, because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.? This is one reason that the Americans had success (Ziegler 216). In order to control the effects of a faction, Madison said that the government needed to have a checks and balance system. By doing this, factions are prevented from getting too powerful. This is the reason why the Americans clearly put a checks and balance system in the constitution. In the constitution, these rights are guaranteed (Ziegler 216 220). In France, the French were completely against factions. Robespierre thought factions are a threat to equality, and the ?common good?. Financial institutions, mostly commercials and investments banks, use the VAR to gauge the amount of cash they should hold in their reserve in order to be able to cover the potential loss. Although the term Value at risk has not been used till the1990s, the origins of its measure lie further back in time. The arithmetic behind the VaR were developed by Harry Markowitz (1952) in his studies of effects of asset risk, return, correlation, and diversification on probable investment portfolio returns which contributed to the modern portfolio theory. In fact, the trigger of the use of VaR came from the crisis that tormented the financial market and the regulatory responses to these crises. After the great depression of 1929, the Securities Exchange Act established in 1934 the Security Exchange Commission (SEC), a federal government agency in charge of regulating stocks and options exchanges. Since the SEC initially required banks to keep their borrowing below 2000% of their equity capital, Banks developed risk measures and control devices to ensure that they meet the capital requirements. In the 1970, the introduction of financial derivatives markets and floating rate exchanges have significantly increased the volatility, which is the risk, in the financial markets. The latter was confirmed by the failure in 1995 of Barings, the British investment bank, by the unauthorized trading in Nikkei (Japan s stock ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
