The iconography contained in this painting is religious for the most obvious reasons such as the
depiction of the Virgin Mary, baby Jesus, along with the angel holding the Virgin s crown. Also, the
capitals that are shown on the left include scenes from the Old Testament which highlight humanity
errors. Some of the errors that are depicted are Adam and Eve getting thrown out from the Garden of
Eden, the sacrifice of Caine and Abel, God receiving Abel s offering, along with other scenes. Another
reason why there is religious iconography can be seen between the positions of the individuals who
are being portrayed. For example, the chancellor appears to be kneeling down towards baby Jesus and

When I saw the painting they really didn t stand out to much at all, my attention was more drawn with
the details on the floor leading my eyes to the background outside. In other words my eyes sort of
skipped the capitals on the left hand side. After I read what the capitals depicted I googled the image
to see if I could find a closer look into this part of the painting, which I did find and I was able to see
