Introduction:
∞ lardizabal –
the value of the assignment in the
teaching-learning process has long
been recognized by educator.
* Good Teachers plan their assignment well because
they know that the success of any lesson depends in a
large measure on the kind of assignment given to the
students.
Meaning and Importance of the Assignments
The modern teacher looks at the
assignment as:
a) A job to be done either at home or in class;
b) A lesson to be studied;
c) A theme to be written;
d) A project to be accomplished;
e) An exercise to be explained ;
f) A selection to be memorized ;
g) A question to be answered ;
h) An interview to be accomplished ; and
i) A review of the past lesson or lessons.
* The assignment is the chief
means stimulating and directing
learning activities inside or
outside the classroom. It helps in
creating favorable attitude
towards the task to be done. The
student take pride in their
accomplishments and each
assignment completed is regarded
as an accomplishment which
serves to motivate the student to
Types of assignments
1) INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS- the most time-and-
effort-consuming task for the teacher since
he must consider each pupil’s need, interests,
abilities, and achievement level.
2) DAY-TO-DAY ASSIGNMENTS- Daily assignments given
by the teachers in every subject.
3) GROUP ASSIGNMENT- May be for a small group
or it may be for the whole class .
4) LONG-RANGE ASSIGNMENT- Projects or
activities to be accomplished over a
greater length of time .
Functions of the Assignment
• First Function- to set the goal or
direction of the learning activity.
• Second Function- to review past
lessons in preparation for a long test or it
may call for organization of ideas and
concepts.
• Third function- to motivate the pupils
and prepare them for the job to be done.
Some question to ask at this point should be:
• Is the activity worthwhile?
• Is the task within the interest and capability of the
student?
• Does it take into consideration the length and difficulty
of the assignment?
• Fourth function- deals with setting up
definite learning activities to be carried
out.
• Fifth function- deals with providing
directions for the learning activity.
• Sixth function- to do with establishment
of the habits of studying regularly.
Requisites of a good assignment
Authorities on principles and methods of
teaching agree that a good assignment
should be:
1) Clear and definite
2) Relates new learning to the old;
3) Significant to the learner;
4) Stimulating and challenging;
5) Adapter’s to the learner’s ability;
6) Comprehensive; and
7) Includes large units of work.
When to give assignments ?
There is no fixed time when
assignment should be given. It may be
given at any time during the recitation
when the psychological moment arises.
Pointers to consider in giving assignments:
1) Make clear to the students the aims of the
assigned task.
2) Make clear all directions, procedures,
steps, cautions that involved in the
assignments.
3) Clear all difficulties so that learning will be
smooth and continuous.
4) Evaluation of the project or task should be
very clear.
5) Assignments should not be given as
punishment.
6) Provisions for enough time to complete
the assignment should be given.
7) Teachers should distinguish between
homework and assignments.
8) Assignments should be within the ability
of students in amount and difficulty.
9) Assignments must be check.
10) Assignments should be varied and
interesting.
Evaluation of the assignment
1) Are the objectives of the assignment attainable?
2) Are the sources of materials available and
accessible to students?
3) Are the directions clear and specific?
4) Are the activities meaningful and
worthwhile?
5) Does the assignment make use of past
experiences of students?
