Earthquakes originate from sudden movements below the earth's surface that cause the ground to shake. Seismic waves travel outward from the earthquake focus, which is the point of origin inside the earth, to the epicenter, which is the point on the surface directly above the focus. Earthquakes are studied by the science of seismology using instruments like seismographs and Richter scales. Major effects of earthquakes include cracks in the ground, landslides, tsunamis, and damage to human life and structures. About 60% occur in the Pacific Ring of Fire region, including Chile, California, Alaska, Japan, and New Zealand. Establishing more seismic stations could help issue earthquake warnings.
