An earthquake is a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Seismic activity refers to the frequency, type, and size of earthquakes in a given period of time. Earthquakes are measured using seismometers and originate from a hypocenter or focus, located at the epicenter on the Earth's surface above the point of rupture. Earthquakes are typically caused by the rupture of geological faults, volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, or nuclear tests and can result in shaking, ground rupture, tsunamis, landslides, fires, flooding, and other damage. To survive an earthquake, one should prepare and remain calm during shaking.
