1) Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy in Earth's crust from tectonic plate movement. 2) Seismic waves from earthquakes travel outward from the focus, with P and S waves detected by seismographs to locate the epicenter. 3) The magnitude scale is used to measure earthquake strength based on seismic wave amplitude, while intensity scales describe damage levels at a location.
