 Earthquakes are when parts of the earth suddenly
break away from each other and move. This can
sometimes result in an earthquake or tsunamis.
Most scientists believe that the crust of the earth is
not a solid rock like the inside or core is. They
believe that there are plates in the ground that
suddenly break off and move with no warnings. The
plates are on top of what we call the mantle. They
are constantly moving all the time at a micro slow
rate. When two plates move away from each other
they create a volcano which is illustrated in the next
picture.

 We have lots of mass plates all over the world. We
call them Plate Tectonics. This picture will help
illustrate them for you.

 Plate tectonics are thought to be the reason for
the continents moving. After some time the
continents moved to be linked together like they are
know but before then they may been one whole
continent, this is what scientists call a pangaea.

 The continents seem to all fit together like a puzzle.
The Eastern coast of South America fits together
flawlessly on a map along with the Western coast of
Africa. If you slightly rotate North America and put it
together with Europe and Asia it fits together
perfectly. This coincidence is illustrated on the next
page.

 Volcanoes are another thing on Earth’s surface.
They are formed and triggered by plate movement.
Volcanoes are a big opening in the earth, like an
open wound is to your body. When we have an
earth quake the juice inside the volcano (called
magma) shoots out. The magma is a very hot liquid
in the earth. Its powers have destroyed towns and
cities. The magma rises because of the gasses that
are in it. The erupted magma is called lava and
when it cools it creates a certain rock. Eventually
the lava builds up and makes the volcano appear
very big.

 St. Pierre was a famous volcano eruption that
covered the hole ancient city during the 20th
century. This happened on May 8,1902. The
eruption happened slightly before 8:00 a.m.
completely covering the city and all living organisms
with it. Many died in the cathedral because they
where at morning mass for Ascension Day.
Ascensions Day was a newly formed Christian
Holiday. 29,000 residents where killed. Many of the
residents are preserved in the lava as rocks. They
are literally frozen in the act of hiding from the
volcano. There belongings are also preserved in
the hardened lava. Along with food as well.

 As you can know see volcanoes and earth quakes
can be very destructive. They have destroyed major
towns and cities. There impact and strength can be
astounding. The destruction they cause is
astonishing. They can also cause a lot more
damage then just themselves, often times other
natural disasters, like tsunamis, can happen after
them. Earth quakes for example changed the face
of the world, and they can be devastating.
