For centuries people settled in agricultural communities. Animal domestication and invention of improved tools led to food surpluses which allowed these communities some measure of control over the natural environment. Large supply of food led to increased populations. Larger populations led to more complex social relationships. This change from village life to city life was gradual, a slow process.
