The Borough Of Brentwood, England Be Considered A...
To what extent can the borough Of Brentwood, England Be Considered a Sustainable Community?
Subject Geography
Topic Sustainability
Introduction
Sustainability is currently a global concern. In recent years scientists have publicised theories that
the Earth will not be able to cope with the exponential growth of pollution and resource
consumption.
At present there are many examples of areas that have made their communities sustainable as a
result of the UN millennium goal. These goals stated...One example is Milagro. This is a community
in Arizona that has recently become sustainable. It is known for its cohousing community of twenty
eight, energy efficient, passive solar homes.
I have chosen to perform my tests in Brentwood as it is a developed, affluent area. As a result of
this its public transport networks are large, its resource consumption is high and its houses are
large. Further, Brentwood is an area that shows an even distribution of wealth, preventing
anomalies.
Research Question/ Hypothesis
The research question I have chosen to investigate is In what ways can we agree that the town of
Brentwood, England, is a sustainable area?
The hypothesis I will be trying to prove/disprove is Through the Sustainability Communities Index
it is apparent that Brentwood is a sustainable town .
The Sustainable Communities Index
The Sustainable Communities Index is a system of indicators for livable, equitable and prosperous
cities. It is

Carl Sandburg s Use of Allusion in Grass Essays
Carl Sandburg s Use of Allusion in Grass
Carl Sandburg s short poem Grass represents a metaphor for the disguise of history. The persona
tells how histories that have taken place are sooner or later disregarded. The persona tells that the
histories should not be disregarded, but be left the way it is as cited in the poem I am the grass
.Let me work. People should notice the events that took place and learn from their mistakes and be
better people. The places that are mentioned in the poem are allusions. The allusions are indirect
references that Carl Sandburg utilizes to exhibit the seriousness of the past events.
Every place that is mentioned in the poem is a well known bloody fight in wars that claimed many
lives. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At Austerlitz, even though Napoleon tasted his first victory he lost many men in the process.
Eventually his defeat at Waterloo obviously meant that he lost more men than in his victory. This
is where one of Carl s arguments of the poem comes into play. It is meaningless if one wins or
looses the reason being that the grass will get rid of all the signs of battles such as the dead people
and would have no effect whatsoever on people in the future.
The opening two lines of the following stanza is similar to the first line of the first stanza being that
the grass commands for more history left behind for it to wipe out at Gettysburg, Ypres, and
Verdun. All the grass wants to do is to accomplish its objective of wiping out physical signs of
history. However, these events are recent and so there may still be some visibility of the battles.
Some societies think that what happened hundreds of years ago happened yesterday. Carl then
uses the image of the passengers who pass the places mentioned in the poem now covered with
the grass. They ask the conductor What is this place? Where are we now? The passengers do not
have a clue as to how much blood had been dropped there in the stated places. They then carry on
with their voyage just as the grass keeps on growing.
While the grass covers all signs of history, it may also be pointed out that the allusions where
battles of war took place will be embraced by societies that see it as

Americans DID Land on the Moon
In the later days of May in 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced before a special joint
session of Congress, his ambitious goal of sending a human to the moon before the end of the
decade. However, this enormous goal, that would appear to be a catalyst for domestic pride, has as
many ties to the Cold War, as it does to the moonitself. Regardless of this, when Apollo 11landed on
the moon in July of 1969, the entire country rejoiced. While some doubted the motives of Kennedy
s goal, a bigger conspiracy may have lay just beneath the surface; a conspiracy that could have
shaken the entire country and enraged the world. Many well known scientists and government
officials claim that the United States of America never actually landed a man on the moon, and that
the government faked the entire event for both political and financial gain. Although much
compelling evidence and contradictions have been brought to light by the conspiracists, NASAhas
successfully responded to all of these in a robust and educated manor, that fully enforces the fact
that the United States of America did in fact land a man on the moon. The United States has
never been a country that shies away from a political advantage, and that is exactly one of the
many alleged motives for them to fake a moon landing. In the height of the Cold War tensions
could not have been higher between the two inter nation superpowers: the USA, and the USSR. As
seen in the so called Miracle on Ice and the World Chess

Electricity is the Main Factor in Producing Carbon Dioxide
I have chosen to pick the production of electricity because it is a main factor to producing carbon
dioxide. Throughout years it has increased the effect of carbon dioxide GLOBALLY.
a)Describe ONE source of excess carbon dioxide pollution and explain scientifically how it has
impacted the environment.``
On average the world us 39% electricity therefore, electricity consumption is an important portion
of a customer s environmental footprint, which leads to the production of Carbon Dioxide ( Co2) a
few ways production of electricity has affected the environment is: The main sources that generate
carbon dioxide are thermal powered stations where hydrocarbon fuel (gas, oil, and coal) are burned
to produce heat and steam to drive to the generators. Hydrocarbon fuel is what causes carbon
dioxide letting out chemicals that pollute the earth s environment.
Caron dioxide is also responsible for Global Warming. Global warming is a gradual temperature
rise of the planet s atmosphere. ( as said in paragraph one hydrocarbon fuel creates heat ) Most of
the light energy that comes from the sun is emitted in wavelengths shorter than 4,000 nanometers.
The heat energy produced from the earth, however, is released in wavelengths longer than 4,000
nanometers. Carbon dioxide doesn t absorb the energy from the sun, but it does absorb some of the
heat energy released from the earth causing global warming.

The United States Health Care System Essay
The United States health care system is lacking the needs to create a reliable system to achieve
quality, access, cost, and educate for the consumers. Despite the efforts of the government to find
a common ground to meet the standard for the societies, the system has yet to have a major
improvement. These issues must be reexamined to fix the broken system. The United States
health care expenditure is another issue that needs to be addressed to achieve the future goals of
the healthcare system in the United States. Healthcare societies will need to interact differently
by incorporating consumer s empowerment, technology, and education to meet the future goals
of the health care system. Also, the consumer must be highly educated on the purpose of
preventive care to lower the risk of chronic diseases which account for a lot health care spending.
The process of correcting the United States health care system will take time and effort from all
individual to achieve greatness. What is the perfect health care system and how to achieve that
system? Unfortunately, we will never achieve what is considered the perfect health care system
because we don t proceed perfection as the same. Some may believe that a blue sky with a hint of
sunlight is the perfect opportunity to embrace the use of Vitamin D, and others may believe it is
too hot to be out. So, again the healthcare system will never be perfect, but we can try to
incorporate all Americans with the decision making process.

How Bereavement has Affected Jerzy Essay
How Bereavement has Affected Jerzy
The death of a spouse has to be one of the most stressful changes you will ever experience. Your
spouse was probably the most important person in your life, possibly for many years. You may not
remember much of your single life before you were married; now you must live with the loss.
Jerzy has been through a lot with his wife, Word War Two, refugee status in three different
countries before settling down in England. When somebody dies after a long illness, the time which
leads up to death is often difficult for those who care for them. When you lose somebody as a

The reaction of a child dying by accident is: shock, anger and disbelief. Denial of what happened
is a natural defence and initially helps the traumatized system to cope. However, if the denial
persists, the bereaved person will supper from extreme anxiety and risks long term mental health
problems.

Even though it is a universal experience, most people do not like change. They have a limited
capacity to accept it. People actually fear change because it is a threat to their basic security
needs. Virtually all religions bring a deeper awareness of the meaning of life and most of them
offer a way of looking at death. Some religions stress that there is a continuing relationship of those
who die with those who live.

A Comparison of Two Paintings from the Renaissance Period
Introduction This paper will compare the themes found in the paintings Madonna and Child with
St. John the Baptist and an Angel by Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini (Puligo) and Madonna
Enthroned by Giotto. Both paintings deal with fables from the Christian faith but were executed
during different periods in art. The Giotto painting was created around 1310 and the Puglio painting
was executed between 1518 1520. Here, these two paintings have similar themes both at the
extreme beginnings and endings of the Italian Renaissance, and as such they serve to present an
exceptional example of the developments in art that occurred within that time. This paper shall

John the Baptist is also allowed to stand near the holy mother and child, and an angel is present.
Because of this, the viewer contends with a literal story rather than a simple image as in Madonna
Enthroned . Also in Puligo s image, where the central figures are larger and better seen, there are
religious symbols used. The same might be true in Giotto s work but the details are harder to
distinguish.
Visual Form and Style The style and the form of these two paintings reflect the development of
the artistic techniques during the Italian Renaissance. While both reflect a Biblical theme with a
central focal point of the Madonna and Child, Madonna Enthroned has a key image that is best
viewed from a central position and Madonna and Child... has a greater degree of importance
over the majority of the surface of the canvas. In Madonna and Child... the viewer does not
perceive that an image is being forced upon them as is found in the work by Giotto. A use of
light and space is also key to preventing the Puligo piece from being forced , where the
organization of distance visibly removes the viewer from Madonna Enthroned while drawing the
viewer into the painting in Madonna and Child... . Color also serves a similar purpose, where
Giotto s work is monochromatic but ocher while Puligo s work carries a greater expression
through the detail involved. The mood of these two pieces is remarkable in that color does not play

Totalitarian Government In George Orwell s Big Brother Is...
In 1984, Big Brother Is Watching You. One could not take two steps without bumping into a
poster of a stern looking man seeming to stare into the soul of the viewer. Big Brother acts as a
Godlike figure to the citizens of Oceania, a super nation constantly at war with the two super
nations. The government of Oceania, the Party, keeps citizens in a vice like grip through
constant surveillance and laws placed on every aspect of human existence. The only loyalty
allowed is to the Party. They control the past, the present, and the future through its command
over anything and everything. The government set up in 1984 directly reflects that of a
totalitarian government. Totalitarianism as it exists in George Orwell s 1984 exhibits key
features which bare striking resemblance to modern governments. The first feature of a
totalitarian government is unification against a dangerous enemy. The Party in 1984 uses The
Two Minutes Hate to give the people something or someone to be mad at. It is a ritual performed
by the members of the Outer Party, as pictures are displayed for the people to scream and curse
at. Its purpose is to strengthen the Party s position. If the people feel a lack of control over their
own lives, they are able to channel that into hate of the evil Emmanuel Goldstein and East and
Eurasia. During one of the rituals, Winston explains that although he had not originally felt the
same anger as the rest of the crowd, he could not help but find himself yelling along with

Immigrants In The Kite Runner
It was my father who taught us that an immigrant must work twice as hard as anybody else, that
he must never give up Zinedine zidane. Many people who have travelled abroad to another
country, for their own reason, have experienced the difficulty of adapting to a completely new life.
These people are called immigrants, such as, Amir and Baba, the characters in the novel, The Kite
Runner, written by Khaleo Hosseini. In the novel, as Kabul is being controlled by the Russian,
Amir and Baba had to flee to America and start their new immigrated life. As a successful
businessman in Kabul, Baba had to start from nothing when he flees to America. As immigrants in

Boulevard as an assistant at a gas station owned by an Afghan acquaintance he d started looking

gas, running the register, changing oil, and washing windshields (137 Hosseini). Baba worked

Baba sold his old items to earn money in the flea market. When Amir married, Baba paid for
Amir s wedding with his life savings. I also have the same experience. My part time job
experience also proves the validity of the saying. At my workplace, our manager adjusts our
salary according to our individual ability because he thinks people should be rewarded according
to their effort and ability. At the time when I first found my job, I received the lowest salary due
to my lack of work experience and my inability to solve problems independently. In order to earn
more money, I learned adequate skills from other employers. Day by day, I accumulated
experience and improved my ability in problem solving. I sweated and put in a lot of effort for
my job. Subsequently, I was rewarded when my manager raised my salary. In fact, there is a direct

Reflection On The Tampa Museum Of Art
For this project, I chose to go to the Tampa Museum of Art. I took my eleven year old daughter
Annabelle with me, she is an aspiring young artist who loves to paint and assemble collages.
This paper will describe the museum s activities and what was on exhibit. After which, I will
choose two works of art and do an in depth analysis on them. I will use the formal elements and the
principles of design to engage the artworks The Great Journey and A Group of Cubanswho left

I chose this particular painting for two reasons, one it validates why I chose the The Great
Journey and two, it also juxtaposes it. A Group of Cubans who left Manzanillo are Rescued at
Sea would be better understood with a contextual analysis. Knowing the history of the Cuban
people, their political, economic, and social issues would shed some light on why so many risk
their lives trying to make it to America. This painting is made for public viewing, to memorialize
and remind people of an actual real life incident that occurred back in August of 2014. KHCO
shows us Cuban survivors being pulled from the waters after being stranded at sea between Florida
and Cuba, many died trying to reach American soil. The red resembles blood in the water,
transforming feeling and ideas into a clear symbol of those lost while trying to flee their country.
The impression this painting left on me is the same as the one the sculpture did, this unfathomable
idea of living in such a place that would force me risk not only my life but the life of my children,

Csr And Its Usefulness For Modern Business
Many social scientists and economists like Friedman (1917 NYT article); Visser (2010) and
Karnani (2011) have been looking at the arguments for and against Corporate Social
Responsibility . There are many different definitions of CSR but the idea behind it is that
businesses contribute to the well being of society, as well as sustainable development by
delivering environmental, economic and social benefits to society, not just economic benefits
to the shareholders. Most writers have made slightly different cases against CSR and its
usefulness for modern business and society. One can see, even by looking at relevant case
studies, that there are certainly a large amount of flaws involved in the concept of CRS and
DWBD (Doing well by doing good), which I shall point out over the rest of this coursework. I
shall also consider the positive aspects of CSR, I will explore the critical writings off Karnani,
who claimed that in each case CSR is either irrelevant or ineffective, and compare those to other
notable criticisms such as Reich and Visser who all analyse various faults with the concept of
CSR. A problem that I came across early in my research and reading was that motives for
businesses to engage in CSR are very often not pure. Many businesses use CSR in order to claim
their social licence to operate. As the CSR activity often makes them seem legitimate and
responsible, it gives managers an opportunity to hide and disguise the activities of the corporation.

If you take spirituality further to holistic spirituality, the person is free to believe anything
constructed from any source material to create a personal blend to fit the personal wants and

Religion and spirituality, we can say, often compete against one another. Religion tries to maintain
all of it s ideologies consistent throughout land and time within communities, whereas, spirituality
can consist of many individuals with different beliefs and can still be personalized. We can say that
spirituality better serves individuals(Lundskow 2008). Although religion and spirituality can be
different, they can also both have individuality and collectivity. The community is the entity that
determines the religions being, whereas spirituality does not need any external measurement
because all is organized the individuals own needs. Religion makes an individual have to conform
to the basic structure of theology but they can still have some individuality. In turn, an individual
spirituality develops on their own terms but they can have a collective commitment with

Effects Of Stress On The Family
Stress has become a major epidemic for Americans. What is Stress? Stress is the state of mental or
emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances . The survey
results seem to tie in with what research shows, that 43 percent of all adults suffer adverse health
effects from stress. Given the potential healthcomplications related to stress, it is fair to say stress
certainly is a health problem in America. (APA, 2006)
This article discusses the effects of stress on the family and how stress affects children to parents
who are stressed. The survey mentions how stress is affecting all of Americans from the children to
the parents, challenges in practicing healthy behaviors. Americans busy life keeps them from
managing stress successfully. The need to educate adults about effective strategies in dealing with
stress. Parents may think that they are dealing with their stress well and hiding it from their
children but the key findings in the surveys performed prove otherwise. In the survey, 91% of
children reported they were aware that their parents were dealing with stress by observing distinct
behaviors such as arguing and yelling.
There was a considerable amount of surveys performed to determine how stress affects adults and
children in America either emotionally or physically. The first study findings discussed how stress
affects children whether normal weight and overweight. Per the key findings, it was determined
that overweight children are significantly affected by stress than children who are at a normal
weight. Survey shows that children who are overweight are roughly over 30% more stressed about
their weight and the dealings in their life than a child with a normal weight. Per the health
conditions stats, these children were affected physically, stating over 48% of overweight children
verses 33% of children with a normal weight have trouble falling asleep at night.
The next survey findings are of the causes of stress for American families and distinguishes the
difference between what is perception and reality when it relates to stress. It discusses a few of
the top sources of stress for the average single American, which is money ranking at 76%, work at

Government in Upper and Lower Canada
The need for government reform in Upper and Lower Canada was created because of the
incompetent way the government managed the country, a lack of representation in the government,
a lack of understanding of the colonist s in Upper and Lower Canada, and discrimination towards
the French in Lower Canada. Numerous colonists arrived to Upper and Lower Canadato begin a

needs. Firstly, the unskilled way the government ran Upper and Lower Canada upset the
colonists. This included a lack of land for the colonists, even though they were promised land
when they arrived in British North America. Settlers were unhappy about land distribution
particularly about the clergy and crown reserves and the land speculators that were part of the
Family Compact. Also, absentee landlords overpriced and tied up prime land. The settlers were
also unhappy that the building of roadways was hindered by the clergy and crown reserves. The
colonists were unhappy with the government and the colonists complained loudly about land and
roads. Most knew that the Family Compact was to blame and they did not disguise their anger (Pg.

problem because they completely ignored the colonist s complaints and they did not do anything to

Abstinence-Only Proposal Essay
The foundation of the abstinence only policy was laid in 1981 under President Regan when the
United States Congress passed the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) administered by the

The role of educating students about the importance of healthy sexual relationships has fallen hard
and fast on public schools. School aged boys and girls are not receiving information from their
parents on what decisions they should make in regards to sex. Parents are finding this topic of
conversation too taboo to breach and as a result, students are getting what little information they are
receiving from school. Less then half of school aged adolescents talk to their parents about sex and
abstinence (Smith, 2005). The philosophy behind abstinence only policy implies that the greatest
risk of informing students about their options for contraception would be that educators are
condoning premarital sex. The risks that our students are already taking, however, are greater then
policymakers are considering. It is generally accepted that the majority of sexual intercourse among
young people remains unprotected (Westwood, 2006). Abstinence only curriculum is not
preventing adolescents from having sex; it is just making them naГЇve to the risks they are taking
with their lifestyle choices.
There is a continuing increase in the rates of sexually transmitted infections, particularly in people
ages 15 25 (Westwood, 2006). Twelve million new cases of

Home Along A Busy Road
What appears to be just another white two story home along a busy road, is a lot more than it
looks. If you slow down and take a closer look, you notice a public parking lot as well as an open
sign in the window. This is not a residence but Wilmington s Oddity / Antique store. On the
corner of Marsh and Sherwood Roads, this house is coated in wonderful shade of mature trees
that line the streets as well as the whole neighborhood. Upon closer examination, you notice this

The owners have tried to find an explanation but to no avail. Could this have anything to do with
the two women that died from lung disease and the spirits are causing guests to feel the pain they
felt right before they died? Shadow figures seem to roam the premises and have been witnessed
by patrons and renters alike mainly in the front and rear gallery. In recent years many customers
have said they have witnessed a shadow moving behind the coffin that lies on display in one of
the show rooms. The same shadows have been seen in other rooms, in some instances, it takes
the shape of a human figure. When Ken was alerted to this phenomena, it brought back
memories of when he was a child and his uncle would take trips out of town. Ken s job as a
young boy was to enter his uncle s home and turn on a couple of lights before darkness fell. In the
morning, Ken would run back across the street and turn off the lights. The following night, he
would turn on different lights. This gave the impression that someone was home during the night
time hours. Ken s memory of turning on the lights one evening lead to him recalling a time when
he was almost at his home when he glanced back to the house, and in total horror, he witnessed a
person standing in the upstairs bedroom window. This shock him to the core as he thought there
was a stranger in the house while he turned on lights. He told his parents who later told him

Intellectual Humility And The Education World
Intellectual Humility in the Education World Every teacher has their own bias. The people who
write state standards and state tests also have biases. Students are biased on what they think they
need to pay attention to in class. Teachers, state governments and students each believe that they
know what is most important in their separate fields. None of these groups like to be told that
they are teaching, writing, or learning wrong. However, it is still necessary for people to remain
open to criticism because criticism may lead to an improvement down the road. But each group
needs another group to be able to call them out on these issues. This is called staying humble.
Intellectual humility is admitting to not knowing everything in a field of interest but still being
willing to accept criticism in order to further knowledge of a subject and become more capable of
doing a job better than before. Intellectual humility is combination of two things: common sense
and critical thinking. Common sense is a characteristic that people sneer at. Speaking from
experience, humans are prone to not listening to advice and doing what they think it is the best
option. When peers and teachers start listing off x, y, and z reasons for why what they are doing is
a bad idea, people without common sense will refuse to listen. Common sense requires us to look at
the big picture and think carefully through all the possible options and go with the option that is
most reasonable. This

Stuart Mill Individuality
Introduction
John Stuart Mill (1806 1873) is recognised as one of the most prolific thinkers of the nineteenth
century, whose liberal political philosophy has influenced intellectuals and political theorists for
decades (Feinberg, 1986). At the same time, Mill s utilitarian approach to society at large reveals
sensibilities and moral considerations that enhance his liberal attitudes in the most surprising ways.
According to Losurdo (2011), it is widely believed that Mill is one of the greatest opponents of
paternalism, supporting individuals liberty and autonomy. However, Mill is also accused of overt
sentiment, ignorance of natural rights, or a diversion from original conceptions of Utilitarianism. As
a result, this essay is concerned with his conception of individuality, as discussed in his On Liberty
(1859), investigating how this notion, based on individual liberty and autonomy, opposes social
control and paternalistic policies.
On the one hand, the essay looks at the ideal of individuality, and its values outside of state ... Show

However, is this political approach immune to social desires to regulate and guard all citizens?
This work explores such tensions between freedom and liberty, and enforced state control, assessing
Mill s liberal utilitarian politics, and their impact on individual lives.
Thesis Statement
This essay argues that John Stuart Mill s On Liberty presents a strong case for individuality of
citizens, challenging the role of paternalism through autonomous social progress and utilitarian
values. On the other hand, it is shown that Mill s arguments against public regulations are very
narrow, and his own ideas frequently adhere to paternalism, thus creating a weak defence against
state control politics.

Our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence and served the people from their states

Part of the act was rewritten making soldiers no longer subject to legal prosecution under United
States law for what, before the amendment, was defined as a war crime, such as torture (Wikipedia).
The Patriot Act in 2010 added criminalization of pure speech in furtherance of the non criminal
acts of terrorist groups (How 9 11 changed the Law, Privacy, Profiling and Free Speech, 2011.
The coercion and torturing captured terrorist is needed to protect national security in the war
against terrorism. There are numerous justifications why the coercion or torture of terrorist is
normally a lesser evil than the preventable mass murder of innocent victims (Slater, Summer 2006).
With all the new legislation and measures need for the protection of the American people does
this mean we are going to become as barbaric as a foreign country? Do we really need to torture
people until they are willing to give up information? Do we need to spy on our own people? As
with any additional legislation it gives the government a broader chance of spying on its people
and taking away a right to privacy. Slowly the people s rights are being replaced with the
government s need to control.

Trifles In Susan Glaspell s A Jury Of Her Peers
A Jury of Her Peers, a short story written by Susan Glaspell in 1917, is an example of early
feminist literature. The female characters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, are able to solve the
mystery of who murdered John Wright while their male counterparts could not. This short story
had been adapted from Glaspell s one act play Trifles written the previous year. The play consists
of the same characters and plot line as the story. In both works, Glaspell depicts how the men,
Sheriff Peters, Mr. Hale, and County Attorney, disregard the most important area in the house, the
kitchen, when it comes to their investigation. In the end, the women are the ones who find the
clues that lead to the conclusion that Minnie Wright, John Wright s wife, murdered him. Both of
Glaspell s female characters illustrate the ability to step into a male dominated profession by
taking on the role of detective. According to Critical Theory Today: A User Friendly Guide
written by Lois Tyson, a reader response critique focuses on an individual s response to a literary
text. Reader response criticismmaintains that what a text is cannot be separated from what it does
(Tyson 170). There are several different approaches to reader response theory that I would be
applying, such as transactional reader response theory and affective stylistics. Firstly, transactional
reader response theory analyzes the transaction between text and reader in which the text stimulates

Anthropogenic Noise Pollution And Its Effects On Cetaceans
Anthropogenic Noise Pollution and Its Effects on Cetaceans
Cetaceans use sound extensively in both communication, hunting, and navigation. However as
humanity continues to make use of the ocean we are constantly filling it with equipment that
produces high amounts of sound. These devices are starting to have an impact on cetaceans
worldwide, from mass strandings often linked to military exercises to area denials caused by busy
commercial shipping lanes and seismic surveys. If consideration is not taken towards this problem
now it could develop into something that could have degrading effects on cetacean populations in
the future. Sound waves are nothing more than an energy transfer through a medium be it through
a liquid, solid, or a gas. Sound pressure or intensity is measured on logarithmic scale in decibels
dB which increases on an order of magnitude. For instance a quiet conversation would be around
30 dB and whereas the human pain threshold would be just over 100 dB. While the pitch or
frequency of the sound is measured in hertz or Hz, the higher the hertz the higher the pitch of the
sound and vice versa (Hildebrand, 2004).
Anthropologic noise pollution can come from many different sources, some of the more common
ones are commercial shipping, acoustic deterrent devices, military sonar, and explosives (used in
some seismic surveys for oil and gas as well as military exercises). The main focus will be on
military sonar use, seismic surveys, and acoustic deterrent

Pakistan Is A Complex Country
Pakistan is a complex country, both because of harsh physical terrain and because of a historical
unpredictable government. Pakistan is constantly in the news, and a topic of discussion in The
United States. Many of the fighters the American forces are fighting in Afghanistan come from
Pakistan, or at least find a safe haven in the mountains of western Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan is
a nuclear armed country that has a shaky government at best. I find it fascinating that a country
that has a government with such a sporadic history filled with attempts to overthrow it and coups
maintain a nuclear arsenal. How was this possible? I know that the United States and its allies put
much effort into keeping countries such as Iran and North Korea from attaining nuclear weapons.
What was going on during the development of Pakistan s nuclear program? While Pakistan is an
ally of the United States, in the region that Pakistan is located that could change quickly. In
addition, I feel that you must prove that you are a stable country and society before you are
permitted to possess such powerful weapons. Pakistan provides a very interesting topic of
discussion that some people may not be aware. The two reasons listed above are the main reason I
chose to write about Pakistan, knowing little else about the country, but through my research, I
found that there is more to Pakistan than just those two areas, beginning with how the country
initially formed. Pakistan formed on

Why Is It Important To Read To Children
To Read to Children or Not to Read to Children
Over the years as many things in the world have changed there has been one favored child parent
bonding activity that has stuck around through all the changes which is known as parents reading
to their children. According to Kun Hung Cheng and Chin Chung Tsai, an idea offered by Fletcher
and Reese, 2005 that the three modules of a parent, children, and picture book provide the
foundations for practicing effective picture book reading indicates the significant role parents play
in their children s reading (203). In a study which included two groups of parents and their

Some parents may say they are too busy with their daily activities and do not have the time
necessary to read to their children. Although that may have been a valid excuse in the past, today,
a Lot of children s books are available for free through online music stores such as iTunes or
Google play. Why not consider getting one to read to them during the next outing? Not only will
doing this likely help keep them occupied, but it will also likely encourage them to (a) read books
themselves and (b) possess a more extensive imagination essentially enabling them to make up and
tell their own stories thus enabling them to entertain themselves in a vast majority of uninteresting
environments or situations.
Other parents may say they travel too often for work and are never home enough to read to their
children. A suggestion for these parents would be to record themselves reading the book during
the day and then have someone else (such as a grandparent, babysitter, or whoever is staying
with him or her while they are away) play it back for them in the evening before they go to bed. A
father on Youtube did this for his daughter so they could still have their nightly reading time while
he was away on work related business. Additionally, a few parents may say their children are not

Summary Of Birth Order Theory
This study was conducted to support Alfred Alder s birth order theory in regards to personality
characteristics. The hypothesis that first born children are more responsible, successful, and
obedient than their younger siblings, while last born children are more manipulative, outgoing
and rebellious were supported by these results. These findings are similar to Paulhus, Trapnell,
Chen (1999) study, results of the study indicated firstborns were nominated by their siblings as
most conscientious as well as most achieving and later born children were more frequently
nominated as most liberal, agreeable, and rebellious. Another study supporting the hypothesis is a
study conducted by Zweigenhaft and Von Ammon (2000). In the study it was hypothesized that
later born children were more rebellious then firstborns. To do this they examined the birth order
of a group of U.S. college students who had been arrested for engaging in civil disobedience in a
labor dispute. Later born children were more likely than firstborns to have been arrested. This
provides evidence that later born children are more likely than firstborns to be rebellious.... Show

risk for Down Syndrome is 1:267, whereas her risk for any chromosomal abnormality at this age

266:267 and not having any chromosomal abnormality as 147:148. How does this compare to the
risk of diagnostic testing? At 11 weeks, her risks of pregnancyloss from invasive testing are greater
than those of finding the anomaly. Non invasive testing, such as Nuchal fold testing and Beta hCG

Contributions of Psychology to the Juvenile Justice System
INTRODUCTION The contributions of psychology to the juvenile justice system are important and
growing. In assembling this Handbook, however, our primary goal was not simply to overview
most of these contributions. Rather, we approach this topic with the view that psychology s most
important contributions to juvenile justice are interdisciplinary and empirical. One cannot expect to
make meaningful contributions to our legal system without recognizing the nature and structure of
applicable law. Within that context, however, are questions about why and how frequently
adolescents become involved in offending, how long they continue, what influences serve as risk
and protective factors, how such adolescents might be assessed and rehabilitated in relevant and
effective ways, and how important information about human development, assessment, and
intervention might best be conveyed to juvenile justice professionals. Many of these questions are
clearly interdisciplinary in scope. This Handbook provides relevant information from different
specializations within psychology, including clinical, developmental, educational, family, forensic,
and social. But it also includes perspectives from other behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology,
criminology), natural sciences (biology) and mental health professions (e.g., psychiatry, social
work) in the attempt to identify the most important sources of information to address the major
questions on which we focus. These questions are also

Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs And Quality Of Experience
Review of an article on learning theory: Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs and Quality of
Experience In Learning INTRODUCTION Learning Theory In education and psychology, learning
is generally defined as a practice that collectively brings together emotional, cognitive and
environmental influences as well as earlier experiences for obtaining, improving, or even making
changes in someone s knowledge, values, skills and also world views (Fisher, 2005). Learning is a
process that mostly focuses on what occurs when learning happens. The explanation of what
happens is distinctively illustrated in the learning theories. A learning theory is formulated as an
attempt to describe how human beings and animals learn. This helps to understand the
fundamentally complex process of learning. These learning theories comprise of two important
values (Fisher, 2005). The first one is in providing terms and a conceptual outline for deducing the
examples of learning that are observed. The other value is important when suggesting where and
how to look for solutions for practical problems. The theories may not give the desired solutions,
but they direct people s attention to the variables that are essential when finding solutions,
(Hergenhahn, 2005). Learning theory is therefore, an abstract framework telling how information is
absorbed in the brain, how it is processed and retained during learning activities. It involves
cognitive, environmental, emotional influences and prior experiences are all

Rock And Roll Outline
a.What is rock and roll?
i.Rock and roll music began developing in the 1950s and still continues to grow today. This is a
type of music that almost everybody in the world is somewhat familiar with due to how popular
and successful rock and roll has become. Today, rock and roll represents almost one third of the
U.S. market and more than twice the market share of the second place rap/hip hop. (online book,
cite). One of many reasons rock and roll grew to be so infectious is because of its acceptance of all
people no matter their race, gender, style, etc. This genre has several sub genres that have
branched off from the original rock and roll style, all of which contributed to making rock and roll
so contagious.

Due to lack of rightful accreditation back in the 1950s, Helen Kolawole expresses her opinion
about how the entertainment industry should finally be upfront about the originations of
several hit songs that credited white artists instead of the originators who were black. For
example, Elvis Presley is a well respected legend who was known as the king of rock and roll. Due
to Elvis being so successful in his career, the issue of several songs recorded by him, originally
being written by black artists, arises and irritates people of the African American race. It is
prejudiced that this white God is forever remembered as one of the biggest stars in history when
his success was partly based off of black artists who continue to be unrecognized. It is fair to say
that several white artists are better known for their success over black artists. Helen Kolowale

Mini Trucking and its Effect on Society
The vehicle code handbook states that any modification done to a vehicle to alter it from its original
state violates the law. That single sentence has created more problems for custom vehicle owners
than can be imagined. Yet, at the same time, it has generated massive amountsof money for the
state of California. Modifying one s vehicle sets it apart from others and makes a statement about
the owner s individuality. Over the past decade, hacking up a vehicle, putting a trick paint job on it,

There are councils for car and truck clubs so the sport stays organized. Police are hired to keep
these vehicles off of the road. When a cop pulls a mini truck over, it s usually because of it being
too low, or having the stereo system up to loud. But when looking over the vehicle a dozen other
violations become apparent. A few of these violations are: no door handles, no windshield wipers, a
tinted windshield, frame modifications, or a after market steering wheel. Yet, despite all of the
repercussions that may come from altering a vehicle, it is the sheer enjoyment of creativity that
gathers so many fans to the sport.
People are always trying to come up with new ways to express their creativity through their
vehicles. Different body or frame modifications can be seen at every truck show, in the parking
lot at the mall, or even driving by on the freeway. Every color imaginable has been painted on the
metal canvas of every type of vehicle on the road today. Some even have multiple colors in
various images displayed on the hoods, sides and tailgates. One of the most popular images of the

and unwanted attention to the driver and to the vehicle. Imagine this scenario: a mini truck with

period of 1988 to 1990, Jonathan Kozol visited various public schools in multiple neighborhoods,

In fear of the deteriorating value of education materials to support the appropriate grade levels,
white families flee the public school system to magnet or private school for higher enrichment.
Meanwhile, suburban legislators and Governor Thompson agree that we can t keep throwing
money into a black hole (Kozol, 1988, p. 53). Ultimately, the education at public schools were
thrown aside at the cost of enriching the lives of students in affluent schools. Within the two
districts I researched, Dallas ISD and Highland Park ISD, I found that the gathered median
income from Highland Park is four times that of Dallas ISD. Because of this, Dallas ISD
students are forced to rely on the limited sources of educational materials which are reflected by
the substantially different median income compared to Highland ISD. Additionally, racial divide
amongst the two ISD s is astonishing. In Dallas ISD s only 5.1% of the student body is identified
as white but Highland Park is 85.8%. Meanwhile, the other ethnicities for the two school districts
have the percentages swapped. Having Highland ISD s black, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific
ethnicities just below the 15% margin and Dallas ISD s non white ethnicities soaring above 94%,
the clear distinction of racial inequality among these two districts are evident. Comparing these
percentages aligns to Kozol s evaluation of white overpopulation in affluent schools within different
districts such as Highland ISD.

constant proof of proficiency. For instance, one goes to the primary care, the first question when
they notice you have a Hispanic last name and speak with an accent, do you understand English?
Other times, they would speak slowly as if the patient was two year old. e.g., h o w ol d are
you? If one is lucky, he/she will have a bilingual physician who pretends that his/her Spanish has
faded away. Another place where this test is taken is in Manhattan Corporate buildings (e.g., one
enters the building and says, I would like to go to the XY Company . The door man or clerk at
the security desk would say OK, give me your ID , right at the moment security person sees your
last name, you are a dummy to them. Again, the security person would guide you in slow motion
pointing out every single step to the elevator, the instructs you to press the 8th floor written in the
address slip you handed to them.

Blanche Dubois Extract
Throughout the extract and elsewhere in the play, Tennessee Williams presents Blanche as
someone who has suffered, and will be purified as a result. The extract is from Scene 11, the last
scene of A Streetcar Named Desire, and occurs some weeks after scenes 7 10, which take place on
September 15, Blanche DuBoiss birthday. One can argue some weeks could be six weeks or so,
and that the scene of the extract occurs in the largely Franco Spanish Catholic city of New
Orleans is in November, All Souls Day. On this feast, Roman Catholics pray for the resurrection of
those suffering in Purgatory, where souls destined for heaven are purified of all sin and
imperfection. The evidence for this conclusion can be found in both the extract and the... Show

Despite this Williams presents Blanche as first being sent to purgatory, symbolised in the
psychiatric hospital , the pre modified noun phrase referring to a place where mental illness is
treated, this acting as a symbolism to the halfway house between the heaven of lucidity and the hell
of insanity, the renewed life of the mind and the final death of the spirit. Williams presents this
through symbolism that Blanche will be cleansed of her sins in purgatory, particularly the sin which
she herself admits and laments of denying her homosexual husband It was because on the dance
floor unable to stop myself I d suddenly said I saw! I know! You disgust me... the conjunction

compassionately she lashed out which she believes led to Allan s committing suicide. This

Neutral Subscale Research
To properly understand the research question frame, we must explore the instrument in general and
the methodological critiques that led to the short form used in this study. Also of note is the
research focusing solely on the masculine and feminine subscales to the exclusion of the social
desirability scale. We will briefly explore specific BSRI applications with respect to variables other
than gender(e.g. race ethnicity). We will proceed with a literature review specifically focused on
neutral subscale research and use.
BSRI Development Background and the Social Desirability Scale Bem (1974) developed the Bem
Sex Role Inventory to measure three constructs: Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny. The
original form consisted of 60 items divided into three subscales that measured a person s
masculinity, femininity, and a social desirability scale. The social desirability scale items were
judged as neutral and statistically shown not to load on either masculinity or ... Show more content

Twenge (1997) suggested that scores on the masculine subscale, and the feminine subscale to a
lesser degree, have rose over time with respect to gender. The rise was attributed to effects from
culture and environmental factors leading women to identify with more masculine personality
traits (Twenge, 1997). Auster and Ohm (2000) explored the measures in a contemporary American
setting to assess score validity since the original BSRI was introduced 25 years earlier. The
findings suggested that there was little change in validity for feminine scores but a significant
change in the masculine constructs between the 1972 population and the 1999 population.
Additionally, in the intervening 25 years, mean scores for masculine items rose while mean scores
for feminine items fell (Auster Ohm, 2000). As with most BSRI studies, scores were provided for
the masculine and feminine items, yet social desirability scores were

Unorthodox Of Women In Jane Eyre
Women have a long history of being considered idle objects rather than humans with souls.
Victorian society is exemplary of the objectivity women endure in a world ruled by patriarchs. An
ideal Victorian woman is expected to be beautiful and reserved. Educated in roles that pertain to
femininity, a Victorian woman is bred for a life of domesticity to accompany her role of
inferiority. The ultimate achievement of an ideal Victorian woman is to marry a man that can
provide her with financial security. Charlotte Bronte introduces Jane Eyre, a young woman who
struggles to reconcile the unorthodox side of herself and the Victorian side. As a girl, Jane Eyre is
ridiculed for her lower class status and her plainness; however, she is adamant about seeking
fairness and using her mature intellect to combat the injustice brought upon her. Young Jane
expresses her opinions whether it s blatant and explicative, or reserved and Victorian, which is a
quality she carries into adulthood. During her adolescence, Jane easily succumbs to the unorthodox
side of her persona and betrays societal norms; however, her maturation into womanhood and her
relationship with Rochester provokes her ability to fulfill Victorian expectation.
Jane s relationship with the Reeds exemplifies her unorthodox persona during the Victorian era. The
Reeds are a wealthy family who despise Jane s existence. Mrs. Reed and her son John use their
status to assert their authority and justify the abuse and neglect they

Beyond The Things They Carried
Beyond the Things They Carried
The Vietnam War began in 1954, consisting of many extensive, horrific years of battle that seemed
to create more harm to the United States and its soldiers rather than to North Vietnam. The 500,000
United States military personnel returned home with the loss of the war and the loss of their
friends on their minds. Although the physical and emotional experiences that the men went through
is unfathomable, Tim O Brien does a great job portraying what life as a soldier was truly like in the
Vietnam War. In the book The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien depicts the unstable emotional
and psychological condition of the American soldiers through the symbolism of their belongings
and personal anecdotes from their lives. The book opens with Tim O Brien listing items that the
soldiers needed to carry with them for life in Vietnam, such as a P 38 can opener, mosquito
repellent, C rations, dog tags, and many more necessities, weighing around twelve to eighteen
pounds in total. Many men also had the added weight of weapons needed for combat, which then
added another five to twenty six pounds depending on what weapon and the amount of ammunition
necessary. On average, most men carried around thirty pounds, but the load was much higher when
considering the emotional and psychological weight put on their shoulders from the impact of
these items. Early on in the book Tim O Brien states, They carried all they could bear, and then
some, including a silent

Materials Camp Personal Statement
I would like to attend Materials Camp to learn more about the subjects that I am passionate
about. As far back as I can remember, I have loved science and technology. My two favorite areas
of science are Geology and Agriculture. Because I was motivated to learn more about these
subjects, I researched and sought out professors in these fields to learn more outside of school. In
school, I enjoy math, science(Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Biology), and computer classes. I love
learningmore about anything in the STEM field and enjoy meeting and learning from people who
work in all fields of STEM.
Through my involvement in 4 H, I have been given the opportunity to study geology and compete
in geology educational displays at my county fair and state fair. I enjoy going into grade schools
and teaching students the basics of geology and finding ways ... Show more content on

Role Of Weather In The Great Gatsby
It s More Than Just Rain or Snow In reality the weather and environment play a part in how
people interact with one another and in some cases it can even influence a person s mood.
Therefore, weather also plays a similar role in literature as it does in reality. The only difference is
that in literature the significance of weatherimpacts the story more and has much sub contextual
meaning than what is just portrayed on the surface level. Within different stories different types
of weather can symbolize different things. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald,
Fitzgerald uses fog to serve as a symbol for Gatsby s and Daisy s relationship. His choice for
using fog as a symbol of their relationship is because it obscures Gatsby s vision of the green light
on Daisy s house which, for Gatsby, it acts as a beacon letting him know where Daisy is. Also, it
acts as a method of foreshadowment. Realistically, fog obscures one s vision and it renders the
viewer blind to what s around them due to the fact that the fog encapsulates the person in a visual
area that is generally only immediately in front of you. For example, the purpose of a lighthouse is

In The Great Gatsby, in response to Gatsby comment about the mist and the light, Nick states,
Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished
forever (93). With that the audience (and Gatsby) realize that everything he had worked for to
make sure he could see Daisy was thwarted simply by fog. And if it wasn t for the fact that Daisy
was right next to him he d have no idea what s going with her or what she was up to. The light on
her dock acts as his beacon that is suppose to help guide him to her, but even that fails in the end,
as Nick says, ...[T]he colossal significance of that light had now vanished

Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles is one of the key persons who are responsible to the founding of
modern Singapore. He played an important role in forming a British Settlement, Singapore, in the
Melaka straits despite facing rejections, such as Dutch or even resistance in London itself. He is
a controversial person even in his time. Hence there is no doubt that there are lots of information
about him and founding of Singapore in the internet. However, how do we assess these websites
for its appropriateness towards scholarly research is the main objective of this essay. According to
The Sheridan Libraries an appropriate source for scholarly research would have information such as
authorship, publishing body, point of view, referral to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just take an example, ...Raffles became a subject of controversy and a target of attack, from
British as well as Dutch adversaries. To some, Raffles was an admired reformer, who wanted to
abolish the slave trade, and ameliorate the lot of the people. To others, he was simply a young
and ambitious schemer. This paragraph gives me a feeling that he is a controversial figure even
during his time. The word ambitious schemer also reflects that he may not be as pure as a saint.
All these that I have mentioned, didn t come to me when I was reading the source from
Wikipedia. With these, in certain account, there is a different in objectivity of the author of these
two sources. Besides that, it was Farquhar who worked alongside the Malay rulers for four years
to secure the survival and growth of the British settlement on Singapore Island... gives a general
account on what Farquhar had contributed to the development of Singapore. This just gives me
an impression of what Singapore was at that time, and it was definitely not the sole contribution
and hard work of Raffles. The source did mention an outline of the life of Raffles. The author did
give a high regards on Raffles effort to abolish slavery. This can be showed He held strongly to
moral principles on the dignity and equality of human beings... . Besides that, the source also
mentions two important names in the founding of Singapore, William

  • 2. The Borough Of Brentwood, England Be Considered A... To what extent can the borough Of Brentwood, England Be Considered a Sustainable Community? Subject Geography Topic Sustainability Introduction Sustainability is currently a global concern. In recent years scientists have publicised theories that the Earth will not be able to cope with the exponential growth of pollution and resource consumption. At present there are many examples of areas that have made their communities sustainable as a result of the UN millennium goal. These goals stated...One example is Milagro. This is a community in Arizona that has recently become sustainable. It is known for its cohousing community of twenty eight, energy efficient, passive solar homes. I have chosen to perform my tests in Brentwood as it is a developed, affluent area. As a result of this its public transport networks are large, its resource consumption is high and its houses are large. Further, Brentwood is an area that shows an even distribution of wealth, preventing anomalies. Research Question/ Hypothesis The research question I have chosen to investigate is In what ways can we agree that the town of Brentwood, England, is a sustainable area? The hypothesis I will be trying to prove/disprove is Through the Sustainability Communities Index it is apparent that Brentwood is a sustainable town . The Sustainable Communities Index The Sustainable Communities Index is a system of indicators for livable, equitable and prosperous cities. It is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The persona tells how histories that have taken place are sooner or later disregarded. The persona tells that the histories should not be disregarded, but be left the way it is as cited in the poem I am the grass .Let me work. People should notice the events that took place and learn from their mistakes and be better people. The places that are mentioned in the poem are allusions. The allusions are indirect references that Carl Sandburg utilizes to exhibit the seriousness of the past events. At Austerlitz, even though Napoleon tasted his first victory he lost many men in the process. Eventually his defeat at Waterloo obviously meant that he lost more men than in his victory. This is where one of Carl s arguments of the poem comes into play. It is meaningless if one wins or looses the reason being that the grass will get rid of all the signs of battles such as the dead people and would have no effect whatsoever on people in the future. The opening two lines of the following stanza is similar to the first line of the first stanza being that the grass commands for more history left behind for it to wipe out at Gettysburg, Ypres, and Verdun. All the grass wants to do is to accomplish its objective of wiping out physical signs of history. However, these events are recent and so there may still be some visibility of the battles. Some societies think that what happened hundreds of years ago happened yesterday. Carl then uses the image of the passengers who pass the places mentioned in the poem now covered with the grass. They ask the conductor What is this place? Where are we now? The passengers do not have a clue as to how much blood had been dropped there in the stated places. They then carry on with their voyage just as the grass keeps on growing. While the grass covers all signs of history, it may also be pointed out that the allusions where battles of war took place will be embraced by societies that see it as ... • 4. Americans DID Land on the Moon In the later days of May in 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced before a special joint session of Congress, his ambitious goal of sending a human to the moon before the end of the decade. However, this enormous goal, that would appear to be a catalyst for domestic pride, has as many ties to the Cold War, as it does to the moonitself. Regardless of this, when Apollo 11landed on the moon in July of 1969, the entire country rejoiced. While some doubted the motives of Kennedy s goal, a bigger conspiracy may have lay just beneath the surface; a conspiracy that could have shaken the entire country and enraged the world. Many well known scientists and government officials claim that the United States of America never actually landed a man on the moon, and that the government faked the entire event for both political and financial gain. Although much compelling evidence and contradictions have been brought to light by the conspiracists, NASAhas successfully responded to all of these in a robust and educated manor, that fully enforces the fact that the United States of America did in fact land a man on the moon. The United States has never been a country that shies away from a political advantage, and that is exactly one of the many alleged motives for them to fake a moon landing. In the height of the Cold War tensions could not have been higher between the two inter nation superpowers: the USA, and the USSR. As seen in the so called Miracle on Ice and the World Chess ... Hydrocarbon fuel is what causes carbon dioxide letting out chemicals that pollute the earth s environment. Caron dioxide is also responsible for Global Warming. Global warming is a gradual temperature rise of the planet s atmosphere. The heat energy produced from the earth, however, is released in wavelengths longer than 4,000 nanometers. The United States Health Care System Essay The United States health care system is lacking the needs to create a reliable system to achieve quality, access, cost, and educate for the consumers. Despite the efforts of the government to find a common ground to meet the standard for the societies, the system has yet to have a major improvement. These issues must be reexamined to fix the broken system. The United States health care expenditure is another issue that needs to be addressed to achieve the future goals of the healthcare system in the United States. Healthcare societies will need to interact differently by incorporating consumer s empowerment, technology, and education to meet the future goals of the health care system. Also, the consumer must be highly educated on the purpose of preventive care to lower the risk of chronic diseases which account for a lot health care spending. The process of correcting the United States health care system will take time and effort from all individual to achieve greatness. What is the perfect health care system and how to achieve that system? Unfortunately, we will never achieve what is considered the perfect health care system because we don t proceed perfection as the same. Some may believe that a blue sky with a hint of sunlight is the perfect opportunity to embrace the use of Vitamin D, and others may believe it is too hot to be out. A Comparison of Two Paintings from the Renaissance Period Introduction This paper will compare the themes found in the paintings Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist and an Angel by Domenico di Bartolomeo Ubaldini (Puligo) and Madonna Enthroned by Giotto. Both paintings deal with fables from the Christian faith but were executed during different periods in art. The Giotto painting was created around 1310 and the Puglio painting was executed between 1518 1520. Here, these two paintings have similar themes both at the extreme beginnings and endings of the Italian Renaissance, and as such they serve to present an exceptional example of the developments in art that occurred within that time. Because of this, the viewer contends with a literal story rather than a simple image as in Madonna Enthroned . Also in Puligo s image, where the central figures are larger and better seen, there are religious symbols used. The same might be true in Giotto s work but the details are harder to distinguish. Visual Form and Style The style and the form of these two paintings reflect the development of the artistic techniques during the Italian Renaissance. One could not take two steps without bumping into a poster of a stern looking man seeming to stare into the soul of the viewer. Big Brother acts as a Godlike figure to the citizens of Oceania, a super nation constantly at war with the two super nations. The government of Oceania, the Party, keeps citizens in a vice like grip through constant surveillance and laws placed on every aspect of human existence. The only loyalty allowed is to the Party. They control the past, the present, and the future through its command over anything and everything. The government set up in 1984 directly reflects that of a totalitarian government. Totalitarianism as it exists in George Orwell s 1984 exhibits key features which bare striking resemblance to modern governments. The first feature of a totalitarian government is unification against a dangerous enemy. The Party in 1984 uses The Two Minutes Hate to give the people something or someone to be mad at. It is a ritual performed by the members of the Outer Party, as pictures are displayed for the people to scream and curse at. Its purpose is to strengthen the Party s position. If the people feel a lack of control over their own lives, they are able to channel that into hate of the evil Emmanuel Goldstein and East and Eurasia. Csr And Its Usefulness For Modern Business Many social scientists and economists like Friedman (1917 NYT article); Visser (2010) and Karnani (2011) have been looking at the arguments for and against Corporate Social Responsibility . There are many different definitions of CSR but the idea behind it is that businesses contribute to the well being of society, as well as sustainable development by delivering environmental, economic and social benefits to society, not just economic benefits to the shareholders. Most writers have made slightly different cases against CSR and its usefulness for modern business and society. One can see, even by looking at relevant case studies, that there are certainly a large amount of flaws involved in the concept of CRS and DWBD (Doing well by doing good), which I shall point out over the rest of this coursework. I shall also consider the positive aspects of CSR, I will explore the critical writings off Karnani, who claimed that in each case CSR is either irrelevant or ineffective, and compare those to other notable criticisms such as Reich and Visser who all analyse various faults with the concept of CSR. A problem that I came across early in my research and reading was that motives for businesses to engage in CSR are very often not pure. Many businesses use CSR in order to claim their social licence to operate. As the CSR activity often makes them seem legitimate and responsible, it gives managers an opportunity to hide and disguise the activities of the corporation. This is the ... • 20. Abstinence-Only Proposal Essay The foundation of the abstinence only policy was laid in 1981 under President Regan when the United States Congress passed the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) administered by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs (OAPP) (Denny, 2006). The main purpose of this this proposal was to keep sexual relationships until marriage (Weaver, 2005). The AFLA became founded on the belief of funding and developing abstinence only based curricula in public schools throughout the United States (Weaver, 2005). Federal funding for abstinence only programs in public schools was provided by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PL 104 193), also known as the Welfare Reform Act of 1995 (Wiley, 2002). The role of educating students about the importance of healthy sexual relationships has fallen hard and fast on public schools. School aged boys and girls are not receiving information from their parents on what decisions they should make in regards to sex. Parents are finding this topic of conversation too taboo to breach and as a result, students are getting what little information they are receiving from school. Less then half of school aged adolescents talk to their parents about sex and abstinence (Smith, 2005). The philosophy behind abstinence only policy implies that the greatest risk of informing students about their options for contraception would be that educators are condoning premarital sex. The risks that our students are already taking, however, are greater then policymakers are considering. It is generally accepted that the majority of sexual intercourse among young people remains unprotected (Westwood, 2006). Abstinence only curriculum is not preventing adolescents from having sex; it is just making them naГЇve to the risks they are taking with their lifestyle choices. • 22. Intellectual Humility And The Education World Intellectual Humility in the Education World Every teacher has their own bias. The people who write state standards and state tests also have biases. Students are biased on what they think they need to pay attention to in class. Teachers, state governments and students each believe that they know what is most important in their separate fields. None of these groups like to be told that they are teaching, writing, or learning wrong. However, it is still necessary for people to remain open to criticism because criticism may lead to an improvement down the road. But each group needs another group to be able to call them out on these issues. This is called staying humble. Intellectual humility is admitting to not knowing everything in a field of interest but still being willing to accept criticism in order to further knowledge of a subject and become more capable of doing a job better than before. Intellectual humility is combination of two things: common sense and critical thinking. Common sense is a characteristic that people sneer at. Speaking from experience, humans are prone to not listening to advice and doing what they think it is the best option. When peers and teachers start listing off x, y, and z reasons for why what they are doing is a bad idea, people without common sense will refuse to listen. Common sense requires us to look at the big picture and think carefully through all the possible options and go with the option that is most reasonable. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Stuart Mill Individuality Introduction John Stuart Mill (1806 1873) is recognised as one of the most prolific thinkers of the nineteenth century, whose liberal political philosophy has influenced intellectuals and political theorists for decades (Feinberg, 1986). At the same time, Mill s utilitarian approach to society at large reveals sensibilities and moral considerations that enhance his liberal attitudes in the most surprising ways. According to Losurdo (2011), it is widely believed that Mill is one of the greatest opponents of paternalism, supporting individuals liberty and autonomy. However, Mill is also accused of overt sentiment, ignorance of natural rights, or a diversion from original conceptions of Utilitarianism. As a result, this essay is concerned with his conception of individuality, as discussed in his On Liberty (1859), investigating how this notion, based on individual liberty and autonomy, opposes social control and paternalistic policies. The female characters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, are able to solve the mystery of who murdered John Wright while their male counterparts could not. This short story had been adapted from Glaspell s one act play Trifles written the previous year. The play consists of the same characters and plot line as the story. In both works, Glaspell depicts how the men, Sheriff Peters, Mr. Hale, and County Attorney, disregard the most important area in the house, the kitchen, when it comes to their investigation. In the end, the women are the ones who find the clues that lead to the conclusion that Minnie Wright, John Wright s wife, murdered him. Both of Glaspell s female characters illustrate the ability to step into a male dominated profession by taking on the role of detective. Anthropogenic Noise Pollution And Its Effects On Cetaceans Anthropogenic Noise Pollution and Its Effects on Cetaceans Cetaceans use sound extensively in both communication, hunting, and navigation. However as humanity continues to make use of the ocean we are constantly filling it with equipment that produces high amounts of sound. These devices are starting to have an impact on cetaceans worldwide, from mass strandings often linked to military exercises to area denials caused by busy commercial shipping lanes and seismic surveys. If consideration is not taken towards this problem now it could develop into something that could have degrading effects on cetacean populations in the future. Sound waves are nothing more than an energy transfer through a medium be it through a liquid, solid, or a gas. Sound pressure or intensity is measured on logarithmic scale in decibels dB which increases on an order of magnitude. For instance a quiet conversation would be around 30 dB and whereas the human pain threshold would be just over 100 dB. While the pitch or frequency of the sound is measured in hertz or Hz, the higher the hertz the higher the pitch of the sound and vice versa (Hildebrand, 2004). Anthropologic noise pollution can come from many different sources, some of the more common ones are commercial shipping, acoustic deterrent devices, military sonar, and explosives (used in some seismic surveys for oil and gas as well as military exercises). I know that the United States and its allies put much effort into keeping countries such as Iran and North Korea from attaining nuclear weapons. What was going on during the development of Pakistan s nuclear program? While Pakistan is an ally of the United States, in the region that Pakistan is located that could change quickly. In addition, I feel that you must prove that you are a stable country and society before you are permitted to possess such powerful weapons. Pakistan provides a very interesting topic of discussion that some people may not be aware. These findings are similar to Paulhus, Trapnell, Chen (1999) study, results of the study indicated firstborns were nominated by their siblings as most conscientious as well as most achieving and later born children were more frequently nominated as most liberal, agreeable, and rebellious. Another study supporting the hypothesis is a study conducted by Zweigenhaft and Von Ammon (2000). In the study it was hypothesized that later born children were more rebellious then firstborns. To do this they examined the birth order of a group of U.S. college students who had been arrested for engaging in civil disobedience in a labor dispute. • 32. Contributions of Psychology to the Juvenile Justice System INTRODUCTION The contributions of psychology to the juvenile justice system are important and growing. In assembling this Handbook, however, our primary goal was not simply to overview most of these contributions. Rather, we approach this topic with the view that psychology s most important contributions to juvenile justice are interdisciplinary and empirical. One cannot expect to make meaningful contributions to our legal system without recognizing the nature and structure of applicable law. Within that context, however, are questions about why and how frequently adolescents become involved in offending, how long they continue, what influences serve as risk and protective factors, how such adolescents might be assessed and rehabilitated in relevant and effective ways, and how important information about human development, assessment, and intervention might best be conveyed to juvenile justice professionals. Many of these questions are clearly interdisciplinary in scope. This Handbook provides relevant information from different specializations within psychology, including clinical, developmental, educational, family, forensic, and social. But it also includes perspectives from other behavioral sciences (e.g., sociology, criminology), natural sciences (biology) and mental health professions (e.g., psychiatry, social work) in the attempt to identify the most important sources of information to address the major questions on which we focus. Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs And Quality Of Experience Review of an article on learning theory: Academic Self Efficacy Beliefs and Quality of Experience In Learning INTRODUCTION Learning Theory In education and psychology, learning is generally defined as a practice that collectively brings together emotional, cognitive and environmental influences as well as earlier experiences for obtaining, improving, or even making changes in someone s knowledge, values, skills and also world views (Fisher, 2005). Learning is a process that mostly focuses on what occurs when learning happens. The explanation of what happens is distinctively illustrated in the learning theories. A learning theory is formulated as an attempt to describe how human beings and animals learn. This helps to understand the fundamentally complex process of learning. These learning theories comprise of two important values (Fisher, 2005). The first one is in providing terms and a conceptual outline for deducing the examples of learning that are observed. The other value is important when suggesting where and how to look for solutions for practical problems. The theories may not give the desired solutions, but they direct people s attention to the variables that are essential when finding solutions, (Hergenhahn, 2005). Learning theory is therefore, an abstract framework telling how information is absorbed in the brain, how it is processed and retained during learning activities. Indeed, one common belief in the Hispanic culture is that gay men are hyper creative. Another example of this duality in people from Latin America living in the United States is the constant proof of proficiency. For instance, one goes to the primary care, the first question when they notice you have a Hispanic last name and speak with an accent, do you understand English? Other times, they would speak slowly as if the patient was two year old. e.g., h o w ol d are you? • 40. Blanche Dubois Extract Throughout the extract and elsewhere in the play, Tennessee Williams presents Blanche as someone who has suffered, and will be purified as a result. The extract is from Scene 11, the last scene of A Streetcar Named Desire, and occurs some weeks after scenes 7 10, which take place on September 15, Blanche DuBoiss birthday. One can argue some weeks could be six weeks or so, and that the scene of the extract occurs in the largely Franco Spanish Catholic city of New Orleans is in November, All Souls Day. On this feast, Roman Catholics pray for the resurrection of those suffering in Purgatory, where souls destined for heaven are purified of all sin and imperfection. • 41. Neutral Subscale Research To properly understand the research question frame, we must explore the instrument in general and the methodological critiques that led to the short form used in this study. Also of note is the research focusing solely on the masculine and feminine subscales to the exclusion of the social desirability scale. We will briefly explore specific BSRI applications with respect to variables other than gender(e.g. race ethnicity). We will proceed with a literature review specifically focused on neutral subscale research and use. BSRI Development Background and the Social Desirability Scale Bem (1974) developed the Bem Sex Role Inventory to measure three constructs: Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny. The original form consisted of 60 items divided into three subscales that measured a person s masculinity, femininity, and a social desirability scale. The social desirability scale items were judged as neutral and statistically shown not to load on either masculinity or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Twenge (1997) suggested that scores on the masculine subscale, and the feminine subscale to a lesser degree, have rose over time with respect to gender. The rise was attributed to effects from culture and environmental factors leading women to identify with more masculine personality traits (Twenge, 1997). Auster and Ohm (2000) explored the measures in a contemporary American setting to assess score validity since the original BSRI was introduced 25 years earlier. The findings suggested that there was little change in validity for feminine scores but a significant change in the masculine constructs between the 1972 population and the 1999 population. Additionally, in the intervening 25 years, mean scores for masculine items rose while mean scores for feminine items fell (Auster Ohm, 2000). As with most BSRI studies, scores were provided for the masculine and feminine items, yet social desirability scores were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Unorthodox Of Women In Jane Eyre Women have a long history of being considered idle objects rather than humans with souls. Victorian society is exemplary of the objectivity women endure in a world ruled by patriarchs. An ideal Victorian woman is expected to be beautiful and reserved. Educated in roles that pertain to femininity, a Victorian woman is bred for a life of domesticity to accompany her role of inferiority. The ultimate achievement of an ideal Victorian woman is to marry a man that can provide her with financial security. Charlotte Bronte introduces Jane Eyre, a young woman who struggles to reconcile the unorthodox side of herself and the Victorian side. As a girl, Jane Eyre is ridiculed for her lower class status and her plainness; however, she is adamant about seeking fairness and using her mature intellect to combat the injustice brought upon her. Young Jane expresses her opinions whether it s blatant and explicative, or reserved and Victorian, which is a quality she carries into adulthood. During her adolescence, Jane easily succumbs to the unorthodox side of her persona and betrays societal norms; however, her maturation into womanhood and her relationship with Rochester provokes her ability to fulfill Victorian expectation. Jane s relationship with the Reeds exemplifies her unorthodox persona during the Victorian era. The Reeds are a wealthy family who despise Jane s existence. Mrs. Reed and her son John use their status to assert their authority and justify the abuse and neglect they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Beyond The Things They Carried Beyond the Things They Carried The Vietnam War began in 1954, consisting of many extensive, horrific years of battle that seemed to create more harm to the United States and its soldiers rather than to North Vietnam. The 500,000 United States military personnel returned home with the loss of the war and the loss of their friends on their minds. Although the physical and emotional experiences that the men went through is unfathomable, Tim O Brien does a great job portraying what life as a soldier was truly like in the Vietnam War. In the book The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien depicts the unstable emotional and psychological condition of the American soldiers through the symbolism of their belongings and personal anecdotes from their lives. The book opens with Tim O Brien listing items that the soldiers needed to carry with them for life in Vietnam, such as a P 38 can opener, mosquito repellent, C rations, dog tags, and many more necessities, weighing around twelve to eighteen pounds in total. Many men also had the added weight of weapons needed for combat, which then added another five to twenty six pounds depending on what weapon and the amount of ammunition necessary. On average, most men carried around thirty pounds, but the load was much higher when considering the emotional and psychological weight put on their shoulders from the impact of these items. Early on in the book Tim O Brien states, They carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Role Of Weather In The Great Gatsby It s More Than Just Rain or Snow In reality the weather and environment play a part in how people interact with one another and in some cases it can even influence a person s mood. Therefore, weather also plays a similar role in literature as it does in reality. The only difference is that in literature the significance of weatherimpacts the story more and has much sub contextual meaning than what is just portrayed on the surface level. Within different stories different types of weather can symbolize different things. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses fog to serve as a symbol for Gatsby s and Daisy s relationship. His choice for using fog as a symbol of their relationship is because it obscures Gatsby s vision of the green light on Daisy s house which, for Gatsby, it acts as a beacon letting him know where Daisy is. Also, it acts as a method of foreshadowment. Realistically, fog obscures one s vision and it renders the viewer blind to what s around them due to the fact that the fog encapsulates the person in a visual area that is generally only immediately in front of you. For example, the purpose of a lighthouse is to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He played an important role in forming a British Settlement, Singapore, in the Melaka straits despite facing rejections, such as Dutch or even resistance in London itself. He is a controversial person even in his time. Hence there is no doubt that there are lots of information about him and founding of Singapore in the internet. However, how do we assess these websites for its appropriateness towards scholarly research is the main objective of this essay.
