Drug ofAbuse Screening
1
9
7/6/2021 Toxicology & Forensic
Serology
• Detection of one or more illegal substance in urine,
blood,saliva,sweat or organ of deceased
• Testing detects substance normally not found in body
• Chromatographic technique can be use for screening
of multiple drugs (qualitative analysis)
• Cut off value use for quantitative screening
Drug ofAbuse Screening

0
7/6/2021 Toxicology & Forensic
Serology
• Positive qualitative screening test considered
presumptive
• Must be confirmed with more specific & sensitive
method
• Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or
liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
(LC-MS/MS) recommended for medicolegal cases
Commonly screened drug classes
