Forensic toxicology is the study of toxic substances and their physiological effects on living organisms. Forensic toxicologists have three primary responsibilities: postmortem drug testing, workplace drug testing, and identification of contraband materials. They investigate deaths from accidental poisonings, drug abuse, suicide, and homicide by collecting and analyzing body fluids and tissue samples using techniques like chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and immunoassay to identify toxins and drugs and determine whether levels were fatal.
