This document presents an adaptive zone selection algorithm for distance protection of a transmission line with a midpoint connected STATCOM device. The algorithm aims to address challenges to distance protection posed by the presence of the STATCOM. It investigates the impact of the STATCOM on apparent impedance seen by distance relays under different fault conditions using EMTDC/PSCAD software. An adaptive setting is proposed that calculates a new reach based on system and STATCOM parameters to ensure proper operation of distance relays for both underreach and overreach scenarios. The performance of the proposed adaptive algorithm is evaluated through simulations of various single line to ground and three phase fault cases with different fault locations, resistances and system load angles.

Design And Simulation Of Distributed Statcom Controller For Power Factor Impr...IJERA Editor
The STATCOM is a static reactive power compensator. It is connected to the grid through ac side reactors and
has a capacitor on the DC-link side. This DC-link capacitor is maintained at a given voltage under closed-loop
control while a set amount of reactive current is fed according to load requirements. The operating frequency of
the VSC is also controlled in a PLL (phase locked loop) manner. Hence, it is essential to have a closed-loop
feedback control operation of the STATCOM. The state space model of the STATCOM is non-linear. The nonlinear
model of the STATCOM is linearized. A linear model of the STACOM is proposed. In this model, the
grid voltage and the fundamental component of the STATCOM VSC terminal voltage are assumed to be inphase
and the modulation index is kept within unity. PI-controllers for the active and reactive currents as well as
the DC-link voltage of the STATCOM have been designed. The model, with PI controllers has been simulated
in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment with variation of the pre-charge voltage on the DC-link capacitor with
linear loads (inductive). Improvement of the power factor of the grid current is achieved for linear loads.

Elimination. The proposed method reduces Total Harmonic Distortion from
the input current and armature flux and thereby reducing the core losses.
Also the power requirement with the proposed switching technique is much
lesser than the existing switching scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through simulation and experimental results.

Source current harmonic mitigation of distorted voltage source by using shunt...IJECEIAES
In this paper, three-phase, four-wire shunt active power filter (SAPF) is utilized to mitigate system harmonics of distorted voltage source for unbalanced and nonlinear loads. Basically, the source voltage should be pure sinusoidal waveform to get a good mitigation of source current harmonics. In this under study system, the source voltage is assumed to be harmonic distortion non-sinusoidal voltage source. The phase locked loop (PLL) control circuit is wielded for extracting the fundamental component of the distorted source voltage to use it as an input signal to the SAPF control. Another input signal to the SAPF is the distorted load current. The SAPF control system uses (p-q) theory to calculate the optimum instantaneous current to be injected by the SAPF to mitigate the source current harmonics even the source voltage is harmonic distorted. MATLAB/SIMULINK software package is utilized to simulate the system under study. The effect of SAPF is tested when it’s used with and without the PLL control circuit. The simulation results show that, the THD of source current when using the PLL control circuit is improved to comply with the harmonic limits given in the IEEE 519-1992 and IEC 61000-4-7 standards.

This paper presents the application of modular multilevel converter (MMC) as a static compensator (STATCOM) for reactive current control. The current control is mostly achieved using proportional controller, proportional-integral (PI) controller, and hysteresis controller among others. PI controllers have the advantage of low harmonics and small variations. However, due to the PI controller’s dependency on the system parameters and also due to the variations within the MMC during capacitors voltage control, variation in the MMC performance during the STATCOM non-ideal operations occur. To mitigate this, an improved performance of MMC will be presented using vector-based compensation concept. The proposed control will be introduced to depress the effect of the dynamics of the MMC based STATCOM non-ideal variations considering the impact of the voltage disturbance. This will be achieved by the introduction of voltage variables to subtract the transient variations from PI controllers’ outputs at the grid-interface; thus, improving the performance.

The study made in this paper concerns the use of the voltage-oriented control (VOC) of three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier with constant switching frequency. This control method, called voltage-oriented controlwith space vector modulation (VOC-SVM). The proposed control scheme has been founded on the transformation between stationary (α-β) and and synchronously rotating (d-q) coordinate system, it is based on two cascaded control loops so that a fast inner loop controls the grid current and an external loop DC-link voltage, while the DC-bus voltage is maintained at the desired level and ansured the unity power factor operation. So, the stable state performance and robustness against the load’s disturbance of PWM rectifiers are boths improved. The proposed scheme has been implemented and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The control system of the VOC-SVM strategy has been built based on dSPACE system with DS1104 controller board. The results obtained show the validity of the model and its control method. Compared with the conventional SPWM method, the VOC-SVM ensures high performance and fast transient response.
Voltage Sag Mitigation in Utility Connected System Using Current Source Conve...IDES Editor
This paper discusses the implementation of current
source converter based distribution type static synchronous
compensator. For eliminating the lower order harmonics, the
power semiconductors are switched by pulse width modulation
technique. Current source converter, input filter, dc link
reactor are combined to design the proposed CSC based
STATCOM. Since the STATCOM is a current injection
device, the performance of the device is improved by a currentsource
converter (CSC) combination. So a controllable current
is generated at the output terminals of the device. Filter circuit
at the input terminal is designed to eliminate the higher order
harmonics. The proposed D- STATCOM is simulated and the
results are validated using MATLAB.
A New Proposal for OFCC-based Instrumentation AmplifierIJECEIAES
This contribution puts forward a new voltage mode instrumentation amplifier (VMIA) based on operational floating current conveyor (OFCC). It presents high impedance at input terminals and provides output at low impedance making the proposal ideal for voltage mode operation. The proposed VMIA architecture has two stages - the first stage comprises of two OFCCs to sense input voltages and coverts the voltage difference to current while the second stage has single OFCC that converts the current to voltage. In addition it employs two resistors to provide gain and imposes no condition on the values of resistors. The behavior of the proposed structure is also analyzed for OFCC non idealities namely finite transimpedance and tracking error. The proposal is verified through SPICE simulations using CMOS based schematic of OFCC. Experimental results, by bread boarding it using commercially available IC AD844, are also included.

Performance Analysis of the Distance Relay Characteristics in a Compensated T...MohammadMomani26
The present work investigates the effect of the FACTS devices on distance relay operation. FACTS devices have different power system performance, stability, and load ability advantages. This paper presents FACTS technologies' effect on the distance protective relay using the measured impedance between the fault location and the relaying point. Different factors and parameters are changed to see their impacts on the studied system. It is shown that the measured impedance is affected by the presence of the FACTS devices depending on their type (series, parallel, and hybrid), fault location, and the operation point of the FACTS device. The analyses present that the shunt FACTS devices' effect may cause overreach problems to the relay; however, series FACTS devices may cause underreach problems in distance characteristics. MATLAB 2019b does the simulation test; the simulation results prove the mathematical analysis. The numerical analysis in this paper may be used for researchers in fault analysis and protection coordinators.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
