Power Quality Improvement by UPQC based on Voltage Source ConvertersIJRST Journal
In modern power system consists of wide range of electrical, electronic and power electronic equipment in commercial and industrial applications. Since most of the electronic equipment’s are nonlinear in nature these will induce harmonics in the system, which affect the sensitive loads to be fed from the system. These problems are partially solved with the help of LC passive filters. However, this kind of filter cannot solve random variation in the load current wave form and voltage wave form. Active filters can resolve this problem. However, the cost of active filters is high. They are difficult to implement in large scale. Additionally, they also present lower efficiency than shunt passive filters. One of the many solutions is the use of a combined system of shunt and active series filters like Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) which aims at achieving a low cost under highly effective control. The UPQC device combines a shunt active filter together with a series active filter in a back-to-back configuration, to simultaneously compensate the supply voltage and the load current or to mitigate any type of voltage and current fluctuations and power factor correction in a power distribution network, such that improved power quality can be made available at the point of common coupling. The control strategies are modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The performance is also observed under influence of utility side disturbances such as harmonics and voltage sags. The simulation results are compared without and with UPQC for the verification of results.

ABSTRACT
This paper presents a new methodology to reduce harmonic distortion in UPQC using artificial neural network
and fuzzy logic controller. So this paper main aim is improve power quality by using UPQC with ANN and FLC. The most purpose of the proposed (ANN & FLC) is capable of providing good static and dynamic performances compared to PI controller. The UPQC is to control on voltage flicker/unbalance, reactive power and harmonics. In different words, the UPQC has the potential of up power quality at the purpose of installation on power industrial power systems. The appliance of computing is growing quick within the space of power electronics and drives. From olden days to now days we are using twelve switches used in back to back configuration. But now we are using nine switches instead of 12
switches. In 9 switch UPQC converter given the most useful benefits compared to 12 switches power converter. The nine switches UPQC converter gets the best results by using of three methods. They are one is PI controller technique, ANN controller technique and FLC controller technique. By contrast PI, FLC and ANN, ANN is better than (FLC & PI) for power quality enhancement and voltage sag and voltage swell mitigations. The factitious neural network (ANN) is taken into account as a replacement tool to style management electronic equipment for power quality (PQ) devices. A whole
simulation study is administrated to analysis the performance of the ANN controller and compares its performance with the quality FLC & PI controller’s results. The nine-switch convertor has already been proved to possess sure benefits,

Harmonics created by nonlinear loads such as arc furnaces, cycloconverters and motor drives destroys the power quality in the system. They not only affect the working of adjacent loads but also shorten the life of power equipment by creating excessive losses. ‘Shunt Active Power Filter’ is a modern addition to family of compensating devices. It has superior qualities over its contemporaries namely SVCs and STATCOMs. It not only mitigates harmonics within the allowable limits defined by IEEE Std 519-1992, but also compensates unbalancing and reactive power in the system. Consequently, only active power is supplied by the source thus power factor approaches unity. A fully functional Simulink model of Shunt Active Power Filter has been designed based on ‘Instantaneous Power Theory’ or ‘p-q Theory’. The results of simulation comply with all the features described by the theory, justifying employment of SAPF in the industry.
Mitigation of Voltage Imbalance in A Two Feeder Distribution System Using IupqcIJMERJOURNAL
ABSTRACT: Proliferation of electronic equipment in commercial and industrial processes has resulted in increasingly sensitive electrical loads to be fed from power distribution system which introduce contamination to voltage and current waveforms at the point of common coupling of industrial loads. The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is connected between two different feeders (lines), hence this method of connection of the UPQC is called as Interline UPQC (IUPQC).This paper proposes a new connection for a UPQC to improve the power quality of two feeders in a distribution system. Interline Unified Power Quality Conditioner (IUPQC), specifically aims at the integration of series VSC and Shunt VSC to provide high quality power supply by means of voltage sag/swell compensation, harmonic elimination in a power distribution network, so that improved power quality can be made available at the point of common coupling. The structure, control and capability of the IUPQC are discussed in this paper. The efficiency of the proposed configuration has been verified through simulation using MATLAB/ SIMULINK.

A Novel Method for Prevention of Bandwidth Distributed Denial of Service AttacksIJERD Editor
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks became a massive threat to the Internet. Traditional
Architecture of internet is vulnerable to the attacks like DDoS. Attacker primarily acquire his army of Zombies,
then that army will be instructed by the Attacker that when to start an attack and on whom the attack should be
done. In this paper, different techniques which are used to perform DDoS Attacks, Tools that were used to
perform Attacks and Countermeasures in order to detect the attackers and eliminate the Bandwidth Distributed
Denial of Service attacks (B-DDoS) are reviewed. DDoS Attacks were done by using various Flooding
techniques which are used in DDoS attack.
The main purpose of this paper is to design an architecture which can reduce the Bandwidth
Distributed Denial of service Attack and make the victim site or server available for the normal users by
eliminating the zombie machines. Our Primary focus of this paper is to dispute how normal machines are
turning into zombies (Bots), how attack is been initiated, DDoS attack procedure and how an organization can
save their server from being a DDoS victim. In order to present this we implemented a simulated environment
with Cisco switches, Routers, Firewall, some virtual machines and some Attack tools to display a real DDoS
attack. By using Time scheduling, Resource Limiting, System log, Access Control List and some Modular
policy Framework we stopped the attack and identified the Attacker (Bot) machines

Simulation of D-STATCOM to study Voltage Stability in Distribution systemijsrd.com
This paper presents the simulation of D-statcom to understand the improvement of voltage stability [1] of distribution system. The power circuits of the D-STATCOM and distribution networks are made up of simpower system blocks, while the control circuits made with the simulink blocks The STATCOM is applied to regulate transmission voltage to allow greater power flow in a voltage limited transmission network, in the same manner as a static var compensator (SVC), the STATCOM has further potential by giving an inherently faster response and greater output to a system with depressed voltage and offers improved quality of supply. The main applications of the STATCOM are; Distribution STATCOM (D-STATCOM) exhibits high speed control of reactive power to provide voltage stabilization and other type of system control. The DSTATCOM protects the utility transmission or distribution system from voltage sag and /or flicker caused by rapidly varying reactive current demand. During the transient conditions the D-STATCOM provides leading or lagging reactive power to active system stability, power factor correction and load balancing.

The most widely utilization of the STATCOM is in enhancing the voltage stability of the transmission line. A voltage regulator is a FACTs device used to adjust the voltage disturbance by injecting a controllable voltage into the system. This paper implement Nruro-Fuzzy controller to control the STATCOM to improve the voltage profile of the power network. The controller has been simulated for some kinds of disturbances and the results show improvements in voltage profile of the system. The performance of STATCOM with its controller was very close within 98% of the nominal value of the busbar voltage.
Enhancement of Power System Dynamics Using a Novel Series Compensation SchemeIJMER
Phase imbalanced capacitive compensation is a “hybrid” series compensation scheme, where the
series capacitive compensation in one phase is created using a single-phase TCSC in series with a fixed capacitor
(Cc), and the other two phases are compensated by fixed series capacitors (C). The TCSC control is initially set
such that its equivalent compensations at the power frequency combined with the fixed capacitor yield a
resultant compensation equal to the other two phases. Thus, the phase balance is maintained at the power
frequency while at any other frequency, a phase imbalance is created. The effectiveness of the scheme in damping
power system oscillations for various network conditions, namely different system faults and tie-line power flows is
evaluated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK Software

Temporary voltage swells and sags appear with high frequency in electric power systems, and they significantly affect sensitive loads such as industrial manufacturing or communication devices. This paper presents a strategy to design proportional-resonant controllers for three full-bridge voltage-source converters with a common DC-link in dynamic voltage restorer systems. The proposed controllers allow the system to quickly overcome temporary unbalanced voltage sags. Simulation results carried out in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results implemented in a Typhoon HIL402 device demonstrate the ability of the proposed design method. The results show that the system with the proposed controllers can ride-through single-phase or double-phase voltage sags up to 55% and three-phase voltage sags up to 70% in a duration less than one grid-voltage cycle.

Abstract: Power Quality problem in a system leads to various disturbances such as voltage fluctuations, transients and waveform distortions that results in a mis-operation or a failure of end user equipment. There are different types of custom power devices like Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) and Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) which can effectively use for mitigation of different type of power quality problems. This paper describes the technique of correcting the supply voltage sag distributed system and also describes performance comparison are presented between DVR and DSTATCOM to know how both the devices successfully been applied to power system for regulating system voltage effectively. DSTATCOM and DVR both of them based on VSI principle. A DVR is a series compensation device which injects a voltage in series with system and a DSTATCOM is a shunt compensation device which injects a current into the system to correct the power quality problems. This paper presents a power system operation with PI controller with abc to dq0 convertor approach. Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) is also calculated for the system with and without compensation. Results are presented to assess the performance of devices as a potential custom power solution. Improve dynamic voltage control and thus increase system load ability. This paper presents modeling and simulation of DVR & DSTATCOM in MATLAB/Simulink.

The study made in this paper concerns the use of the voltage-oriented control (VOC) of three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier with constant switching frequency. This control method, called voltage-oriented controlwith space vector modulation (VOC-SVM). The proposed control scheme has been founded on the transformation between stationary (α-β) and and synchronously rotating (d-q) coordinate system, it is based on two cascaded control loops so that a fast inner loop controls the grid current and an external loop DC-link voltage, while the DC-bus voltage is maintained at the desired level and ansured the unity power factor operation. So, the stable state performance and robustness against the load’s disturbance of PWM rectifiers are boths improved. The proposed scheme has been implemented and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The control system of the VOC-SVM strategy has been built based on dSPACE system with DS1104 controller board. The results obtained show the validity of the model and its control method. Compared with the conventional SPWM method, the VOC-SVM ensures high performance and fast transient response.

Influence of tensile behaviour of slab on the structural Behaviour of shear c...IJERD Editor
-A composite beam is composed of a steel beam and a slab connected by means of shear connectors
like studs installed on the top flange of the steel beam to form a structure behaving monolithically. This study
analyzes the effects of the tensile behavior of the slab on the structural behavior of the shear connection like slip
stiffness and maximum shear force in composite beams subjected to hogging moment. The results show that the
shear studs located in the crack-concentration zones due to large hogging moments sustain significantly smaller
shear force and slip stiffness than the other zones. Moreover, the reduction of the slip stiffness in the shear
connection appears also to be closely related to the change in the tensile strain of rebar according to the increase
of the load. Further experimental and analytical studies shall be conducted considering variables such as the
reinforcement ratio and the arrangement of shear connectors to achieve efficient design of the shear connection
in composite beams subjected to hogging moment.

rediscovered through time. Recent endeavours by the Geological Research Authority of Sudan led to the
discovery of a score of occurrences with gold and massive sulphide mineralizations. In the nineties of the
previous century the Geological Research Authority of Sudan (GRAS) in cooperation with BRGM utilized
satellite data of Landsat TM using spectral ratio technique to map possible mineralized zones in the Red Sea
Hills of Sudan. The outcome of the study mapped a gossan type gold mineralization. Band ratio technique was
applied to Arbaat area and a signature of alteration zone was detected. The alteration zones are commonly
associated with mineralization. The alteration zones are commonly associated with mineralization. A filed check
confirmed the existence of stock work of gold bearing quartz in the alteration zone. Another type of gold
mineralization that was discovered using remote sensing is the gold associated with metachert in the Atmur
Desert.
Reducing Corrosion Rate by Welding DesignIJERD Editor
The paper addresses the importance of welding design to prevent corrosion at steel. Welding is
used to join pipe, profiles at bridges, spindle, and a lot more part of engineering construction. The
problems happened associated with welding are common issues in these fields, especially corrosion.
Corrosion can be reduced with many methods, they are painting, controlling humidity, and also good
welding design. In the research, it can be found that reducing residual stress on the welding can be
solved in corrosion rate reduction problem.
Preheating on 500oC and 600oC give better condition to reduce corosion rate than condition after
preheating 400oC. For all welding groove type, material with 500oC and 600oC preheating after 14 days
corrosion test is 0,5%-0,69% lost. Material with 400oC preheating after 14 days corrosion test is 0,57%-0,76%
lost.
Welding groove also influence corrosion rate. X and V type welding groove give better condition to reduce
corrosion rate than use 1/2V and 1/2 X welding groove. After 14 days corrosion test, the samples with
X welding groove type is 0,5%-0,57% lost. The samples with V welding groove after 14 days corrosion test is
0,51%-0,59% lost. The samples with 1/2V and 1/2X welding groove after 14 days corrosion test is 0,58%-
0,71% lost.
Router 1X3 – RTL Design and VerificationIJERD Editor
Routing is the process of moving a packet of data from source to destination and enables messages
to pass from one computer to another and eventually reach the target machine. A router is a networking device
that forwards data packets between computer networks. It is connected to two or more data lines from different
networks (as opposed to a network switch, which connects data lines from one single network). This paper,
mainly emphasizes upon the study of router device, it‟s top level architecture, and how various sub-modules of
router i.e. Register, FIFO, FSM and Synchronizer are synthesized, and simulated and finally connected to its top
module.
Active Power Exchange in Distributed Power-Flow Controller (DPFC) At Third Ha...IJERD Editor
This paper presents a component within the flexible ac-transmission system (FACTS) family, called
distributed power-flow controller (DPFC). The DPFC is derived from the unified power-flow controller (UPFC)
with an eliminated common dc link. The DPFC has the same control capabilities as the UPFC, which comprise
the adjustment of the line impedance, the transmission angle, and the bus voltage. The active power exchange
between the shunt and series converters, which is through the common dc link in the UPFC, is now through the
transmission lines at the third-harmonic frequency. DPFC multiple small-size single-phase converters which
reduces the cost of equipment, no voltage isolation between phases, increases redundancy and there by
reliability increases. The principle and analysis of the DPFC are presented in this paper and the corresponding
simulation results that are carried out on a scaled prototype are also shown.
Mitigation of Voltage Sag/Swell with Fuzzy Control Reduced Rating DVRIJERD Editor
Power quality has been an issue that is becoming increasingly pivotal in industrial electricity
consumers point of view in recent times. Modern industries employ Sensitive power electronic equipments,
control devices and non-linear loads as part of automated processes to increase energy efficiency and
productivity. Voltage disturbances are the most common power quality problem due to this the use of a large
numbers of sophisticated and sensitive electronic equipment in industrial systems is increased. This paper
discusses the design and simulation of dynamic voltage restorer for improvement of power quality and
reduce the harmonics distortion of sensitive loads. Power quality problem is occurring at non-standard
voltage, current and frequency. Electronic devices are very sensitive loads. In power system voltage sag,
swell, flicker and harmonics are some of the problem to the sensitive load. The compensation capability
of a DVR depends primarily on the maximum voltage injection ability and the amount of stored
energy available within the restorer. This device is connected in series with the distribution feeder at
medium voltage. A fuzzy logic control is used to produce the gate pulses for control circuit of DVR and the
circuit is simulated by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software.
Study on the Fused Deposition Modelling In Additive ManufacturingIJERD Editor
Additive manufacturing process, also popularly known as 3-D printing, is a process where a product
is created in a succession of layers. It is based on a novel materials incremental manufacturing philosophy.
Unlike conventional manufacturing processes where material is removed from a given work price to derive the
final shape of a product, 3-D printing develops the product from scratch thus obviating the necessity to cut away
materials. This prevents wastage of raw materials. Commonly used raw materials for the process are ABS
plastic, PLA and nylon. Recently the use of gold, bronze and wood has also been implemented. The complexity
factor of this process is 0% as in any object of any shape and size can be manufactured.

Secure Image Transmission for Cloud Storage System Using Hybrid SchemeIJERD Editor
- Data over the cloud is transferred or transmitted between servers and users. Privacy of that
data is very important as it belongs to personal information. If data get hacked by the hacker, can be
used to defame a person’s social data. Sometimes delay are held during data transmission. i.e. Mobile
communication, bandwidth is low. Hence compression algorithms are proposed for fast and efficient
transmission, encryption is used for security purposes and blurring is used by providing additional
layers of security. These algorithms are hybridized for having a robust and efficient security and
transmission over cloud storage system.
Application of Buckley-Leverett Equation in Modeling the Radius of Invasion i...IJERD Editor
A thorough review of existing literature indicates that the Buckley-Leverett equation only analyzes
waterflood practices directly without any adjustments on real reservoir scenarios. By doing so, quite a number
of errors are introduced into these analyses. Also, for most waterflood scenarios, a radial investigation is more
appropriate than a simplified linear system. This study investigates the adoption of the Buckley-Leverett
equation to estimate the radius invasion of the displacing fluid during waterflooding. The model is also adopted
for a Microbial flood and a comparative analysis is conducted for both waterflooding and microbial flooding.
Results shown from the analysis doesn’t only records a success in determining the radial distance of the leading
edge of water during the flooding process, but also gives a clearer understanding of the applicability of
microbes to enhance oil production through in-situ production of bio-products like bio surfactans, biogenic
gases, bio acids etc.
Gesture Gaming on the World Wide Web Using an Ordinary Web CameraIJERD Editor
- Gesture gaming is a method by which users having a laptop/pc/x-box play games using natural or
bodily gestures. This paper presents a way of playing free flash games on the internet using an ordinary webcam
with the help of open source technologies. Emphasis in human activity recognition is given on the pose
estimation and the consistency in the pose of the player. These are estimated with the help of an ordinary web
camera having different resolutions from VGA to 20mps. Our work involved giving a 10 second documentary to
the user on how to play a particular game using gestures and what are the various kinds of gestures that can be
performed in front of the system. The initial inputs of the RGB values for the gesture component is obtained by
instructing the user to place his component in a red box in about 10 seconds after the short documentary before
the game is finished. Later the system opens the concerned game on the internet on popular flash game sites like
miniclip, games arcade, GameStop etc and loads the game clicking at various places and brings the state to a
place where the user is to perform only gestures to start playing the game. At any point of time the user can call
off the game by hitting the esc key and the program will release all of the controls and return to the desktop. It
was noted that the results obtained using an ordinary webcam matched that of the Kinect and the users could
relive the gaming experience of the free flash games on the net. Therefore effective in game advertising could
also be achieved thus resulting in a disruptive growth to the advertising firms.

“MS-Extractor: An Innovative Approach to Extract Microsatellites on „Y‟ Chrom...IJERD Editor
Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR), also known as Microsatellites, have been extensively used as
molecular markers due to their abundance and high degree of polymorphism. The nucleotide sequences of
polymorphic forms of the same gene should be 99.9% identical. So, Microsatellites extraction from the Gene is
crucial. However, Microsatellites repeat count is compared, if they differ largely, he has some disorder. The Y
chromosome likely contains 50 to 60 genes that provide instructions for making proteins. Because only males
have the Y chromosome, the genes on this chromosome tend to be involved in male sex determination and
development. Several Microsatellite Extractors exist and they fail to extract microsatellites on large data sets of
giga bytes and tera bytes in size. The proposed tool “MS-Extractor: An Innovative Approach to extract
Microsatellites on „Y‟ Chromosome” can extract both Perfect as well as Imperfect Microsatellites from large
data sets of human genome „Y‟. The proposed system uses string matching with sliding window approach to
locate Microsatellites and extracts them.
Importance of Measurements in Smart GridIJERD Editor
- The need to get reliable supply, independence from fossil fuels, and capability to provide clean
energy at a fixed and lower cost, the existing power grid structure is transforming into Smart Grid. The
development of a smart energy distribution grid is a current goal of many nations. A Smart Grid should have
new capabilities such as self-healing, high reliability, energy management, and real-time pricing. This new era
of smart future grid will lead to major changes in existing technologies at generation, transmission and
distribution levels. The incorporation of renewable energy resources and distribution generators in the existing
grid will increase the complexity, optimization problems and instability of the system. This will lead to a
paradigm shift in the instrumentation and control requirements for Smart Grids for high quality, stable and
reliable electricity supply of power. The monitoring of the grid system state and stability relies on the
availability of reliable measurement of data. In this paper the measurement areas that highlight new
measurement challenges, development of the Smart Meters and the critical parameters of electric energy to be
monitored for improving the reliability of power systems has been discussed.
Study of Macro level Properties of SCC using GGBS and Lime stone powderIJERD Editor
One of the major environmental concerns is the disposal of the waste materials and utilization of
industrial by products. Lime stone quarries will produce millions of tons waste dust powder every year. Having
considerable high degree of fineness in comparision to cement this material may be utilized as a partial
replacement to cement. For this purpose an experiment is conducted to investigate the possibility of using lime
stone powder in the production of SCC with combined use GGBS and how it affects the fresh and mechanical
properties of SCC. First SCC is made by replacing cement with GGBS in percentages like 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and
by taking the optimum mix with GGBS lime stone powder is blended to mix in percentages like 5, 10, 15, 20 as
a partial replacement to cement. Test results shows that the SCC mix with combination of 30% GGBS and 15%
limestone powder gives maximum compressive strength and fresh properties are also in the limits prescribed by
the EFNARC.
Seismic Drift Consideration in soft storied RCC buildings: A Critical ReviewIJERD Editor
Reinforced concrete frame buildings are becoming increasingly common in urban India. Many such
buildings constructed in recent times have a special feature – the ground storey is left open for the purpose of
parking, i.e., columns in the ground floor do not have any partition walls (of either masonry or
Reinforced concrete) between them. Such buildings are often called open ground storey buildings. The
relative horizontal displacement in the ground storey is much larger than storeys above it. The total horizontal
earthquake force it can carry in the ground storey is significantly smaller than storeys above it. The soft or weak
storey may exist at any storey level other than ground storey level. The presence of walls in upper storeys
makes them much stiffer than the open ground storey. Still Multi storey reinforced concrete buildings are
continuing to be built in India which has open ground storeys. It is imperative to know the behavior of
soft storey building to the seismic load for designing various retrofit strategies. Hence it is important to
study and understand the response of such buildings and make such buildings earthquake resistant based
on the study to prevent their collapse and to save the loss of life and property.

Abstract––With the widespread use of harmonic generating devices, the control of harmonic currents to maintain a high
level of power quality is becoming increasingly important. An effective way for harmonic suppression is the harmonic
compensation by using active power filter. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of DSTATCOM control strategies
put forward recently. It is aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of DSTATCOM control methods to
researchers and application engineers dealing with harmonic suppression issues. Many control techniques have been
designed, developed, and realized for active filters in recent years. This paper presents different types of Synchronous
reference frame methods for real time generation of compensating current for harmonic mitigation and reactive power
compensation. All the techniques are analyzed mathematically and simulation results are obtained which are being
compared in terms of its compensation performance with different parameters under steady state condition. The three
techniques analyzed are the Synchronous Reference Frame Theory (SRF), SRF theory without synchronizing circuit like
phase lock loop (PLL) also called instantaneous current component theory and finally modified SRF theory. Simulation
results are obtained under sinusoidal balanced voltage source balanced load condition. The comparison and effectiveness of
all the methods is based on the theoretical analysis and simulation results obtained with MATLAB employing a three phase
three wire DSTATCOM test system.
Keywords–– D-STATCOM, Voltage Sags, Voltage Source Converter (VSC).
I. INTRODUCTION
One of the most common power quality problems today is voltage dips. A voltage dip is a short time (10 ms to 1
minute) event during which a reduction in r.m.s voltage magnitude occurs. It is often set only by two parameters,
depth/magnitude and duration. The voltage dip magnitude is ranged from 10% to 90% of nominal voltage (which
corresponds to 90% to 10% remaining voltage) and with a duration from half a cycle to 1 min. In a three-phase system a
voltage dip is by nature a three-phase phenomenon, which affects both the phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase voltages. A
voltage dip is caused by a fault in the utility system, a fault within the customer’s facility or a large increase of the loa d
current, like starting a motor or transformer energizing. Typical faults are single-phase or multiple-phase short circuits,
which leads to high currents. The high current results in a voltage drop over the network impedance. At the fault location the
voltage in the faulted phases drops close to zero, whereas in the non-faulted phases it remains more or less unchanged [1, 2].
Voltage dips are one of the most occurring power quality problems. Off course, for an industry an outage is worse,
than a voltage dip, but voltage dips occur more often and cause severe problems and economical losses. Utilities oft en focus
on disturbances from end-user equipment as the main power quality problems. This is correct for many disturbances, flicker,
harmonics, etc., but voltage dips mainly have their origin in the higher voltage levels. Faults due to lightning, is one of the
most common causes to voltage dips on overhead lines. If the economical losses due to voltage dips are significant,
mitigation actions can be profitable for the customer and even in some cases for the utility. Since there is no standard
solution which will work for every site, each mitigation action must be carefully planned and evaluated. There are different
ways to mitigate voltage dips, swell and interruptions in transmission and distribution systems. At present, a wide range of
very flexible controllers, which capitalize on newly available power electronics components, are emerging for custom power
applications [3, 4]. Among these, the distribution static compensator and the dynamic voltage restorer are most effective
devices, both of them based on the VSC principle.
STATCOM is often used in transmission system. When it is used in distribution system, it is called D-STATCOM
(STATCOM in Distribution system). D-STATCOM is a key FACTS controller and it utilizes power electronics to solve
many power quality problems commonly faced by distribution systems. Potential applications of D-STATCOM include
power factor correction, voltage regulation, load balancing and harmonic reduction. Comparing with the SVC, the D-
STATCOM has quicker response time and compact structure. It is expected that the D-STATCOM will replace the roles of
SVC in nearly future D-STATCOM and STATCOM are different in both structure and function, while the choice of control
strategy is related to the main-circuit structure and main function of compensators [3], so D-STATCOM and STATCOM
adopt different control strategy. At present, the use of STATCOM is wide and its strategy is mature, while the introduction
of D-STATCOM is seldom reported. Refer to the strategies for STATCOM, in this paper, a compound control strategy used
in D-STATCOM is presented to achieve the purpose of rapid-response compensation. A PWM-based control scheme has
been implemented to control the electronic valves in the two-level VSC used in the D-STATCOM [5, 6].

Figure. 1 Basic principal of shunt current compensation DSTATCOM
II. DESIGN OF DSTATCOM
A. Principle of DSTATCOM
A D-STATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator), which is schematically depicted in Figure-1, consists of a two-
level Voltage Source Converter (VSC), a dc energy storage device, a coupling transformer connected in shunt to the
distribution network through a coupling transformer. The VSC converts the dc voltage across the storage device into a set of
three-phase ac output voltages. These voltages are in phase and coupled with the ac system through the reactance of the
coupling transformer. Suitable adjustment of the phase and magnitude of the D-STATCOM output voltages allows effective
control of active and reactive power exchanges between the DSTATCOM and the ac system. Such configuration allows the
device to absorb or generate controllable active and reactive power.
Figure – 1 Schematic Diagram of a DSTATCOM
The VSC connected in shunt with the ac system provides a multifunctional topology which can be used for up to
three quite distinct purposes:
66
3. Modeling and Simulation of SRF and P-Q based Control DSTATCOM
1. Voltage regulation and compensation of reactive power;
2. Correction of power factor
3. Elimination of current harmonics.
Here, such device is employed to provide continuous voltage regulation using an indirectly controlled converter.
As shown in Figure-1 the shunt injected current Ish corrects the voltage sag by adjusting the voltage drop across the system
impedance Zth. The value of Ish can be controlled by adjusting the output voltage of the converter. The shunt injected current
Ish can be written as,
Ish = IL – IS = IL – ( Vth – VL ) / Zth (1)
Ish /_η = IL /_- θ (2)
The complex power injection of the D-STATCOM can be expressed as,
Ssh = VL Ish* (3)
It may be mentioned that the effectiveness of the DSTATCOM in correcting voltage sag depends on the value of
Zth or fault level of the load bus. When the shunt injected current Ish is kept in quadrature with VL, the desired voltage
correction can be achieved without injecting any active power into the system. On the other hand, when the value of I sh is
minimized, the same voltage correction can be achieved with minimum apparent power injection into the system.
III. SRF METHODS
Among the several methods presented in the literature, the Synchronous Reference Frame method (SRF) is one of
the most common and probably it is widely used method. This section is organized as to describe succinctly the SRF
methods. The three methods presented in this section with some results obtained with the above mentioned methods. The
nonlinear load considered is a three-phase diode bridge rectifier.
A Synchronous Reference Theory (SRF)
In the SRF [5], the load current signals are transformed into the conventional rotating frame d-q. If theta is the
transformation angle, the transformation is defined by:
Fig.2 shows the basic configuration of synchronous reference frame. In the SRF is a time varying angle that
represents the angular position of the reference frame which is rotating at constant speed in synchronism with the three phase
ac voltages. In the SRF is a time varying angle that represents the angular position of the reference frame which is
rotating at constant speed in synchronism with the three phase ac voltages. To implement the SRF method some kind of
synchronizing system should be used. In [6] phase-locked loop (PLL) is used for the implementation of this method. In this
case the speed of the reference frame is practically constant, that is, the method behaves as if the reference frame’s moment
of inertia is infinite. The fundamental currents of the d-q components are now dc values. The harmonics appear like ripple.
Harmonic isolation of the d-q transformed signal is achieved by removing the dc offset. This is accomplished using high pass
filters (HPF). In spite of a high pass filter, a low pass filter is used to obtain the reference source current in d-q coordinates.

B. Instantaneous Current Component (id-iq) Theory
The Modified Synchronous Frame method is presented in [7]. It is called the instantaneous current component (id-
iq) method. This is similar to the SRF frame method. The transformation angle is now obtained with the voltages of the ac
network. The major difference is that, due to voltage harmonics and imbalance, the speed of the reference frame is no longer
constant. It varies instantaneously depending of the waveform of the three phase voltage system. In this method the
compensating currents are obtained from the instantaneous active and reactive current components and of the nonlinear load.
In the same way, the mains voltages V(a,b,c) and the polluted currents il(a,b,c) in α-β components must be calculated as
given by (2), where C is Clarke Transformation Matrix. However, the load current components are derived from a
synchronous reference frame based on the Park transformation, where represents the instantaneous voltage vector angle (3).

Fig. 3 shows the block diagram SRF method. Under balanced and sinusoidal mains voltage conditions angle θ is a
uniformly increasing function of time. This transformation angle is sensitive to voltage harmonics and unbalance; therefore
dθ/dt may not be constant over a mains period. With transformation (2) and (3) the direct voltage component is
IV. MATLAB/SIMULINK MODELING AND SIMULATION RESULTS
Fig. 5 shows the Matlab/Simulink model of Shunt active power filter. Here simulation is carried out for four cases.
In case one APF is simulated using Synchronous Reference Theory (SRF), in case two APF is simulated using Instantaneous
Current Component (id-iq) Theory, in case three APF is simulated using Modified (id-iq) Theory and case four APF is
simulated in BLDC drive application.

V. CONCLUSION
This paper presents the compensation performance of all the different SRF techniques under sinusoidal voltage
source condition as shown in table-1. Results are similar with gained source THD under IEEE 519, but under various filter
type the chebyshev type filter is having superior performance compare to Butterworth filter for all methods. The
Synchronous Reference Frame method is one of the most common and performing methods for detection of harmonics in
active filters. An Improved Synchronous Reference Frame Method for the control of active power filters was presented. It is
called Filtered Modified Reference Frame Method (FMRF) and is based on the same principle as the Synchronous Reference
Frame method. However, this new method explores the fact that the performance of the active filter to isolate harmonics
depends on the speed of the system that determines the rotating reference frame, but doesn’t depend on its position. So, the
delay introduced by the ac voltage filters, used for the detection of the reference frame, has no influence on the detection

capability of the method. Compared with other methods, this new method presents some advantages due to its simplicity.
Finally a BLDC drive application is considered for simulation purpose. THD plots without APF and with APF are presented
