Dipyridamole is an anticoagulant drug with a 10-12 hour half-life that can be taken 4 times per day. It works as an antiplatelet by inhibiting phosphodiesterase and increasing cyclic AMP in platelets, reducing the likelihood of blood clot formation. It is commonly used in combination with warfarin after artificial heart valve replacement surgery to further reduce the risk of blood clots. However, for older adults aged 65 and over, short-acting dipyridamole carries risks of postural hypotension and falls, and may not be as effective as alternative antiplatelet treatments.
