Sharks and teleost fish differ in several key anatomical features. Sharks have cartilaginous skeletons, 5-7 gill slits not covered by an operculum, heterocercal caudal fins, and extract urea as their main nitrogenous waste product. In contrast, teleosts have bony skeletons, 7-8 gills covered by an operculum, homocercal caudal fins, and extract ammonia. Reproduction also differs between the two classes, with sharks exhibiting various forms of internal fertilization and viviparity/oviparity while most teleosts practice external fertilization through egg-laying.
