• Where you can find deserts: Central Australia, United States, the Southern

• Sharp spines protect the cactus from hungry animals. A waxy coating on the
thick tough skin prevents precious water from evaporating. The largest
cactus the Saguaro cactus can stand more than fifty feet tall.
• Deserts can be created by people and animals by planting crops and letting
them die. When the soil blows away it forms a desert.
• The temperatures of the hot and dry deserts can reach up to 120 degrees F.
In coastal deserts the temperatures go from 55 degrees F to 75 degrees F.
